HOW BUSINESS LEADERS ARE POSITIONING THEIR COMPANIES
AMID MIXED RECESSION VIEWS
By d-mars.com News Provider
Halfway through 2023, views on whether a recession is likely to occur before year-end are mixed. JPMorgan Chase's 2023 Midyear Business Leaders Outlook survey found that 45% of business leaders anticipate a recession in 2023 or believe the economy is currently in one, down from 65% at the beginning of the year. However, 36% don't expect a recession to happen, and 20% are unsure. JPMorgan Chase recently surveyed U.S. midsize business leaders to understand their economic outlook and business challenges heading into the second half of the year, as well as how they plan to navigate the evolving landscape.
While stronger-than-expected economic growth to start the year may have impacted business leaders' conviction of a recession, they continue to face ongoing macroeconomic challenges - including persistent labor shortages, inflation and increased competition - posing headwinds to their companies.
Preparing for uncertainty is never far from the minds of business leaders. The Midyear Business Leaders Outlook survey uncovered three ways they are positioning their companies for success.
1. INCREASING EFFICIENCIES
Particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic, business leaders have sought out greater efficiencies by investing in software and modernizing business processes to better facilitate collaboration and streamline operations. The rise of new and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly moved onto business leaders' radars.
The survey found that nearly 4 in 10 business leaders (38%) are already using or considering using AI tools, such as generative AI and language processing software. For businesses that have adopted or are considering adopting AI tools, more than half (53%) are integrating them into business operations, and 46% are tapping them for internal and/or external communications.
2. ADAPTING TO INFLATIONARY PRESSURES
U.S. inflation surged to a 40-year high of more than 9%, measured by the Consumer Price Index, at the midway point of 2022. This measure of inflation has moderated to 3% year-over-year as of June, marking a new two-year low. Still, rising wages and higher interest rates continue to pose challenges for business leaders. Labor markets remain tight and borrowing costs have risen sharply over the past year amid the fastest Fed hiking cycle in decades. Nearly 7 in 10 business leaders (68%) think the Fed has done enough to tighten monetary policy and should pause rate hikes in the current economic landscape.
While inflation is slowing, most business leaders aren't yet seeing lower prices. In fact, nearly 8 in 10 business leaders (79%) say their costs of doing business have risen in the past six months.
While that is down compared with 91% at the beginning of 2023, inflation remains the single greatest factor in pricing decisions that ultimately influence the bottom line. As a result, businesses are passing higher costs on to consumers, as three-quarters of respondents (75%) say they're likely to continue raising prices for goods and services.
3. PREPARING FOR THE UNEXPECTED
Business leaders have demonstrated impressive resilience and adaptability despite new and ongoing challenges. The majority are confident in their company's performance in the year ahead; yet, their confidence in the global and national economy remains tempered -
just 15% of respondents are optimistic about the global economy, and fewer than 3 in 10 respondents (29%) are bullish on the national economy, though up from 22% at the start of the year.
As business leaders focus inward to shore up their own performance, many are planning to introduce new products and services (53%) and prioritize their most profitable products (42%) over the next 12 months. Other considerations for enhancing a company's stability include maintaining strong liquidity and adequate cash balances.

Old Folks Saying
Confidence building is crucial in life, as it enhances one's worth by embracing selfawareness. This timeless adage celebrates the essence of a person's true nature. It is unnecessary to conform to others' perceptions of oneself. Instead, remain resolute in your self-perception rather than relying on external opinions.

SEAN “DIDDY” COMBS GIFTS BACK PUBLISHING RIGHTS TO BAD BOY ARTISTS
Recording Academy during his 2020 Industry Icon Award acceptance speech for undervaluing Black artists in R&B and rap. Ma$e confronted his former label boss in an Instagram post. He revealed that he offered $2 million to buy back his publishing, but Combs said no. Ma$e further alleged,
Your past business practices knowingly have continued to starve your artist purposely and have been extremely unfair to the very same artist that helped u obtain that Icon Award on the iconic Bad Boy label.
The post shed light on longstanding grievances, including Combs retaining Ma$e’s publishing rights from 24 years ago in exchange for a mere $20,000.
In a later interview with The Breakfast Club in 2022, Combs stated that Ma$e owed him $3 million for an album advance that was never received.

Sean “Diddy” Combs has gifted his Bad Boy family with life-changing anniversary gifts. According to Billboard, the music mogul has decided to return the publishing rights of his label’s artists and songwriters to their rightful owners.
The move resulted in Bad Boy Entertainment’s host of creatives quickly signing agreements to regain control of their intellectual property. Ma$e, Faith Evans, The LOX, 112, and the Estate of the Notorious B.I.G. are among those who have already inked deals to reclaim their rights, as per Billboard. Combs started the process in May 2021 to sell the catalog, but the details of the arrangements are still unknown.
Bad Boy Entertainment, founded by Combs in 1993, has enjoyed a storied history in the music industry. The label quickly became successful, with many albums and singles that went gold, platinum, or multiplatinum. The artists included Craig Mack, the Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans, Ma$e, Total, 112, The LOX, and Diddy himself. Over the years, the label’s illustrious roster has also featured talents like Carl Thomas, Shyne, Dream, Danity Kane, and French Montana. Additionally, it housed an in-house writer/producer collective known as The Hitmen, which included notable figures like the late Chucky Thompson, Stevie J, Deric “D-Dot” Angelettie, and Mario Winans. Recent releases under the Bad Boy banner include Machine Gun Kelly’s 2022 album “Mainstream Sellout” and Janelle Monae’s latest offering, “The Age of Pleasure.”

