Shiarly: we have nothing to hide Cyprus is ready for any inspection on money laundering, said the minister By Elias Hazou CYPRUS is ready to agree to any probe regarding its compliance with anti-money-laundering regulations, finance minister Vassos Shiarly said yesterday. But to date authorities have received no official request for such an investigation, he added. “We have nothing to hide and we are very clear when it comes to money-laundering issues and to sharing information for tax purposes,” Shiarly said. He was responding to a Financial Times report claiming Cyprus and its EU bailout lenders were in talks to hire outside investigators to probe the island’s banking system for signs of money laundering. The paper cited officials involved in the discussions as saying that Shiarly has “in principle” accepted the idea to allay misgivings from lender states on how committed Cyprus is to fighting money laundering and why the island is a magnet for Russian money. The same officials said also the investigators are likely to come from a foreign consulting or auditing firm. The paper’s sources said the global accounting and advisory group PwC had been mentioned as a possible auditor. But Shiarly clarified yesterday that any inspection would be carried out by an appropriate international organisation, such as the International Monetary Fund or MONEY-
VAL. Should any of these organisations wish to send a mission here in order to compile an updated report on the island’s compliance, Cyprus would have no objection. “We are willing to welcome them anytime, even tomorrow if necessary,” he said. Shiarly revealed also that on Thursday he would be in the Netherlands to brief the parliament there on Cyprus’ request for a bailout but also “on other matters that might concern them, such as money laundering and the exchange of [tax] information.” He is going to the Hague at the invitation of the Dutch parliament. The Netherlands is among the group of EU nations – along with Germany, Austria and Finland – that are making noises about possible money laundering in Cyprus. The issue of money laundering in Cyprus, including the notion of a possible inspection, was raised at the meeting of euro-area finance ministers last Monday. Shiarly told his counterparts that the IMF looked at the issue during a September mission, found that the legal framework was in place, and made recommendations for improvements which were immediately adopted by the government. Shiarly has since stated that the final memorandum for assistance will include a section on money laundering setting out measures

Stabbed man’s dismembered body found stuffed in suitcase POLICE have arrested two people in relation to a gruesome murder of a Bangladeshi man, 25, after his stabbed and dismembered body was found, yesterday morning, stuffed into a suitcase in the boot of a red Honda Civic. The car, belonging to the victim, was in a car park on Eschylou Street, near Plato’s bar, around 150 metres from the flat where he was living. It had been there since Saturday. The victim had bled to death after being stabbed in the neck, state
pathologist Sophoclis Sophocleous said. He reportedly had fingers cut off in one hand, presumably from defending himself, state broadcaster CyBC said. The victim’s flatmate and another person were arrested yesterday evening in relation to the death. Members of Nicosia CID arrived at the scene yesterday morning with two state pathologists, Sophocleous and Nicholas Charalambous, who carried out a post-mortem at the scene.
Police originally received a phone call from a member of public – a Cypriot - informing them of the incident. According to the informant, a Bangladeshi man had told him that in the early hours of Saturday he found his flatmate, dead in his bed. In his panic at finding the body, the flatmate decided to place the 25year-old’s dead body into a suitcase and put it in the boot of the car Some reports suggested neighbours had overheard a furious row in the flat late on Friday night.

Sounding off on Cyprus issue Annan plan is at centre of second TV election debate By Poly Pantelides THE three main contenders for the presidential elections in February 17 yesterday took on the Cyprus problem for the second televised live debate. The scene was set even before the debate started. All three candidates arrived making statements on the 2004 Annan plan and referendum on the proposed solution, overwhelmingly rejected by Greek Cypriots and supported by Turkish Cypriots. Wearing a purple tie and accompanied by AKEL brass, Stavros Malas arrived first at about 8.50pm with CyBC interrupting the sports section of the news. “I’m the only one with clear views (on the Cyprus problem),” he said. EDEK-backed Giorgos Lillikas, who arrived almost immediately afterwards wearing a red tie, said that people had a choice to either validate the Annan plan or make a clean break, a dig at the other candidates who supported a ‘yes’ vote in the referendum. DISY leader Nicos Anastasiades – who must have not checked with Lillikas and also wore a red tie – said he was sad his opponents were living in the past. A faint smile barely broke through as he expressed his rhetorical sadness. Anastasiades is backed by DIKO, which was firmly in the “no” camp in 2004.
The Annan plan was the first question for Anastasiades, but he knew it was coming and reading out from his notes tried to argue that his position had always been one of respect for the wishes of the people. At a later point in the discussion, Anastasiades became frustrated. “I said this in 2005, 2006 and 2008; not now for political expediencies,” referring to his respect for the results of the referendum on the plan. Anastasiades was prepared to attack both Malas and Lillikas, having come prepared with examples of how his opponents had also changed tack over the years. Anastasiades accused Lillikas of being fickle saying his opponent had supported the positions of former UN Secretary-General, Boutros Boutros Ghali, who outlined a bizonal and bicommunal federation during the nineties. Reading out from his notes on Lillikas’ various statements, Anastasiades furrowed his eyebrows and, hands out, declared: “(Lillikas) has a new idea every day!” Lillikas was not fazed, and kept returning back to the fact he never endorsed the “catastrophic Annan plan”. “I’m happy that I was on the side of the Greeks of Cyprus at a crucial time,” he said. Lillikas’ views have been laid out in his 2008 book on the Cyprus problem, he said and
The scene was set before the debate started as all three arrived making statements on the plan (Christos Theodorides) kept challenging his opponents to read it so they could discuss it. Those commenting online as the debate wore on could not resist joking. “Is it sold in kiosks too?” one Twitter user asked ironically. It was the Annan plan as well for Malas who tried to differentiate himself from Anastasiades and stand as a principled man who stuck to his values, as a member of the public in 2004 rather than a politician. Though Malas said he would “under no circumstance accept” the Annan plan today, he came the closest to stating his position as it now stands which entails a strong federation with a central government that secures Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone. The final debate is due on February 11 on the economy and domestic policy.
State of Kuwait Public Authority of Housing Welfare Invitation Pre-Qualifying International Companies To Participate in Tenders Announced by The Public Authority of Housing Welfare (PAHW)
The lows and new lows By Stefanos Evripidou ONE MIGHT be forgiven for not noticing the election campaigns currently underway ahead of next month’s presidential election. This may be one of the most challenging periods in the Cyprus Republic’s short history but the main candidates in the race appear to be adopting a somewhat ‘light’ approach to the campaign, focusing less on solid policy positions and more on taking wild and offkey pot shots at each other. Perhaps focus on the second public debate scheduled for last night between the three main contenders- Nicos Anastasiades, Stavros Malas and Giorgos Lillikas- had something to do with the low-calibre exchanges during the day. The morning started with the EDEK-backed Lillikas camp issuing a press release about the outspoken psychiatrist, TV personality and newspaper columnist Yiangos Mikellides. The good doctor was one of eight people who nominated the DIKO-backed DISY leader Anastasiades as a presidential candidate on January 17. Mikellides was joined on the day by other notables including popular singer Michalis Hadjiyiannis, Nobel laureate Christophoros Pissarides and the Archbishop’s accountant Yiannos Charilaou. Lillikas chose instead to use
eight unemployed people to nominate him for candidate. The 52-year-old former commerce minister, who along with his wife is worth around €4m, wanted to pass on the message that he truly is a man of the people and is not bound by party allegiances. A quick glance at his CV can confirm the latter. So, in yesterday’s not-so-fierce election campaigning, the Lillikas team decided to focus on Mikellides because he has been publishing his musings in a column in Politis newspaper for years, taking a sometimes humorous, sometimes brutal eye to Cypriot society. The Lillikas team decided to select and re-publish excerpts of Mikellides’ columns, some of them dating back to 2006 and pose the question to Anastasiades and his supporter, DIKO leader Marios Garoyian, on whether they agree with what the doctor has written in the last seven years. In one excerpt from December 2009, Mikellides talks about the return of the late Tassos Papadopoulos into public life but this time through his body which was stolen from its tomb and later found. In the column, Mikellides describes the former president as a “master of intrigue”. After the 2008 elections, the columnist said he felt “proud of Cypriot people” for voting Papadopoulos out in the first round of the presidential elections, along with EDEK,
EVROKO and the Greens “and all those with nationalist tendencies which were leading Cyprus to a Kosovoisation and partition”. In 2006, he slammed those Greek Cypriots who voted ‘no’ in the 2004 Annan plan referendum to protect the value of their properties or their jobs or the status quo, saying they were all traitors to their country “because they sold half of Cyprus to the Turks”. The Lillikas camp asked the two party leaders to state clearly whether they agree with Mikellides’ views since they chose to include him in the list of eight nominees. “Is that how they show respect to DIKO members?” asked the Lillikas team. For its part, AKEL- which has put its weight behind Malas- focused on a memorial over the weekend of general Giorgos Grivas, who has been associated with extreme rightwing elements in Cyprus’ history, and whose main aim was to replace Cyprus’ new-found independence after 1960 with union with Greece. Giorgos Loucaides, AKEL spokesman, said the presence of many DISY representatives at the memorial to honour the founder of EOKA B was insulting and provocative. Malas’ spokesman, Takis Hadjigeorgiou, found it interesting that two years ago, Anastasiades had chosen to attend the memorial but this year, he was a no-show.

Home Norway helps in money Medvedev laundering signals battle willingness to help out with loan
‘We have nothing to hide’
NORWAY WILL pay near one million euros to strengthen Cyprus’ antimoney laundering capabilities. A contract was signed last Friday between the Planning Bureau and the Unit for Combating Money Laundering (MOKAS) for the financing of a project aiming to strengthen MOKAS’ capacities and improve its efficiency to detect money laundering and the financing of terrorism. The project will be implemented by MOKAS and cost a total of €1,100,882. Norway will provide the majority of funds, 85 per cent, amounting to €935.750, while MOKAS will provide the remaining €165.132. The main objective of the project is to automate the analysis and investigation procedure of MOKAS by implementing an IT system to support its core activities. This in turn will enhance the capabilities of the Unit making best use of available information and automatic recognition of relationships between data, information and suspects. According to a Planning Bureau press release, enhanced co-operation between law enforcement agencies and information providers is expected to develop policies and tools necessary for the prevention and combating of transnational organised crime, in particular money laundering and terrorist financing. During the project’s implementation, MOKAS’ Norwegian counterpart, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of Norway, will exchange knowledge and best practices in the anti-money laundering and counterterrorism financing area. Members of MOKAS will also make on site visits to the Norwegian FIU, while a memorandum of understanding will be signed by the heads of the two national units as part of enhanced bilateral relations and cooperation.
(continued from front page) that Cyprus must examine, and that this process would be monitored. Asked if he was concerned about the delay in the signing of a bailout deal, something that might plunge the country deeper into recession, Shiarly said the government could meet both its financing and fiscal needs through March. Yesterday he was expecting updated data that would show whether the state could meet its obligations for the month of April as well. The finance minister said Cyprus had held up its side of the bargain with international lenders, having struck a preliminary agreement by late November and then in December passing the relevant laws for the 2013 budget. Any delays in concluding a final agreement, he noted, were down to the “sensibilities” of certain EU countries but also of the IMF. Cyprus’ request for a full bailout has apparently been caught in limbo due to disagreements between EU members. But the indebted island has also had to contend with a discussion on how far Moscow should be involved in a bailout. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev yester-
Vassos Shiarly says to date Cyprus has received no official request for such an investigation, day signalled his country’s willingness to help, under certain conditions. The help could come in the form of an extension to a 5-year €2.5 billion loan Moscow granted Nicosia in 2011. Cyprus said earlier this month it had formally launched a request for a 5-year extension to repay that debt, a step that could take the immediate heat out of Nicosia’s financial woes and that, according to a German government document, euro zone finance ministers support. “We think the main
burden to solve these problems should be taken on by Cyprus and the EU states,” Medvedev told the German business daily Handelsblatt in an interview held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. “But we are not refusing to help under certain conditions. The conditions must be agreed first. Before that, there can be no money from us,” he added. Reuters cited a German government document indicating that eurozone finance ministers supported
the idea of extending the Russian loan. “The government of Cyprus reported in the Eurogroup (meeting last Monday) that it had asked the Russian Federation for an extension of the existing loan by five years,” the document read. “The government of Cyprus has the Eurogroup’s support on this.” Last week, European Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn told Reuters it would only be fair for Russia to share part of the burden over Cyprus.
“I would think that as there is significant economic and financial activity by Russia and especially by Russian citizens and businesses in Cyprus, it would be quite fair that Russia is making a contribution,” Rehn said. “We have had contacts with Russia but of course they take their own decisions in their own way,” he added. Medvedev said it was now important for the European Union to put clear demands to Cyprus. “It would be better if nobody would lose anything. But most of all it is now necessary that the EU formulates its demands clearly on how the Cypriot economy should be cleaned up. Cyprus is more set than countries like Greece.” German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble is not yet convinced it can be seen as a systemic risk, which is a precondition for a bailout. Reuters reported yesterday that according to the German weekly Spiegel magazine the head of the European Central Bank (ECB) Mario Draghi has clashed with Germany’s finance minister over Cyprus, arguing that failure to bail out the island could endanger the wider euro zone. Spiegel, which gave no sources, reported European Economic Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn and the chief of the euro zone’s bailout fund, Klaus Regling, had sided with Draghi against Schaeuble on the issue of aid for Cyprus. “A Cypriot bankruptcy would undo the positive news which has recently led to a calming of the mood in the euro zone,” Spiegel quoted Draghi and his colleagues as telling Schaeuble.
Discussing the ‘nightmare scenario’ for Cyprus By Stefanos Evripidou THE ARCHITECTS of the Greek sovereign debt writedown are in Cyprus to present their positions on the eurozone debt crisis and the option of a possible debt writedown for Cyprus. eurozone debt crisis: the options now, with special reference to Cyprus, tomorrow at the European University Cyprus Delta Auditorium at 11am until 1pm. The two men were described last March by the New York Times (NYT) as the “intellectual fathers of Greece’s intricate bond swap” , noting that it was their joint paper in May 2010 that first proposed a way for Greece to force investors who reject a deal to suffer the same loss as those who agreed. Gulati is Professor of Law at Duke University and was instrumental in highlighting the feasibility of a reduction of Greek debt through swaps, by suggesting that collective ac-
tion clauses allowed enough negotiation room for debtors to come to a deal with their creditors. Buchheit is a partner at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP and visiting professorial fellow in the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at the University of London. He played a leading role in the team of lawyers who managed the new deals between investors and the Greek state and has been vital in providing leverage for indebted countries to compel holdout creditors into deals favourable for the debtor. He has also been involved in debt restructuring deals in numerous countries in Latin America and more recently in

