One of the most important lessons my late mother ever taught me was that no matter what you achieve in life, you have a responsibility to give back. It’s a lesson that has stuck with me over the years as I climbed the ladder of success. True, anyone that knows me knows I’m all about business - building it, nurturing it, and not resting until it’s a success. But there’s another important element to being an entrepreneur - that responsibility of giving back. When you hear the term giving back, chances are you immediately think of money. And in these bleak economic times that can be a hard pill to swallow. But as you’ll see in this edition, there are so many more ways you can give back. From donating services to employee hours, I’m confident you can find something within these pages that you can do, whether your business is thriving or barely getting by. I’m so proud of this issue. “Houston Will Not Be Left Behind in Benefiting from the National Financial Rescue Package!”

Sheila Jackson Lee Our system of government is strong and the constitutional protections of the full faith and credit of our government will protect Main Street America while we reform America’s Wall Street. The cries of our communities can be heard from all parts of our city, as holes continue to be cut into Americans’ wallets due to the economic crisis. The recent devastation caused by Hurricane Ike has only exacerbated the financial woes in the Houston Area. Because of the urgency of this matter, a meeting was held in the offices of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee with the Houston business community and the Assistant Secretary from the Department of Treasury responsible for handling the implementation of the Financial Rescue Package. The Secretary outlined the U.S. Treasury’s plan to help small, community, and regional banks get access to the $750 billion bailout funds. Congresswoman Jackson Lee remarked that “It is important that the U.S Department Of Treasury understand the economic engine that the city of Houston provides to our nation. The oil that keeps this engine running smoothly are Houston’s regional and local small business and banks.” For that reason, over 25 local organizations were on hand representing every facet of Houston’s financial community, which included the Houston Citizens Chamber of Commerce, representatives from the City of Houston, past and present, and banks and investment firms, along with the Greater Houston Partnership and others. After the meeting, the Houston business leaders discussed important issues and raised questions: How do we get funds here to Houston? We understand public banks are in line to receive funds but what about private banks? What will the role of the government be in the control of these institutions after they receive the funds? NOVEMBER 2008

Many are concerned about the dollar amount that will be set aside for those Americans facing foreclosure. Therefore, I fought to include language so that $10 billion would have been utilized for the Secretary of the Treasury to restructure mortgages and keep Americans from facing mortgage foreclosure. As Senator Barack Obama has recently stated, he is committed to altering the Bankruptcy Code in the future to assist homeowners on the question of restructuring their mortgages. Therefore, I fought to get Sense of Congress language that the Congress should review and amend the Bankruptcy Code to permit bankruptcy judges to address the question of individual home mortgage restructuring. In Section 109 of H.R. 1424, the Financial Rescue Package Legislation, which addresses “foreclosure mitigation efforts,” the language should be changed from “shall encourage” to “shall require” to provide stronger relief for Americans. While I fought to get the language included, I am working to ensure that H.R. 1424 is appropriate to bailout “Main Street.” To that end, I fought to include language in the bill so that the Secretary should be “required” to minimize foreclosures by all means. Additionally, H.R. 1424 should have included provisions so that corporate executives who may be convicted of criminal malfeasance in the financial sector might be barred from conducting financial business with the government for a period of seven (7) years. We will work to ensure that this issue is addressed in next congress. Wall Street and Main Street America will rebound. On October 10, 2008, the Associated Press reported that American International Group, Inc. (AIG) drew down another $9 billion in loans from the government to meet its demands for cash as the company scrambles to sell off its assets. The insurer has now borrowed $70.3 billion from the government within three weeks. This spending by the investors must be restrained in light of the financial crisis; the American working family, small businesses,

and small banks must have equal opportunity to receive the full financial benefit of this package. Therefore, I will continue to work with the Houston business community to ensure their participation. Credit is an ever important issue. Credits worthy individuals and small contractors are having a difficult time obtaining credit. Those who are borderline credit cases are not getting any support from creditors or banks. America’s focus should not solely be upon Treasury. We need to look at the next level of this process. We must look at how the funds will be managed. We must follow ensure that legislation like the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act are followed. Our local chambers must take on the job of informing small businesses about the processes of receiving these funds. We must stay vigilant on this issue. Houston is not viewed as a financial or banking center like other major cities such as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles. Nevertheless, I will ask the Secretary to come to Houston in November to discuss the bailout process with local leaders. We encourage each of you to go to the Treasury website and other websites to ascertain what is happening with the bailout and how Houston should be involved. Currently, the City of Houston is also facing a credit crunch. Houstonians, as well, have issues getting small loans from regional banks. This must be addressed before it affects our City’s growth. Over the coming days and months, I will work with Treasury and the Houston business community to make that Americans maintain their homes from mortgage foreclosure and that small, regional, and community banks obtain access to much needed funds. I look forward to working with the Houston business community and Treasury to make America stronger and make Houston’s economy more robust!

