4 Challenges
BUSINESS
for Women Entrepreneurs and How To Overcome Them By d-mars.com News Provider
W
hile opportunities continue to grow for female entrepreneurs, women-owned businesses are still in the minority, and women still face many challenges when embracing the entrepreneurial life. Starting a business is far from easy, and can be even more difficult for women, as they are often kept out of financial conversations, impacting their financial confidence as they age and preventing monetary discussion within their communities. While women face many obstacles in business, there are several powerful solutions that can take you far down the path of creating your own business.
Hereare aresome someofofthe thecommon commonchallenges challenges Here womenininbusiness businessface faceand andtips tipstotohelp help women throughoutthe theprocess. process. throughout Challenge 1: Work-life balance Work-life balance can be a challenge for men and women alike, especially parents, who juggle both family and career responsibilities. Striking a healthy balance between business and family life may be one of the biggest barriers to success for many. Solution: As an entrepreneur, creating the right balance
is all about flexibility. Your schedule may look different than a typical nine-to-five job, and that's OK. Focus on achieving balance - not perfection - and remember to ask for help and delegate tasks when necessary. Challenge 2: Lack of funding Lack of funding is one of the biggest issues facing entrepreneurs, especially those that are female. Sourcing capital is the first step to getting your business up and running. Solution: Funding programs for female entrepreneurs are helping women break down the financial barriers to owning a business. The #DOVEInstaGrants program by Dove Chocolate is working to foster true financial equity and agency for women everywhere. Through the program, three women will be awarded a $10,000 prize and the opportunity to fulfill their small-business dreams. For the past five years, DOVE has worked with CARE, an international humanitarian agency, and the DOVE InstaGrants program aims to expand these efforts to the U.S. The partnership with CARE empowers women in West African cocoa-growing communities through financially empowering Village Savings & Loan Association programs. In fact, 80% of members are women who lend and borrow microloans to build their own small businesses and define their financial voice. To learn more about the DOVE brand's partnership with CARE, visit DoveChocolate.com, or visit
InstaGrants.DoveChocolate.com to submit a small business or entrepreneurial idea. Challenge 3: Building a support network In the U.S., despite undeniable commonalities in experiences with money, female entrepreneurs often lack a financial community where they can seek inspiration or counsel from other women like them. In fact, 58% of women report that they do not currently have another woman in their life to talk with about finances, according to an NBC news survey. A robust network of supporters and connections is crucial for success as an entrepreneur. It can be difficult to forge a path through business networks, especially when success can be dependent on who you know. Solution: Start by finding and attending women-focused networking events in your area. You can find in-person conferences as well as online forums created specifically for women in business. Once you've built your network of supporters, don't hesitate to reach out for help. Challenge 4: Lack of role models and representation Although representation is growing when it comes to female entrepreneurs, it is still a male-dominated field. Solution: Find women you admire and take inspiration from them. You can search for books, blogs, virtual talks, podcasts and so much more to learn about females in business and entrepreneurship. Additionally, work to build your network of women to help you feel more connected and supported. By overcoming these challenges, women can feel empowered to define their financial voice and make their entrepreneurial dreams come true. Learn more at InstaGrants.DoveChocolate.com.

s the country takes steps toward economic recovery amidst an ongoing pandemic, women business owners are reporting increased optimism about the current economic outlook, which may be accredited to their resilience and decisive action, according to a recent survey of women-owned businesses by PNC Bank. Leading the way in employee vaccination. According to the survey, nine in 10 (89%) women business owners have taken action to encourage employee vaccination, compared to 78% of male business owners. In fact, half (49%) are providing assistance or education about the vaccine and nearly half (48%) are requiring their employees to receive vaccinations. Those efforts may well be making an impact: eight in 10 (79%) women business owners estimate that a majority of their employees have been vaccinated, and eight in 10 (81%) of those with 100% vaccinated employees report they are highly optimistic about their company’s prospects over the next six months. Among those with fewer than 100% of their workforce vaccinated, 56% are highly optimistic. “The optimism reflected in this survey is significantly higher than in our previous surveys of women business owners and this year, there is an undeniable correlation between safeguarding their workforce and their future financial prospects,” said Beth Marcello, director of PNC Women’s Business Development.
