Bailout aims met says government Spokesman reiterates there is no question of a deposits haircut By George Psyllides
T
HE government said yesterday its objectives were achieved regarding the bailout, after EU finance ministers agreed to bail out Cyprus while a controversial money laundering audit will be carried out with the participation of a European committee and the Central Bank of Cyprus. Eurozone finance ministers pledged on Monday to agree a bailout for Cyprus by the end of March, but details of how the rescue will be financed were yet to be sorted out. Officials however did not remove the deposit haircut option from the table, prompting Nicosia to once more reject such an intention and censure its EU partners. “There is no question of a haircut on deposits, full stop,” government spokesman Christos Stylianides said, suggesting that the lingering vagueness helped serve other expediencies. Cyprus managed however to convince its partners for a money-laundering audit to be carried out jointly by a private firm and the Council of Europe experts MONEYVAL, under the supervision of the Central Bank. In February, the Eurogroup said a private-sector firm should be appointed to assess the Cypriot banking system’s compliance with anti-money laundering regulations – a proposal rejected by Cyprus.
Stylianides described Monday’s decision as a big achievement by Sarris, who had been under intense pressure throughout the meeting. The spokesman said Cyprus was now entering the final phase and there was a very serious probability of having a final agreement by the end of this month. “This is very important because it finally gives a clear timeframe and the Cypriot economy stops being in insecurity and uncertainty,” Stylianides said. European Commission Vice-President Olli Rehn said the agreement on money laundering was an important step forward. “In our view, this review is the most convincing means of effectively addressing persistent concerns about the rigorous implementation of this framework,” he told a news conference on Monday night. Senior troika officials were expected on the island today for talks with President Nicos Anastasiades and the Central Bank Governor. Meanwhile, other troika officials are on the island to gather information about semi-government organisations (SGOs) which could be privatised if the public debt is deemed unsustainable. “It was a given… that the troika would complete a review of all SGOs,” Stylianides said of a preliminary agreement between lenders and the previous ad

Life on the run ends for fugitive jailed after 20 years A SECURITY guard who spent almost 20 years as a fugitive in the US was today jailed for five years after admitting one of Britain’s most audacious thefts. Eddie Maher, known as Fast Eddie, stole £1.2 million from the Securicor van he was driving and fled. The 57year-old from Essex was arrested in Missouri in February last year after living under various aliases, including Stephen King. He was deported to Britain last May. He had been wanted by Suffolk police since the Securicor van disappeared outside Lloyds Bank in Felixstowe on January 22, 1993. While his colleagues entered the bank, Maher drove off with 50 bags of notes and coins.
By the time police tracked his van, he had vanished. A reward of up to £100,000 was put on his head. Investigations were carried out in Cyprus and the West Indies after reported sightings but the trail soon went cold. In fact, he built a new life with partner Deborah Brett and their son Lee, who was three at the time of the theft. Yesterday Maher, grey-haired, balding and dressed in a suit, appeared at Southwark crown court, where he entered a last-minute guilty plea after being expected to fight the case. Police revealed details of property investments they say he funded from the proceeds of the crime, including a
$120,000 Colorado home bought with cash six months after the theft. Later Maher built an 80-acre ranch in Colorado before moving around the states of Florida, Wisconsin, Texas, Pennsylvania and Minnesota. He grew a beard and wore over-sized spectacles to change his appearance. Maher’s life unravelled when his son, Lee King’s, disgruntled ex-wife Jessica King contacted US authorities to tell them he was a wanted man, the court heard. Brett, 47, Maher’s sister Margaret Francis, 64, and a 54-year-old man from Woodford Green are on bail after being arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit theft.

Outgoing ambassador gets Man sentenced to life awarded for peace efforts for murder of jeweller HOUSE President Yiannakis Omirou yesterday awarded the House Silver Medal to the outgoing Slovak ambassador Anna Turenicova as an expression of thanks for her work towards peace efforts in Cyprus. Presenting the award to the ambassador who leaves after six years on the job, Omirou expressed Cyprus’ “deep appreciation for (her) invaluable work in Cyprus… particularly in promoting our bilateral parliamentary relations, with such grace, efficiency and dedication. “On behalf of all Members of the House Representatives and myself, I thank you wholeheartedly for the excellent mediator you have been throughout these years and for the genuine effort and enthusiasm you demonstrated in the conduct of your country’s diplomatic relations with Cyprus,” Omirou said. Slovakia has been facilitating meetings between Greek and Turkish Cypriot politi-
cians for over twenty years, since 1989 when the communities approached the ambassador of what was then Czechoslovakia, Emile Kedlusek, leading to a meeting in Prague in the same year. Deputies from both communities have been attending monthly meetings hosted by the Slovak embassy in Nicosia’s buffer zone since 1989. “The support of (the Slovak Republic) has been unwavering and I wish to express my gratitude for this, but also for your personal contribution in our quest to reunify our island, restore justice and guarantee the human rights of all our citizens,” Omirou told Turenicova. “I am very happy and proud that my country is helping your country because as they say ‘friends in need are friends indeed’,” Turenicova said yesterday, adding she would cherish the award just as she cherished the friendship between the two countries.
PAPHOS Criminal Court yesterday sentenced a 44-yearold auto body repair technician to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of a 67-year-old jeweller who was found dead in Paphos’ Petra tou Romiou in October last year. Costas Palaskas from Skoulli village near Paphos’ Polis Chrysochous was sentenced to life for the murder of Michalakis Demetriou from Larnaca, who was shot dead on October 31 last year. He was also given 18 years for armed robbery. Both sentences will run concurrently. Demetriou was killed by two shots – to the head and chest – fired at close range with a shotgun. He was found outside his car on a dirt road north of Petra tou Romiou. Demetriou drove from Larnaca with €17,000 to purchase jewellery but the money was not on his body, the court heard. Palaskas bought a pre-paid mobile phone sim card in
Polis Chrysochous which he used to talk with Demetriou and lead him to the dirt road where he shot him and took his money, the court heard. Data from Palaskas’ mobile phone placed him at the time and place of the murder and a drop of blood on Palaskas’ trousers was identified as that of the victim, state broadcaster CyBC said. The court heard that Palaskas, a father of three daughters, had outstanding debts to people which he started paying off in the days after the murder and before his arrest, often with €100 notes. During a remand hearing for Palaskas, investigators said they had secured statements saying that the victim was distantly related to Palaskas from whom he had previously purchased jewellery. CyBC said that while Demetriou’s family felt vindicated by the decision, Palaskas’ family was crying when the court handed out the sentence.
A 35-year-old woman was yesterday committed for trial at the Criminal Court in connection with kidnapping an 18-month-old boy in Limassol last month. The woman, who is the aunt by marriage of toddler Stavros Styllis, will face charges including kidnap and conspiracy to commit felony. The woman was released on bail until her trial, which is scheduled to start on April 4. Prosecutors had asked for her to be remanded in custody, arguing that there was a risk of flight. The defence rejected the argument, pointing out that the woman was married – to the brother of the toddler’s father – and the mother of three underage children. The defence said so far there was nothing linking her with the kidnap, as evidence that the child’s DNA was found in her car has not yet been submitted. The court released the woman on a €100,000 bail and ordered her to surrender all her travel documents. She is to be put on a stop list and will have to report to a police station three times a week. The boy’s disappearance from the home of his grandparents sparked a massive search by Cypriot police, British bases police, the National Guard and Civil Defence, Ypsonas municipal workers, and members of the public last month. The publicity eventually led to the boy’s accidental discovery at a cemetery on
Toddler Stavros Stylli the afternoon of the same day. A widow who visited Ypsonas cemetery to light a candle for her husband found the little boy crying outside a shed, eight hours after he had been taken. It has also been revealed that, in an incident in December, little Stavros had almost eaten some pudding containing broken glass and other harmful substances but police ruled out any link between the two incidents. The boy’s father had told police that his sister-in-law was the only member of the family he did not get along with and that he had constantly argued with her since 2003 when she married his brother. He also claimed that after the birth of Stavros and his twin sister he received messages from a withheld phone number threatening to harm his children.

Home CYPRUS TODAY Man teargassed A MAN used teargas to try and steal €19,500 from a supermarket owner in Nicosia on Monday. The 48-year-old supermarket owner told police while he was in a Eurobank car park in Makedonitisa, an unknown person opened the car door and sprayed teargas at him. He was planning to deposit €19,500 in the bank. In an attempt to defend himself, he kicked the perpetrator twice with his foot in the chest. He then managed to get into the bank while the attempted robber fled. He also said he noticed another person watching the attack. According to police, a fire that broke out in a car parked outside a block of flats at around 9.30pm on Monday in Engomi may be connected to this case.
Cap on milk prices renewed NEW Commerce Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis has renewed a price cap on the price of milk, meaning it cannot be sold for more than €1.41 a litre. The wholesale and retail price of milk was first decreed by his predecessor in January. That decree was due to expire today and has now been renewed for up to a further 45 days. The wholesale price remains at €1.32 per litre for wholesale, including VAT. “We have decided to extend the previous government’s price cap to ensure the consumer is not burdened with market changes,” Lakkotrypis said after meeting with milk producers and pasteurisers.
Gives time to normalise milk buying chain Previous commerce minister Neoclis Sylikiotis issued a price cap decree after cattle farmers raised raw milk prices by four cents a litre and announced there would be an additional increase of 1.8 cents as of April 1 because of the rising cost of animal feed. This prompted pasteurisers to announced they would need to raise wholesale milk prices by nine cents per litre. Sylikiotis responded by fixing prices to “prevent knockon hikes” saying that he considered the nine cent rise “irrational”. New minister Lakkotrypis
said the cattle farmers’ association (POA) was considering rescinding their original intention to raise the price of raw milk and that pasteurisers had committed to also not raising the price of wholesale milk in the event that POA did not raise their prices. “Although it is not part of the government’s philosophy to set prices and intervene heavily on the market, we thought it would be useful to extend the (price cap) to see how we can normalise the milk-buying chain,” Lakkotrypis said. The commerce minister
has the right to set a ceiling on the prices of bread, water and milk. Over 70 per cent of Cyprus’ cattle farmers are part of the cattle farmers’ association (POA), organised as a limited liability company with exclusive agreements with some of Cyprus’ major supermarkets. A new EU regulation that Cyprus should have implemented by early October states that milk producer groups in small markets – including Cyprus – can only represent 45 per cent of total production. It is understood that POA
Kasoulides meets ambassadors FOREIGN MINISTER Ioannis Kasoulides held separate meetings with the ambassadors of Germany, Israel and Egypt yesterday as part of a series of contacts arranged since assuming his post last Friday. According to the foreign ministry, the meetings were part of a concerted effort to enhance consultations and improve coordination on foreign policy issues. Kasoulides exchanged views with the three ambassadors on bilateral issues, and issues of mutual interest. He informed them of the new government’s foreign policy priorities and assured them that Cyprus looks forward to maintaining excellent relations with the three countries represented in Nicosia, as well as to further deepen and expand bilateral cooperation. The ambassadors wished the new minister every success in his new position.
Men sought TWO men are being sought by the police in connection with the attempted murder of a 26-year-old man, illegal possession and transportation of explosives, and causing gunshot damages to a car on February 25 in Limassol. Michael Constantinou, alias Voukkas, 22, and Cleopa Paulou, alias Kipoui, 23, from Limassol are the men in question. They tried to intercept the car on the Moutayiaka Limassol road, using two SUVs. Shots were fired at the car but the 26-year-old and a passenger, 50, managed to escape.
Car torched A CAR was torched in Larnaca yesterday, during the early hours of the morning. The police said the fire that broke out at around 12.40am and seems to be an arson attack according to investigations. The car had been parked outside the owner’s home for the last three months. The fire caused damage to the car’s paint and bumper. The owner’s son saw and put out the fire.
is under investigation by the commission for the protection of competition. Lakkotrypis said that so far the milk price ceiling has been observed without mishaps, however the consumers and quality of life unions have previously criticised the cap for setting the ceiling too high. When the cap was set, supermarkets were selling a litre of semi-skimmed milk from €1.16 to €1.32, although bakeries and kiosks could sell it for as much as €1.40, close to the cap threshold. Cypriot consumers pay for the most expensive milk in the European Union, with prices also rising faster than elsewhere in the EU.

SUPPORT On Monday, Kasoulides met the British high commissioner and French ambassador, as part of efforts to shore up support for Cyprus’ application to NATO’s anteroom, the Partnership for Peace (PfP). Kasoulides said he wanted to give the message that Cyprus would be a consistent and reliable EU partner. On the day of his election on February 24, President Nicos Anastasiades announced his intention to submit a Cyprus application for membership to the PfP programme which is designed to create trust between the North Atlantic security organisation and other states in Europe and the former Soviet Union. Cyprus is the only EU state not a member of either NATO or PfP. The newly-appointed minister will visit Athens today following an invitation by Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos. The two ministers are expected to discuss aspects of cooperation between the two countries on bilateral issues, the Cyprus problem, the eurozone crisis and the Cypriot government’s intention to apply for membership of the PfP.

Breakfast: child’s right Bishop slams education ministry for not doing enough By Maria Gregoriou THE bishop of Limassol attacked the ministry of education yesterday for not doing enough to help poor families and hungry school children. “I do not want to thank the ministry of education for its help as none was seen,” Bishop Athanasios said. He was speaking during an event to give breakfast to 2,000 children in Limassol. He criticised the ministry of education for its lack of practical help and expressed the hope the new minister, Kyriacos Kenevezos, “will not follow the path which the ministry has taken until now. “The ministry of education only held meetings, sent letters and asked us to attend functions, but in practice, I saw nothing,” he said. “The Bishopric made its words actions, but this is the state’s job. I hope that it will be able to undertake this work, stand tall and help the people,” he added. Kenevezos himself said the state should be the main body to overcome problems caused by the economic crisis. “The words ‘needy schoolchildren’ should be removed from our dictionaries and our every day talks. In a state that was characterised by its prosperity in earlier years, we must see how, and in what ways we can escape the crisis. In this way the state will be the main and most substantial pillar in solving such problems,” he said. “This collaborated effort aims at not leaving any child in Limassol without breakfast. We want to pass on the message that even during hard economic times, people can still survive,” said General Manager of Carrefour Thierry Noyer. “Knowing the circumstances that economic pressure creates and the agony that they put Cypriot citizens through, we are committed to contributing in any way we can towards a better tomorrow,” he said.
“The experiences that our country is currently facing are very painful. Children go to school without breakfast and whole families are being driven to community markets and soup kitchens. Under the weight of such hard times, and wanting to protect the right of each child to have breakfast at least, we proceed towards this entirely humanitarian action, with the hope to contribute further in the future,” Dinos Ellinas of the Limassol Schools Inspectorate said. The project ‘Breakfast is a child’s right. For adults, it is an obligation,’ is a collaboration between Carrefour supermarkets, the Limassol Bishopric and the Limassol district school board. It will provide breakfast on a daily basis to 2,000 needy schoolchildren, in 90 schools, in six municipalities
of Limassol for the current and following school years. Carrefour will provide 496,000 sandwiches and bottles of water. About nine tonnes of ham, twelve tons of cheese, three tonnes of butter and eleven tonnes of cucumbers will be used. The Limassol Bishopric will provide the space where volunteers will prepare the breakfasts. The school district board will provide vehicles by which the breakfasts will be transported to the schools. The transportation cost will be covered by the Limassol cooperative savings bank. Charity events will be held during Easter, Christmas and September of this and next year, where clothes and shoes will be given. The scheme is not the only one currently in operation. The Shacolas Group also
prepares breakfasts and delivers them to drop-off points in Nicosia, Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca. Representatives of the education ministry then deliver the supplies to primary schools.
COMPARING various services in Cyprus used to mean getting your pen and pad out and making a host of phone calls, but that has all been simplified with a new website, www. compareservices.com.cy. The site aims to provide transparency, competition, simplicity and valid and timely information to the public on a number of services. Visitors can compare different banking charges including interest rates, current account charges, building loans, credit cards and student loans of the major banks on the island. Information is also provided for different landline and internet charges as well as mobile phone pay-as-you-go or contract charges. The site offers visitors the chance to compare the prices for most of the private primary and secondary schools in the five districts as well as higher education too. Although there is no competition for water and electricity on the island,
the site offers people the chance to study water and electricity bill breakdowns. “Compare Services hopes to fill the void of transparency which exists in the Cyprus market and will simultaneously be the prime tool that consumers can use to compare services,” a statement on the website says. “By using user-friendly tools, free of charge, visitors to the site can compare different products and charges of different services,” it adds. “This innovation makes our company a pioneer in a field which we are committed to operate in consistently and continuously to improve the comparison services we offer.” The site also offers links to the Cyprus Consumers’ Association, the Consumer’s Union, the consumer protection agency and the commission for the protection of competition. There are also links to European competition and consumer websites, and consumer organisations as well as Euractiv and EU Business news portals.

