PROJECT SUMMARY For 75 years, Mountview has been one of the UK’s most innovative and inclusive drama schools. Founded by Peter Coxhead in 1945, we have nurtured generations of talented performers, production artists, directors, musical directors and creative producers, and our student body today consists of almost 500 students on foundation, BA and MA courses. Alongside our vocational courses, we deliver a range of outreach and education programmes to the community. These include the Bridge Project, which takes professional drama workshops into local schools, and our flagship outreach programme Generation N*xt, which welcomes hundreds of young people to our home each week to take part in creative classes in acting, dance and voice work. We believe that everyone should have the chance to develop performance skills through creative activities, whether to pursue a career in the arts or to enrich everyday life.

OUR NEED FOR A NEW HOME For nearly 25 years, Mountview’s facilities were located in temporary buildings in Wood Green, North London. These premises were not fit for purpose, and unlike peer drama training facilities, they did not include a theatre, costing Mountview over £250,000 per year to operate as an itinerate theatre company. The campus was spread over five sites, had sub-standard facilities, was not fully accessible and lacked the space required to expand our outreach work with young people and the community. With no security of tenure and rents rising to £1 million in 2017/18 - having been half that amount in 2014 - the situation became untenable.

Mountview have created a stunning new home and now has the opportunity to work with the aesthetic of Carl Turner’s bold building design to create new experiences for the audiences coming to Mountview’s main auditorium and the Backstage Theatre. The challenge is in turning the elegant contemporary minimalism daytime feeling of the drama school into a welcoming, warm place for the evening’s theatre productions.