GRAND TEXAS AMUSEMENT PARK'S JOURNEY TO REVIVE BIG RIVERS WATERPARK
complete with roller coasters and more, are in the works.
Unfortunately, no specific opening date has been announced at this time. While the park continues to develop its plans, the design for the family entertainment center is still being finalized. Details such as whether it will include bowling, laser tag, or rock climbing have not been decided yet, as the park is conducting research to assess market demand.
I need to make sure that we've got the cooperation of all the different utility providers, the cooperation of the government agencies, cooperation of the weather and the desire of the public. So we're going to make sure that all those are in place before we are able to open the amusement park,
owner Monty Galland explained.
"We were very unaware of all that was required to accomplish the amusement park side," he continued. "We didn't know what we didn't know when we started the project."
By d-mars.com News Provider
The failed amusement park known as Grand Texas, which was supposed to bring thrills and excitement to the Houston area, is still trying to make a comeback. In 2013, the park's parent company went bankrupt, leaving locals disappointed
and longing for a new amusement park experience. Although Grand Texas managed to open its water park, Big Rivers Waterpark and Adventures, in 2019, little has been said about the larger vision for the park. However, according to representatives from Grand Texas, the park is still determined to become a reality. The next phase of the park, an indoor entertainment area similar to Main Event, is set to open in 2025. Additionally, plans for the amusement park itself,
Galland and his team made the decision to begin with a waterpark as their initial project, rather than an amusement park. In 2015, a total of $15 million had already been invested in the infrastructure. According to Galland, they were on track to obtain financing for the waterpark that year. However, just one month before finalizing the deal, the bank withdrew its financial support due to the impact of the oil market downturn. As a result, they had to sell a portion of the land, but eventually managed to secure additional funding in 2018. The waterpark finally opened its doors with a soft launch in 2019.

MEET REESE REID-HART: THE INSPIRING NEW PRESIDENT OF LONE STAR COLLEGE MONTGOMERY

De 'Reese Reid-Hart has been appointed as the president of Lone Star College-Montgomery. He assumed the role on September 1st, following the announcement on July 28th. With 25 years of experience in higher education administration, Reid-Hart has been a part of Lone Star College since August 2016. Prior to becoming president, he served as the vice president of instruction for the campus in August
2020. Reid-Hart joins a cohort of new leaders within the Lone Star College system. Mario Castillo, the newest chancellor, was officially appointed on August 11th. Stephen Head, the former chancellor who led the institution for nine years, retired on August 1st. Before his retirement, Head expressed his confidence in the future of the campus under ReidHart's leadership.
Prior to his retirement, Head gave his green flag to Reid-Hart. “Dr. Reid-Hart has demonstrated integrity and the highest ethical standards over her career," Head
EDUCATION
Reid-Hart's foray into the realm of higher education began during her own academic pursuits. Although her entry into the industry was serendipitous, she expressed an immediate affinity for it. Subsequently, Reid-Hart assumed various leadership roles at Kennedy-King College in Illinois, including Dean of Instruction and Continuing Education, Chief Student Affairs Officer as Dean of Student Services, and Associate Dean of Students, prior to relocating to Houston with her spouse.
My favorite day of the year is commencement day when our students are walking across the stage and they're just so excited about the future. I get emotional when I think about it. Just knowing that we are impacting our students, changing lives and giving opportunities that otherwise may not be there, that's what I love about it.
As the President, Reid-Hart has identified three key priorities, namely, fostering a culture of excellence, forging strong partnerships with the community, and placing a greater emphasis on student outcomes and success. Reid-Hart views challenges as opportunities, including the need to re-prioritize funding towards student success.
According to Reid-Hart, the success of students is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of the college's success. While acknowledging that the college has always prioritized student success, Reid-Hart believes that there is room for improvement by examining the college's operations and the impact of its services on students.

FOCUSING ON OUTCOMES IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION LEADS TO LONG-TERM SUCCESS
soft skills and social issues in early childhood education over subjects like math, history, geography, and science. Parents are looking for a well-rounded experience that isn't necessarily aimed at teaching the common subjects that come to mind when thinking about "school" in general.
Instead, parents are more likely to want to narrow in on "outcomes" that will propel their children forward in areas that will help them become successful adults. So what are the key outcomes parents should look for when choosing an early childhood education program? Experts at Kiddie Academy say the outcomes of character, confidence, curiosity, connection, critical thinking and creative expression are the most important.
By d-mars.com News Provider
Being a parent means fostering the attributes children need to succeed in life. The aim is to create humans who will be a benefit to society, exemplifying strong character, morals, intelligence, confidence and more. That's why it's important to be intentional with what children are taught from a young age, beginning in early childhood education programs. According to a survey of parents with children ages 0-6 conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Kiddie Academy Educational Child Care, parents prioritize learning
When we concentrate on building skills to benefit children for life, especially at a young age, we aren't solely focused on teaching domains of education that increase subject knowledge, but instead on building a developmental base that will form the foundation for future education,
said Ocie Watson-Thompson, Ed.D, at Towson University and Kiddie Academy curriculum advisory board member. For children of preschool age, focusing on the outcomes of hands-on, play-based experiences is key. Socialemotional development is another result of early childhood education that should not be overlooked. Everything a child learns in a childcare program should build a developmental foundation.
According to NAEYC, early math, for example, is not
about the rote learning of discrete facts like how much 5 + 7 equals or worksheets with one correct answer. Rather, it's about children actively making sense of the world around them and using open-ended playful exploration to encourage children to solve problems in real situations. In this case, the outcome of critical thinking is built around subtle mathematical principles, providing the foundation for learning more complex concepts as children grow.
Other outcomes like confidence, connection and creative expression are built by helping children recognize their strengths and abilities, fostering positive relationships with peers and adults, and through imaginative crafts and play. It's a building-block concept. Each outcome is the first block in what will eventually grow into a fully developed and sturdy tower.
Parents today find it more important for children to learn practical life skills over traditional academics in the early childhood development years, according to the survey. And it appears they're on to something. Focusing on the practical outcomes a child can learn in their early years can make all the difference in kickstarting a lifetime of learning.

