Cigna Aims for Better Health for All Americans

By Valerie Jones Contributing Writer

I

t’s a simple concept: a healthy employee makes a happy employee. And healthy, happy employees create a more efficient workforce. For this reason, Cigna is making it their mission to create a healthier workforce in the United States. But what’s the best way to go about creating a culture that is health-conscious? How can knowledge be spread that can potentially change the way Americans look at their health and improve the health of employees and families? “As long as employees are performing at ‘status quo,’ employers won’t get the results needed to survive and thrive in today’s challenging environment,” said Mike Koehler, Cigna president and general manager for South Texas. “Employers need every individual performing at his or her full potential. And that can begin to happen through a focus on improved health. The fact is, when employees achieve their best health, organizations perform at their best – productivity is higher, costs are lower, and the potential for profitable growth is stronger.” Part of Cigna’s mission is to help the people it serves improve their health, well-being, and sense of security. By focusing on total health – mental as well as physical – Cigna aims to create a culture of wellness within every organization.

HEALTH ISSUES FACING AMERICANS A great number of Americans are plagued by serious health issues. Oftentimes, unhealthy behaviors or bad habits are passed down from generation to generation. An unhealthy population means an unhealthy workforce and an unhealthy workforce lays the foundation for all types of headaches for employers. For example, more than 8% of the population has diabetes, according to

the American Diabetes Association, with about one in four people older than the age of 60 living with diabetes. In 2010, almost two million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people aged 20 years and older. This condition affects the American population – young and old. Diabetes lends itself to other health issues as well, such as hypertension (high blood pressure), which affects about onethird of American adults. High blood pressure requires treatment and cannot be detected unless a health care provider checks a person’s blood pressure. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed some startling, yet telling statistics: 69% of people who have a first heart attack, 77% of people who have a first stroke, and 74% of people with chronic heart failure have high blood pressure. High blood pressure is also a major risk factor for kidney disease. Obesity, another medical condition, affects more than one-third of Americans, according to the CDC. Health problems related to obesity include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain forms of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death. The estimated annual medical cost associated with obesity was about $147 billion in 2008, higher than the cost for persons of normal weight. High cholesterol also puts people at risk for developing heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the U.S. Seventy-one million American adults have high cholesterol. While some risk factors for high cholesterol – gender, age, and family history – are uncontrollable, some risk factors are manageable – diet, weight, and physical activity.

is prevention. For this reason, Cigna has increased its focus on creating healthier employees through numerous preventive initiatives. “Health and wellness mean something different for each individual,” said Paula McHam, Community Involvement Lead for Cigna, South Texas. “Our goal is to provide each person the tools and support they need for their own personal journey to health. This impacts not just them, but their family, their employer and the community in which they live.” Healthier employees equate to less doctor visits and less time missed from work. This improves efficiency in the workplace and is less of a strain on employers. Many companies offer employees free gym use as part of their wellness programs. Just 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week can help a person maintain their weight. Regular physical activity can reduce the risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Employee wellness programs and better health habits can not only increase productivity, but every piece of information can be passed on from employees to their families, as can better health practices. This passing of information will foster a nation of healthier people, which will guarantee better total health for all Americans.

SUCCESSES IN HEALTH In recent years, Cigna has seen advancements and progress made in regards to health in several employers including the City of Houston, Port of Houston Authority, Harris Health and St. Luke’s Hospital System. Cigna covers 704,590 employees and family members in Houston alone. Cigna was able to implement a strategy to create a more health-conscious culture with City of Houston to reach the organization’s goals of improving health and managing disease, creating employee accountability and ownership of their health, and improving workforce productivity. Some of the top health risks for its employees were weight complications, diabetes, low back pain, and depression. Through the introduction of comprehensive wellness plans, as well as routine health assessments and biometric screenings, Cigna was able to help the City of Houston raise its preventive care utilization and dramatically reverse its medical cost trend. Similarly, the Port of Houston Authority was looking to create a corporate culture of increased health awareness when they teamed with Cigna. This resulted in

September 2013 the creation of educational communications and several wellness campaigns. Within one year, positive results were evident. The company has seen an 11% reduction in medical costs. Fittingly enough St. Luke’s Hospital System, purposed to take care of its patients, cares just as much about its employees. Cigna helped the company launch a health assessment campaign which identified unhealthy behaviors in employees. St. Luke’s found that offering a small incentive increased participation in the program and Cigna helped coordinate and build its wellness program. “Life has taught me that health is our most important asset,” said Tobin Hawkins, Regional Vice President – Texas Market Lead for Cigna Government and Education. “I have often heard people say that work, money, or family is the most important thing in their life. Yet without our health, we can't do any of those things with as much passion or effectiveness.”

Cigna encourages companies to determine the driving forces behind declining health and productivity and take a proactive approach to addressing those issues. Implementing strategies and wellness programs, offering biometric screenings and thorough health assessments are proven effective methods to create a healthier workforce and better health for all Americans.

Are Pedicures Safe?

