NIONS warned yesterday that the ongoing builders strike, which is entering its ninth day, could escalate into an all-out general strike if the employers’ side did not show signs it was ready to deal. While they voiced their readiness to talk, unions also warned that things could get worse if the matter was not resolved soon. “We are warning of the danger of labour peace exploding because of the builders’ strike,” said right-wing union SEK’s boss Nicos Moiseos. Moiseos said yesterday h his union had decided h how to react but it would n not announce anytthing, in order to give tthe labour minister time tto bring the two sides b back to the negotiating ttable. Earlier in the day, Pamb bis Kyritsis, the leader o of left-wing PEO union, s said it was certain there w would be an escalation iif the other side did not s show any signs that it w was ready to reconcile. “Other sectors will jjoin the mobilisation, in s support of the builders’ s strike, which could take tthe form of a general strike,” Kyritsis said. The labour minister is trying to mediate between the workers and employers in a bid to put an end to the construction strike on its eighth day yesterday.
Following a meeting with Minister Sotiroulla Charalambous yesterday afternoon, the two sides voiced their readiness to return to the negotiating table to find a solution. “We have been exploring the possibility of bringing the two sides within range of an agreement,” Charalambous said. “When we are ready and have something more concrete we will announce it. Exploratory contacts are underway and our aim is to resolve this problem as soon as possible.” Builders went on strike eight days ago over job losses and insecurity in the sector. Their unions have taken issue with the roughly 10,000 workers in their sector who hail from the EU, and are not part of collective agreements that guarantee better benefits for employees. The chamber of commerce and industry (KEVE) and employers’ organisation OEV also said they were ready to talk. “We all agree that this matter must come to a close as soon as possible because the country cannot take any economic turmoil,” KEVE secretary Marios Tsiakis said. The climate was further worsened by circulars issued by KEVE and OEV during the week suggesting a pay freeze in the private sector.

Missing pet reward worth a new mortgage A DOG owner has remortgaged her home so she can offer a £10,000 reward for the safe return of her missing pet. Dawn Maw, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, said her four-year-old prize-winning German shorthaired pointer Angel was stolen last month. The 42-year-old Maw said that Angel was bundled off into a white Transit-type van after she had been walking her dogs in a park. Speaking on ITV’s Daybreak yesterday, Maw said she had “no idea” why anyone would take Angel, who is spayed and so cannot be
used for breeding. “She’s a big member of the family,” the dog owner added. “We spent a lot of time together. My whole social life revolved around doing things with Angel, whether it was showing, she was a working dog... We just need her back. The house is empty. The thought of someone watching you and taking a member of your family is quite scary.” Maw, who is married with one child, and who works for the Department for Work and Pensions, said she has spent a further £3,000 on advertising for her pet’s safe return.

Sweeping check on buses By Peter Stevenson ISLANDWIDE checks will be carried out on all buses that should have been replaced at the turn of the year after 30 of 31 buses used to transport school children in Nicosia failed their MOT, according to Communications and Works Minister Efthymios Flourentzos. “Nicosia cannot be the only place chosen for the checks and I have ordered the road transport department to check all buses that should have been replaced at the start of the year,” he added. He gave assurances that school children would be transported with safety until
Thirty of 31 buses used to transport school children in Nicosia failed most recent MOT the end of the year. “The old buses should have been replaced with new ones to meet the transport requirements of the children until the end of the school year,” he added. Flourentzos said that the state would now have to pay for the 30 buses to be repaired and that all those vehicles which are beyond repair would be decommissioned. The minister revealed that it was the bus operating companies of each district that were contractually obligated to replace the old
buses in the new year. According to Flourentzos due to high borrowing costs and funding difficulties, the audit committee for requirements and changes was asked to extend the deadline on the buses’ usability so the companies could meet their requirements. “An extension was given under the condition that regardless of the age, any buses which are used must be safe,” Flourentzos said. “The ministry considers safety to be of utmost importance,” he added.
“School children will be transported with backup buses or the routes will be adjusted accordingly,” he said. “There are mistakes in the contract between the state and the bus companies, allowing them to take advantage of certain aspects such as these old buses,” he said. “These will be corrected with the new school year and instructions have been given not to invite tenders from companies, but for the contracting authority to ensure the legal-
ity of the procedures and to ensure that the procedures followed are not exploited,” he concluded. Speaking to the state broadcaster, a spokesman for Nicosia bus company OSEL, said that buses did not operate if they did not have the correct paperwork. “The buses are checked at the start of each year and if they pass their MOT then they can operate for one year,” he said. Buses which did not pass their MOT this January, had been transporting children in November and December of 2012. “But these buses are old and if they had been checked on a monthly basis it’s possible that they may not have passed every month,” he concluded.
What’s that in your back yard? Is it really a fighter plane? SATELLITE views of the earth used to be reserved for high ranked military and political personnel but now with the help of Google the average citizen can pinpoint where he lives and works or can help him look into his neighbour’s premises. If you live in the area of Strakka between Lakatamia and Kato Deftera you might be forgiven for thinking that someone at Google was playing a practical joke, as one residence clearly has a jet parked in the backyard. The decommissioned plane is the property of pilot Yiotis Ioannides, husband of Maria Yiorkadji, sister of Nicosia Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis. It is believed the British Sea Harrier Jet model ZH808,
This Google map clearly shows the aircraft parked in a field adjacent to the Strakka estate which was built in 1997 was sold in 2005 after it suffered damage due to a hard landing during an exercise at Akrotiri base where it was on a visit. It was sold to a scrap metal dealer in Kalo Chorio for 600 Cyprus pounds (€1,000) before being purchased by enthusiast Ioannou for 3,000 Cyprus pounds. He declined to comment for this article. Harrier’s are famous for their vertical takeoffs and landings with the former often causing irreparable damage to the landing
suspension. Sea Harriers served in the Falklands War, both of the Gulf Wars, and the Balkans conflicts. On all occasions They mainly operated from aircraft carriers positioned within the conflict zone. They were withdrawn from service in 2006 and the last remaining aircraft from 801 Naval Air Squadron were decommissioned on March 29, 2006. The plans for the Harriers retirement were announced in 2002 by the British ministry of defence.

Home CYPRUS TODAY State gives in on road tax extension AFTER saying they probably would not, the transport ministry has in the end extended the deadline for the payment of road tax until February 25, Minister Efthymios Flourentzos announced yesterday. “Considering the fact that a large number of privately owned vehicles have not yet renewed their road tax certificates we thought it necessary to extend the deadline,” he said. According to Flourentzos the ministry had been inundated with requests to extend the deadline by members of the public and private businesses so they could meet this ‘financial necessity’ as he put it. “We realise that we are currently going through an economic crisis which has not allowed vehicle owners to meet the February 4 deadline and so we concluded that an extension was required,” he said. No extensions to the deadline were expected earlier in the week, Road Transport Department chief Sotiris Kolletas said on Tuesday he was opposed to an extension. Kolletas revealed that only 383,000 of the currently 695,000 vehicles in circulation have had their road tax renewed.
Serious case of doping probed CYPRUS’ Footballers’ Association (PASP) is looking into a serious case of doping after a foreign football player tested positive for the substance methylhexaneamine in a match last December, according to a statement released by PASP. The player immediately contacted PASP to inform them that he had never knowingly taken the banned substance. PASP are looking into it to clear up any confusion via their legal adviser, Loizos Hadjidemetriou. “What we can say right now is that we are not sure that the foreign player will be punished with the strictest sentence,” a statement said. According to PASP the fact that the player was not willing to accept a three-month ban indicated his innocence. “He is sure of his innocence and prefers to go through a legal battle to prove it,” the statement added. Methylhexaneamine was first placed on the World AntiDoping Association’s Prohibited List in 2010 classed as a non-specified stimulant. However from 2011 it has been re-classified as a Specified Stimulant and is prohibited incompetition only. It is increasingly being found in nutritional supplements.
‘Biggest investment in history of Cyprus’ The island could have one of the major natural gas liquefaction terminals in the world, says Sylikiotis By George Psyllides CYPRUS could have one of the major natural gas liquefaction terminals in the world, the biggest investment in the history of the Republic, Commerce Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis said yesterday. “Our decision to carry out this project is irreversible because the political and economic benefits would be unmatched,” the minister said. Construction of the plant at Vassilikos is expected to begin late in 2014 or early 2015, the minister said. The aim is to have it ready by 2019. “Our objective is for the gas liquefaction terminal to process our own gas, which we will transfer to international markets, as well as the natural gas of Israel, Lebanon, and other countries in the region”. As regards oil, he said the government is going ahead with the construction of a state oil terminal
and is engaged in negotiations with a Dutch company. A private terminal is also under construction. “These two will turn Cyprus into a major trade hub for oil”, he said. Cyprus has identified vast reserves of natural gas off its coastline, with estimates of up to 60 trillion cubic feet, with just one block in the Mediterranean basin between Cyprus and Israel estimated to contain gas worth $80 billion. The gas fields are only likely to come on line in 2018 for domestic consumption and 2019-2020 for export. The government has recently signed contracts with the consortium EMI/ Kogas for blocks 2, 3 and 9 in its EEZ, receiving €150 million, while in the coming days it is expected that contracts will be signed with TOTAL for blocks 10 and 11. “The big benefits for our country are yet to come,” Sylikiotis said, adding that the profit for the state from the ex-
ploitation of its hydrocarbon reserves would exceed 70 per cent, which would be “among the highest in the world”. Referring to renewable energy sources, Sylikiotis said their contribution in energy consumption reached 8.6 per cent in 2012, exceeding the national target of 4.92 per cent. And the ministry this week announced it had selected the firms that will construct 23 photovoltaic parks that will produce 80GWh at a lower cost. The current average cost of production of electric power with conventional fuel is 15.40 cents per KWh while the average price secured through the bidding process was 8.66 cents per KWh, Sylikiotis said. The process attracted 121 applicants who submitted 2,150 bids. Of the 23 projects, 15 will produce up to 1.5 MW, five will have an output of up to 3.0 MW, two, up to 5 MW, and one will have a capacity of up to 10 MW.

Home December jobless rate jumps to 14.7 pct, one of highest in the EU THE JOBLESS rate in Cyprus jumped to 14.7 per cent in December, one of the highest increases in the European Union. Highlighting the human cost of a debt crisis that began in 2009 in Greece and spread to the eurozone’s biggest economies, some 18.7 million people were out of work in December, an unemployment rate of 11.7 per cent, according to the statistics That figure has risen from below 8.0 per cent in early 2008, just before the full effects of the global financial crisis were fully
felt, and is well above 11.3 per cent forecast by the European Commission for end-2012. Unemployment held steady at just 5.3 per cent in Germany, the eurozone’s biggest economy, but rose again in Portugal and Cyprus, to 16.5 per cent and 14.7 per cent respectively.
41,625 JOBLESS In January, the island’s statistical service said 41,625 people were unemployed the previous month. Greece holds the record in both the euro-
zone and the wider European Union for joblessness, with a rate of 26.8 per cent in October, the latest figure available. The unemployment rate in Spain fell slightly to 26.1 per cent in December. Even though the economy appears to have hit bottom, the number of those out of work is expected to rise in coming months, employment expectations in the latest Commission survey suggest. “We would still expect the jobless rate to breach 12 per cent later this year,” said Martin van Vliet an

Labour minister calls meeting for next week (continued from front page) This was also discussed during yesterday’s meeting with the minister who plans to call a meeting next week in a bid to iron out differences. “Respect of labour relations is necessary if we want to behave properly and responsibly during the difficult conditions the country and the economy are going through,” Charalambous said. OEV director Michalis Pilikos reiterated that the circular did not mean that a decision had been made to cut wages. It said that “in cases where there is a problem the unions and the workers will be called to discuss what happens next,” Pilikos said. KEVE’s Tsiakis said his organisation had recommended businesses give pay rises if
they could, adding that the unions’ reaction to the circular was unwarranted. In a related development, KEVE and OEV rejected a labour ministry proposal that gave the minister the power – under certain circumstances – to extend collective agreements in one part of a sector to all businesses in that sector. “The ministry arrived at this suggestion after much deliberation and looking into what is happening in labour relations and the labour market in Cyprus, and what is happening in EU countries.” Charalambous said the proposal aimed at tackling cases where collective agreements and their conditions were not followed by all businesses in one sector, resulting in unfair competition between workers and enterprises.