Women Business Owners Take Decisive Action During the Pandemic Supporting employees through the pandemic. In addition to encouraging COVID-19 vaccination, female business owners have outpaced men in taking other actions since the start of the pandemic on behalf of their employees, such as implementing health and safety improvements (49%), allowing more flexible work arrangements (49%), and providing caregiving support and other benefits (14%). Both women (36%) and men (44%) increased wages and salaries during the pandemic to retain and attract talent, and said they plan to increase compensation (27% and 37%, respectively) in the next six months. Taking action on social responsibility. Women business owners differed substantially from their men counterparts in the area of social responsibility, according to the survey. Six in 10 (60%) women
business owners have formally considered or reviewed policies supporting diversity and inclusion, gender pay equity, volunteering or charitable giving, or sustainability or the environment in the past 12 months. This is double the percentage of men business owners who have done the same (30%).
“It is clear from the data that female business owners are prepared for the challenges they face; in fact, more than half attributed their optimism to their own resilience and resourcefulness,” Marcello said. “The support they provide for each other

and their employees is key to thriving, and why we’re optimistic about the future for women-owned businesses and their growing contribution to economic prosperity overall.” About the survey and Project 257: Accelerating Women’s Financial Equality. The survey, among small- and medium-sized businesses with self-reported revenue of $100,000 to $250 million, was conducted by telephone among a national sample of women’s business owners during August and September of 2021. Under the leadership of Marcello and with support from the bank’s 4,000 PNCCertified Women’s Business Advocates, PNC recently launched Project 257: Accelerating Women’s Financial Equality, an initiative designed to help close the 257-year economic gender gap and expand on PNC’s decades-long track record of supporting female financial decision makers. More information can be found at pnc.com/women. One thing is clear. Women business owners have taken decisive action during the pandemic, and these efforts are making a positive impact on their employees and their business. Source: StatePoint

How and Why to Volunteer as a Family By d-mars.com News Provider
L
ast month celebrated Family Volunteer Day, a global day of service that empowers families to work together in support of their communities. Now more than ever, as we experience a global pandemic, and have a renewed focus on social justice and environmental challenges, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and advance causes your family cares about.
Here are a few of the extraordinary things that happen when families choose to volunteer together: 1. Children learn your family’s values. It’s always important to talk to children about what values your family holds. But one of the best ways to reinforce these conversations is to demonstrate your values in action. Volunteering shows your
kids that you’re dedicated, as a family, to promoting, supporting or furthering a certain issue -- and that you’re willing to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. 2. You spend quality time together. Volunteering is a way to bring together family members of all ages -- parents, children, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and more -- around a common mission. 3. It builds empathy. Learning emotional intelligence is a crucial part of child development, and civic engagement can accelerate this process. When volunteering, you’ll interact with those who share commonalities, like passion about an issue, and those who may be different from you, like people from communities outside your own. Understanding where people are coming from and hearing about their lived experiences helps children flex their empathy muscles now and later in life. 4. You become lifelong learners. If kids always associate learning with school, they may see their educational journey come to an end when they graduate. Instead, show them that the world is full of learning opportunities. Through volunteering, they’ll interact with new people from various walks of life, adopt
new skills needed for the task at hand and discover how they can make an impact through their time, talent and efforts. 5. You develop important skills. Everyone can gain valuable skills through volunteering. There are the hard skills often needed for volunteer roles, like carpentry, computer programming, translation and other services, and the soft skills that come with volunteer positions, like social and communication skills.