By Dr. Julie Lester Contributing Writer

S

ummer has come to an end, and you still haven’t had a chance to visit that new spa you pass by every day. Between working, taking care of the house, making time for your spouse, and keeping the kids busy with summer camp, football practice, ballet classes, and soccer, you barely had time to pay attention to yourself. Getting a pedicure is a common way to “treat your feet.” Many salons and spas receive objection due to improper technique and lack of sterilization. The fact still remains that getting a pedicure or foot spa treatment can be a relaxing retreat. Whether you do it in the comfort of your own home, or prefer to visit a salon, following this list of do’s and don’ts will ensure your feet stay looking and feeling great.

Do’s

Don’ts

• If you are a diabetic or have poor circulation, consult your podiatrist first. He or she will likely customize a pedicure for you for optimal foot health. Due to the risk of infection, and increased healing rate seen in many diabetic patients, it is recommended that a medical professional cut your toenails for you. • Bring your own instruments with you to the salon, especially if you are unsure about their disinfecting practices. Bacteria and fungus can move easily from one person to the next if not properly sterilized. • After soaking in warm water, use a pumice stone or exfoliating scrub to remove dead skin build-up or rough, callused skin. • Cut toenails straight across with a toenail clipper. If you have a tendency to develop ingrown toenails, visit a podiatrist to prevent the development of infection. • Use a rubber cuticle pusher to gently push back cuticles. • Remove polish regularly with a nonacetone polish remover, if your toenails are healthy.

• Avoid shaving your legs before a pedicure. Small nicks and cuts on the legs can give bacteria a portal of entry. • Because bacteria and fungus can be transferred so easily, use a different set of tools if you plan on getting a pedicure and a manicure at the same visit. • Do not allow the salon to use razors to remove dead skin from the soles of your feet. If not used properly, it could cause serious injury, and result in infection if too much skin is removed. • Don’t share emery boards. They are highly porous, and can easily trap bacteria and fungus. Furthermore, wooden products cannot be sterilized, and should only be used once. • Do not round the corners of your nails to avoid ingrown toenails. • Do not cut your cuticles!!! Your cuticles protect against bacteria and prevent infection. Also, constantly pushing them back can cause them to grow thicker. • If your toenails are thick and discolored, this could be a sign of a fungal infection. In this case, you should not use nail polish to “cover up” the prob-

lem. Polish does not allow the nail to breathe. Your podiatrist can offer treatment options, and help manage the appearance of the nails. There are also special nail polishes available that are safe for fungal nails. • Do not use sharp objects to clean under the toenails. This can lead to puncture wounds and possible infection. • Do not leave moisture between the toes. This can lead to the build-up of bacteria and fungus, causing athlete’s foot. When choosing a nail salon, it is important to be particular. First, make sure the salon’s license is posted on the wall, as well as the licenses of the individual nail technicians. Also, glance around the salon for signs of uncleanliness. If you notice dust, debris, or nail clippings on the floor and in corners, it could be a sign that your salon may not be as dedicated to sanitation as it should be. Your technician should wash the footbath with hot, soapy water and spray with a disinfectant after each use. Instruments should also be disinfected after each use, preferably with an autoclave machine. If you feel as though a salon is in violation of your sate’s laws, you can file a complaint with the state cosmetology licensing board. For a list of contacts, visit www.NICTesting.org.

What Are The Steps That An Allergist Takes To Help You?

Teaching Compassion for Those Who are Different

By Judy Blake Contributing Writer

By Laura Lee In case you have experienced a sudden allergic reaction and are not certain of what caused it, you could be diagnosed with a food allergy and an allergist is the one that you should go to for getting tests done to learn what foods to which you're allergic. This is very critical for avoiding sudden allergic reactions that could be awfully painful and sometimes could result in death if left untreated. How can one be allergic to some food they've been eating since childhood? Lots of folks may develop allergies to particular kind of foods later on in life; they might have enjoyed the same food in the past with no reaction. Food allergies are difficult to detect. There isn't any hard and fast manner at which you can get tested for the various kinds of foods you might be consuming. An allergist is the person who will run several tests to discover the foods you might be allergic to. Approach an allergist even if it's a mild response; you never know it could be a hazard to your life later on. An allergist initially asks you to keep a food diary jotting down the foods that you have eaten along with the quantity taken; the patient is requested to note down the names of medications if taken and if at all you have experienced any allergic symptoms after ingesting them. This will assist the allergist in narrowing down the possible foods you may be allergic to. This also helps to determine if you're allergic to the medicine you are on and not food as suspected. If an allergic reaction occurs as soon as you have taken a medicine or eaten a

unique food, you'll have the capacity to identify that this is what causes the symptoms. The food diary along with the results of other tests conducted will provide a complete image of the things you might be allergic to. What are the other ways of testing to discover which foods are causing allergies? The most usual evaluation conducted is the skin test; a tiny part of the suspected allergen is put on the skin and is pricked with a needle to let the food or any further allergen to seep under the skin. In the event you develop hives or swelling it denotes that you are allergic to this specific allergen. The other test that an allergist does is to try the elimination diet; if you know of some foods that may be causing the allergies; you will undoubtedly be asked to abstain from those foods for some time. Following this period you will be asked to add the exact same foods one by one and check for symptoms; this is going to help you determine which foods trigger an allergy in you. There is one more test done to find out what foods you may be allergic to and that's the blood test. The drawn blood sample is sent to a lab for testing and they're going to examine the blood for allergy type pathogens and analyze your blood against specific foods to know which of them the perpetrator is. Are these systems sure of giving 100% exact results? Sadly none of the above methods give guaranteed results; the allergists typically use a combination of different methods of testing to get a complete and an exact picture depicting your food habits and which of the foods are causing the allergic reaction.