It expects to employ more than 120 people this year but it also expects that the binary options industry will create some 1,200 new jobs on the island in the future. Some 40 other companies are currently trying to get into Cyprus. “Cyprus’ geographic
location, excellent infrastructure and highcalibre labour pool, made the island our first and only choice for our European and Middle Eastern headquarters,” Laurent said. Binary options, also known as fixed return options, differ from traditional investments in that investors are only required to correctly predict the direction of an asset movement in order to complete a successful trade. With binary options there are generally only two possible outcomes – up or down. Binary options are a relatively new financial instrument, but the company said it expected demand to keep growing exponentially. “As old-time traders lose faith in traditional investment vehicles, and as those who have
never traded seek to make money out of their new-found 24-7 access to financial markets, people will increasingly turn to binary options,” said investor relations director Sophie May. After four years in business, Bank De Binary has 250,000 client accounts, which it expects will double in the next 12 months. “A lot of money is in no man’s land right now and we are providing a place for it,” Laurent said. “With binary options we have sought to strip things down, to provide adequate safety measures and to offer a fighting chance to all traders, regardless of their initial capital or degree of market experience.” For more information: www.bbinary.com

A GERMAN government official acknowledged yesterday that a collapse of Cyprus’ banking sector would pose a threat to the eurozone’s stability, suggesting that the country would not block a bailout package. “From everything that I know, I would expect that one will come to the conclusion that it’s relevant,” Norbert Barthle, a lawmaker and budget spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union-led bloc, was quoted as saying by Bloomberg. “One has to take a very close look at the issue of contagion, especially since the Cypriot banks are very closely tied to the Greek banks.” He is the first senior German government official to acknowledge the systemic risk to the 17-nation euro region posed by Cyprus. Germany’s finance minister has said rescue-fund rules stipulate that a country must pose a risk to the stability of the entire region before it can be eligible for bailout loans. Der Spiegel reported this week that European Central
Bank President Mario Draghi had pressed German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble into recognising that the country posed a risk. Barthle said the issue of Cyprus’ threat to the euro would be resolved when legislators saw that the country was systemically relevant to the currency. Open questions remain on Cyprus’ debt sustainability, Russia’s involvement, harmonising its tax system, privatising state assets and accusations of money laundering, he said according to Bloomberg. Cyprus has fiercely rejected the money laundering allegations, embarking on a campaign to convince Europeans. “Cyprus has to make substantial progress in countering these accusations,” Barthle said. “This will have to be assessed very closely, otherwise I can’t imagine that there will be an approval of any package.” Russia has signalled it is prepared to contribute in rescuing Cyprus, which according to Barthle, would offer EU officials “a bit of time” to agree on a package. Though that timetable will not stretch until German parliamentary elections in September, Barthle said.
Banks follow sovereign downgrade FOLLOWING the downgrade of Cyprus’ sovereign rating on January 25, Fitch Ratings late on Thursday downgraded Bank of Cyprus’ (BOC), Cyprus Popular Bank’s (CPB) and Hellenic Bank’s (HB) Long-term Issuer Default Ratings (IDRS) and Support Rating Floors (SRFS) to ‘B’ from ‘BB-. The Outlooks on the banks’ Long-term IDRs were negative in line with that of the sovereign, Fitch said. The agency affirmed all three banks’ Short-term IDRs at ‘B’. Fitch said the sovereign downgrade indicated a weakening of its ability to provide extraordinary support to its banks. Fitch said it expected recapitalisation to be up to €10bn, with a “degree of headroom”. The Negative Outlooks indicate that any further downgrade of Cyprus’s sovereign rating would be likely to lead to a further downgrade of the banks’ long-term IDRs, senior debt ratings and SRFs.

A triumph of bicommunal collaboration
CYPRUS TODAY Leaving BoC THE BANK of Cyprus announced yesterday that 229 people left its employ in January. “The Bank of Cyprus Group would like to announce that in light of the group’s reorganisation and reduction of operating costs, 229 people left the group at the end January 2013,” the statement said. With these departures, the personnel currently employed by the group in Cyprus has been reduced by 6.4 per cent, saving around 8.5 per cent of the wage bill.
Only through cooperation will we save our cultural heritage, says Hadjidemetriou By Stefanos Evripidou REACHING AGREEMENT on restoration work for the decaying monastery of Apostolos Andreas in the Karpas peninsular was a triumph of bicommunal collaboration and positive thinking, said Takis Hadjidemetriou, a member of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage yesterday. “This is a watershed moment. Only through the cooperation of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots will we save our cultural heritage,” he told the Cyprus Mail. Hadjidemetriou said the technical committee has been working on finding a solution to the Apostolos Andreas conundrum since last February. “I tried hard not to reach deadlock, and not to see any developments from a negative perspective,” said Hadjidemetriou, who heads the committee, made up of five Greek Cypriots and five Turkish Cypriots. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed protocol agreements with the Church of Cyprus and Turkish Cypriot EVKAF Administration separately on Thursday for the full restoration of the dilapidated monastery after years of disagreement over who will do the work, how, for whose benefit and with whose money. The need to prop up the historic religious site, considered of huge importance for Greek Cypriots of the Orthodox faith, first came to the foreground in 2002. Initial plans to renovate it were rejected by the Church until 2006 when the Archbishopric gave its approval to a new renovation plan undertaken by the University of Patra in Greece. However, after almost seven
years, there was still no agreement between the Church, Turkish Cypriot authorities and the UN to go ahead with much-needed support work. Just last month, Archbishop Chrysostomos II said he was prepared to let the monastery collapse rather than sign a plan that did not specify clearly that the Church of Cyprus owned the site. The primate also had a dig at the bicommunal technical committee, saying it had done nothing to help. The last twist in the saga was when the Turkish Cypriot authorities, having seemingly lost patience with the Church’s refusal to permit the start of restoration work, decided to go ahead unilaterally, starting work on cleaning up the monastery’s exterior. “I said to the Turkish Cypriots, this will create chaos, let’s do it together. And so we came up with the idea of a common fund where everyone contributes to a common effort. The Turkish Cypriots accepted. I spoke to the priests and told them ‘if you don’t do it, the Turkish Cypriots will’ and they agreed,” said Hadjidemetriou. On Thursday, the UN announced to a chorus of praise that the project was finally good to go. The golden compromise was to create a “multi-donor partnership” allowing everyone to provide funding for the project. The monastery will be restored according to the Patra University study in three phases with the first phase costing €2.5 million. The total cost is estimated at €6m. US Ambassador to Nicosia John Koenig also played his part, recently visiting the Archbishop to discuss ways to save the historic monastery. In a statement released yes-
terday, Koenig said the US plans to contribute to the multi-donor fund, in the hope this will encourage swift implementation of the restoration plan. “There could be no better example of how cooperation can result in progress on issues of common concern,” he said. According to Hadjidemetriou, once a call for tenders is issued, the work will be complete within 26 months. As for the technical committee, set up in 2008, Hadjidemetriou had this to say: “We’ve been working hard the last five years.” “You need a central goal and you need to work towards it. We wanted to take cultural heritage out of the realm of politics and conflict for the greater good. And we have succeeded, at least in the committee, in creating a climate of trust and cooperation,” he said. When vandals recently knocked down a mosque wall under restoration in Denia, the Turkish Cypriot committee members comforted their Greek Cypriot colleagues who were appalled by the act of desecration. “This did not create a crisis in the committee. On the contrary, our Turkish Cypriot colleagues tried to comfort us because we felt terrible about it,” said Hadjidemetriou. So far, the committee has undertaken minor works on 15 monuments across the island, has six restoration projects now underway on churches and mosques north and south of the divide, and is preparing to issue a call for tenders for studies on restoration work for six more monuments. Each study is prepared by a Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot architect or engineer.
Car arson A CAR was damaged after an arson attack in the early hours of yesterday in Ayia Fyla in Limassol. According to police, at around 2.20am, the Fire Service was informed that a car parked outside a company shop was on fire. Firefighters put out the blaze but not before the front part of the car and interior sustained extensive damage. An examination of the scene confirmed the fire was an act of arson.

Pussy Riot band member moved to hospital
Berlusconi popularity surging amid bank scandal
ONE of the jailed members of Russian punk protest collective Pussy Riot has been moved to a prison with a hospital after suffering headaches and fatigue, her bandmate said in remarks broadcast yesterday. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 23, was one of three women sentenced to two years in prison for a “punk prayer” in Russia’s main cathedral last February in which they called on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Vladimir Putin. Tolokonnikova was sent to Corrective Colony No. 14 in the Mordovia region after losing her appeal in October. “She has been complaining about her health for a long time, and a decision was taken to move her to a neighbouring (prison) colony where there is a hospital,” her bandmate Yekaterina Samutsevich told internet and cable channel Dozhd. She said Tolokonnikova had suffered headaches for months and was exhausted from labour at the prison. She said she had been moved to the other prison several days ago. “The problem is, they don’t let her rest after the shift,” said Samutsevich. “After the shift, they give them more tasks, and she is just working round the clock. She complains of fatigue, huge fatigue.” Tolokonnikova, Samutsevich and Maria Alyokhina were convicted of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” for their protest in Moscow’s Christ the Saviour cathedral, which the dominant Russian Orthodox Church cast as part of a coordinated attack.
A GROWING scandal at Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the world’s oldest bank, has helped Silvio Berlusconi close the gap with the centre-left frontrunners to five per cent, its tightest so far, weeks before Italy’s election, a poll showed yesterday. An SWG survey showed former premier Berlusconi’s centre-right coalition had gained 1.3 per cent in a week and was now on 27.8 per cent, compared to 32.8 per cent for Pier Luigi Bersani’s centre left, which had lost 1.6 per cent. Berlusconi, a 76-year-old billionaire media magnate, has made an astonishing comeback over the last month through a blitz of radio and television appearances, but SWG said the Monte dei Paschi scandal had also had a significant impact. Bersani’s Democratic Party (PD) has ties going back decades with the 540-year-old Tuscan bank through local government and dominance of a charitable foundation which is the lender’s biggest shareholder. SWG said the scandal had both galvanised previously disillusioned centre-right voters and demoralised centreleft supporters ahead of the February 24-25 vote. Some 50 per cent of those polled said the PD had responsibility for the trouble at Italy’s third largest bank. Bersani says the national party was not to blame for a scandal over murky derivatives contracts and cash problems that have forced Monte Paschi to take a state bailout. Outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti’s centrist grouping has also gained over the last week by 1.4 points, but he is stuck at 14.2 per cent, far behind his 20 per cent target and well beaten into third place by the surging anti-establishment 5-Star Movement.

Armenia stability at risk after murder bid By Hasmik Mkrtchyan AN assassination attempt on a presidential candidate in Armenia has thrown this month’s election into doubt and could threaten stability in the volatile Caucasus region that carries oil and natural gas to Europe. Paruyr Hayrikyan, an outsider in the February 18 presidential vote, was shot in the shoulder close to his home in the capital Yerevan on Thursday night. Doctors removed the bullet yesterday and said his life was not in danger. The motive was not immediately clear but the election, in which President Serzh
Shooting could delay Feb. 18 polls in Caucasus nation Sarksyan is widely expected to secure a second five-year term, could be postponed for two weeks under the constitution if he is forced to pull out. “It’s a blow to the leadership of the country and our statehood,” Prime Minister Tigran Sarksyan told reporters. Stability is vital for the former Soviet republic of 3.2 million to woo investors and boost an economy devastated by a war with neighbouring Azerbaijan in the 1990s
and then the 2008-09 global financial crisis. The attack will raise fears of a return to the violence that marred the 2008 presidential election in the landlocked country, Russia’s main ally in the turbulent south Caucasus. Violent clashes broke out between opposition protesters and police in 2008, killing about 10 people and further damaging Armenia’s hopes of recovery. “I don’t think that this shot was against Mr Hayrikyan,”
said independent political analyst Alexander Iskanderyan, describing him as a symbol of independence. “This shot was aimed against the political development of the country and was meant destabilise situation and mar the election.” Any sign of instability in the Caucasus is a concern to investors because although Armenia has no pipelines of its own, pipelines carry oil and gas to Europe via Turkey through Azerbaijan, whose relationship with Armenia remains fractious. Russia has a military base in Armenia, which is a member of a Moscow-dominated security alliance of ex-Soviet states.

Britain BRITAIN TODAY Falklands talks criterion BRITAIN told Argentina yesterday it was unwilling to discuss the disputed status of the Falkland Islands unless talks included the local proBritish authorities there too, deepening a diplomatic spat over the South Atlantic archipelago. Britain set out its position after visiting Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman rejected a London meeting with his British counterpart William Hague on Thursday because he objected to the presence of Falkland islanders. “We’re disappointed by the decision,” a spokeswoman for British Prime Minister David Cameron said, referring to Timerman’s refusal to meet Hague and the Falklanders. “The position is that we’re not prepared to talk over the heads of the Falkland islanders about matters that directly affect their status as a British overseas territory or indeed their economy or any other issues.”
No charges over Kate prank call BRITISH prosecutors said yesterday two Australian radio hosts who made a prank call to the hospital treating Prince William’s pregnant wife Kate would face no criminal charges over the death of the nurse who answered the phone and later killed herself. Indian-born Jacintha Saldanha, 46, was found hanged last December in her hospital lodgings in London, days after she answered the hoax call from DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian at Australian radio station 2Day FM. As part of the ruse, the pair had pretended to be Queen Elizabeth and William’s father, heir to the throne Prince Charles.
Seabirds mystery INCREASING numbers of stricken birds are washing up on the south west coast after being covered in a mysterious substance. Wildlife experts are no closer to discovering the cause of the environmental damage, which has seen more than 100 seabirds taken into care at the RSPCA West Hatch wildlife centre in Taunton, Somerset, since Thursday. Most of the birds, guillemots, were found at Chesil Beach, near Portland in Dorset.
Detective jailed over Murdoch tabloid leak offer Detective had called News of the World with offer to undermine hacking probe By Michael Holden A SENIOR British counterterrorism police officer was jailed yesterday after becoming the first person to be convicted following a massive police investigation into alleged phone-hacking centred on Rupert Murdoch’s British newspapers. Detective Chief Inspector April Casburn, 53, was jailed for 15 months for misconduct in a public office after she was found guilty last month of offering to sell details about the phone-hacking inquiry to Murdoch’s News of the World tabloid. “It was ... a corrupt attempt to make money out of sensitive and potentially very damaging information,” said Justice Adrian Fulford. Casburn called the News
of the World on September 11, 2010, when police were at the early stages of examining claims journalists from the paper had illegally accessed the voicemails of mobile phones in a bid to find stories. Prosecutors said she had phoned asking for money in an attempt to undermine the investigation because of her perception that she had been wronged and sidelined by police colleagues. She denied asking for payment, and said her intention was to raise the alarm over what she viewed as a waste of counter-terrorism resources on hacking, when they should have been concentrating on preventing attacks in the runup to the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. Casburn, head of a counterterrorism financial investiga-
tions unit at the time, testified that she had been incensed by the attitude of senior officers, who regarded the hacking probe as “a bit of a jolly” and a chance to interview celebrity hacking victims like the actress Sienna Miller. However the judge said her actions could not be described as that of a whistleblower, adding if she was not in the process of adopting a child, he would have jailed her for three years. “If the News of the World had accepted her offer, it’s clear, in my view, that Ms Casburn would have taken the money and, as a result, she posed a significant threat to the integrity of this important police investigation,” Fulford said. Detectives are now not only investigating these allegations, but also whether journalists paid cash to public
Detective Chief Inspector Casburn (R) denied asking for payment and said her intention was to raise the alarm over what she viewed as a waste of resources officials, including police officers, for information. Casburn is the first person to be convicted in a scandal which escalated into a crisis embroiling the top echelons of the UK establishment, media, and police, and led to Murdoch closing down the News of the World in July 2011.
Rebekah Brooks, the former boss of News Corp’s British newspaper business and a close confidante of Murdoch and Prime Minister David Cameron’s former media chief Andy Coulson, are among those who have also been charged with criminal offences relating to their inquiries.
Bungling hitmen guilty of schoolboy’s murder TWO bungling hitmen who stabbed an innocent schoolboy to death by mistake were found guilty of his murder yesterday. Ben Hope, 39, and Jason Richards, 38, both from Cardiff, were each paid £1,000 in “blood money” to murder a middle-aged family man who owed money to a shady businessman. The “hit” went tragically wrong when the balaclavaclad killers, who were high on drugs, went to the wrong address in Roath, Cardiff, in April 2010, and murdered teenager Aamir Siddiqi by mistake. Aamir, 17, was hacked down on the doorstep of his home. His frantic parents Iqbal and Parveen Siddiqi fought to save their son but were knifed in turn by the killers, who let out chilling howls. Hope and Richards both denied murdering Aamir and two separate counts of the attempted murder of his parents. They were convicted unanimously of all charges a day after the jury retired at Swansea Crown Court. The family of murdered Aamir let out a small whoop of joy as the guilty verdicts were read out in court yesterday. Trial judge Mr Justice Royce then adjourned sentencing until next Friday so that he can listen at length to both sides before setting a minimum jail term. He told Hope and Richards: “It is inevitable that there is a life sentence and it

