ixteen years ago, when Atlanta was hosting the Summer Olympics, God spoke to me in such a clear, precise and clairvoyant voice. He said, “Not everyone has normal children, but I promise you all will touch the world.” On November 21, 1996, she entered the world, an 8lb 6oz, beauty, Essence Mone’. 10 toes, 10 fingers, a head full of beautiful hair and a very boisterous cry…she was perfect. At two months old, however, I started to notice she was not meeting age appropriate mild stones. I had a three year old daughter already and knew Essence should be much further along in her development. Around 5 months, I was convinced she was deaf, but that was not the vehicle God would use for us to touch the world. Eight years passed, in and out of the hospital, not knowing anything other than she was developmentally delayed. What was a young mother

Cont. A Mother’s Story: When My The Power of Positive SelfLove Wasn’t Enough For Autism Talk for Kids With Autism to do? I loved all I could, but my love was not providing her with the resources she needed to prosper. Her quality of life diminished drastically, everyday. Selfinfliction of pain, erratic hand movements, rocking, unable to form a sentence and furthermore, she was still wearing diapers. Finally, a diagnosis of Autism, gut-wrenching for a young mother to accept, however, it had not become too heavy to bear. I remembered God’s promise as He so graciously prepared me in the summer of 1996. What would I do? Who could I lean on for help? Suddenly, the reality of this disorder came collapsing in on me when I realized her condition was not as cut and dry as I hoped. The autism spectrum unfortunately had over 300 disorders and she wasn’t falling on the side that proved favorable. Because of the many other medical concerns she had up to this point, she was already so severely cognitively delayed doctors said she would probably not ever talk or have anything that resembled a “normal” life. Devastated by this news, I cried many nights as I watched my baby climb the walls in agony, attempting to communicate with her actions because her words wouldn’t escape her mouth. My love wasn’t enough and I became angry and bitter. I had one child who was normal, why did God chose me for this assignment? He promised we would touch the world, but I couldn’t imagine how that would ever come to pass. November 2010, after careful research and drastic sacrifice, I moved my three children to Houston, TX. I packed up everything and moved from the place where I was comfortable and comforted. I left my home, my job and my family. What was I thinking? Besides, seemingly, I just started doing research in

September. For sure I couldn’t just pack up and leave by November. I was blamed for making rash and emotional decisions. What my family and friends didn’t understand was, this decision had taken much longer than three months, and this was thirteen years in the making. God’s promises were unfolding right before my eyes. January 2011 was the worst month of our lives. Essence’s behaviors were in full force. She was having manic, psychotic episodes daily. She was literally tearing her skin from her body, ripping her hair out, biting thru her clothes, crying, kicking and screaming nonstop every day. With a heavy and defeated heart, and inconsolable tears, I attempted to end her life. I felt so guilty and even though I remembered what God said, this particular day unlike any other time, I didn’t believe Him. How were we going to touch the world? I knew only God possessed the power to heal her like He had so many other times in His word but it was not happening for us and I couldn’t understand why. I had not considered

what this move would do to her; I thought I was being obedient. Not to mention, I had transformed physically by losing over 100lbs. I never considered what all this change would do to a child with autism. Two days later on January 16, 2011 I received a call that Essence had been accepted in a program with a current eleven year waiting list, God saw fit for Essence to be accepted within 2 months. So, even though my love wasn’t enough to cure her disorder, it was enough to make extreme sacrifices, and now, we are all doing well. This experience has caused me to write a book and develop a platform for motivational speaking which is touching the world, as God promised in 1996.

hat type of messages do you t h i n k are going on inside your child’s mind? Children with special needs such as Autism will intuitively grasp that they are different and pick up on the less than positive judgments from others - however subtle they may be. Do you pay attention to that voice inside your head? I am not talking about auditory hallucinations here. I am referring to the things we say to ourselves everyday. That continuous chatter of our inner dialogues that typically never stops unless we actively meditate. Experts tell us that we are constantly talking to ourselves, using between 150 and 300 words a minute to be exact. We plan what needs to be done next or we review things that just happened. Most of this self-talk is harmless yet some of it is detrimental to our self-worth. “That was so stupid of me.” or “I will never be popular... thin, smart, pretty, etc.” You know what I am talking about. We battle with this every day. Having some negative self-talk from time to time is to be expected but it is important to be mindful about how often we do this so that it doesn’t become our default mode. Unfortunately, these malicious little voices can be even more powerful than positive affirmations because we often find them easier to accept. Each pessimistic thought or word is a negative affirmation and has the capacity to do a lot of damage if allowed to continue. Self-fulfilling prophecies are built from the thoughts that run inside our heads so repeating positive messages makes better sense if we want to create optimistic possibilities. We will begin to accept whatever our conscious

mind comes to believe, it’s that simple. But turning off the negative isn’t really that simple to do and if it isn’t easy for us as adults think of how difficult it is for our children. Solution: Teach kids positive affirmations at an early age. Regardless of your child’s challenges and abilities - ALL children will benefit from learning to listen to the positive voices inside their heads and if they don’t have many, we need to help them develop some. The more we help our children focus on positive self-talk the more it will minimize the self-blame and doubt that sprouts from paying too much attention to the negative. As adults we can prevent them from creating a broken record of negative self-talk that gets in the way of progress. We can give our children a jumpstart by teaching them positive affirmations while they are young, setting the stage for good habits to take hold. For those of you who saw the movie, The Help, there is a powerful example of helping a child develop positive affirmations when Aibileen, a third generation housemaid, who has helped raise seventeen children, teaches Mae, the little girl currently in her care, to repeat the words, “I am smart, I am kind, I am important.” When we encourage our kids to speak and believe such statements instead of “I can’t... “ or “I should...” etc we are giving them the best gift there is to help them reach their full potential and experience success in life. In order to get these statements to soak deep into their subconscious mind we can also write these affirmations down and post them in places that our

child is apt to run into on a daily basis. The bathroom mirror, their bedside table, the refrigerator, the TV or computer screen and their lunchbox are all good examples of where to place affirmations. Depending on where your child is on the Autism spectrum, he or she may be more visual and think in pictures. Therefore, find visual pictures that represent the affirmation you want them to absorb and cut them out. Have them look for pictures of what is important to them or what they are good at (or want to be good at). You can then use these photographs and pictures to make a vision board with your child. This is a great tool to create a positive atmosphere in a child’s bedroom, a place where they can refer to it often. Doing this activity together will not only enhance your connection to your child but it will also give you insight into their likes and dislikes, their passions and interests. They sooner we can help our children to acquire a habit of dismissing the negative dialogue inside their heads and replacing it with positive and affirming self-talk, the sooner our children will be on the road to maximizing their potential. It is a well-known fact that maintaining good thoughts about one’s self creates a mindset conducive to growth and an attitude and spirit that is ripe for blossoming. Maybe It’s Not Autism? By: Adam Cox