Iraq and Iceland. Last year, he was recognised by the Financial Times as one of the ten most ‘Innovative Individuals of 2012’ for his work on the Greek debt restructuring. According to NYT, both men see themselves as “sovereign debt taboo-busters”. And now both are in Cyprus to talk about what politicians and bankers across the board might consider the ‘nightmare scenario’- a sovereign debt haircut to make Cyprus’ public debt more sustainable post-bailout. The fact that struggling local banks are in possession of a huge share of government bonds makes what they have to say all the more interesting.
Cyprus-based economist Fiona Mullen will also give a presentation after Gulati and Buchheit on who owns Cypriot debt and the repercussions of a Cypriot haircut. Mullen, the director of Sapienta Economics, has been providing detailed reports on the economy of Cyprus for the past decade, and has written extensively about the existing Cypriot debt and the possible repercussions of its renegotiation. Home OXYGEN LEAK AT NICOSIA GENERAL
A liquid oxygen tank leak outside the emergency room at Nicosia General Hospital at around 1pm yesterday causing the area to be cordoned off while the fire service dealt with what could have led to an explosion. According to Fire Service spokeswoman, Lisa Kemidji, one tonne of liquid oxygen leaked from the ten-tonne tanks. Four fire trucks arrived on the scene, closing off the area, with members of the public
asked to avoid using their mobile phones for fear of creating a spark which could have ignited the oxygen. “Water was used to thaw the valves to enable hospital technicians to close them off,” Kemidji said. She said one fire truck remained on the scene for safety reasons. She denied reports that the hospital had been evacuated. No injuries were reported (Christos Theodorides)
CY pilots ‘no’ to revival plan They say they’re willing to contribute but insist restructuring plan will be ineffective By Poly Pantelides PILOTS at ailing state carrier Cyprus Airways (CY) disagreed yesterday with a restructuring proposal, which includes a bigger contribution for their members, on the grounds the plan was not viable. CY’s other unions have agreed to staggered wage cuts starting at 7.0 per cent for up to €1,000 a month and reaching 20.5 per cent for over €6,000 a month. It is understood that the majority of high earners – the pilots- earn closer to €9,000 and €10,000 a month, and that about half of those impacted earn up to €2,500. “We definitely do not have the luxury of time as we’ve said repeatedly. I want to believe and I do believe that we will manage to implement this plan by February 1,” said CY chairman Stavros Stavrou. Stavrou said he was hopeful all unions – including the pilots’ – could reach a compromise. He said CY was still discussing outsourcing the catering, cargo handling, and some other departments, but made it clear the airline would maintain control of engineering and maintenance for safety and security reasons. The unions have said that 272 people would be sacked at a first stage, but Stavrou would
not confirm this. The pilots’ union PASYPI – which has so far dismissed all restructuring proposals – blamed the management for CY’s troubles, but did not make any counterproposals. PASYPI said it was willing to contribute but could not in all conscience agree to an “ineffective” plan. “(The pilots) don’t understand that CY is in danger,” the head of the state carrier’s biggest union SYNIKA Andreas Pierides told CyBC yesterday. Pierides asked the pilots “to take a look at all those people queuing up at unemployment offices and relying on charity”. Cyprus Airways employs about 1,000 people and the restructuring plan, based on proposals by Air France-KLM, has called for the sacking of 407 staff members. CY must also propose a compensation figure for those laid off. The airline has also asked for €73 million to implement the restructuring plan. The House Finance committee begrudgingly made €16.3 million available to CY last month as part of a share capital increase. The state has a stake of almost 70 per cent in the airline. CY has not been able to keep up with competition from cheaper carriers, and with rising fuel costs and has been kept afloat with cash injections in the form of assistance for losses incurred due to a Turkish airspace ban.

AG makes an offer to judges Wage cuts dispute heard at Supreme Court but it will meet again in March By Elias Hazou THE SUPREME Court will reconvene on March 7 to continue hearing the case of the district judges’ appeal, after an offer yesterday by the Attorney-general to broker a deal satisfying both sides. The judges are challenging two items of legislation passed in late 2011 as part of an austerity package that included reductions to the salaries of state officials, among others. They wish to be exempted from the cuts, arguing that their remuneration is protected by the Constitution. The lawyers representing the judges have argued that an unconstitutional law cannot not become constitutional because of the reason it was enacted - in this case the economic difficulties faced by the state. At the hearing last week, the judges reiterated their proposal that, instead of taking a mandatory pay cut, they would make a voluntary contribution from their salary to the state. They said also their
offer would stand irrespective of the court’s ruling. In court yesterday, Attorney-general Petros Clerides – who represents the state against the judges – made a counter-offer. Clerides proposed that in his capacity as Attorneygeneral he would sound out the executive and legislative branches of government, to see whether they would agree to amend the two laws passed in December 2011. The wording of the laws would be amended so that the judges are omitted from the list of state officials subject to the pay cuts. But due to the fact the House plenum is in recess and cannot reconvene until after the presidential elections, Clerides said it would be better if the next hearing in the case was delayed until then. The court agreed and set the date for the next hearing for March 7. Assuming Clerides gets politicians on board to amend the contentious laws, it’s understood the district court judges would then drop their appeal. They would then vol-
CYPRUS TODAY Woman mugged TWO hooded men mugged a woman, taking around €4,100 in cash from her, after she parked her car in the ground floor parking lot of the building she lives in, on Sunday evening, police said. According to reports, at around 8.35pm, having exited her vehicle, the woman was approached by two hooded men who were carrying a knife and had their faces covered. The two culprits approached the woman and without saying a word tookher bag, which contained the daily takings from the shop she owns, and fled the scene.
untarily contribute a part of their income to the state as promised. Though the end-result might be the same, Clerides’ move avoids a legal battle, which would probably suit all involved. A court ruling could directly affect the earnings, pensions and retirement bonuses of the very Supreme Court Judges who are being called to make a decision on the appeal. Conversely, the other way to settle the matter would be amend the Constitution – which no one seems to want to touch. But the catch, the Mail understands, is that Clerides wants a binding commitment from all 90 district judges to make voluntary contributions. He also wants the contributions to be exactly equal to the cuts provided for under the two laws of 2011 as well as subsequent laws to date. That’s unlikely to go down well with the judges; moreover, it’s still not clear whether the voluntary contributions they have proposed would be the equivalent of the total cuts imposed over the previous two years.
Car arson A CAR belonging to a 42-year-old female Greek national was torched on Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the race track in Nicosia, police said. The fire, which caused damage to another car parked close-by, was set off at 5.45pm and extinguished by members of the public according to the police press office. Preliminary investigations carried out by the police indicated it is a case of arson. The car, valued at around €1200 was being used by the 42-year-old’s 45-year-old husband.
Botched robbery
Judges are willing to give a voluntary contribution
A BOTCHED robbery took place yesterday at 7.45am in a shop in Limassol, police said. According to reports, an unknown man entered the shop and began spraying a harmful spray at the shop owner before pushing him to the ground and searching his pockets. The incident was noticed by the owner’s assistant who attempted to help him as the assailant sprayed the assistant before fleeing the scene.

Nearly half of computer owners use pirated software By Stefanos Evripidou FINANCE MINISTER Vassos Shiarly yesterday called on businesses not to use unlicensed or pirated software, arguing that it hurts information technology (IT) businesses, tax revenue and job creation. The Finance Ministry and Business Software Alliance (BSA) held a joint press conference yesterday on the protection of intellectual property (IP) rights of computer software. According to a 2011 study by BSA on global software piracy, 48 per cent of computer users in Cyprus use unlicensed or pirated
software, equating to €14m in losses for software providers. Speaking at the event yesterday, Shiarly said Cyprus was also contributing to the Europe-wide effort to clamp down on software piracy, by informing businesses and the public on the importance of legal use of software in the workplace. “Copying legal work without the consent of the creator, apart from the fact that it discourages creative people who dedicate time and money to research and development, also deprives the state of revenue since this illegality leads to tax evasion, and a reduction in jobs in research and IT,” said Shiarly. In an effort to encourage growth and job creation through research and development, parliament passed an tax amend-
ment law last May, giving incentives to high-tech companies to invest in research and development, such as low tax rates ( up to 2 per cent) and exemptions. Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Ireland and the UK have also adopted similar measures to encourage innovative high-tech companies to stay in Europe and attract others from outside the EU-bloc to set up offices in Europe, thereby increasing investment and jobs. “Our obligation is to protect the intellectual property of these companies so they feel secure in the European market,” said the minister, noting that legal use of software benefited the state, economy and labour market, reducing unemployment and creating growth through research and development.

23-month-old Dani could be helped by three operations carried out in China By Bejay Browne FRIENDS and family of a baby boy from Paphos who has been blind since birth are appealing to the public to help raise funds to go towards his treatment in China. Iordanis Demetrof (Dani) was born to his Bulgarian mother on March 1, 2011. He has since been diagnosed with severe optic disc hypoplasia by a specialist doctor at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Family friend, Nadia Frangeskou, is helping to raise awareness of the baby’s plight and said that numerous fund raising events had already been held in Paphos to raise cash for Dani’s treatment. She said: “Dani’s mother Rafaela, realised that he might have problems with his sight when he was around one or two months old. At this age babies should be able to follow a moving object held in front of them, but he couldn’t do that.” The baby underwent numerous tests at a specialist ophthalmic eye centre in Limassol, where it was discovered that he was unable to ‘fix or follow’, nor did he have any response to bright light and he also had roving eye movements – more tests followed. According to documents, these took place at Great Ormond Street Hospital in Londonwhich specialises in treating sick children. Dr Alki Liasis, consultant electro-physiologist at the hospital, tested Dani’s eyesight
and responses in November 2011. He remained awake during the tests, but unresponsive to visual stimulation. He was diagnosed with severe optic disc hypoplasia- which means he is blind. According to Frangeskou, the family searched for treatment which could help Dani to improve his sight. They discovered a number of families in Greece and other countries who had taken their children to China for treatment, which had worked to varying degrees. “They have enough money for the first treatment which will cost around €30,000 each time. Dani will need three sessions for any real chance of being able to see,” she said. According to the family friend, the first treatment should help the baby a little, with such things as Dani’s reaction to light. He is due to undergo this at a specialist clinic in China in March. “After the second, there will be a marked improvement and after the third we hope he will be able to see and lead a normal life.” According to Frangeskou, each bout of treatment will take around three to four weeks to complete. The family still needs to raise funds for airfare, accommodation and the final two treatments. Frangeskou added: “Dani is such a sweet happy boy and his family wants to do everything they can to help him have a proper start in life.” Donations can be made at Laiki Bank - Account number 350 00 305846.

BUILDERS continued their islandwide, indefinite strike yesterday with no apparent end in sight as trade unions SEK, PEO and DEOK have threatened that measures may escalate. In a statement released yesterday, PEO gave its full support to the builders in their fight against their employers. “For a long time, employers in the construction industry in Cyprus, citing the crisis and difficulties in the industry, have started an attack on the working class. They have systematically dismissed large numbers of workers and replaced them with cheap labour, increasing unemployment and the impoverishment of the families of thousands of workers,” the statement said. The builders have organised demonstrations for today after the decision to continue their strike was made yesterday during meetings across Cyprus. They criticised their employers for taking advantage of cheap foreign workers, essentially taking the industry back ten years and destroying the trade union movement. The central council of the Building Contractors’ Association in Cyprus will meet today to consider a proposal from the Labour Ministry.

Britain UK mulls ways to curb immigration
BRITAIN TODAY Kate hoax call radio show cancelled THE Australian radio show that aired a prank call involving the hospital that treated the Duchess of Cambridge has been cancelled, according to reports. The Hot 30 programme broadcast the hoax telephone call made by its two presenters who posed as the Queen and Prince of Wales last month. Nurse Jacintha Saldanha transferred the DJs from 2Day FM to a colleague, who then described in detail the condition of Kate, who was being treated at the time for a rare form of pregnancy sickness. Saldanha, a mother-oftwo who worked at the private King Edward VII’s hospital in central London, was found hanged a few days after the incident. Southern Cross Austereo, the parent company of 2Day FM, reportedly made the announcement about the show’s end on the Hot 30’s Facebook page which directed listeners to its replacement called The Bump. Rhys Holleran, chief executive of Southern Cross Austereo, said the show’s hosts, Michael Christian and Mel Greig, who have been on leave since the nurse’s death, would return at a later date.
Animal language ‘top mystery’ WHETHER animals have language is the nature mystery people most want solved, according to a poll released yesterday. Asked to choose from 10 unanswered questions about the natural world, almost a third (31 per cent) said whether animals use language was one of the issues they most wanted answered. The second most burning question was over how the dinosaurs died out, with 29 per cent of the 2,000 people polled putting that as one of their top queries. And more than a fifth (22 per cent) wanted to know why cats purr. The poll for the launch of new TV show David Attenborough’s Natural Curiosities on UKTV’s Eden HD channel also revealed some of the most commonly believed myths about nature.
Britain said yesterday it was looking at ways of curbing immigration before the European Union eases work and travel rules for Romanian and Bulgarian citizens
BRITAIN said yesterday it was looking at ways of curbing immigration before the European Union eases work and travel rules for Romanian and Bulgarian citizens. The lifting of the restrictions has triggered warnings of “hordes” of immigrants and a “flood” of new arrivals in Britain’s right-leaning media, riding a wave of euroscepticism as the economy falters and public resources are squeezed. That piles pressure on Britain’s ruling Conservative Party ahead of polls in 2015, in which the increasingly popular UK Independence Party - which has pledged to end “mass, uncontrolled immigration” - could split the rightist vote. EU membership allows citizens of the 27member bloc to work and travel anywhere within its borders. Rules governing Bulgarians and Romanians are set to ease by the end of this year, allowing unrestricted access to the EU in 2014. “The issue here is around dealing with potential damage to the UK’s labour market and
potential scope for curbing immigration to that end,” Prime Minister David Cameron’s spokesman told reporters. “We’re in the process of considering what we may be able to do. Clearly there is a European legal framework within which we have to operate. Clearly there may be some areas where we may want to cooperate with other member states,” he said. Immigration is a sensitive issue in Britain, where many eastern Europeans, including Poles, Hungarians and Czechs, have come to work following their countries’ accession to the EU. An opinion poll this month showed that Britons see immigration as the biggest issue facing society. A poll last year found the number of immigrants to be the “worst thing” about Britain. While Britain’s economy is anaemic, it is faring better than that of many other EU members caught in the eurozone debt crisis, and its use of one of the world’s most widely-spoken languages also makes it an attractive destination for migrants.
Government ploughs on with high-speed rail link Contested rail link will stimulate economy Osborne By Rhys Jones BRITAIN’S government pressed ahead yesterday with a planned high-speed rail link that is opposed by many of its own lawmakers, striving to show it is committed to projects that will revitalise a moribund economy. The route for the second phase of the $50 billion HS2 rail project will run between Birmingham in central England and Leeds in the north, slashing journey times to London by almost a half, the Department for Transport (DfT) said. A year ago the rail plan was threatened by a backlash from rural communities and lawmakers within David Cameron’s own Conservative Party, who argue the scheme’s economic benefits will be limited. Nonetheless, the government launched the next stage of the scheme yesterday, saying it would create thousands of jobs, bring growth to regions outside London as well as adding capacity to an alreadystretched rail network. “It’s not just about cutting journey times. It’s also about the new stations, the prosperity that’s going to come, the
Chancellor of the Exchequer Osborne tours train wheel manufacturers Lucchini UK, at Trafford Park, Manchester jobs that are going to be created around this infrastructure,” Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne told BBC TV. “This is going to help our country over the next 15, 20 years. If we don’t take the decision now it will be left to someone else in 20 years’ time to take those tough decisions to invest in our future.” Figures released last week showed the economy shrank at the end of 2012, pushing it close to a “triple-dip” reces-
sion and raising questions about the Conservative-led coalition’s austerity programme which critics say is strangling growth. Just before the release of the numbers, the leader of the ruling coalition’s junior partner, the Liberal Democrats, said major infrastructure investment was one area where the government may have cut spending too deeply. The DfT said the HS2 route, which will not be in operation
for 20 years, will run northwards from Birmingham, stopping at Manchester, Manchester airport, Toton in the East Midlands as well as Sheffield and Leeds in the northern county of Yorkshire. The ministry also put plans for a link between the line and London’s Heathrow airport on hold until the completion of a review into the future of Britain’s airports, hinting senior government figures do not see Ferrovial’s Heathrow as
the best location for a future London hub. The ministry said HS2 would create around 100,000 jobs, but the project is likely to anger rural communities through which the line will run, and their MPs. Cameron’s Conservatives trail Labour by around 10 points ahead of elections due in May 2015, and he also faces a challenge from the UK Independence Party in the party’s southern England heartlands.
UK grandmother, sentenced to death by firing squad in Bali, will appeal A BRITISH grandmother sentenced to death by firing squad for smuggling cocaine into Bali has notified Indonesian officials she intends to appeal against the ruling. Lindsay Sandiford, 56, from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, was convicted last week of taking 10.6lb
(4.8kg) of the drug into the country. She was accused by the court of damaging the image of Bali and received the sentence despite prosecutors only asking for a 15-year jail term. A court official confirmed his office had received the appeal request
through the head of Kerobokan Penitentiary where Sandiford is being held. Earlier yesterday it was announced the British government is to be challenged over its failure to fund legal representation for Sandiford, who it is thought cannot afford legal repre-
sentation for the appeal. Law firm Leigh Day, which is working with the charity Reprieve, said it would cost around £2,500 to pay for an adequate lawyer to take on her case, but the Government will not pay. The firm said Sandiford, originally
from Redcar, Teesside, had not been properly represented since her arrest at Bali airport in May last year, and that it is seeking a judicial review of the Government’s decision not to pay her £2,500 legal expenses. A hearing at the High Court in London will be held before Thursday.