Victim of botched murder: schoolboy Aamir Siddiqi is inevitable that there will be a very substantial minimum term.” He then turned to the jury of seven men and five women and thanked them for their efforts during the trial. “This has been a very substantial demand on your time. You have discharged your duty with great care.” He added that he was exempting them from jury service for the next 25 years. Speaking on the courthouse steps on behalf of the family, Aamir’s sister, Umbareen Siddiqi, 33, paid tribute to her murdered brother. “Today’s guilty verdict is the right one and as a family we are both delighted and relieved,” she said. “The world has moved on in almost three years since the murder but for us the attack is as fresh as if it happened yesterday.”

World Massive New Year fireworks blast kills at least nine
Deadly explosion at Mexico oil giant HQ
AT least nine people died when ďŹ reworks for Chinese New Year celebrations exploded on a lorry in central China, destroying part of an elevated motorway and sending vehicles plummeting 100ft to the ground. Twenty-ďŹ ve vehicles were buried in the collapse, said the ofďŹ cial Xinhua News Agency. It said nine people were conďŹ rmed dead and another 13 injured, including four in a serious condition. Earlier reports by China National Radio and some other outlets of 26 people killed were later removed from websites. An 80-metre (260-ft) stretch of the major east-west highway collapsed in Mianchi county in Henan province. There was no immediate word on the cause of the explosion. It occurred west of Luoyang, an ancient capital of China known for grottoes of Buddhist statues carved from limestone cliffs. Fireworks are an enormously popular part of Chinese Lunar New Year festivities, and are sometimes made, shipped and stored in unsafe conditions.
32 people dead, blast cause as yet unknown By Gabriel Stargardter RESCUE workers yesterday pulled out bodies from the debris at the headquarters of Mexican state oil giant Pemex, where an explosion that killed at least 32 people has thrown a spotlight back on the state-run company’s poor safety record. Scenes of confusion and chaos outside the downtown tower block in Mexico City have dealt another blow to Pemex’s image just as Mexico’s new president is seeking to court outside investment for the 75-year-old monopoly. next to the 50-story skyscraper, and chief executive ofďŹ cer Emilio Lozoya said the number of conďŹ rmed dead now stood at 32, up
from 25 overnight. A further 121 were injured, he added. It was not clear what caused the mid-afternoon explosion, Lozoya said. “A fatal incident like yesterday’s cannot be explained in two hours, we are working with the best teams in Mexico and from overseas, we will not speculate,â€? he told a news conference. Pemex, both a symbol of Mexican self-sufďŹ ciency and a byword for security glitches, oil theft and frequent accidents, has been hamstrung by inefďŹ ciency, union corruption and a series of safety failures costing hundreds of lives. Investigators and rescue teams picked through shattered glass and concrete to look for survivors and discover what caused one of the worst explosions to hit Pemex in recent years. OfďŹ cials have been unable to say how many people may still be trapped within the wreckage of the ofďŹ ce block. A military paramedic at the scene said there were likely many, and that he expected
the death toll to continue increasing. A government ofďŹ cial, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a preliminary line of inquiry suggested a gas boiler had blown up in the building to the side of the main tower that houses administrative ofďŹ ces. However, he stressed nothing had been determined for sure. Investigators have cordoned off the blast site, and a local Red Cross ofďŹ cial, Isaac Oxenhaut, said the ceiling had collapsed in three lower stories of the building. Lozoya said the four oors worst affected by the explosion normally had about 200 to 250 people working on them. That compared with about 10,000 staff in the entire Pemex complex. The blast followed a September ďŹ re at a Pemex gas facility near the northern city of Reynosa which killed 30 people. More than 300 were killed when a Pemex natural gas plant on the outskirts of Mexico City blew up in 1984.

F O R M E R Mayor Edward Koch, who presided over New York City during the turbulent late 1970s and ’80s and came to personify the city with his wry and outspoken style, died yesterday at the age of 88, his spokesman said. As mayor from 1978 to 1989, the forceful, quickwitted Koch (inset), with his trademark phrase “How’m I doing?,â€? was a polarising ďŹ gure and the city’s constant promoter. Koch died of congestive heart failure at about 2am (0700 GMT) at New York-Presbyterian hospital following a year of repeated hospitalisations,
George Arzt, his spokesman, said. Koch was credited with lifting New York from crushing economic crises to a level of prosperity that was the envy of other US cities. Under his leadership, the city regained its ďŹ nancial footing and underwent a building renaissance. But his three terms in ofďŹ ce were also marked by racial tensions, corruption among many of his political allies, the rise in AIDS and HIV, homelessness and a high crime rate. In 1989, he lost the Democratic nomination for what would have been a record fourth term as mayor.
WORLD TODAY Fatal Pakistan bombing A SUICIDE bomber killed 22 people yesterday in a crowded market outside two mosques from separate Muslim sects in Pakistan’s restive northwest, police and hospital ofďŹ cials said. Two of the dead were policemen. Forty-eight people were wounded in the attack in a narrow lane in the town of Hangu that houses both a Shi’ite and a Sunni Muslim mosque. OfďŹ cials said the antiTaliban Sunni Supreme Council often holds its meetings in the Sunni mosque, which made it a possible target. But district police chief Muhammad Saeed said that the attack was aimed at Shi’ites and that Sunni Muslims were unintended victims. “Most of the dead were moving in and out of the mosques in the marketplace after Friday prayers when the bomb went off,â€? senior police ofďŹ cer Imtiaz Shah said. Hangu, part of Pakistan’s border region with Afghanistan, has been racked by sectarian violence between Sunni and Shi’ite tribes whose mosques, homes and shops are often close to one another.

An attack on US Ankara embassy leaves guard dead Suicide bomber a member of far-left group By Jonathon Burch A SUICIDE bomber from a far-left group killed a Turkish security guard at the US embassy in Ankara yesterday, blowing the door off a side entrance and sending smoke and debris flying into the street. The attacker blew himself up inside US property, Ankara governor Alaaddin Yuksel said. The blast sent masonry spewing out of the wall and could be heard a mile away. Interior Minister Muammer Guler said the bomber was a member of a far-left group. The US State Department said it was working with Turkish police to probe what it described as “a terrorist blast”. Islamist radicals, far-left groups, far-right groups and Kurdish separatist militants have all carried out attacks in Turkey in the past. There was no claim of responsibility. “The suicide bomber was ripped apart and one or two citizens from the special security team passed away,” said Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who was attending a ceremony in Istanbul when the blast happened.
“This event shows that we need to fight together everywhere in the world against these terrorist elements,” he said. Far-left groups in Turkey oppose what they see as US influence over Turkish foreign policy. Turkey is a key US ally in the Middle East with common interests ranging from energy security to counter-terrorism, and has been one of the leading advocates of foreign intervention to end the conflict in neighbouring Syria.
NATO DEPLOYMENT Around 400 US soldiers have arrived in Turkey over the past few weeks to operate Patriot anti-missile batteries meant to defend against any spillover of Syria’s civil war, part of a NATO deployment due to be operational in the coming days. US Ambassador Francis Ricciardone emerged through the main gate of the embassy, which is surrounded by high walls, shortly after the explosion to address reporters, flanked by a security detail as a Turkish police helicopter hovered overhead.
“We are very sad of course that we lost one of our Turkish guards at the gate,” Ricciardone said, thanking the Turkish authorities for a prompt response. A Reuters witness saw one wounded person being lifted into an ambulance as police armed with assault rifles cordoned off the area. “It was a huge explosion. I was sitting in my shop when it happened. I saw what looked like a body part on the ground,” said travel agent Kamiyar Barnos, whose shop window was shattered around 100 metres away from the blast. State broadcaster TRT said the attacker was thought to be from The Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C), which wants a socialist state and is vehemently anti-American, according to the US National Counterterrorism Centre (NCTC). The group, deemed a terrorist organisation by both the United States and Turkey, was blamed for a suicide attack in 2001 that killed two police officers and a tourist in Istanbul’s central Taksim Square.
THE U.N. refugee agency said yesterday that it had reached an opposition-held area of north Syria for the first time and found about 45,000 displaced people living in appalling conditions. A senior UN official voiced fears that other parts of the country could contain similar untold stories of suffering and he said Syria faced systematic destruction. The Syrian government agreed to give the UN access to the zone of Azaz north of Aleppo near the Turkish border, enabling a convoy to deliver tents and blankets to needy people living in the open in sub-zero temperatures. “This is an area that the UN has not been able to physically reach ever since the beginning of the conflict,” Yacoub El Hillo, director of UNHCR’s Middle East and North Africa Bureau, told reporters in Geneva. El Hillo, who was in Syria last week, added: “It is an appalling situation in Syria today. Probably all these figures are not capturing the true story of how Syria, the people but also the country, are facing systematic destruction.” UN supplies including food have reached Azaz, “a very
UNHCR’s Yacoub El Hillo said Syria faced systematic destruction far corner of the country” in the northwest from time to time, but via partner agencies and not UN staff. “People have been stranded, cut off without any systematic aid,” he said. “It is a breakthrough,” UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards told Reuters. Azaz is located opposite Kilis camp on the Turkish side that holds about 10,000 Syrian refugees who have crossed that border, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). “On this (Syrian) side it is
makeshift camps in appalling conditions. So hopefully this will be the first of many, many convoys that we will be operating,” El Hillo said. UNHCR’s eight-truck convoy delivered 2,000 tents and 15,000 blankets to Azaz after taking three days to reach the area from a civilian airport near Latakia on the Syrian coast, he said. “They want us to continue, it could not have happened without the Syrian government. For the planes to land near Latakia we had to have landing permits and also for the trucks to move,” El Hillo said. “It is indeed our aim to move the next convoy in the few days with larger quantities of aid to this population in that part of the country but also many other parts of the country where displaced families are today in disputed areas and not only in government-controlled areas.” The government of President Bashar al-Assad, locked in a two-year conflict, does not allow UN agencies to enter rebel-held areas from across its borders but agencies including Medecins Sans Frontieres have been active in Azaz, he said.

Thousands stage anti-Mursi protests in Egypt THOUSANDS of opponents of President Mohamed Mursi returned to the streets of Egypt yesterday, demanding his overthrow after the deadliest violence of his seven months in power. Men in black shirts of mourning marched through the Suez Canal city of Port Said, scene of the worst bloodshed of the past 9 days, chanting and shaking their fists. “There is no God but God and Mohamed Mursi is the enemy of God,” they chanted.
Brandishing portraits of those killed in the latest violence, they shouted: “We will die like they did, to get justice!” Protests marking the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak have killed nearly 60 people since January 25, prompting the head of the army to warn this week that the state was on the verge of collapse. Protesters also marched in Alexandria, Ismailia and the capital Cairo.