Ex foreign minister back on stand at Mari trial Denies that powers of recall improve to help his defence
New Defence Minister Fotis Fotiou at the National Guard headquarters yesterday
Minister: new defence strategy needed By Stefanos Evripidou IN THESE times of austerity, Cyprus needs a new defence doctrine, one that is called ‘smart defence’, Defence Minister Fotis Fotiou said yesterday.
Speaking during a visit to the National Guard command headquarters, where he was briefed by the NG chief Lieutenant General Stylianos Nasi on Cyprus’ defensive strategy, Fotiou said: “I am now convinced that we should redesign our defence
strategy based on the new developments in the region.” The minister referred specifically to the geostrategic developments in the region, and Turkish threats and challenges to Cyprus’ sovereign right to exploit its natural resources.
“And we need to introduce a new doctrine, a doctrine which will be particularly helpful during a period of economic crisis. This new doctrine is smart defence, as it is known internationally, where we will have to replace our traditional equipment and methods of operation with smart equipment, modern methods of operation for the NG,” he said. The government’s main goal remains to upgrade the armed forces to respond to the new developments, he said. When asked how the state could afford that, Fotiou said: “We all have to understand that we’re going through difficult days with regards to the economy, but on the other hand, we must weigh up the value of upgrading the NG and as I have noted, the situation is different. “The threats we’re getting in our Exclusive Economic Zone regarding our sovereign rights are almost daily,” he said, adding that in a few weeks he would submit before cabinet a specific proposal on the next steps forward. The new government has pledged to apply for membership of NATO’s Partnership for Peace programme. Asked about reducing military service for conscripts, Fotiou said the government was not against it in principle but that any such move would have to be done in a way which did not impact upon the fighting ability of the NG.
By Elias Hazou FORMER foreign minister Marcos Kyprianou said yesterday he never recommended an Iranian munitions cargo be sold, but neither did he oppose or quash the idea. Kyprianou, the first of six defendants to take the stand in the ongoing Mari trial, was being cross-examined by the state prosecution. The questions revolved around a February 7, 2011 meeting at the Defence Ministry, one of a series held to discuss the status of the cargo seized from a Syriabound ship in January 2009. The prosecution produced the minutes of the meeting, according to which Kyprianou told the others that the United Nations were favourably disposed toward the sale of the cargo, the proceeds of which would be deposited in a bank. But the defendant denied this, saying the suggestion came from someone else. What he had proposed is that the cargo be inspected before any action was taken. “The minutes of meetings are recorded by human beings, and are not the Gospel,” Kyprianou said. The prosecution next cited what it claimed were the minutes of a closed-doors session of the House Defence Committee that took place after the Mari explosion of July 11, 2011. There, quizzed by MPs, Kyprianou reportedly said
that by February of 2011 Syria had softened its stance with regard to the possibility of the cargo being sold. Iran, however, continued to lay claim to the cargo. According to the same minutes kept at the House Defence Committee hearing, at the Defence Ministry meeting of February 7 Kyprianou told the others: “Destroy the problematic [explosives] cargo and sell the rest. A decision has been taken and the matter is closed.” The prosecution put it to Kyprianou that his comments at the two events were contradictory, bringing into question his credibility. At that point Kyprianou’s lawyers objected, arguing that the minutes of the House Defence Committee had been sealed and that they did not have access to them. Pressing on, the prosecution put it to Kyprianou that the only occasion on which he was telling the truth was during his testimony before an independent commission of inquiry convened after the Mari disaster. Kyprianou had told that inquiry that he could not recall everything that was said, and by whom, at the series of meetings held to discuss the cargo. “But today, you can recall what was said, because it suits your defence,” the prosecutor said. “I disagree,” the defendant responded. Kyprianou’s cross-examination continues today.
Scientists look to boost vulture population TWELVE scientists are currently meeting in Limassol as part of ongoing efforts to protect Griffon vultures on the island. The international conference they are attending starts today and will continue until Friday at the Elias Beach Hotel in Limassol. The conference has been organised by BirdLife Cyprus, as part of an ongoing project to increase the population of Griffon vultures on the island. The scientists will compare best practices on how to monitor and keep a record of numbers of Griffon Vultures. They will also help form a plan and protocol for their protection. Birdlife’s GYPAS Griffon protection project started in September 2011 and is a 24 month programme. It imported five Griffon Vultures from Crete on January
31, bringing the total number of the population up to eleven. The project aims to create public awareness and educate citizens about how to protect the biggest bird on the island. Further actions are building a new holding cage at Limnatis, building two new feeding areas and extending a cage in Ayios Yiannis in Paphos. The project is financed 80 per cent by the European Union and 20 per cent by the National Funds of Greece and Cyprus. The Griffon Vulture population began to decrease in 1950, due to an increase in agriculture and poaching. The importance of the ‘GYPAS’ project mainly lies in the fact that Griffon Vultures function as environmental ‘cleaners’, helping reduce the chance of diseases from carrion.

Central Bank chief moots special levy on capital gains CYPRUS could install a special levy on capital gains from bank deposits to finance the restructuring of its banking sector, Central Bank Governor Panicos Demetriades was quoted as saying yesterday in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. “Taxing 10 per cent of interest income for example would generate a substantial amount of revenue for the government,” Demetriades said. He estimated that such a tax “would generate as much as €150
million a year.” Eurozone finance ministers pledged on Monday to agree a bailout for Cyprus by the end of March, but details of how the rescue will be financed are yet to be sorted out. Cyprus requested a bailout in June last year but it was not possible to reach an agreement with the last, communist-led government. The election of a new administration has seen talks intensifying. The “special solidarity levy for Cyprus”, as Demetriades called
it, would only be applied for three years, which would be the time frame for an international rescue. “This is not a haircut and it’s not a stealth tax. It could be implemented without undermining investors’ confidence in the banking system and - unlike a tax - it could also apply to non-Cyprus residents,” he said. The imposition of a haircut on depositors has met with stiff opposition, both inside and outside Cyprus. Demetriades rejected a haircut
out of hand, and also opposed the idea of introducing a retroactive tax on deposits above €100,000. “Anything retroactive means defrauding people,” he said. Depositors are already withdrawing money from the country - the ECB reported that corporate and household deposits fell by 2.1 per cent in January as talk of enforced losses gained pace. New President Nicos Anastasiades promised last week to work for a swift deal to prop up the island’s banks, which need capital of €8-10
Banks still waiting for recapitalisation figures
High stakes game being played over haircut
BANKS have not yet received the detailed figures concerning their individual recapitalisation needs, which were expected to be handed over on Monday, it emerged yesterday. The banks had expected the figures on Monday but the Central Bank told them they will be handed over on Tuesday instead. Yesterday however, they were told to wait until further notice, the Cyprus Mail has learned. Sources at one bank expressed their relief as that could mean the figures were not yet final and that efforts were still underway to adjust them downwards. Banks have expressed strong disagreement with the procedure used by the company that carried out the due diligence into their portfolios. They say that their needs were exaggerated. In its adverse scenario, PIMCO said bank recapitalisation needs were between €8 and €10 billion. Recent reports said the baseline scenario was €5.98 billion while the worst case one rose to €8.86 billion. The reports suggested Bank of Cyprus will need between €2.8 and €3.9 billion and Popular Bank needed €2.7-3.8 billion. Under the adverse scenario Hellenic will need €333 million, while Greece’s Alpha bank needed €149 million. The cooperative banks will need between €364 and €589 million, reports said.
‘We cannot entirely rule out they wouldn’t go ahead with a Cyprus debt haircut’ By Elias Hazou TALK of a haircut on uninsured deposits should be quickly put to bed, as mere mention of the possibility is extremely dangerous for Cyprus, analysts warn. Although EU leaders have not stated outright that a haircut option is on the table, neither have they ruled it out completely. The option of forcing losses on large deposit holders in Cypriot banks and senior bondholders has been doing the rounds recently, mostly in the German press. At Monday’s Eurogroup meeting, finance minister Michalis Sarris said the island was willing to meet the troika halfway on privatisations, downsizing its banking sector and auditing its anti moneylaundering framework but in return wanted a clear commitment that there would be no “bail-in” of bank depositors. But Eurogroup head Jeroen Dijsselbloem dodged a question as to whether bank depositors were safe, even when asked that the ambiguity could set off a run on the banks. Some EU countries appear to be in favour of a haircut on uninsured deposits - over €100,000 - although eurozone officials fear that this would cause panic among creditors in other countries. Figures released last week showed around €1.6 billion - a little over 2 per cent of total deposits - was withdrawn from Cyprus banks in January as talk of a “bail-in” intensified. But a haircut in Cyprus could set a precedent and spread panic among depositors across the eurozone - a lose-lose situation for all concerned. Analysts the Mail spoke to
said a high-stakes game is being played at the expense of Cyprus. “It seems to me that talk of a write-down of deposits which would reduce the size of the banks’ debt - is being used as leverage against us,” said Theodore Panayotou, director of the Cyprus International Institute of Management. “It’s a bargaining chip. The Europeans are telling us: if you want to make your debt sustainable either you agree to privatising state-owned enterprises, or to a haircut.” But under no circumstances should Cyprus call the Europeans’ bluff, he warned. “We cannot entirely rule out that they wouldn’t go ahead with a Cyprus debt haircut. Let’s put it this way: we don’t want to find out if they’re serious or not. A haircut would impact their economies as well, but it wouldn’t devastate them. Rather, it would give them a bad case of the flu. But for Cyprus, it would be pneumonia. “We shouldn’t play with fire,” he added. “Let’s not give them a chance to make a scapegoat out of Cyprus.” Another motive for putting the squeeze on Cyprus could be to get the Russians on board a Cyprus bailout - either directly or indirectly. A haircut would impact Russian investors in Cypriot banks along with the rest, be it via a write-down of their deposits or alternatively by a tax on deposits. That would satisfy public opinion in Germany especially, where taxpayers are wary of footing the bill for Russian money of supposedly dubious provenance. Instead of writing down bank deposits, a one-off tax on all deposits here could raise a few billion euros, rendering the debt sustainable. But on the other hand, it would cause the
billion. The total bailout, including financing for general government operations and to finance existing debt, could be up to €17 billion, equal to Cyprus’ annual economic output. Demetriades also repeated his criticism of the idea of having bank depositors participate in the rescue of the country’s banking system. The central bank chief forecast that privatisation of state-owned property could bring €4.5 billion to the government.
Finance minister Michalis Sarris in Brussels yesterday flight of as much as ten times more money from the island, destroying the banking sector and the economy at large, said Panayotou. The Central Bank governor has suggested another, less painful alternative. He told the Wall Street Journal that taxing the interest on deposits would raise some €150m a year. But either way, authorities here should put a stop to any discussion of a haircut, mere mention of which could trigger a run on the banks, said Panayotou. And “creative alternatives” should be proposed, so that a bailout is secured as soon as possible, ending the uncertainty and preventing the economy from sliding further into recession. “Each day that passes without an outcome serves to in-
crease the size of our debt,” he said. Another analyst, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, said he could not fathom the talk of a haircut, which he dubbed “a doomsday scenario.” “It defies economic sense... I can’t work out why it’s even being discussed at all,” he said. The most plausible explanation, he said, was probably a pressure point on Cyprus to agree to the terms of a draft bailout agreement reached with international lenders late last year. “It’s a way to turn the screws on us, getting us to accept privatisation of semi-governmental organisations - which is no bad thing anyway - and perhaps for advance sales of natural gas.”
Bailout demands met says new government continued from page one -ministration. The spokesman sought to dispel fears that people would lose their jobs if the SGOs were sold. “Whatever happens will not happen tomorrow. Labour rights will be fully secure,” he said. The spokesman said everyone should realise – parties, unions, workers – that “we are going through an exceptionally critical period, (an) emergency,” and the loan agreement must be signed as soon as possible to avoid bankruptcy. Telecommunications company CyTA chairman Stathis Kittis said the troika were informed of the organisation’s assets, way of operation and legal framework. He was echoed by his electricity authority (EAC) counterpart who, along with his team, met the troika experts yesterday. “We gave all the information they asked for,” said Stelios Stylianou, adding that the troika got a better understanding of how the EAC worked and the role it played in the economy. Asked about the privatisations, Stylianou said it “is purely a matter for the political leaderships and the state to decide.”

Caped crusader’s true identity revealed A CHINESE takeaway delivery man has admitted he is the mystery figure dressed as Batman who handed an alleged criminal into a police station in the middle of the night. The CCTV images of Stan Worby, 39, dressed as the Caped Crusader in a Bradford police station went around the world. But Worby said he is not happy he has been characterised as a chubby crimefighter - protesting this morning that he looks overweight in the pictures because he had to wear a tracksuit under the outfit because of the cold. He was caught on camera at Trafalgar House police station in the centre of the West Yorkshire city handing in his friend, 27-year-old Danny Frayne. Frayne was wanted by police and Worby said he agreed to go with him to the station after he had been to London for Bradford City’s Capital One
BRITAIN TODAY Parts of report to be published BRITAIN will publish parts of a confidential report on its role in the U.S. “rendition” of foreign terrorism suspects, its envoy to the main U.N. human rights forum said yesterday. The announcement came in response to a demand from a special UN investigator that the United States and Britain publish their own findings on rendition, a policy used under former US President George W. Bush to snatch suspected Islamist militants abroad and interrogate them in secret detention. Ben Emmerson, counterterrorism investigator for the United Nations Human Rights Council, said yesterday it must hold “all states including the most powerful nations in the world to account”. “The exposure of the criminal matrix organised by the Bush-era CIA (the US intelligence agency), from the heart of the world’s most powerful democracy, now calls for an unequivocal response from all of the states that took part in the programme,” Emmerson said.
Legal aid cuts defended MINISTERS yesterday came out in defence of planned cuts in the provision of legal aid. They said the legal aid system cost about £2 billion a year and was one of the most expensive in the world. A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said the system was funded by taxpayers and resources were limited. But she said legal aid would still be provided for those who most needed it. The ministry issued a statement after the UK’s most senior judge raised concerns about cuts in legal aid provision.
Cup Final clash with Swansea City, just over a week ago. He told ITV Daybreak: “Obviously it was done as a joke. “He (Frayne) wanted to get straight down. Obviously I wanted my bed. It was half-one in the morning.” And asked how he felt about the worldwide coverage of his exploits, Worby said: “Gobsmacked. I didn’t expect this. “At the end of the day it was a practical joke, just between me and Daniel.” Asked about his paunch he said it was just because he was trying to stay warm. Worby, who is from the Wyke area of Bradford, said: “I’ve got my full tracksuit underneath. I’m not just wearing this - it’s too thin.” West Yorkshire Police said the mystery Caped Crusader told them: “I’ve
caught this one for you.” Officers added that he “then promptly vanished into the night to fight crime and the fear of crime in Bradford”. Officers had not known the identity of the man posing as the camp 1960s incarnation of the famous DC Comics character, rather than the dark, black figure familiar to fans of the Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan film versions. Frayne, of Queen Street, Buttershaw, Bradford, had been wanted in connection with a number of alleged offences. He was later charged with handling stolen goods and fraud-related offences, and will appear before magistrates on Friday. The mystery was announced by the neighbourhood police team for the Buttershaw area of Bradford on their Facebook page.