aiming to Timbuktu sealed off as Comic exorcise Italy’s militants torch library ‘walking dead’ French special forces surround city, no rebel resistance By Adama Diarra FRENCH and Malian troops yesterday sealed off Timbuktu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, after fleeing Islamist rebel fighters torched several buildings in the ancient Saharan trading town, including a priceless manuscript library. Without a shot being fired to stop them, 1,000 French soldiers including paratroopers and 200 Malian troops seized the airport and surrounded the centuries-old Niger River city, looking to block the escape of al Qaedaallied fighters. The retaking of Timbuktu followed the swift capture by French and Malian forces at the weekend of Gao, another major northern Malian town which had also been occupied by the alliance of Islamist militant groups since last year. A two-week intervention by France in its former Sahel colony, at the request of Mali’s government but also with wide international backing, has driven the Islamist rebel fighters northwards out of towns into the desert and mountains. A French military spokesman said the assault forces at Timbuktu were being careful to avoid combat inside the city so as not to damage cultural treasures and mosques and religious shrines in what is considered a seat of Islamic learning. But Timbuktu’s mayor, Ousmane Halle, reported that fleeing Islamist fighters had torched a South Africanfunded library in the city containing thousands of priceless manuscripts. “The rebels set fire to the newly-constructed Ahmed Baba Institute built by the South Africans ... this hap-
A French Gazelle military helicopter, flying back from the city of Timbuktu, lands at the French army base camp airport yesterday in Sevare (AFP) pened four days ago,” Halle Ousmane told Reuters by telephone from Bamako. He said he had received the information from his chief of communications who had travelled south from the city a day ago. Ousmane was not able to immediately say how much the concrete building had been damaged. He added the rebels also torched his office and the home of a member of parliament.
The Ahmed Baba Institute, one of several libraries and collections in the city containing fragile ancient documents dating back to the 13th century, is named after a Timbuktuborn contemporary of William Shakespeare and houses more than 20,000 scholarly manuscripts. Some were stored in underground vaults. The French and Malians have faced no resistance so far at Timbuktu, but they face a
Ballet director forgives attackers THE artistic director of Russia’s Bolshoi Ballet says the attackers who splashed acid in his face were probably driven by ambition or resentment but that he has forgiven them. His head shaven and a bandage around his neck, Sergei Filin told a Russian TV station from his hospital room he was determined to return to work despite his injuries. Filin, 42, suffered severe burns during the attack sustained on his way home from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow late on January 18. Doctors have performed two operations on each eye and hope to save his sight. “I am not going to lie. Of course it is very hard for me and very difficult,” Filin said in grainy footage in a video-link with NTV television late on Sunday. “I tell myself every morning when I wake up: ‘Sergei, you are healthy, everything is in its place - your arms, your legs’. And I will do eve-
rything to go back to being the same Sergei I was before.” Filin did not wear the thick bandages that had swathed his head and face in mobile phone footage taken the day after the attack, but his eyes were half-closed and it was unclear whether he could see. Filin’s job gave him the power to make or break careers at the ballet, which is an enduring symbol of Russian culture. He said after the attack that he had been receiving threats. “A priest came to me, and I told him: ‘You know, I forgive everyone, and God will be their judge. Because people are weak’,” he said. “I forgive all the people who are involved in this.” He said he did not know who was behind the attack but made clear he believed that the asssault was related to his professional work.
Dutch Queen Beatrix’s hastily announced abdication address DUTCH Queen Beatrix, who is set to turn 75 on Thursday, announced her abdication in favour of her son, Prince Willem-Alexander, in a hastily announced broadcast to the nation yesterday evening. The monarch said the prince would become king on January 30.
Queen Beatrix became the sixth monarch of the House of Orange in 1980 following the abdication of her mother, Queen Juliana, who reigned for 31 years. Juliana was 73 years old and in deteriorating mental health when she abdicated but Beatrix has remained
active and in good health, despite some personal setbacks. The queen was emotionally shaken when a man drove his car into a Queen’s Day procession in 2009. Her middle son, Prince Johan Friso, has been in a coma ever since he was buried in an avalanche while skiing last year.
tough job of combing through the labyrinth of ancient mosques and monuments and mud-brick homes between alleys to flush out any hiding Islamist fighters. “We have to be extremely careful. But in general terms, the necessary elements are in place to take control,” French army spokesman Lieutenant Thierry Burkhard said in Paris. Timbuktu member of parliament El Hadj Baba Haïdara told Reuters in Bamako the Islamist rebels had abandoned the city. “They all fled. Before their departure they destroyed some buildings, including private homes,” he said. The United States and European Union are backing the French-led Mali operation as a strike against the threat of radical Islamist jihadists using the West African state’s inhospitable Sahara desert as a launch pad for international attacks. They are helping with intelligence, airlift of troops, refuelling of planes and logistics, but do not plan to send combat troops to Mali. “Little by little, Mali is being liberated,” French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told France 2 television. At Gao, more than 300 km (190 miles) east of Timbuktu, jubilant residents danced to music in the streets on Sunday to celebrate the liberation of this other ancient Niger River town from the shariaobserving rebels. A third northern town, the Tuareg seat of Kidal, in Mali’s rugged and remote northeast, remains in the hands of the Islamist fighters, a loose alliance that groups AQIM with Malian Islamist group Ansar Dine and AQIM splinter MUJWA. With its cultural treasures, Timbuktu had previously been a destination for adventurous tourists and international scholars.
COMIC Beppe Grillo calls four-time Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi a “dwarf zombie”, outgoing premier Mario Monti “rigor Montis” and Italy’s political class “the walking dead”. Grillo, founder of a movement that will rival even the biggest parties at elections next month, hopes to wipe out the old guard: “We will bring some exorcists to parliament,” he said in an interview after a rain-drenched rally south of Rome. The 64-year-old Grillo is quick with wisecracks but the his 5-Star Movement is no joke. It is currently Italy’s second- or third-biggest party, depending on the poll, riding a wave of discontent at conventional politics and economic austerity. Crossing Italy on his “Tsunami tour”, Grillo hopes to overturn Italian politics in a way that has not happened since the “Clean Hands” corruption scandals buried a political generation in the early 1990s, making way for Berlusconi’s political rise. “Grillo is attracting people who are disgusted with politics,” said Maurizio Pessato, of pollsters SWG. Rivals decry the movement as a populist vehicle with
vague policy aims and it lost some momentum towards the end of last year as criticism grew that Grillo’s authoritarian style was stifling independent voices. But the 5-Star Movement is still second only to Pier Luigi Bersani’s Democratic Party (PD) at 17.2 per cent, up almost 2 percentage points in two weeks, an SWG poll published on Friday said, tying Berlusconi’s People of Freedom (PDL), which lost half a percentage point from a week earlier. That means that more than 50 - Grillo says 100 - of the movement’s candidates will fill parliament’s 945 seats. None of the 5-Star candidates has ever been there, and most are complete newcomers to politics at any level. His influence has already guaranteed Italy a new generation of lawmakers - more than half of those elected on February 24-25 will be novices, according to a study published last week. Instead of the movement’s leaders picking its candidates, the 5-Star Movement held a primary, a move the PD copied. Monti picked political novices for his list and Berlusconi’s PDL eliminated candidates accused of ties to the mafia.

Nightclub fire kills more than 200 in Brazil
WORLD TODAY US condemns pastor jailing THE US State Department on Sunday condemned an Iranian court for sentencing an Iranian-American Christian pastor to eight years in prison. The State Department said it had confirmed reports of Saeed Abedini’s sentencing with the family’s attorney and called for his release. “We condemn Iran’s continued violation of the universal right of freedom of religion and we call on the Iranian authorities to respect Mr. Abedini’s human rights and release him,” State Department spokesperson Darby Holladay said. Hollaway said Abedini’s attorney had only one day to present his defence and the department was deeply concerned about the fairness and transparency of his trial. The American Centre for Law and Justice, a conservative lobbying group, said Abedini was convicted by Judge Pir-Abassi of Branch 26 of the Iranian Revolutionary Court for threatening Iran’s national security through his leadership in Christian house churches.
Fleeing patrons unable to find emergency exits after band pyrotechnics started blaze By Ana Flor
Sharon shows brain activity SEVEN years after suffering a massive stroke comatose ex- Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon has surprised his doctors by displaying “a certain degree of consciousness”, an expert who examined him using an MRI scan said on Sunday. The results of tests conducted by a joint IsraeliAmerican team did not mean the former general and right-wing politician turned peacemaker was about to wake up from the coma he has been in since a January 2006 stroke. But doctors saw the responses displayed by Sharon, 84, in a twohour exam on Thursday as “encouraging” that there may some day be a cure for some comas, Alon Friedman, a neurological director at Israel’s Soroka Medical Centre in Beersheba, said.
Chavez letter HUGO Chavez, Venezuela’s cancer-stricken president, made his presence felt at a regional summit yesterday with a flowery letter from his sickbed in Cuba that was laced with literary references and calls for Latin American unity. Chavez has not been seen in public since cancer surgery in Cuba in mid-December, missing his own inauguration for a new sixyear term this month and fueling uncertainty over the illness jeopardising his 14-year rule.
Relatives of victims from a fire that broke out at a nightclub weep during their funeral in Santa Maria, 550 Km from Porto Alegre, southern Brazil yesterday (AFP)
AT least 200 people were killed in a nightclub fire in southern Brazil on Sunday after a band’s pyrotechnics show set the building ablaze, and fleeing patrons were unable to find the emergency exits, local officials said. Bodies were still being removed from the Kiss nightclub in the southern city of Santa Maria, Major Gerson da Rosa Ferreira, who was leading rescue efforts at the scene for the military police, told Reuters. Local officials said 180 people were confirmed dead, and Ferreira said the death toll would rise above 200. He said the victims died of asphyxiation or from being trampled, and that there were possibly as many as 500 people inside the club when the fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m. Television footage showed people sobbing outside the club, while shirtless firefighters used sledge hammers and axes to knock down an exterior
wall to open up an exit. “It was really fast. There was a lot of smoke, really dark smoke,” survivor Aline Santos Silva, 29, told Globonews TV. “We were only able to get out quickly because we were in a VIP area close to the door.” President Dilma Rousseff cut short a visit to Chile and was returning to Brazil following the blaze, her spokesperson said.
ORIGIN A FLARE Luiza Sousa, a civil police official in Santa Maria, told Reuters the blaze started when a member of the band or its production team ignited a flare, which then set fire to the ceiling. The fire spread “in seconds,” Sousa said. The disaster recalls other incidents including a 2003 fire at a nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, that killed 100, and a Buenos Aires nightclub blaze in 2004 that killed nearly 200. In both incidents, a band or members of the audience ignited fires that set the establishment
ablaze. “We appear to have very short memories,” said John Barylick, author of Killer Show, a book about the Rhode Island fire, and a lead attorney representing victims in that case. “This is exactly the perfect storm that we had at the Station nightclub 10 years ago.” Brazil’s safety standards and emergency response capabilities are under particular scrutiny as the country prepares to host the 2014 World Cup football tournament and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Rio Grande do Sul state Health Secretary Ciro Simoni said emergency medical supplies from all over the state were being sent to the scene. Santa Maria is some 186 miles (300 km) west of the state capital of Porto Alegre. “A sad Sunday!” tweeted Rio Grande do Sul Governor Tarso Genro. Trail to Bo trial only a dead end CHINA scotched reports that disgraced politician Bo Xilai’s much-anticipated trial would open yesterday, amid chaotic scenes at a courthouse packed with expectant journalists in the south of the country. A report last week in a Beijing-backed Hong Kong newspaper prompted dozens of reporters to travel to the sleepy city of Guiyang expecting to cover the trial of the man who was once considered a contender for China’s top leadership. The paper has been known to reliably report news Chinese state media won’t touch. Flummoxed, local court officials held a hasty and unusual press conference to deny a trial was in the offing and pleaded for the media to leave them alone. Almost a year after Bo’s fall from grace under a cloud of lurid accusations about corruption, abuse of power and murder, the government has given no definitive timeframe for when Bo will face the courts, or even announced formal charges. “To date, the Intermediate People’s Court of Guiyang has received no information whatsoever about the trial of Bo Xilai taking place in Guiyang,” said Jiang Hao, deputy
head of the Guiyang court. “If the next step is to hold the Bo Xilai trial in Guiyang’s court, then, as according to rules, we will inform our media friends promptly,” Jiang told about 30 reporters crammed into a small room inside the court. Bo was ousted from his post as Communist Party chief in the southwestern city of Chongqing last year following his wife’s murder of a British businessman, Neil Heywood. Bo, 63, was widely tipped to be promoted to the party’s elite inner core before his career unravelled. The downfall came after his former police chief, Wang Lijun, fled briefly to a US consulate last February and alleged that Bo’s wife, Gu Kailai, had murdered Heywood with poison. Gu and Wang have both since been convicted and jailed. No criminal charges against Bo have yet been revealed, only accusations from the party of corruption and of bending the law to hush up Heywood’s killing. Bo was last seen in public last March and is being held in custody, though there has been no word on his whereabouts and he has not been allowed to defend himself in public.

