Publisher’s Message Keith J. Davis, Sr. My Take on Community-Builders I am especially excited about this issue and the whole notion of Community-Builders. It is a reflection of the spirit I share with many of the entrepreneurs presented on these pages. They represent a diverse selection of businesspeople that live their passion and define prosperity on their own terms. The nature, size and type of their businesses vary immensely, but their minds are of common purpose - to make a difference in the lives of others. They have set their goals, believed in themselves, and pursued their dreams and passions. They have taken charge and made it happen. Some are wealthy in cash profits, others are less so, but all have benefited and are wealthy in terms of inner satisfaction. They have built something from a thought, a prayer, and a desire to share their own future. They have a sense of fulfillment that is immeasurable. Here you will see dynamic people who have found their niche as individuals, in their respective business or profession, or who became a brand in their own right. Some featured in this issue found a path to entrepreneurship af-

Limitless Possibilities Editor-In-Chief Joie D. Rasberry Finding Your Purpose Each person profiled in this issue is living a life filled with unending possibility. Like the individuals you will read about, we have to clear away the subconscious patterns and beliefs that undermine our best intentions and weaken our trust in the essential goodness of others. We must learn to embrace our own power and intuition. Instead, we must stay committed to learning, to finding the lesson in change, even as we devise new strategies for moving our lives forward. When we approach our lives in this way, we increase our energy, heighten our creativity and deepen our capacity for joy. We find, at last, the wisdom and the will to do the work we were created to do. Names such as Aaron Glenn and Jason Medlock, Sharon Phillips, Dr. Thomas F. Freeman, Dr. Grace Butler, Council Member Carol Alvarado, Pastor Terrance H. Johnson, Deacon Ramone Harper, Reggie Wiley, Danny McKinney, Attorney’s Felix Chevalier and Bernadette Duffey, Joshua Stephens, Blake Berry, Carrie M. Dixon, Dr. Laureen Wishom, Donna Lewis, Felicia York Wyatt and Abigail Matamoras are the real hero’s in the community. The extraordinary men and women who share their

They may even change your life, as they have mine. Their stories, and the wisdom and passion for living they gained on the roads they have traveled speak volumes, while catapulting each of us to heights unknown. When interviewing them, they reminded me of what we too often forget: Life is a sacred journey. God did not send any of us here weak or incomplete. Instead, the Creator of the universe has given us power to choose our path over and over again. This power to choose is the divine force in each of us, and we must learn to respect and use it continuously to set our course right. The individuals in this issue represent every age and stage of life. Some are young and others are old, with many falling in between. Some are name brands while many you will learn about for the very first time. And that is the joy of this publication. As entrepreneurs, we understand that it is a mixture of celebrities and everyday folk who do what they do and does it well, that makes for an interesting publication.

The unique perspective on how to achieve a life of balance and harmony, a life that hones the genius in each of us, fortifies me all the more. What I love so much about life is that anything is always possible. It’s never too late. It doesn’t matter what side of the track you are from. There are so many excuses that we use that really do not matter as it relates to what you can do with your life. The wonderful thing is that we can always change and correct our course. The wisdom provided from other entrepreneurs helps us remember that the only place on earth where infinite growth is possible is within us. Therefore, the pathway to a more radiant life is always possible. “In order to rebuild a community, one must be willing to rebuild and invest in the people, because the people are the community,” states Kenneth Gamble, producer and song writer. The above mentioned men and women continue to build and rebuild on a daily basis.

It is my hope that you will open your hearts and minds to your own full measure of finding your purpose. Ask yourself as I do daily, “Why am I here?” Go forward from that moment on and live each day as if you are trying to answer that I must say that it has been a happy task to question. interview, write, replay tapes and compile the stories of such fascinating people. The Real Value of an MBA: It’s Not Business, It’s Personal By Carrie M. Dixon A graduate degree, a Masters in Business Administration in particular, is often associated with mega-successful, prestigious careers. Individuals earning the highly coveted M.B.A. degree are expected to be representatives of the corporate world’s elite class. Sources say an M.B.A. will “solidify your quantitative abilities, strengthen your strategic thinking, teach you to analyze complex financial data and boost your marketing savvy.” Those three letters function as a “login ID” for a powerful network of career advancement resources. Studies have shown that the degree pays for itself in terms of the opportunities available upon completion. Research compiled by the Employment Policy Foundation in Washington, D.C., shows the lifetime earnings of an employed graduate of an M.B.A. program are estimated at $4.4 million. That is nearly twice as much when compared to what is projected for those completing only a bachelor’s degree. What about the pay-offs studies cannot measure? The earnings projection, alone, might be

enough to convince a potential student to enroll in an accredited M.B.A. program. Oddly enough, that had no effect on my decision to pursue a graduate degree. The estimated $4.4 million dollar pay-off is a very impressive reward; the personal rewards, however, are priceless. Ironically, for me, earning a graduate business degree has very little to do with business. It is personal. Knowledge is power. For me it is also a source of sheer pleasure, pride, and personal fulfillment. I am a quietly competitive person - the toughest opponent I have ever faced. One of the best feelings in the world is when the “new” me squares off against the “old” me and wins. The latest challenge is being staged on the battlefield of this M.B.A. program. This time it is a little different. The stakes are higher. Research shows that of 13 million black women age 18 and over, only half a percent have professional degrees. I want to be a member of that elite class. I needed this program to challenge me to step out of my comfort zone. I am fully aware that the pursuit of this degree is going to present numerous challenges and sacrifices. I will have to surrender the freedom of watching television, shopping, and visiting with friends for hours at a time. I also know that

it will not cure all of life’s ills. The Employment Policy Foundation’s research, coupled with those statistics that show that, as “your level of education increases, your likelihood of getting laid off drops as well” are very optimistic. However, I am equally aware of the research that shows that earning an M.B.A. is not a guarantee of job security. I am not troubled. My primary quest is not to garner a better salary or secure a better position, but to become a better me. Why an M.B.A.? Simply put, because I am worth it.