NORTON PREPS PARENTS WITH CRASH COURSE IN BEST BACK-TO-SCHOOL PRACTICES
By d-mars.com News Provider
Less Than Half of Families Surveyed Trust School Tech Policies and Security Measures
As parents send kids back to school, many face growing concerns around the safety of their children. While most parents (70%) believe they know enough to keep their families safe online, nearly a third do not think schools are doing enough to educate and protect children from online threats, and less than half trust school technology policies. Norton, a consumer Cyber Safety brand of Gen (NASDAQ: Gen) released expert tips to help families have a safe, informed return to the classroom.
and using strong, unique passwords can significantly reduce the risk of cyber threats. Additionally, enabling two-factor authentication provides an extra layer of protection to ensure that only authorized users can access sensitive information.
UNDERSTAND YOUR SCHOOL TECH POLICY
Norton encourages students and parents to familiarize themselves with their school's tech policies. By understanding these policies, which outline acceptable use and potential risks, students can navigate the virtual landscape confidently and responsibly. Norton advises students to follow these policies and report any suspicious activity or policy violations to school administrators immediately.
CHECK SCHOOL COMMUNICATION APP PRIVACY SETTINGS
said Leena Elias, Chief Product Officer at Gen. "Whether it's securing students' devices with the powerful protection of Norton 360 or helping parents foster healthy digital habits with Norton Family, we are here to help the whole family to be safe so they can focus on learning and thriving.”
SECURE YOUR DEVICES
Securing your device is a critical aspect of online safety. Norton takes the guesswork out of getting the protection the whole family needs to stay safe online with Norton 360 plans that come with Norton Family parental controls and a VPN, or virtual private network, to help secure private information while using public Wi-Fi. Installing reliable security software, keeping it up to date,
With technology more pervasive than ever in and out of classrooms, it is vital for students and parents to understand the privacy settings in school communication applications such as Clever, Classroom Dojo, and Slack. These platforms often store personal information and facilitate interactions between students, teachers, and parents. Norton advises families to review and optimize their privacy settings to control the visibility of personal data and ensure that only intended recipients have access to sensitive information.
FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THREATS LIKE PHISHING
Phishing attacks continue to be a common threat in the digital world. Norton advises parents to educate themselves about phishing techniques and share this knowledge with their children. Teaching children how to spot phishing emails, texts, or suspicious websites can prevent them from falling victim to scams and malicious activities online. Last month, Norton launched
Phictionary, a dictionary that breaks down real threats and explains how to spot and keep safe from cyber-attacks.
TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT ONLINE SAFETY
Norton suggests using The Smart Talk, an interactive tool designed by Norton and the National PTA for parents to facilitate dialogues about online behavior, privacy, and the responsible use of technology. By engaging in open and honest discussions, parents can guide their children in making informed decisions online.
Our kids are increasingly relying on technology at school, so it is crucial to prioritize online security and protect personal information,
said Krista Todd, Chief Marketing Officer at Gen. "Our family of trusted Cyber Safety brands is here to empower families with the knowledge and tools necessary to create a safe digital learning environment at every age."
Cyber Safety can also be part of the school curriculum with the help of Discovery Education's My Digital Life site, which offers tools and resources for educators to help inspire the digital citizen in every student. Sign up for program updates and stay tuned for the release of upcoming educator resources available next month. In today's digital age, Cyber Safety is a critical aspect of preparing children for the school year. Norton is committed to ensuring a safe and secure online learning environment for students. By following these Cyber Safety tips, students and parents can minimize the risks associated with online activities and focus on educational opportunities.