India rape case teen to be tried as juvenile, angering victim’s kin AN Indian teenager accused of taking part in the December 16 gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student in New Delhi will be tried as a juvenile, facing a maximum of three years in prison if convicted, a special panel ruled yesterday. The ruling shocked the victim’s father, who watched the news flash across his television screen. “A sudden current ran through my body in disbelief. I can’t believe this,” the father told Reuters. “How can they
declare him a minor? Do they not see what they did?” The teenager has not yet been formally charged because police were hoping he would be declared an adult so they could include him in the main trial of his five co-accused. He does not have a lawyer and his account of what happened on December 16 is not known. Lawyers for the five accused men said they would plead not guilty and one
has accused police of torturing him, his lawyer said. The panel’s decision on the youth is likely to infuriate many people, including protesters, some police and political leaders, who have called for the age at which people can be tried as adults to be lowered to 16 from 18. A government committee examining changes to sexual crime laws, however, last week ruled out such a move. Police allege the 17-year-old and five
men gang-raped and severely beat the student on a bus in the capital before dumping her and a male friend in the road. The woman was so badly injured that she died of massive organ failure in a Singapore hospital two weeks later. The case has sparked national debate about rampant crime against women, and President Pranab Mukherjee, called in a television state-of-the nation address on Friday for the country to “reset its moral compass”.

Iran sends a live monkey to space West fears advance may aid Iran nuke quest By Yeganeh Torbati IRAN said yesterday it had launched a live monkey into space, seeking to show off missile systems that have alarmed the West because the technology could potentially be used to deliver a nuclear warhead. The Defence Ministry announced the launch as world powers sought to agree a date and venue with Iran for resuming talks to resolve a standoff with the West over Tehran’s contested nuclear programme before it degenerates into a new Middle East war. Efforts to nail down a new meeting have failed repeatedly and the powers fear Iran is exploiting the diplomatic vacuum to hone the means to produce nuclear weapons. The Islamic Republic denies seeking weapons capability and says it seeks only electricity from its uranium enrichment so it can export more of its considerable oil wealth. The powers have proposed new talks in February, a spokesman for the European Union’s foreign policy chief said yesterday, hours after Russia urged all concerned to “stop behaving like children” and commit to a meeting. Iran earlier in the day denied media reports of a major explosion at one of its most sensitive, underground enrichment plants, describing
them as Western propaganda designed to influence the nuclear talks. The Defence Ministry said the space launch of the monkey coincided “with the days of” the Prophet Mohammad’s birthday, which was last week, but gave no date, according to a statement carried by the official news agency IRNA.
‘GIANT STEP’ The launch was “another giant step” in space technology and biological research “which is the monopoly of a few countries”, the statement said. The grey monkey was pictured strapped into a padded seat and being loaded into the Kavoshgar rocket dubbed “Pishgam” (Pioneer) which state media said reached a height of more than 120 km (75 miles). “This shipment returned safely to Earth with the anticipated speed along with the live organism,” Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi told the semi-official Fars news agency. “The launch of Kavoshgar and its retrieval is the first step towards sending humans into space in the next phase.” There was no independent confirmation of the launch. The West worries that longrange ballistic technology used to propel Iranian satellites into orbit could be put to use dispatching nuclear warheads to a target.
Bruno Gruselle of France’s Foundation for Strategic Research said that if the monkey launch report were true it would suggest a “quite significant” engineering feat by Iran. “If you can show that you are able to protect a vehicle of this sort from re-entry, then you can probably protect a military warhead and make it survive the high temperatures and high pressures of re-entering,” Gruselle said. The monkey launch would be similar to sending up a satellite weighing some 2,000 kg (4,400 pounds), he said. Success would suggest a capacity to deploy a surface-to-surface missile with a range of a few thousand kilometres (miles). Michael Elleman, a missile expert at the International Institute for Strategic Studies think-tank, said Iran had shown “no new military or strategic capability” with the launch. “Nonetheless, Iran has an ambitious space exploration programme that includes the goal of placing a human in space in the next five or so years and a human-inhabited orbital capsule by the end of the decade,” Elleman said. “Today’s achievement is one step toward the goal, albeit a small one.” The Islamic Republic announced plans in 2011 to send a monkey into space, but that attempt was reported to have failed.
A MAN was shot dead yesterday in a fifth day of violence in Egypt that has killed 50 people and prompted the Islamist president to declare a state of emergency in an attempt to end a wave of unrest sweeping the Arab world’s biggest nation. Emergency rule announced by President Mohamed Mursi on Sunday covers the cities of Port Said, Ismailia and Suez. The army has already been deployed in two of those cities and cabinet approved a measure to let soldiers arrest civilians. A cabinet source said any trials would be before civilian courts, but the step is likely to anger protesters who accuse Mursi of using high-handed security tactics of the kind they fought against to oust President Hosni Mubarak. Egypt’s politics have become deeply polarised since those heady days two years ago, when protesters were making most of the running in the Arab Spring revolutions that sent shockwaves through the region and Islamists and liberals lined up together. Although Islamists have won parliamentary and presidential elections, the disparate opposition has since united against Mursi. Late last year he moved to expand his powers and push a constitution with Islamist leanings through
Mursi’s call for a national dialogue were spurned by his main opponents a referendum, punctuated by violent street protests. Mursi’s call for a national dialogue meeting yesterday to help end the crisis was spurned by his main opponents. They accuse Mursi of hijacking the revolution, listening only to his Islamist allies and breaking a promise to be a president for all Egyptians. Islamists say their rivals want to overthrow by undemocratic means Egypt’s first freely elected leader. Anti-Mursi protesters were out on the streets again in Cairo and elsewhere yesterday, the second anniversary of one of the bloodiest days in the revolution that erupted on January 25, 2011, ending Mubarak’s rule 18 days later.

Business Court backs Iceland over debts
Monte Paschi finds no proof of takeover bribes
ICELAND won a court ruling yesterday allowing it to repay billions of euros on its own terms to Britain and the Netherlands for bailing out depositors in a failed Icelandic bank. Iceland has said it will fully repay both countries, but through a gradual process as it runs down the assets of failed bank Landsbanki, which collapsed in 2008 leaving depositors of its Icesave online accounts stranded. Britain and the Netherlands stepped in to repay savers, but it sparked a political row and the two countries sought court backing to say Iceland had failed to repay the money within time limits set by a European directive for deposit guarantee schemes. A European court dismissed the case yesterday. Officials on the small north Atlantic island expressed relief over the ruling. “Icesave is now no longer a stumbling block to Iceland’s economic recovery,” Iceland’s Foreign Ministry said. All of Iceland’s banks collapsed four years ago, early in the financial crisis, and the UK and Dutch governments wanted Iceland to pay them back directly and quickly. Iceland did not comply, triggering a row between the governments and potentially complicating the island’s bid to join the European Union. The court of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) said Iceland did not break depositor protection laws by refusing to return the money, because the scale of its financial crisis was so big. “The verdict is, of course, a fantastic and total victory for us,” said Icelandic Industries Minister Steingrimur Sigfusson, who was finance minister during the dispute. “It’s good to have this whole unpleasant business out of the way,” he said in comments on public broadcaster RUV.
CEO Viola criticises former management By Silvia Aloisi and Lisa Jucca ITALY’S troubled Monte dei Paschi bank said yesterday it had no evidence of bribery in a 2007 takeover now under scrutiny over alleged corruption, but acknowledged accounting irregularities under previous management over derivatives trades. Fabrizio Viola, appointed as chief executive last year after a clean-out of Monte dei Paschi’s old management, said the bank had used complex refinancing deals to hide losses, leaving it dangerously exposed to interest rates swings. “Today, we have the certainty that errors were made, whether it was due to negligence or deliberate fault remains to be seen,” Viola told a meeting with foreign journalists in Milan. The bank, founded during the Renaissance in 1472 and based in the Tuscan town of Siena, has run into deep trouble since its 9 billion euro cash purchase of rival Banca Antonveneta in 2007, just before the global financial crash. A source close to the judicial investigation told Reuters that magistrates were looking at the possibility of a bribe being paid at the time of the purchase. The Antonveneta deal weakened the bank and appears to have forced it to try to

These contracts had probably been put in place to spread over time the impact of losses made at the time, possibly also through other financial operations,” said Viola. linking two of the financial transactions in question had been concealed in a safe at the bank’s headquarters and not revealed to authorities until he had discovered it in October. The bank, which has a “junk” credit rating, was forced to ask Rome last year for state support after failing to fill a capital gap as required by European regulators. The case has shot to the top of the political agenda, less than a month before the elections, because of close links between Monte Paschi
and regional governments led by the centre-left Democratic Party, which is leading in opinion polls. Viola said Monte Paschi (MPS) would not need any more state aid above a 3.9 billion euro ($5.26 billion) package approved by the Bank of Italy on Saturday, but he said that the bank’s financial portfolio needed to be rebalanced. “I did not consider that the dimension and structure of the MPS financial portfolio was appropriate for a commercial bank,” he said.

Caterpillar expects to earn $7 to $9 per share in 2013, below the $9.12 per share that analysts anticipate
CATERPILLAR Inc, the world’s largest maker of construction equipment, posted a 55 per cent drop in quarterly profit yesterday due to a charge connected with accounting fraud at a Chinese subsidiary and weak demand among its dealers. Caterpillar’s bulldozers, tractors and other machines have been accumulating in warehouses due to slowing economies in China, Europe and the United States. The company said it was able to sell off some of this glut in the fourth quarter, reducing the value of its inventory from the third quarter by $2 billion. Inventory levels, however, remain $1 billion above year-ago levels, and executives expect 2013 to be a “tough year.” Adding to the company’s troubles, quarterly results were hit by a charge of 87 cents per share after the company discovered accounting fraud at a Chinese coal mining supplier it bought last year. In a sombre note on the global economy, Caterpillar said the “most significant favourable factor” for 2013 profit will be the absence of the ERA accounting fraud writedown, not increased demand for its machines. “We’re encouraged by recent improvements in economic indicators, but remain cautious,” Caterpillar Chief Executive Doug Oberhelman said in a statement yesterday. For the fourth quarter, the company posted
net income of $697 million, or $1.04 per share, compared with $1.55 billion, or $2.32 per share, in the year-ago quarter. Excluding one-time items, the company earned $1.46 per share. By that measure, analysts expected earnings of $1.69 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Wall Street, however, appeared to look past the China accounting fraud mess, sending Caterpillar’s shares up 2.1 per cent to $97.62 in morning trading. Revenue fell 7 per cent to $16.08 billion. Analysts expected revenue of $16.12 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Caterpillar expects to earn $7 to $9 per share in 2013, below the $9.12 per share analysts expect. Caterpillar closed the purchase of ERA Mining Machinery Ltd and its subsidiary Siwei, China’s fourth-largest maker of hydraulic coal mine roof supports, last June, paying $653.4 million (HK$5.06 billion). After the deal closed, Caterpillar found that physical inventory did not match accounting statements, a discovery that led to the charge. The case has opened questions about Caterpillar’s research into ERA before the deal, as well as the adequacy of its auditors. Caterpillar does not expect the fraud to harm its 2013 profit, but it will hinder the company’s expansion into China, the world’s largest coal producer.

Opinion
The painful truth is that we are in a very weak position AN ARTICLE which appeared in yesterday’s edition of Politis revealed that at the last Euro Group meeting, eight days ago, the issue of withdrawing emergency liquidity assistance (ELA) from Cypriot banks was raised. It was the second time in two months that we were faced with this threat which, if carried out, would have led to a collapse of the banks. It was the threat of the immediate withdrawal of ELA, in the event of no agreement with the troika that obliged President Christofias to make a commitment to the memorandum last November. Eight days ago, with Germany taking the line that the signing of a memorandum would be put off indefinitely, the President of the European Central Bank pointed out that in such a case the ECB would have to cut the access of the Cypriot banks to the ECB. The banks had access to liquidity only as long as a memorandum was on the cards. The ECB position proved helpful in that it forced the Euro Group to go against Germany’s position and set a date for the signing of a memorandum. Some of the group’s member-states felt that a banking collapse in Cyprus would have caused turmoil in the markets and threatened the stability of the eurozone. The compromise that satisfied the ECB and ensured the continuation of ELA was an agreement on ‘terms of reference’ that were binding for both sides. Under the terms, Cyprus agreed to the inclusion in the memorandum of understanding of provisions stipulating the close monitoring of the institutional framework for tackling money laundering and of the institutional framework for transparency. Cyprus also assured that it would be able to cover its financial needs until the end of March. According to the report, the finance ministry has already started work on preparing measures that would be implemented as soon as possible; there are plans to set up a data-base to which foreign countries would have access. The finance minister’s agreement to the terms of reference is binding for the government so there is no chance President Christofias would scupper it before he leaves office. The terms of reference would also satisfy the German government, which would have to defend its support for the bailout, for which there is strong political opposition, in an election year. There may be dissatisfaction over the terms in Cyprus, but the painful truth is that we are in a very weak position. Our economic survival is totally dependent on our banks having access to ELA. Our politicians should bear this in mind instead of telling people they would never accept the privatisation of the SGOs or interference of the troika in our energy policy. Only our demagogue president can take this irresponsible stance, as he will not be around to sign the memorandum in March.