M

ost would agree that p u b l i c awareness and access to medical information is critical to public health. Destigmatizing mental illness and focusing attention on underdiagnosed problems has been a particularly important stride of the past 30 years. Yet sometimes, publicity leads to anxiety. As an acquaintance said, “If the disease-of-the-week doesn’t kill me, the worry will.” Recently, a parent contacted me with concerns about his 7 yearold son, who was quiet, introverted, and highly focused on a few hobbies. “Could he be autistic?” he asked. While the boy did not meet the diagnostic criteria for autism, or an autism- spectrum disorder, his father was voicing a concern psychologists and pediatricians are hearing more commonly these days. News of the nation’s autism

epidemic is everywhere. On a recent drive, I noted almost as many “AutismAwareness” auto decals as those saying, “Support Our Troops.” Don’t get me wrong— I’m glad that there is increased public awareness about autism and there is indeed cause for concern. In some states, there are several times more children being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders than just a decade ago. Asperger’s Syndrome (sometimes known as high-functioning autism) seems to be particularly prevalent, with estimates of its occurrence ranging from 1 in every 166 to 500 births. Although there are several theories as to why we are seeing such an epidemic, as of yet, no single theory has achieved scientific consensus among researchers. Lack of social communication skills is a core trait of all types of autism. However, I wonder if we are too quick to assign communication problems

such serious diagnostic labels. A brief checklist of the communication problems common to boys included on my website and in my recent book Boys of Few Words: Raising Our Sons to Communicate and Connect may help you decide if your son is simply struggling with the kinds of expressive challenges found among many different types of boys. By all means have your child professionally evaluated if you have serious concerns. But make sure the professional you visit understands the psychology of boys, and can tell the difference between a syndrome like high-functioning autism and something more manageable, like a nonverbal learning disability. More than once, I have encountered a child who seemed locked in his own thoughts, unwilling or unable to join the social world around him. But not every case was an autism-spectrum disorder-

-a thorough evaluation can reveal a wide range of potential causes for lack of social interest and communication skills. The good news is that with time, relationship, and strategic encouragement, the great majority of kids can learn to connect with others, and even enjoy it! Finding the key that unlocks a child’s mind and heart requires patience and a steadfast belief in the power of your own love and concern. And of course, one practical expression of that concern is to strive to get an accurate assessment of the challenges your child faces, so your interventions will help. I believe the autism epidemic is real and deserves the analysis of the country’s best medical minds. Children who have autism or a related

problem benefit from early professional diagnosis and intensive intervention. Yet I also believe that the constant buzz about autism has led to many of us being hypersensitized about whether our child “has it.” Just as an energetic 5 yearold may be misconstrued as hyperactive, a stoic 7 year-old may be thought of as having some variant of autism. Yet stoic boys are no more a new phenomenon than energetic pre-schoolers. As our world changes, so do our expectations of children. The problem is people take longer to change and evolve than society. That difference in tempo should not be the reason for a neurological diagnosis. It’s a little like getting mad at a computer that doesn’t run fast enough to operate new software. The computer is running as fast as it can – as

fast as it was made to do – yet software is evolving too quickly for the computer’s capabilities. For more information about autism and Asperger’s syndrome, you might want to contact The Autism Society of America, The National Institute of Mental Health, or check my website’s Resources section for links to these and other organizations that can provide more information about Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and other child development concerns. If you have questions about a child, please seek qualified professional advice. Help begins with accurate diagnosis and early intervention. About The Author Adam J. Empathy For Kids: Show Them You Understand By Adina Soclof

E

mpathy is one of the best techniques that you can use when communicating with your children. In my classes I encourage parents and caretakers to learn how to deliver empathy to their children. Why? Because being empathetic with your kids helps them see you really care about them and respect their feelings. Once they feel your respect and your love you will see more cooperation and less power struggles. So, how does this work? How can regular parents learn how to empathetic with their children? Here are 2 things you need to know in order to be empathetic with your kids: 1. Get inside your child’s head: The definition of empathy is the ability to identify and understand another person’s feelings or difficulties. It is hard for adults to identify with children and see the world through their eyes. Many of us have forgotten how tough it is to be a kid. We don’t take our kids problems seriously because they seem so trivial compared to our own. The next time your child is crying because their favorite shirt is in

the wash, try to imagine how you would feel if you had an important business meeting and all your clean shirts were at the dry cleaners. Relating to all your child’s problems in this way helps you gain insight and perspective. You will then be able to say sincerely, “Your favorite shirt is in the wash! You must be so disappointed. I know you were looking forward to wearing it.” 2. Kids talk in code: When a child is angry they will not say, “I am mad!” They do not have the emotional intelligence to recognize and verbalize their feelings. Instead they will say, “You are so stupid!” or “I hate you!” This is very hard for us parents to hear and we will jump in and admonish our child, “How dare you speak to me that way!” Instead of rushing to reprimand our kids,

we should take a minute to translate what they are saying. “You are the worst mother ever!” really means, “I get really frustrated when I want to do something and you don’t let me. Even though I know it is probably because you love me and you know what is best for me, it just makes me so angry!” Once you understand your child’s language you might find yourself being empathetic and saying, “It is hard not to be your own boss; you would really like to make your own decisions as to when you go to bed. When you are 18 you will be allowed to be your own boss.” The skill of empathy can be used in so many different ways. It is an excellent way to help us avoid conflict and to promote a strong and loving relationship with

Holistic Treatment Center: Combat The Psychological Effects Of Child Abuse By Anna J. Stuart

I

ntentional or unintentional, child abuse has a great impact on the physical as well as physiological health of a child. This distressing event can happen anywhere like at homes, schools, organizations ethnic or cultural groups. Physical harms involve lifelong health problems along with cognitive difficulties. When you talk about emotional effects, it results in low selfesteem, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, difficulties in managing relationships and even personality disorder. Here the role of depression treatment center comes into picture. Don’t ignore the signs of child abuse. It’s no less than a crime. A relevant treatment center can rescue the sufferer from the pangs of depression and anxiety.