Under-fire NHS boss says he is determined to stay on Resolve despite admission of failure over scandal By Ella Pickover, Andrew Woodcock and Sam Lister UNDER-fire NHS boss Sir David Nicholson says he is “absolutely determined” to stay in his job despite admitting failures over the Stafford Hospital scandal. Sir David said the “NHS lost its focus” and he conceded that he “was a part of that”. But he again rebuffed calls for him to resign, saying he wanted to lead the NHS through coming health reforms. Campaigners said that Sir David should be sacked following the publication of the Francis Report into serious failings at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust. He was in charge of the regional health authority for 10 months between 2005 and 2006 - the height of the failings in care at the trust. Giving evidence to the health select committee, Sir David said: “During that period, across the NHS as a whole, patients were not the centre of the way the system operated. “For a whole variety of reasons, not because people were
Sir David Nicholson gave evidence yesterday to a House of Commons Health Select Committee on the report into failings at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust bad but because there were a whole set of changes going on and a whole set of things we were being held accountable for from the centre, which created an environment where the leadership of the NHS lost its focus. “I put my hands up to that and I was a part of that, but my learning from that was to
make sure it doesn’t happen again.” But he told MPs that the local health authority had “no idea” about the serious care failures at the trust - where patients were routinely neglected and as many as 1,200 could have died needlessly as a result of maltreatment and neglect.
Patients were left lying in their own urine and excrement for days, forced to drink water from vases or given the wrong medication. “We had no idea,” he said. “The information was not bought to the strategic health authority, we did not see any of the information which would lead you to believe that
there was all of this going on in Mid Staffordshire.” Sir David added that he visited the hospital during the time when problems were emerging but was not alerted to any cases of neglect and poor care. He also said that the regional health authority was not alerted to high mortality rates at the trust. “I had not come across hospital standardised mortality rates during my period at Shropshire and Staffordshire nor before that,” he told the cross-party committee. “I did not have access to that information. At that moment in time, surprising as it may seem in retrospect, it was not part of the regular way in which NHS organisations were monitored in the NHS.” During the hearing, committee member Valerie Vaz told him: “Please don’t feel that this is a trial.” She then launched into a tough examination of his time as chief of the local health authority, telling him: “What struck me about your statement is it is very much like you are a process man and a procedure man. I can’t find anything about patients in there and what you are going to do on quality of care.” Sir David rejected the description as “unfair”. He said the system required accountability at hospital level, and many of those in charge of Mid-Staffs - including the chairman, non-executive directors, finance director, corporate affairs director and medical director - had all gone as a result of the scandal. “It is not true to say that people weren’t held to account in the NHS. They were,” Sir David said.
Army sites to be axed after Germany troop pull-out A SHAKE-up of Army bases to accommodate a speeded-up return of all troops from Germany will mean the disposal of seven sites across the country, it was announced yesterday. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said the changes would save £240 million a year in running costs as soldiers are moved into “clusters” in key locations. Returning forces will mainly be stationed around Salisbury Plain, Edin-
burgh and Leuchars, Catterick, Aldershot, Colchester, Stafford and the East Midlands. With the size of the Army already being substantially reduced, however, it will also mean several other sites losing their military presence. Those being made available for disposal are: Claro Barracks, Ripon, North Yorkshire; Howe Barracks, Canterbury; Craigiehall Barracks in Edinburgh; Cawdor Barracks in Brawdy, Pembro-
keshire; elements of Redford Barracks, Edinburgh; Forthside Barracks, Stirling; Copthorne Barracks, Shrewsbury. Around 11,000 British troops based in Germany will return home by 2016 under plans which will see nearly £2 billion invested in Army housing and bases. That is 70 per cent of the total and ahead of the plan to have half out by that date. The remaining 4,500 troops will be back in the UK by 2019, a year earlier than planned.
The changes are expected to save £240 million a year

Europe EUROPE TODAY Moldova govt. falls after vote MOLDOVA’S pro-Europe government fell yesterday when it lost a vote of no confidence that could affect the former Soviet republic’s drive towards a place in the European mainstream. The outcome, which left the ruling Alliance for European Integration badly damaged, places a question mark over whether a new government will continue the drive towards the European Union or seek closer relations with Russia. After his government was defeated in a vote in which his erstwhile centre-left coalition allies deserted him, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said: “This is a blow to Moldova and its citizens who dream of integration into the European Union. “After the resignation of the government, it cannot be excluded that there will be changes to the direction the country takes,” he said.
Bulgaria kidnap THREE masked men abducted the 10-year-old daughter of a convicted Bulgarian gangland boss yesterday, police said, in a brazen attack underscoring the Balkan country’s failure to tackle rampant organised crime. The European Union’s poorest member state has been repeatedly criticised by Brussels for doing too little to fight corruption and gangsterism. The failure to implement rule of law helped spark protests that toppled the government last month. Driving an SUV, the three men blocked a car taking the daughter of Evelin Banev to school, shot and wounded its driver and abducted the girl, police said in a statement.
Chapel closes THE Sistine Chapel has been closed to visitors as work got under way to prepare it for the conclave, where cardinals from around the world will gather to elect the new pope. The Vatican said that it was waiting for five more cardinals to arrive before setting the date for the election. Michelangelo’s frescoed masterpiece closed at 1pm to visitors, one of the first visible signs that the election was nearing. Construction work involves installing a false floor as well as installing the stove where the ballots will be burned. A total of 110 of the 115 voting-age cardinals attended the second day of preparatory meetings to organise the conclave, discuss the problems of the church and get to know one another.
Napolitano mulls new technocrat Italy government Grillo would reject such an administration By Steve Scherer and Roberto Landucci President Giorgio Napolitano is considering appointing a new technocrat government led by a non-politician as one way out of Italy’s political stalemate, sources said yesterday. Such a solution would come into play if centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani failed to form a government after receiving an initial mandate from Napolitano, as is expected, they said. Bersani won a majority in the lower house of parliament and says he has the right to be the first to try to form a government, although he has no workable majority in the Senate. However, 5-Star Movement leader Beppe Grillo,
who holds the whip hand after winning a huge protest vote, responded to speculation about a technocrat government in Italian media yesterday by saying he would not support such an administration. “Technocrat governments don’t exist in nature but only political governments supported by parliamentary majorities. The Monti government was the most political government since the war,” he said on his blog. He said a technocrat premier would just be a “fig leaf ” to cover the responsibilities of the traditional parties. Napolitano is charged with finding a way out of the impasse but does not begin formal consultations until around March 15 for consti-
Bolshoi ballet star detained over attack RUSSIAN police detained one of the Bolshoi Ballet’s top dancers yesterday over an acid attack that nearly blinded the troupe’s artistic director and exposed fierce backstage rivalries at the famed theatre. Russia’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that Pavel Dmitrichenko, a Bolshoi soloist who is to dance in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ this month, is suspected of plotting the attack that left Sergei Filin, 42, with severe burns after a masked assailant threw a jar of acid in his face. Police also said they detained a man suspected of carrying out the attack and another thought to have driven him to the crime scene outside Filin’s apartment on January 17. The attack shocked a country used to violent settling of scores, shining the spotlight on infighting at one its top cultural institutions. The involvement of one of its star dancers is likely to deepen the sense of crisis at the Bolshoi. A police source told the RIA news agency that investigators had evidence Dmitrichenko, who has played the evil villain in ‘Swan Lake’ and lead in Sergei Prokofiev’s ‘Ivan The Terrible’, had ordered the attack but that they were still seeking his motive. Life News, a Russian website with close ties to the police, said the suspected attacker, Yury Zarutsky, and his driver, Andrei Lipatov, were found by tracking cell phone calls made from the crime scene. The Bolshoi Theatre’s
Acid attack victim: a 2011 photo of the Bolshoi Theatre artistic director Filin spokeswoman, Katerina Novikova, could not be reached for comment on Dmitrichenko’s detention but said earlier yesterday, after a search of his apartment, that she knew of no dispute between him and Filin. She looked irritated and became defensive when addressing the possibility of divisions in the company, saying: “I think the Bolshoi Theatre troupe is waiting for Sergei’s return, and loves him and wishes him a speedy recovery.” Filin was left writhing in agony in the snow for about 20 minutes after the attack. As artistic director of the theatre’s ballet company, he had the power to make or break careers in the fiercely competitive world of ballet. He said before heading to Germany last month for treatment that he believed he knew who was behind the attack and hinted it might be tied to his work, but refused to give a name.
tutional reasons, which encourages both speculation and manoeuvring by politicians in the limbo before then. With no party able to control the upper house, the options for forming a government depend on an agreement between at least two of the three main rival forces in parliament, Bersani’s centre-left, the centre-right bloc led by Silvio Berlusconi and the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement. Grillo has expressed repeated hostility to overtures from Bersani and is considered unlikely to support a government led by him. On Monday, Vito Crimi, newly-appointed leader of the 5-Star Movement in the Senate, said his group would not give a confidence
President Giorgio Napolitano is considering a technocrat government led by a non-politician vote to any government led by one of the main parties, but could back an administration “alternative to the party system”. However, yesterday he said his remarks had been misinterpreted and the movement would not support a technocrat government. He
said the 5-Star Movement’s aim was to lead a government itself. Grillo spent much of the election campaign making fierce attacks on Monti’s unelected government, which Napolitano appointed at the height of the financial crisis in 2011.

North Korean threat to scrap truce ending war
WORLD TODAY China to focus on consumerdriven growth CHINA’S new rulers will focus on consumer-led growth to narrow the gap between rich and poor while taking steps to curb pollution and graft, the government said yesterday, tackling the main triggers for social unrest in the giant nation Outgoing Premier Wen Jiabao, speaking at the opening of the annual session of parliament, also announced record government spending in 2013 that will sustain growth and maintain the ruling Communist Party’s grip on power through an enhanced budget for internal security. The plan is the blueprint for the incoming administration led by Xi Jinping, who will formally take over as president at the end of the session, with Li Keqiang taking over as premier. “Production falls short of the ever-growing material and cultural needs of the people,” Wen said to delegates assembled in the Great Hall of the People for the once-ayear meeting of China’s National People’s Congress (NPC). Beijing also announced an 8.7 per cent rise in the 2013 domestic security budget to 769.1 billion yuan ($128 billion), exceeding military expenditure for the third year in succession.
Saudi Arabia delays execution SAUDI Arabia has granted a last-minute stay of execution to seven men who were due to die yesterday for their part in an armed robbery committed when most of them were juveniles, relatives and family friends said yesterday. The seven were sentenced to death in 2009 for robbing a jewellery store in the southern province of Asir in 2006, but Amnesty International quoted the men as saying they were tortured into confessing. It was the latest case to focus the spotlight on the Saudi legal system, which is based on a strict version of Islamic law, or sharia. The kingdom has been criticised in the West for its high number of executions, inconsistencies in the application of the law and its use of public beheadings. A spokesman for Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry was not immediately able to comment on the case. The Riyadh government has repeatedly denied that the kingdom practices torture.
US-China deal on UN resolution to expand sanctions over Pyongyang’s nuclear test By Louis Charbonneau and Michelle Nichols
South Korean soldiers stand guard as journalists visit the truce village of Panmunjom in the demilitarised zone dividing North and South Korea on February 27, 2013
THE United States and China reached a deal that “significantly expands” U.N. sanctions on North Korea for its third nuclear test, eliciting a renewed threat by Pyongyang yesterday to scrap an armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War. China’s UN ambassador, Li Baodong, told Reuters the 15-nation council was aiming for a Thursday vote on a draft sanctions resolution, which was agreed to by Washington and Beijing after three weeks of negotiations. US Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said after a closed-door meeting of the Security Council that the new draft resolution “builds up, strengthens and significantly expands the scope of the strong UN sanctions already in place”. “The sanctions contained in this resolution will significantly impede the ability of North Korea to develop further its illicit nuclear and ballistic missile programmes,” she said. The Chinese envoy made clear that Beijing was dis-
pleased by North Korea’s February 12 nuclear test - its third since 2006 - though he cautioned against responding too harshly. “We support action taken by the council, but we think that action should be proportionate, should be balanced and focused on bringing down the tension and focusing on the diplomatic track,” Li said.
‘STRONG SIGNAL’ “A strong signal must be sent out that a nuclear test is against the will of the international community,” he added. North Korea’s previous nuclear tests, in 2006 and 2009, prompted the Security Council to impose sanctions that included a ban on the import of nuclear and missile technology, an arms embargo and a ban on luxury goods imports. Rice gave some of the specifics of the draft resolution. “For the first time ever, this resolution targets the illicit activities of North Korean diplomatic personnel, North Korean banking relationships, (and) illicit transfers of bulk cash,” Rice said after a closed-door meeting of the
15-nation council. “North Korea will be subject to some of the toughest sanctions imposed by the United Nations,” she told reporters. “The breadth and scope of these sanctions is exceptional and demonstrates the strength of the international community’s commitment to denuclearization” of the Korean peninsula.” Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin was quoted by Russian media as saying Moscow welcomed the fact that the draft resolution leaves the door open to a renewal of the stalled six-party aid-fordisarmament talks between the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan. Developments in New York led to a new volley of bellicose rhetoric from Pyongyang. In addition to scrapping the armistice, North Korea said it would sever a military “hotline” with the United States if South Korea and Washington pressed on with two-monthlong war games. “We will completely nullify the Korean armistice,” the North’s KCNA news agency said, quoting the Korean People’s Army Supreme Command spokesman.
Chavez allies meet after new setback VENEZUELA’S political and military leaders gathered at the presidential palace and supporters wept yesterday after the government said President Hugo Chavez suffered a serious setback in his battle against cancer. Some loyal “Chavistas” took to the streets in downtown Caracas, blowing whistles and horns, as rumours swirled that the socialist leader’s 14-year rule of the OPEC nation could be nearing an end. “There is so much sadness and confusion,” said one die-hard Chavez supporter, Marisol Aponte, a community worker in the city’s slums, her voice choking with emotion. “But we must be strong and put into practice all he has taught us.” In probably its most sombre update so far on Chavez’s health, the government said late on Monday that his breathing problems had worsened, he was suffering from a severe new respiratory infection, and his overall condition remained “very delicate”. The 58-year-old president has not been seen in public nor heard from since undergoing surgery in Cuba on December 11, his fourth operation since the disease was detected in his pelvic area in mid-2011. Addressing the nation from the Miraflores
presidential palace, Vice President Nicolas Maduro repeated a charge first made by Chavez himself - that the cancer was an “attack” by his enemies in the United States and by Venezuela’s opposition. A US diplomat had been expelled for plotting against the government, amid an upsurge of conspiracies and sabotage attempts against the Venezuelan government, he said. “These are the most difficult hours since his operation ... but our supreme responsibility is to keep telling our people the truth,” added Maduro, surrounded by grim-faced officials. Several dozen people gathered from early morning at the Catholic chapel in the military hospital where Chavez has spent the last two weeks since returning from Cuba. Some prayed aloud, while others wept quietly. The government has repeatedly said Chavez is fighting for his life. Officials have said he is breathing through a tracheal tube, unable to speak, and undergoing a new round of chemotherapy. The government is furious at speculation Chavez may already be dead. Opposition leader Henrique Capriles has repeatedly accused Maduro and others of lying about Chavez’s condition.