ARE YOU REACTIVE OR PROACTIVE? By: Dr. Laureen Wishom In a study on time effectiveness, every one-minute spent in planning resulted in reducing the time required to complete an activity or project by three to four minutes. Spending ten minutes in planning can reduce project completion time by thirty to forty minutes, while one hour in planning can reduce completion time by three to four hours. If properly utilized, fifteen minutes of planning can effectively control your time for an entire day. Planning is one of the keys to managing your priorities and achieving business success. Listed below are some tips for effective planning: • • • • • • •

Know your prime time and energy level. Respect, protect and direct your prime time. Have clearly defined goals and objectives. Implement an action plan for all projects. Have a method to track appointments and commitments. Focus on and complete one or two short-term activities that are likely to produce the biggest results and provide short-term success. Be prepared to make major changes. Be creative by finding and introducing different ways of doing things.

Managing your time efficiently and the utilization of time saving techniques are very important when the clock is ticking. Below are some tips that will assist is setting proper priorities: •

short-term urgent tasks will always use up all your time unless you plan to spend it otherwise. • When you have a multitude of things to do, go through them quickly and make a list of what you need to do, by when and by whom. After completion of the list, handle each piece of paper only once. Do not start a task, do a portion of it, then put it back on the pile. You end up working harder not smarter. Don’t forget, whenever possible delegate the task to someone else. • Don’t start lots of tasks at the same time - even if you can handle multiple tasks at the same time. This is not the most effective or efficient way of dealing with these tasks. Multi-tasking is not always good in all situations. • Manage your emails and phone calls or else they will manage you. Ideally, you should check emails and message at planned times and avoid continuous notification of incoming emails. There are two words that describe an individual’s approach to planning and to life. You can either be “reactive” or “proactive”. Reactive people wait for things to happen and then they respond. Proactive people take charge of their lives through planning, sound decision-making and successful project execution. More than 80% of all persons fall into the “reactive” category leaving 20% or less in the “proactive” category. If you decide to be proactive, now is the time to escalate your planning skills to a higher level. The bottom line is: if your plan includes success, it is time to plan your work and work your plan. Media Planning Develop effective advertising programs, regardless of the medium. By Donna Lewis Houston Chronicle Classified Account Executive So you have a new business or an established business and you need to generate more revenue. What should you do? Advertise, promote, market! But don’t do it blindly. Make a plan and work it. Here’s how. 1. Understand your target customer. Understand who your primary and secondary markets specifically encompass. Time and money spent targeting the wrong audience is wasted. 2. Determine your advertising strategy. Are you looking for shortterm or long-term goals? Many studies reinforce the idea that most

advertising messages require a frequency of at least three exposures for consumers to have enough information to make a buying decision. Depending on your business objectives, your best results may be accomplished with either horizontal or vertical frequency. A horizontal frequency strategy is most suited for service- and imageoriented advertisers who want to build top- of- mind awareness or for those desiring a conservative approach to protect current market position. This strategy suggests scheduling fewer advertisements per week, over an extended period with the frequency figured cumulatively at the end of the schedule. A vertical frequency strategy is most suited for retail- and action-oriented advertisers who want to move product or schedule services in a very short period of time. It is also effective for promotional events, peak selling seasons, new businesses

and intense competition. This is a very aggressive strategy designed for quick results to strengthen a market position. These schedules typically include heavy advertising within a short period – an advertising blitz. 3. Evaluate the media options to accomplish your objective. Newspapers, direct mail, radio, internet, cable, magazines? Evaluate each advertising vehicle by reviewing its selling strengths and completing a cost comparison analysis. 4. Match your target market with the medium’s audience. Match the media meeting your strategy goals with demographic information to narrow the available advertising choices. 5. Commit to a sound advertising plan. Assemble the most appropriate media mix based on your allocated budget and campaign goals. Don’t put all of your advertising dollars in one medium. Select a medium for its reach, frequency and targeting capabilities. Reach is the percentage of unduplicated audience reached by an advertising

message; and frequency, calculated as the average number of times a person is exposed to an advertising message, is significant in building the necessary retention to ensure a buying decision from the targeted audience. Typically, media that have targeting abilities – the ability to directly send a message to a defined audience – also demonstrate strong frequency characteristics. In the end, careful thought and focused planning will help you to make the most of your advertising dollars. Boost your business by spreading the word about what you have to offer to the right audience for your product or service.

