NIONS warned yesterday that the ongoing builders strike, which is entering its ninth day, could escalate into an all-out general strike if the employers’ side did not show signs it was ready to deal. While they voiced their readiness to talk, unions also warned that things could get worse if the matter was not resolved soon. “We are warning of the danger of labour peace exploding because of the builders’ strike,” said right-wing union SEK’s boss Nicos Moiseos. Moiseos said yesterday h his union had decided h how to react but it would n not announce anytthing, in order to give tthe labour minister time tto bring the two sides b back to the negotiating ttable. Earlier in the day, Pamb bis Kyritsis, the leader o of left-wing PEO union, s said it was certain there w would be an escalation iif the other side did not s show any signs that it w was ready to reconcile. “Other sectors will jjoin the mobilisation, in s support of the builders’ s strike, which could take tthe form of a general strike,” Kyritsis said. The labour minister is trying to mediate between the workers and employers in a bid to put an end to the construction strike on its eighth day yesterday.

Following a meeting with Minister Sotiroulla Charalambous yesterday afternoon, the two sides voiced their readiness to return to the negotiating table to find a solution. “We have been exploring the possibility of bringing the two sides within range of an agreement,” Charalambous said. “When we are ready and have something more concrete we will announce it. Exploratory contacts are underway and our aim is to resolve this problem as soon as possible.” Builders went on strike eight days ago over job losses and insecurity in the sector. Their unions have taken issue with the roughly 10,000 workers in their sector who hail from the EU, and are not part of collective agreements that guarantee better benefits for employees. The chamber of commerce and industry (KEVE) and employers’ organisation OEV also said they were ready to talk. “We all agree that this matter must come to a close as soon as possible because the country cannot take any economic turmoil,” KEVE secretary Marios Tsiakis said. The climate was further worsened by circulars issued by KEVE and OEV during the week suggesting a pay freeze in the private sector.

Missing pet reward worth a new mortgage A DOG owner has remortgaged her home so she can offer a £10,000 reward for the safe return of her missing pet. Dawn Maw, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, said her four-year-old prize-winning German shorthaired pointer Angel was stolen last month. The 42-year-old Maw said that Angel was bundled off into a white Transit-type van after she had been walking her dogs in a park. Speaking on ITV’s Daybreak yesterday, Maw said she had “no idea” why anyone would take Angel, who is spayed and so cannot be

used for breeding. “She’s a big member of the family,” the dog owner added. “We spent a lot of time together. My whole social life revolved around doing things with Angel, whether it was showing, she was a working dog... We just need her back. The house is empty. The thought of someone watching you and taking a member of your family is quite scary.” Maw, who is married with one child, and who works for the Department for Work and Pensions, said she has spent a further £3,000 on advertising for her pet’s safe return.