According to a study by Always Platinum, modern women exhibit a range of characteristics that distinguish them from their predecessors. Specifically, contemporary women are inclined to split the bill on a dinner date, express their opinions freely, and possess the ability to balance their emotions between being soft and strong as per the situation demands. Additionally, they are driven by a desire to demonstrate compassion and kindness in their daily lives, strive to be good friends, and set a positive example for others to follow. Women also place great emphasis on the notion of choice, whether it pertains to their professional aspirations, their decision to be a stay-at-home mother, or their preference for a single life over marriage.
In the current era, women are confident in their ability to lead business meetings, stand up to their superiors when necessary, and aspire to promote gender equality in the workplace. The study further revealed that modern women are characterized by their support for those with less confidence, their unwavering commitment to exercising their right to vote, and their advocacy for equal treatment. It is noteworthy that the definition of femininity has undergone significant changes over time.
The 10th Annual Top 30 Influential Women of Houston Awards, hosted by d-mars.com, serves as a platform to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions of women in our city. This event aims to bring attention to the crucial role played by women in their respective careers and communities, not only within Houston but also on a global scale. These women have shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for others to succeed, thereby promot -
ing gender equality and empowerment. The awards ceremony serves to raise awareness about the importance of women’s achievements and their impact on society. Women today have more opportunities not because they demand them, but because they are actively creating them. They bravely shatter glass ceilings and overcome obstacles in their respective domains, not only for their own advancement but also for the betterment of future generations of women. Let us not forget that while women excel in their professional lives, they also fulfill important roles as wives, mothers, caregivers, church members, and community volunteers.
Top 30 candidates have the option to self-nominate or be nominated by others. Our goal is to attract a varied pool of candidates who are dedicated to advancing business growth, achieving professional excellence, and making a positive impact on the community. The Top 30 Women are particularly interested in those who are actively shaping the economic trajectory of both large and small corporations, as well as independent firms, politics and more.
Kimberly Floyd, who is the Chief of Operations and Managing Editor for the company shared why the nominees’ influence is important.
“Their attitude of servitude is what should inspire us most. In a self-serving world, these women shine a light of selflessness that has been a driving force behind their great achievements,” she said. “Not only are they successful, but they continue to provide a hand for those around them, so they too are successful. They understand and apply the concept of, “There’s room at the table for everyone.” This is what truly makes this year’s honorees top women.”
She continued, “Each honoree has an awareness that challenges are not a reason to give up, but to instead give more of yourself with persistence, faith, and hard work to get to the other side. The honorees are risk-takers, relentless in their pursuit of level playing fields, understanding that they have a responsibility and duty to create a path for this generation and the next generation of women to be effective leaders as well. The Top 30 Influential Women of Houston recipients are leaving a legacy, a permanent mark of excellence in their respective areas of expertise.”

REVOLUTIONIZING VEIN TREATMENT: A COMPARISON OF MODERN TECHNIQUES AND TRADITIONAL VEIN STRIPPING
By: Dr. Tonie Reincke Reincke Vein Center
The progress of modern vein treatments has marked a substantial leap from traditional vein stripping procedures. Reincke Vein Center is dedicated to employing these cuttingedge vein treatments, delivering exceptional care to their patients. In the past, vein stripping, a surgical procedure, was commonly used for treating vein disease. However, it had several drawbacks and limitations that modern technology has sought to overcome. Here's a comparison between modern vein treatment technology and vein stripping:
Modern vein treatment technologies, such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and foam sclerotherapy, are minimally invasive. RFA involves inserting a small catheter through a tiny incision and using heat to seal the affected vein. In the case of foam sclerotherapy, chemicals are injected through a needle to close the diseased vein.
The simplicity and effectiveness of these procedures allow the physician, such as Dr. Reincke who typically spends no more than 15 minutes for each procedure. In contrast, vein stripping is an invasive surgical procedure that requires making several large incisions and physically removing the damaged veins. The out-dated procedure could take anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half.
Minimally invasive techniques have shorter recovery times compared to vein stripping. Patients undergoing modern procedures typically experience less pain, minimal scarring, and are able to return to regular activities the day of treatment. Vein stripping, on the other hand, involves a recovery period of 6 weeks and more noticeable scarring due to the evasiveness of the surgery.
to be cost-effective compared to vein stripping. This is due to the procedures being office-based, reduced anesthesia requirements, and faster recovery times.
Modern vein treatments often require only local anesthesia, meaning patients are awake during the procedure and experience minimal discomfort. This also allows physicians to perform these procedures in an office setting. In contrast, vein stripping is hospital based and usually involves general anesthesia, which carries its own set of risks and complications. Some complications include: infection, deep vein thrombosis, and nerve damage. While costs can vary based on location and specific circumstances, minimally invasive procedures tend
In summary, modern vein treatment technology has revolutionized the way vein disease is treated. Minimally invasive procedures have shown comparable or even better success rates in treating vein disease. These treatments largely replaced the traditional vein stripping method due to their numerous benefits, including faster recovery, and lower risk of complications. If you're considering vein treatment, come to Reincke Vein Center and consult directly with Dr. Reincke to determine the best approach based on your specific condition and circumstances. The vein guru, who specializes in Vascular & Interventional Radiology, can be found at 1111 Highway 6, Suite 170 Sugar Land, TX 77478 @ 281-394-4446.

WHY YOUR SKIN ISN'T GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP
dermatologist. "By using a retinol serum at night, you can enhance the activities that are already naturally occurring. This can help your skin look its best when you wake up in the morning, and with continued use, improve radiance, texture and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles." Here are tips to revamp your nightly skincare routine so you'll get the amazing results you want.
Make sure to thoroughly remove dirt, grime and makeup
By: d-mars.com News Provider
If you're looking to improve your skin's appearance, ask yourself: What are you doing for your skin while you're asleep? Because about one-third of your day is spent sleeping, make the most of that valuable time by taking proactive steps so you can wake up with smoother, firmer, healthier-looking skin every morning.
"When you sleep, skin cell turnover rates increase, and your skin repairs itself from the day's damage. But there's more that you can do to help your skin while you're sleeping," says Dr. Joshua Zeichner, board-certified
Even when you're feeling tired and the hour is late, it's vital to take time to cleanse your face before bedtime, removing all traces of makeup before applying serum and/or moisturizer. Otherwise, dirt, oils and makeup residue will be sitting on your skin all night long. By not removing those impurities, you're preventing your skin cells from being able to completely renew themselves overnight, leaving your skin looking dull and tired the next day.
Use RoC Retinol Correxion® Line Smoothing Night Serum Capsules
After cleansing your face, use a retinol product that will refresh your skin overnight. Retinol is known as the
gold standard of skincare by many experts due to its benefits that work deep within the skin's surface to reveal renewed, fresher-looking skin. RoC was first to discover a method for stabilizing retinol, combining it with ingredients like vitamin E and oxygen boosters to make it safe and effective for daily use. RoC Retinol Correxion Night Serum Capsules provide perfectly measured doses of pure RoC retinol in easy-to-use, 100% biodegradable capsules, filled with a lightweight fluid that drenches your skin and dries to a silky finish. Even better, this magic serum in a jar is great for traveling and is TSA approved - just pop in your bag and go!
The high concentration of pure RoC retinol is combined with a bio-derived antioxidant to deliver twice the effectiveness of vitamin E to stop environmental aggressors that accelerate signs of aging. Each capsule is designed to rival prescription skincare without the irritation; 100% of testers had 0% irritation. After one night you'll wake up to smoother, revitalized-looking skin. According to a clinical study, 97% had visibly reduced fine lines and wrinkles. After four weeks of use, Retinol Correxion Night Serum Capsules were clinically

Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune disorder that leads to hair loss, a ffects millions of people worldwide, with many facing additional health challenges such as Lupus and other autoimmune conditions. Dr. Leola Anifowoshe, a distinguished functional medicine practitioner and experienced Trichologist, is dedicated to empowering individuals with comprehensive, holistic solutions for their hair and scalp health.
September's focus on Alopecia Areata Awareness is a timely reminder of the challenges faced by individuals with autoimmune disorders,
proven to visibly show firmer skinand will continue delivering results over time.
Don't neglect your pillowcases
If you're going to press your face against a pillowcase for 6-8 hours every night, wouldn't it be ideal to make sure yours are really clean? Wash your pillowcases frequently in hot water so you'll be sleeping on a clean surface each night. Consider buying extra pillowcases so you can swap them out almost nightly. Your skin will thank you.
Moisturize your bedroom, not just your face
If you have dry skin or live in an arid climate, it may benefit your skin to use a portable humidifier in your bedroom. Keeping your bedroom's humidity levels between 40-60% will help your skin naturally absorb more hydration overnight, while you're (literally) getting your beauty sleep. Following these steps, you'll soon see the results - a healthier, more youthful complexion that you'll be happy to wake up to every morning.

BLACK VETERANS AND INACCESSIBILITY TO MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES

Despite taking the same risk of death and costly sacrifice to their mental well-being, Black Veterans continue to suffer as mental health services are statistically less accessible for the demographic than their white counterparts.
Despite taking the same risk of death and costly sacrifice to their mental well-being, Black Veterans continue to suffer as mental health services are statistically less accessible for the demographic than their white counterparts. Institutional racism continues to persist through channels of assistance for Black Veterans as the Department of Veterans Affairs has acknowledged that discrimination has likely played a major role in major discrepancies in assistance.
We recognize that in the past there has been institutional discrimination that may have played a role in the adjudication of benefits,
VA press secretary Terrence Hayes told Axios News last month has taken on an initiative to address disparities.
Documents released through an open records request Project in Baltimore showed proof of racial discrimination disability benefits offered to Veterans. Data retrieved of all Black Veterans who applied for physical or mental the VA, compared to 10.6% of white Veterans. This is Black Veterans seeking disability benefits for PTSD rate of denial for white counterparts.

month following an announcement that the department
request filed earlier this year by Black Veterans discrimination in the accessibility of mental health/ retrieved from the fiscal year of 2023 showed that 15.52% mental health benefits were denied assistance by is consistent with reports from 2017, showing that PTSD were denied 57% of the time, compared to a 43%
consistently higher grant rate than Black Veterans every year. rate (43% compared to 31.7% for white Veterans), Black whites.
Even among those receiving services, Black Veterans often have worse outcomes, according to a study featured in Psychiatric Services, Volume 73 in 2022.
Of the 2,870 Veterans treated nationally in VA Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs in fiscal year 2017, Black Veterans receiving services from the VA experienced a higher rate of depression symptom recurrence 4 months after discharge compared to white Veterans. While services were proven to improve conditions across demographics, Black Veterans still experienced markedly poorer outcomes. The effects of these institutional failures are apparent and run deep, contributing to the framework of larger social issues with devastating repercussions. According to a study by the National Center on Homelessness Among Veterans, Black Veterans are substantially prevalent in the homeless population compared to other Veterans, comprising 39% of the total homeless veteran population despite making up only 11% of the total veteran population.
Outcomes in PTSD and depression are typically worse, and likewise, Black Veterans are more likely to fall into alcoholism even with similar levels of consumption to their white counterparts, according to the American Journal of Psychiatry.
Additionally, a study conducted by the nonprofit research group Rand Corp. showed there were 1.76 suicide attempts among Black troops for each by a white service member. As services falter, so does the quality of life for Black Veterans compared to white former service members, resulting in higher documented rates of homelessness, alcohol use disorder, and suicide.
Texas is home to over 1.6 million Veterans, with one-fourth of all Veterans statewide residing in the DFW area. Dallas previously made the news in 2016 when on July 7, Black veteran Micah Xavier Johnson killed five officers and wounded seven others before being slain in a stand-off with police Downtown. Reflecting disillusionment, pain, and a documented resentment of a deeply flawed system exacerbated by increasing violence against Black Americans by law enforcement, the incident illustrated the result of the systemic failures of the Department of Veterans Affairs as much as it did the institutional racism present throughout American life.
As an Army Reserve Afghan War veteran, Johnson showed warning signs of potential violence prior to the calculated attack on white law enforcement. He was previously recommended for mental health counseling by a fellow soldier who accused him of sexual harassment. Stating that they were platonic friends of over four years, she recalled an event when Johnson punched out a car window during an outburst, severing an artery and requiring medical treatment.
Following an inspection, Johnson was deemed a threat to others and disarmed by his commanding officer. After a period of high stress and ostracization, Johnson was mistakenly honorably discharged according to the Army and never was provided counseling. This and other details were released following his death.
Other Veterans, such as Paul, 72, a former Army sergeant living in South Dallas that served in the Vietnam War, have suffered lifelong cases of PTSD while continuing to work and seek out services from the VA.
“I still have nightmares from what we did,” Paul says, explaining that insomnia brought on by PTSD has left him sleepless most nights.
“When I go in to get help, I have to stand in line behind a hundred other people. They expect you to smile and be polite. I fought for this country. I bled for this country,” Paul says. “All of my guys came back. Nobody was dead, nobody with one leg or one arm, everybody came back. And all they did was whatever I told them to.” Suffering night terrors, high anxiety, and depression, Paul recently secured compensation for false denials of repeated disability claims. “I sued their asses and won,” Paul says. “And the money’s great but look at how long it took. Forty years for me to get what I should’ve already got. I’m over 70 years old. They already robbed me.” Almost 80 years after the GI Bill was rendered largely inaccessible for Black Veterans, the group continues to suffer due to institutional patterns of discrimination. As the demographic receives lesser treatment than white former service members, the figurative cracks in our society turn to fissures as they become more firmly integrated within our institutions. Despite the VA’s promise to right institutional wrongs, lasting effects have left the lives of Black Veterans at greater risk of debasement.