An Executive Assistant who is Much More than Meets the Eye By: Joie Rasberry When someone thinks of an executive assistant, he thinks of someone who makes coffee, types letters, answers phone calls and keeps schedules. Ask the management and staff of 3131 Properties and its subsidiaries, and they will tell you that Felicia York-Wyatt is much more than that. Felicia began with the company a year ago and has not looked back. She started her career as a degreed accountant over 12 years ago. She knew that she was destined for much more than numbers. She stepped out on faith and quit her above average paying job recently with one of Houston’s leading energy companies, to aggressively pursue with her Master of Communications in public relations from the University of Houston. She is currently working on her thesis. After losing both parents prematurely to heart disease (mother-age 27 & father-age 39), she took great interest in health literacy in the African American community. She combines her desire to excel in the public relations field with her desire to make an impact in the African American community. Felicia continues to look for opportunities to make a difference in the community in any capacity. It truly began when she made a lifetime commitment to a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, a pubic service sorority. She is also the assistant youth director at her church in Northwest Houston. Felicia did not back down on another opportunity to help in the community when she worked with the Aaron Glenn Character Camp 2004 assisting the PR & Marketing person. What she didn’t know was that this job would lead to a wonderful opportunity to make a greater impact in the community. Aaron Glenn, CEO of 3131 Properties and Jason Medlock, President of 3131 Properties, LTD took notice of Felicia’s skills and offered her a position as their executive assistant. Felicia is definitely making an impact in the African American community. She is the person who takes care of administrative and financial matters for one of Houston’s up and coming real estate development companies, 3131 Properties and its subsidiaries. This is the same company who will build 20 Williams Fried Chicken Restaurants in the next five years offering thousands of jobs to various communities during the same time frame. She is married with two kids.

Rose Tucker Proves the Harder You Are Polished, the Brighter You Will Shine By: Joie Rasberry Rose Tucker is a fascinating compilation of gut, wit, humor, inspiration and business savvy. Filled with rich and powerful reflections of her childhood, Tucker grew up in a household with twelve brothers and sisters in Georgia. Tucker is owner of Phantommktg.com in Houston, Texas, a full service online Real Estate marketing directory. Tucker’s creative and non-traditional approach to doing business, as well as her gift of persuasive oral communication, helps her provide a wealth of services for clients who are eager to do business in the real estate industry. Tucker will be the first to admit that it was never her intention to make Houston her home. “Opportunities are so plentiful here,” she states, making Texas a difficult place to leave. Not only did she make Houston her home, she hit the ground with fervor, landing lucrative directorship positions in sales, marketing and pubic relations. Partnering with Adrian Cole, CEO of Phantom Marketing, Tucker adds a dimension that propels both businesses beyond what they initially imagined. “No matter how great your blessings, beauty, intelligence and talents, you will face adversity that test your very foundation,” states Tucker. She admits that though what she does may look simple, it was born out of a desire to want more, to achieve against the odds and to trust in God’s divine direction. As a single parent, Tucker acknowledges that much of what she does, as well as the example and legacy she hopes to leave is for her children. “I want my son and daughter to be honorable and respectable human beings, who cherishes not only their own lives, but the lives of others,” states Tucker. “My mother, though now deceased, found a way to love twelve children, and she did it so painlessly, distributing her love evenly. Her lessons on living, learning and loving have been my master teacher,” exclaims Tucker. No doubt, the invaluable lesson is that pain is a touchstone for opportunity. And Tucker is one who sees opportunity in everything, and possibility in every person.

The Lion and the Gazelle It is very important that we see every day as an opportunity that demands that we give and do our very best. Success is more than a destination; it is a journey, an uphill climb. There will be successes and failures in view, and many, unforeseen, but we must persevere. If we are willing to meet those challenges, then we can live life to the fullest. Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up and knows that it must run faster than the faster lion or it will be killed and eaten. Also every morning in Africa a lion wakes up and knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle, when the sun comes up you’d better be running!

This is invaluable lesson to all, but especially to entrepreneurs. Everyday has to be a day filled with steps, leaps and jumps on how to take it to the next level. Don’t get weary and don’t grow despondent. Don’t get mad when things fall apart and don’t get turn away from the finish line. You are almost there. You will close the next deal, you will convince the company that you are the best person for the job, you will make the sale, you will earn the respect of clients and you will succeed in your business endeavors. When skills and education are properly applied, great things happen. Hold on, your business is on the verge of a breakthrough.

Aaron Glenn, NFL Pro Bowler with Business Partner/Sports Agent and Best

Friend, Jason Medlock, Are a Huge Influence in Real Estate, Fast Food and Sports By: Joie Rasberry Let’s face it, we know Aaron Glenn and Jason Medlock as sports figures, but truth be told, there is much more to them than meets the eye. Glenn and Medlock are extraordinary businessmen with influence in real estate, fast food and sports. Most Americans know Glenn and Medlock for their outstanding sports careers, but not as many are aware of their influence as investors and commercial real estate developers. We know their swift moves on the football field, but there is another side of the public Aaron Glenn and Jason Medlock that the community is proud to be a part of. The spotlight is shining more on the two as they negotiate contract agreements for 3131 Properties, LTD, a commercial real estate and development firm based in Sugar Land, Texas, founded in 1999. President and managing partner, Jason Medlock, oversees the daily operations of commercial and real estate developments, while partnering with Aaron Glenn. The company started nearly six years ago in Dallas, TX, where the two started off buying rent homes. The success honed in real estate prompted Glenn and Medlock to put a new face on their real estate success by moving toward commercial development. Though 3131 Properties initially started as a commercial real estate firm, it has far surpassed the original plans set forth by its owners. Inside this mega entity is housed Lexington Square – First Colony Mall Retail Shopping Center in Sugar Land, Texas, Mason Center – a Re-