Business Wall St rallies on upbeat figures
Eurozone inflation falls to two-year low in January
US stocks hit five-year highs yesterday after jobs and manufacturing data showed the economy’s sluggish recovery is still on track. The Dow industrials hit 14,000 for the first time since mid October 2007 and the S&P hit its highest level since December that year. The S&P gained 5 per cent last month, its best start to a year since 1997. Employment grew modestly in January, with 157,000 jobs added in the month, slightly below expectations for 160,000. Still, figures for both November and December were revised upwards. Separate reports showed the pace of growth in the US manufacturing sector picked up in January to its highest level in nine months, US consumer sentiment rose more than expected last month, and December construction spending came in higher than forecasts. “All the data seems to keep pointing to a slowly, steadily improving economy,” said Eric Kuby, chief investment officer at North Star Investment Management Corp in Chicago. Market sentiment is pointing to weaker bond prices as stocks are moving up, and the economy seems to be confirming that trend, he said. The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI rose 138.31 points or 1 per cent, to 13,998.89, the S&P 500 .SPX gained 12.26 points or 0.82 per cent, to 1,510.37 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC added 22.82 points or 0.73 per cent, to 3,164.95. With the day’s gains, major averages were on track for a fifth straight week of gains. The S&P 500 is also coming off its best monthly performance since October 2011. Corporate earnings were also in focus, with a trio of Dow components reporting profits that beat expectations.
Inflation falls to lowest since November 2010 By Robin Emmott EUROZONE inflation fell to a two-year low in January as companies cut prices at a time of record joblessness, potentially giving the European Central Bank more scope to lower interest rates later this year. Inflation in the 17 countries using the euro fell to 2 per cent in January compared to a year ago, the EU’s statistics office Eurostat said yesterday, its lowest level since November 2010 and well down from a 3 per cent peak in September 2011. That puts the annual rate of increase in the cost of living just shy of the ECB’s target of close to, but below 2 per cent. With Eurostat figures also showing eurozone unemployment at a record 11.7 per cent of the working population in December, the ECB appears to have room to lower rates again to stimulate an economy that has slipped into its second recession since 2009. “Inflation is non-existent,” said Thomas Costerg, an economist at Standard Chartered in London. “Now with German inflation decelerating, that will fuel debate about how the ECB will ease policy,” he said, forecasting a cut in the ECB’s main refinancing rate in the second quarter.
Men look at newspapers at a kiosk in downtown Lisbon on January 23, 2013. Unemployment levels, holding steady at just 5.3 per cent in Germany, rose again in Portugal to 16.5 per cent For the past year, inflation has been driven by oil prices and tax increases, but stripping out those factors, annual consumer price rises are around 1 per cent, reflecting the weakness of the economy. The ECB’s governing council kept rates at 0.75 per cent at its January meeting and will discuss rate policy again on February 7. The decision to keep policy on hold was unanimous last month, but economists are still divided over the ECB’s future moves. Thirty-eight out of 73 analysts polled in January by Reuters said the ECB will remain

tween wealthier, northern countries which are showing signs of emerging from the eurozone’s three-year-old debt crisis, and countries such as Spain and Italy that are in deep recession. Stark differences between eurozone countries’ ability to borrow also raises questions about the value of a rate cut. The divergence in fortunes of eurozone economies is evident not just in their ability to fund themselves, but in the rates of joblessness seen across the bloc of 330 million people. Highlighting the human cost of a debt crisis that began in
2009 in Greece and spread to the eurozone’s biggest economies, some 18.7 million people were out of work in December, an unemployment rate of 11.7 per cent. That figure has risen from below 8 per cent in early 2008, just before the full effects of the global financial crisis were fully felt, and is well above 11.3 per cent forecast by the European Commission for end-2012. Unemployment held steady at just 5.3 per cent in Germany, the eurozone’s biggest economy, however but rose again in Portugal and Cyprus, to 16.5 per cent and 14.7 per cent respectively.

on hold in the first quarter. None expected a rate cut next week. A stronger euro, which rose to a 14-month peak yesterday, could also dampen the export-led economic recovery and potentially support the case for a rate cut. A third consecutive improvement in eurozone business morale in January and better factory output suggest the bloc has passed the worst of its recession, however, meaning further ECB stimulus in the form of lower borrowing costs may not be needed. The ECB’s task is also complicated by a divide be-
British factory output grew at the fastest pace since September 2011, the survey published yesterday showed
BRITAIN’S manufacturing sector again expanded modestly in January, raising hopes the economy can avoid a new recession, although activity grew less than a month before and was below expectations. Factory output, however, grew at the fastest pace since September 2011, the survey published yesterday showed. Lower factory output was a key reason for a contraction in the last quarter of 2012 which left Britain’s economy within sight of its third recession in four years. The Markit/CIPS Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) inched down to 50.8 from a downwardly revised 51.2 in December. That was just short of forecasts for a reading of 51.0 but for a second month running was above the 50 level that separates growth from contraction. “Broadly the findings argue against the UK going into a triple-dip recession, and ... offer hope that a more sustainable recovery might be in train,” said Philip Shaw, economist at Investec. Others were more cautious, noting that new orders hardly grew, tempering optimism about the first quarter of 2013. Rob Dobson, the Markit economist who compiled the survey, said the wider impact of manufacturing’s January expansion would be
limited as the sector accounts for only about 10 per cent of the economy. “The survey will do little to assuage fears of a triple-dip recession unless accompanied by an improvement in the services sector,” he said. Markit’s January services sector PMI will be published on Tuesday. In a clear sign of faster output growth, the PMI component measuring the change in factory output from the previous month climbed to 54.2 from 53.4 in December, despite a reported hit from poor weather. “Sterling’s weakness, plus indications of firmer demand in key export markets such as the eurozone, notably Germany, and emerging markets such as China should also help lift sales in coming months,” Dobson said. For now, companies said weak demand from continental Europe was behind the 13th consecutive drop in new export orders. In further good news for the economy, government data showed that the number of companies which went into liquidation in England and Wales in the last three months of 2012 fell to its lowest level since the second quarter of 2008. Markit said production of consumer goods grew robustly last month and output of intermediate products such as car engines also rose.

Opinion
Better checks and balances needed for office of president A FEW weeks before we elect a new president, perhaps it would be worthwhile to consider the staggering powers enjoyed by the President of the Republic constitutionally. In effect the president could be likened to an elected dictator, because once installed in office he or she cannot be touched. The legislature could block the state budget, reject the laws that are submitted to it and make it difficult for the government to rule but that is as far as it could go, because in a presidential system there is no such thing as a vote of confidence. The Cyprus president is unaccountable for the five years he is in office and could do pretty much anything he pleases until his term is up. We witnessed this constitutional abuse of power in the five years of Christofias’ rule during which he drove the state to bankruptcy, through his inaction, without anyone being able to intervene. There were countless warnings by politicians, former ministers, business people, the Central Bank and the European Commission but the president ignored them all and did nothing, with catastrophic results for the country. No practical steps could be taken to stop the slide towards the economic abyss, because there are no constitutional provisions to check presidential power. The problem dates back to 1963 when the Turkish Cypriots withdrew from the Republic. Under the 1960 constitution, there was a Turkish Cypriot vicepresident who had veto powers and could thus exercise control over the Greek Cypriot president, but after the breakdown of the bi-communal state the checks on balances on the president vanished. And without checks and balances there is no accountability either. There is the illusion that government decisions are taken collectively by the Council of Ministers, but this is chosen by the president who can fire any member of the Council that does not toe the presidential line. Understandably, no president has ever considered his excessive powers and lack of accountability to be a problem. But none of the political parties have expressed concerns about this constitutional imbalance that gives dictatorial powers to the president. In the aftermath of Mari, Giorgos Lillikas suggested there should be a constitutional procedure for unseating the president. While this was an idea worth exploring, the more pressing need is the imposition of checks and controls on presidential powers, in order to make the head of state more accountable while in office. It could be too late, as has been proved, to wait until the next elections to make a president accountable for all the damage he may have caused the country while exercising his unchecked powers.

The Annan plan had no place in election debate Comment Makarios Drousiotis
T
HE DISAPPOINTMENTS in last Monday’s televised election debate were not the presidential candidates, but the four journalists who stayed glued to the Annan plan. Until 2003, the 1974 coup featured prominently in the election agenda. From 2004 onwards, after the rapprochement of the hard core Makarios and Grivas supporters, the main agenda of elections has become the Annan plan. In reality, this agenda has no takers outside the political and journalistic communities. It is out of place and time and those who invest politically in the ‘no-vote’ of nine years ago have no contact with current reality. If the Annan plan had to be discussed in the election in this campaign, the issue should not have been who voted for or against it. The debate should have focused on the revelation by Giorgos Lillikas that Tassos Papadopoulos, in his five years as president was handling the national issue under ‘false pretences’. During the TV debate Lillikas made two important revelations. First, he said that condition – ‘with the right content’ – for accepting a bi-zonal, bicommunal federation (BBF) by Papadopoulos was a ruse for indirectly rejecting bi-zonal federation. Second, the July 8 agreement, by which Papadopoulos committed himself to BBF with his signature, was also a ruse to ease the pressures that followed the rejection of the Annan plan. However, according to Lillikas, the (UN Under-Secretary General Ibrahim) Gambari letter fol-
Those who invest politically in the ‘no-vote’ nine years ago are out of touch with current reality lowed and it annulled the commitment to BBF. If Lillikas made these revelations out of honesty rather than stupidity, he would also have said that the interpretation given to the Gambari letter was also a scam. In this letter the UN Under-Secretary General explained the implementation procedure for the July 8 agreement. How could a third party, annul an agreement that was signed by the leaders of the two communities? The letter contains an ambiguous reference (Lillikas knows well how this slipped into the letter) which the Papadopoulos government interpreted in the way it suited it, because at the time, as Lillikas admitted, the government was not engaging in conventional politics but in trickeries. Lillikas assertion that BBF was never on Papadopoulos’ agenda is an admission of the following: - When in 2002-2003 he was pledging that, if elected, he
would negotiate the Annan plan he was consciously lying to the electorate. - When he sent letters to the UN Secretary General which circulated as official UN documents, claiming he wanted a settlement based on the Annan plan he was lying to the international community. - When he was declaring in Brussels that he wanted a settlement based on the Annan plan, before Cyprus’ accession to the EU, he was taking EU officials for a ride. - When he went the Burgenstock he refused to engage in negotiations because he did not want any improvements made to a settlement plan he did not believe in. - The poisonous reports against the plan filed from Burgenstock by reporters, briefed by the Papadopoulos government, were just another act of the government-staged theatre. Lillikas told us that Papadopoulos did not want BBF
but did not have the political courage to say so, hiding behind the condition for the ‘the right content’ instead. Through continuous tactical manoeuvring and trickery we arrived at decision-time. Instead of the president taking responsibility, he played with people’s emotions, fuelling their fears so that this political farce could acquire popular legitimacy. In these conditions, with Christofias staging his own theatre, there was one political leader, who had the guts to go against the flow, standing up and taking a clear position. And instead of this honest stand being respected, our journalists have been demanding, for the last eight years, that he apologise for staying true to his beliefs. They should apologise together with Lillikas for the false pretences and not Anastasiades for a position that was not tested. Theirs was and we all know where it has led us.
Greeks have highest resistance to antibiotics in EU... AT THE pharmacy in Athens airport there are no questions asked when I request a packet of the antibiotic Amoxil. They dispense them to me in a few seconds for just over €5. I like to keep an emergency pack when I am working away in remote places, just in case. So it is no surprise that the Greeks have developed the highest levels of resistance to antibacterial infections such as e coli and klebsiella pneumonia: they are closely followed by the Cypriots. It means that Greek hospital doctors face a new threat, apart from staff shortages and lack of resources, a pneumonia causing superbug that most antibiotics can’t kill and a population that has become immune. The danger of the unregulated use of antibiotics has long been known, and as penicillin-based compounds

fail to work, the drug companies are in a furious race to be one step ahead of the mutating bacteria. It is known that nine out of ten sore throats are viral and treatment by antibiotics useless and yet Greeks are used to using the pharmacy as a village shop. In small rural communities and on the islands the pharmacist, although highly trained, will often dispense drugs on demand. This comes in a week when David Cameron has laid down the gauntlet to Europe, want-
ing to renegotiate and reform, to return powers to the nation states from the centre and yet the most pressing problems, the ones that may literally mean life and death, which universal EU appliance of rules could solve, are ignored. Dame Sally Davies, the UK’s Chief Medical Officer, issued a frightening warning this week saying the situation was so serious that she could envisage an ‘apocalyptic’ scenario where in 20 years people having operations would die from routine infections because we had run out of drugs to treat them. It has made her ask for the resistance to frontline antibiotics to be added to the government’s national risk register of civil emergencies. The problem is compounded now by a growing trend for people to self diagnose from the internet and then, even in
the UK, where the dispensing of drugs is highly regulated, to order from companies online based abroad. What makes people do this is convenience. Too often people are frustrated by not being able to obtain doctors appointments and then when they finally do they are told to go away rest and take an ibuprofen. But workplace law means without doctors’ certificates you lose pay, busy lives demand people to be on their feet 24/7 and people are frightened to call in sick for fear of losing their job. It’s a long way from the days when the herb filled hillsides of Cyprus would provide all the cures you would need and wild mountain sage tea would see you safely through the winter’s coughs and colds. Maybe, it’s time to return to the old ways...

Beyonce sang to pre-recorded track at Obama inauguration Superstar promises to sing live at the Super Bowl
By Piya Sinha-Roy
By Simon Evans SINGER Beyonce said she sang along to a pre-recorded track at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, but delivered a stirring acappella version of the US national anthem at a Super Bowl news conference yesterday. She also said she would be singing live at the half-time show of the National Football League championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens at the Superdome on Sunday. Beyonce’s performance of the Star-Spangled Banner at the January 21 inauguration ceremony sparked a debate over whether she had lip-synched her performance in Washington. “I am a perfectionist and one thing about me is that I practice until my feet bleed and I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra,” the Grammy-winning artist said this week. “It was a live television show and a very, very important emotional show for me and one of my proudest moments, and due to the weather, to the delay, due to no proper sound check, I did not feel comfortable taking