Kim the reformer? I
F NORTH Korea’s new leader, Kim Jong-un, wanted to end the brutal and destructive tyranny that his father and grandfather imposed on the country, he would need support from abroad. The military and Communist Party elites who control and benefit from that system would have to be brought round or bought off, and that would require lots of foreign aid and a global amnesty for their crimes. So how would he get the foreigners to help? Well, he’d have to show them that he was willing to reform – but he couldn’t be too obvious about it at first, or those elites would just get rid of him. He’d drop a hint here, make a gesture there, and hope that the foreigners would trust him and help him to change the country. Rather like the rest of the world responded when the Burmese generals started hinting that they were ready to dismantle their half-century-old dictatorship two years ago. Unfortunately, Kim Jong-un would drop the same hints and make the same gestures if his only wish was to sucker the outside world into propping up the bankrupt system in North Korea with more big shipments of free food and fuel. There’s no way to read his mind, so how should the foreigners respond? This is not a theoretical question, for he is sending out those signals. Never mind the cosmetic stuff like being seen in public with a new wife who dresses in fashionable Western clothes. In his televised New Year’s message to the Korean people, he spoke of the need to “remove confrontation between the North and the South,” and called for dramatic improvements in the national economy. Unfortunately, since he’s not making any political or economic reforms at home at the moment – that’s what he MIGHT do if he
Comment Gwynne Dyer had foreign help – we can’t conclude anything about his intentions from his domestic policies. And his foreign policy is hardly encouraging either. North Korea doesn’t have much by way of a foreign policy. The only consistent thread is its obsession with military power (it has one of the world’s biggest armies, though it has about the population of Australia), and latterly with ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons. On the other hand, here is a man whose only claim to power is heredity, in a country that does not have a formally recognised monarchy. To consolidate his power, he must persuade the military and Party elites that he is a reliable successor who will perpetuate the system that keeps them fat and happy, so his current aggressive posture in foreign policy is really no guide to his real intentions either. In fact, at this point there is really no way of telling what he means to do. The rest of the world, and in particular the United States and North Korea’s neighbours, South Korea, China and Japan, are going to have to make their decisions blind. What can they do that would help Kim Jong-un to bring the country out of its cave and start loosening the domestic tyranny, without actually making matters worse if he is not a secret reformer? The safest course would be to encourage dialogue between North and South Korea (which has just elected a new president, Park Geun-hye, who has declared her presidency ready to initiate unconditional talks with the North). It would also
North Korea’s new leader Kim Jong-un be sensible to ease back on the embargoes and other restrictions on North Korean imports for a while, since they are obviously achieving nothing in terms of stopping its weapons projects anyway. And what if Kim-Jong-un dares not or simply does not want to respond to these gestures with more promising moves himself? Then you just give up and go back to the policy of containment that has had so little suc-
cess over the years. North Korea is really a very small threat (except for its own people, of course), and it’s safe to take a little risk in the hope that the new ruler will respond. It’s the country’s only hope. There is not going to be a North Korean spring in the Arab style. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries
What EU Data Protection can do for growth ONE YEAR ago, ahead of the European Data Protection Day 2012, the European Commission proposed a root and branch reform of the EU’s data protection rules to make them fit for the 21st century. One year after the reform proposals, it’s easy to see why clear and modernised rules are needed. New rules are needed which both protect citizens’ rights and facilitate business in the digital age. The Lisbon Treaty provides a legal basis for strengthened data protection safeguards for citizens. A key objective of the reform proposals therefore is to increase individuals’ control over their personal data, thereby boosting confidence and trust in the digital economy. We must ensure that data protection standards keep pace with emerging technologies and new business models. We live in a digital world in which personal data has enormous economic value. Just look at the figures: while in 1993 the Internet carried only 1% of all telecommunicated information, by 2007, this figure was more than 97%. In 2011 the European market for cloud computing services had a value of €3.5 billion for software products and €1.1 billion for hardware products. Estimates for 2014 predict
Comment Viviane Reding and Alan Shatter that this market will grow to €11 billion. This is exponential growth. With more than 1 billion people worldwide connected to smartphones, an increasing variety of data can now be linked to individual identities. The insights that can be derived from linking previously separate bits of data have become essential for business and for innovation. Europe needs to take advantage of this new computing and information-sharing landscape. We need rules that don’t penalise companies for working crossborder. We need a solid legislative framework that will protect citizens and at the same time allow companies to take advantage of Europe’s digital single market, with 500 million potential customers. Some estimates show that EU GDP could grow by a further 4% by 2020 if the EU takes the necessary steps to create a modern digital single market. These new business models
depend on collecting, understanding and moving personal data. That is why the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council under and the Irish Presidency of the EU are currently spearheading a reform of the EU’s data protection rules which date back to 1995 – pre-Internet times. Our goal is to make the EU common market for goods and services, more accessible to businesses who process data and improve the trust and confidence of consumers who use their services. The proposed EU data protection reforms will do three things to help business to innovate and contribute to growth: First, it will cut costs and increase legal certainty by replacing the current patchwork of laws in Europe with a single uniform set of rules for all 27 European Union countries. We are cutting red tape by introducing a one-stop shop for businesses to deal with regulators. In the future, companies will only have to deal with the data protection authorities in the EU country in which they are based: one interlocutor, not 27. Second, we should never forget that violations of data protection rules can have an enormous cost. Getting companies to think ahead about the need
for data protection safeguards will reduce the risk. Making sure customers are notified fast when their data is hacked will generate trust. More people will do business online: good for growth and good for jobs. This is common sense. Third, the new rules will provide clarity for international data transfers. Personal data can be collected in Berlin and processed in Bangalore. The new EU data protection rules will improve the current system of binding corporate rules to make these types of exchanges less burdensome and more secure. The EU Data Protection reforms were discussed by Justice Ministers and Members of the European Parliament in Dublin two weeks ago. They received strong support, helping to accelerate the pace for getting this important reform agreed before the end of this year. The message is clear: a uniform and modern data protection law for the European Union is exactly what we need to secure trust and generate growth in the digital single market. Viviane Reding is Vice President of the European Commission in charge of Justice and Alan Shatter is the Irish Justice Minister

Argo boosts Oscar chances with two weekend awards Day-Lewis, Lawrence take acting honours at SAG awards
By Piya Sinha-Roy
By Jill Serjeant IRAN hostage drama Argo won its second big award in two days on Sunday, boosting its chances of winning a best picture Oscar next month in a race that had been considered wide open. Argo won best cast ensemble, the top prize, at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, while Daniel Day-Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence took lead acting honours. On Saturday, Argo won the Producers Guild Award - a key measure of Hollywood sentiment - beating Lincoln, Les Miserables, and Silver Linings Playbook, which are all Academy Award best picture contenders. “There was absolutely no way I thought we would win this award,” the film’s director and star, Ben Affleck, told reporters backstage after the SAG win. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) ceremony is among the most-watched during Hollywood’s awards season because actors make up the largest voting group in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which chooses the Oscar winners. The SAG honours are selected by about 100,000 actors working in the United States.
Abrams to helm new Star Wars, fans say force with him
Director and actor Ben Affleck holds the award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture for Argo at the 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles SAG prizes acting over directing, screenplay writing and other skills that usually factor into the Oscar best picture choice. British-born Day-Lewis, who has picked up a slew of awards for his intense portrayal of US President Abraham Lincoln’s efforts to abolish slavery in Lincoln, confirmed his status as frontrunner for what would be his record third Oscar on February 24. But the actor played down his Oscar hopes backstage. “Members of the academy
love surprises, so about the worst thing that can happen to you is if you’ve built up an expectation,” Day-Lewis told reporters. Accepting his award on stage to a standing ovation, he recalled that “it was an actor that murdered Abraham Lincoln and, therefore, it is sometimes only fitting that, now and then, an actor tries to bring him back to life again.” In one of the most closely contested categories, Lawrence, 22, was chosen best lead actress for playing an
outspoken young widow in Silver Linings Playbook over Jessica Chastain’s feisty CIA agent in Osama bin Laden thriller Zero Dark Thirty. Tommy Lee Jones, 66, won the best supporting actor trophy for his turn as radical Congressman Thaddeus Stevens in Lincoln, beating strong competition from Robert De Niro, who played a gruff father in Silver Linings Playbook. Anne Hathaway, 30, won her first SAG award for her supporting role as the tragic Fantine in musical Les Mis-
erables. SAG also handed out awards for performances in TV dramas, comedies and mini-series, and gave a lifetime achievement award to actor Dick Van Dyke. In TV drama, the British cooks and countesses period show Downton Abbey won best ensemble cast. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston was named best actor and Homeland’s Claire Danes best actress. Modern Family won the best comedy cast ensemble award for a third consecutive time.
Singer Morrissey postpones Bradley Cooper to play Lance six more shows due to ulcer By Alex Dobuzinskis BRITISH rock singer Morrissey is postponing six performances on his US tour due to a bleeding ulcer, his spokeswoman said on Sunday. “Morrissey is expected to make a full recovery and thanks everyone concerned for their support during this time,” his representative Lauren Papapietro said in a statement. Morrissey, the former lead singer for 1980s alternative rock band The Smiths, checked into Beaumont Hospital on Friday in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak, Papapietro said. She declined to say if he remains hospitalised. Due to his bleeding ulcer, Morrissey is postponing his upcoming shows in Asheville, North Carolina; Nashville, Tennessee; Atlanta, Georgia; Lawrence, Kansas; Clear Lake, Iowa; and Lincoln, Nebraska, Papapietro said. He plans to resume his tour on February 9 in Las Vegas. Due to an illness in his band, Morrissey, 53, cancelled his show Thursday in Flint, Michigan, and postponed a Friday night performance in Minneapolis and another engagement set for Saturday night in Chicago, Papapietro said. Morrissey, whose hits include First of the Gang to Die and Irish Blood, English Heart, toured North America last fall, played some shows in Australia and New Zealand in December and returned to the United States this month. He kicked off his latest tour with a performance of his unreleased song Action is My Middle Name on The Late Show with David Letterman in New York.

BRADLEY Cooper has begun talks to play Lance Armstrong. The Oscar nominated Silver Linings Playbook star - who previously expressed his desire to portray the “fascinating” disgraced cyclist after he was stripped of his titles between 1999 and 2005 when it emerged he had taken performanceenhancing drugs - has formally approached J.J. Abrams’ about starring in his upcoming biopic about Lance’s rise and fall from grace. J.J. confirmed that he is considering the 38-year-old star for the role after he reached out to him via email. News that the actor is now in line for the role, comes just days after Bradley admitted in an interview: “I would be interested in playing Armstrong. I think he’s fascinating. What a fascinating character. I remember Matt Damon was going to do his autobiography at one point years ago. “I remember thinking, that would be a great character, I’d love to play that character. I would love to do something.”
SCI-FI filmmaker J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, Walt Disney said after days of speculation, giving hope to many long-suffering fans who were disappointed by the last three instalments in the iconic franchise. The announcement was greeted with celebrations on online networks by the films’ army of enthusiasts who have already watched Abrams rescue the aging Star Trek series with a highgrossing prequel in 2009. Disney said Abrams would work under the leadership of producer Kathleen Kennedy, the former president of Lucasfilm, and the script would be penned by Oscar-winning writer Michael Arndt. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise,” Kennedy said in a statement on starwars. com. Fans were equally enthusiastic on Twitter. Rumours that Abrams, one of Hollywood’s most successful directors and producers, would take stewardship of the films filled industry publications and online forums over the past week. The 46-year-old made his name with TV shows Alias and Lost and earned his stripes as a director of effects-laden blockbusters with Super 8, Mission: Impossible III and another widely expected Star Trek film Star Trek Into Darkness, due out later this year. The Star Wars franchise, which was created by George Lucas’ Lucasfilms Ltd, has grossed more than $4.4 billion at the global box office since the first film was released in 1977, making it the third most successful movie property after the Harry Potter and James Bond series. Star Wars characters such as Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker and the anti-hero, Darth Vader, have become a staple part of pop culture, along with the catch phrase ‘May the force be with you’. The Star Wars films were acquired by Disney after they bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in October 2012. They announced then that three new instalments would be made, starting in 2015. Lucas, 68, gave Abrams his blessing on Starwars.com, saying the director was “an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands”. Abrams said his new role was “an absolute honour.” Disney had previously said Lucas would remain a creative consultant on the series.