tail Center in Katy, Texas, Plaza of Lakeside – First Colony Retail Center for Restaurants in Sugar Land, Texas, Williams Chicken – Dallas, Texas, based fast food restaurants brought to the Houston area, Glennlock Construction Group – a construction company that manages and administers commercial properties, The Aaron Glenn Foundation – a non profit organization benefiting children and families across the state of Texas, and DSA – Dallas Sports Agency that represents more than 20 players in the National Football League and the Canadian Football League. With several projects going on and with others underway, Glenn and Medlock are creating better communities. For the part two years, The Aaron Glen Foundation has hosted a Black Tie Gala in order to raise funds for its Character Camps. At the Aaron Glenn Character Camps, students learn the game of football, but they also learn how to be a great person. Students learn the importance of character-building, integrity, honesty and respect for each other. The Aaron Glenn Foundation has been endowed into the Texas A & M Minority Scholarship Program, while also providing scholarships for North Harris Community College, Aldine Independent School District and Harris County Community College. Medlock and Glenn both agree it is all about the children. Donations also include giving to the children in the medical center as well as the Candlelight Organization, a group assisting children with cancer and blood disorders. More than just monetary gifts, Medlock and Glenn believe in mentoring and tutoring to ensure that children are encouraged and directed in such a way where success is within their view. One of their more aggressive moves was the development agreement that resulted in an 80 store deal, spanning five countries for the Williams Chicken. With an expected 25 to 40 locations in the next six years, Medlock is excited about the jobs that it will produce for Texans. Franchise opportunities are also available. If interested, call 281-980-1180. I asked Medlock what advice he would offer to aspiring entrepreneurs, and he candidly stated, “Stay focused. Stop swaying. Understand what, when, who and where first. Un-

derstand these things about your new project. Ask yourself the hard questions about the business before you get into it, so that you can better understand the challenges. Understand your talents and surround yourself with good people.” His passion seemed unending as he spoke of business, success and what it takes to accomplish your goals. And this is what makes the Dallas Sports Agency so successful. It is more than just an agency, it is a place that offers professional football players a chance to enter an entity that is controlled by a multi-million dollar company that fosters and encourages players to become not just better athletes, but successful businessmen. The agency positions players in the business world and shows them that there are so many chances to make money outside of football. Trained by sisters Toska and Tareska, owners of the Myriad Group, a Public Relations Firm in Dallas, Texas, Medlock states he has always been an entrepreneur as he watched his entrepreneurial family in their various businesses. The idea of ownership and entrepreneurialism didn’t just happen, but rather it was embedded. Medlock’s parents worked regular jobs while operating a janitorial service on the side. From kindergarten to 9th grade, Medlock worked with his parents and siblings in the family’s janitorial service. “My family was entrepreneurs. I was groomed for business by them. One of my brothers owned a law firm and was a judge in Dallas, and when he passed away, it was like osmosis, his business savvy transferred to me. It wasn’t magical though, because all along I watched, and listened, and emulated what I saw my parents and siblings do,” states Medlock. Surrounded with special recognition, honors and awards, both Medlock and Glenn seem to take it all in stride. Their joy stems from helping others, while providing opportunities to better the community.

Mortgage Territory,

Inc. is continually spending invaluable time marketing, while purposefully planning for the future. The company continues to have innovative marketing strategies in place to ensure that the home-buying process is informative, “Cruising Through the Home-Buying Process,” is our sustainable philosophy, allowing homebuyers to take a cruise while attending a home-buying seminar. The cruise ship last sailed in June of 2005, and sold out to many prospective buyers looking to purchase their first homestead. Mortgage Territory, Inc. continues to assist prospective homebuyers with purchasing homes through new and innovative forums. This particular marketing technique has never done before, thereby, allowing those inter-

ested in buying homes to receive firstclass information on various topics. The seminar allows several representatives from various companies to include real estate agents, home owner’s insurance agents, title attorneys, credit restoration companies and a major homebuilder who gives up to $10,000 for closing cost. Each step is a building block to closing on a home and this seminar brings all the answers most new homeowners have about the home-buying process. Along with the seminar is food and refreshments that also includes an open bar. The seminar lasts one hour, and the remaining three hours are spent enjoying the cruise. The cruise is an excellent way for you and your mate to spend enjoying yourself, while also educating yourself on making the largest investment of your life. In addition, Mortgage Territory, Inc. has spent a great deal of time forming strategic alliances with

reputable companies. Stark Builders is one of those alliances, having the same standards and customer service as Mortgage Territory. Every credit profile is different, That’s why it is important to work with a Mortgage company who understands that. Diversified Home Mortgage understands that, and it is our main goal to put you on a loan program that fits your situation. It is our objective to meet your needs and goals. Whether its no money down, down payment assistance, cash out refinance, interest only, adjustable rate mortgage, VA, no income no asset verification, etc… we have a diverse portfolio of Loan products just for you. Why is it smarter to use the services of a licensed mortgage broker than working with a lender yourself? More and more borrowers have discovered that working with a mortgage broker the smartest way to obtain real estate financing. The benefits are clear. You’ll increase your chances of mortgage approval. Your local bank or credit union will only work to get you into one of their loan programs. They don’t have a wide selection of loan products to meet the borrowing needs of anyone who does not meet their strict lending guidelines. This means that if you have a special lending situation-as 9 out of 10 people who apply for a mortgage do-you can kiss your chances of approval goodbye.