o matter how old your child is, most kids want to be accepted by their peers. They want to have friends to eat lunch with, be invited over for play dates and have someone to talk to during school. In many ways, kids are just like adults. Most parents want to have their share of friends, be invited out and feel like a part of their community. But what do you do when you’re out with your children and you see someone acting differently? Do you assume that your child would never act like this? Do you believe the parent is doing something wrong? Do you go so far as to tell your child that something is wrong with “those people” and we shouldn’t associate with them? After all, they look normal. Why could this be happening? This is where the problem begins! We make judgments based on what we think we know and then in turn, pass those judgments onto our children. We think we’re setting a good example and want our children to follow in our footsteps. Sadly, this is not always the case and we are actually passing judgment when we really don’t have all of the information. I am the mother of two boys with hidden disabilities. Now 22 and 18, my kids have had more than their share of strange looks, rude remarks and feeling isolated. Between the two of them, my children cope with Autism, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety, Attention-Deficit Disorder, Tourette syndrome and impulsive disorder. It is most certainly a complex mixture of issues to manage. One of the reasons it is so complicated is because the behaviors manifested from these disorders are so unusual. Living in a society where people judge by what they see, we can’t see the disorders my children have and the criticism is born. Regardless of the age, appropriate social skills are critical to being accepted. For

people with Autism, they have difficulty verbalizing their thoughts and being a part of the group. They want to fit in but often don’t know how. They can lack the ability to read body language and pick up on social clues and their peers do not want to be around them. A child who has Tourette syndrome may exhibit verbal or physical tics causing the other kids to be scared or confused. A child who is anxious for no apparent reason or obsesses over minute issues is perceived as strange. For the child who appears so happy and then all of a sudden seems so sad, this is puzzling to those around them. Education begins in the home. As parents, you have so many teachable moments, and teaching tolerance and compassion is one of them. Rather than shun the person who is different, try to explain to your child that the affected person may be having a stressful time and can’t help themselves. Rather than criticize the parent, explain how some children have to be managed differently because the child has difficulty managing their emotions. You can’t see why the child is different; you just know that they are. If you and your family are blessed with good health, be very grateful. This could change at any moment and someone you love might now be the person with special needs. Wouldn’t you want your child’s peers to be understanding? Wouldn’t you want the members of your community to be more tolerant? My children are gifts to this world. They are sweet, care about the well being of others and can be trusted. These are qualities we want all children to possess. While they have other qualities that prevent them from fitting in as easily as most children, this doesn’t make them any less special or less deserving to get the most out of life possible. Judy Blake is the author of Judy’s World – The World of Autism through the Eyes of a Mother. Her story chronicles her life and that of her boys. Giving speeches for 10 years, she travels throughout the country and speaks to audiences of all ages. African American Healthy: The Vitamin D3 and Cancers

By Richard W. Walker, Jr. Contributing Writer

I

n the last article we discussed the relationship of vitamin D3 deficiency and cancers. In order to appreciate this better we need to understand what cancer is.

What is Cancer?

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. It can arise from any type of cell in any organ. Whether caused by random error, inherited abnormality, or environmental factors called carcinogens, when the genetic information, or DNA, of a cell is damaged, that damage can produce mutations in the cell. If the mutated cell begins to reproduce itself without restriction, those abnormal cells often form a mass, or tumor, that may be cancerous. The formation of a tumor, however, does not necessarily mean cancer. All tumors are not cancerous, though the words tumor and cancer are often used synony-

mously. When discussing tumors, the two most important terms to understand are malignant and benign. If a tumor is benign, it is not cancerous. This kind of tumor generally does not spread and, most of the time, does not return once removed. One example of a common benign tumor is uterine fibroids, which are small growths in the uterus. Malignant tumors, on the other hand, are cancerous. They have the potential to invade other tissues and spread throughout the body through a process called metastasis. While most cancers are marked by the presence of a tumor, some, such as leukemia, are not. The answer to the above question is a great unknown but there are some answers and we are beginning to get closer to some definitive ones. However, there are certain known multiple, contributing factors. In simplified form, the potential for cancer exists in your body as long as its cells are thriving and dividing, which is basically as long as you’re alive. Imperfect cells that can cause cancer usually arise because of damage from free radicals. Free radicles are unstable particles in the body caused by the normal activity of cells but are significantly increased when the cells are stressed. The stress to cells come from many different sources, smoking, alcohol, stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition and the intake of toxins from food, water

and air. They are created by exposure to environmental factors called carcinogens, such as cigarette smoke and asbestos. Free radicals can sometimes injure a gene in the cell’s DNA called the p53 gene, turning it off and thereby allowing cancers to flourish. This gene is the cells protective gene as it is responsible for allowing every cell in the body to have self-recognition. That is, this gene is responsible for each cell knowing what it is supposed to look like and do. If, in its development, the cell begins to develop abnormally the p53 gene causes that cell to self-destruct thus, preventing abnormal cells, which could potentially be cancerous, from growing. When this gene is adversely affected by an increase in free radicles, it is unable to allow the cell to perform self-recognition. Therefore, an abnormal cell-line may continue to grow and develop. The onset of the disease has also been linked to genetic predisposition and even certain viruses. While some causes of cancer seem beyond our control, some can definitely be avoided by reducing the ongoing toxic exposures to our bodies.