Afghan court jails 20 men in landmark bank fraud case AN Afghan court gave jail terms yesterday to 20 of 22 men convicted in a multi-million-dollar bank fraud case seen as a test of Afghanistan’s commitment to fighting corruption. The collapse of Kabulbank in 2010 triggered a financial crisis, civil disorder and a run on deposits, worrying foreign donors and
embarrassing the US and Afghan governments, which had touted its credentials as a modern lender integral to developing a tiny economy crippled by war and mismanagement. The two former heads of the bank, founder Sher Khan Fernod and former Chief Executive Haji Khalil Ferozi, convicted of taking
$810 million of the $935 million stolen, were both sent to jail for five years. The case was viewed as a crucial barometer of Afghanistan’s commitment to stabilising the economy, less than two years before the withdrawal of most foreign troops and a winding down of billions of dollars in foreign aid. It appears to
be the first major bank fraud trial in Afghan history. Brothers of President Hamid Karzai and his first vice-president, Mohammad Qasim Fahim, who were both shareholders, were spared jail sentences in the rulings thanks to a presidential decree a year ago that granted immunity from prosecution to those who returned funds.

Saudi prince’s anger at valuation
Pistorius family row over weapons
THE Saudi owner of the Savoy Hotel is embroiled in a furious row with the compilers of a rich list who said he was worth almost $10 billion less than his own valuation. Magazine publishers Forbes ranked Prince Alwaleed bin Talal as the world’s 26th richest person with a net worth of $20 billion (£13 billion) in its annual audit of the biggest billionaires. But the estimate has infuriated the 57-year-old prince, a nephew of the Saudi king, who has written a strongly worded letter to the magazine’s chairman and editorin-chief Steve Forbes. He has now asked for his name to be removed from the list and said his office would no longer cooperate with the “biased” Forbes team responsible for the rankings. The prince, who owns a customised A380 Airbus and a Boeing 747, did not publicly put a figure on his wealth. But a spokesman for Forbes said he had put it at $29.6 billion, placing him just inside the top 10. Prince Alwaleed, who owns stakes in Citibank, News Corporation, Time Warner and Twitter, has said that his investment group, Kingdom Holding Company, will continue to work with Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index. This rates his wealth at $28 billion — putting him in 16th place. Kingdom chief financial officer Shadi Sanbar said in a press release: “We have worked very openly with the Forbes team over the years and have on multiple occasions pointed out problems with their methodology that need correction. “However, after several years of our efforts to correct mistakes falling on deaf ears we have decided that Forbes has no intention of improving the accuracy of our holdings and we have made the decision to move on.”
THE family of Oscar Pistorius has been caught up in a public row over whether guns are a necessary protection against crime in South Africa. Pistorius’ father, Henke Pistorius, told a newspaper the family owns handguns for self-defence and suggested that South Africa’s government shares blame for “white crime levels” in the country where police register more than 15,000 murders per year. But the runner’s uncle, Arnold Pistorius, issued a statement in which the family distanced itself from the father’s comments. It said they were “deeply concerned about the comments” and that they do not “represent the views of Oscar or the rest of the Pistorius family.” The double amputee track star is now on bail after shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on February 14 with his 9 mm pistol. Prosecutors charged him with premeditated murder, saying the shooting followed an argument between the two. Pistorius said he mistook Steenkamp for a burglar, fired shots at the door of his toilet and then discovered that she was inside. His uncle, who has acted as the family spokesman following the killing, said in the statement that “the Pistorius family own weapons purely for sport and hunting purposes”. That contradicts Oscar Pistorius’ evidence to the magistrate who freed him on bail. In an affidavit, the athlete known as ‘Blade Runner’ for his carbon-fibre prosthetic running legs said he owned the 9 mm handgun and slept with it under his bed because “I have also been a victim of violence and of burglaries before.”
Kenyatta (centre) faces international charges of crimes against humanity linked to the last election

Kenyatta in the lead as Kenya counts votes By Yara Bayoumy and George Obulutsa KENYAN presidential hopeful Uhuru Kenyatta opened an early lead as ballots were counted yesterday in an election that brought out millions of voters despite pockets of violence that killed at least 15 people. The deputy prime minister, who faces international charges of crimes against humanity linked to the last election, was provisionally ahead of Prime Minister Raila Odinga by 53 to 42 per cent with about half the votes counted. But Kenyatta could still be
But official declaration not due until today at earliest overhauled as the count goes on in a vote Kenyans hope will restore their nation’s image as one of Africa’s most stable democracies after the bloodshed five years ago. Although voting passed off broadly peacefully with a big turnout, the real test will be whether the candidates and their backers accept the result, after the disputed 2007 vote touched off ethnic blood-letting that killed more than 1,200 people.
“Nobody should celebrate, nobody should complain,” election commission chairman Isaac Hassan told journalists, saying work was going on to resolve glitches and speed up the count. “We therefore continue to appeal for patience from the public.” The commission says provisional results may not be tallied until today, meaning an official declaration will not come until then or later.
Kenyatta’s lead has held overnight but about 60 per cent of polling stations have yet to report. Odinga’s camp said counting in their strongholds had not been completed yet and a debate over the fate of a sizeable number of rejected votes could help shift the balance. The United States and Western donors have watched the vote closely, concerned about the stability of a nation seen as a regional ally in the fight against militant Islam. They also worry about what to do if Kenyatta wins, because of the charges he faces at the International Criminal Court (ICC) related to the violence five years ago.
Kerry: United States increasingly confident weapons being sent to Syria moderates U.S. SECRETARY of State John Kerry said yesterday Washington was increasingly confident that weapons being sent to the Syrian opposition by other countries were going to moderate forces. with nations in the region to discuss the kinds of arms being sent to the different Syrian opposition forces. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are widely believed to be providing weapons to the rebels, but the United States says it does not wish to send arms for fear they may find their way to Islamist hardliners who might then
use them against Western targets. “We had a discussion about the types of weapons that are being transferred,” Kerry said at a joint news conference with Prime Minister Sheikh Hammad bin Jassim al-Thani of Qatar, the last stop on a nine-nation tour of Europe and the Middle East.

Business Dow surges to record high
Isolated Britain fails to avert EU bank bonus cap
THE Dow Jones Industrial Average surged to a record high yesterday, breaking through levels last seen in 2007 as equities jumped 1 per cent in a broad rally. Investors poured money into blue-chip stocks in expectation of more gains amid signs of a strengthening US economy. With the day’s advance, the Dow has gained nearly 9 per cent so far this year, ahead of the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite Index. Ten of the Dow’s 30 component stocks reached new 52-week highs on a day when 418 stocks hit new yearly highs on the New York Stock Exchange. Analysts said yesterday’s advance was linked less to one specific catalyst and more to the same factors that have been driving the rally this year, namely, attractive valuations and liquidity resulting from the US Federal Reserve’s easy monetary policies. “Just because we’re testing old highs doesn’t necessarily mean the markets are going to capitulate. The underlying fundamentals still remain in place,” said Joseph Tanious, global market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds in New York. Markets have shrugged off the stalemate between the congressional Republicans and the White House over automatic US government spending cuts, known as the “sequester”. Other recent headwinds, including political turmoil, have also been navigated without much pain, with investors using any decline as an opportunity to buy. “It’s been a bumpy ride, obviously, the past few years, but it appears corporate America has proved its resilience once again,” Tanious said. The Dow was also on track to surpass the record closing high set on October 9, 2007, when it ended at 14,164.53.
Ireland’s Noonan says little room to change deal for UK By John O’Donnell and Robin Emmott BRITAIN was left isolated in Europe yesterday after it failed to secure backing to water down new EU rules limiting bankers’ bonuses, a measure that could threaten London’s dominance as a financial centre. The rules, which would limit bankers’ bonuses to the equivalent of their salary, or two times their salary if shareholders agree, are set to be introduced next year and would represent the toughest bonus regime anywhere in the world. They threaten Britain’s financial industry the most, raising the risk that some banks and their top bankers could relocate to other financial centres outside the European Union. Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, appealed to EU ministers to change the rules at a meeting in Brussels, arguing that the proposed cap would have a “perverse” effect. “It will push salaries up, it will make it more difficult to claw back bankers’ bonuses when things go wrong, it will make it more difficult to ensure that the banks and the bankers pay when there are mistakes, rather than the taxpayer,” said Osborne in a part of the meeting that

But none of the other 26 EU member states was willing to stand with him, and it looks very unlikely that any significant changes to the rules will be made. Since the rules do not require unanimous backing, Britain has no veto over the proposals. “The space for further negotiation is quite narrow,” said Michael Noonan, the finance minister of Ireland, which as the current holder of the EU’s rotating sixmonth presidency negotiated the deal with the Euro-

best Britain could hope for in further negotiations over the rules in the coming weeks was perhaps an increase in the amount of bonus that can be deferred and therefore discounted when calculating the total payout. But Michel Barnier, the European commissioner for financial regulation and an author of the proposals, said the broad parameters would not change. Asked about the possibility of any legal challenge to the bonus cap, he replied: “Good luck.” Britain’s powerful financial
sector fears the rules will put London at a disadvantage and provoke an exodus of major banks and staff to rival financial centres, although HSBC, one of Britain’s largest banks, has said it does not have any plans at this stage to move its headquarters. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble indicated that he would be uncomfortable with any country being outvoted on the new legislation, opening up the possibility of some change.

Executives from top players warned yesterday at the Geneva car show that demand in Europe would stay weak for years as governments drive through austerity measures
EUROPE’S ailing car market has weakened further in recent months and with no signs of recovery, some industry leaders hope governments will relax their opposition to plant closures and job cuts needed to restore profits. At the Geneva car show yesterday, executives from top players including Ford (F.N), Fiat (FIA.MI), Daimler (DAIGn.DE) and Renault (RENA.PA) warned demand in Europe would stay weak for years as governments drive through austerity measures. “The European market is not in a condition we expected three months ago,” said Dieter Zetsche, chief executive of German luxury carmaker Daimler, reflecting the industry’s dismay at a continued plunge in sales in the region. “The sustained nature of the European market slump is becoming pretty clear, and nobody now expects a return to (pre-crisis) levels on any visible horizon,” said Guillaume Faury, strategy chief at France’s PSA Peugeot Citroen (PEUP.PA). “So there’s going to be a kind of reckoning on European production levels for the next five years, leading governments to change their posture and encourage restructuring rather than oppose it,” he predicted. New car sales in the 27-member European Union dropped 8.2 per cent to a 17-year low in 2012 as consumer incomes were squeezed
by rising prices, subdued wages and austerity measures. Hopes of a recovery this year have so far proved misplaced. New car registrations in Germany, previously a bastion of stability, slumped more than 10 per cent in February, while those in France and Italy fell by around 12 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively. Carmakers have been battling to cut European production, while also focusing on recovering demand in the United States and robust growth in Asia, as well as pockets of outperformance such as sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and high-end cars. But their European restructuring efforts have often met with opposition from governments worried about rising unemployment. “I think there’s a realisation that a longterm slump needs long-term measures. We’re already seeing the first signs of this in France, where the need for restructuring has been understood and accepted,” Faury said, adding signs of deterioration in the German market could lead to a similar change in stance there. German premium carmaker BMW (BMWG. DE) similarly warned of a long haul to recovery. “We believe that the underlying problem in Europe, which is mainly about debt, will persist for at least five more years,” chief executive Norbert Reithofer said.

Opinion
Compromises cloud results of Eurogroup meeting NOBODY seemed to know what to make of Monday night’s Eurogroup meeting which discussed the Cyprus bailout. Had finance minister Michalis Sarris been successful in achieving the goals he had set or had he failed? As with many EU issues there is no clear answer because decisions are usually compromises. For instance, on the issue of the moneylaundering audit, on which there was no agreement at the previous Eurogroup meeting, with the Cyprus government objecting to an audit by a private firm, supported by other countries, a compromise was reached. The audit would be carried out by the Council of Europe’s Moneyval – the Cyprus government’s demand – independent, anti-money laundering experts and independent auditors. On the surface, both sides should be satisfied with this compromise, even though the government has not prevented independent firms from being involved in the investigation. This is not necessarily because Cyprus has something to hide – the authorities insisted that no money laundering was taking place – but because independent firms could seek the lifting of bank confidentiality laws as part of their investigation, something that could affect the standing of a financial services centre. The failure to announce a decision regarding the misguided idea for a haircut of bank deposits, which appears to have been doing the rounds in Brussels, was certainly a minus for Cyprus. In interviews he had given prior to the meeting Sarris, rather unwisely, said he would seek a clear commitment that there would be no bail-in of depositors. The Eurogroup gave no such assurance which suggested that this was still an option. Sarris, who had, quite rightly, branded this a foolish idea, was unable to convince our EU partners to rule out this option. Perhaps the Eurogroup felt that the threat of a haircut could be used to speed up the finalising of the memorandum of understanding, for which an end of March deadline was set. It could help the government lift its irrational objections to the privatisations that troika officials have been discussing in the last couple of days. The setting of a deadline is certainly a positive development. Yesterday the vicepresident of the European Commission Olli Rehn announced that a troika team would be arriving in Cyprus with a view to finalising the memorandum. Rehn also said the investigation of money laundering would be completed before the end of the month. This sense of urgency did not exist a month ago, with EU finance ministers refusing to give a date for the signing of the bailout agreement. Although Sarris did not secure the commitment he was seeking on Monday, his failure should be tempered by the knowledge that the signing of a memorandum is less than four weeks away.