Beyonce’s performance of the Star-Spangled Banner at the January 21 inauguration ceremony sparked a debate over whether she had lip-synched her performance in Washington. She has since admitted that she did the risk. “It was about the president and the inauguration and I wanted to make him and my country proud, so I decided to sing along with my pre-recorded track, which is very common in the music industry, and I am very proud of my performance,” she said. Beyonce, 31, one of pop music’s biggest celebrities,
surprised the media yesterday by asking them to rise at the start of her news conference and launching into a solo version of the US national anthem. After the applause in the room died down, she asked the hundreds of media representatives, “Any questions?” Asked if she planned to
sing live during the Super Bowl game, annually one of the most-watched TV events in the United States, the singer said: “I will absolutely be singing live. This is what I was born to do, it is what I was born for.” The NFL also said that Jennifer Hudson would perform America the Beautiful with the chorus from Sandy
Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and six adults were killed in a mass shooting in December. Alicia Keys will sing the national anthem before the game’s kickoff, while other artists, including OneRepublic and Matchbox Twenty, will be part of the televised pr-egame show.
Gervais, Fey to join the Whitney anniversary tribute Muppets in comedy caper THE Muppets are planning to dominate the big screen again with a 1960s-style comedy caper starring Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey, director James Bobin said this week. The Muppets ... Again! will follow the Muppets cast - including Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy - as they take their show on a world tour only to be unwittingly ensnared in an international theft scheme perpetrated by villain Constantine, who looks identical to Kermit. Gervais plays the sidekick to villain Constantine, while Fey takes on the role of prison guard Nadya. Modern Family actor Ty Burrell will play an Interpol agent. The film will pay homage to the 1960s comedy sleuthing Pink Panther movies, starring British comedian Peter Sellers. “It’s a tip of the hat to the old-school crime capers of the ‘60s, but featuring a frog, a pig, a bear and a dog - no panthers, even pink ones - along with the usual Muppet-y mix of mayhem, music and laughs,” Bobin said in a statement. Bobin made his directorial feature film debut with 2011’s The Muppets, starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams, which revived pop culture interest in the puppet characters first created by Jim Henson in the 1950s. Hollywood studio Walt Disney said The Muppets ... Again!, a follow-up to The Muppets, is set to be released in theatres on March 21, 2014. The film will be shot on location in Los Angeles and London at the renowned Pinewood Studios, home to the James Bond films.
Houston drowned in a Beverly Hills hotel room on February 11 2012 - the eve of last year’s Grammy Awards
GRAMMY organisers plan to mark the first anniversary of the sudden death of Whitney Houston with a behindthe-scenes TV show on how they scrambled to honour the singer just 24 hours after she died. The Recording Academy said yesterday that the hour-long special entitled The Grammys Will Go On: A Death in the Family will air on February 9, the day before the 2013 Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Houston, who sold hundreds of millions of records and scored the mega hits I Will Always Love You and I Wanna Dance with Somebody, drowned in a bathtub at a Beverly Hills hotel room on February 11 2012 - the eve of last year’s Grammy Awards show. Houston’s unexpected death at age 48 cast a shadow over the event, which quickly changed its programme to pay homage to the soaring voice that had dominated the Grammys in decades
EMMY-WINNING TV comedy 30 Rock bowed out after seven seasons on Thursday with bittersweet farewells but giving all its zany characters a happy ending. The satirical show-within-ashow about the inside workings of a fictional television sketch series saw Tina Fey’s hapless writer Liz Lemon try to round up her unruly cast for a last hurrah. Along the way, unpredictable sketch star Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) causes chaos, self-centred actress Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski) attempts to find her true calling on Broadway, and producer Pete Hornberger (Scott Adsit) finally achieves his dream to disappear without a trace. The show’s simpleton pageturned-janitor Kenneth Parcell (Jack McBrayer) finds himself in his element with his sudden promotion to head of television network NBC. But under the jokes, the cast showed some real emotion in Thursday’s hourlong series finale. “There’s a reason people don’t say honest goodbyes. It’s because when stuff is coming to an end, people freak out and they act crazy,” Liz tells Tracy.
CULT FAVOURITE Despite small audiences, 30 Rock became a cult favourite, while Liz has been a hero for single geeky women as she tackled the male-dominated world of network television, with phrases such as “what the what,” “blerg” and “I want to go to there” becoming popular. The show’s finale comes after perpetual unluckyin-love Liz finally got her happy ending earlier in the season with her marriage to hot dog vendor Criss Chross (James Marsden) and they adopt two children. But after grappling with the trials of being a stay-athome mother, Liz and Criss agree to swap roles and she returns to work. Liz also finds peace in her dysfunctional relationship with suave, egotistical network executive Jack Donaghy (played by Alec Baldwin). Thursday’s show also saw the return of guest stars Julianne Moore and Salma Hayek as Jack’s ex-girlfriends, Conan O’Brien as one of Liz’s ex-boyfriends, along with appearances from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit stars Ice-T and Richard Belzer and Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader in the US House of Representatives, as herself. 30 Rock was inspired by Fey’s stint as head writer for Saturday Night Live. It has won multiple Emmys since its 2006 premiere but has always suffered from low audience ratings.

Microsoft launches new Office software MICROSOFT Corp launched its new Office software his week, featuring constantly updated, online access to documents from a range of devices as the world’s largest software company attempts to tailor its most profitable product to a mobile generation. The new Office suite of applications - including desktop staples Outlook email, Excel charts, Word and PowerPoint marks the first overhaul since 2010 and aims to beat back growing competition from Google Inc’s free online apps. “The notion of an always up-to-date streaming version of Office comes directly from how people are using devices today,” said Kurt DelBene, head of Microsoft’s Office unit, in a phone interview. “You really want all your content to roam with you. We see that as an opportunity to deliver what customers are asking for.” The consumer-focused version of the new software, called Office 365 Home Premium, launched on Tuesday. After downloading the basic programs online, users can access the latest versions of all Office applications from up to five devices on a subscription basis for $100 a year. The software will be updated online, marking a change from the past where users had to wait years for upgrades to installed software. The new Office largely adopts the look of last year’s Windows 8, with a cleaner, more modern-looking design and includes touch-screen capability. The ‘ribbons’ showing commands in Word and Excel are mostly unchanged. For the first time the package includes online calling and video service Skype, which Microsoft bought in 2011. Users’ work can be stored in remote data centres - known as ‘the cloud’ - and the latest version of a document accessed from any licensed device with a browser that the user wants to work on. Two-and-a-half years in the making, the new Office is designed to counter the growing popularity of Google Apps, a collection of online-only, Office-style applications Google provides free for home users and sells to businesses for $50 per user per year.
By Barbara Liston AMERICANS may be turning away from the hard sciences at universities, but they are increasingly showing up at “science cafes” in local bars and restaurants to listen to scientific talks over a drink or a meal. Want a beer with that biology? Or perhaps a burger with the works to complement the theory of everything? Science cafes have sprouted in almost every state including a tapas restaurant near downtown Orlando where Sean Walsh, 27, a graphic designer, describes himself and his friends as some of the laymen in the crowd. “We just want to learn and whatever we take in, we take in. But we’re also socialising and having a nice time,” said Walsh, who a drank beer, ate Tater Tots and learned a little about asteroids and radiation at two recent events. Others in the crowd come with scientific credentials to hear particular scientists lecture on a narrowly focused field of interest. But the typical participant brings at least some collegelevel education or at least a lively curiosity, said Edward Haddad, executive director of the Florida Academy of Sciences, which helped start up Orlando’s original cafe and organises the events. “You’re going to engage the (National Public Radio) crowd very easily here,” said Linda Walters, a marine conservation biologist from the University of Central Florida who has lectured twice at the Orlando-area science cafes. Haddad said the current national push to increase the number of US graduates
Casual interest: the US science cafe movement grew out of Cafe Scientifique in the United Kingdom, which began in Leeds in 1998 in science, technology, engineering and math, or the STEM fields, is driving up the number of science cafes. In Orlando, an Orange County STEM Council consisting of business, government and educational leaders recently asked Haddad to help two interested parties launch new science cafes in the downtown library and in a large new town development.
The US science cafe movement grew out of Cafe Scientifique in the United Kingdom. The first Cafe Scientifique popped up in Leeds in 1998 as a regularly scheduled event where all interested parties could participate in informal forums about the latest in science and technology. Traditionally held in pubs and restaurants, the Cafe Scientifique would start as
Apple loses Samsung patent appeal A U.S. appeals court on Thursday rejected Apple Inc’s request to revive its bid for a sales ban on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone, dashing the iPhone maker’s attempt to recover crucial leverage in the global patent wars. Apple had asked the full Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington, DC, to revisit a decision in October by a three-judge panel of the same court. The panel rejected Apple’s request to impose a sales ban on Samsung’s Nexus smartphone ahead of a trial set for March 2014. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment. A Samsung representative could not immediately be reached. The fight in appeals court comes after Apple won a $1.05 billion verdict last year against Samsung in a US District Court in California. The same trial judge will preside over the legal battle surrounding the Nexus phone, which involves a patent not
Apple had wanted a sales ban on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone (above) included in the earlier trial. The fight has been widely viewed as a proxy war between Apple and Google Inc. Samsung’s hot-selling Galaxy smartphones and tablets run on Google’s Android operating system, which Apple’s late co-founder, Steve Jobs, once denounced as a “stolen product”.
In its October ruling against Apple, the appeals court raised the bar for potentially marketcrippling injunctions on product sales based on narrow patents for phone features. The legal precedent puts Samsung in a much stronger position by allowing its products to remain on store shelves while it fights a global patent battle against Apple over smartphone technology. US District Judge Lucy Koh, in San Jose, California, who has presided over much of the Apple/Samsung litigation in the United States, cited the appeals’ court decision in a December order rejecting Apple’s request for permanent sales bans on several Samsung phones. Apple has appealed Koh’s ruling. Apple wanted the full Federal Circuit of Appeals, made up of nine active judges, to reverse the earlier ruling. But in a brief order on Thursday, the court rejected Apple’s request without detailed explanation or any published dissents.
a short lecture, followed by a short break to re-fill glasses, and then an open discussion, according to the organisation’s website. The American movement of independent cafes is loosely organised at the sciencecafe. org website created by public broadcaster WGBH’s NOVA science program. Haddad said NOVA several years ago provided a few hundred dollars of seed money to groups
around the country that wanted to start a cafe. However, anyone with a venue, a speaker and a marketing plan can start one. On the sciencecafe.org website, an interactive map shows the location of cafes across the United States and around the globe from Islamabad, Pakistan, to Antwerp, Belgium, to the Hawaiian islands. Some cafes have cropped up in bookstores, theatres and high school campuses. In Viera, Florida, about 60 mostly retirees regularly pack a pizzeria to hear speakers from the well-regarded Brevard Zoo or NASA’s nearby Kennedy Space Centre. In Daytona Beach, scientists from the internationally known Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University draw standing-room-only crowds at a local coffee shop. Haddad said his hope for the cafes is to engage the public and generate excitement about the STEM fields that might filter down to the next generation. “My feeling is STEM begins at home, with students who are being brought up by parents or relatives who have some interest in science and may encourage them to do that,” Haddad said. Attending a cafe does not guarantee a speaker as engaging as the popular host of television programmes Bill Nye the Science Guy, as Walsh learned when he got lost in the extensive jargon of one lecture. “I don’t know that every scientist is gifted with the ability to work a crowd as well as deliver a lecture on targeted radiation therapy for tumors,” said Walsh. “If you can find one that hits both those things, they should have their own television show.”

Canned food had its origins in a 1795 French invention
Canning method invented In 1795, a prize of 12,000 francs was offered by the French government for a method of preserving food and transporting it to its armies. The winner was Nicholas Appert, a French chef who invented a way to can food. He developed the method of heating food in airtight glass jars, not very different from the home-bottling method now using Mason jars. He published The art of preserving animal and vegetable substances for several years, in Paris in 1801. Appert was also the inventor of the bouillon cube.

EN minutes into conversation with Dan Mazer, the writer and director of the new British film comedy, I Give It a Year, I put my foot in it. The film, which Mazer, 35, describes as an “anti rom-com”, begins with a disastrous wedding ceremony, followed by the creeping realisation that the bride and groom – buffoonish writer Josh (Rafe Spall) and ambitious advertising executive Nat (Rose Byrne) - are completely unsuited to one another. Instead of hoping that they get together, you spend the film rooting for them to
divorce. As Mazer points out, splitting up is much funnier than getting together. It’s an enjoyable subversion of the genre, as you’d expect from Sacha Baron Cohen’s old school friend and the director of the Borat and Brüno films. The “rom” part lives up to the traditions of the producers, Working Title, too, allowing him to “have his cake and eat it”, as he puts it. I did have one problem with it, though, I tell him. I couldn’t believe that Nat would ever marry an imbecile like Josh, an emotionally retarded beta male. I mean, what a loser! “Yeah, he
is sort of, quite based on…” Mazer gives a little shimmy in his chair. “He is quite autobiographical, is Josh.” Oh, that Josh! Sorry, I was talking about that dreadful fellow... Josh whatshisname. Oh, your Josh has a heart of gold. “I’m perfectly prepared to acknowledge that I’m a dick and I am a beta male,” laughs Mazer. “You can go a long way on a bit of charm and being funny around a dinner table. But the reality of me is that I soon become incredibly annoying. I have a lot of comedy writer friends, and it’s a pretty universal
Lead characters in I Give it a Year Simon Baker, Anna Faris, Rose Byrne and Rafe Spall
phenomenon that their wives eventually stop finding them funny.” In Mazer’s case, the withering looks come from a fellow comedian, Daisy Donovan who should make a welcome return to our screens this summer. The pair met when they were both working on the anarchic British TV satire, The 11 O’Clock Show, back in the late Nineties. They have now been married for seven years and have two daughters, Maisie and Minnie Ivy (no joke). “People think we must have the most hilarious household - and to some extent we do,” he says. “Until it comes to the point that we’re both being so funny that everything collapses and it becomes a scene of torment and heartbreak.” There’s a point in the film where Josh’s parents remark to him that the first year of marriage is the hardest which, he says, was painfully true in his case. “But I think it’s better that way - each year has been better than the last. But it’s hard to make everything work, and it takes commitment.” He was inspired to write the film after attending a succession of fancy weddings where it was apparent that no one had grasped this crucial idea. At one of them, the only endearing thing the groom could find in his wife was the way she would root for the car keys in her handbag – it was over in a year. “It’s rare to have to work for something these days,” he says. “People get it the wrong way around
Dan Mazer is the man who with his friend Sacha Bar going solo with his first film rom-com, he tells now: it’s all about the wedding and nothing about the marriage, which is an arseabout-face way of looking at things, really.” This is precisely the sort of nonsense propagated by rom-coms such as 27 Dresses, which is why he bristles at the label. “It’s not reality - and reality is where everything that’s funny comes from. I mean, what would actually happen to the couple in, say, Leap Year once they got married? You think: ‘Hang on! You’re incredibly ill-suited to each other. You really haven’t thought this through, Amy Adams and Matthew Goode’.” Mazer is clearly relishing his
first solo project, after years as a sideman (albeit one with Golden Globes and Emmys to his name). “As a boy growing up in Ruislip, I didn’t imagine I could be a movie director,” he says. Still, his comedy lineage actually stretches back to his school days at Haberdashers’ Aske’s in Hertfordshire, where he was friends with Baron Cohen. “We still have essentially the same motivation that we had then, just to go around causing mischief. It’s taken us to this point, which seems remarkable and slightly unfair,” he reflects. Mazer cut his teeth as a producer on The 11 O’Clock Show, which helped launch the careers of some of the big-