How to find out whether a person is in a state of depression? As per medical experts, the most common symptoms are when the feelings of negativity, anxiety, agitation and anger are overpowering rest of the emotions. If a child is losing his interest in everyday’s activities, immediately report to a reputed depression or holistic treatment center. This treatment approach takes emotional, spiritual and physical health into account. Synthetic medication always carries the risk of side-effects, but holistic healing can help to live a better life without any harm. It’s a lifelong commitment to the physical health and mental well-being. It is important to mention that child abuse is

not all about broken bones and unexplained bruises. If a kid is frequently getting hurt, his anxiety level gets elevated. It can even give rise to drug abuse. It should not be taken lightly. Anxiety is a natural human reaction. But, it can be a threat to the psychological well-being of a person. A child suffering from anxiety disorder can experience emotional irritability in the slightest of uncomfortable condition. Professional care services of anxiety treatment center can provide an emotionally, physically or sexually abused child a life that he deserves. You can contribute your bit by finding out the best anxiety or holistic treatment center in your vicinity. It has been seen that sometimes parents continuously neglect or fail to accomplish the child’s

basic needs including emotional attention, care, affection and appreciation. Don’t push him to live your dreams. This condition also falls under child abuse. It can cause various personality changes in a child such as becoming insecure with low selfesteem. The reliable depression treatment center can certainly help you to minimize the physiological as well as psychological effects of child abuse.

They have adopted natural ways to heal the pain and overcome anxiety attacks and enable the child to live a stress-free life. Child abuse leaves lasting scars. An unfortunate event of life can damage a child’s sense of self and his ability to have healthy relationships. Sometimes it can result into bipolar disorder. If any child is suffering from this distressing disorder, look no further than

Features to Look for in Protective Sports Eyewear By Allison Pinnell

P

rotective sports eye wear has come a long way over the years. Once viewed as a necessity only for those who required a prescription, modern sports eyewear is designed to enhance eye safety as well as improve vision. In fact, sports goggles can now be fitted with both prescription and clear plastic lenses, making their safety features available to everyone. Durability Whether you require prescription or nonprescription eyewear, you want to choose a lens that is both impact and scratch resistant. f With the use of strong polycarbonates, the lenses in sports goggles can withstand even the y o umost physical of sports. In sports like racquet ball, balls can travel in excess of 200 miles per hour. Polycarbonate lenses are designed to withstand this impact, as well as to protect you from fingers, elbows, and flying debris. Polycarbonate has the additional benefit of being UV resistant. If the sport you play takes place outside during the day, these lenses will protect your eyes from sun damage without dimming your vision the way sunglasses would; allowing you to enjoy enhanced safety, improved vision, and protection from environmental factors. Fit and Intention There are hundreds of options to choose from when it comes to sports eyewear, but not every option is ideally suited to every sport. Your eye doctor will be able to show you frames that are specifically designed to protect your eyes in the sport that you play. For example, protective sports eyewear designed for basketball are not shaped to fit inside of

Six Ways to Keep Your Children Safe in Youth Sports By Brandy Zickefoose

O a helmet, but sports goggles intended for use in sports like football will be shaped and fitted in a way that allows them to easily and comfortably fit in between helmet padding. Picking protective sports eyewear from a sporting goods store may seem like a less expensive and more convenient way to get the protection your eyes

need. However, only your ophthalmologist can make sure the fit of your eyewear is ideal to the shape, size, and contours of your head. To maximize comfort and ensure against slippage, sports eyewear should only be purchased through an experienced sports eyewear doctor. Additionally, the materials used in sports eyewear purchased from

your eye doctor is often times more durable, helping to ensure against accidental breakage. With an estimated 40,000 sports-related eye injuries treated in the U.S. each year, the necessity of protective sports eyewear is becoming obvious. No matter what sport you play, your eye doctor can help you choose a frame that is durable, intended

ver 3.5 million youth sports injuries occur each year, yet the majority of these incidents can be easily prevented by taking precautionary steps. Here are six tips on how to help children avoid injuries while participating in any youth sports program: • Monitor daily/ weekly activity to avoid overuse - Each year, as many as half of all youth sports injuries are the result of overuse. Overuse injury, which happens over time from repeated motion (such as throwing a baseball too many times), is completely preventable by implementing variety, moderation and rest during practices and games. Bones and muscles are still under development in children, and overuse leads to 1.25 million injuries that require medical treatment annually. • Stretch Properly - Warm-up exercises, such as stretching and light jogging, can help minimize the hazard of strain and soft tissue injury. Stretching prepares the muscles for physical activity and allows blood to flow through them. Once a game or practice is complete, cooling down exercises loosen the body’s muscles that may have tightened during the exercise. Encourage both “warm-ups” and “cooldowns.” • Don’t play through pain or injuries - Respecting the healing process and your body’s wishes is absolutely essential. When there are aches and pains, it’s your body’s way of telling you to slow down. Playing through pain greatly increases the risk of further injury and extends the recovery time. • Use proper footwear - Approximately 1 million ankle injuries occur each year, and 85 percent of them are sprains. In addition to stretching

properly, the shoes an athlete wears can make a world of difference in preventing sprains or other ankle and foot injuries. Most studies suggest that wearing tightly-laced, high-topped shoes is most beneficial. • Stay hydrated Children produce more heat during exercise than adults, yet they actually sweat less - which increases the risk of dehydration. Dehydration can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke, cramps, etc. Young athletes need to drink plenty of water before games and practices as well as during them. Make sure your child takes frequent water breaks. • No matter what the sport, wear a mouth guard – Mouth guards are effective in the prevention of minor injuries to the teeth, lips, tongue, face and jaw. Furthermore, mouth guards can help prevent serious injuries to the brain (concussions) and roots and bone that hold the teeth in place. If you need convincing, consider this - in 1962, mouth guards became a requirement for high school and college football. Consequently, the percentage of mouth injuries dropped by over 50 percent annually. How to Deal with Cancer By Alex White