t age 62, Sandy Weber became unemployed when her customer service job was eliminated during the COVID pandemic. A friend encouraged her to give substitute teaching a try. "I didn't realize I could work in a classroom without a teaching background," Weber said. "It was the best decision I've made in years." U.S. workers faced unprecedented challenges this past year. Millions of Americans lost their jobs, were forced out of the labor force to care for dependents or resigned to re-evaluate what kind of career they really want. About 7.5 million workers quit their jobs in April and May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those who have lost, have left or are thinking of leaving their job might want to consider a career in the classroom. Schools and daycares everywhere need new talent, as a record number of educators are among those who have left their jobs to care for their own children or choose early retirement. While this puts the education system under pressure, it presents an ideal opportunity for career changers wanting to make a difference in children's lives. "Because of this pandemic, people have had time to reassess what's really important to them," said Nicola Soares, president of Kelly Education. "The need for a career change, plus the desire to find greater purpose and flexibility are driving workers to seek meaningful employment in schools." Launching a fulfilling education career is easier than you might think. There are many ways to begin, even without teaching credentials. Schools are welcoming more candidates with diverse backgrounds, perspectives and work experiences than ever before. Weber was able to transfer her customer service skills to managing the classroom. Substitute teachers Every school district needs hundreds of substitute teachers during a normal school year. Post-pandemic, that number is even higher. Credentials for substitutes vary by state, so job seekers should check their state's department of education or local school district website. Pay varies according to levels of education and experience and can range anywhere from $100 to $200 a day. 2. Paraeducators Even with virtual schooling, there is a strong demand for paraeducators across all grade levels. Also known as paraprofessionals, they often work with children who have special needs by providing support to students in and out of the classroom. Successful paraeducators are
3. Tutors The ongoing need for learning recovery from the pandemic is creating a surge in demand for tutors. Pay ranges from $20 to $50 an hour for math and science tutors. Tutoring is a great option for people with a variety of professional experiences and allows for flexibility with scheduling (more evening and weekend hours).
4. Early childhood educators Working with infants and young children is fun and creative. While early childhood teacher positions may require certifications (varying by state), assistant, substitute or aide roles are accessible in these settings, offering steady part-time or full-time work with infants, toddlers and preschoolers. How to get started Many positions demand a high school diploma or G.E.D., but any work environment featuring children will also require a background check. Employers provide information about the vetting process or may arrange it for candidates. Here are two resources to get started: KellyEducation.com connects job seekers with classroom positions primarily in the Northeast, Southeast and Southwest, offering full-time opportunities and flexible schedules in early childhood settings and Pre-K12th grade. Kelly Education also assists with alternative pathways to a long-term career in education, and hours worked in the classroom can be included toward future certification or degree programs. In the western U.S., TeachersOnCall.com is a service that hires substitute teachers, paraeducators, tutors and early childhood education staff. Job seekers can choose their grade level, schools and days they want to work. "Making a career change to help out in schools has been really satisfying," said Weber. CDC Hosted Virtual Recruitment Event for Students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities By NNPA Newswire
R
ecently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hosted a special event for students and recent graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as part of the agency’s efforts to improve outreach and recruit diverse talent. The event, Noted: Building on the Legacy of HCBUs in Public Health, gave students the opportunity to engage with HBCU alumni leaders at CDC and learn more about the agency’s fellowship and training programs. “Historically Black Colleges and Universities are a source of achievement, pride, and pivotal impact for all Americans, and the talent afforded specifically from HBCU graduates in our workforce is imperative to ensure health equity in our science and interventions as we address the impacts of racism and social determinants on health,” said Celeste Philip, M.D., M.P.H., CDC’s Deputy Director for NonInfectious Diseases and Howard University alumna. “CDC is committed to strengthening partnerships with HBCUs to recruit the next generation of scientists and leaders, so that we remain a pinnacle in public health.” As the nation’s premier public health agency, CDC offers unique opportunities to pursue public service and address the most pressing issues affecting communities across the country. Attendees heard from HBCU alumni leaders at CDC about their own experiences within the agency’s fellowship programs and their professional paths. Fellowship representatives also provided an overview of their respective programs, key considerations for applying, and the importance of having HBCU students and alumni within the CDC workforce. “Partnership with Historically Black Colleges and Universities has never been more important, as the public health workforce needs highly skilled and talented professionals who bring their diverse lived experiences and perspectives to meet the most critical public health challenges of the 21st century and beyond,” said Donna Hubbard McCree, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.Ph., Associate Director for Health Equity in CDC’s National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention and Howard University alumna.