WHAT AMERICANS DON'T UNDERSTAND ABOUT RETIREMENT PLANNING
FINANCIAL KNOWLEDGE NEEDED
This lack of confidence is coupled with a lack of financial knowledge. Just over 1 in 4 respondents (26%) said they do not have a strong understanding of what to do when it comes to retirement planning, and over half (59%) do not have a 401(k) account, one of the primary savings vehicles for retirement. Of those who do, 21% are unsure of how much money is currently in their account.
Captured in the survey, which polled 2,000 working adults across generations this spring, was a strong desire to retire and openness to receiving professional advice, yet a general uncertainty about how to begin. Fortunately, online tools are becoming more widely available, and some provide important insights that can bridge the retirement planning gap.
ONLINE RETIREMENT INSIGHTS
the platform provides customers with a "Retirement Confidence" score and shows them the ways in which they are strong in their retirement preparedness as well as where they may need to adjust to get closer to their goal. Users can also access a retirement calculator to see just how much they need to save to achieve their individual vision for retirement.
A HUMAN TOUCH IN RETIREMENT PLANNING
By d-mars.com News Provider
Will I be able to retire? How much do I need to save? What if I outlive those savings? Questions like these are common across America's current working population. Whether Gen X, Millennial or Gen Z worker populations, they each have hopes for a financially secure retirement, despite
current economic uncertainty.
When it comes to retirement, research shows 70% of Americans plan to but are unsure they will really be able to, according to a recent Prudential survey. Having enough savings is a primary concern for almost half (40%) of Americans who are not confident they can retire. Concerns such as this may cause people to continue to work as they age - be it full time in their career or part time in a less demanding position.
If you feel anxious about retirement and are confused about where to start, you are not alone. The survey found that among those who expressed confusion about retirement planning or are worried about being behind, most (65%) said they are open and willing to use digital tools. Because of their convenience, digital tools may be a smart option for people looking to take the first step in their retirement planning journey, but they aren't one size fits all.
One free online option is Prudential Stages for Retirement, a platform that off ers a personalized digital experience with access to a team of financial advisors. By answering a few questions,
Even as online tools help bridge the retirement confidence gap, the survey shows that most people still want access to a financial advisor - even if they aren't physically in the room with them. A whopping 94% of all respondents say they are interested in receiving advice from a financial expert in some manner. On Prudential Stages for Retirement, people of all age ranges, levels of wealth and retirement preparedness have oneclick access to an advisor, virtually or inperson, if desired. There is no minimum savings required to access an advisor, so everyone can ask questions to help them gain more confidence in their retirement planning choices.
GETTING STARTED
While most working people across generations have retirement as a goal, many don't know what to do to plan appropriately. Online retirement planning tools like those from Prudential can be an effective first step in gaining knowledge and boosting confidence that retirement dreams will become reality.

HOW TEXAS STUDENT LOAN DEBT COMPARES TO OTHER STATES AS PAYMENTS RESUME
A Department of Education review concluded that nearly 64,000 Texans would have their student debt canceled after issues with income-driven repayment plans failed to move them closer to loan forgiveness goals.
THE NATIONAL PICTURE
Student debt, which includes federal and private loans, was $1.75 trillion dollars as of June 2023. Public university student debt made up 44% of the federal debt.
DEFAULTING & DELINQUENCY
If a student loan remains delinquent for 90 days, the loan servicer will report the default to the three major credit bureaus, which can impact the borrower's credit score and have far-reaching consequences.
The department reported no new direct loan borrowers entering default since March 2020, but experts expect that many borrowers will struggle once payments resume given the number of borrowers having a hard time before the pause.
MISSING PAYMENTS
The Biden administration has included a 12-month "on-ramp" period for borrowers who miss monthly payments. However, interest will continue to accrue during the grace period.