I

t is not an easy thing to have to listen to a doctor say those dreaded words “you have cancer.” You may feel confused, angry and helpless. Cancer shakes the very foundations of your mental strength and stamina as much as it devastates your physical health. It is easy to feel out of control and lose a grip on things. The most important thing for a patient to have is a strong support network of friends and family to help him or her get through this physically and emotionally devastating time. There are certain things that you can do to help yourself cope better once you have been diagnosed with cancer. Learn as much as possible about your condition. You must become an expert on your specific condition. This will help you understand what is going on in your body and to have intelligent discussions with your doctors. You will be able to ask them the right questions and ensure that you are getting the kind of care that is required. The Internet is a treasure trove of

information and it can be used to the fullest possible extent. Else you can drop into the library and peruse medical books. Even your doctor may be able recommend some books that may help you understand what you are dealing with. A support team is the most important asset that you will have through the battle with cancer. These people who care about you will be more than willing to chip in at your time of need. If you are able to build a list of all the things that need to be done while you are indisposed, you can match them against people who are willing to do that bit of work for you. For example you may request the help of a friendly neighbor to babysit while you go for the doctor’s appointment. The support team is not just about people who can give you a hand with day to day chores, but they should also include people whom you can call any time of the day or night and who will help lift your spirits. Cancer is a tough opponent. The patient needs to fight it with

all his might. Even with all the technological advancements of the world, we have not been able to find a cure for this deadly disease. There is no magic pill to pop for the malignant cells to vanish overnight. The fight is prolonged and overwhelming; the patient has to have great mental fortitude and a strong support network to overcome this disease. About The Author Alex White is a free lance writer and a health & fitness expert who has been associated with several health care providers across various specialties. Through his articles, Alex wishes to inform and educate public about cancer specialists which will benefit those who are looking for resourceful information regarding health.

Three Self-Awareness Activities To Transform Your Imperfections By Laura M. Turner, M.Sc. CNHP

R

ecently, I was reading the 7 Secrets For Successful Living By Marianne Paraday when a thought struck me. In the book, Parady gives her annotations on the works of Transcendentalist author and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson and my thoughts spawned from his words noted in her writing: “Every man in his lifetime needs to thank his faults. Our strength grows out of our weakness.” Parady writes at length about giving up our need for perfection and it got me thinking: How much our lives could be enriched if we could simply give up our quest to be perfect! After all, who defines the perfect house, income, body, relationship? If we let it, this quest could cause one to log endless amounts of time on what we’re not, don’t have and so on. What’s more, what if we could actually transform imperfections and literally “grow our strength” directly from them? In many of my other articles on self-awareness, I encourage readers to focus on the positive parts of themselves and let them expand. Yet, what to do with the imperfections? Here are three ideas: One: Practice Total Self-Acceptance When undertaking the quest of full self-realization, take responsibility for the total you. Yes, we all have parts of our lives that we don’t envision for ourselves, but we must continue to accept them. It is always important to take full responsibility for who we are in this moment (warts and all). The word “forgiveness” comes to mind. What it means to truly seek forgiveness of ourselves requires, in my opinion, awareness and acceptance of what is. Remember the statement: It is what it is? It certainly applies here. Yes, we can seek to change what we do

“Every man in his lifetime

needs to thank his faults. Our strength grows out of our weakness.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

not desire, but first we must embrace it - take off the proverbial Band-Aid and let it heal from the inside out. Two: Be Aware of Emotional Hide and Seek With this in mind, it is very easy to hide, cover up, and aim to sweep away what ails us. It’s not always as large as an eating disorder or other pathology, for instance. It could be the day-to-day struggle of a strained relationship, addiction or financial instability. I’m convinced (through experience, sadly) what we continue to stuff and put away will not stop growing. In fact, when not identified, trouble often manifests itself in a larger way, later. I like to remind myself that it’s easier to deal with problems when they are small. Even when they are huge, it is easier to first break them down into bite-sized pieces and take baby-steps toward solving them. For example, a friend of mine actively worked to quit smoking after his heart-attack. One day he just stopped and told himself, “I can always have a cigarette. I think I’ll wait ‘til later.” He told himself this from minute to minute as the urges struck him. After a day he said, “Oh, no problem, I can have a cigarette tomorrow!” When tomorrow came, he continued this dialogue in his head until he’d strung 10 years together. He told me, “I tried not to look too far ahead; I tried to stay in the day.” Thee: Use Your Active Imagination It is often a healthy practice to write a dialogue

to a nagging imperfection and see what it wants. When I write a fictional story, for example, I literally get out pad and pen and create a dialogue with my character to talk to him/ her. My aim is to decide what the story is that he wants to tell. I often use this same technique when dealing with a less than perfect part of myself. Give this a try: First identify the imperfection, and then give it an identity by “talking” to it on paper. Find out what it wants, then find a way to fulfill its need and make peace with it. Finally, say goodbye and let go. In Conclusion True, it’s uncomfortable to go into the places that scare us. Yet, the reality is, our lives are the productions of our choices, unconscious or conscious. Isn’t it worth our time to carefully consider each step? Moreover, instead of stuffing, why not continue to “grow your strength” from the obstacles that lie before you: we could all do worse than to let go of our need to be perfect and seek only our own highest truth. If nothing more remember the words of Emerson himself: “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.” For More Great Health & Wellness Information: Click Here! ***** Laura M. Condoms and STD Safety By Roberto Sedycias You may not realize it, but a condom could actually preserve your life. Statistics show that Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are a widespread problem throughout the world. In the United States alone, approximately 12 million people are affected by STDs yearly. The cold hard facts are that there are serious problems caused by STDs, and anyone who is sexually active or who plans to be sexually active needs to understand about things such as the use of condoms and STD safety. There are many health problems associated with STDs that people may not know about. For instance, women may develop cervical cancer as an effect of an STD. The ability for a woman to get pregnant may also be diminished or lost altogether because sterility is often caused by STDs. If a woman with an STD does get pregnant, tubal pregnancies are common, and these have