Vitamin D3 and Cancer As mentioned in the last article, the vitamin D3 benefit is that every cell in the body has been recognized to have a vitamin D3 receptor on the cell membrane. This means every cell in our body is affected by this vitamin. The benefit here is

that vitamin D3 helps to activate the p53 gene. Additionally, vitamin D3 has an effect in assisting all cells to stick to one another. It has been observed that when cells loosely adhere to one another rather to firmly adhere to one another they lose some of their ability to fight off cancer development. Vitamin D3 increases all cells ability to adhere. There are at least 17 cancers know to be affected positively by adequate vitamin D3 levels. The most significant ones have already been mentioned except for cancer of the colon. With adequate vitamin D3 levels, not only will the frequency of the disease decrease in the colon, but the survival will increase by 75%. The most important thing to realize about vitamin D3 and cancer is that although this vitamin can help protect you, it can be overpowered by bad habits and a bad environment. So, eliminate smoking, reduce alcohol intake, and get good sleep. As much as possible switch to organic foods, eliminate air fresheners in the home, use non-toxic household cleaners, minimize the consumption of water in plastic bottles and never heat up food in Styrofoam. Finally, don’t forget to ask your doctor to test you for vitamin D3 levels written as 25 (OH) D3. (Excerpts taken from African American Healthy, by Richard Walker, MD Square One Publishes, NY.)

Caring for Your Elderly Parents

By Sterling Carter, DPT, MS, CSCS Contributing Writer

Y

our mom and dad used to take care of you. Now suddenly, they are the ones who need help.

Ideally, we all want our parents to be able to make their own decisions and control their own living environments. However, sometimes the struggle for independence can compromise health and safety. When this happens, it is important to know how to address your parent's needs. First, you must recognize that your elderly parent may stubbornly refuse any help you offer. They may even deny they have a problem. Do not take this personally. Instead, try to understand their feelings. Perhaps your parent worries that their autonomy is being threatened. It is common for an older person to resist any assistance that makes them feel they are losing privacy, dignity or independence. The worst thing you can do when encouraging your parent to seek help or change their lifestyle is to make them feel powerless. Instead, keep the following suggestions in mind:

• Allow them to remain in control as much as possible. Your mission should be keeping them healthy and safe, not micro-managing their life. Give options, not ultimatums. • Change takes time. Help by making the smallest changes possible that still provide the desired benefit. Don't try to overhaul your parent's life all at once. • Express your own feelings. By sharing your emotions and fears with your parent, you can approach necessary lifestyle changes as a team, not adversaries. When possible, give your parents the tools that will help them maintain independence or even help each other. For instance, an occupational therapist may be able to help your parents maintain or regain the strength necessary to perform some daily tasks. If they can stay active, they'll be able function better, which will make you both happier. Until Next Month, Thanks from Dr. Sterling Carter, PT, MS, CSCS Sterling Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation www.sterlingtherapy.com 281-240-3140

A Gluten Free Diet For Autism, ADD And ADHD By Erin McKenzie

T

he most recent research showing that a gluten-free diet could be linked to improvements in behavior for children with autism was conducted by Penn State University. This is the latest in a string of recent studies which show that a gluten-free diet may aid children on the autism spectrum. Other research studies also support the idea that removing gluten from the diet may also be effective in other behavioral disorders such as ADD and ADHD. Gluten is a protein found in wheat. It is also in barley and rye. This meaning eliminating it from your child's diet means no more bread, crackers, cookies, cereal or pasta. In addition, there are many prepackaged or processed food items that contain gluten. Some of these foods come as a surprise when people start checking for gluten on the ingredients list. This includes some brands of hot dogs and lunch meats, and many salad dressings. A gluten free diet is an elimination diet that must be followed strictly in order to be effective. Studies have shown that children on the spectrum who eat just a small amount of gluten once a month show less behavioral improvement than those who eat off-plan only once or twice a year. Many doctors are hesitant to prescribe this diet for autistic children, because of the drastic lifestyle change it requires. In