“CDC is working to systematically expand its outreach to develop a more inclusive workforce better equipped to assess and address the needs of an increasingly diverse U.S. population.” In addition to CDC staff, the event also included remarks from Congresswoman Alma Adams, founder and Co-Chair of the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus. The Biden-Harris administration called on all federal agencies to establish clear plans to strengthen Federal recruitment activities at HBCUs to build accessible and equitable pathways into Federal service and talent programs in a September 2021 Executive Order. How To Make the Most of Your Medicare Open Enrollment Options By d-mars.com News Provider
E
ach year when the Medicare open enrollment period comes around, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the many choices you have. You're not alone - most people have questions this time of year. What's the best way to get the most from your benefits? What if Medicare doesn't cover everything you need? If these types of questions are swirling in your mind, not to worry. There are simple ways to think through your options and find a plan that suits your unique needs. "Start by listing out what's most important to you when it comes to health plan coverage," says Mathew S. Philip, M.D., an Internal Medicine physician at Duly Health and Care. "There are some areas you may want to keep consistent, like your primary care physician, while you may be open to changing your pharmacy. Thinking about these things before starting the Medicare open enrollment process will save you time."
Dr.Philip Philipand andthe theexperts expertsat Dr. at Duly Health and Duly Health and Care,Care, formerly formerly DuPage Medical DuPage Medical Group, Group, recommend you recommend that youthat ask these ask these questions when questions when evaluating your evaluating yourplan Medicare Medicare health options: health plan options: Does this plan include benefits that are most important to me? Take time to review your healthcare needs over the past year. What medical services and prescriptions did you need? How much did you pay for premiums and out-of-pocket costs like copays for doctor visits and prescriptions? Reflecting on your needs over the past year can help determine what benefits you'll likely need in the year ahead. Can I continue to see my primary care physician? If it's important to you to stay with your current primary care physician, you'll want to make sure that provider is in your plan's network. Are my prescriptions covered, and is my preferred pharmacy in-network? If you rely on regular prescriptions from month to month, and you prefer to use a specific pharmacy near you, ask about your prescription coverage and make sure your pharmacy is in the network.
Would I benefit from an all-in-one plan? Medicare all-in-one plans, like Medicare Advantage, may help simplify your options, and may provide more comprehensive and cost-effective benefits. Be sure to find out if your preferred provider participates in the plan you choose. For instance, Duly Health and Care physicians and providers participate in the following Medicare Advantage plans:

Plans may also include a broader range of "extra benefits" than they have in the past, including transportation to doctor visits, over-the-counter medications, adult care services and other health and care tools and resources to support your well-being. Ask yourself if you would like to take advantage of these types of benefits, and if they would make a difference for your wellness, convenience and overall quality of life. How can I get help comparing plans? The Medicare website has information about plan options. If you need personalized plan recommendations, Duly Health and Care is partnering with the Integrity Medicare Helpline to offer one-on-one appointments with an independent licensed agent (call 1-855205-2037). Making Pregnancy and Childbirth Safer in America By d-mars.com News Provider
I
t surprises a lot of people to learn that the United States is the most dangerous place to give birth in the developed world. Women in the United States are more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than women in Libya and Kazakhstan, and the United States is the only industrialized nation to experience an increase in maternal mortality over the last two decades. Pregnancy is especially dangerous for women of color. Black women in the United States lose their lives in childbirth at three to four times the rate of white women. But there is good news. Experts say we can reduce deaths among moms and babies by improving health policies and changing the way care is delivered. MomsRising, an online and on-theground organization working to improve the health and economic security of moms
and families, is urging federal and state lawmakers to invest in research into the reasons pregnancy and childbirth are so dangerous in the United States. The group is pressing to improve prenatal care, better train doctors and nurses, diversify the perinatal health care workforce, make it easier for working moms to breastfeed, improve mental health care for pregnant women and new moms, ensure that pregnant women on Medicaid can keep their health insurance for a year after giving birth, and guarantee paid leave. Right now, one in four women go back to work just two weeks after giving birth because they can’t afford to take any additional unpaid time off to recover from childbirth and care for their infant.

he COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities across our nation’s healthcare system, shining a light on disparities in access to care and health outcomes. People of color and those with low incomes are often left without access to high-quality, affordable health insurance, causing them to delay or forgo lifesaving care. Strides have been made in improving access to coverage with the implementation of Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). To date, more than one in five people in the United States — nearly 75 million Americans—rely on Medicaid for health coverage, making it the country’s largest healthcare program. More than 15 million of these Medicaid enrollees were made eligible through the expansion of coverage brought about by the ACA. Everyone needs access to health insurance, yet those who are least able to afford it are left with the fewest options for coverage. More than 2.2 million adults make too much money to be eligible for traditional Medicaid, but not enough to receive subsidies to purchase health insurance through the ACA Marketplace.