o created Borat and Brüno on Cohen - and he’s now m, I Give It a Year. It’s an anti s Richard Godwin gest names in British comedy. Baron Cohen first debuted Ali G; Ricky Gervais used to play the fauxbigot, and Mackenzie Crook and Donovan were co presenters with the “fifth Beatle”, Iain Lee (“Yeah, I’m not sure what he’s doing at the moment.”) While it had its critics, the satire show possessed something that its worthy contemporary equivalent, 10 O’Clock Live sorely lacks: anarchy (remember the inexplicable campaign to get Nicky Campbell elected London mayor?). “I think we’re going through a phase now when it’s all a bit cosier,” says Mazer. “You want Miranda, or Rev, or Michael McIntyre. When we
were doing The 11 O’Clock Show in the late Nineties, it was boom time. It’s always a reaction to what’s going on in the world.” At a recent 11 O’Clock Show reunion, the tone of the old episodes shocked him. “There were a lot of people who were too young being given free rein,” he says. “There were jokes about Harold Shipman as he was being convicted. On the day of Jill Dando’s death, we were making jokes about it. Reprehensible, really.” Nowadays, this would surely be swiftly followed by public apologies, sackings and inquiries. Then, it was “an extraordinary opportunity to allow a generation to find their
comic voices”, he says. There were occasions when they pushed it too hard. A performer called Robert Popper (who went on to create the sitcom Friday Night Dinner) played a showbiz reporter whose sole comic purpose was to interview eminent people, and then get so nervous he would vomit on them. Channel 4 took rather a dim view when they gate-crashed its political awards ceremony to throw up on an unsuspecting Mikhail Gorbachev. Mazer also helped to stage those early Ali G stunts. “Sacha would be in character the entire time. For me, the funniest bits were off-camera. You’d see him introduce himself to Tony Benn: ‘So how do we spell Tony? Is it T-O-NE-E?’ You’d see these politicians thinking: ‘What on earth have I let myself in for?’” Baron Cohen is rare among British TV comedians in his successful transfer to the big screen. “It’s always bemused me why that should be,” Mazer concedes. He suggests that one reason why British film comedies often fail is that instead of choosing British comedy actors, the producers insist on Hollywood stars with “nominal box- office appeal”, but who don’t know how to be funny. “It was always my intention to have as many funny people in the film as possible,” he says. “It was like playing Fantasy Football with actors.” Fortunately, most of them said yes - and the most enjoyable aspect of I Give It a Year is the prominence it gives them. There’s Stephen Merchant as the idiotic best man; Alex MacQueen as a vicar; Olivia Colman as a stunningly insensitive marriage councillor, and Tim Key, a film stealer as the couple’s awkward solicitor. “I’ve had American agents look at that Tim Key scene, and go ‘Who’s THAT guy? We gotta sign him up!’” There is also the man who Mazer identifies as the next big thing in British comedy: Dustin Demri-Burns, who is
o, part of the sketch duo, n Cardinal Burns. “It’s an interesting thing aboutt the ape. British comedy landscape. hing Every two years, something norcomes along that is ginormous. The Fast Show … Ali G … The Office … Litbetle Britain … The Inbe’re tweeners … and now we’re waiting for the next one.. I think that will probably be Cardinal Burns.” It’s worth paying attention to Mazer’s tips,, I on sense. The funniest person he knows, he says, is his cer best man, a TV producer named Chris Little. The speech at his wedding to ven Donovan had been given tors a light edit by the creators They of The Inbetweeners. “They n all persuaded him to put in the terrible anecdotes that n. As my wife had forbidden. she realised where each anece him dote was going, she gave ad to this death stare. He had abort every story. The rabbi aid to who did our wedding said him it was one of the worst best man speeches he’d ever heard. But at least he’s still allowed to come around our house.”

An alternative movie experience These days it’s not enough to be munching on popcorn in the back row of the movies, and watching some teen-targeted fare. The cinema experience has been revolutionised. Ever-rising ticket prices, combined with an onslaught of digitally-enhanced, mediocre movies being churned out of Hollywood, are leaving more movie-goers turned off instead of tuned in. It’s no wonder that the numbers at multiplex movie box offices are in a slump, and alternative movie-going experiences are on the rise. If you’re not watching a film in the open air or engaging in a Q and A with the director and waiting for an after-party, then you’re not making the most of what Cyprus has to offer cinema-goers. On Monday, the Pharos Arts Foundation began its annual film screenings at the Shoe Factory, offering locals another extraordinary selection of rare, eclectic films. The films are intended to be experienced as a whole, providing a fascinating glimpse into the human condition – the folly of its destructive tendencies as well as its creative exuberance. These films explore the great struggles of the human spirit and the search for meaning and beauty. All screenings take place on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8pm. The films are shown in their original language with English subtitles (where applicable) and best of all the entrance is free. Here is a tasting menu of what’s on offer this month. In Examined Life, filmmaker Astra Taylor accompanies some of today’s most influential thinkers on a series of unique excursions playing off the Socratic observation that “the unexamined life is not worth living.” Offering privileged moments with great thinkers from fields ranging from moral philosophy to cultural theory, Examined Life reveals philosophy’s power to transform the way we see the world around us and imagine our place in it. The work from the great Jean-Luc Godard, one of the most adventurous living filmmakers, Notre Musique combines poetry, journalism and philosophy to try to unravel the absurdities and horrors of the modern world. Notre Musique is set in three locations: Hell - a found-footage collage of war, Purgatory - contemporary Sarajevo and Paradise - an idyllic lakeside wood guarded by US Marines. In the film, real life intermingles with actors, and documentary meshes with fiction. The film also follows the parallel stories of two Israeli Jewish
Tomorrow Other Events Open doors KISA (Action for Equality, Support and Anti-Racism) is inviting people from all walks of life to come together and celebrate Cyprus’ burgeoning multicultural community, with food, music, dance and much more. The event which will take place tomorrow is part of the opening festivities of the KISA’s, new Social and Cultural Centre which is located downstairs at the NGO’s premises in old Nicosia. Although small in number, the various ethnic communities that have immigrated to Cyprus provide native Cypriots and tourists with an opportunity to learn about their culture and their way of life.

women: Judith is drawn to the light, Olga is drawn toward darkness. Through evocative language and images, Godard explores a series of conflicting forces: life and death, light and dark, reality and imagination, etc. Don’t miss the rare opportunity to see the late Chris Marker’s masterpiece Grin Without A Cat on February 13 and 18. This is a thoughtful meditation on the revolutionary movement of the ’60s and ’70s, a defining decade of the late 20th century. Part One (Fragile Hands) investigates the influence of the Vietnam War on progressive movements around the world and in France, Part Two (Severed Hands) examines Czechoslovakia’s Prague Spring and the Soviet-led invasion that quashed it. Next up, is a bold new take on Chekhov’s haunting short story, Ward No. 6. Russian filmmaker Karen Shakhnazarov updates the story’s original 19th-century setting to the present day, and intercuts conversations with actual Moscow mental patients with Chekhov’s story to striking effect. The film is a cocktail of anxieties and riddles, showcasing how easy it is to become what we fear most. Artur Aristakisyan’s 1993 documentary, Palms (Ladoni), is an intensely poetic, provocative, even
Often racism is merely an expression of fear of the unknown, but by introducing the culture and traditions of ethnic minorities to the local community in an event such as tomorrow’s, organisations such as KISA hope provide the perfect environment for many communities to showcase and celebrate their own unique culture, thus supporting a vision of a peaceful, stable and inclusive society where individuality is respected and diversity acknowledged. From 11am until late in the evening the happening will feature the sights, sounds and smells of a diverse and varied festival. With exotic food, multicultural musicians and dancers, children’s activities and arts and crafts, this event is catering for all tastes. KISA aims to create a space that attracts and welcomes active participants from all backgrounds, either individuals or groups and collectives including

The Mirror Has Two Faces (LTV, 21.00) The mirror has two faces, and they both show the same thing: I am Barbra Streisand, and I’m not conventionally pretty. Babs (who also directed) is a plain but popular professor; Jeff Bridges is a handsome colleague who, to quote the trailer, “finds meaning in mathematics” (“You think he’s straight?” a saucy young minx asks her friend; “Oh yeah,” comes the reply, “he’s too boring to be gay!”). Jeff seeks a new kind of relationship - a marriage without sex, because sex always gets in the way - and thinks he’s found a suitable candidate in Babs, but Babs misunderstands and it all goes horribly wrong. An enjoyable comedy-dra-
ma but a very strange film, because it’s never clearly established that our heroine is unattractive - Ms. Streisand seems to think her ‘unconventional’ looks speak for themselves - and there’s not much point to the film unless it’s the story of an ugly duckling who turns into a swan. As it stands, it’s a film about a man who marries a woman, doesn’t find her ugly or anything, then wonders why she’s surprised when he doesn’t want to have sex with her. Weird, no? Made in 1996.
The Kane Files: Life of Trial (Novacinema1, 22.00) Just when he thought he was out of it, they pull him back in. Kane (Drew Fuller) is a hired assassin trying
to go straight, and doing pretty well too - at least till his young son falls ill, forcing him to seek help from a local kingpin. “You’ve got a choice to make,” says this very bad man: Kane can do a ‘job’ for him and save his son, or stick to the straight and narrow and the boy will die. An easy choice - but then our hero gets double-crossed, forcing him to escape from prison to seek revenge and save his son. Go, Kane! Not exactly Citizen Kane (chuckle) but straight-to-video, meatand-potatoes action for a Saturday night, though the franchise implied by the title still hasn’t materialised. Not quite sure what ‘Life of Trial’ means, either - a trial life? a life full of trials? is there someone called Trial in the film? - but maybe that’s just me. Made in 2010.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21
There’s a lot going on for you today as Mars, your personal planet, moves into Pisces, and lovely Venus moves into Aquarius. Mars may stir up your dreams and your psyche, bringing vivid fantasies that encourage you to connect with your heart’s desire. Meanwhile, Venus encourages plenty of socializing and hints at a chance of romantic vibes.
There is great potential for socialising today, along with pleasant conversation and the company of good friends. As Venus moves into Aquarius and Mars moves into Pisces, you might also find that things between you and your partner become much sweeter, happier and more productive. You’ve cleared the air - now it’s time for some fun.
It’s all change in the heavens today, as Mars moves into your home zone and Venus into your communication sector. If you have been at a loss as to how to get your place together, you may feel inspired to become more organised. Making a plan and sticking with it could be crucial. Meanwhile, there could be the possibility of an on-line romance.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
Your social life may begin to get more defined, more fun, more active and plenty more interesting. You may be even keener to join groups or clubs, move in new circles, or to connect with certain types of people - mainly those who are creative, artistic and fun to be with. At the same time, it’s worth networking to help your career to progress.
There’s movement in your relationship zone as Mars moves signs and begins to stir things up. If you and your sweetheart have had plans which you have so far failed to manifest, you may decide to make a start. At the same time, Venus in your health zone suggests that you may have a tendency to indulge more than usual, so mind how you go!
Your thoughts, fantasies and dreams may be stirred up enough to do something about them. Although you are usually very down to earth, you may have found it hard to get your act together, especially at the planning stage. The cosmos is encouraging you to get a move on and to make a start today. You may be in the mood to shop too!
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
You may be inspired to go after a goal that you had only vaguely thought about. Suddenly, the vision of what could be may dance before your eyes, encouraging you to believe in yourself and go for it. The desire to explore new ideas is powerful. As Venus changes signs today, moving out of your comfort zone may encourage some full on loving.
If you have been unsure of which way to turn concerning a health issue, you may be more fired up from today and determined to get something done, or at least get some answers. The same goes for diet and exercise, you might be more inspired to make a start. The good news is that Venus’s move into your romance zone, may bring some magic your way.
Have you been treading water as far as your finances are concerned? As Mars moves into your personal financial zone, you may feel like taking action, especially if things seem to be taking a downward spiral. With your intuition at a peak, you may find you get plenty of lucrative opportunities when you act on your dreams. Why not give it a go?
CANCER June 22 - July 22
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22
PISCES February 20 - March 20
As Mars moves into your learning zone, you may find that taking up a course or class could help your career to blossom further down the line. The chance to update your skillset is worth taking, as doing so could help you become financially better off at a later date. Indeed, someone may be thinking about you as much as you’re thinking about them.
If your love life has seemed too quiet lately, with lots of promise but nothing much showing up, then you may be delighted to know that things should improve from today. Mars moves into Pisces, which may create a few waves of the right kind. A special focus on your home zone also makes the perfect ambiance for entertaining at your place.
You may finally begin to feel more in control of your life as Mars moves into your sign today. However, as a Pisces, you may still be faced with the usual dilemma concerning whether to make a heroic effort to follow your star, or whether to go with the flow and see what happens. By taking things one step at a time, your goals will sooner be realised.