been known to be fatal to the unborn child and to the pregnant woman. Babies born to infected women may have severe damage or even die because of effects of these diseases. The brain, kidneys, and heart may be damaged in a person who has an STD. STDs such as the HIV virus can cause death to the infected individuals. STDs are very serious and should be taken seriously by everyone. The surest way to not contract an STD is abstinence, but for many people, that is not a choice they prefer. Having a monogamous relationship where the couple has no other partners and they do not have an STD is another way to prevent the problem. While condom use is not 100% safe, it can greatly reduce the risk of becoming infected by an STD, including the AIDS virus. Condoms and STD safety go hand in hand. While condoms are also used as

a method of birth control, other methods of birth control such as the pill are not effective in reducing the risk of STDs. This is because a condom presents a physical barrier to the transfer of bodily fluids from one person to another. These bodily fluids can carry the germs that transmit STDs, and without the barrier of a condom, can easily pass from one partner to the other. Even if your partner appears to be healthy, if they have been intimate with infected people or have shared needles with a person who was infected with an STD they could still be a carrier. If you are not 100% sure of your partner, you should use condoms. While no condoms are 100% effective, those designed to help prevent disease can greatly reduce the risk of passing along this type of infection. STD Testing – Getting Answers Without Anyone Knowing By Abigail Aaronson

STD

testing is critical if you suspect you have a sexually transmitted disease. It does not have to be public information, though. STD testing is something you need to do. If you believe there is a chance that you could have a sexually transmitted disease, then it is understood that you should have proper testing. This is the only way to know if you have something to worry about or not. It is also the best way to find out what you need to do to overcome this situation if you are suffering from it. The bottom line is that with treatment, your life can be healthy and long in most cases. Without knowing, you never will have the ability to stay in control of your life. There is No Risk It used to be that you had to visit your local doctor to get a form test for the diseases to determine if you had one of them. STD testing has come a long way, though. Now, all you need to do is make the decision to find out. Look at some of the benefits of the more modern test methods for this particular type of disease set. • You do not have to tell anyone. You do not have to have a doctor that is part of your health insurance. You do not have to report the claims as such. You do not have to tell anyone, unless you want to. • Your privacy in the facility is the most important factor. Some of the best facilities ensure you are able to remain private during the entire process. That way, you do not have to be seen in the wrong place. • The information provided is accurate. It can take some diseases time to show up, but you get fast and accurate information that you can rely on through this type of test. You can act on this

information and remain confident. • Some of the best providers will actually handle the testing onsite for

you. This just furthers your privacy in that the samples never have to leave the laboratory. • You find out what

you can do about it, too. If you do test positive for one of the conditions tested for, the facility will provide you with guidance on what to do to overcome it. Your onsite doctor is able to give you advice and guidance on what the next step is. STD testing is a delicate subject. It is no one’s business but your own, either. The good news is doctors and test facilities know this. They will not violate your trust by providing any information to others that you are coming in for this type of test. The good news is, though, you can get the answers you need to know what the outcome will be for you. You can then take the treatment process the route you wish to, or you can feel that sense of relief that you are safe. Do not overlook how easy and effective this type of solution can be for you and for your future. Ways To Keep Yourself Safe From Sexually Transmitted Diseases By Roberto Sedycias

U

nfortunately, there are many sexually t r a n s m it t e d diseases that can lead to fatal consequences. However, with the proper precautions, these diseases can be avoided and you can enjoy a healthier and longer life. The most surefire way to prevent getting a sexually transmitted disease is to just abstain forever. But that is not a realistic solution and not one that many people would prefer. So, instead, it is better to try to practice safe sex to keep yourself protected from sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, syphilis, AIDS, and herpes. You are susceptible to any number of these diseases if you are not practicing safe sex, and once you have the disease, you are then at risk of passing it along to anyone with whom you come into physical sexual contact with as well as unborn children, if you are a woman. Usually these diseases are passed from bodily fluids, just as AIDS, and so when you have intercourse, the exchanged fluids can transfer to the body and can infect the other person. Often, it is a hit or miss ordeal and someone may or may not contract it from the other person, though rigorous testing must be performed to determine it. One way to protect yourself is with a condom, though that is a tentative solution with many risks. Though a condom does serve as a preventive measure in the exchange of bodily fluids, it can still break or tear during intercourse and then spread AIDS or other diseases regardless. A condom is only somewhat effective against some diseases and really not a protective measure against most. However, if you know that you have a sexually transmitted disease and you are going to have sex with someone, it is important to wear a condom or to encourage

your partner to wear one. Another thing to do is to be open about the disease that you have before you have intercourse and, if you do not have a disease, to find out if your partner does. You need to be cautious before you have sex and that might mean both of you getting tested before you decide to share your bodies. You can both get tested for an array of diseases and infections and then once you have the results you will have a better idea of the risks and know how to proceed. If your partner refuses to take a test, then you need to take more precautions and ask about your partner’s sexual history and whether or not any of his partners might have had a sexually transmitted disease. Really, the safest thing is for both of you to get tested beforehand. It is essential that you try to practice safe sex because sexually transmitted diseases can cause pelvic inflammatory diseases as well as infertility and ectopic pregnancies. You may also be at risk for experiencing serious discomfort and painful infection in the form of genital warts and other painful rashes that can occur with herpes. Cervical cancer is also a risk for many people. You will be at risk for genital mycoplasma infections, Chlamydia infections, and a number of other bacteria related ordeals. The good news is, if you happen to get a sexually transmitted disease, most of them can be treated effectively in the early stages and you will be all right again after a round of antibiotics. But that means you need to get tested regularly because symptoms do not readily present themselves. Source: Free Articles from ArticlesFactory.com