uncompensated care costs which in turn are absorbed by hospitals and the federal and state governments. • Improvements in hospital budgets, especially for rural hospitals. • Fewer evictions among renters with low income.
Perhaps most importantly, Medicaid provides peace of mind to people who would otherwise be uninsured. As a nation still in the trenches of the pandemic, it is crucial that we move towards ensuring everyone living in the United States has access to quality, affordable health coverage.

s we prepare to close out 2021, the word that comes to mind is RESILIENCE. Resilience is defined as the ability to recover quickly from difficulties; getting back up when you fall. Between 2020-2021, some lost friends and family to COVID-19, others lost jobs and income, and for others, it was an opportunity to grow and stretch personally and professionally. Self-reflection after overcoming trials is the perfect time to identify what you want for yourself in life and in love. While the holidays can cause one to feel lonely, you do not have to be alone. It is important to connect with friends and family and your faith. The new year is an opportunity to reflect and identify what you can do to improve your relationship(s) moving forward.
gratitude to each other for who they are and what they mean to you in your life. We tend to say, “they know I love and appreciate them,” but do they really? Learn and express your love to your partner in their love language not your own and speak to each other with the highest level of esteem and respect. • Lastly, take a break from talking about problems in the relationship and focus on having fun. It is easy to identify things going wrong, however, try to switch gears and focus on what is going right. Go on a date night, get together with friends, or take a weekend getaway, just do something fun. Schedule a specific time to discuss problems instead of everyday or as they occur. Everything does not need to be discussed at the moment.

When both parties take time to really hear each other before getting defensive and trying to explain yourself first, you have an opportunity to develop and convey empathy for how the other is feeling, which may improve the way you feel. Positive communication is the key. • Make quality time for each other. With careers, children, social networks, and the like, quality time becomes low priority with the person closest to you, your partner. It is easy to take for granted that they will always be there, however, you must remember to consistently put in the same effort and energy as you did when you met. When things get rough, talk about your needs with each other, or even a therapist, to get back on track. • Let go of control. Each person brings unique personalities, likes, and experiences. When people argue, it is usually to convince the other to think or adopt their personal thoughts and ways of doing things versus respecting the other person’s way of thinking. How ONE COMPANY Levels the Playing Field for New Career Seekers By National Newspaper Publishers Association News Provider
O
ver half of Americans (55%) now in the workforce will be looking for a new position over the next year, according to a survey from Bankrate.com. For the many Americans seeking new employment, whether recent grads, anyone just out of the military or leaving an unstable or low-paying job - the hardest part can be finding opportunities to learn a new trade without going into debt. Environmental services company Republic Services is putting students' needs first - reinventing how they address that challenge to grow their talent pipeline. Their industry-first Republic Services Technical Institute in Dallas offers tuition-free education to students who qualify as they complete 12 weeks of training, followed by 21 months of on-the-job training at one of their 180 business units nationwide. Students will receive: • Full-time, paid, in-shop training throughout the program • Company-provided relocation, housing and travel expenses • A toolbox stocked with tools Students will commit to work for the company for two years after the training and apprenticeship are completed. And the best part? Anyone can apply for the two-year program, without any prior knowledge or experience as a mechanic or technician. The company partnered with the U.S. Department of Labor and Lincoln Tech to create the cutting-edge curriculum, in a brand-new building with two labs and high-tech classrooms. The Institute goes beyond technical training to educate the whole student, providing life skills education including financial management, emotional intelligence and mental wellness.