Many Houstonians are finding that the insurance company they put their faith and trust in has left them standing, wondering what to do. “The adjuster got out of his car and even though we told him we had roof damage he totally ignored it and never got on the roof,” said one frustrated customer. “So, now what?” Larry Thurman of APS Construction says, “It doesn’t surprise me. I see it all the time. Many adjusters are so overwhelmed with claims they just want to move through them as fast and as hassle-free as possible. However, they have an obligation to review the damages and pay properly.” Thurman recommends that if you are going to make repairs to your home that the insurance company has not seen or has not paid you on, be sure to take pictures before you begin the work, during the process and after the work has been completed. Keep up with all of your receipts, invoices and copies of checks showing you have made payment for the repair and never, never pay someone in cash. Just because the insurance company did not pay properly or did not recognize damages does not mean it is over. There are other steps that can be taken to get paid properly for damages. “You should have someone on your side explaining to the insurance adjuster the damages and what it is going to take to make proper repairs,” Thurman said. “APS

Consumers are more likely to buy from businesses associated with good causes. Large corporations spend fortunes on advertising that calls attention to their good deeds. But smaller businesses, particularly those with strong ties to their communities, don’t need huge advertising budgets to get their good deeds noticed. Put simply, doing good deeds for others can be good for business. Here are some questions to consider when developing a philanthropic plan: Is there a cause related to your business? Sometimes there’s a natural link between a business and a charity. A builder or contractor, for instance, could make a donation to Habitat for Humanity, an organization that makes it possible for low-income families to buy homes. A car dealership might make a positive connection with Mothers Against Drunk Driving or contribute to a local school’s driver’s education program. Likewise, it’s logical for a restaurant or food and beverage store to donate to a local soup kitchen. Is there a cause connected to your customers? Do your clients love the outdoors? Consider making a contribution the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation, or the National Audubon Society. If your customer base is comprise of primarily young families, sponsoring a Little League team or other youth organization might resonate with your audience. You can also involve customers by donating a small portion of sales to charity. Do you donate your money, your time, or your product? Money isn’t the only thing that you can donate to charity. Time, expertise and property are also worthy contributions. A computer company could donate equipment or instruction to local schools, libraries, or senior centers. Schools, churches, and other organizations often hold charity auctions to raise funds. Contributing your company’s product or service — a vacation package from a travel agent, a free consultation from a financial planner, or dinner for two from a restaurant — is an excellent way to spread your name in the community and create a positive image with customers.

As with most gifts, some prefer tangible items, like turkeys or hams, others prefer things that can be used in the office, such as mouse pads, books or pens, while still others prefer cash because it is more versatile. There is another reason a company might prefer to give things like turkeys or mouse pads: taxes. To the Internal Revenue Service, gifts such as turkeys and hams are nominal gifts meaning they have minimal dollar value and therefore fall under the de minimis fringe benefits rules. In other words, they can be given to employees without being included as part of employee wages that are subject to withholding and taxes, according to a statement from the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP). The Internal Revenue Section 132(e)(1) defines a de minimis fringe benefit as “any property or service the value of which is so small as to make accounting for it unreasonable of administratively impracticable after taking into account the frequency with which similar fringes are provided by the employer to the employer’s

Donations of trees, benches, or playground equipment to park districts or towns are often recognized with a plaque or other marker. Donations to auctions or sponsorships of local events and performances are usually noted in event programs. Send press releases to local media outlets. Make sure the release focuses on the results: who benefits from the contribution or project and how. The press doesn’t want to hear about how great you are, but they might be interested in the beneficiaries of your charity work. You can also share information on your charitable efforts in your place of business or on your Web site.