Developing A Good Workout Routine For Overall Fitness By David Sharp

E

xercise is a critical component of energy balance, and developing a good workout routine paves the way to overall fitness. Along with a healthy weight and nutritious diet, exercise plays an essential role in general health and well-being. People who have been sedentary for a while, due to illness or laziness, should begin a suitable fitness program and learn to exercise properly. Whether they are trying to lose excess pounds, increase their energy levels or improve their physical fitness, a few simple tips can help them develop a plan they can live with. Workout routines can be performed any time of day. Some people prefer early morning workouts, while others exercise during their lunch breaks. Evening workouts are best for those who have more energy

later in the day. While a small, pre-workout snack can provide extra energy, people should avoid exercise immediately following a meal. This gives the body time to focus on digestion and avoid stomach upset and discomfort. A solid warm-up is an essential part of any exercise program. Slow, gentle stretches and brisk walking warms the muscles and increases body temperature to prevent injury during a workout. A ten-minute warm-up before exercise is a good rule of thumb. The best fitness programs include three major types of exercise: flexibility movements, aerobic activity and strength training. Stretching, range-of-motion and other flexibility exercises should be done every day. Good for the muscles, bones and joints, they are ideal choices for pre-workout warm-ups. Flexibility exercises

release tension, promote relaxation and get the body moving. Yoga and tai chi are examples of popular flexibility exercises that many people incorporate into their exercise plans. Aerobic activities are anything that get the heart pumping and blood flowing. Also known as cardiovascular exercises, aerobic activities use the body’s large muscles in a continuous, rhythmic motion. Not only do they improve heart and lung health, but they also strengthen bones and muscles, control weight, improve sleep and reduce stress. Walking, jogging, bicycling, swimming, tennis and dancing are common aerobic activities.

Most fitness organizations and agencies recommend 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise on five or more days a week. Those who are just beginning a fitness program should start slowly and gradually increase their exercise intensity and duration. Strength training, or resistance training, is another important component of a good workout routine. Strength training builds muscle and reduces joint stress. It can be done with free weights, weight machines, resistance bands and other exercise equipment. It is a good idea to include isometric and isotonic exercises in a strength training program. Strengthening exercises

should be done every other day, after an adequate warm-up period. As with aerobic exercises, people who are new to strength training should start slowly. They can add additional weights and repetitions as their fitness levels improve. A proper cool-down after a workout is just as important as a good warmup before exercise. A postworkout cool-down gives the body time to recover gradually and well. A short walk and slow stretches are important cool-down activities. Exercise depletes the body of important fluids, so it is important to keep those levels up during a workout. Water is the best option, but people who exercise for 30 minutes

or more can benefit from sports drinks that replenish their water and electrolyte stores. Most people who follow these simple exercise tips find that their workout routines quickly become habits. The longer they stick with the program, the quicker they can achieve weight loss and fitness success. Our mission here at 7 minute workout is to change people’s lives for the better! Exercising only 7 minutes a day 3 times a week is not only enough but ideal and see how our team is making thousands of dollars a month whilst getting in the best shape of their lives here at DavidSharp-Online. com/7-minute-workout

Are Allergies Controlling You? ---5 Steps To Relief By Debbie Davis

I

f the beginning of spring feels like the beginning of the end for you, there are millions of others in the U. S. alone who suffer from allergies triggered by pollen. And grass and weed pollens can continue allergy season through December in many warmer climates. Here are 5 things you can do right now to help you get your life back. Close The Windows--This may seem contrary to what people usually say about letting in fresh air. But if you are allergic, letting in the air while pollination is happening can be disastrous. Instead, close the windows in your home and your car, and circulate the air rather than exchanging it. Some spores will still get in on hair, packages, pets, and through doors as you come and go, but the amount will be far less than if you leave windows open.

Have The Ducts Cleaned---Heating and air conditioning ducts can collect all kinds of particles which can get blown into your home or office when you cut on the heat or air conditioning. Not only can they be a collecting place for dust, and other particles, but with the right conditions mold can grow inside as well. Investing in having the ducts cleaned will be well worth the health problems that you may be able to avoid. Vacuum With A HEPA---Vacuuming and cleaning surfaces with a damp cloth or mop are far better than sweeping. These methods minimize the amount of particles that go back into the air. However, the best type of vacuum (HEPA) is one with a filter that can minimize the particles that get blown back into your air.

Encase Bedding With Dust Mite Covers--The protein in dust mite excrement is one of the most potent indoor allergens known. And unfortunately, mites are common to indoor spaces regardless of how clean you keep your home. The best way to reduce their population is to prevent them from hiding in the dark, moist bedding and feeding on dead skin flakes in your bed. These relatively inexpensive covers keep them out of mattresses and pillows. And since they are killed by sunlight, this is a very effective and natural way to control the problem. Fewer mites can often make it easier for you to sleep. A good night’s sleep gives your body a chance to rest and be ready to handle exposure to seasonal stuff more easily. Filter The Air---The right air cleaner can be your

ace in the home. Even after taking all of the precautions mentioned above, there are always going to be irritants in indoor air unless you take proactive steps to keep the levels low. A high efficiency particle arresting (HEPA) air cleaner is one of the safest and most effective filters to have working for you.

In order to be designated as such, it has to have shown that it can remove 99,997 out of every 10,000 airborne particulates that are .3 microns or greater in size. Having a cleaner with this type of technology working for you around the clock can really make your indoor space a haven,

and let you start enjoying life, regardless of what’s blooming outside. The Allergy Machine Air Purifier can filter your air 24 hours a day by removing seasonal pollen and chronic indoor allergens with HEPA filtration that is safe and effective. Send for it today at http://purerair.com/

Breathing For Perfect Health By Laura M. Turner, M.Sc. CNHP

D

id you know, how you breathe could affect your health? It’s true. In can also affect the success of your exercise program, your mood, blood pressure, even your quality of life. Consider this: As nursing infants we were born to inspire and expire through the nose. Prior to this, back in the comforting watery environment of the womb, mouth breathing wasn’t an option (Douillard, 2001, p. 147). How did we learn then to breathe through our mouth? Frankly, stress. When blood pressure rises, we involuntarily open our mouths to obtain large gulps of air. This stimulates the “fight or flight” response and we begin to panic. Is there a better way to breathe for perfect health, you ask? Read on to discover the answer. The Two Forms of