contact them as “a quick buck” and don’t care whether or not you do business with them again as they have already moved on to the next customer. We want to work with you not just to meet your needs for this loan, but for all your future financing needs, as well as those of your friends, family and business associates. This regularly happens because of the extra care and dedication we give our customers--you’ll see the difference! I have a special financial situation. Can I still get a mortgage? If you think you have a special financial situation that prevents you from qualifying for real estate financing, think again. At Diversified Home Mortgage, we believe that everyone has the right to home ownership. Over the years, we’ve helped clients with just about every kind of financial challenge you can think of. * Renters struggling to save for a down payment * Couples with recent bankruptcies * Young professionals with high debt * Entrepreneurs whose assets are tied up * Recent retirees relocating to Florida * Real estate investors with high debt * Commercial property owners needing cash for other investments.

(Surprised that all those years your bank made money off your accounts don’t count for much? Don’t be. Sure, your loan officer will “feel bad” about turning you down, but business is business.)

Whatever your financial situation, if you need real estate financing, give me a call. Although we can’t help everyone, we have access to hundreds of loan programs and it is rare that we cannot find one to meet your needs. Is there a program that’s right for you? You’ll never know unless you call.

As a mortgage broker, we work with dozens of lenders nationwide. Many of these lenders are mortgage wholesalers that do not do business with the general public. This means you’ll have access to hundreds of lending programs, many of which actually cater to people with special lending needs.

Danny Mckinney, President “Dan the Mortgage Man” Diversified Home Mortgage

You’ll save money. What do car salesmen and bank loan officers have in common? They both have sales goals. And their bonus--and often their job--depends on meeting that sales goal. This is one reason that so many unsuspecting people end up with mortgages that are totally inappropriate for their financial needs. When you work with us, you have a financial services industry insider working in your best interest. Someone who will save you money by finding the best possible loan program to meet your needs. You won’t get pressured into a loan that’s not right for you. You’ll save time. Keeping track of the latest mortgage programs and dealing with lenders is a full time job. It’s what we do all day long, every day. Guiding people through the maze of real estate financing is how we spend our time, so you can spend yours living your life. For starters, you won’t waste your time applying to lenders who have no interest in lending you money. In fact, if a lender declines your loan request, we won’t give up. We will keep shopping your loan until we do everything possible to find a lender who says “yes”. You won’t have to worry about getting a lender to move quickly, either. That’s my job. We know how to make lenders move so your loan will be handled promptly. You can relax knowing that your closing date will be met because it’s our reputation and your satisfaction on the line. We know how busy you are. That’s why we make it easy to work with us. For personal attention, just pick up the phone, send a fax or e-mail. We are here to help when it’s convenient for you. Our customers are customers for life. Unfortunately, many mortgage companies are in this business for the short-term. They look at customers that

The workshop was intended primarily for faith-based organizations with little or no experience in increasing homeownership or increasing the supply of affordable single-family homes. The stated objectives are to: 1. Introduce basic options churches might adopt for

promoting affordable housing opportunities. 2. Discuss the process for increasing the supply of affordable single-family homes through development and 3. Learn from representatives that have implemented successful programs. “Since many ministers in my district are involved in developing affordable housing, I see a need to make sure they have all of the available resources to make their efforts successful”-said Council Member Alvarado. Get On the Bus as Higher Dimension Church Takes the Westwood Community to Another Level By: Reggie Wiley I am sure that by now you have heard that the Higher Dimension Bus, driven by Pastor Terrance H. Johnson, is about to embark on a journey that will take Houston, Texas and the Westwood Community to an entirely higher level! As you know, the Bus (Higher Dimension Church) was built (founded) in 1999, starting with only 29 passengers (members). In less than (6) six years, and almost $4 million dollars in upgrades, the Bus has increased in size to hold more than (7) thousand passengers, and is still growing. We invite you to come and ride the Bus with us as our Driver, Pastor Terrance H. Johnson, takes us to (5) Bus Stops (The 5-Fold Vision of the church), that promise to take you and your family to another level in your worship and praise for GOD. Up to now, our 1st stop has been to create the

edifice that houses the Bus, located at 9800 Club Creek. Our 2nd stop is THJ Ministries, a place designed to allow Christians an opportunity to grow intellectually by experiencing GOD through media (tapes, television, books, radio, etc…), and by providing scholarships to high school seniors in pursuit of higher education. Our next stop will take us to Next Level (NXL) Incorporated. NXL is the non-profit community redevelopment organization that is designed to promote a Christian living environment in the area of family living, recreation, career development and counseling. Currently, NXL is in the process of acquiring a strip shopping center located at 9700 Club Creek. This location has been featured on Fox News as the epicenter for prostitution, drugs, and various crimes. Once purchased, it will be transformed into the Next Level Center that will feature a grocery store, restaurant, and social service center that will provide counseling, GED programs, employment assistance and computer labs. After leaving NXL, the Bus will continue on to its 4th destination, the Higher Learning Acade-

By: Joie Rasberry When opportunity knocked, Abigail Matamoras, Assistant Project Manager for Glennlock Construction Group was there to open the door.