Extinction rates of numerous species ‘over-estimated’ By John von Radowitz REPORTS of the death of numerous species on Earth have been greatly exaggerated, according to a team of scientists. Extinction rates have been wildly overestimated, partly because of misconceptions about how many plants and animals exist on Earth, researchers said. They claim that globally, around one per cent of species are likely
to be vanishing per decade rather than the five per cent figure some experts have proposed. “Our findings are potentially good news for the conservation of global biodiversity,” said lead scientist Professor Mark Costello, from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Writing in the journal Science, the researchers calculate that there are around five million species of plants and animals on Earth, of which 1.5 million have
been named. This is far fewer than some other estimates, which put the figure as high as 100 million. If a habitat is thought to contain more animals than it does, this can easily lead to a mistaken idea of how quickly they are disappearing. Finding 500 members of a species in a population estimated to top 1,000 would indicate a more than 50 per cent decline. But if the population was actu-
ally 500 in the first place, the loss rate falls to zero. “Over-estimates of the number of species on Earth are self-defeating because they can make attempts to discover and conserve biodiversity appear to be hopeless,” said Prof Costello. “Our work suggests that this is far from the case. “We believe that with just a modest increase in effort in taxonomy and conservation, most species could be discovered and protected
from extinction.” Co-author Professor Nigel Stork, from Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, said: “Surprisingly, few species have gone extinct, to our knowledge. “Of course, there will have been some species which have disappeared without being recorded, but not many we think.” One of the greatest fears of conservationists has been that many species will die out before they have even been discovered.
Big cities’ heat can change temperature continent away
Deforestation appears to rise again in Brazil’s Burning fossil fuels in urban areas changes air currents Amazon By Deborah Zabarenko THE energy big cities burn mostly coal and oil to power buildings, cars and other devices - produces excess heat that can get into atmospheric currents and influence temperatures thousands of miles away, a new study found. The so-called waste heat that leaks out of buildings, vehicles and other sources in major Northern Hemisphere cities makes winters warmer across huge swaths of northern Asia and northern North America, according to a report published in the journal Nature Climate Change. That is different from what has long been known as the urban-heat island effect, where city buildings, roads and pavements hold on to the day’s warmth and make the urban area hotter than the surrounding countryside. Instead, the researchers wrote, the excess heat given off by burning fossil fuels appears to change air circulation patterns and then hitch a ride on air and ocean currents, including the jet stream. But study author Aixue Hu of the National Centre for Atmospheric Research in Colorado said in a statement that the excess heat generated by this burning in cities could change atmospheric patterns to raise or lower temperatures far afield. Some remote locations heat up by as much as 1 degree C
Bright lights: the heat of a city can be felt thousands of kilometres away
as a result, the study said. But some parts of Europe cool off a bit, especially in autumn, because of the way urban waste heat changes atmospheric circulation. The impact on global mean temperature is negligible, because the total amount of waste heat from human ac-
tivities is only about one-third of one per cent of the total amount of heat carried across high latitudes by air currents and oceans. But this waste heat from cities and the way it moves around could help explain why some places are warmer in winter than climate computer
models predict, the researchers said, and suggested that these models be adjusted to take this effect into account. “We have seen this global warming of the high-latitude regions over the last 50 years,” the study’s lead author, Guang Zhang of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, said.
“But the computer models to date have not been able to account for all the warming observed.” By adding the influence of big cities’ waste heat to their computer simulations, the researchers were able to find a likely cause for all that extra warmth, Zhang said.
AFTER years of gains against destruction of the Amazon rainforest, Brazil appears to be suffering from an increase in deforestation as farmers, loggers, miners and builders move into previously untouched woodland, according to data compiled by the government and independent researchers. Imazon, a Brazilian research institute that tracks deforestation through satellite imagery, said in a recent report that destruction in the world’s largest rainforest climbed for the fourth consecutive month in December. In the last five months of 2012, Imazon detected clearings of 1,288km² of woodland a Los Angeles-size total more than twice as big as the combined areas detected in the last five months of 2011. Preliminary data from Brazil’s space agency, which produces its own monthly estimates, also suggests an increase in deforestation between August and October, the last month for which its figures have been released. More data is needed to confirm a full-fledged reversal is underway after what had been a sustained reduction in deforestation in recent years. Among other variables, clouds from the ongoing rainy season hinder definitive imagery. Additional data could also clarify if new gaps in the rainforest canopy are the result of deliberate clearcutting and fires or of natural thinning.
China says major pollutant levels Deadline nears for action to Greenland ice is less vulnerable dropping, but hard task ahead protect Great Barrier Reef than feared to thaw says study CHINA’S environment minister has said that emissions of four major pollutants dropped last year and should fall by a similar level this year, but admitted the country faced a tough task in trying to end chronic air pollution. This winter’s pollution, especially in northern China, has been so severe even usually pliant state media has criticised government inaction, partly because it can’t be hidden from the public like other sensitive subjects such as corruption. But emissions of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, chemical oxygen and ammonia nitrogen all recorded on-year falls of two per cent in 2012, and were expected to drop by the same degree in 2013, or even faster, state media cited Zhou Shengxian as saying. “To cope with an air quality crisis, contingency measures will be adopted, such as suspending or limiting the production of certain vehicles and limiting emissions and car usage,” the official Xinhua news agency cited him as saying. “The ministry will also ban the operation of vehicles registered before 2005 under exhaust emissions requirements... and efforts will be made to improve the quality of gasoline and diesel.”
AUSTRALIA has to take swift action to protect the Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site, amid significant threats from industrial projects as a February deadline looms, environmental groups say. Heralded as one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the reef is home to 400 types of coral, 240 species of birds and 1,500 species of fish. It is worth A$6 billion annually to the local economy in tourism. UNESCO warned Australia last June over development on the reef, and the United Nations has said that the area could be listed as “in
danger” if there is no evidence of progress by February 1. “Australia’s most important environmental asset is under serious threat from existing and proposed industrialisation along the Queensland coast,” said Felicity Wishart, campaign director for the coalition composed of WWF Australia and the Australian Marine Conservation Society. Coal is one of Australia’s top export earners and the state of Queensland is the country’s largest coal producer. The reef faces growing threat from shipping driven by these project expansions.
GREENLAND is less vulnerable than expected to a runaway melt that would drive up world sea levels, according to scientists who found that only a quarter of the ice sheet thawed in a warm period more than 100,000 years ago. The study, involving 300 experts from 14 nations, implied that Antarctica at the other end of the planet would contribute at least as much or more to the kind of sea level rise that threatens coasts and cities from Mumbai to Miami. Climate scientists are struggling to understand the risks of a melt of the vast ice stores of Greenland and Antarctica to help plan coastal protection. Sea levels rose about 17cm in the past century and the rate has quickened. Examination of ice from a 2.5km deep ice core in northwest Greenland indicated that its ice sheet lost only about 400 metres in thickness in the early part of the Eemian, a warm period from about 130,000 to 115,000 years ago. They estimated it lost about a quarter of its ice overall, according to a study published in Nature. “The volume of ice lost from the Greenland ice sheet was more moderate than many had expected,” author Dorthe DahlJensen, professor at the University of Copenhagen, said.

videos. They called it You-Tube and it launched with the motto: “Broadcast Yourself”. “YouTube got there because it was a platform, not a channel. Because TV had such a dominant monopoly on attention in the living room, it had been hard for people to think that audiences might want to consume content in a different way,” says Matt Locke, former Channel 4 commissioning editor and founder of Storythings. Today, YouTube is the secondlargest search engine on the planet after Google itself, which bought
the company in October 2006 for $1.65 billion. Google did two things that turned YouTube into a business, and eventually its own industry. First, it globalised the platform. This meant that niche topics, ones that could never justify a channel in a single domestic market, had a global reach. Young creators such as Edwards, Hood and Burr started building audiences around particular niches, whether dubstep or make-up. They interacted with their audiences and responded to comments and video suggestions. This meant
real-time audience feedback - a form of market testing. “If it doesn’t work out, you try something else,” says Day. “The ability to interact with their audience is a critical part of their success,” says Sara Mormino, director of YouTube content operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “It’s a two-way dialogue that was not possible with traditional media.” Most of all, the emerging stars of this new platform are authentic. None of them started out to make careers, they just wanted to share their videos. “When me and Charlie started, we weren’t doing it for the money,” says Day. “Everything we’ve got has been a side- effect.” But YouTube was not making its creators - or Google - any money: in 2008, its revenues were $200 million, but it spent $700 million. Advertisers were unconvinced by a platform whose biggest hits included Baby Monkey (Going Backwards On a Pig), and users didn’t like clicking on ads. At a Super Bowl party in 2008 Microsoft employee Shishir Mehrotra, struck by how his guests kept asking him to replay the Super Bowl adverts, wondered whether the idea could be applied online: could you show only the adverts that a user wanted to watch? His solution was video adverts that users could skip. Advertisers would pay only when a user chose to watch their advert, and therefore would get engaged, interested users. Mehrotra took his idea to Google and on December 1, 2010, TrueView rolled out. Now, 65 per cent of YouTube adverts are skippable and, according to Enders Analysis, the cost per thousand views is often more than $15 - two to three times the standard rate for non-skippable adverts. Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s global head of content, says that YouTube adverts now make more

Tomorrow Other Events There’s no place like home To be born in one place, to grow old in another and to feel a stranger in both. This is the subject of a lecture and screening due to take place tomorrow evening at the Home for Cooperation in Nicosia. The AHDR, in collaboration with the NGO Support Centre are hosting an open lecture entitled “Lands of No Return: Population Exchange and Forced Displacement in the 20th Century”, delivered by Prof. Roger Zetter, Emeritus Professor in Refugee Studies, University of Oxford. Prof. Zetter will be in Cyprus for a series of open lectures at local universities within the framework of the project ‘Knowledge Makes Change!’ which is run by the NGO SC. While international migration amid new patterns of globalisation was the norm in the postindustrial era, in the political sphere, it generally assumed a darker face. During the 20th century, the largest number of people moved across state borders due to population exchanges and forced migration. For example, residents in the Balkans were living in a multiethnic Ottoman Empire which allowed Christians, Muslims, and Jews to live together in relative peace. But by 1924 these communities were in turmoil and roughly 1.2 million Greek
This Week Music Hail King Barbar From the depths of the jungle through the streets of Paris, the adventures of the little elephant in The Story of Babar have enchanted generations of children throughout the world. The musical adaptation of Jean de Brunhoff’s beloved book by French composer Francis Poulenc will be performed by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra as part of its musical education for early childhood. The vivid accompanying narration by Petros Yiorkatzis will help bring the story to life and the programme will be taking place under the musical direction of conductor Alkis Baltas; children will sing with the orchestra for Babar’s song (lyrics Vicky Stylianou). The concerts are organised once again this year, due to high demand and requests by the orchestra’s friends and audience. As most chil-
Orthodox Christians were forcefully expelled from their homes in Turkey (then Asia Minor) in exchange for 400,000 Muslims living in Greece. The topic of the forthcoming lecture is the legacy of the forced migration of ethnoreligious minorities in and out of Asia Minor. Prof. Zetter’s lecture will be followed by the film screening of Twice a Stranger. Produced by Anemon and ERT, the film examines the historical background that led to the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, and in parallel gives voice to surviving refugees on both sides of the border; the enormous consequences of population transfer, told through the common ground of human experience. Prof. Zetter has written over 30 peer-reviewed papers, over 20 book chapters, four books, 10 major research reports and numerous op eds. Besides refugee and humanitarian policies, his academic work includes shelter and settlement for the forcibly displaced, urban housing and land and property issues. His current research explores the links between environmental change, livelihoods and displacement, focusing specifically on the protection of the rights of those vulnerable to displacement by the impacts of climate change. Lands of No Return: Population Exchange and Forced Displacement in the 20th Century An open lecture on issues of refugees and forced migration by Prof. Zetter & Screening of Twice a Stranger. Soon after publication, English versions appeared in America and soon Babar’s stories spread around the world. It was the efforts of one of Poulenc’s young relatives that resulted in his musical composition, The Story of Babar. The young girl begged Poulenc to stop playing his classical music and instructed him to play her child’s book instead. As she placed the copy of her book onto Poulenc’s music desk, his interpretation of Babar became a reality. Two afternoon concerts will take place, the first tomorrow at the Markideion Theatre in Paphos, followed by a concert on Friday at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre in Nicosia. These concerts are a great introduction to the orchestra and are perfect for families with children ages three to eight years. The score uses various devices to paint the scenes of Babar’s life. With this programme, children will have the opportunity to enjoy the musical story of their favourite p elephant. They will also have the ch chance to get to know the music instruments of the Symcal p phony Orchestra and to practise their appreciation for music, as well as the appropriate audience attitude. Take Shelter (Novacinema2, 17.55) It’s the great Michael Shannon (seriously, the man can do no wrong), as a very decent husband and father who starts having awful apocalyptic visions. The visions make him paranoid - and also convince him that the End of the World is nigh, prompting him to start building an expensive storm shelter in his backyard, much to the dismay of his loyal wife (Jessica Chastain, doing wonders with a stock role). The film’s genius lies in being a disease-of-the-week movie - doctors claim our hero’s suffering from a chemical imbalance - that’s played as psychological horror, Shannon bringing out the man’s disintegrating psyche with utter conviction; when he finally explodes at a barbecue, telling every-
one there’s a storm coming “and there’s not a one of you is prepared for it”, you genuinely don’t know - for all his obvious insanity - if he’s going to be proved right or not. Only the ending seems wrong at first glance, but it works if you see it as being yet another vision. I can say no more. Made in 2011.
Dr. T and the Women (Capital, 21.00) I pity the fool who thinks he understands women! True enough - but those might be the words of Mr. T, the trash-talking boxer, not Dr. T, a rich gynaecologist played with smooth assurance by Richard Gere. Dr. T loves the female sex, declares that women are “saints
by nature” and dedicates himself to looking after them - and his view is gallant but a bit condescending, so it’s no surprise when the women in his life fail to match his fond idealism. His wife (Farrah Fawcett) has a nervous breakdown, his daughter (Kate Hudson) is getting married but is actually a lesbian having it off with the maid of honour, his sister-in-law (Laura Dern) is a meddling so-and-so, and only a golf instructor (Helen Hunt) offers some shelter from this female tsunami. Halfway between a sitcom and the looselimbed chaos of a good comic novel - and some complained about the dizzy, chattering women, but why must women always be paragons of good sense? They’re people too, you know. Made in 2000.

ARIES March 21 - April 20
LEO July 23 - August 22
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21
You may be busy with routine tasks, especially any that you might have been putting off. The sooner you get ahead, the better you’ll feel. Meanwhile, you seem keen to get out and about. You’ll enjoy being with friends and generally networking for fun and pleasure. Remember to keep an eye on your energy though, especially if you are partying hard!
There are still plenty of fun and good times to be had if you want them. You may be so busy teaming up with others, pooling resources and sharing ideas, as well as chipping in to other people’s schemes and projects, that you may have lost track of your own needs. Spend a little time today reflecting on your priorities - then adjust accordingly.
You may want to make plans for a getaway soon, and you may feel you deserve it. Better still, book a break with a friend and enjoy some rest and relaxation together. The focus can also be on promoting yourself and getting your message out to others. It could be a busy day, especially if you have trips to make and people to see - but all this can be enjoyable.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
Career wise you seem to be on a roll. The cosmos seems to be encouraging you to think out of the box - ideas wise. You do best when you work at any job that has a cuttingedge approach. The more you put in, the more you get out. Romance may be on your mind, but unless you do something to make it happen, it may just stay that way, so do be proactive.
The Moon in your sign today gives you an extra opportunity for good vibes. You can ask for what you want with a greater chance of getting it. There’s the potential for a romantic date with a rather passionate twist if this appeals. There is also an opportunity to take your partner on a special night out - go for it and make it one to remember.
The money comes in and the money goes out - at least that’s how it must seem right now. You can be coming up with some super-hot ideas on how to make your resources go further, or best of all, how to earn more. The Moon in your travel and study zone suggests that you may benefit financially from taking a course or upgrading your skill set.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
You may need to focus on a problem associated with your home or family. Nothing major perhaps, but if you get on with it, the sooner it can be resolved. Still, you may feel put out, especially if you have lots on already that is far more interesting. You may be intrigued to explore ideas that could make your world a brighter, happier more interesting place.
Good friends and people you know in general may contribute to a special social event. You’re ready to have a good time, especially as fun is essential to keeping you feeling happy and nurtured. Things improve on the job front when you are focused and combine your efforts with those of others. Keep a daily to-do list to stay on bang of target.
You’re in an ideal position to clear up any unresolved issues, sort out problems and get a move on with your latest projects and plans. It’s the perfect time to reflect on your priorities and to follow your heart’s desire. The Moon in Virgo may encourage you to reflect on debts and other joint financial issues. Being clear about what you want is essential.
CANCER June 22 - July 22
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22
PISCES February 20 - March 20
You may be feeling edgy concerning financial matters, especially debts, taxes, the mortgage or other similar issues. There’s still time to sort things out and to find a way to resolve any ongoing issues. The sooner the better! The Moon in Virgo may encourage you to research an idea that seems very appealing. See if it’s as good as it seems.
The Moon in your social zone suggests that someone may have a suggestion which brings a social opportunity. There may also be romantic potential within this. If so, why not go with it and see what unfolds. The continuing focus on your home zone suggests that it may be time for a spring clean or some DIY. Clearing out some clutter can be cathartic.
You are a zodiac sign that tends to overlook a multitude of sins, especially when someone pulls at your heart strings. But today you may risk overlooking something that really shouldn’t be. You may want to forgive when you would be better to stand up for yourself. If you had done the same thing to them, would they be quite so forgiving?