Breathing: Before we discuss how you can learn to breathe more efficiently, it’s best to note that there are two ways our body has become accustomed to breathing: in the chest/clavicle area and from the diaphragm. It makes sense that chest breathing is shallow and requires more work to supply oxygen to the body. Chest breathing requires a higher heart rate and when used alone, doesn’t efficiently engage the lower lobes of the lungs (where the oxygen is taken into the blood). This is easy to do. And, if we don’t know any better we may never graduate beyond shallow breathing. What’s the alternative? Enter the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a flat “parachute” muscle at the bottom of the lungs (Douillard, 2001, p. 148). It contracts as we inspire

drawing air into the lower portion of the lungs (more efficiently transferring oxygen to the blood). Too, it’s also in the lower lungs where carbon dioxide and other gasses are prepared for release. Give it a try: place your hand on your abdomen just below the ribcage. You should feel the diaphragm shrink as you inhale, expand as you exhale. Now alternate between mouth and nose breathing - can you tell which one more effectively engages the diaphragm? While thinking about changing your habits: consider the nose is created for breathing and the mouth for eating (except in extreme circumstances when the airway is obstructed, of course). If nose breathing is efficient, it engages both chest/ clavicle and diaphragm involuntarily getting them to work together in a

seamless system. The key is to make this happen both during exercise and at rest. Ever felt dizzy? Then you know what it’s like not to be breathing effectively. Mouth breathing allows too much oxygen to enter the system. This abundance of oxygen cannot be exchanged with carbon dioxide fast enough causing its build up in the blood. This can cause dizziness, even fainting. Benefits Of Nose Breathing: Why is the nose a more effective tool for breathing? Here’s just a few benefits: 1.) Nose breathing happens in a controlled environment allowing in only the correct amount of oxygen into the body at one time. 2.) The anatomy of the nose has ridges which create a stream of air perfect for oxygen exchange. 3.) Mucous membranes keep air warm or cold and moist, adapting to the body’s temperature in it’s environment. 4.) Cilia (tiny hairs) clean and filter the air to prevent the body from

disease and infection. 5.) New evidence suggests nasal passages produce nitric oxide. This not only kills bacteria and viruses but cancer cells. It is also thought to regulate blood pressure and boost immunity (Douillard, 2001, p. 163). 6.) Nose breathing increases the blood supply to cells, this coordinates the body by improving muscle balance. As a bonus: Easterners believe that the mind/ body connection cycle is completed by the breath. Used as a catalyst in meditation, breath-work is used as a signal to higher consciousness. Easterners also have noted that breathing engages a feeling of euphoria, engaging the chakra at the solar plexus, connecting mind and body. Sound good? Why not give it a try? Breathing Exercises: Here are some breathing exercises to help you retrain your body to intake oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide more effectively: First, take in three

19.

maximum breaths inhaling from mouth. Next take three maximum breaths through the nose and notice the difference. Now, inhale through the nose and exhale only through the nose. As you breathe contract stomach muscles and increase the size of breath with each inspiration. Breathe until you have reached your lungs full capacity. Try this both at rest then practice during your walking or exercise program. If you have a difficult time nasal breathing or want to stimulate an involuntary response, place one drop of Peppermint essential oil into the hands, then touch your upper lip just below the nose.

Alcohol Addiction Affects You As Well As Those Around You

Alcohol Intake Can Lead to Impotence

By Liliana Kaberone

By Kelly Kites

D

r i n k i n g d u r i n g pregna nc y? W h i l e prenatal alcohol exposure does not always result in Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) that is no reason to drink any amount of alcohol during pregnancy. There is no known safe level of alcohol consumption that a pregnant woman can consume. You owe it to yourself and your baby to seek alcohol rehab because as many as 12,000 infants are born each year with FAS. Nearly 14 million men and woman in the United States have a drinking problem. For these people alcohol rehab is an option that they cannot afford to overlook. Someone suffering from alcoholism is playing a very dangerous game with not only their life, but the lives of others. An alcoholic may also feel more anxious, depressed, tense, or confused. They seek relief by drinking more. Alcohol rehab helps to remove the need for drinking by helping you deal with these emotional issues without the use of alcohol. For those individuals with an alcohol addiction that drink heavily, alcohol rehab can help, but many people never find an alcohol rehab program soon enough. Because alcohol is legal and readily available to anyone, makes it difficult for some to think about it as ever being a problem. You may find that person making inappropriate remarks to friends, family, and coworkers, arguing, fighting, and other anti-social behaviors. The person in need of alcohol rehab would also probably never tolerate such behavior from others unless they were drinking. People who drink when pregnant should seriously think about getting into an alcohol rehab program.

Fetal alcohol syndrome is a lifelong and completely preventable set of physical, mental and neurobehavioral birth defects associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy. In fact, FAS is the leading known cause of mental retardation and birth defects. When you drink alcohol, so does your baby. It passes through the blood vessels in the placenta and then into the blood supply of the growing baby. That’s why it is so important for a woman that is pregnant and who can’t stop drinking, to get help from alcohol rehab. f you consume alcohol regularly then this article must be of your interest. It has been proved that excessive consumption of alcohol can result in erectile dysfunction in most of the men. Alcohol significantly slows down the normal functioning of your body. Many men experience sexual dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction, better known as impotence, is a common sexual disorder which can happen to men of any age. However, men who are above the age of 50 are more prone to suffer from it. This condition is characterized by the inability of a sexually aroused man to get or sustain an erection for a satisfactory sexual act. As a result, your mind is often gripped with a feeling of embarrassment, guilt and being less virile than others. This becomes the prime reason for causing friction between couples. There are very few men who prefer to come forward and talk openly about their problems. You can gradually start losing your self-confidence if you do not seek impotence treatment on time. There are various major reasons which can be attributed to the cause of impotence in men of all ages. Impotence can be caused either due to psychological reasons or physical reasons. The psychological reasons include anxiety, depression, guilt and conflict within the relationship. The physical reasons include diabetes, spinal injuries, smoking and intake of alcohol. Excessive consumption of alcohol can lead to impotence as it is known to slow down the body’s reflexes. If you drink too much then your body functions slow down to a large extent. As alcohol enters your body it has a huge impact on your nervous system and acts as a chemical depressant, which slows down the flow of blood to various parts of the body including the penile area.