fact, many families simply cannot stick to the diet. In addition, a 2009 review of research into the diet did not prove that it was effective. Since that time, though, several large-scale studies have shown that there is promise in the elimination diet. In fact, the Penn State study looked at more than 400 children, and showed a reduction in hyperactivity, improvement in eye contact, improvement in speech skills and a reduction in temper tantrums for those who followed the diet closely for six months or more. While a glutenfree diet seems to be linked to improvements in these children, none of the studies have yet found a definitive reason why. In addition, it may not be for everyone. Not all children who follow the diet closely show behavioral improvements. Some of these children do benefit physically, however. Almost half of all children with autism also have gastrointestinal disease, food allergies or chronic digestive issues. Even if their behavior doesn't change, they may simply feel better without the hard-to-digest gluten in their system. Since children diagnosed with autism

spectrum disorders are often known as picky eaters anyway, eliminating gluten can be especially difficult. In addition to possibly having to eliminate some of their favorite foods, removing gluten from the diet usually means not purchasing processed foods and foregoing visits to favorite restaurants. Like any specialty diet, planning for a gluten-free diet takes longer than eating regularly. Your trips to the grocery store will take longer at first, while you read packages and determine what products are safe to feed your child and what aren't. At the same time, removing many processed foods means that preparing for meals may take longer as well. This may seem like a lot of time to devote, but if it means that your child's social skills grow and develop, then it will be worth it. In order to keep your child from feeling left out, you may want to put everyone in your household on a gluten-free diet. Some families find other siblings follow along readily while others reject the diet. It is a personal decision you will have to make for your family, based on your per-

sonalities and what is convenient for you. If you, your spouse or other children do not follow the diet, you will be required to purchase and prepare separate meals for the child with autism and for the rest of the family. Because this diet leads to improvement only when followed strictly, it is good to also be aware of cross-contamination. This is especially true if you or other children in the home are still eating foods that contain gluten. Even using the same serving spoon, toaster or cutting board can contaminate your child's food with enough gluten to trigger a reaction in their body. Perhaps the most important part of seeing if a gluten-free diet will be effective for a child with an autism spectrum disorder, ADD or ADHD is to be patient. The Penn State study showed that some children show improvements within a week or two. Some progress more slowly, taking several months to show behavioral changes. In some cases, these improvements aren't even spotted by parents. Instead, they are noticed by a doctor or therapist who is professionally trained and only sees the child occasionally. It can take four to six months for all of the previously eaten gluten to be gone from your child's body, so you should stick to the diet strictly for at least six months before deciding it doesn't work for your child.

The Top Ten Reasons the Majority of People Are Bored and Unfulfilled By Dennis Simsek

H

ave you perfected the part of you that puts on a happy face for people so they don't realize how unhappy you are? Have you resigned yourself to the idea that, even though you want so much more in your life -- better friendships, increased energy, time for yourself and your family -- you will never feel completely fulfilled? You need to realize that, although you may feel like you have reached the point of 'no return' and have no will-power to follow through with anything, you actually haven't. You have the ability and the will to create the changes you want in your life and to start today. You are not alone in your struggle. Millions of people are trudging through their lives, tiredly going through the motions and not really experiencing the beauty of life. What is going on with our society that causes so many to feel lost, unfulfilled, and worthless? Let's look at a few reasons: 1) You feel lost and like you have nothing in your life to work towards -- Do you have a project that you are currently working on that makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning? If not, you need to find one. Maybe think of the wonderful feeling you will have when you

lose those extra pounds you have packed on, or finish that kitchen project you have been putting off. Maybe you have an idea for a side project at work that will bring in some extra income. Whatever it may be, you need to target something that you can do to make your days a bit more worthwhile -- like the saying goes, 'If you aren't growing, you're dying'. 2) You watch too much television -One of the best things you can do for yourself is to get rid of your TV. It will give you time to read, research things that interest you online, and spend more time with your kids. When your workday is over, re-condition yourself to think about more options rather than mindlessly sitting in front of the TV. Engage in your life and get doing things you wouldn't normally do -- no excuses. 3) Your diet is terrible -- time to be honest with yourself, how much time are you putting in to preparing healthy meals for yourself and your family? How conscious are you of what chemicals and preservatives you are consuming daily with overprocessed, unhealthy foods? There is so much evidence out there now that connects a healthy diet with fresh greens to your metabolism and brain chemistry, which directly correlates to your energy levels and mood. You need to take the time to prepare fresh foods and it is

a great time to start buying locally grown produce -- help local farmers and businesses prosper. 4) You play the victim on a daily basis -- this is a pretty common one that we are all guilty of at some time or another. Think about this -- when you get into a deep conversation with others how often does it go into how many things are wrong with your life? How about discussing things that are right in your life instead? We all have so much to be grateful for and so many blessings, we need to be conscious of these things rather than the negatives, the 'first-world problems' that we may have. You also need to surround yourself with positive people that bring out the good in you, in essence end any toxic relationships you may have while you are at it. 5) You believe that this is your identity; you can't and won't change it -- You feel like you can't teach old dogs new tricks. Really??? The truth is, you can teach anyone anything as long as they are willing to learn and to try new things. You need to be fed up with how things are going in your life enough to push through that old attitude and realize that you are not stuck and that you can make a change. Gain whatever inspiration you require to feel like you can make a difference in your life. Feeling anxious and depressed is NOT your identity if you don't want it to be. 6) You stay away from everything that you fear -- you need to listen to that little voice in your head that whispers to you to 'do it' when facing your fears. When you do, you will realize that it is not even close to as bad as you imagined it would be. It is the most exhilarating feeling when you can accomplish something you were always afraid of doing. You don't want to look back on your life with regret because of some ridiculous fears holding you back -- they will seem silly when you are on your deathbed, won't they? They are silly now too. I guarantee it. 7) You believe that you don't deserve happiness -- for whatever reason, you don't feel like you are entitled to one of the most basic rights of humans -- to find happiness. Write down a list of things that make you feel happy and content. It could be a big thing like going to an amusement park with your kids or as simple as a bubble bath. Self-care is something that we rarely do these days because we are too