"This is an investment in people, further demonstrating our commitment to being the place where the best people come to work," said Jon Vander Ark, president and CEO of Republic Services. "We look forward to welcoming new graduates as they contribute to our highly trained workforce, increasing the reliability and consistency of our customer experience." Diversity and inclusion
The company is also looking to train and hire a more diverse and inclusive workforce both for their technician and driver positions. For example, while women currently make up only a small percentage of the waste and recycling workforce, Republic is working to change that through its She Drives initiative, which seeks to broaden the driver candidate pool and increase the number of women hired for driver positions. Just one year into the initiative, the hiring rate of women drivers increased by one-third, placing Republic Services above the national average. "I'm proud to say that I've been in the vocational educational industry for more than two decades and I've never seen this level of commitment to bringing on new talent by leadership," said Misty Ross, director of the Republic Services Technical Institute and a U.S. Air Force veteran. "The financial commitment of $35,000 per student is fully covered by Republic, which will have a lasting impact as we develop the next generation of diesel technicians." To learn more and to apply for the program, visit www.RepublicServices.com/Tech-Institute.
• Practice: College entrance exams are no exception to the adage, that “practice makes perfect.” Many of these exams employ very specific types of questions that are not always encountered elsewhere. For this reason, it’s important that your student prepares by taking timed practice tests at home and by learning more about how each test they’re enrolled in is administered. This way, there are no surprises when it matters most! • Gear Up: Before test day, gather at least two well-sharpened No. 2 pencils, your student’s photo identification, and an approved calculator. Calculators used on test day should be intuitively designed to save your test-taker valuable minutes. The user-friendly Casio’s fx-9750GIII PRIZM Graphing Calculator, for example, offers an improved keypad for fractions, standard-to-decimal conversion and scientific notation. Expanded menu options for programs and capabilities include Exam Mode, Spreadsheet, Python, Probability Simulator, Geometry and Physium, which enables users to easily reference the periodic table. In addition, its natural display feature allows for two-dimensional templates, fractions, roots and other functions to appear on the screen as they are written in the textbook. Whatever calculator your student uses, be sure they are very familiarized with its interface by test day. • Consider additional help: If your student has taken the exam or a practice exam and would like to raise their scores, a prep course or one-on-one tutoring can make a notable difference. However, these courses can be pricey. Mobile apps can offer test prep questions and flash cards at a more accessible price point, and some of the traditional test prep centers, such as Kaplan, offer less expensive software options as an alternative to in-person classes. • Rest, Don’t Cram: Preparing for college entrance exams is sort of similar to training to run a marathon. What one does in the weeks leading up to the big day will have a much bigger impact on performance than any last-minute preparations. In fact, back-loading preparations can backfire. Just like you wouldn’t want to run 26.2 miles on tired legs, you don’t want to take the test when you are mentally fatigued. Have your student avoid cramming the night before. Instead, they should practice steadily in the weeks beforehand, but take a break on the eve of the test so they can arrive fresh, well-rested and ready to crush it.
With ample preparation and the right tools, your student can face test day with confidence.

Experts note that money talk taboos are common among American families and that this needs to change. “For many families, money is a topic we don’t openly discuss. 5 Ways To Enjoy the Without Breaking Your Budget
Holidays By d-mars.com News Provider
new survey reveals that Americans say the holidays will give them something positive to look forward to, after many people had to curtail last year's holiday celebrations due to the pandemic. In the new 2021 Coinstar Holiday Survey, respondents said that while gift buying may go down this year (one-third plan to buy fewer gifts), people overall are looking for more activities that bring them holiday joy - as they still manage their budgets.
A
Here are tips to help boost your holiday spirit, without breaking the bank. 1. Embrace regifting If you've ever thought about regifting a present to someone who might actually enjoy it, you're not alone. According to the survey, more than one-fourth (28%) said they're likely to regift something this holiday season. There's nothing wrong with regifting, and here's why: * It saves you money * Reusing is good for the environment * Your closet gets a little less cluttered * You may be giving the absolute perfect gift to someone else
Be sure to regift with care, and not give the gift back to the same person who gave it to you! 2. Use spare change to stretch your budget When finances are tight, you may be surprised to learn that you have more spare change lying around than you think! Check your purse, couch cushions, car or change jar for loose change. Survey respondents estimate they have approximately $123 in spare change at home, and over half (52%) said they are likely to cash in or use their spare change this holiday season. This newfound cash can be used for buying gifts, decorations or donating to others. It's easy to cash in your spare change at a Coinstar kiosk in your local supermarket. At the kiosk, you can convert your spare change to cash, a no-fee eGift card - or even donate to charity, which makes it perfect for boosting the spirit of giving.