THE LONE STAR STATE SHINES: WHY TEXAS IS A PRIME DESTINATION FOR PROPERTY BUYERS
Although the real estate market can be unpredictable, certain states consistently exhibit promising potential for investment.
"Investing in real estate has long been considered a reliable avenue for building wealth," said Mike Qiu, owner of Good as Sold Homebuyers in Seattle. While the real estate market can be unpredictable, certain states have consistently demonstrated promising potential for real estate investment. In the next five years, several states are expected to offer lucrative opportunities due to factors such as population growth, economic prosperity and favorable policies.
consistent upward trend since at least the year 2000. Even during national market downturns, any dip in Texas is short-lived, as the value quickly rebounds. This provides property owners with significant appreciation potential for their investments.
Secondly, Texas experiences perpetual population growth. Severino reveals that over half a million people migrate to Texas annually, while the number of individuals leaving the state is considerably lower. As a result, Texas consistently sees positive net population growth through domestic migration, numbering in the hundreds of thousands each year.

ountless individuals have amassed their fortunes by investing in a single property, and you have the opportunity to do the same. However, it's crucial to consider the significance of location when selecting a state for your real estate ventures.
Over the next five years, several states are expected to provide lucrative opportunities due to factors such as population growth, economic prosperity, and favorable policies. If you're searching for a starting point in your journey towards real estate wealth, the following five states should be your top choices:
This sustained demand for housing ensures the stability of property values. Lastly, the Lone Star State boasts landlord-friendly laws. Compared to other states, Texas offers greater protection for property owners, a more expedited eviction process, and laws that generally favor landlords in tenant disputes. These factors provide property owners with a sense of security, knowing that their investments are safeguarded to a greater extent than in other states.
Additionally, these favorable laws contribute to the ease of managing and profiting from a property portfolio. In conclusion, if you're looking to embark on a journey towards real estate wealth, considering the opportunities in Texas is a wise choice. With rising property values, constant population growth, and favorable landlord laws, Texas offers a conducive environment for building wealth through real estate investments.
EXPLORING THE LUCRATIVE OPPORTUNITIES IN TEXAS RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT
By d-mars.com News Provider
Texas: Mark Severino, the owner of Best Texas House Buyers, openly expresses his preference for investing in his home state and substantiates it with concrete evidence. Severino cites three reasons why Texas outshines other states in terms of property investment and wealth creation over the next five years. Firstly, property values in Texas are continuously on the rise. Severino states that the median price of existing single-family homes in Texas has shown a single-family real estate. The report reveals that between April 2022 and March 2023, international investors contributed over $4.3 billion to the Texas real estate market, equivalent to nearly 10,000 homes. These figures represent 2.8% of the total number of homes sold in the state during that period and 3.6% of the total dollar volume of residential sales. The report also reveals that the median price paid by investors for
homes was $320,800, which is lower than the state's median price of $342,000.
In other words, while the majority of investors purchased homes priced at or below the state's median price, there was a subset of investors who bought significantly more expensive homes. As a result, the average purchase price for international investors totaled $446,100, which pushed up the overall dollar volume per purchase.
Interestingly, 49% of these investors chose to make cash purchases, indicating their ability to buy properties without relying on traditional mortgages. Additionally, the report showed that 61% of international buyers were already residing in the U.S. on visas. Marcus Phipps, the 2023 Chairman of the Texas Realtors, commented on the popularity of Texas among international buyers, citing the state's strong economy, diverse population, and high quality of life as attractive factors.
According to a nationwide report from the National Association of Realtors, Texas ranked third among U.S. states in terms of international homebuying activity, with 11.7% of all international buyers purchasing residential properties in the state. Florida took the lead with 23%, followed by California with 12.2%.
When it comes to the countries of origin for foreign homebuyers in Texas, Mexico held the highest share at 41%, while China, India, Nigeria, and Venezuela also demonstrated significant interest in the Texas real estate market, with 8%, 7%, 5%, and 5% respectively.

