COURSE DESCRIPTION This course further explores visual language and relationships, including the interaction of typography and imagery, graphic design history, sustainable design and social responsibility. Students solve design problems and learn how to present to an audience. Students will learn visual communications design processes and acquire a foundation of context sensibility and social responsibility. Prerequisites: ART 251 and ART 351

COURSE Objectives To research, collaborate, conceptualize, produce and present professionally To develop visual, verbal, and written responses to visual phenomena To experience complete editorial design from cover to interior layout To explore branding and visual identity To enhance acquired skills in Bridge, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat

Your work will be assessed in this structure: Projects 90% + Course management 10%. Each project is assessed with 50% Final Product + 25% Process + 25% Professionalism. Some detailed info are below: (50%) PRODUCT ASSESSMENT OF THE FINAL ARTIFACT CONCEPT Originality of the idea behind the design artifact. Ability to discover a unique solution. Have you created a communicative and original solution? COMMUNICATION APPROPRIATENESS The fit between the formal concept, the audience and the context for which it is designed. Does it meet the needs of the audience? CREATIVITY Ability to find a unique solution using appropriate design principles and approaches. Are you using color, image, and/or typography imaginatively? VISUAL /SPATIAL ORGANIZATION/LAYOUT Relationship between the information hierarchy and the visual hierarchy of elements in the composition. Does the layout help support communication? CRAFTSMANSHIP/DETAIL MASTER The precision of the final artifact. Attention to details, project parameters, technical processes, and control of medium so that craft does not interfere with communication and function. Have you paid attention to the smallest of details in the final outcome? (25%) PROCESS ASSESSMENT OF THE PROCESS RESEARCH Scope and quality of search for relevant information that enhances understanding of the issues embedded within the assignment. Have you completed research & applied it to the final artifact? DESIGN JOURNAL Ability to map ideas, rank priorities, and define a personal challenge within the assignment. EXPLORATION OF MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS Iteration and execution of each new solution. Ability to think laterally, to explore more than one approach and view from a variety of perspectives. DEVELOPMENT OF IDEAS ACROSS TIME Progression of ideas, refinement of form, and sustained work across time. APPROACH Use of appropriate technical strategies and methods for solving problems. STUDENT COMMITTEE | You are encouraged to create a team to handle various tasks in the course such as catalog, invitation, exhibition, etc. PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE | It's an art to manage a course with creative skills. Plan for your own process and managing solutions. Professionally interact with one another. Only constructive criticism is allowed, not personal. ATTENDANCE | 3 lates (over 10 min.) considered as 1 absence. 3 absences without consultation deserve F. For more information on attendance please refers to ‘Student Handbook 2006-2007’ (pg.48). You must show up on time. Lectures and demonstrations are given at the beginning of class. | If you miss any classes, or instructions, you are responsible to find out from your classmates what you missed. | If documents were given out during the class it is your responsibility to ask me for the documents – they will not always be posted on Blackboard. PROJECT SUBMISSION | Students are required to submit a digital copy of all their class work. You must follow instructions in class projects and be prepared to present and discuss your work on time.