The near impossible battle against hackers everywhere D
IRE warnings from Washington about a “cyber Pearl Harbour” envision a single surprise strike from a formidable enemy that could destroy power plants nationwide, disable the financial system or cripple the US government. But those on the front lines say it isn’t all about protecting US government and corporate networks from a single sudden attack. They report fending off many intrusions at once from perhaps dozens of countries, plus well-funded electronic guerrillas and skilled criminals. Security officers and their consultants say they are overwhelmed. The attacks are not only from China, which Washington has long accused of spying on US companies, many emanate from Russia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Western countries. Perpetrators range from elite military units to organised criminal rings to activist teenagers. "They outspend us and they outman us in almost every way,” said Dell’s chief security officer, John McClurg. “I don’t recall, in my adult life, a more challenging time.” The big fear is that one day a major company or government agency will face a severe and very costly disruption to their business when hackers steal or damage critical data, sabotage infrastructure or destroy consumers’ confidence in the safety of their information. Elite security firm Mandiant Corp last week published a 74-page report that accused a unit of the Chinese army of stealing data from more than 100 companies. While China immediately denied the allegations, Mandiant and other security experts say the hacker group is just one of more than 20 with origins in China. Chinese hackers tend to take aim at the largest corporations and most innovative technology companies, using trick emails that appear to come from trusted colleagues but bear attachments tainted with viruses, spyware and other malicious software, according to Western cyber investigators. Eastern European criminal rings, meanwhile, use ‘driveby downloads’ to corrupt popular websites, such as NBC.com last week, to infect visitors. Though the malicious programs vary, they often include software for recording keystrokes as computer users enter financial account passwords. Others getting into the game include activists in the style of the loosely associated group known as Anonymous, who favour denial-of-service attacks that temporarily block websites from view and automated searches for common vulnerabilities that give them a way in to access to corporate information. An increasing number of countries are sponsoring cyber weapons and electronic spying programs, law enforcement officials said. The reported involvement of the United States in the production of electronic worms including

Stuxnet, which hurt Iran’s uranium enrichment program, is viewed as among the most successful. Iran has also been blamed for a series of unusually effective denial-of-service attacks against major US banks in the past six months that blocked their online banking sites. Iran is suspected of penetrating at least one US oil company, two people familiar with the ongoing investigation told Reuters. “There is a battle looming in any direction you look,” said Jeff Moss, the chief information security officer of ICANN, a group that manages some of the internet’s key infrastructure. "Everybody’s personal objectives go by the wayside when there is just fire after fire,” said Moss, who also advises the US Department of Homeland Security. Industry veterans say the growth in the number of hackers, the software tools available to them, and the thriving economic underground serving them have made any computer network connected to the internet impossible to defend flawlessly. “Your average operational security engineer feels somewhat under siege,” said Bruce Murphy, a Deloitte & Touche principal who studies the security workforce. “It feels like Sisyphus rolling a rock up the hill, and the hill keeps getting steeper.” In the same month that President Barack Obama decried enemies “seeking the ability to sabotage our power grids, our financial institutions, our air traffic control systems,” cyber attacks on some prominent US companies were reported.
KEEP SILENT Three leading US newspapers, Apple, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft all admitted in February they had been hacked. The malicious software inserted on employee computers at the technology companies has been detected at hundreds of other firms that have chosen to keep silent about the incidents, two people familiar with the case told Reuters. “I don’t remember a time when so many companies have been so visibly ‘owned’ and were so ill-equipped,” said Adam O’Donnell, an executive at security firm Sourcefire, using the hacker slang for unauthorised control. Far from being hyped, cyber intrusions remain so underdisclosed - for fear leaks about the attacks will spook investors - that the new head of the FBI’s cyber crime effort, Executive Assistant Director Richard McFeely, said the secrecy has become a major challenge. “Our biggest issue right now is getting the private sector to a comfort level where they can report anomalies, malware, incidences within their networks,” McFeely said. “It has
Washington has long accused China of spying on US companies. A People’s Liberation Army soldier (below) stands guard in front of ‘Unit 61398’, a secretive Chinese military unit believed to be behind a series of hacking attacks been very difficult with a lot of major companies to get them to cooperate fully.” The former head of the National Security Agency, Michael Hayden, supports the use of trade and diplomatic channels to pressure hacking nations, as called for under a new White House strategy that was announced on Wednesday. “The Chinese, with some legitimacy, will say ‘You spy on us.’ And as former director of the NSA I’ll say, ‘Yeah, and we’re better at it than you are’,” said Hayden, now a principal at security consultant Chertoff Group. He said what worries him the most is Chinese presence on networks that have no espionage value, such as systems that run infrastructure like energy and water plants. “There’s no intellectual property to be pilfered there, no trade secrets, no negotiating positions. So that makes you frightened because it seems to be attack preparation,” Hayden said. Amid the rising angst, many of the top professionals in the field convened in San Francisco yesterday for the bestknown US security industry conference, named after host company and EMC Corp unit RSA. Several experts said they
were convinced that companies are spending money on the wrong stuff, such as antivirus subscriptions that cannot recognise new or targeted attacks. Others urge a more basic approach of limiting users’ computer privileges, rapidly installing software updates, and allowing only trusted programs to function. Some security companies are starting over with new designs, such as forcing all of their customers’ programs to run on walled-off virtual machines. With such divergent views, so much money at stake, and so many problems, there are perhaps just two areas of agreement. Most people in the industry and government believe things will get worse. Coviello, for his part, predicted that a first-of-its kind - but relatively simple - virus that deleted all data on tens of thousands of PCs at Saudi Arabia’s national oil company last year is a harbinger of what will come. And most say that the increased mainstream attention on cyber security, even if it fixes uncomfortably on the industry’s failings and tenacious adversaries, will help drive a desperately needed debate about what do to internationally and at home.

Showbiz Whitney’s FBI files show fan letters, Twelve previously unreleased studio performances by guitarist extortion
Hendrix estate rolls out People, Hell and Angels
By Eric Kelsey By Iain Blair IF there were any doubts about the lingering force of fabled rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix more than four decades after his death, his latest single should put them to rest. The single ‘Somewhere’ went to No.1 on the Billboard Hot Singles sales in February. That bodes well for the latest posthumous album plucked from the Hendrix musical vaults, which producers say has stood up well to the test of time. People, Hell and Angels, released on CD yesterday, is billed as a collection of twelve previously unreleased studio performances by Hendrix, although some of the songs have emerged in other versions since his death at age 27 in 1970 from an accidental drug overdose. The album arrives with the simultaneous release of newly struck mono vinyl editions of early Hendrix classic albums Are You Experienced and Axis: Bold As Love. The tracks on People, Hell and Angels, were planned as a follow-up to the influential guitarist’s chart-topping 1968 album Electric Ladyland. “After the huge success of the (Jimi Hendrix) Experience and those first albums, he wanted to branch out more, and the blues sound on this is just different from the others,” said Janie Hendrix, Jimi’s step-sister and president and CEO of Experience Hendrix, the company founded by the musician’s father to oversee the star’s estate. “This new album is very important for all his fans as it really showcases his creativity and a different side to him,” she told Reuters. Feeling constrained by the limitations of the Jimi Hendrix Experience trio (which included drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel

Redding), the guitarist had already started working with an eclectic group of musicians. They included the Buffalo Springfield’s Stephen Stills, drummer Buddy Miles, saxophonist Lonnie Youngblood and bassist Billy Cox, with whom Hendrix had served in the US military. The resulting sessions, culled from 1968 and 1969, form the basis of People, Hell and Angels, co-produced by Janie Hendrix, original engineer and mixer Eddie Kramer and long-time Hendrix histo-
rian John McDermott. “What we wanted to do with this new album is provide what we all felt are really compelling examples of Jimi’s artistry and also his often-overlooked role as a producer,” said McDermott, a long-time collaborator with Experience Hendrix on various Hendrix projects. “Jimi’s masters were recorded before the era of massproduction that caused the archival nightmares of the Seventies, for example, where tapes lose their glue backing, so we’ve never faced that
Fans upset by Bieber show delay THE 02 has apologised to young fans after teenage superstar Justin Bieber was nearly two hours late on stage at his latest concert. The Canadian artist was opening the first of four nights at the London venue but failed to start his performance until nearly 10.30pm. Hundreds of Twitter users have complained. Parents used the social media site to criticise the 19-year-old, who was booed by the audience, for leaving young fans waiting on a school night. At 11.36pm, the official account for the 02 tweeted: “Justin Bieber is now on stage and apologises for the lateness of his show.” It later added: “Sorry to all the Justin Bieber fans for the lateness of his show tonight.
problem with the Jimi Hendrix library. His whole tape archive is in very good shape,” McDermott said. The new album is the latest in a slew of albums, films, tribute tours and books following Hendrix’s death in 1970 in London. These materials far outnumber the three studio albums he released in his four-year career at the top. “He’s a timeless artist and the technology’s finally caught up to what he was trying to do musically,” Janie Hendrix said. “People are still hungry for
real music and good songs, and Jimi was a great songwriter and one of the greatest guitarists of all time,” she said. Every new generation regards Hendrix as a touchstone, said McDermott. “If you want to understand the role of rock guitar and listen to real virtuosity, then Jimi’s the man. “People react to the originals, and that’s what he was, a true visionary whose music doesn’t sound dated at all nearly half a century later,” he said.
Opera singer Kiri Te Kanawa to appear in Downton Abbey By Mike Collett-White
THE FBI yesterday released decades-old files on late pop singer Whitney Houston, detailing letters from obsessed fans and an alleged extortion attempt investigated by the bureau. The 128 pages from Houston’s files posted online on the FBI’s website showed one fan’s attention-seeking letters but did not divulge any new insights into the troubled singer’s personal life. Houston, known both for her soaring ballads and well chronicled history of drug abuse, was found dead last year in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub. She was 48. Authorities called her death an accidental drowning due to cocaine use and heart disease. The FBI cases were opened at the height of the singer’s career between 1988 and 1999. Names and several details were redacted from the files. Among the Grammy-winning singer’s FBI files, released through a Freedom of Information Act request, were love letters sent by a Vermont man, who wrote that he “might hurt someone with some crazy idea”. The file shows the FBI interviewed the man but the bureau concluded no law was broken because the man said he would have only hurt Houston’s reputation by proclaiming his love publicly. An alleged $250,000 extortion attempt was brought to the FBI’s attention shortly after Houston’s marriage to R&B singer Bobby Brown in 1992 and threatened to make public private information unless the singer paid. Houston told the FBI in an interview that she considered the person a friend. Houston in 1999 also received letters and recorded cassette tapes from the Netherlands which she deemed threatening, according to the files. The sender made outrageous claims in an FBI interview that he was “President of Europe”, purchased Brazil for $66 billion and helped Nelson Mandela win the election in South Africa.
NEW Zealand opera star Kiri Te Kanawa will act, and sing, in an upcoming episode of the hit British stately home drama Downton Abbey, a spokeswoman for the ITV series said this week. The 68-year-old singer will play a house guest staying at Downton Abbey, joining the award-winning cast in the fourth season of the period drama that has won large audiences in Britain and the United States.
Justin Bieber arrived on stage nearly two hours late at the O2 The Tube will still be running when the show finishes.” Many youngsters were forced to miss the gig altogether in order to get their last train out of London. A tweet complained: “Justin Bieber needs to under-
stand he has fans that are really young, he can’t come on stage like 1 hour and 45 mins late on a school night!” The world-wide ‘Believe’ tour has already stopped in Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Nottingham.
AWARD-WINNING Created by British screenwriter Julian Fellowes, the award-winning Downton Abbey follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their staff, and has starred veteran performers Maggie Smith and Shirley MacLaine. Te Kanawa is best known in Britain for her performance of Handel’s ‘Let the Bright Seraphim’ at the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Diana watched by a global audience of hundreds of millions of people.
The FBI cases were opened at the height of the singer’s career from 1988 to 1999

Education ‘Slumdog’ professor wins $1m TED prize A PROFESSOR at a British university whose research inspired the film Slumdog Millionaire has won a $1-million (£658,300) prize to help his work in educating the world’s poorest children. Prof Sugata Mitra, of Newcastle University, follows rock star Bono and chef Jamie Oliver in picking up the prestigious TED prize, which promotes “ideas worth spreading”. His pioneering work with Indian slum children has shown that they can learn independently of adults and direct teaching, if they have access to computers. The education expert believes the internet will allow children from the poorest parts of the world to make their own discoveries and develop intellectually if they are encouraged to collaborate. He now aims to set up a School in the Cloud, which will link mentors with children over the net, allowing even children in remote, poor areas to learn. Prof Mitra said: “In 1999, I accidentally glimpsed The Cloud through an experiment often called The Hole in the Wall. “I found that groups of Indian street children would learn to use computers and the internet by themselves, with little or no knowledge of English and never having seen a computer before. “During the next five years ... I learned that groups of children can complete educational objectives by themselves, using the internet, if you leave them alone. “By 2009 ... I created a ‘granny cloud’ of retired school teachers who would encourage children to learn by themselves. “By 2012, teachers around the world were using SOLEs - self-organised learning environments - where children would group around internet connections to discuss Big Questions. “My ‘wish that can inspire the world’ will enable me to further this work by involving partners across the TED network which extends across the globe. If this works, we will have an alternative system that will level the playing field.”

Cyprus art students receive ‘highest mark in the world’ Cypriots shine in Cambridge examinations
“Missing” by Abby Hope Skinner (coloured pencil, 2011)
Skinner (pictured) shared the top accolade in A-Level Art and Design in 2012 with Nicholas Zembashi
By Poly Pantelides DOZENS of secondary school students in Cyprus with outstanding results in Cambridge examinations and who are doing better than thousands of candidates worldwide, recently received a well-deserved pat on the back during an awards ceremony in Nicosia. Over 40 learners received awards for exceptional performance, including 28 who topped the Cyprus exams and three who achieved the highest marks in the world. “The winning learners outperformed thousands of candidates worldwide who sat examinations in Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge International AS and A Levels,” an announcement from Cambridge International Examinations said. The examinations pave the way for admission in UK and international universities. Sharing the top accolade in A-Level Art and Design in 2012, was the International School of Paphos’ Abby Hope Skinner with Xenion High School’s Nicholas Zembashi. “It just wouldn’t sink in. I
couldn’t believe those words, ‘The highest mark in the world!’ Suddenly, it seemed like all the hard work and sacrifice was worthwhile,” Abby said. Abby is now taking a foundation course at the Arts University College at Bournemouth, and her enthusiasm about her chosen career path is obvious. “If I had to describe myself, the first thing I would want to be able to say is: I am an artist,” she said on her website www.abbyskinner.com where she displays beautiful art work, including that which got her the coveted highest mark. “To do things to a high level
requires commitment, time, and effort,” Abby said adding that she was grateful to her parents for their support, “and to those friends who understood my desire to give my
best in a subject I love.” And busting the perception that art students just laze about, Abby said that art was an “extremely demanding subject” that often meant harsh choices. “(Art) is quite solitary, and can take its toll on social life,” she said. The International School of Paphos (ISOP) boasted 10 of 13 Outstanding Learner awards on a number of exams and some seven students got Top in Cyprus awards, among
others. An ISOP student, Rafael Laouris got the best marks across seven IGCSEs in Cyprus. Student with the Heritage Private School in Cyprus, Daria Vlasova, was the best in the world in First Language Russian IGCSE exam. Other schools, including Gau The American College, the British Council, The G C School of Careers and Pascal Education Larnaca also had award winning students.

Britain loses ground in university rankings CAMBRIDGE and Oxford are among the most prestigious universities in the world, according to new international rankings, but other UK institutions are losing ground. A new global league table shows that the two top universities remain part of an elite group of “super brands”. They were placed third and fourth respectively in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings, with Oxford moving up two spots from sixth last year. The rankings measure the power of university brands, based on the opinions of senior academics. But researchers warned of a polarisation between the very top institutions in the UK, and the rest, amid increasing competition from Asian nations. The UK has lost three universities from the top 100 in the last two years, the rankings show. The latest table reveals that Leeds University has dropped out of the top 100, joining Sheffield University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, which lost their places last year. Other UK universities are faring better.
‘Super brands’: Oxbridge Bristol University has clung on to a top 100 spot, at the bottom in the 91-100 group, while Manchester came 47th, putting it in the top 50 for the first time. Edinburgh University - the only Scottish institution in the top 100 - rose three places to 46th. University College London rose one place to 20th, and the London School of Economics increased four places from 29th to 25th. Overall, the UK had nine universities in the top 100, compared to 12 two years ago. Only the United States had more institutions in the top 100 this year - 43 in total - with Harvard taking first place in the rankings, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in second.