Does your small business support a charity or non-profit group? As your business becomes more and more successful, you will have requests from different groups in your community for sponsorships, donations, participation in events or other ways of giving. Most large corporations have programs for social responsibility and community involvement, and it is a great idea for small businesses, too. Supporting a charity or non-profit group can help your business grow, but most of all, it can be a great way to give back to your community and help support causes that need your help. Whatever group you decide to support, be sure to do your homework, and check with the local Better Business Bureau. You may want to pick one “preferred” group that you support with most of your available time and money. Also, keep a small amount of money in your monthly budget for other charities. Usually, you can buy small ads in programs or yearbooks for $5 and up, or sponsor a hole in a charity golf tournament, or supply soft drinks for a bake sale. These little bits of money can buy a ton of goodwill and public relations. Here are a few reasons you should support a charity or non-profit endeavor in your community: 1. The opportunity to give back. This is the top reason to seek out a charity to support. It allows you to share and pass on some of your good fortune and success. Doing so in your own community can bring business benefits, too. 2. Community support and good will. Being part of a community is vital for small business. In the days of the mega stores and the Internet, it can be difficult to sustain a small business. One way to ensure that your business thrives in your community is to help build a thriving community. 3. Marketing opportunities. When you donate money, time, products or services, charity and non-profit groups usually have some sort of recognition program. Having your business name included is good promotion. It is one of the reasons you see children’s athletic teams with business names on their uniforms. People are more apt to support businesses they feel are part of their world. 4. The opportunity to support causes you believe in. It is great if you can tie your business purpose to a particular charity, but if you cannot, you can pick a charity or community group that you are passionate about and support them. For example, a baby clothing store can support baby safety, prevention of child abuse, breastfeeding, and many other causes that “make sense” for a baby clothing business to support. But, if the owner has a passion to help animals, she can certainly promote those causes in a baby store, too. 5. Contributions don’t have to drain your bank account. Community Service Anyone? Business is more than just what appears on your profit and loss statements. It is an important part of the social fabric and it needs to give back as much as it gets. Being a part of the community is more than just sponsoring a local baseball team (although that’s good) and having an annual employee food drive (although that’s good). It’s more than just trying to make a good impression for the sake of making a good impression; it’s about simply doing good in the world because it’s the right thing to do. Of course, there will be benefits to your business. You’ll get good press, for example. People will patronize your business if they think positively about you. You’ll be on the “top-of-the-mind” for people when they need your service. What should you do? There is so much need! Here are two examples: Back before long distance became really cheap, I remember a store that welcomed several recently immigrated families to call home for a fifteen minute holiday call over the Christmas season. You can be sure they made those families’ holiday.

When we watch the news or read the daily headlines, we are constantly bombarded by doom and gloom. Giving back may be the last thing on anyone’s mind because we may feel that we have to keep what we have for a somewhat ‘rainy day.’ Or, we see all of the celebrities donating millions of dollars to a ‘cause’ and may feel that our fifty dollars won’t make much of a difference. Dear friend, you couldn’t be more wrong. Though giving back may be difficult, there is still something to give. You can give love, a smile, a kind word, or a gesture of appreciation that you are still here. Recently, I spent a few days in a hospital’s waiting room where someone dear to me experienced a great loss. At the close of the evening, my being there, and supporting through kind words, helped to make a difficult situation bearable. My gift was simple yet heartfelt and it met the need. Each one of us has been blessed with something to give. It is not so much the cost of the gift – but the act alone. Many of us try to attach monetary value to the gifts we give but find ourselves detached from the act of giving, in and of itself. A good gift is a gift that is always given out of love, whether it is appreciated by the recipient or not. If someone needs a listening ear, don’t over talk them, lend them your ear - let them talk – remember it’s about giving. If you have been given a scholarship – mentor someone or purchase their books for the upcoming semester; if you have been helped along the way – reach out and continue the show of love. If you tell someone to ‘call you if they need you’, and they call you 3 weeks later, keep your word. Teach your children the value of giving by being a giver. We have to remember that giving is an act of love. The most powerful thing you can do to make a difference in someone’s life, whether it is your spouse, child or friend is to give of your time, your talents and your resources. Because you are special, it will be a meaningful gift to the one receiving it! Don’t let the ‘signs of the times’ scare you into living a self-centered lifestyle. Remember everyone you meet is struggling