5 BEST-OFF-THE-RADAR ITALIAN DESTINATIONS
By d-mars.com News Provider
Dreaming of an amazing European vacation? Perhaps a scenic Italian locale featured in TV shows like "White Lotus"? You're not alone. Demand for top Italian destinations is high. With pent-up demand, rising costs and crowded venues, it's not easy to plan visits to hot spots like Amalfi. Fortunately, Italy boasts many less-traveled roads leading to off-the-radar spots well worth exploring.
To help you find the greatest towns you've never heard of, Steve Perillo, president and third-generation owner of America's leading travel company to Italy, Perillo Tours, has you covered.
Here are Perillo's top recommendations for your next Italian itinerary:
ENJOY THE AMALFI COAST VIBE IN MINORI
While the town of Amalfi is one of the most famous tourism locations, there's plenty of charm in other towns along the coast that are far less expensive and booked up. For example, while Minori is just a mile from Amalfi, it offers a pretty downtown area, gorgeous scenery and truly delicious pasta. Make sure to visit the Villa Romana e Antiquarium - an archaeological site and museum of an ancient Roman villa, then enjoy a scenic promenade along the harbor.
RELISH THE RELAXED, QUIET PACE OF PRAIANO
Perched on the rocky cliffs of the Amalfi Coast is the charming fishing village of Praiano. Just 15 minutes from the famous town of Positano, Praiano is the perfect spot for a slower, quieter respite. Praiano boasts a public beach, the Marina di Praia, plus small fashion boutiques for a leisurely day of shopping. Want an adventure? Hop on a ferry for a 25-minute ride to the gorgeous Isle of Capri, or enjoy some windsurfing or kayaking.
GET OUT YOUR CAMERA FOR A VISIT TO RAVELLO
The clifftop town of Ravello is known for some of the best views of the Mediterranean Sea along the Amalfi Coast, plus outstanding hiking. The town was decreed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, with beautiful architecture in buildings like the Villa Cimbrone and the Villa Ruffolo. The long history of the town is fascinating, from its 5th-century founding through becoming a coveted vacation spot for actors and celebrities including Greta Garbo, Humphrey Bogart and Jacqueline Kennedy.
DISCOVER THE BAROQUE BEAUTY OF LECCE
Until recently, Puglia was southern Italy's best-kept-secret destination, but it is becoming increasingly popular. Considered the cultural capital of Puglia, the town of Lecce is best known for its Baroque style buildings, churches, palaces and museums. The striking architecture of Lecce has earned it the nickname "The Florence of the South."
LOVE PASTA? YOU'LL LOVE ALBEROBELLO
Also in Puglia, Alberobello is famous for fairy-tale-like 14th-century white-washed conical-roofed houses called "Trulli," which are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bring your appetite, as the town is also renowned for its long tradition of pasta making. The "Quartiere delle Orecchiette" (Orecchiette district) is lined with women seated outside their homes making orecchiette (little ears) and cavatelli (small shells) pasta by hand, a culinary tradition passed down through generations.
If you're set on an Italian getaway, you may be surprised to find popular destinations already fully booked through the summer. The good news? The best way to find hotels at relatively affordable rates is by booking guided tours. Since many tour operators pre-negotiate hotel rates years in advance, tour group pricing has not seen the dramatic price hikes found across other parts of the travel industry - and rooms are already pre-reserved for these groups.
Perillo Tours, the leader in Italian travel for over 75 years, offers nine core Italy itineraries ranging from 14 days exploring Rome, Sorrento, Florence, Venice and Milan, to 9 days in Rome and the Amalfi Coast, providing an ideal balance of sightseeing, free time and activities. A 13-day guided program in Spain, an 11-day Greece itinerary and three Hawaiian itineraries are also available to satisfy your wanderlust.
All 2023 departure dates and pricing are now available for booking at PerilloTours. com. Or for independent travelers wanting to design a customized vacation to meet your individual needs, visit ItalyVacations.com for a helpful planning guide.

VEGAN MAC & CHEESE
By d-mars.com News Provider
Abeloved dish that no true Southerner can go without is macaroni and cheese. This cheesy delight graces our tables at various gatherings, from potlucks to barbecues to Thanksgiving feasts. Every family has their own unique twist on this Southern classic, and we have shared countless recipes for mac and cheese.
Some prefer a breadcrumb and herb topping, while others get creative with additions like Cajun seasoning or ham. We thought we had seen it all when it came to mac and cheese, but Tabitha Brown's version is truly one-of-a-kind.
Tabitha Brown, a native of North Carolina, embraced a vegan lifestyle in 2017. Since then, she has discovered innovative ways to adapt her favorite Southern dishes to suit her plant-based diet. One of her beloved creations is vegan mac and cheese. Brown describes it as comforting and delicious comfort food.
INGREDIENTS
• 4 cups of peeled, seeded, and chopped butternut squash (from 1 small squash weighing approximately 1 ½ pounds)
• 3 cups of peeled and chopped russet potato (from 1 large potato weighing about 12 ounces) - 1 tablespoon of garlic-herb seasoning blend
• 2 teaspoons of kosher salt, divided
• 1 cup of vegetable broth, divided
• 8 ounces of uncooked elbow macaroni - ¼ cup of unsalted dairy-free butter alternative (such as Miyoko's Creamery) - ½ cup of plain unsweetened dairy-free yogurt alternative (such as GT's CocoYo)
• 1 tablespoon of nutritional yeast - ½ teaspoon of garlic powder –
• 1 cup of shredded vegan mozzarella cheese (such as Daiya Mozzarella Style Shreds, from 1 8-ounce package)
• 2 cups of shredded vegan Cheddar cheese (such as Daiya Cheddar Style Shreds, from 1 8-ounce package), divided - ½ teaspoon of black pepper - ½ teaspoon of paprika (optional)
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F with the rack positioned 6 inches from the heat source.
2. Place the butternut squash and potato in a large stockpot and add enough water to cover them by 1 inch. Add the garlic-herb seasoning blend and 1 teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook undisturbed until the squash and potato are tender when pierced with a knife, which takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Drain the vegetables and transfer them to a blender. Add ½ cup of vegetable broth. Secure the lid on the blender and remove the center piece to allow steam to escape. Place a clean towel over the opening. Process until the mixture is
completely smooth, which will take approximately 1 to 2 minutes.
3. In a separate large stockpot, bring salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to the package directions. Drain the pasta and set it aside.
4. Melt the dairy-free butter in a large broiler-safe, ovenproof skillet over medium-low heat. Add the blended squash mixture, dairy-free yogurt, nutritional yeast, and garlic powder. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Add the vegan mozzarella and 1 cup of vegan Cheddar. Cook, stirring constantly, until the cheeses melt and the mixture becomes smooth and creamy, which takes about 2 minutes. Stir in the remaining 1 teaspoon of salt, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, and ½ cup of vegetable broth. Add the drained pasta and stir until it is evenly coated. Sprinkle the pasta mixture with the remaining 1 cup of vegan Cheddar and paprika, if desired.
5. Cover the skillet with aluminum foil and bake it in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Then, increase the oven temperature to broil and cook until the cheese is melted and bubbling around the edges, which takes about 3 minutes.