Y
OU’VE probably noticed it already, that book with a black cover and neon orange two-word title that will be this year’s Fifty Shades-style publishing sensation: Gone Girl. Nine months since its US release, the novel has sold two million copies worldwide, spent 13 weeks at the top of The New York Times bestseller list, and since it came out in the UK in January, sold 300,000 copies there. The film rights have been snapped up by FOX for £1 million, Reese Witherspoon is said to be on board as producer, Emily Blunt is tipped to play the lead, and David Fincher, director of ‘The Social Network’ and ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, will apparently take the helm behind the camera. Not bad for a former entertainment journalist who lost her job in the wake of 2008’s financial crisis.
But rather than make her hometown of Chicago the setting, like Dennis Lehane’s Boston or Ian Rankin’s Edinburgh, Gillian Flynn has chosen as her milieu the malls and McMansions of Midwestern suburbia. And instead of a cop and a hardened criminal, the protagonists of her novel are a husband and wife: thirty-something couple Nick and Amy Dunne who, as newly redundant Manhattanite magazine writers, have been forced to move back to Nick’s Missouri hometown in the depths of the recession. On their fifth wedding anniversary, Amy goes missing, and Nick finds himself suspected of her murder. It wouldn’t be fair to reveal what happens next; suffice to say, Amy and Nick make extremely unreliable narrators. Flynn’s novel is gripping and horrifyingly astute on the subject of relationships,

at she’s reading? Get Gone: the book is Gillian Flynn’s third novel
and often laugh-out-loud funny. “Every marriage involves gamesmanship, little power-plays and squabbles and pettiness,” says Flynn. “I just amplified that - a lot.” Fifty Shades aside, Gone Girl was the other US publishing phenomenon in 2012. Flynn - whose first name is pronounced with a hard ‘G’ - had previously written two reasonably successful novels, at nights and weekends, while spending her days as a TV and film writer for Entertainment Weekly magazine. But then, just like her characters, she was laid off. The 42-year-old admits her own experience crept on to the page. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Flynn moved to New York as a journalism student and, like Nick, she was “a kid with a chip on their shoulder about being from the middle of the country and not having been
to an Ivy League school, who is dropped into this rarefied environment”. In one of the book’s more autobiographical passages, Nick describes arriving in the city during the late 1990s: “The last gasp of the glory days, although no one knew it then. New York was packed with writers, real writers, because there were magazines, real magazines, loads of them. This was back when the internet was still some exotic pet kept in the corner of the publishing world… a time when newly graduated college kids could come to New York and get paid to write. We had no clue that we were embarking on careers that would vanish within a decade.” Flynn worked at Entertainment Weekly for ten years before falling victim to a round of redundancies in 2008. “People told me it was great
that I’d lost my job because I could be a novelist,” she says, “but I loved my job so much! I never got over that thrill of leaving the office in the middle of the day to go to a movie screening that I was being paid to write about and talk about to all my dorky film friends.” She already had a few unfinished novels in her desk drawer when she completed her first thriller, Sharp Objects. “I’d started various books over the years and never got far,” she says. “My problem was that I’d be interested in a certain character, but they wouldn’t do anything. They’d just hang around in rooms, talking a lot. I remember reading Dennis Lehane’s Mystic River through the night without putting it down, and thinking: ‘That’s what I need to do.’ I realised that if I tied a character to a thriller-plot device, it would give me the discipline to keep moving the story forward.” Her debut was published in 2006, and won acclaim from critics and fellow writers, including Stephen King and Harlan Coben. Its central character was a troubled
reporter dispatched to her hometown to investigate the murder of two young girls. Flynn followed it up with 2009’s Dark Places, about a woman re-examining her family’s murder in a supposed Satanic ritual. Charlize Theron is now set to star
cho’ into our old top-loading VCR machine. I loved horror movies. Back when they had local broadcasting we had a ‘Friday Fright Night’ on television every week, which I’d be allowed to stay up for.” Unlike so many other genre novels, Gone Girl has memo-
‘Every marriage involves gamesmanship, little power-plays and squabbles and pettiness. I just amplified that - a lot’ in a Hollywood adaptation. Contrary to the impression her books might give, Flynn had a happy childhood, and suggests that her dark imagination developed as a reaction to her safe surroundings. “I was always fascinated with stories of mayhem and murder,” she recalls. Luckily for her, Flynn’s father was a film professor. “I have distinct memories of being nine or ten and him loading ‘Psy-
rable passages not only of action but also of reflection. In one such extract, Amy reflects on the myth of the so-called ‘Cool Girl’. Being a Cool Girl, she thinks, “means I am a hot, brilliant, funny woman who adores football, poker, dirty jokes, and burping, who plays video games, drinks cheap beer, loves threesomes and anal sex… Men actually think this girl exists. Maybe they’re fooled
because so many women are willing to pretend to be this girl.” Flynn admits to having once “invested way too much energy in trying to be a ‘Cool Girl’ herself. We often go into relationships playing an emotional con game with each other,” she says, explaining one of Gone Girl’s central themes. “You present your best self because you want the other person to like you, but there’s no getting around the fact that you’re tricking them, because you’re not presenting entirely who you are. Hopefully, once you figure out a person’s darker side and what makes them tick, you understand it and it makes them more interesting. But I liked the idea that you could drill down even deeper and hit crazy.” By sheer coincidence, Flynn and her lawyer husband Brett Nolan recently celebrated their five-year anniversary. They have a two-year-old son called Flynn. Nolan’s name appears in each of his wife’s books, and in Gone Girl he crops up as an anagram for Tanner Bolt, Nick’s slick, spray-tanned celebrity attorney. He’s not the least bit concerned by the comparison, Flynn says. “My husband has never been threatened by the weird stuff that comes out of my brain. This book obviously deals with marriage, but he said, ‘Don’t censor yourself, write what you need to write and we’ll deal with it later if anything’s too close to home’.” In the end, apparently, Nolan demanded almost no changes to the text, though he did object to Nick making a reference to gingham. “He thought a man like Nick wouldn’t know what that was.” The couple live in Ukrainian Village, a Chicago neighbourhood once populated by Eastern European immigrants who left behind a handful of magnificent churches to be admired by its new inhabitants – “writers, artists, hipsters and yuppies”. Flynn writes in the “mother-in-law apartment” in the basement of their home. “It’s halfway below ground so there’s very little stimuli, much less light. In wintertime the old floor oozes cold, so I hunch over my space heater like Bob Cratchit, typing. I could never work in a coffee house. I have to be in my dark little room.”

Review Theatre No Dispute, this one’s worth a watch! DIRECTOR Konstantinos Arvanitakis casually places his ‘and that’s how it’s done’ signature on THOC’s latest main stage production, Marivaux’s The Dispute, refreshingly gracing us with an inspiring modern staging of a 250-year-old script. The production, which hinges itself on the question ‘Who was the first to be unfaithful, man or woman?’ opens the debate by interviewing members of the audience, before guiding them into the theatre to observe an aristocratic experiment on human nature. The aristocrats, clad in 18th century outfits and appearing both onstage and onscreen, introduce us to four individuals raised in solitude, without the handicap of social discipline, who are now being thrown into a pit where they will confront each other for the first time. Niovi Charalambous effectively sets the tone as the narcissistic Egel, the dominant ‘experiment’ who first encounters her reflection, before meeting the male Azor (Prokopis Agathokleous), with whom she falls instantly and passionately in love. The feeling is mutual – and the two are certain that it will last no matter what. This unwavering certainty that comes with infatuation is one of the many faces of ‘love’ that the play seeks to dismantle. Unveiling the facade behind the human effort to present love as the element that differentiates us from the animal, and crediting this quality instead to social
upbringing institutes the daring premise on which the play provocatively pivots. While the script does allow for a darker reading, Arvanitakis’ approach favours the comic exaggeration of both male and female instincts. The acting is immaculately choreographed and allows two very different worlds to unfold and exist alongside each other. The child-like innocence with which the four ‘guinea pigs’ are presented effectively distinguishes their realm from that of the cool, confident aristocrats observing them. Set, costumes, lighting and multimedia merge to provide a highly professional field that takes full advantage of THOC’s impressive new premises. Overall the piece is a work of directorial genius; it is not an easy task to modernise a bicentennial script and still remain faithful to the original work. The only glitch in an otherwise flawless staging was the ending, which, while powerful, was not quite justified in its final moments. Nevertheless, the play’s closing image leaves much food for thought; an effect that is sadly not incorporated enough in this entertainment-driven industry. If more productions could aim to leave us with questions that might direct the course of our existence, rather than simply satisfying our fetish for distraction from our lives, theatre might stand a chance of fulfilling the purpose for which it was originally designed. The Dispute The Main Stage of THOC presents tragic comedy by Pierre de Marivaux. Until March 31. THOC New Theatre Building, 9 Gregori Afxentiou, Nicosia. Friday and Saturday at 8.30pm and Sunday 6pm. In Greek. The performances on March 30 and 31 will be with Greek and English surtitles. €12/10. Tel: 77-772717
Tomorrow Other Events Back in the spotlight PERFORMANCE art is having a renaissance at the moment, with a flood of prestigious exhibitions and museum initiatives now shedding new light on a medium often seen as a relic of the 1970s. It was originally used to describe any live artistic event that included poets, musicians, film makers, etc - in addition to visual artists. A loose definition would be an art form that combines visual art

EACH year, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8, connecting women around the world. On this day, thousands of events are held in honour of women who have made a difference in the world. The good news is that women have come a long way in the 100 years since the day was first established. But, one might say that IWD’s original concept has been undermined, morphing into some kind of cross between Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day with women being given patronising gifts of flowers and chocolates instead of it being a day to focus on real women’s issues. It’s important to remember the economic, political and social achievements of women. For the women of the world, the Day’s symbolism has a wider meaning: it’s an occasion to review how far they have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development. This year, Nicosia will be marking the occasion with a variety of events, two of which stand out, one academic, the other sports related, but both aiming to raise awareness of and celebrate women’s past and current contributions to society. The first event is an open discussion/presentation entitled ‘Women at The Forefront’ at the University of Cyprus Main Campus. ‘Women at The Forefront ‘is part of the advocacy and lobbying campaign of Active Dialogue Networks of the ENGAGE Phase II project, where people from different sectors and backgrounds contribute to the advocacy and lobbying actions of the project in order to foster positive change on the island. During the presentation, Board Member of the NGO Support Centre Nadia Karayianni will present the findings and suggestions of ENGAGE’s policy brief on Gender and Diversity and the challenges and vision of the people of both communities for fostering gender equality in Cyprus. Moreover, prominent women such as journalist and anchorwoman of the 8 o’clock news of CyBC,

While there’s been a resurgence in popularity of performance art in the US, local fans of the medium can look to the Art and Design Studio of the University of Nicosia, which is tomorrow hosting a lecture by performance artist Christina Georgiou. During the lecture she will talk about performance art, her artistic creation through this field and the First Cyprus International Performance Art Festival (CIPAF) as the founder, director and curator of this initiative. The festival will take place between May 29 and June 13 and brings established and emerging performance artists from around the globe to Cyprus while including a number of activities for both artists and the audience. If you want to take a more active, outdoorsy approach to this Women’s Day, then join the ‘sole sisters’ at the Women’s Day Wild Race this Women’s Day, in Athalassa Park. The event is open to women of all fitness levels, some may want to race, others may do it as a gentle walk, but all are welcome to enjoy the scenic route and the camaraderie. A 2km route for girls 6 years and over will follow part of the women’s route. The race starts at 4pm, with registration at the Athalassa Park hospital entrance car park from 3pm. Entry is free and there are some great prizes up for grabs including a boot camp/personal training session with Janet Anderson. The Princess of Montpensier (LTV3, 22.00) CyBC are deep in their annual ‘Francophonie Month’, showing the same French mini-series they showed last year. Francophones should head over to LTV3 instead, and this consistently intelligent period piece - though perhaps avoiding the trailer, which makes it look like any other genteel period drama. “A young heiress in love with a Duke, but sworn to a Prince,” it proclaims. “With no rights of her own, she will renounce her fate to reclaim her destiny,” it adds, throwing in a touch of Girl Power - but in fact the film’s unfashionable message is that our heroine’s pride is her undoing, her refusal to be told what to do wreck-
ing her happiness (she’s all set to open the door to her husband - at least till he foolishly tries to threaten her). Mélanie Thierry is our heroine, who is indeed in love with a Duke but sworn to a Prince - but the film is stolen by Raphael Personnaz as another Duke, the flamboyant Duc d’Anjou with his earring and campy appearance, the kind of character you seldom see in genteel period dramas. In French; made in 2010.
Think Like a Man (Novacinema1, 22.00) Think like a man but thwim like a fish, I always say (I’m sorry, that was totally uncalled-for). Then there’s this comedy, a two-hour infomercial for a self-help
book called Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man by Steve Harvey (who also appears in the movie, as himself) and four lovely ladies use the book to get inside the minds of their frankly impossible men, at least till the guys find out what the girls have been doing and decide to retaliate. The characters are stereotypes, so for instance one guy is commitment-shy (that’s “The Non-Committer vs. The Girl Who Wants the Ring”, to quote the chapter heading), another is a mummy’s boy and so on - and couples may nudge each other in ‘That’s you!’ fashion as they sit on the sofa, but in fact the comedy is so broad you’re unlikely to find many talking-points. Chris ‘Rihanna’ Brown heads the mostly African-American cast. Made in 2012.

As Venus angles to Pluto, your feelings about all sorts of relationships can intensify Aries. You might find yourself appreciating the bonds that were important in your formative years, as much as those you have now. But this planetary tie up can help you to understand better who you are, and what you need around key relationships.
Venus continues to occupy a very deep and intense sector of your horoscope, but this planet doesn’t just help us to think about romance, for it can also be to do with finances, and especially in its current location. Today, you may find yourself finalising something which can be helpful on this front, something which will create more certainty.
Someone in the family may be about to help you achieve something that is important to you. For example, they may help you with the deposit on a new home, or give you a really super gift. Then again, you can gain today simply from the appreciation people feel for you. How? Well, in the things they tell you and the feedback that they share.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
You are not someone who lets go of what you have easily. More than most zodiac signs your appreciation of security and continuity in all different strands of your life, only adds to this. Yet this is a time when you can find yourself growing inside, especially in terms of being more open to new people. One different type of person can be key.
If you are seeing someone or are in a long term relationship, today could lead to an unforgettable connection with them. Then again, if you are solo, your sense of what the upside of a close and intimate tie could bring to your life, is also enhanced. If you meet someone around now and really get on well, this could prove to be a significant involvement.
You can express yourself in a way today, which is almost certain to make people sit up and take notice of what you feel. This can see you balance the passion of your views, with a degree of diplomacy. When we have something important to share, it’s not always easy to get the delivery right, now I feel you’ll have little difficulty in doing so.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
This can be a significant day for property or business affairs. You can find yourself appreciating the nuances of the market. Linking with advice givers, or those with experience, especially those who can help you to improve your prospects, can be especially gratifying. In love, you can also be drawn to someone well established, or well heeled.
Your ruler Venus angles superbly to the planet of power Pluto. If you are fortunate enough to work somewhere where you are truly appreciated, your sense of involvement in this situation is given a real shot in the arm. If this is not the case, this aspect can be the nudge you need to go and try to find a job which would give you this.
Love and Aquarius! A noble combination, but not always an intimate combination. Today can be different, as the stars combine to put you in-touch with your most deeply held feelings. You may even show this in a more tangible way by giving a loved one a generous present, or treating them to a meal. A time for you to connect with your love power.
CANCER June 22 - July 22
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22
PISCES February 20 - March 20
Life is an education. Why? Well because we never stop learning, so even if you are not an avid fan of adding more and more academic qualifications, that doesn’t mean you are not gaining greater wisdom with the passage of time. Don’t underestimate what you know, especially about all things people related. You could show the way brilliantly today.
When you really connect to someone, your need for privacy can soon evaporate and you can show a much more open side of your nature. This could happen today. A truly enabling influence featuring one of your two personal planets can give greater depth to both your thoughts of affection and also in the way you convey this to someone you care for.
Friendship at its best is a very reassuring concept. When two people are in tune as individuals, but come together to achieve things, to entertain or support one another, it can be quite a thing. This is possible for you now. Then again, someone you have never thought of in romantic terms could take on a much more alluring vibe from now.