Even if you are sexually aroused, you would find it difficult to get an erection if the penile area is deprived of blood. If the flow of blood to the penile muscle wall is restricted then automatically your sex organ becomes flaccid. There are many factors due to which a man becomes sexually stimulated such as working of brain, blood vessels and senses. However, alcohol hampers the working of all these factors. It surely has a negative impact on the way you perform in bed. There are various ways by which you can treat erectile dysfunction. To start with, you can cut down on your intake of alcohol. There are various medications available which can treat impotence effectively. Cialis is a popular impotence medication which helps you to regain your sexual confidence. It is also known as the ‘weekend pill’ as it is effective for up to 36 hours. The active ingredient of this medication is ‘tadalafil’ which inhibits the working of an enzyme PDE-5 and increases the flow of blood into the penile muscle. This pill gives you the freedom to have a spontaneous sexual encounter for the complete weekend. You can also treat impotence with the help of Viagra pills. It is the most commonly prescribed medication which should be taken approximately 30 to 60 minutes before indulging in a sexual act and its effects last for up to four hours. It was the first prescription medication launched for treating erectile dysfunction. You can buy this medication from any of the registered online clinics.

Reasons to Hire Senior Home Effective Alternative Care Services for Your Loved One Diabetes Treatment By Peter Mangiola

By Gail Lynn

n spite of their age and some physical limitations, many seniors still continue to live independently in their own homes provided that they receive some amount of senior home care services. These services may include personal care such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and meal preparation. It may also include housekeeping services a few days a week, and transportation to medical arrangements. Senior home care services may also include a higher level of care such as medical care or medication management. While family members do their best to provide any type of care for their senior loved ones, the demands of work and their own family often make it very difficult for them. And if they do try to provide senior home care services while caring for their own family and attending to their own work, often the senior care they provide is not up to the standard. This results in either the family caregiver or the senior loved one suffering from depression. This is where hiring the help of senior home care providers plays a vital role. These individuals are trained and qualified to guarantee the wellbeing, health, and safety of your senior loved one in the comfort of their homes as well as the peace of mind of his loving family members. Studies have proven that seniors who can maintain their independence in their own homes are less likely to suffer from depression than their counterparts who are relocated to nursing home facilities. They are generally more satisfied with their lives and have less health problems. With senior home care services, they are able to remain active and socially involved in spite of their age and some physical limitations. In addition, senior

home care services can be customized depending on the actual needs of the client. Care givers can either be hired through a care company or you can hire your private senior home care provider directly. Care companies typically have various types of personnel, including medical professionals who are qualified and certified to monitor nutrition, medications and physical functions whenever necessary. There are also companion services designed to improve a senior’s quality of life and provide help with grocery shopping and other errands. They can be hired either to provide daily senior care or periodic respite care to family caregivers. Aside from offering greater and more personalized services to seniors, senior home care services are also less expensive than a nursing facility. This makes it a great option not only for seniors, but also for their families who always want the best for them. However, some seniors are reluctant to receive any form of help, especially if it’s from someone outside of the family. Below are some of the important things you should know when talking to your senior loved one about senior home care services. Try your best to find the reason for his resistance. Your loved one’s resistance could be due to fear of not being able to perform simple jobs that used to be very easy or a serious untreated pain could be making things

very difficult for him. Perhaps it would be much easier for him to deny and lessen his problems than accept them. Or he could be devastated by the death of a loved one or upset for not being able to bond with his friends. Instead of accusing your senior loved one that he is no longer able to care for himself, express your concerns for him. Perhaps this can make him more open to you. Respect your senior loved ones’ independence and allow him to participate in the decision making process. If possible, allow him to make the final decision about the type of care he will receive. Offer your help by giving your ideas and suggestions. Enlist the help of others. If your loved one knows of someone who has hired senior home care services then allow him to talk to that person. By talking to someone with a positive experience with senior home care services, your loved one might be relieved from any type of fear. You can also arrange a meeting with his doctor or hire the help of a geriatric care manager. Hearing the opinion or suggestion of a third party sometimes can help your loved one understand that change is inevitable. Peter Mangiola is founder of Senior Helpers in home care Columbus NJ. Our Columbus NJ personal care services will provide you with as much care necessary for your loved ones to enjoy living independently at home.

illions of A merica ns suffer from diabetes, approximately 10 percent from type 1 and 90 some percent from type 2. While there is no cure for type 1 diabetes, alternative diabetes treatment for type 2 can be effective and swift, working to reduce symptoms in only a month or two. Diet, exercise, mineral supplements and herbs can all play a positive part in improving and even reversing the disease. People often develop type 2 diabetes by a combination of eating too much of the wrong kinds of foods and a sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise. When lifestyle changes are made, people with type 2 diabetes can successfully fight the disease. Diet Eating healthy and nutritious foods will help heal those with type 2 diabetes and aid in managing the disease for those with type 1. Balancing the proper amounts of carbohydrates, protein and fats in the diet will help diabetics lower and stabilize blood glucose levels. Switching to complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, non-starchy vegetables and legumes increases the amount of fiber in the diet and lessens the amount of glucose loosed into the blood as the food gets digested. Omega-3 rich fish such as salmon and mackerel and oil-rich nuts such as walnuts, almonds and pecans enhance the essential fatty acids necessary for health in diabetics. Avoiding white flour and sugar is equally necessary, though small amounts of fruit can and should be enjoyed by people with type 2. A good diet is the first step in an alternative protocol for type 2. Exercise A decisive next step in the alternative protocol

requires getting active, at least adding on a good walking session two to three times a week. More exercise is better than less, but any amount of additional exercise helps stabilize blood sugar levels and leads to easing symptoms of diabetes. Exercise and weight management can help prevent diabetes as well as treat the disease. Regular, moderate exercise sessions will likely help with weight problems as well as reducing cardiovascular risks and controlling blood glucose. Mineral Supplements The trace mineral chromium, found in foods such as liver, cheese, meats, vegetables and grains, can help reduce blood glucose levels for people with type 2 diabetes. While some chromium comes to individuals through a healthy diet, supplementing with 50 to 200 mcg chromium a day can help control diabetes. Magnesium supplementation can also help, as people with type 2 diabetes often show low levels of magnesium. Eating

foods rich in magnesium like green leafy vegetables, lentils, seeds and whole grains will provide both good dietary fiber and rich sources of magnesium for stabilizing blood sugar levels and improving insulin activity in the body. Herbs Cinnamon and American ginseng have both shown some effectiveness in alternative diabetes treatment. Using cinnamon in cooking, or drinking delicious cinnamon tea has a positive effect on blood glucose. Cinnamon capsules are available in health food stores, as are capsules of American ginseng. Studies of both have shown the herbs to be effective in improving blood sugar levels.