Sport Mickelson’s bid for magic 59 falls agonisingly short
IN BRIEF Thunder maul new look Grizzlies
‘That was heartbreaking,’ says Big Phil By Mark Lamport-Stokes PHIL Mickelson came up agonisingly short in a spectacular bid to become the sixth player to dip under 60 on the PGA Tour when his birdie putt for a magical 59 horseshoed out at the Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Arizona. Having lined up a 25footer at the par-four ninth, his final hole in the opening round at the TPC Scottsdale, Mickelson watched in anguish as his ball caught the right edge of the cup before rolling around the back of hole and spinning out. “The last six feet it was right on glide slope, it should have been right in the middle,” Mickelson told the Golf Channel after shooting an 11-under-60. “To have that putt on line, I am kind of mortified that it didn’t go in.” The four-time major champion, who had pointed his putter in the direction of the ball as it headed towards the cup, clutched his drooping head with his left hand when his hopes of a 59 were so cruelly dashed. Mickelson had to settle for a share of the course
record at the TPC Scottsdale - which he already held jointly with Grant Waite and Mark Calcavecchia but grabbed a commanding four-shot lead in the fifth PGA Tour event of the season. “I’m ecstatic to shoot 60,” Mickelson said after piling up 11 birdies with a flawless display of golf in dazzling sunshine. “I am excited and so forth but you don’t get chances to shoot 59 very often. “I could not envision what side of the hole it would have missed on when it was a foot out. But I made a ton of putts, I hit a lot of great shots and I drove it very well.” Winner here in 1996 and 2005, Mickelson birdied seven of his first nine holes to reach the turn in a blistering 29 amid intensifying thoughts of a possible 59. “I was thinking 59 back on my 10th hole,” said the 42-year-old fan favourite, who studied at the nearby Arizona State University. “When I had that front nine, I was thinking of it the whole time.” Mickelson, a 40-time champion on the PGA Tour, picked up further shots at the first, third, fourth and
seventh before his birdie attempt on the ninth green stunningly failed to fall into the cup. “I am walking after it and somehow it moves at the end low and caught the lip,” Mickelson said. “And even at that pace, I think it’s going to lip in. That one - that was heartbreaking.” Harrington, playing in the Phoenix Open for the first time, was delighted with his seven-birdie 64. “It’s a nice score, obviously,” the 41-year-old Dubliner said after hitting 14 of 18 greens in regulation. “It’s a little bit behind Phil but still a nice score in itself. “I pretty much got the most out of the round for the first 15 holes and then had three chances the last three holes and didn’t hole the putts. But overall I’ve got a good feeling about it.” The five players who have shot 59s on the PGA Tour are Americans Al Geiberger (1977 Memphis Classic), Chip Beck (1991 Las Vegas Invitational), David Duval (1999 Bob Hope Classic) and Paul Goydos (2010 John Deere Classic) as well as Australian Stuart Appleby (2010 Greenbrier Classic).

Talented San Francisco roster finally comes of age By Simon Evans
The 49ers’ return to the big time has been credited to head coach Jim Harbaugh (left)
BARELY three years since being derided as a sorry parody of the franchise which once dominated the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers have a chance to claim a recordequalling sixth Super Bowl win tomorrow. It has been 18 years since the 49ers last appeared in a Super Bowl - their fifth victory coming against the San Diego Chargers in Miami in 1994 - and in that time the franchise endured some poor seasons. Six straight years of losing records from 2003 tested the patience of even the most loyal of Niners fans but while change was to come, particularly on the coaching side, the franchise resisted the temptation to make it wholesale. “It is really good to see that we didn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater,” chief executive Jed York said yesterday.
Jim Harbaugh, who took over as head coach for the 2011 season, has rightly earned much of the credit for the transformation but York notes that plenty of things were in place before he arrived from Stanford University. Certainly the playing talent has been in place for some time - running back Frank Gore was drafted in 2005, tight end Vernon Davis a year later and then linebacker Patrick Willis and offensive takle Joe Staley in 2007. There is no doubt either, however, that the appointment of Harbaugh was the crucial decision. “The coaching change was number one,” defensive end Justin Smith told Reuters. “We were able to get a lot of really high draft picks over the years, through really bad records unfortunately, and all that just accumulated into this roster and staff. “They went out and got the best staff they could and it all came together.”
The impact that Harbaugh had his team made was swift - a team which had finished third in the NFC West with a 6-10 record in 2010 won the division and went all the way to the NFC Championship. Now Harbaugh’s Niners have a chance to add their names to the famous wins of the past - the Super Bowl triumphs with quarterback Joe Montana and later Steve Young. The Pittsburgh Steelers have the most Super Bowl wins, with six triumphs in eight appearances, and the Dallas Cowboys have five wins from eight, but the Niners are the only team to have appeared in multiple Super Bowls and won each of them. York is not interested in historical comparisons. “It is not about competition with the Steelers or trying to get number six. We aren’t trying to compete against the 49ers teams of the past,” he said. “The only team we are playing against is the Ravens.”
A DAY after controversially trading away top scorer Rudy Gay, the Memphis Grizzlies were humbled 106-89 at Oklahoma City as the Thunder stayed firmly in the hunt to be best in the west. In a battle of NBA title contenders from the Western Conference, the second-best Thunder improved to 35-11 with the rout, while questions about whether the fourth-placed Grizzlies can contend without Gay will remain as they fell to 29-16. Gay was shipped to Toronto as part of a multiplayer and team trade on Wednesday to save Memphis money and avoid the payment of luxury taxes but it could dampen the team’s playoff hopes. Their cause as further undermined as they were also without trade acquisitions Tayshaun Prince, Austin Daye and Ed Davis, who are yet to arrive and pass physicals. Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 27 points while an emotional Russell Westbrook contributed 21 despite spending time in the locker-room cooling off after a disagreement with team mate Thabo Sefolosha. “Throughout the game you’re going to have some ups and downs and Russell is so emotional, he wants to win so bad, he wants to give it all for our team,” Durant said.
Schild back on her skis SLALOM world champion Marlies Schild, who tore knee ligaments six weeks ago, is back on skis and plans to make a late decision on whether to defend her crown at next month’s Alpine ski world championships in Schladming. “I made my first steps on snow in the last few days. The result is that the knee holds up well and I feel safe on it,” Schild said. The world championships open on Tuesday, with the women’s slalom taking place on February 16. Schild tore right knee ligaments in training for the Are World Cup slalom on December 20 and her chances of defending her world title looked slim but the Austrian Ski Team said her recovery had been much quicker than anticipated.

Double world champion Fernando Alonso poses with the new Prancing Horse at the team’s Maranello factory yesterday
Ferrari turn beast into a beauty Italian glamour team sets sights on winning start to Formula 1 season By Alan Baldwin GLAMOUR team Ferrari took the wraps off their new F138 Formula One car yesterday and set their sights on a winning start to the season after turning last year’s beast into a beauty. The broken, stepped nose that drew shocked gasps when unveiled last season - with some saying it was the ugliest Ferrari yet - was smoothed over with a more aesthetically-pleasing flowing front. Looking fast and racing fast do not always go together, and even ugly cars are loved
when they become winners, but the signs were at least more promising ahead of the first test of the season in Jerez next week. “It is more beautiful,” agreed team principal Stefano Domenicali after the wraps came off at the Maranello factory. Ferrari were painfully off the pace at the start of 2012 but their reliability and the prowess of Fernando Alonso kept them in the chase with the Spaniard fighting for the title all the way to the wire in Brazil. The double world champion, denied a third crown by Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel,
told reporters that the Italian team could not afford to make the same mistake. “There will be three teams who win all the races and we have to be one of those,” said Alonso, who will miss the Jerez test to give himself more time to prepare physically and mentally for the battle to come.
SEVEN WINNERS Last year saw seven winners in the first seven races, with six different teams triumphant over the season, but Alonso said that would not happen again. “I think it was a one-off
as a result of the regulation changes,” he said. “Now, with things a bit more stabilised, we saw at the end of the (2012) season the top teams emerge and so I think it will be highly unlikely we will have seven races and seven winners.” Champions Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren were the top three teams last year, with McLaren winning the final race in Brazil. The Ferrari’s 138 designation derives from the year and the V8 engine, which will be replaced in Formula One by a turbocharged V6 in 2014 after eight seasons of use.
Domenicali said the team, who are now using the Toyota wind tunnel in Cologne while the Maranello one is redesigned, had changed procedures to ensure they made the best start possible. “Unfortunately in recent years we have at the beginning of the winter unfortunately not been able to be right on top of what we are doing,” said the Italian. “We have already forgotten those things which left us with regret last year and we have started improving on the positive aspects of 2012, such as reliability and strategy during the races.”
Ireland out to set record straight By Duncan Bech
Sean O’Brien’s Ireland side are smarting at having lost their last three meetings against Grand Slam champs Wales
SEAN O’Brien has urged Ireland to heal the hurt inflicted by Wales when they renew their Celtic rivalry in today’s RBS 6 Nations opener in Cardiff. The Irish are smarting at having lost their last three meetings against the Grand Slam champions, the most high profile of which was the 2011 World Cup quarter-final defeat in Wellington. That clash sandwiched two controversial Six Nations games that left Ireland nursing a sense or grievance that continues to fester. “Wales has become a championship-defining match. You can’t win a Grand Slam on the first day, but you can lose one if you don’t make a good start,” O’Brien said. “There’s a bit of hurt on our part after losing the last three and we want to put that right. “Things didn’t go our way last year, which was unfortunate because we played so well at times during the game.
“But we didn’t play for the full 80 minutes, which is what we’re looking to do this time. “Wales may have lost seven in a row, but I don’t think they’ll be nervous at all. “It’s obviously a massive game for us. Wales are very tough opposition. The setpiece and breakdown will be massive.” Ireland’s build-up to the game began with headlines over fly-half Jonathan Sexton’s departure for France at the end of the season. Sexton will be the nation’s first Test star to head for the Top 14 and his Leinster teammate O’Brien, who has been restored to Ireland’s back row after missing the autumn with a hip injury, will listen to similar offers when his contract with the Irish Rugby Football Union expires next year. “It’s Jonny’s decision and I’d back him wherever he goes. He’s a good friend who has done a lot for Leinster since being in the academy,” he said. “We’re a big club. People come and go and I’m sure it will happen again at some
stage. “I don’t think there are too many lads who will follow suit. People are happy where they are at the moment as the provinces are doing well. “The IRFU look after players pretty well and that’s a factor in any decision. “When the time comes if clubs are after you, you’re going to take into consideration what’s on offer. “You’ve only so long in the game and you have to look after yourself. They’re tough decisions to make, but you live and die by them.” Wales interim coach Rob Howley meanwhile has packed the champions’ side with experienced players and handed a debut to lock Andrew Coombs for the start of their title defence. “As a squad we have worked hard over the past two weeks and go into Saturday excited and confident at defending our title. The Six Nations is all about momentum and we know we have to hit the ground running against Ireland,” added the former scrumhalf.
PACEMAN Mitchell Starc helped consign West Indies to their third lowest total in one-day internationals as Australia’s top order needed less than 10 overs to race to a nine-wicket victory at the WACA yesterday. Man-of-the-match Starc captured five wickets for 20 and burly quick Clint McKay returned figures of 3-10 as the tourists were skittled for 70, having won the toss and elected to bat first on a baking hot day. Australia’s response was short and brutal with opener Glenn Maxwell blasting an unbeaten 51 and Usman Khawaja finishing on eight not out after pushing the winning single to wrap up victory in the opener of the five-match series. “I was given a job to do and i just went out and did it,” Maxwell said in a television interview after his swashbuckling knock of nine fours and two sixes. “Was glad to get the boys across the line.” Aaron Finch was the only Australian wicket to fall, caught behind for 10 off the bowling of Jason Holder. Starc took full advantage of some devilish bounce and movement to rout the tourists’ top order with four wickets in eight balls and wrapped up the innings in less than 24 overs with his fifth. “It’s nice when things come together and you get on a bit of a roll,” Starc said. “It’s nice when it swings, I tried to keep it nice and smooth. There was enough in the deck, we knew if we put the ball in the right place, we’d get something out of it.” Reduced to 39-7 at the drinks break, the tourists flirted with their all-time lowest one-day total of 54 but captain Darren Sammy combined with paceman Jason Holder for a 26-run partnership to avert the humiliation. As it was, they slumped to their lowest one-day total against Australia. “We didn’t react properly to the swing and the seam,” admitted Sammy. McKay triggered the West Indies collapse in the fifth over when he removed Chris Gayle for 11, the dangerous opener nicking to the slips where Finch dived to his right to complete a sharp catch. Kieran Powell was out for 11 three balls later when Starc had the other opener edge one straight to captain Michael Clarke at first slip. Number three batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan was out for a duck three balls later, bowled by Starc through the gate with a vicious inswinger that smashed into middle stump.