Sport Hingis tops list of 2013 Hall of Fame class By Larry Fine SWISS former world number one Martina Hingis, a winner of five grand slam singles titles, headlined the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s list of inductees for the 2013 class. Broadcaster Cliff Drysdale, tennis promoter Charlie Pasarell and former Romanian player Ion Tiriac will be inducted to the contributor category, the Newport, Rhode Island, hall said in a statement. Australian Thelma Coyne Long was previously named as an inductee to the master player category. Hingis, who won the Aus-
tralian Open and Wimbledon at the age of 16, quit tennis for the first time in 2003 at the age of 22, suffering from ankle injuries. She returned in late 2006 and finished the following year ranked seventh. However, she quit for a second time in 2007 under a cloud after she tested positive for cocaine at that year’s Wimbledon. Hingis served a two-year ban but maintained her innocence. The 32-year-old Swiss won a total of 15 grand slam titles including nine major doubles titles and one mixed doubles crown, and claimed 43 singles titles and 37 doubles titles. She won three successive
Australian Open singles titles from 1997 and also triumphed at Wimbledon and the US Open, and was a finalist at the French Open. In 1998, Hingis led the Swiss team to their only Fed Cup title. Long, 94, won a pair of Australian singles titles among 19 women’s grand slam titles, including doubles and mixed doubles between the 1930s and 1950s. Drysdale was a player during the 1960s and 1970s and then helped launch the ATP, serving as its first president. He later turned to broadcasting and for more than 30 years has been one of the sport’s most respected voices.
Pasarell, a former US number one and ATP cofounder, is most recently known as past director and managing partner of the Indian Wells tournament. He also partnered with Arthur Ashe and Sheridan Snyder to launch the (US) National Junior Tennis League. Tiriac, a former player turned tennis power broker, has been an influential leader in roles ranging from coach to player manager to tournament promoter. He spent 15 years on Romania’s Davis Cup team, helping them reach the finals three times. The Class of 2013 will be inducted on July 13 in Newport.
Swiss Miss: Martina Hingis won Wimbledon and the Australian Open at the age of 16
McIlroy regrets withdrawal It was not the right thing to do, says world No.1
IN BRIEF
RORY McIlroy has admitted withdrawing from the Honda Classic last week was “not the right thing to do”. McIlroy claimed he was “in a bad place mentally” after pulling out of the defence of his title midway through his second round, but later released a statement to say a sore wisdom tooth was the reason for his early exit. The world number one had played the opening eight holes of his round in seven over par, before finding a water hazard on the 18th and immediately quitting the tournament. He concedes, in hindsight, he made a mistake, telling Sports Illustrated: “It was a reactive decision. “What I should have done is take my drop, chip it on, try to make a five and play my hardest on the back nine, even if I shot 85. “What I did was not good for the tournament, not good for the kids and the fans who were out there
The Northern Irishman claimed he was ‘in a bad place mentally’ after pulling out of the defence of his title midway through his second round, but later said a sore wisdom tooth was the reason for his early exit watching me - it was not the right thing to do.” McIlroy has 14 days from the date of the withdrawal to submit written evidence to the PGA Tour to support his claim of medical grounds, with a fine or suspension possible if the body is not satisfied with his ex-
planation. It was his first ever withdrawal from a tournament as a professional, but follows on from losing in the first round of the Accenture Match Play Championship to Shane Lowry and missing the cut in the Abu Dhabi Championship in his first
event since signing a lucrative deal with Nike. The Northern Irishman, who is scheduled to play in the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral this weekend, has dismissed suggestions his poor form is down to his change in equipment. He added: “The driver and
the ball took some time to get used to, but I had weeks at Nike before the start of the year, and I feel comfortable with all the equipment. “The problem is, I’m bringing the club too upright on the backswing then dropping it in too much on the downswing.”
McLaren set to use Honda engines MCLAREN are to use Honda engines as the Japanese company returns to Formula 1 for the first time since 2008. Honda pulled out of F1 after years of poor results with its own team, which subsequently won the championship as Brawn in 2009 and is now Mercedes. But the engine manufacturer has decided to return because of next year’s introduction of turbo engines featuring energy recovery technology. Mercedes, which currently supplies McLaren’s engines, said it could not comment on its partner’s plans, but its F1 executive director Toto Wolff said: “We are looking for a long-term engine supplier relationship with McLarenMercedes.” McLaren has a contract with Mercedes with options for the team to renew for 2014 and 2015. McLaren are expected to take up only the first of those options. The McLaren-Honda deal revives a partnership that had great historical success. McLaren, with Honda as an engine supplier, dominated F1 in the late 1980s and early 1990s, winning four consecutive world drivers’ championships with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.
Blake to run at first Doha Diamond League meeting
Flacco signs record six-year contract with the Ravens
Carmelo injures knee, Knicks rally to beat Cavs
JAMAICA’S 100 metres world champion Yohan Blake is the first high-profile athlete to sign up for the opening Diamond League event in Doha, organisers said. The meeting on May 10 in Qatar is the first of the 14 Diamond League fixtures. “I have heard about the fast track in Doha and I hope to break the meeting record (9.85 seconds, Olusoji Fasuba, 2006),” he said. Blake, 23, won silver in the 100 and 200 behind compatriot Usain Bolt at the London 2012 Olympics and was part of the world record-breaking 4x100 gold medalwinning Jamaican quartet.
QUARTERBACK Joe Flacco signed a six-year contract to remain with the Baltimore Ravens, the team said, in a deal that reportedly makes the Super Bowl MVP the highest paid player in National Football League (NFL) history. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but various media reports said it was worth $120.6 million, moving him past New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and his six-year, $120 million deal, as the league’s top earner. In last month’s Super Bowl, Flacco completed 22-of-33 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns against the strong defence of the San Francisco 49ers in a 34-31 win.
All Star forward Carmelo Anthony went down with a knee injury but the New York Knicks deferred their concern long enough to overcome a 22-point deficit and beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 102-97. Anthony tumbled near midcourt after landing badly in the second quarter and did not return. He indicated after the game that the right knee was sore for some time, and the Knicks said their high-scoring forward will be evaluated this week. Trailing 52-30 at the time of Anthony’s injury, the visiting Knicks were able to trim the deficit to 12 by halftime and finally overpower Cleveland in the fourth quarter.

New Zealand must find the answers to England’s pace
Clarke vows to improve woeful Australia
Finn, Anderson ready to blow Kiwis away By Greg Stutchbury ENGLAND’S pace bowlers James Anderson and Steven Finn are likely to be crucial determinants in the Test series against New Zealand when the first of three matches begins at University Oval in Dunedin today. Both Anderson and Finn were rested in the four-day match against the New Zealand XI, which the hosts won by three wickets with less than two overs remaining, but proved more than destructive in the limited overs series prior to the Tests. Apart from the opening one-day match which New Zealand won, Anderson and Finn provided a masterclass in hostile fast bowling, giving the New Zealand batsmen little to hit on the small grounds while creating pressure and taking wickets. Anderson’s control of the seam position and the swing he extracted created doubt for New Zealand’s batsmen, while the tall Finn bowled back of a length and was menacingly accurate at top pace. As such, the duo, to be supported by Stuart Broad and possibly one of Graham Onions or Chris Woakes,
should prove a headache for New Zealand’s batsmen, whose frailties against elite fast bowling were ruthlessly exposed by the South African attack earlier this year. Brendon McCullum’s side slumped to innings defeats in both Tests on their tour of South Africa, and were skittled for 45 in Cape Town with Proteas paceman Vernon Philander taking five wickets for seven runs. South Africa seamer Dale Steyn did the damage in the second Test in Port Elizabeth, taking eight for 65. New Zealand’s batsmen have also had trouble occupying the crease for long periods to tire out opposing attacks, while giving their own bowlers a rest. Even century-making batsmen have scored their runs in a hurry and not lingered to post truly big scores to anchor their team’s innings. The Mike Hesson-coached side will also bring a rejigged top order to Dunedin, with the recalled Peter Fulton expected to partner debutant Hamish Rutherford. Left arm spinner Bruce Martin is also expected to make his debut at the age of 32, while all-rounder Doug Bracewell will undergo a late fitness test after he cut his foot on a glass
while clearing up following a house party. While England team director Andy Flower bemoaned a “sloppy” defeat in the four-day tour match, which saw the top order struggle in both innings, the visitors have enjoyed a relaxed build-up, marvelling at lakeside Queenstown’s natural beauty and undertaking touristy excursions. Captain Alastair Cook leads a strong and settled lineup galvanised by their breakthrough series win away to India, with only a minor selection headache over who should be the skipper’s opening partner. Pundits have clamoured for 22-year-old talent Joe Root to earn his second Test cap after an impressive 73 on debut against India in Nagpur, but Flower gave strong backing to four-Test opener Nick Compton, albeit without confirming his spot in Dunedin. “You’ve got to remember Joe Root has played one Test match,” Flower said after the Queenstown warmup. “I think everyone should keep a little calm about his prospects.” Following Dunedin, New Zealand host England in the second Test in Wellington from March 14, with the third and final Test in Auckland starting March 22.
Some-Finn special: Steven Finn warms up for today’s First Test with a net session in Dunedin
Wales ready for key fortnight By Andrew Baldock
Defending champions Wales have 10 wins from their last 12 starts in the competition
SHAUN Edwards says Wales are braced for “two huge weeks” as the reigning RBS 6 Nations champions embark on a concerted title defence. England’s comfortablysuperior points difference makes it a difficult scenario, even if Wales beat their archrivals in Cardiff on March 16. With Italy next on their agenda at Twickenham in four days, and Wales facing a testing Murrayfield clash against Scotland 24 hours earlier, the odds heavily favour England. But Wales, buoyed by successive away victories over France and Italy, have at least put themselves in title contention approaching the tournament’s business end. And their recent Six Nations record - 10 wins from the last 12 starts, including four successive away victories - suggests it would be a fool’s game to dismiss them. “It’s all systems go for two huge weeks,” Wales assistant
coach and defence specialist Edwards said. “These lads have been absolutely fantastic over the last few years. “Of the games I’ve been involved in in the Six Nations - and I honestly believe we are truly judged on the Six Nations - we’ve only lost one game in the last 11 (Edwards was suspended following an internal incident for the 2011 France Test that Wales lost 28-9). “If we can make that one in 13, then that has got to be a pretty impressive record. “I just think the whole of Wales comes alive in the Six Nations. That’s not to say we don’t want to go to Australia and win, but I do think the whole of Wales comes alive, Six Nations time. “We started off slowly against Ireland, but the second-half of that game and the last two games, particularly from my department, have been as good as I could expect from a rugby team. “We have only conceded three defensive points in two matches - the other 12 points have been scrum
penalties. “If we can continue in that form over the next two games, we are in with a chance.” Whatever happens in selection, Wales’ fourth win from the last five visits to Edinburgh is by no means guaranteed, especially with Scotland - now coached by former Wales boss Scott Johnson - on a roll after beating Italy and Ireland. “They’ve got momentum as well,” Edwards added. “It will be two evenly-matched teams going at it, and that’s what sport is about. “They are very resilient, which is a major attribute. “Every day I wake up I think I have got something to prove, and I am sure Scott is the same because he’s a competitor, like I am. “People like Scott Johnson are good for the game. They get newspaper space, particularly somewhere like Scotland where you get Celtic, Rangers and football being very dominant. “If people can get headlines for rugby, it’s obviously good for the game.”
CAPTAIN Michael Clarke conceded Australia were outplayed by India as they slumped to a comprehensive innings defeat in the second Test, but pledged “no stone will be left unturned” as they look to get back into the series. Australia were bowled out for just 131 on the fourth morning in Hyderabad to lose by an innings and 135 runs and go 2-0 down in the four-match series. The defeat means Australia become the first side in history to suffer an innings defeat having declared in their first innings, and Clarke admits they could have few complaints about the result. “I think India deserve a lot of credit, they outplayed us in all facets of the game in this Test match,” Clarke said. After declaring their first innings on 237 for nine on day one, Australia then saw hosts India run up a mammoth 503 in reply with Murali Vijay (167) and Cheteshwar Pujara (204) putting on 370 for the second wicket. Clarke wants his batsmen to take some lessons from that stand, with only three Australians getting beyond 30 in the entire Test. “I thought the partnership the two Indian players put on in the first innings was fantastic and I think we need to learn from that,” said Clarke, who top-scored for his side with 91 on the first day. “I think our batters have to take responsibility, we haven’t scored enough runs in our first innings in both our Test matches and that’s unacceptable in the best of batting conditions.” Australia have time to regroup following the loss with the third Test in Mohali not starting until March 14, and Clarke has promised his side will make full use of the time. “There will certainly be no break in between, there’ll be nothing but hard work. You don’t get better sitting on the couch that’s for sure. Man of the match Pujara and Vijay will take most of the plaudits for their performances in the Test, but India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was keen to share the praise around, both among his team and the coaching and backroom staff. “I think I’ve got a very good side, I’ve always said that,” he said. “I think it’s a collective effort and credit goes to each and every individual.” Dhoni was also keen to hail the performance of his bowling attack, which saw paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar set the tone with three important wickets on the first day and Ravichandran Ashwin finish things off with five for 63 in Australia’s second innings. Ravindra Jadeja, like fellow slow bowler Ashwin, also finished with six wickets in the match after taking three for 33 in both innings.

Sport Dawson: Bale is up there with the best By Paul Hirst
Carlos Tevez scored the only goal of the game for the champions at Villa Park, with boss Roberto Mancini saying his side need to win all 10 remaining games
City ‘need wins in title fight’ By John Curtis MANCHESTER City boss Roberto Mancini admits his side may have to win their remaining 10 matches to have a chance of retaining their Barclays Premier League title. A first half goal from Carlos Tevez proved sufficient to earn City a 1-0 win at Aston Villa on Monday night and again reduce the gap on leaders Manchester United to 12 points. Mancini repeated his claim that City will not give up on their crown without a fight after completing a double over relegation-threatened Villa. He said: “It is difficult because we have 30 points to play for and we need to try to win. “At the end, we will see what happens. In football everything can happen right up to the last second.
In football everything can happen right up to the last second, says Mancini “We probably need to win all 10 matches that are left. We need to win all the matches. “If they (United) lose three or four or five games.....it is difficult because they are too strong for this. “When you have to win always, it is difficult to win every game. But last year we did this. Why can’t we do it this year?” Mancini’s relief at City keeping their slim title hopes alive was tempered by another injury setback to midfielder Jack Rodwell. Rodwell suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury midway through the opening period and will be sidelined for “three to four
weeks”. Mancini said: “We are very sorry for Jack, because he is a good guy, a good player, but he is unlucky. It is his hamstring. “I think it is impossible to resolve his problem after six or seven months because he’s had this problem for five or six years and we need maybe more time. “How long will he be out? Maybe he will be back after the international break, three or four weeks. It is the same injury. “I am very sorry because he is a young player. He needs to improve but he has played very well against Chelsea and was playing very well against Aston Villa.”
Sergio Aguero was ruled out with a knee injury and will also miss the weekend FA Cup tie with Barnsley but Mancini is hopeful he will be available for the next league clash with Everton. Villa remain in the bottom three after a mistake by central defender Ciaran Clark gifted the goal to Tevez after he was dispossessed by Edin Dzeko. But Villa boss Paul Lambert leapt to the defence of the acting skipper. He said: “The goal was absolutely ridiculous really. You can’t make that sort of mistake. I wouldn’t have minded if someone had put one in the top corner with a bit of skill.
“But Ciaran has been great for me. He will put his hand up but he will come back strongly from it. “It is easy to be critical of Ciaran. The lad has been excellent all season. He will learn from it, he won’t make the same mistake again.” Villa midfielder Fabian Delph will be suspended for the next two vital games against fellow strugglers Reading and QPR after collecting his 10th booking of the season for handball. Lambert said: “Fabian has been playing extremely well, really well. But you are pressing forward, to try and get a goal back and things like that happen.” The Villa boss knows the significance of the next two matches in the context of their battle for survival. He said: “The next two games are massive for us. If we play like we did against City, we will give teams a fright, that’s for sure.”
Taylor: Players must plan for future
Gordon Taylor gave the example of Paul Gascoigne who has struggled to cope since retiring from the game
FOOTBALL union boss Gordon Taylor has disputed reports that three out of five former Premier League players go bankrupt. But Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association, has warned players they need to plan for the future to avoid financial difficulties when they stop playing. Taylor believes the number of ex-players going bankrupt is somewhere between 10 and 20 per cent and wants players to look to organisations like the PFA before they encounter problems. Taylor told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Footballers, with very few exceptions, aren’t going to earn as much money when they finish playing. “We encourage young players to save for the future, for when they retire.” A report in The Independent refers to research by XPro, a charity for ex-players, sug-
‘It’s about not expecting to have the same lifestyle’ gesting that three out of five Premier League players declare bankruptcy within five years of retirement, figures Taylor disputes. He said: “The fact is, as regards them going bankrupt, it’s nothing like those figures (three out of every five).” Taylor believes advisers and some agents are drawn by high salaries paid to players and many are badly advised. Taylor added: “I have to be careful what I say about agents, but they are there
during the good times and they’re a bit like butterflies in the bad times. “All the players come on to the PFA for advice when things have gone badly wrong. “It is about saving, it’s about being sensible, it’s about being careful, it’s about not expecting to have the same lifestyle. “It’s not everybody that can adapt. That exit strategy is quite important.” Taylor pointed to former player Paul Gascoigne who has struggled to cope since retiring from the game and suffered with alcoholism and health problems. “A prime example would be the likes of Paul Gascoigne who found it very difficult to adjust to life after football.” Taylor said players should take PFA courses on work in the media and other trades as alternative employment as not all would find jobs as managers or coaches.
TOTTENHAM captain Michael Dawson thinks there is no better player in the world right now than Gareth Bale. Bale scored his 49th goal for Tottenham on Sunday to help his team to a moraleboosting 2-1 derby win over Arsenal at White Hart Lane. The strike against the Gunners was his 20th of a fine season, which has seen him compared to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Some critics, including Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, claim Bale is not in the same class as Ronaldo, who has scored 33 goals for Madrid this season, and three-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi, but Dawson disagrees. “Gaz is up there with Ronaldo and Messi in terms of ability - he’s one of the best players in the world at the moment, and probably the best in the world for me right now,” Dawson said in a promotional interview for Topman. “Some of the things he does would have Ronaldo blush. His goal this season against Norwich where he picked the ball up in his own half and dribbled past all those players before having the calm and composure to put in the bottom corner... He’s been brilliant and credit to him.” Bale has played a huge part in lifting Tottenham up to third place recently, scoring nine times in his last eight matches. Although he took his goal superbly on Sunday, Tottenham’s victory owed more to some lion-hearted defending from Dawson and his partner at the back Jan Vertonghen. While Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker resembled statues at the other end of the pitch, Dawson and Vertonghen were at the top of their game, nullifying the threat posed by Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud with some superb last-ditch tackling. “He has been brilliant from day one,” Dawson said of Vertonghen, who snubbed Arsenal to move to Spurs last summer for £10 milllion. Spirits are high in the Spurs camp following Sunday’s win, which put the team seven points ahead of Arsenal, but Dawson knows how his men cannot think they have secured Champions League qualification just yet. Tricky games against Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Everton remain for Andre Villas-Boas’ side, who will also need no reminder that they surrendered a place in the Champions League last season by letting a 10-point lead over Arsenal slip in the home straight.