The focus for Abby is not that her parents separated when she was small or that she herself experienced the traumatic affects of divorce, but rather, as she states, “Believing in yourself and having confidence that you can compete against all odds is paramount.”

“Abby,” as she is affectionately known, was recently promoted to her new position, working alongside NFL Pro Bowler Aaron Glenn and Sports Agent Jason Medlock, owners of 3131 Properties, a commercial real estate and development firm based in Sugar Land, Texas.

Having received her GED from Wharton County Junior College, Abby continued to educate herself by studying Project Management. Continuing education has made a difference in her life, which is why she now enrolls in online courses.

After briefly speaking with Abby, I immediately thought of the song, I’m Every Woman. Though Abby displays a very quiet and humble disposition, life has offered challenges that has not only grounded her, but helped to shape her character.

Building a strategic alliance and a supportive team has aided in Abby’s overall development. Rodney, her husband of three years, and their six children offer their rallying support.

As in Abby’s case, similar to that of other aspiring women, behind most serene smiles is a story, one that is not always glamorous, yet, the

The school’s core subjects will focus on spiritual growth, academic achievement and student enrichment. Community and parental involvement are two ingredients that will be key to the school’s overall success — both will be actively solicited. Our 5th stop brings us to the Helmsman Management Group. Pastor Johnson’s vision for the Helmsman Group is to provide management and business-consulting services that will empower individuals, other ministries and assists today’s entrepreneurs with sound business principles that will enhance a company’s bottom line, while promoting lasting Christian relationships. So please, Man, Woman and Child, come and ride the Higher Dimension Bus as our bus driver, Pastor Terrance H. Abby is a reminder of what Dr. Ronald Lomas, Professor of Speech at Texas Southern University meant. Being at the right place at the right time is more than just a saying, in Abby’s case; it is the omen she lives by. When life offers curveballs and things are not aligned according to traditional measures, Abby will attest that dedication and persistence will not only get you in to doors, it will also keep you there, if you are willing to defy obstacles and work toward your goals.

Distinguished Professor

of Forensics and Head Coach of the Texas Southern University Debate Team Influence Students for More Than Half a Century By: Joie Rasberry A Life of Influence and Integrity Dr. Thomas F. Freeman, Distinguished Professor of Forensics and Head Coach of the Texas Southern University Debate Team since 1949, has taught Speech and Debate at TSU for more than half a century. “Doc,” as he is affectionately known, continues to change lives for the better, teaching students how to speak, when to speak up and when it is a best practice not to say anything at all. He has probably taught more students the art of public address and debate over a period of 56 years than any human ever. He has coached the TSU Debate Team from 1949 to present, influencing thousands of students who have gone on to make a difference in the world for the better. He metaphorically builds institutions inside of his students that will carry on his work long after he is gone. He himself is a debate innovator. His teams are slick and prepared, as well as articulate and analytical. His record of competitive success is impressive. It seems as if he was the inventor of the whole debate phenomenon, garnering first place wins locally, nationally and internationally. Students will tell you that his teaching style is bold, daring and charismatic, while his advice is keen, useful, and accurate. Most look back in retrospect and say how lucky and fortunate they are to have crossed Doc’s path. There are many who attribute their professional successes and personal accomplishments to Doc’s unswerving commitment to helping students. Be it a letter of recommendation, advice, coaching or merely a listening ear, Doc is there attentively listening, never steering his students wrong. Doc continues to promote discussion and debate as a model for citizenship. He believes that the ultimate product of our profession as debaters is a body of concerned, critically thinking, intelligent, and communicative citizens who can take the tragedy of today and turn it into victories of tomorrow by working hard, thinking deeply, and by speaking out. In government, in various professions, in

business, and all over the world his outstanding students are an important part of his legacy. Included in the list of prominent leaders taught by Dr. Freeman are former Congresswomen Barbara Jordan, former Congressman Mickey Leland, State Senator Rodney Ellis, HCCS Board President Bruce Austin, Attorney Andrew Jefferson, Assistant Coach Dr. Gloria Batiste-Roberts, Dr. James Race, Yolanda Adams, Jennifer Holiday, Pastor James Dixon, Attorneys Hannah and Otis King (brothers), the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., while at Morehouse College and others. With quite an impressive track record, it doesn’t stop here. Doc continues to produce university and class presidents as well as an abundance of university queens. The TSU debate office houses more trophies and awards than a calendar posts days of the year, while each year become more exciting than the previous. First place wins in Rome, Paris, London, Portugal, Greece and Prague are just to name a few, with stellar award-winning performances at the White House and South Africa to boast about. He is bold, daring and unconventional. He teaches his students, no, he demands that they succeed, by continually striving toward excellence. In addition to his leadership at TSU, Doc is also the minister of Mt. Horem Baptist Church. For well over 54 years, he has served the Mt. Horem church, influencing and touching the lives of generations. He has married, baptized, counseled and ministered hundreds of families, touching the lives of individuals from generation to generation. He is married to the beautiful Clarice Freeman, a retired educator and an accomplished musician. To their union, three children were born, Thomas F. Freeman II, Dr. Carlotta Freeman and Carter Freeman. His four grandchildren are Jasmine, Corey, Ivanna and Thomas III. Dr. Thomas F. Freeman is a living legend, a monument of hope and possibility. He is the Distinguished Professor of Forensics at Texas Southern University and Pastor of Mt. Horem Baptist Church. Note: Editor-in-Chief, Joie Rasberry, is also a protégé of Dr. Thomas F. Freeman.