'busy'. Try to do something that makes you happy every day. You deserve it, truly. 8) You haven't realized what potential you have to make a change -- Steve Jobs once said something along the lines of, "Do you want to change the world? Or do you want to spend your life selling sugared water?" I don't much like sugared water, so I think I will try to change the world, how about you? You can do anything you set your mind to. Nothing has happened in this world without a single person and an idea. You don't have to do anything huge like inventing a clean power source, but look around you. You have the power to change your world, and the ones of the people closest to you. You just need to give yourself a chance. 9) You reject help -- you think that asking for help is a sign of weakness. As a matter of fact, asking for help takes an incredible amount of strength and courage. You also need to remember that what goes around comes around, you will get a chance to add fulfillment to your life by giving back where help was given to you once. If you are stuck in an aspect of your life, ask for help from someone who has been there. You could even contact a professional. Life is too short to waste on being too proud to ask for help. 10) You spend too much time trying to improve on things that don't matter -- ever heard the saying, "we major in minor things?" It is true. When I was going through my toughest times I would try to master different ways of scoring goals on FIFA with my Xbox. Now I think to myself, 'what a waste of time!' If I had only spent those hours on a tennis court perfecting my serve -- you might be watching me play on television right now instead of reading this post! In all seriousness, we as a society are too caught up with the pursuit of wealth and good looks and possessions. See where your time is being spent and make changes that your future self will thank you for mentally, physically, and spiritually. You need to improve on the things in life that matter, where you will find the deepest fulfillment and rewards. Look into improving yourself -- that will make all the difference. The Benefits of Optimism in Recovery By Mike Writes

T

here are lots of implications regarding the impact of optimism on substance abuse and treatment. One apparent implication is that a positive expectancy about the future can have an effect on a person’s current well-being. Furthermore, a positive point-of-view is associated with high stress management ability, and this characteristic lends itself to both resilience to addictive substances and sustaining sobriety. Those who persist with an optimistic approach are more prone to engage in strategies that enhance their ability to manage stress. Individuals with welldeveloped stress management methods are less likely to succumb to the pressures of stress, which in turn makes them less vulnerable to drug dependency. Therefore, we can conclude that dispositional optimism may help to facilitate a proper recovery as well as decrease vulnerability to addictive substances.

Hope for the Future Expectancies about the future can impact current mood and manners. There has been prevailing evidence that validates this contention. There are two consequences of this statement. A metaanalysis of published papers show that optimistic attitudes about the future lead to an bolstered effort to obtain ideal goals, while pessimistic attitudes lead to disengagement and giving up on desired goals. So an optimistic individual is more likely to secure desired outcomes because their perceptions and coping strategies affect goal striving behavior. Pessimism howCHCP-0057_D-Mars Ad for SW Campus.pdf

ever, achieves the opposite effect. It is even achievable to deduce a change in behavior as it relates to optimism. If a person is engaged in negative functioning, a positive perception about the gift to change could be considered a goal in itself. The connection to addiction and recovery is apparent. If addiction is maladaptive functioning, and change in behavior is the objective, then an addicted person’s optimism about the future can help them to transition from abusing substances to clarity. In this way optimism facilitates motivation. If one feels hopeful in their ability to change, it is more likely that they will in fact change. The converse (pessimism), would view change as an unattainable goal which prevents both attitudinal and behavioral adjustments. Motivation is in turn subdued. It should be highlighted that these relationships apply to both external and internal stressors. From this it seems clear that perceptions about beating challenges have an evident impact on behavioral adjustments. Again the link can be made between facing challenges (addiction) and obstacles (triggers).

Coping with Stres

Stress can have a major impact on a person’s health, behavior, and lifestyle, so much so that stress may induce drug use for those who discover that their lives have become intolerable. In effect, drugs act as medication to stressors. Unfortunately many times these drugs cause more problems than they solve. It is therefore important to manifest far more productive ways of sorting out stress rather than