The story also appeared in the newspaper. And in the very tight ethnic community, you can be sure that it was talked about and their store was patronized well. Another company that does a great job of getting and leveraging its own good deeds is 1800GotJunk. Their phone number and name are cleverly combined and they go about doing good (when they’re not doing business). Recently, they made the front page of a community paper for cleaning up a local park that had become run down. They’ll tell you that they did it because it was the right thing to do. That may be true, but they also got a nice full- page article with a big color picture and plenty of positive promotion for the cost of two staff wages and a truck for a couple hours, much less than they’d have paid for a half page black and white ad buried deep in the paper.

So what should you do? The first company, which gave away free long distance phone calls, didn’t do anything within their industry, but they did something that was just plain nice, something that no one else was doing. 1800GotJunk did the same thing that many others have done but it was something within their industry. Both companies kept it low-key - not a lot of media hype, no flashy press releases. In both cases they identified a need and filled it - and it didn’t come across as a weak attempt at publicity. They rolled up their sleeves and DID something - unlike many companies that are happy to cut a big check amid handshakes and photo ops. And (here’s your hint) they focused in on a community. In both cases, their work was done within a tight-knit community - the kind where people notice things and talk to each other.

So what should you do? • Find a need WITHIN a tight-knit community (possibly something in your industry but if you can’t find something, that’s okay). • Plan it out. • Get buy-in from your staff. • Let a reporter know what you’re doing. (That’s okay, too. There’s nothing wrong with getting some media coverage for it). • Get started and complete it with a smile on your face. Some call it karma. Others call it “good coming back to you” and others call it

every one of them. The economic problem we’re facing in America is only a by-product of the real problem. The real problem being that man hasn’t acquiesced to the spiritual knowledge that he owns nothing, has nothing, and has no right to keep anything from those in need. It all belongs to God! The key to giving back starts with an understanding of who owns what. Houses and land, bank accounts and 401k portfolios, the earth and everything in it—everything belongs to God, 100 percent. There is nothing that does not belong to him. Even we ourselves are no longer our own according to 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “You are not your own; you were bought with a price.” If we don’t own our lives, how can we possible own anything else? I know this is a little deep for most people, especially those who are rich and have much. But stay with me. This giving principle will help us understand the significance of what we do or don’t do for others. Without the recognition that God owns us it is difficult to give back in a secular, affluent western society where we are often measured by what we own. Having this mindset, greed works against the principle of giving back. Over the last eight years America has plummeted into a selfish, winner-take-all, get-all-I-can, greed-struck abyss of madness. How do we turn it around? How do we redirect the sails of change and begin to be a country that practices the principle of giving back? It starts with you! No matter how selfish the world becomes, never stop giving back. In 1985 Richard Pryor played the role of Montgomery Brewster in the Hollywood film “Brewster’s Millions.” Richard (Brewster) finds out that he is related to a deceased millionaire, who has left him $300 million dollars. Oprah also recently produced a show that has a similar theme to Brewster’s Millions: “Oprah’s Big Give,” a television series whereby individuals were given a bundle of money and told they couldn’t keep it for themselves, but they had to give it away. Like only Oprah can do, the show is very touchy feely, heartwarming and inspiring, showing us that no matter how little or great one’s possessions or talents, we can all give back. As I see it, giving back is not an option. Never underestimate the quality of your contribution based on size. Those who are less fortunate will appreciate your gift in terms of the intangible love expressed. Despite what you hear on Fox, CNN, or your local news headlines about how bad the economy is; giving is always in order. Hurricane Ike hit Houston during the worst economic fall since the Great Depression. Nevertheless, thousands of people were concerned enough about their neighbor to give of their time and talent to help them, without expecting material compensation. The truth of the matter is that we don’t have a right not to give back. It’s not an option! Hundreds of political analysts and economic strategists have sifted through all the variables in laying blame on who’s at fault for this economic mess that we’re in. It’s not one person or entity that’s at fault but a terrible spirit that has possessed America: GREED. It has been said that if you ask a rich man how much more money does he need, the answer would be ‘just a little bit more than what I have.’ It doesn’t matter what person or company the media pipes into our living room night after night depicting the villains of our economic ruins.