The Walls Are Tumbling Down….Do you Care? By: Ramone Harper Do you know that the plan for your business is a part of God’s plan? Do you know that your business actually isn’t about you? Did you know that it was God that gives you power to get wealth? And did you know that God created your business in order to be a part of a kingdom building project? Well if not, then you are in a good place because we are going to look at what God wants from you…entrepreneur. You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today. Deutorononmy 8:18. This is not a quote from some famous philosopher or some business tycoon. This is the infallible word of God. As business leaders we must come to recognize that our business is not about us and that God has blessed us with wealth, with intellect, with creativity and ingenuity so that we can do business that will glorify Him. In the past, the business leaders partnered with the church to be the guardians of the community. Now a days, there is so much pressure on the church to be the only source of support, of benevolence, of social services to the community; and this is not the way it is supposed to be. Like the old cliché says, “A fist can make more impact than an open hand with single fingers.” Our community (black and Hispanic) is like Jerusalem was in the days of Ezra and Nehemiah. I am praying for the day when some of our business owners will hear the report that Nehemiah heard in Nehemiah chapter one. The walls are torn down…our people are unprotected…our children need role models…we need funds to provide social services like HIV/AIDS prevention, GED programs, better housing, rehabilitation programs, transitional living for those who need a second chance and have made mistakes, and now want to turn their lives around…recreation for our children and youth so they don’t spend time trying to rob you. This is the report in Southwest Westwood Community. Pastor Terrance Johnson has heard the call and wants to rebuild the walls through NXL Community Development Corporation. We, like Nehemiah and the pastor at your church need your help! Give to your local church, support mission work and community outreach programs through your business. This is the call for us as entrepreneurs. When Nehemiah, who was a successful leader in a heathen’s king palace heard the report, he not only cried, but he did something about it. He gathered all the community leaders, acquired support from the government, rallied the business leaders and began a reform process to rebuild the walls in the community. The report has been made, the walls are torn down in your community. Now I ask, do you care?

RX for Your Health Sponsored by Rave Strategic Marketing Concepts Rave Review Claude’s Pharmacy in Northwest Houston, is one of the oldest independent pharmacy’s in the Houston area. Located at 5740 W. Little York and Antoine, it still follows some of the old customary traditions as it did well over thirty years ago. Because of its independent nature, customers who are sick and shutin, can still get their medication delivered. Even with the high price of gas, deliveries are still offered free to them. Elderly patients feel comfortable with talking with a Pharmacist who they know, and who often delivers their medication personally. Delivery and customer service distinguishes Claude’s Pharmacy from retail stores like Walgreen’s and CVS. Claude’s also offers old-time remedies retail stores don’t carry. With the motto, “The Community Pharmacy where your health is our number one concern,” on any given day, customers walk in and the staff recognizes them by their first name. Maria, one of the store employees, has been there since the store opened. Claude’s Pharmacy is a full service pharmacy with a unique setup. It not only offers customers pharmacy services, it offers business solutions as well. The pharmacy houses 300 mailboxes, a contract postal station, western union, utility and cable payments, notary and fax/copier services. Pharmacy services include Nebulizers, free delivery and medical supplies. Claude’s accepts most insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. The owner of Claude’s pharmacy is Ron Richardson. Ron bought Claude’s seven years ago. He left a lucrative job as a nuclear pharmacist, because he wanted to own his own pharmacy. He says he often remembers the old neighborhood pharmacy back home in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the Black pharmacist who inspired him. One day at Windsor Village United Methodist Church where Kirbyjon Caldwell is Pastor, he asked individuals to stand and acknowledge their five year plan. Ron stood up and acknowledged that his plan was to own his own pharmacy. Four months later, he quit his job, stepped out on faith and acquired Claude’s pharmacy. As the owner of Claude’s, Ron feels like this is his way of giving back. For years he dealt with only the hospitals, and numbers, but not faces. Ron enjoys the interaction with senior citizens and the personal care homes he services. Often, he talks with patients about their aches and pains, while recommending the latest over-the-counter medications. He kept the name Claude’s because that is what customers are familiar with. Eventually, he plans to change it, but for right now, he feels, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Being an independent pharmacist is a tough business; however, with hard work, and a good staff, Ron Richardson and Claude’s Pharmacy will continue the ministry of serving the community.