using drugs or alcohol. In a loose sense, healing is a person’s aptitude to deal with stress. They either are dealing with internal or external stressors, and their way of coping involves either confronting the stressor or avoiding the stressor. Dealing with internal stress is qualified as “emotional” management, whereas external management would be “problem-focused.” It is suspected that optimism would is more strongly related to dealing with stress rather than avoiding it. In this scenario external stressors could be individuals or environments that are associated with or allow for drug use. Internal stress could be anxiety, depression, instability, and the like. Additionally researchers have found that the optimistic style maintains a degree of flexibility. More specifically, optimists deal with both controllable and uncontrollable stressors with different techniques because they recognize that dealing with distinct stressors in a similar manner may be an unsuitable approach. This is because multiple stressors require unique reactive responses. In the framework of substance abuse, the upbeat person understands that certain uncontrollable stressors like environmental pressures should be dealt with accordingly. The optimist cannot understand the thoughts, motivations and behaviors of others, nor can they control the situation of their environment. They can rather, decide how they respond to these external queues by potentially (a) avoiding high-risk situations/people or (b) acknowledging that untenable stress-

ors ought to be taken as they come, and only have so much influence over the optimist’s behavior. Option (b) may sound a little abstract, but an example would be a recovered individual coincidentally meeting an old acquaintance who often use drugs and who is highly associated with drug use. While the old acquaintance may attempt to persuade relapse, the optimist recognizes that uncontrollable external stressors (coincidentally meeting the old friend) are merely influences, not determinants, of behavior. If the optimist perceives his/ her personal ability to control the situation (to say no), then it is more likely the optimist will in fact go along with that behavior. Contrarily, if a recovered person believes they are powerless over their ability to react to unfortunate circumstances, they may be more likely to submit to these external stressors.

Optimism in Treatment

The point of the previously covered discussion is to believe in the incorporation of optimism training in treatment modalities to supplement perception and attitude shifts as they pertain to substance abuse recovery. Given the assistance that optimism can impart on achieving recovery and sobriety, it should be an imperative of treatment centers to adopt and spread this pragmatic strategy. It Is Possible To Eat Delicious Food And Lose Weight type you are eating and the amount you consume. Switching to a dark chocolate saves a lot of fat and calories. There are many reasons that people want to lose weight. Some people simply would like to weigh less and look skinnier. Weight loss for some people is more of a health concern. They want to lose weight to reduce the symptoms of illness

or to rid them of weight related disorders. As previously mentioned, weight loss is truly within the reach of everyone. Not everyone will be able to lose weight the same way. By applying the advice that you found in this article, you can find a weight loss method that works for you. All it takes is knowledge and motivation.

Outsmarting Your Family History By Deborah Pike Olsen

f your family tree is full of broken hearts, you may worry that there’s a space for you on the next rickety branch. After all, 1 to 5 percent of people younger than 65 who have a heart attack are more likely to have inherited a susceptibility to heart disease. In fact, researchers believe at least two dozen gene regions are involved in cardiovascular disease, says Sekar Kathiresan, M.D., author of several recent studies on the genetics of heart disease and director of the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Center at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. At least 13 of those regions predispose you to high levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol, which is proven to cause heart disease. The goal is to identify people at high risk for developing heart disease and treat them early with lifestyle changes and, often, medications that target these genes.

eight loss is within the reach of everyone. It just takes educating yourself about the best way for you to lose weight. Everyone is not the same. This article can help you find ways that are best for you to use when losing weight. Knowledge and motivation can make losing weight a reachable goal. • Sign up for a race or charity walk. Having a specific goal and deadline will give your workouts purpose beyond just losing weight. The structure of a workout plan will also keep your workouts varied from day to day and will prevent boredom. Plus, after feeling the rush of crossing the finish line, you may just be inspired to become a regular racer. • A great way to motivate yourself to lose weight and get more exercise is to join a team sport. For example, a game of pickup basketball can burn over a hundred calories in just half an hour. If you have friends counting on you to show up at an appointed time each weekend, you'll be more likely to go. • When you are trying to lose weight, make sure you are getting enough sleep. Getting at least eight hours of sleep a night will give you more energy during the day for exercise, while decreasing your need for additional calories for that energy. Also, failing to get enough sleep will decrease your metabolism. • Offer to help someone else! Whether it be cleaning, charity work, or just walking with them, studies show that you are more likely to stay motivated if you have obligated yourself to do so. It also doesn't hurt to have that person by your side, showing you encouragement and solidarity in your fight. • A really good way to lose weight is to join a boxing gym. Boxers are some of the most fit athletes in the world and by joining a boxing gym, you'll have access to all the kinds of workouts they do.

Sparring and hitting the speed bag are just two of the workouts you can do. • To keep your nutritious diet in check, don't feel that you need to restrict any particular food. By doing that, you are going to crave that food even more and that will throw your diet completely off track. Just eat the not so healthy food in moderation and you will be fine. • Try eating rich and healthy avocados to help with your weight loss program. They are filled with fat but this fat is actually healthy because it is not saturated. The rich and silky texture can satisfy those who need to watch unhealthy fat consumption that is in many meats. A vegetarian taco or burrito with avocado in place of the ground beef can be as tasty as its meaty counterpart. • Make sure to drink plenty of water every day. It is vital that you do not allow yourself to become dehydrated. Our bodies have a way of mistaking thirstiness for hunger, and that would lead to you eating when in fact you should be trying to quench your thirst. • Breakfast is one of the most integral meals that you can consume, as it will help to reduce the cravings that you have during the day and inject energy into your body. Eat a hearty meal when you wake up and complement this with a light lunch, for maximum weight loss. • If you want to lose weight, try incorporating more walking into your day. Whatever your circumstances or fitness level may be, you can probably at least walk a block or two each day. Walking helps you burn away extra calories which will help you whittle away extra pounds. Park further down the aisle from the store's entrance when you go shopping and start trimming down the pounds and inches. • Giving up chocolate is very difficult when dieting and it is one of the things that many people end up eating when they cheat. There is no need to give up chocolate, you just have to watch the