3. Deck the halls with holiday spirit Nothing brings back your childhood sense of holiday wonder and magic better than beautiful colored lights and holiday decorations, whether at your own home or around your neighborhood. Over 90% of the people surveyed plan to decorate their homes this season, and three out of four say they will start or increase their tradition of driving around to enjoy decorations and lights nearby - a fun and no-cost activity to delight your whole family. 4. Bake a little joy for the holidays Baking is one of the most fun and inexpensive ways to spend time with your family, as well as being a great way to create giftable treats. In the survey, 80% of Americans said they will start or increase their home baking this holiday season. Find festive tins, jars or holiday-themed plates to load up with goodies, wrap in foil, then stick on a colorful ribbon and voila! A tasty gift anyone would love to receive. Baking not your strong suit? No worries. You can find pre-made refrigerated or frozen cookie dough in most stores, so you can still have the fun - and delicious aroma - of homemade cookies without all the fuss and muss. 5. Bring joy to others by giving Giving to others can bring unexpected holiday joy. After more than a year of challenges, nearly two-thirds of Americans (61%) say they'll start or increase their donations of money or volunteering time to charity this holiday season. Another way to feel the warm glow of giving to others is by tipping service providers who help you throughout the year, from your childcare provider to your mail carrier. Well over half (57%) of Americans say they tip service providers during the holidays. It doesn't take a lot of cash to make the season bright. Revisit the traditions you have with friends and family and perhaps create a few new ones to make this year memorable. Approaching the holiday with an attitude of creativity and gratitude will go a long way toward capturing the joy of the holiday season. Source: BPT
f you’re like many Americans, having a better understanding of money management is a priority for you right now. In fact, nearly 75% of Americans hope to improve their financial literacy in 2021, according to a recent survey conducted by OnePoll for World Finance. The same survey also found that 50% of Americans need advice on how to budget properly. “While money matters can seem overwhelming at first, there is a simple formula for successful personal finances: know your credit score, create a manageable budget and build your savings,” says Chad Prashad, president and CEO of World Acceptance Corporation, the parent company of World Finance, a personal finance company. To help you get started, World Finance, which helps over one million customers each year improve their financial situations, is offering the following tips and insights: 1. Know your credit score: Many banks and lenders will let you review your credit score for free on a regular basis. If your credit score has room for improvement, a simple way to build it is through a credit building loan. This is a small loan designed to be easy to pay back, helping you establish positive credit through the lender. When taking out a loan, always be sure to use a reputable lender that reports to credit bureaus so that repaying your loan positively impacts your score. 2. Make, and stick to, a monthly budget: There is no one-size-fits-all way to make a budget so find a method that works best for you. A few systems to try include envelope budgeting (dividing expenditures into physical or digital envelopes representing different spending categories), zero-based budgeting (earmarking every last penny of your income to a useful purpose) and the 50/30/20 Rule (allocating 50% of your income to needs, 30% to wants and 20% to savings and debt reduction). 3. Start saving: While building a savings account can be daunting, it’s important to allocate one in your budget. Doing so will mean you have an emergency fund to keep you afloat when the unexpected happens in life. According to the OnePoll/World Finance survey, nearly 30% of Americans do not feel that they have the safety net or resources available to cover a financial setback greater than $400. If you find yourself in a situation where your savings won’t cover what you need, a personal installment loan with equal monthly payments designed to fit into your budget could be a good solution. Find a lender that will work with you to understand the complete picture of your finances, such as World Finance. To learn more, visit loansbyworld.com. “Every so often, it’s a good idea to take inventory of your financial wellness,” says Prashad. “Use the opportunity to understand your credit score, employ budgeting tactics and create a savings fund.