Successful Business Lawyer, Felix Chevalier, Shares his Legal Expertise to Help the Community There are different facets of the law and different lawyers have specialization in each one of them. The choice of your attorney will depend on the nature of your legal circumstance. Understanding legal issues, if you can detect them, may be difficult, but there are lawyers such as Felix Chevalier, who are skilled in these types of tasks and you would benefit greatly from his expertise. Having a lawyer to take care of your legal needs is a smart decision, and it is one sure way to free yourself of avoidable pitfalls. Joie: What distinguishes you from other business lawyers? Felix: I have a unique blend of legal, business and political experience that serves as a benefit to my clients. As a lobbyist for a New York corporation, which I helped obtain a $2.1 million contact, I recognized the constant interconnection of politics and business. When I moved to Houston, I joined a premier dispute resolution consulting firm. I gained invaluable insight on how Fortune 500 corporate executives, managing partners at large law firms, and prominent corporate and trial attorneys

devised their strategies to make business and legal decisions. Prior to starting my law practice, I worked in the commercial litigation section of a law firm. I handled and managed the litigation for DIRECTV, Inc. cases in the South Eastern region of the United States. In addition to being licensed in Texas, I am licensed in New York and New Jersey, therefore, I can assist clients who have or wish to conduct business in those states as well. I provide start-ups and existing business owners the same level of service Fortune 500 corporations receive without the hefty fees. Hence, I provide a comprehensive consultation because my integrated experience allows me to help my clients achieve their goals from a business and legal perspective. Joie: As a successful business person how did you get started? Felix: While working for a prominent law firm, I continuously found myself assisting friends with their legal issues. I refused to take them as clients via the law firm, because I did not want them paying the firm’s considerable legal fees. It has always been my personal goal to sta rt my own law firm and the timing seemed perfect. Once it became known that I was laying the foundation to start a law practice, the requests for legal assistance not only increased, but client referrals became fairly frequent. CLF took off from there. Joie: Why did you choose Law as a profession?

Felix: I grew up in the South Bronx, New York, which is one of the most economically depressed areas in the country. While interning for the Bronx Borough President, I realized that politics and law had a direct affect on my community. I came to the conclusion that if I became a lawyer, I could use my understanding of the law to help improve the lives of others and my own. I believe that helping people start and develop their businesses, serves to assist them in improving their lives and eventually the communities in which they exist. Joie: What type of clients does CLF render services for? Felix: CLF renders services to clients from diverse industries which include, but are not limited to, Technology Commercialization, Real Estate, and Interior Design. CLF clientele includes individuals and organizations that have a concept and require assistance in bringing that concept in to fruition through the development of a professional business plan. Once this plan has been developed for submission to a lending institution for financing, creating the business infrastructure and development are the next step. CLF also has clients that are experienced business owners who may require assistance with facilitating a business transaction, contract review and/or development, or assistance in a business dispute. Joie: Do you perform direct outreach into the community, such as seminars and workshops, relating to different areas Business Law?

Board Member to Provision, Inc., which is a non- profit organization for young, inner city males that includes a charter school and programs centered on manhood development, technology, and mental health. Additionally, I serve as counsel to the Houston African American Chamber of Commerce. I look forward to doing more seminars and workshops in the near future. Joie: What tips of advice would you offer to other entrepreneurs? Felix: Develop a comprehensive business plan and execute it. The saying is trite but true, “If you fail to plan, then you are planning to fail.” Intelligent people understand that they do not know it all; therefore, they seek professional guidance. The cost for professional advice can provide long term protection, peace of mind and avoid the turmoil, costs, and stress one may endure if they do not obtain such advice. I know of a business owner that is quite successful, but he is not protected because he failed to properly secure his business name and idea (Intellectual Property). His business name and idea is in the process of being legally copied by someone else. Had he properly sought legal guidance in his early stages of planning, his predicament could have been avoided. Joie: What are your goals and aspirations in the future? Felix: My plan is to continually provide my clients with excellent and innovative business and legal guidance to help their companies flourish.

Felix: Currently, I serve as an Advisory

Get It In Writing Oftentimes, people die without leaving a will leaving love ones confused and left to pick up the pieces. A significant number of family disputes are the direct result of misunderstandings over what Mom or Dad said prior to their death involving estate property. More specifically as it relates to real property. What is a will? A will is perhaps the most important legal document the average person will ever sign. It is an instrument that, upon your death, controls who gets your property, who will be the guardian of your children, and who will manage your estate. Dying without a will you are “intestate”. This means that the state, not you, decides how your property is to be distributed. Dying without a will can tie up assets for an undetermined period of time. A court proceeding often is required to determine who the heirs are. This process can range in the thousands of dollars depending on the circumstances surrounding the estate. Transfer of ownership of some of the assets by legal documents, such as deeds and certificates of title, will be necessary especially when the heirs desire to sell the real property. Known as an Affidavit of Heirship, it generally costs $250 plus filing fees along with the delay and hassle of going through this process. For self-employed business owners, dying without a will can be devastating. Often a businessperson’s interest in a closely held business is his or her primary source of income and constitutes the bulk of his or her wealth. Some common options chosen by small business owners include partner buyout agreements, gift-leaseback arrangements, life insurance policies, and incorporation or LLC formation. You can find inexpensive will do-it-yourself kits or fill in the blank forms from your local office supply store. However, drafting a will should be a team effort between you and your attorney. Attorneys at The Brown & Brown Law Firm, P.C., advise that every qualified person executes a will. In an effort to better serve our community and eliminate delays in the real estate closing process, The Brown & Brown Law Firm, P.C. will be hosting FREE will seminars whereby attendees can have their will drafted for FREE. Please contact our office for further details. Some restrictions apply. Bernadette L. Duffey, Real Estate Attorney The Brown & Brown Law Firm, P.C.