Pirlo’s Milan nightmare keeps Juventus feet on the ground
Vilanova could be back with Barca soon
Celtic need to re-write the record books
By Iain Rogers
By Brian Homewood JUVENTUS playmaker Andrea Pirlo could be forgiven for having the 2005 Champions League final on his mind when the Italian side take a 3-0 advantage into their last16 second-leg clash against Celtic tonight. Pirlo was in the shellshocked AC Milan team who blew a 3-0 half-time lead against Liverpool before losing on penalties in one of the most astonishing European finals in history. Celtic, beaten 3-0 at home, need to end Juve’s 17-match unbeaten European run and re-write the Champions League record books when they visit the Italian champions but Pirlo, a 2006 World Cup winner with Italy, has seen it all. “I’ve been in football long enough to know miracles happen. I can still remember the Champions League final against Liverpool,” the 33year-old told Scottish paper the Daily Record after the first leg. “Liverpool scored three goals in just a half, whereas Celtic have a whole game. It would be dangerous to consider that the tie is won yet.” The Scottish team could get inspiration from South America’s Libertadores Cup where Mexican side America pulled off a remarkable win against Brazil’s Flamengo at
Celtic, beaten 3-0 at home, need to end Juve’s 17-match unbeaten European run when they visit the Italian champions but Andrea Pirlo, a 2006 World Cup winner with Italy, has seen it all and is taking nothing for granted the Maracana stadium five years ago. Trailing 4-2 from the home leg, the Mexicans silenced the famous arena with a 3-0 win regarded as one of the greatest humiliations in Flamengo’s history. A quick look at UEFA statistics, however, highlights the immensity of the task facing Celtic at the Juventus Stadium. Only two teams have come back from losing the first leg at home to win a tie in the knockout stages of the Champions League since the competition started 21 years
ago. Inter Milan did it two seasons ago, when they lost 1-0 at home to Bayern Munich but won 3-2 away to go through on away goals, and Ajax pulled off a similar fightback against Panathinaikos back in 1995-96. Like Inter, the Dutch side had only a one-goal deficit to make up, compared to Celtic’s three. If that were not enough, Celtic are also facing a team who have not lost in European competition for three years, when they were sunk 4-1 by Fulham in the Europa
League. Juventus were knocked out of the following year’s Europa League without losing any of their 10 games and are unbeaten after seven matches in the current campaign. The Serie A leaders are leaving nothing to chance, although coach Antonio Conte might be tempted to rest Arturo Vidal, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Claudio Marchisio who are one yellow card from suspension. Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini broke with the usual convention, under which players refuse to talk about
potential opponents in the next round, by saying he wanted to avoid Porto in the quarter-finals. “They are little known but capable of anything, because they have players of great value,” he said. “But I really think Italian football can go a long way in Europe.” Celtic will be without captain Scott Brown who has a thigh injury and he will be joined on the sidelines by defender Mikael Lustig who has bone bruising. Celtic warmed up for the match with a 2-1 Scottish Cup win over St Mirren.
PSG host Valencia keen to show they are made for Europe By Julien Pretot
David Beckham could make his first Champions League appearance since 2010 with AC Milan
LEONARDO’S assertion that Paris St Germain are made for the Champions League but not for low-key Ligue 1 matches could backfire tonight if they do not show a dramatic improvement against Valencia in a last 16 second leg. Sports director Leonardo explained PSG’s embarrassing 1-0 league defeat at battling 10man Reims on Saturday by saying: “Maybe we have a team made for Europe, based on talent and passing quality, not for that kind of game.” PSG indeed looked a different side from the one who beat Valencia 2-1 away in the first leg and their chances of success in today’s home game have been hurt by suspensions to striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and midfielder Marco Verratti. The Ligue l leaders’ defeat by Reims was the second in a row against a lowly team after they were humbled 3-2 by Sochaux before back-toback wins against arch rivals Marseille in the league and French Cup. PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti blamed a bad pitch at Reims for the loss but there will be no excuses on their Parc des Princes turf, where
37-year-old David Beckham could make his first Champions League appearance since 2010 with AC Milan. The former England captain, who signed a short-term deal with PSG in January, could start the match unless Ancelotti decides to field Clement Chantome or Thiago Motta returns from injury. The Italian coach is likely to change his centre back pairing with captain Thiago Silva in the running to feature for the first time in more than seven weeks after recovering from a thigh problem. The Brazilian’s return would be a boost to PSG, who could have all but sealed their last-eight qualification in Valencia if they had made more of their domination before allowing the Spaniards to pull a goal back late on. Valencia are missing usual centre backs Adil Rami and Ricardo Costa. “We know how Paris play. I watched their last two games and they often rely on the counter attack, allowing the other team to have the ball and breaking very well,” Valencia full back Jeremy Mathieu said. “Valencia’s tactics are to pressure as much as possible and spend as much time in the opponent’s half as we can,” added the Frenchman.
BARCELONA coach Tito Vilanova may have finished his cancer treatment in New York and be back with the squad by the end of March, president Sandro Rosell said. Vilanova, 44, needed a second round of surgery in December following an operation to remove a tumour from his saliva glands in November 2011 and his assistant Jordi Roura has taken charge until he is well enough to return. Although they are still 11 points clear at the top of La Liga, Barca have stuttered in recent weeks - losing 2-0 at AC Milan in last month’s Champions League last 16, first leg and going down twice to arch rivals Real Madrid last week. Rosell said the coach was midway through a course of chemo- and radiotherapy and when he visited him in New York last week was “in very good spirits” and “very involved in the day to day activities of the club”. “There is no doubt that a group gets weaker when they lose their leader,” Rosell told a news conference following a routine meeting of the Catalan club’s board of directors. “Sports psychologists say, and I suppose there is a scientific explanation to it, that after 30 days the group’s shape weakens,” he added. “We have been without our leader for a long time now and it is normal to see this happening. “He is longing to come back, hoping for the process to finish, which is due at the end of March. “The other day he told me he was happy because he could start the countdown as he is over half of the process and he has less than 50 percent of it left. “That is very good for his state of mind. He wants to come back and we want him back.” Some media reports in Spain have suggested Barca were considering bringing in a temporary replacement coach but an emotional Rosell categorically ruled it out. “The absolute priority of the club this season is for Tito Vilanova to get his health back and everything else is of secondary importance,” he said. “I want to thank Roura for his work, he is a hero. We must thank him enormously for what he is doing because it was not his responsibility. “Also the players who are suffering this burden and are still top of the league. “Nothing will change here until Tito returns even if it costs us all our titles this season. “I would consider it a successful season if Tito was back to full health by the end of it.”

Ronaldo return knocks out Manchester United Referee denies Red Devils a place in final eight with harsh Nani red card By Simon Stone
T
EN-man Manchester United left Old Trafford seething with injustice as they crashed out of the Champions League in controversial fashion last night. A night that began with the shock of Wayne Rooney’s omission, ended in bitter frustration and recrimination as Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo sent Real Madrid into the last eight. It was the controversial dismissal of Nani for a secondhalf foul on Alvaro Arbeloa that was the talking point. At the time, United were leading through Sergio Ramos’ own-goal and 2-1 up in the tie. The pivotal decision of Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir turned all those hopes to dust, left Rio Ferdinand applauding sarcastically after it was all over and Jose Mourinho celebrating, the former Chelsea boss offering a fuming Sir Alex Ferguson a consoling pat before heading down the tunnel before the final whistle. The bombshell of Rooney’s omission and an ovation for Ronaldo as loud and as long as any home player has received this season set the scene for the match. At 39, Giggs was not the obvious choice to shackle Ronaldo. But the Welshman did a magnificent job. And he was not restricted to defensive duties either. Though opportunities for both sides were limited, Giggs did find time to get forward, delivering one brilliant cross for Robin van Persie, whose acrobatic attempt to finish was blocked by Sergio Ramos. If Giggs excelled, Danny Welbeck was the biggest threat, just as he had been in the first-leg.
Manchester United 1 Real Madrid 2 Aggregate 2-3 His running from deep positions caused Real a problem, especially out wide. It was Welbeck who provided that crossing opportunity for Giggs, having earlier presented Nani with a similar chance, which Fabio Coentrao flicked away before the veteran Welshman could pounce. The one flaw in Welbeck’s game is a lack of goals. His effort in Spain was one of only two this season, and twice he wasted openings to break the deadlock. The first came after Nemanja Vidic soared to meet Van Persie’s corner, only for his thundering header to cannon back off a post, straight to Welbeck, who prodded the rebound straight at Diego Lopez.
REBOUND Welbeck’s second chance was also on the rebound, after Lopez had parried an instinctive effort from Van Persie. The England man should have made Lopez work. Instead he drove his shot into the ground, which allowed the visitors’ keeper to save. Real had even fewer sights of United’s net. Gonzalo Higuain sent a decent chance wide in the opening stages but other than that, there was always a home defender in the way. Ronaldo, after his hearttouching reaction to the reception he received, was extremely subdued, failing to make any impression with a free-kick perfectly located for one of those jawdropping efforts he seems
to have made an art form. The loss of Angel Di Maria just before the interval forced Mourinho into a tactical reshuffle which Real were still adjusting to when United struck. Rafael’s surge to the edge of the box had Real floundering and although Van Persie’s shot was deflected away from goal, Nani had the awareness and strength to shrug Raphael Varane off it. Welbeck got the faintest of touches to the Portugal winger’s cross but it was enough to ensure Ramos’ was firm enough to send it rolling into the net. When Nani challenged Arbeloa for a bouncing ball inside his own half, he seemed committed and nothing more. Cakir deemed it dangerous and after waiting until the winger recovered from a non-existent injury, out came the red card. Nani was incredulous. Ferguson went ballistic. And with good reason. Repelling Real with 11 men had been tough, with 10 it was bordering on the impossible. Though they hung on grimly, with Rafael seeming to keep a goalbound Higuain header out with his arm, it took the visitors just 11 minutes to turn the entire tie on its head. Modric struck first, with a viciously curling effort from 25 yards. Three minutes later Mesut Ozil found Higuain, whose cross was turned home at the far post by the man United must have known would score. The hopeless search for goals forced the 10-men down to the other end. Rooney, by now a potential saviour, had a chance which he lifted over the bar from six yards.
Premier League stars to swing in Sin City By Charles Sale THE biggest names in the Barclays Premier League are being invited to play in a Ryder Cup-style golf competition between England and the Rest of the World in Las Vegas. The Professional Footballers Golf Tournament at the renowned Shadow Creek course over three days starting on June 16 will need marquee football involvement to make it a success. Those approached include Steven Gerrard, Carlos Tevez, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gareth Bale, Joe Hart, James Milner, Daniel Agger, Phil Jones and David Beckham.
BRAINCHILD The competition was the brainchild of International Football Management, the football arm of Chubby Chandler’s sports agency. The 16-strong sides playing fourballs and singles will compete for the Westwood Cup, named after Chandler’s long-time client Lee, who is due to present the trophy two days after the end of the US Open. The event is being televised by IMG Media, who plan to sell two one-hour programmes, so the players will have to take it seriously. But the chance to party in Sin City at the MGM Grand, Aria and Bellagio hotels will be as much an attraction as the chance to play on an exclusive £300a-round course. Dazzling Dortmund cruise past Shakhtar into the last eight FORMER European Cup winners Borussia Dortmund marched into the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 15 years by beating Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 last night to advance 5-2 on aggregate. First-half goals from central defender Felipe Santana, a replacement for Mats Hummels, and Mario Goetze effectively killed off the tie following the 2-2 first-leg draw in Ukraine in February.
Jakub Blaszczykowski’s close-range effort after 59 minutes buried any lingering hopes for Shakhtar who had come out fighting in the second half. The Bundesliga champions have now won every home game in the competition this season after also beating Real Madrid, Ajax Amsterdam and Manchester City in the group stage. The 1997 Champions League winners, who have
Borussia Dortmund 3 Shakhtar Donetsk 0 Aggregate 5-2 played second fiddle to Bayern Munich in Germany this season, quickly took control of the game. Striker Robert Lewandowski almost put them in front when Goetze sent him through with a defence-
splitting pass and the Polish international’s shot was blocked by keeper Andriy Pyatov. The hosts kept up the pressure but their finishing was less than clinical. There was nothing complicated about Santana’s header in the 31st minute, the Brazilian rising high above marker Yaroslav Rakitskiy to nod in a corner at the near post. Goetze made it 2-0 in the 37th minute when he tapped
in a well-timed Lewandowski cross with Shakhtar defenders again exposed. The Ukrainians almost pulled one back on the restart with substitute Douglas Costa firing narrowly wide as the visitors poured forward in search of a quick goal. Pyatov, though, spilled a tame shot from Ilkay Guendogan into the path of Blaszczykowski and he grabbed Dortmund’s third goal.