Sport Kobe and resurgent Lakers silence Thunder By Jahmal Corner KOBE Bryant’s new pass-friendly approach helped the Los Angeles Lakers overcome the NBA-leading Oklahoma City Thunder 105-96 as they attempt to reverse a woeful start to the season. Bryant again flashed his all-round game with 21 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds, matching his seasonhigh in assists for a second straight game, and the host Lakers earned a second consecutive victory. “You have to figure out a way to win ball games, and that’s what I drew
from,” Bryant told reporters of his change in style. “It seems like we’re starting to come up with our identity and what we’re going to become.” Los Angeles trailed the Thunder 87-86 midway through the fourth but took control with a 9-2 run as Bryant engineered the triumph with a dazzling array shots and passes down the stretch. NBA-leading scorer Kevin Durant had a game-high 35 points for Oklahoma City but the Thunder, who entered the matinee game with the league’s best record, were forced to relinquish their recent control over the Lakers. Oklahoma City (34-11) beat Los An-
geles in their two prior meetings this season and eliminated them from last season’s playoffs by winning four of five games in the second round. In a balanced effort, six Lakers players reached double figures, including Steve Nash’s 17 points and Pau Gasol’s 16 points off the bench. “This kind of unity is exactly what we’ve been searching for and haven’t found until these last two games,” Gasol said. “Let’s see if we can keep it consistent.” Point guard Russell Westbrook had a tough day for the Thunder, making just 6 of 22 shots, but he did add 13 assists and nine rebounds.

49ers grounded after landing San Francisco aiming for a record-equalling Super Bowl By Simon Evans
IN BRIEF
THE San Francisco 49ers arrived in New Orleans on Sunday with head coach Jim Harbaugh hailing the team’s “focus and unity” as they aim for a record-equalling sixth Super Bowl triumph against the Baltimore Ravens. The NFC champions flew 1,900 miles (3,057 km) to the venue for the February 3 title game and after barely an hour in the ‘Big Easy’, Harbaugh started the first of six days of news conferences. Harbaugh, whose brother John coaches the Ravens, said his team had handled well, the week following the NFC championship win over the Atlanta Falcons. “Our team has been really focused. Focused on winning and the unity of the team, “ Harbaugh told reporters. “I think it is really genuine and I think it is the best focus on unity and winning that I’ve ever seen or been a part of,” he added. While the week-long build up to what is the mostwatched annual event in the United States contained plenty of distractions with a stream of media and publicity events, Harbaugh said his aim was to try and have a regular routine. “We try to make it like a normal week. We are in the city starting Monday like
it is the week leading up to a Sunday game, that’s our plan,” he said. “Our team enjoys the practice, the meetings and especially the competition. We will be gearing up for the competition of a championship game.” Harbaugh, competing in just his second season as a coach in the NFL, said he was looking forward to his first experience of the league’s biggest game. “Its unchartered waters for a rookie Super Bowl coach but that’s exciting too. We have a great thrill and great desire to be in unchartered waters - our coaches and players have always relished and thrived in that kind of environment,” he said. The 49ers have not appeared in a Super Bowl for 18 years but the franchise which was so strong in the 1980s, have won all five NFL title games that they have appeared in and another triumph would equal the Pittsburgh Steelers record of six victories. “There is a great 49ers history with our team and we are proud of that,” Harbaugh added. “I played against some of those teams that were dominant. The organisation has a tremendous history but this is new business and our team is focused on winning a championship.”
San Francisco are back in the NFL title match after an 18-year absence. Victory over the Baltimore Ravens will see the 49ers equal the Pittsburgh Steelers with six Super Bowls
First Kitzbuehel victory for Russian Grand Prix to be Hirscher as Austria celebrate held in Sochi in 2014 MARCEL Hirscher added a landmark trophy to his record and salvaged Austrian pride when he won the Kitzbuehel World Cup slalom. The overall World Cup holder and leader skied a perfect second run to clinch his fifth slalom victory of the season in a combined time of one minute 44.34 seconds. Victory was all the more important for Hirscher as it was his first win in the stronghold of Austrian skiing while he became the first skier from his country to win the Hahnenkamm slalom since Manfred Pranger eight years ago. The last Austrian to have won in Kitzbuehel was downhill specialist Klaus Kroell in 2009.
THE Russian Grand Prix - the country’s first Formula One race - will be held in Sochi in November 2014 despite delays in constructing the circuit, the city’s mayor said. “It will be held in November, after the (2014 Winter) Olympics,” Anatoly Pakhomov told reporters in Moscow. Last year local media reported, citing sources within the Russian Automobile Federation, that work on the $200million project had been stopped. Pakhomov, however, dismissed any doubts about the construction being completed on time. “The circuit’s construction is being closely monitored. Everything is going according to plan,” he said.
‘Doping doctor’ on trial A SPANISH doctor is going on trial accused of running one of the world’s largest sports doping rings. Dr Eufemiano Fuentes’ trial in Madrid comes nearly seven years after police raided his offices and seized some 200 bags of blood which were linked to a number of top cyclists. Dozens of cyclists have been called to testify as witnesses in the trial. Dr Fuentes, his sister and three former cycling coaches are charged with breaking public health laws. They could not be charged with doping-related crimes because Spain had no antidoping law at the time of their arrest. Prosecutors must prove that the defendants’ actions put the lives of the athletes at risk - something the defence is expected to deny. The case comes days after former seven time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong finally admitted to using banned drugs and blood doping during his cycling career. Spanish police carried out a series of raids in Madrid, Zaragoza and El Escorial in May 2006 as part of an investigation known as Operation Puerto. They found around 200 bags of blood or frozen plasma with labels that were believed to be code-names for Dr Fuentes’ clients - athletes who were allegedly benefiting from a highly-sophisticated doping programme.
Scotland name Brown captain for Six Nations SCOTLAND have named Kelly Brown as captain for their opening Six Nations match against England, Scottish Rugby said yesterday. “We believe Kelly has the qualities we’re looking for to captain Scotland,” interim head coach Scott Johnson said about the 30-year-old, who skippered Scotland during all three of their November Tests. Alasdair Strokosch has returned to the squad after his wife gave birth to put an end to Scottish concerns that he could miss the match against England on February 2.

Sport Emotional Azarenka emerges a champ again
Valiant Murray run ragged by relentless Djoko
By Simon Cambers VICTORIA Azarenka took everything the Australian Open could throw at her and emerged a champion. The Belarussian won her second successive title at Melbourne Park on Saturday with a 4-6 6-4 6-3 victory over China’s Li Na, bursting into tears as the emotion and stress of a fortnight came pouring out. “You have to go through rough patches to achieve great things,” Azarenka told Channel 7, the host broadcaster. “It’s been tough but I am happy here right now. There were new experiences for me in the last couple of days. I have to say thanks to my team for being so supportive. It was a victory that ensures she will stay at the top of the world rankings for at least a few more weeks but winning a second grand slam title will be of even more satisfaction. When Li turned her left ankle early in the second set, the match swung in Azarenka’s favour. When the Chinese fell again in the third and banged her head, it was getting surreal
Scot finds solace in good form despite loss By Simon Cambers ANDY Murray ran and ran until the skin on his feet came off and still it was not quite enough. The Briton’s hopes of winning his second successive grand slam title were ended by the resilience and defensive brilliance of world number one Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final. The Serb’s 6-7 7-6 6-3 6-2 victory on Sunday was Murray’s fifth defeat in six grand slam finals but having broken his duck at the US Open last September against Djokovic, the pain is unlikely to linger quite as long this time. Having played a five-set semi-final against Roger Federer and with a day less to recover than the Serb, a calm-looking Murray did well to save five break points in the first set and then played a superb tiebreak to move ahead. But his big chance came and went in the second game of the second set when he had 0-40 on the Djokovic serve and failed to convert. It was the turning point of the match.
“I was getting quite a few 0-15s, 15-30s, 0-30s and I couldn’t quite capitalise on my chances on his serve,” Murray told reporters. “That was a disappointing part. “I played a good second set. I created quite a few chances and didn’t quite get them. That was the difference.” The two 25-year-olds, born just a week apart, are separated by two places in the rankings but they showed again that when they face each other across the net, there is a hair’s breadth between them. Murray said he was a little stiff after his effort against Federer but of bigger concern was a nasty blister that appeared on his right foot. His ability to stop and change direction was affected and when you have a weakness, the last person you want to play is Djokovic. Having lifted his energy at the end of the second set to level the match, he ran Murray side to side, relentlessly, slowly increasing the pain. Still it took until the eighth game of the third set, two hours and 51 minutes into the match, for the
first break of serve as Murray netted a forehand. The gruelling rallies were beginning to take their toll and with Djokovic’s tail up, Murray was broken in the third game of the fourth. That, pretty much, was that. Murray denied that the blister had affected his chances and said he was more than happy with his efforts in reaching a third Australian Open final and his third straight grand slam final. “The last few months have been the best tennis of my life,” he said. “I made the Wimbledon final, won the Olympics, won the US Open and I was close here as well. It was close. “I know no one’s ever won the immediate slam after winning their first one. It’s not the easiest thing to do and I got extremely close. “This is the first time I’ve beaten Roger in a slam over five sets. I think I dealt with the situations and the ebbs and flows in that match well. “I felt much more comfortable on the court today than even I did at the US Open, so that has to be a positive.”

Disappointment: Andy Murray has lost five of the six grand slam finals he has contested
We’ve learned a lot, says Cook By Rory Dollard
Ian Bell hit 113 not out as England ended the one-day series with a win. India took the series 3-2
ENGLAND’S one-day squad departed India yesterday without the series win they came for but buoyed by an impressive victory in the final match. The group split in two directions, with nine players jetting to New Zealand to begin preparations for the forthcoming Twenty20 series and the remainder heading home. Each party will leave in considerably higher spirits after Sunday’s sevenwicket win in Dharamsala - a result set in motion by a disciplined bowling performance and delivered by Ian Bell’s pitch-perfect 113 not out. Captain Alastair Cook, who has a break before rejoining the side for the next one-day series, found plenty of bright spots to weigh against the series loss. Bell’s knock was the most obvious example, but he was also impressed with how others stood tall in the absence of key men such as Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott and
James Anderson. “We take a lot through to New Zealand from this month,” he said. “Belly’s hundred today was outstanding. It is easy sometimes to talk the talk but to go out there and do it like he did is something we can take a lot from. “We’ve learned a lot about other players too. James Tredwell has had an outstanding series: he just gets on with his business and produces the goods. “Steven Finn has bowled well again and Joe Root, who wasn’t in the original selection, has taken his chances very well. “It’s been a young squad out here and with the senior lads coming back now that adds a lot of competition for places.” Despite that assessment, Cook was in no mood to paper over the three successive defeats that cost England badly after a bright start to the trip. While a 3-2 loss represents decent progress when viewed against the backto-back whitewashes of England’s last two one-day trip to India, Cook is not
minded to settle for the tag of plucky losers. “We’re not really in it for ‘decent efforts’,” he said. “It was very important to end the series on a high but there’s always disappointment when you come to try to win a series then lose 3-2. “We’ve had a really good couple of years in ODIs, so of course we’re a little bit disappointed in the result of the series. “I said at the start of the tour that when we play to our potential we win games and when we have played well here we’ve put India under some pressure. “Obviously in a couple of games we didn’t do that.” Stuart Broad will link up with the Twenty20 side in Whangarei ahead of his delayed comeback from a heel injury. He was due to be in India for the fourth and fifth ODIs but was delayed by snow at Heathrow. Among the Englandbound group, Tim Bresnan (elbow) and Danny Briggs (sprained ankle) will head straight to the treatment room.
But the way the top seed dug herself out of a hole to clinch victory showed immense mental strength. In her semi-final against American teenager Sloane Stephens, Azarenka had incurred the wrath of everyone watching when she took a 10-minute double injury timeout just as Stephens was serving to stay in the match. Her attempts to explain it fell flat and when she was introduced to the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday, a number of jeers rang out. “I was expecting way worse, actually,” she told reporters. “But what can you do? You just have to go out and play your tennis. “It was definitely not easy with all the attention, with all the press around. But it was definitely a new experience for me that I think I handled quite well. “I can only learn from this experience and move forward and try to improve as a player and as a person, as well.” During the match, one fan called out ‘quiet please Azarenka’, in reference to her high-pitched grunting and the crowd was firmly behind Li. Her celebrations were subdued but when she sat down in her chair, the tears flowed uncontrollably. “This one is way more emotional than last year,” she said. “It’s going to be extra special for me, for sure.”

Sport Record for keeper Sirigu as lucky PSG go top
Messi hits four after Ronaldo scores hat-trick
By Julien Pretot
Spanish giants warm up for midweek Clasico By Iain Rogers LIONEL Messi hit four goals for leaders Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed a hat-trick for Real Madrid as the two teams warmed up for their midweek King’s Cup semi-final clash with crushing La Liga victories on Sunday. Messi took his league tally in 21 games this season to an incredible 33, and to 202 overall, in Barca’s 5-1 win at home to 10-man Osasuna while Ronaldo passed 300 club goals and now has 21 this term as Real thumped Getafe 4-0 at the Bernabeu. Barca’s return to winning ways after last weekend’s 3-2 reverse at Real Sociedad, their first defeat of the campaign, put them 11 points clear of secondplaced Atletico Madrid who lost 3-0 at Athletic Bilbao. Champions Real, whose hopes of a second straight title are effectively over with 17 matches to go, are four points behind Atletico in third spot. Malaga reclaimed Spain’s fourth Champions League qualification berth from Andalusian rivals Real Betis when the Qatar-owned club survived the second-half dismissal of Martin Demichelis
to win 3-2 at struggling Real Mallorca. Malaga have 35 points, eight behind Real, and lead Betis on goal difference. Rayo Vallecano continued to defy their modest status and are a point behind Betis in sixth place after they beat the Seville-based side 3-0. World Player of the Year Messi became the first player to score on 11 successive La Liga matchdays and, at 25, the youngest to reach 200 league goals. He has scored more goals on his own than all the other La Liga teams apart from Real and Atletico and is on course to smash the record for the most in a season (50) he set last term. “The important thing was to get through the match because when so much is being said about the ‘Clasico’ it’s not easy,” Messi told reporters. “We came out the same way as always and we achieved our goal.” Real, who host holders Barca in the King’s Cup semi-final first leg tomorrow, put a turbulent week behind them with Portuguese Ronaldo again on song. The buildup to the game was dominated by a report in Marca sports daily that said captains Iker Casil-
las and Sergio Ramos had threatened to leave unless coach Jose Mourinho was dismissed. Real president Florentino Perez called a news conference to deny the story, accusing the newspaper of lying, and the Spanish champions let their football do the talking on Sunday with a comfortable victory against their city rivals. Mourinho, who turned 50 on Saturday, left several key players out of his starting lineup including Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira while goalkeeper Casillas was missing after breaking a bone in his hand in midweek. Barca’s interim coach Jordi Roura, standing in for Tito Vilanova who is recovering after throat surgery, also rested Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas, the latter only coming on for Xavi late in the game. Real struggled to break through a determined Getafe defence in the first half but once Ramos had scrambled the ball into the net from a corner eight minutes after the break the home side turned the screw. Ronaldo struck three times in 10 minutes, the first his 300th club goal.