Sport Realists Dortmund eye second in Bundesliga By Karolos Grohmann
All smiles: Mario Balotelli shakes hands with MIlan Vice President Adriano Galliani as he arrives in the city from Manchester
Balotelli to force Milan reshuffle By Brian Homewood MARIO Balotelli’s arrival will force AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri to reshuffle his side just as they seemed to be getting into their stride and adapting to life without big-name players. After a miserable start to the season, Milan, who host Udinese on Sunday, have bounced back to win seven of their last nine league games and climb to fifth in Serie A, giving them hope of challenging for a Champions League place. Milan supporters gave Balotelli a rapturous reception when he arrived in the city on Wednesday and one policeman was reported injured as more than 1,000 fans mobbed
Allegri needs to fit maverick into his team the striker outside the restaurant where he had dinner with club directors. But amid the euphoria and chaos, there is a risk that the wildly unpredictable striker could disrupt, rather than improve, a team who has started to gel. His signing also represents a dramatic U-turn by club president Silvio Berlusconi, who earlier this month likened Balotelli to a ‘rotten apple’ and said the club would not sign him. “I have formed my opinion of Mario Balotelli as a man and I would never accept him in the changing room,” said
the former Italian Prime Minister. “At all clubs and especially here at Milan, the personality of a player is very important and if there is a rotten apple in the changing room, it will affect the others.” Yet on Wednesday, Berlusconi’s chief executive Adriano Galliani was singing a different tune. “I have always dreamed about presenting Mario Balotelli,” said Galliani after Balotelli arrived at Milan in a private jet on Wednesday. “Mario’s arrival has greatly strengthened our team and we are very happy. We have
worked really hard for this.” Balotelli, who played at neighbours Inter before moving to Manchester City, said it had also been a lifelong dream. “I’ve been wanting to play for Milan for a long time but hadn’t been able to until now,” he said. Balotelli’s arrival presents the biggest challenge so far for the unflappable Allegri, who has so far proved highly adept in dealing with players regarded as troublesome, such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho. At the end of last season, Ibrahimovic and defender Thia-
go Silva led a queue of players through the exit door as Milan decided that the priority would be to put the club on a firmer financial footing. With the team under less pressure to deliver titles, Allegri seemed to be enjoying the challenge of rebuilding the side with players such as teenager M’Baye Niang and 20-year-old Stephan El Shaaraway, who had exceeded expectations and is Serie A’s second leading scorer with 15 goals. Leaders Juventus, who will have coach Antonio Conte serving the first of a twomatch touchline ban, are away to mid-table Chievo in the Sunday mid-day match while second-placed Napoli host Catania on Saturday evening.
Atletico hoping for Falcao return By Iain Rogers
Hotshot: Radamel Falcao has netted just under half (18) of Atletico Madrid’s 42 goals this season
WITH city rivals Real breathing down their necks, second-placed Atletico Madrid are desperate to get top scorer Radamel Falcao back from injury for Sunday’s La Liga game at home to Real Betis. Colombia striker Falcao, who has netted just under half (18) of Atletico’s 42 goals this season, has been sidelined since damaging a thigh muscle in the 2-0 win at home to Levante on January 20 and was absent when his side crashed to a 3-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao last weekend. Coach Diego Simeone said on Wednesday that Falcao would miss out on Atletico’s King’s Cup semi-final first leg at home to Sevilla on Thursday - which they won 2-1 - adding that he would not rush his leading player back into action too quickly. “Falcao is to us what Cristiano (Ronaldo) is to Ma-
drid and (Lionel) Messi is to Barcelona,” Simeone told a news conference. “I want players of his quality when they are fit and not before,” added the Argentine. Champions Real, whose hopes of a second consecutive title are all but over after they slipped 15 points behind leaders Barcelona, can close to within a point of Atletico with a win at Granada on Saturday (11pm). Barca play at Valencia on Sunday when Messi, who hit four past Osasuna last weekend, will be looking to add to his impressive tally of 33 goals in 21 games this season, 11 more than secondhighest scorer Ronaldo. Jose Mourinho’s Real side warmed up for the Granada match with a battling 1-1 draw at home to Barca in their Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday. New goalkeeper Diego Lopez, signed from Sevilla as cover for the injured Iker Casillas, put in a solid performance on his debut that
suggested he will be a safe guardian during the two to three months captain Casillas is out after breaking a bone in his hand. “I have found a very united and strong dressing room,” Lopez, a product of Real’s youth academy, told reporters. “I missed the atmosphere of the stadium, arriving in the team bus, and then to play this game against Barcelona, I couldn’t be happier.” The Real game will be a baptism of fire for Granada coach Lucas Alcaraz, appointed by the struggling Andalusian club on Wednesday to replace the sacked Juan Antonio Anquela and help the club avoid the drop to the second division. Granada, who completed the signing of Argentine midfielder Diego Buonanotte on Thursday and have also taken forward Nolito on loan from Benfica until the end of the season, are one place above the relegation zone in 17th.
CHAMPIONS Borussia Dortmund have set their eyes firmly on the Bundesliga’s second place and they could take it from Bayer Leverkusen with a win at their rivals on Sunday. Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp has laughed off suggestions that his team, in third place on 36 points, could still catch leaders Bayern Munich, who are 12 points away, but said securing second spot and a Champions League ticket next season was their primary goal. Leverkusen are a point ahead of Dortmund in second place. “Dortmund, champions this year, that is ridiculous,” Klopp said this week. “But our goal is to catch Leverkusen and finish the season in second place.” “We need to get 51 points, the maximum remaining from 17 games, and Bayern are 12 points ahead which means they would need a maximum of 39 points. Is that realistic?” he said of Dortmund’s title chances. The champions had also talked down their chances in their two back-to-back title-winning seasons but realist Klopp knows the second-place target is well within their reach, especially against a team he has lost to only once in nine league encounters since taking over Dortmund in 2008. Klopp should have defender Marcel Schmelzer fit for the game while crowd favourite Nuri Sahin, back after spells at Real Madrid and Liverpool, could make his first start for the club after playing in a mid-week friendly against Cologne. Leverkusen, however, will not surrender their slim lead without a fight, being the only Bundesliga team this season unbeaten at home. A goalless draw at Freiburg last week cut their gap with Dortmund to one point but Leverkusen are not piling on the sort of pressure that has caused them to fold in past seasons. “I would not rate the importance of this game too high,” said Leverkusen captain Simon Rolfes. “We will indeed measure ourselves on the highest level but there are only three points to give out against a direct rival. “We are going into the game with a lot of confidence and at this level it may be details that will decide the game. We have to keep the pressure up against them throughout the game.” When the two sides face each other on Sunday, Bayern could have already extended their lead over Leverkusen to 14 points if they beat Mainz on Saturday.

PSG look to be the perfect match for ‘brand Beckham’ ‘He has heritage and a track record’
By Nemanja Bjedov
By Keith Weir DAVID Beckham’s move to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will give a huge boost to the French club’s profile while ensuring that the former England football captain remains in the public eye. Beckham, 37, has been looking for a new team since leaving LA Galaxy in December and moving back to his home city of London with his family. Qatari-backed PSG look the ideal destination for his last hurrah as a player. The only professional club in Paris, PSG are long on cash and ambition. Founded in 1970, they lack the history that has helped Beckham’s former clubs Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan to develop global followings. “They do need some kind of substance to their aspirations,” said Simon Chadwick, professor of sport business strategy at England’s Coventry University. “Beckham is a footballing aristocrat. He has heritage and a track record,” he added, saying that Beckham’s affable personality would help to draw fans and sponsors to the club. France lags behind leagues in other major European nations in terms of revenue
APOEL and Omonia turn focus to on-pitch matters
Qatari-backed PSG look the ideal destination for 37-year-old David Beckham’s last hurrah as a player but the arrival of Beckham should help to promote the domestic game in the run-up to the 2016 European championship which the French will host. “Sponsors are still keen to be associated with David Beckham,” said Adam Bull, senior consultant with the sports business group at Deloitte. “It’s the same case as when he went to LA Galaxy. The status of MLS (Major League Soccer) was enhanced by Beckham and it will be the same for Ligue 1,” he added. Beckham placed eighth on the Forbes list of highest-
earning athletes last year, raking in $46 million, most of which came from endorsements. The Beckham brand is a family affair, with his wife Victoria matching his celebrity after swapping pop for fashion design, and one of their sons recently modelling for Burberry. Beckham’s commercial deals draw both on his looks and his reputation as a family man. That versatility enables him to pose as an underwear model for fashion group H&M and act as an ambassador for supermarket group
Sainsbury’s efforts to get more children doing sport. “For David Beckham, it extends the life of his brand further. Just when you thought it was over, it carries on going,” said Chadwick. Beckham has had a long relationship with Adidas. He signed his first contract with the German sportswear company in 1996 when he was beginning to make a name for himself at Manchester United. “As a long term sponsor of David Beckham we would like to congratulate him on his move to Paris SaintGermain. We look forward to
continuing working with him in the future,” Adidas said in a statement. Beckham’s critics argue that he is more style than substance, his image helping him to win more publicity than his footballing abilities now merit. However, those who have worked with him have praised his professionalism and desire for the game. AC Milan director Umberto Gandini welcomed the move to the French capital. “Great player and great person, he deserves it. Bonne chance!” he said on the Twitter social media site.
Crisis and new rules force clubs to sober up in January By Keith Weir
QPR invested heavily in an attempt to remain in the top flight, buying defender Christopher Samba for £12 million
EUROPE’S economic crisis and new financial rules have finally forced many clubs to do their sums before rushing into football’s version of the January sales. England’s Premier League, set for a fresh windfall from television deals this year, has once again led spending in the month-long transfer window which closed on Thursday. Queens Park Rangers and Newcastle United both invested heavily in an attempt to remain in the top flight, while US-owned Liverpool also splashed out after a lacklustre first half of the season. At the other end of the scale, Spanish clubs spent very little. That is a consequence of the financial problems many of them face in a country stuck in recession and where Real Madrid and Barcelona take the lion’s share of TV revenues. Premier League clubs spent £120 million over the month, according to business services group Deloitte, down from a peak of £225 million two years ago. Italian clubs were the second highest spenders, Deloitte said, paying out around 70 percent of the Premier League total. Top division clubs in France and Germany spent less than half as much as their English counterparts.
Top teams also now have to contend with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules which mean clubs have to move towards breakeven or risk exclusion from European competition. “There is this double effect of Financial Fair Play and also the financial markets which have made the financing of clubs a bit more complicated,” said Emmanuel Hembert of management consultancy A.T. Kearney. “Some clubs are willing to take lower transfer fees just to get lower salary bills because profitability is now key.” UEFA President Michel Platini and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger have both criticised the window as distorting competition by allowing teams to make wholesale changes to squads. Some managers are also wary of trying to integrate new players into their ranks in the middle of a season. League leaders Manchester United spent a reported 15 million pounds to buy 20-year-old winger Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace but loaned him back to the second-tier club until the end of the season. Dutchman Wesley Sneijder moved to Galatasaray in Turkey after a dispute with Inter Milan. He will be joined in Istanbul by Didier Drogba, a sign of the growing financial clout of the Turkish club, who are in the last 16 of theChampions League.
FIVE matches are scheduled for this afternoon in Round 20 of the national football championship with Omonia visiting Enosis in Paralimni and APOEL hosting Nea Salamina behind closed doors, with both games kicking off at 6pm. “It is a match as difficult as any other. They have strengthened their squad during this transfer window and what will make it even more difficult for us is the absence of our fans,” said APOEL coach Ivan Jovanovic. “However, we need to win. Our goals this season are different to the ones of our opponent, but we respect them. We want to win this match and will do everything we can in order to do so,” added Jovanovic, whose side has been penalised by the Cyprus Football Association for recent crowd trouble. Jovanovic will be without Selim Benachour and Efstathios Aloneftis, who are both injured, while Dionisis Chiotis has still not recovered from an injury sustained against AEL in the cup, so Urko Pardo is likely to continue in goal. Although initially feared to be out for the season after breaking his left leg last weekend, Aldo Adorno might return in eight to ten weeks according to Jovanovic. “In the first six weeks he will not be able to train with the team. From the next week we will start with some exercises that will speed up his recovery. After the sixth week we will begin the countdown to his return, which is why the doctors estimated eight to ten weeks in the first place.” Omonia visit Enosis Neon Paralimni just two days after the Cyprus Football Association’s Court of Appeal ruled that they have to pay former player Yiannis Okkas €915,000 for a breach of contract after firing the player three years ago. Okkas is now playing for Anorthosis. “In regards to the decision of the Court of Appeal we will have to look into it in great depth. We will pursue all legal procedures available in order to protect the interest of our club,” said an official statement by Omonia. Elsewhere, this afternoon at 5pm, AEP Paphos take on Alki, while Doxa Katokopia host Apollon Limassol, while at AEL face Ayia Napa at the Tsirion Stadium in Limassol at 7pm. Tomorrow afternoon at 5pm, AEK clash with Ethnikos Achnas at the GSZ Stadium in Larnaca, while an hour later unbeaten league leaders Anorthosis face Olympiakos Nicosia at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca.

Sport Lancaster aims to follow All Blacks model By Alex Lowe TWO months after defeating New Zealand, Stuart Lancaster will send England into the RBS 6 Nations with the challenge of emulating the All Blacks. This time last year, Lancaster took charge with English rugby ‘in the gutter’ following the 2011 Rugby World Cup and he made great strides in building a new national team. England enjoyed memorable victories over France, Ireland and New Zealand in 2012 - but the next phase for Lancaster is building consistency and winning trophies. “It is important. To win consistently is important. That is what champion teams do,” Lancaster said. “Expectations have risen and this time last year people were looking at us as an unknown force. Now they know. “The trick is to win consistently, even when you are the target. That is what the All Blacks do. That is what we have to strive towards. “We have to be one step ahead, not one step behind.” It is ten years since England were the trend-setters in world rugby, one step ahead of the game. It is also ten years since they won a Grand Slam. The two are not mutually exclusive and that is key to why Lancaster has been given a much more powerful brief within the Rugby Football Union. Lancaster will now manage the whole England performance programme - including Saxons, age-group teams, women and sevens - as well as coaching the national team. It was only a year ago that Lancaster, a relative unknown outside of Twickenham, was asked to take caretaker charge of the England
team while the RFU sought out a permanent successor for Martin Johnson. Lancaster decided the only way forward was to build a completely new England team, with a new set of values which he wanted to permeate throughout the RFU. It was former England star Graham Rowntree who praised Lancaster for hauling them out of the gutter. Now they are looking at the stars but reaching them can only be done through victories. England are anticipating a dogfight at Twickenham today. Scotland have not won at the stadium in 30 years but England’s last three wins have all been by a converted try or less. In tight encounters such as that, Lancaster talks about players who offer a point of difference being critical. England have lost one in the injured Manu Tuilagi but hope to have found another in Billy Twelvetrees. The England management have long been fans of Twelvetrees, who offered what Gloucester director of rugby Nigel Davies described as a complete package of qualities at inside centre. “I have always wanted ballplayers in the backline, as well as people who can carry as well as pace and physicality,” Lancaster said. “Billy has an opportunity to demonstrate that he has all three. “I have every confidence in him going into the game. “Sometimes opportunities present themselves in different ways,” he added. “We know Manu is going to be fit for next week and we hope Billy puts a marker down this week and gives us another headache.” IRELAND OUT TO SET RECORD STRAIGHT PAGE 29

MISFIRING CHAMPIONS LEFT PLAYING CATCH-UP AGAIN IN TITLE RACE
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini looked on in frustration as his expensively-assembled strike force failed to break down relegation battlers QPR on Wednesday night
Pressure on City as United steam ahead By Toby Davis
A
MIDWEEK slip-up has again left Manchester City needing seven points to draw level with title rivals Manchester United ahead of a weekend encounter with an unpredictable Liverpool side capable of inflicting further pain. A 0-0 stalemate at Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday has left City playing catch-up once again and added extra spice to tomorrow’s encounter at the Etihad Stadium. A defeat and City could find themselves 10 points adrift, deep into the second half of the season when United, who visit Fulham this evening, are traditionally strong. Having won their previous four in the League, Tuesday’s goalless draw was as unpredictable as the behaviour of mercurial striker Mario Balotelli, whose time with City came to an end on Thursday when he joined AC Milan for around £19 million . The Italian’s departure has left the club a striker short, but perhaps with one less problem to deal with as the title race starts to pick up the pace.