Consider Making a Difference in Your Community by
VOLUNTEERING By Marla Lewis President of the Houston Black Real Estate Association

any realtors, myself included, volunteer in the community throughout the year. We see great value in giving back to and improving our community. What better time than the holiday season to make a commitment to the community, especially in light of the hardships so many have endured as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. People often donate items to charitable organizations or give non-perishable food to local food banks, support causes like toy-drives, or directly give money to a worthy cause. But even if times are tight and you can’t spare any cash or purchase any items, you can still donate your time. Where would a soup kitchen be without the volunteers who serve the food? Where would an adult-education center be if no one wanted to teach adult-literacy classes? The point is that you almost certainly have something valuable to contribute, so whether you offer your time, donate items, give money, or do some combination of the three, take a look at the community and identify a need that speaks to you, then address it. When it comes right down to it, reasons to volunteer are very personal. At its root, volunteering involves the desire to help and serve, but volunteers also gain a tremendous amount from the experience. Most people volunteer just to help others, but there is nothing wrong with drawing some benefit for yourself, too. Sure, the real beneficiaries of your volunteer work will be those whom you directly help. But there’s more to it than that. In addition to investing in the community, you can also meet people, exchange ideas, get a break from your daily routine, learn valuable new skills, and more. Volunteering also gives you an excellent opportunity to be a positive role model. People, especially children, follow others’ examples. This can be a great way to teach kids about compassion and the importance of selfless actions.
No one wants to think about themselves being in a rough spot, but the truth is that many people will eventually find themselves in need at some point in their lives. Today you may be the person helping; tomorrow you may find yourself in a position of need. Throughout the year, please do not forget about these important causes all across our greater Houston community. Realtors understand the value of a strong community. Nothing adds strength to our city and neighborhoods like involved residents. So, from a quality-of-life perspective, your participation adds value to your community.
Times are tough for many in our community who may be suffering from the health, emotional and economic effects of the pandemic, or are still rebuilding after a severe weather event. Everyone’s time is valuable. We all know that. And that’s why I believe wholeheartedly that it’s more important now more than ever to offer a helping hand. The Women’s Council of the Houston Black Real Estate Association (HBREA) is one of the many organizations that are always looking for volunteers to help serve the community. You may check the website at www.hbreahouston.org for upcoming events. For other great organizations and ideas on how you can help, check out VolunteerMatch. org. These factors can help determine the best solution for you. (A short-term hardship is over within 12 months. A long-term hardship extends beyond 12 months.)
ContactYour YourServicer Servicer Contact Your servicer — the company where you send mortgage payments — is your best resource throughout the process. They will provide you with the available mortgage relief options based on your particular situation, which typically begins with being placed in a temporary forbearance program. Remember, your servicer is there to help. If you think you’re going to have trouble paying your mortgage, don’t wait. Call them immediately! And if you’re already behind on your mortgage or currently in a workout option, respond to their outreach efforts to keep an open dialogue going throughout the process.
Know KnowYour YourOptions Options No matter where you stand, there are solutions. Here are some to consider:
• Forbearance is an agreement between you and your loan servicer that either pauses or reduces monthly mortgage payments for a limited time. Consider forbearance if you’re currently unable to make payments but think you’ll be able to resume soon. • With payment deferral, missed mortgage payments move to the end of your loan term, but your monthly mortgage payment amount stays the same. Consider payment deferral if your hardship is resolved but you’re unable to repay missed mortgage payments as a lump sum or by increasing monthly payments. Freddie Mac Flex Modification, for example, provides up to a 20% mortgage payment reduction that permanently changes one or more of the original terms of your mortgage, such as the interest rate and mortgage term. Ask your loan servicer whether this may be an option for you. • A repayment plan increases mortgage payments for a short period to make up for missed payments. Plans must be longer than one month but no longer
than 12 months. Consider this option if you can afford your regular monthly payment, plus a little more, for a short period. • With partial reinstatement, you pay a portion of missed mortgage payments as a lump sum. To pay off the rest, your loan servicer works with you to create a repayment plan. • With full reinstatement, you pay the total owed mortgage payments as a lump sum, making your mortgage current. This is a good choice if you can afford it. • Refinancing your mortgage lowers your interest rate or replaces an adjustable-rate mortgage with a more affordable fixed-rate mortgage. This is a good choice if you’re currently on payments but would benefit from reduced payments in the future. This year, more than 600,000 homeowners with a Freddie Mac-backed mortgage refinanced into a more affordable loan. • COVID-19 relief is offered by many loan servicers to those struggling due to the pandemic. • Of course, if homeownership is no longer affordable or desirable, there are options too. Short sale and deed-in-lieu, for example, can help you exit your home without facing the costs associated with foreclosure.