Joy for South Africa and Cape Verde after late drama By Mike Collett
Hosts South Africa made it through to the quarter-finals
A NIGHT of unrelenting emotion ended in joy for South Africa and Cape Verde Islands and sorrow for Morocco and Angola as the four Group A teams served up an African Nations Cup treat on Sunday. While hosts South Africa and debutants Cape Verde rejoiced, Morocco and Angola were left shattered because at various stages of the evening they seemed to be on the brink of a place in the quarter-finals. The occasion certainly got to the coaches too. Cape Verde’s Lucio Antunes burst into song during his postmatch news conference while Morocco’s Rachid Taoussi burst into tears. The two topsy-turvy games produced their own version of footballing musical chairs. South Africa’s 2-2 draw with Morocco at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban meant they topped the group with five points from three games, followed by Cape Verde in second place on the same to-
tal after a stunning 2-1 comeback win against Angola at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. Morocco went home unbeaten after three successive draws while Angola, who faced the prospect of being eliminated even if they had beaten Cape Verde and South Africa had lost, finished bottom with one point. The night began with the host nation top on four points followed by Cape Verde and Morocco on two and Angola with one. That changed when Morocco took the lead against South Africa in the 10th minute through Issam El Adoua and Angola went ahead against Cape Verde after 33. At that stage Morocco headed the group with South Africa in second place, Angola third and Cape Verde bottom. By the end of the night all four teams had changed positions several times over. While events were unfolding in Durban, the drama was beginning in Port Elizabeth as Angola went ahead when Nando diverted a flick from Amaro into his own goal.
Despite the fact Angola were winning and South Africa were losing at that stage, if the results had stayed the same Angola would have been out and South Africa in. Morocco, who had allowed South Africa to equalise through May Mahlangu after 71 minutes, went back in front and top of the group again when they forged 2-1 ahead with eight minutes to go. Over in Port Elizabeth, Cape Verde equalised against Angola though Gege but that goal did not materially change much - it just meant that Cape Verde might finish on three points and Angola on two. But what happened next changed everything as South Africa equalised against Morocco with four minutes to play.

PARIS St Germain were fortunate to reclaim top spot in Ligue 1 after an Aurelien Chedjou own goal secured a 1-0 home win over Lille on Sunday. Salvatore Sirigu also beat Bernard Lama’s PSG record of 697 minutes without conceding a goal as he kept a seventh clean sheet in succession in the league. Lille were unluckily denied a first-half ‘goal’ and also hit the woodwork as PSG, who have 45 points from 22 games and lead Lyon on goal difference, struggled throughout. Carlo Ancelotti’s men broke through in the 68th minute when keeper Steve Elana let an Ezequiel Lavezzi cross slip from his hands and the ball went in off Chedjou’s chest. Lille thought they had gone in front after 34 minutes but Nolan Roux was deemed offside even though the striker appeared to be in a non-active position. PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic benefited from a bad clearance in the opening half and his low shot from just outside the box smashed against Elana’s right post. Thiago Motta was replaced by Marco Verratti 10 minutes into the second half after picking up a suspected thigh injury as PSG continued to toil. Florent Balmont then found himself in a great position for Lille but his pass to Dimitri Payet was cleared by Sylvain Armand. While Sirigu looked sharp, parrying Payet’s fierce shot from just inside the area, Elana’s clumsiness eventually cost his team. Tulio De Melo’s strike against the post in the 83rd minute only served to add to Lille’s frustration. Earlier, Bordeaux produced a trademark defensive display to move up to fifth as Henri Saivet’s second-half goal earned a 1-0 win at Nice. Saivet found the back of the net shortly before the hour to put Bordeaux, who kept a clean sheet for the 12th time in 22 league games, on 35 points, 10 behind PSG. Nice, who suffered their first home league defeat since August, dropped to sixth and trail Bordeaux on goal difference. The home side enjoyed lots of possession but Argentine striker Dario Cvitanich was kept quiet by the Bordeaux defence. Bordeaux broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when Saivet was set up by Jaroslav Plasil and he fired past David Ospina with a cross-shot. Five minutes later teenager Neal Maupay’s canny lob landed on Cedric Carrasso’s bar as Nice pushed hard for an equaliser.

Sport TITLE RIVALS UNITED AND CITY RESUME FIGHT FOR PREMIER LEAGUE
Manduca double keeps APOEL title hopes alive By Nemanja Bjedov
Aston Villa and Newcastle meet tonight in a relegation dogfight that neither would have expected to be embroiled in
Pressure is on Villa and Toon in basement battle By Justin Palmer WHILE Manchester United and title rivals Manchesater City resume their slugfest for Premier League silverware, Aston Villa and Newcastle United meet tonight in a relegation dogfight that neither would have expected to be embroiled in. Both are mired in deep trouble and staring anxiously downwards at the clubs behind them. For beleaguered managers Paul Lambert and Alan Pardew, a victory cannot come soon enough. Villa languish one place above the drop zone, a point ahead of Reading, after one win from their last nine league games. Newcastle sit one spot above Villa and have managed just two wins in their last 14. Two Cup exits to lower divi-
sion opponents in the space of a week has left Villa’s already shredded confidence in tatters. Scot Lambert was tempted away from Premier League rivals Norwich during the close season to help revive Villa’s fortunes after a 16th place finish last season. But the Midlands club struggled from the off, defeat in their first two games setting the tone for a first half of the season that reached a low in late December with an embarrassing 8-0 defeat at Chelsea, followed by a 4-0 home loss to Tottenham and a 3-0 reverse against Wigan. That was until last week when Villa’s hopes of a Wembley Capital One (League) Cup final appearance were extinguished by fourth-tier Bradford, followed by an FA Cup defeat at Championship (second division) Millwall.
Newcastle also had high expectations after an unexpected fifth place last season. But the northeast club, hindered by injuries to key players, have struggled. Top scorer Demba Ba’s departure for Chelsea earlier this month has also left a shortage of firepower, with the onus now on Papiss Cisse to consistently deliver. Pardew’s remedy has been to look across the English Channel to France, adding to the Gallic flavour at Newcastle by signing Mathieu Debuchy, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Yoan Gouffran, Massadio Haïdara and Moussa Sissoko. “It was obvious last weekend against Reading (2-1 home defeat) that we needed to make changes very, very quickly and we have done that,” Pardew said. Manchester City have the chance to narrow the gap on
United to two points, albeit for 24 hours, when they travel south to face bottom side Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Roberto Mancini’s men have hit top form, taking 18 points out of 21, but will be missing captain Vincent Kompany who is out with a calf injury. United, who like City eased into the FA Cup fifth round at the weekend, host 15thplaced Southampton at Old Trafford tomorrow. The south coast side, back in the top-flight this season, were minutes away from beating United at home in September until Robin van Persie scored twice in three minutes at the death to win 3-2. In other matches, Arsenal host Liverpool at the Emirates on Wednesday while third-placed Chelsea visit Reading.
Brazil’s first World Cup stadium holds matches By Pedro Fonseca
Brazil legend Ronaldo poses with the 2014 mascot
THE Arena Castelao, the first of Brazil’s 2014 World Cup stadiums to be completed, held its first matches on Sunday - a doubleheader in the northeastern Copa do Nordeste. But despite the inspiration of having World Cup record goalscorer Ronaldo in the stands of the stadium opened by President Dilma Rousseff last month the teams managed only one goal to mark the occasion. Fortaleza and Sport drew 0-0 before Bahia beat Ceara 1-0 with a goal from former Brazil and Manchester
United midfielder Kleberson. The matches were preceded by a ceremony attended by Ronaldo, Brazil’s sports Minister Aldo Rebelo, FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke and Jose Maria Marin, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation. Sunday’s matches in the Gaucho championship in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul were cancelled after the tragic deaths of more than 200 people in a fire at a night club in the city of Santa Maria. The state’s top clubs Internacional and Gremio posted messages on their
websites declaring three days of mourning and put their flags at half mast in their stadiums. The main attraction was to have been former Brazil coach Dunga’s first game in charge of Internacional at Caxias. Brazilian champions Fluminense drew 1-1 with Botafogo in the season’s first major ‘classico’ in the Carioca (Rio) championship. Brazil ace Neymar saved Santos from defeat with a last minute penalty, his fourth goal in three matches, for a 1-1 draw with Bragantino in the Paulista (Sao Paulo) championship.
GUSTAVO Manduca’s second half double gave APOEL a 2-0 victory over Olympiakos at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia on Sunday afternoon as their chase of leaders Anorthosis continues. “It was a difficult match for us, but I believe the final result is fair. We were a bit anxious at the beginning but this is a very important victory and well deserved,” said APOEL coach Ivan Jovanovic. “The players understood the importance of the match after our Cup exit.” Manduca, who has ten goals so far this season, agreed with his coach: “It was a very important match for us after being eliminated from the Cup. We wanted to win for our fans and show them that we appreciate their support. Every match is like a final for us and as we have three matches against Anorthosis still to come, it is possible to turn the tables in our favour.” APOEL’s top scorer Aldo Adorno’s season came to an early end though as the Paraguayan striker fractured his left leg in the 35th minute. He was taken directly to hospital where he underwent surgery and he will need at least four to five months to fully recover.
Adorno is currently leading the league’s top scorers list with 13 goals. “We have not had many things to be happy about recently and Adorno’s injury is certainly no exception,” Jovanovic added. Elsewhere, on Saturday afternoon, Anorthosis beat Omonia 3-1 at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia with all four goals coming in the second half. Barak Yitzhaki scored twice and Jan Rezek made it 3-0 with his 12th goal of the season before being sent off five minutes from time, while Andre Alves claimed a consolation goal for the hosts. Ethnikos Achnas defeated AEP Paphos 3-0, while Apollon failed to break down Enosis Neon Paralimni’s defense and had to settle for a goalless draw. Chando saved AEK from an embarrassment as his goal, two minutes into injury time, helped the Larnaca side remain unbeaten against Ayia Napa away from home in a 1-1 draw. Jorge Costa’s AEL successfully built on their midweek shock victory over APOEL in the Cup with a 1-0 win over Nea Salamina in Larnaca on Sunday afternoon. In the final match of Round 19 last night, Alki and Doxa Katokopias played out a 2-2 draw at the GSZ Stadium in Larnaca.

Wizard of Oz: Novak Djokovic became the first man in the Open era to win three straight Australian Open titles when he beat Britain’s Andy Murray in the final
Contented Djokovic shows the fun side of a sweet life By Greg Stutchbury WITH the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup sitting a few centimetres away from his left hand, Novak Djokovic was a contented man at his post-match media conference. He should have been. The world number one had just beaten Andy Murray in the Australian Open final to claim his fourth title at Melbourne Park, his third in succession and the sixth grand slam title in his career. “It’s amazing. I’m just trying to embrace this moment and enjoy it as much as I can and see where tomorrow brings me,” he told reporters after the four-set victory. “I mean, 25 years old and I won six grand slams and have a lot of trophies. “I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and to succeed.” Djokovic’s success on Rod Laver Arena is unprecedented in the professional era, something the Serb was well aware of given the tough nature of professional sport. “There are so many athletes, professional tennis players around the world and it’s such a global sport, they want to be the best in what they do,” he added. “They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. “Generally I’m aware of the fact that it’s an incredible trip for me, you know, being a professional tennis player.” Long considered the ‘Djoker’ on Tour, his natural frivolity was reined in as he tried to fulfil his promise. The hilarious on-court impersonations disappeared, but since he broke the
Roger Federer-Rafa Nadal duopoly in 2011 by winning three grand slam titles, his exuberant character had reappeared. At this year’s Australian Open, he was caught on closed circuit television ‘Gangnam Style’ dancing with security staff and teaching young players some break dance moves. Just minutes after his semi-final victory over David Ferrer he also appeared on court with a doctor’s lab coat and stethoscope during a legends doubles match to provide ‘medical attention’ to Henri Leconte. “I’m just trying to play this game with 100 per cent of devotion, love, passion, and fun also,” he added. “I mean, what else can you do but to be happy and try to bring that joy to the other people around, especially in the tournaments?” Djokovic, who posed for several photos with exuberant fans after the final as he made his way to media commitments with the trophy, also provided a surprise for the assembled reporters. “Don’t you take those chocolates,” he smilingly admonished a tennis official in the media conference room. “There is a little tradition that we try to initiate in World Tour Finals in London, the end of the year, the last press conference, and give chocolate to all the people who were in the press. “I want to start the year with the same thing, if you allow me. Let’s keep it sweet.” Like his life right now. VALIANT MURRAY RUN RAGGED PAGE 29
HE romance of the FA Cup was rekindled on a weekend when football’s goliaths had never looked so vulnerable but the string of top-flight second XIs who fell or stumbled said much about where the competition now ranks. Staid and predictable and in danger of becoming little more than a sideshow, the FA Cup was given the equivalent of life-saving surgery as Liverpool, Tottenham, Norwich, Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa were dumped out by lower league clubs. Those who fell, however, made wholesale changes, choosing to rest top players and blood inexperienced youngsters with important midweek Premier League games uppermost in the minds of under-pressure managers. QPR boss Harry Redknapp described the 4-2 defeat by third-tier Milton Keynes Dons as “disgusting” but he retained only two players from the side that drew with West Ham the weekend before. Norwich’s elimination was less excusable. The Canaries enjoy the relative comfort of a seven-point cushion over the bottom three but still made six changes against Luton Town before becoming the first top-flight side in 24 years to lose to a minor league club. The reality of the modern English game is the Premier League and Champions League are financial behemoths and clubs are less interested in silverware than keeping their noses in the money trough. If top-flight survival is threatened or there is even an outside chance of reaching the promised land of a top-four place and Champions League qualification, then the FA Cup takes a back seat. Liverpool reached the FA Cup final and won its poorer sibling, the League Cup, last season but still sacked manager Kenny Dalglish after their stumbling league form ended in an eighth-place finish. Dalglish was later quoted as saying that not even an FA Cup victory would have kept him in his job. It was perhaps with those
Not good enough: seven-time winners Liverpool were beaten 3-2 by third-tier Oldham Athletic words ringing in his ears that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers made five changes to his side at third-tier Oldham on Sunday including dropping captain Steven Gerrard to the bench.
ROUGHED UP Liverpool were roughed up 3-2 by Oldham in a defeat that hinted at the fact that cultured Premier League sides had forgotten how to deal with the old-fashioned high ball into the box, part of the staple diet of lower division clubs. Rodgers then chose to point the finger at those he had drafted in. “I was disappointed with the young players. We’re trying to give them experience and let them see what it’s like to play for Liverpool,” he told reporters. Liverpool are seventh in the league but it seems the outside chance they have of finishing in the top four made changes inevitable. The seven-time FA Cup winners were not alone in con-
centrating on their Champions League potential. Tottenham made five alterations for a 2-1 defeat at second-tier Leeds United while Chelsea also changed five players as they twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at third-tier Brentford. Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson said the world’s oldest knockout competition was now just a shop window for players on the fringes of squads, an opportunity for individualism to replace the team ethic embraced by lower league giant-killers. “What a sad sign of the times it is that the wages in the Premier League are so fantastic that for many players top-flight football is the be-all and end-all,” he wrote in the Daily Mirror.