In the meantime, it pays to figure out your risk for having a heart attack, because you can use that information to protect yourself. Dr. Kathiresan recommends using the Framingham Risk Score, which calculates your chance of developing heart disease in the next 10 years. The test uses your age, gender, total cholesterol level, “good” HDL cholesterol level, blood pressure and whether you smoke to determine your score. If your score is less than 5 percent you’re considered low risk; if it’s 5 to 20 percent you have an intermediate risk; and if it’s more than 20 percent you have a high risk. Regardless of your risk level, there are simple ways to reduce your chances of having a heart attack. “Your lifestyle is key regardless of whether you have a genetic susceptibility to heart disease,” says Dr. Kathiresan.

• Get regular exercise—even if it’s just going for a walk—at least 30 minutes a day, five days per week. • Maintain a healthy weight. Your body mass index should be 25 or less. Use this calculator to determine whether you’re in the ballpark: http://www. nhlbisupport.com/bmi. • Eat foods low in saturated fat (less than 30 percent of total calories). • Don’t smoke. There are a number of medications that have been shown to reduce your risk of a heart attack: these include cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins; aspirin; and blood pressure-lowering drugs, says Dr. Kathiresan. Although many of these medications have only been studied in older adults (women over 60 and men over 50), they may be beneficial if you’re younger and have a strong family history of heart disease. If you’re at particularly high risk, talk to your doctor about which, if any, may be beneficial for you. (Taken from http://www.smartbalance.com)

Family Counseling and Therapy Can Help Your Family By Jamie S Hanson

N

o one wants to think that their family requires family counseling and therapy, but sometimes it really is necessary. A family that is having trouble will benefit from having outside help. Sometimes it just isn't possible to solve everything yourself and that's when you need to bring in counselors. Denver has quite a few to choose from. When does it become necessary to look into counseling? There are many different reasons to look into help, so it depends on the situation. Often there is an event that the family endures before and this is what starts the trouble. If you suspect a situation might be traumatic, it's best to book a session quickly so you can start to deal with things early on. Death. When someone dies in the family, it can be difficult. This is particularly true if it is a parent or child that has died. There will be some drastic changes in how life goes on and it can bring on bouts of depression in the survivors. Everyone deals with grief in a different way, which can be confusing to the others who are also dealing with the loss. This is something that almost always goes better with a little outside help.

Divorce. While divorce may be amicable in some cases, it can still cause problems for the children. Whether you are thinking about getting a divorce or have already made it happen, it can be beneficial for kids to talk with counselors. Denver family counselors can help your children understand that the divorce isn't their fault. Abuse. In cases of abuse, help is almost always required. Whether ongoing or a one time incident, sexual or physical, family members can all benefit from getting a little counseling. The person who was abused will obviously need some help, but what many families don't realize is that everyone can benefit. Parents may feel guilt at not realizing what was happening or for letting things go on. Other siblings may have been abused, too and aren't willing to talk about it, or they might be feeling "survivor's guilt". Other traumatic incident. There's no end to the number of things that can happen in life that traumatizes the family. Whether it's having an accident, or a family member being severely injured or even a natural disaster that can cause panic, these are all things that a trained counselor can aid the family with. Family counseling and therapy can help

families stay together and form a support group in times of trouble. Rather than splitting apart because they can't handle the trauma or the way others deal with it, they can work together on overcoming the things that have occurred and make a better life together. Working through things can take a while. Each person will move at a different speed and it's likely that everyone will require separate sessions with counselors. Denver offices are usually set up so that you can leave children with one parent while one goes in and trade off in this manner so everyone has a chance to speak privately with counselors. Then they can also meet in a group session, which can be very helpful.

Of course, counselors can aid a family that is struggling to deal with non-traumatic things, as well. This is particularly common in families where the children have reached adolescence and are rebelling more than usual or where the parents are not getting along. Family counseling and therapy is a way to help your family. Don't put it off, since the sooner you get help, the better it will work. You just need to find some qualified counselors. Denver features many family counselors, so interview a few to get an idea as to which one works best with you. How You Can Give Your Memory A Boost By Casie Fuchs

P

eople say that a mind is a terrible thing to waste, and they hit the nail right on the head with that catchy little slogan, because, to put it bluntly, once the mind is gone, so too is the person. Check out these great memory tips to improve one of your most precious gifts, your mind. Color code information to help you memorize it. Color coding helps the left and right sides of your brain to work together, and better allows you to commit material to your long term memory. The color also plays as an association to the word or phrase you're working to memorize. We are more likely to remember something that happens to us when we are around other people than when we are alone. People are drawn to others, as a result we remember our time with them, rather than when we are alone. That's why study groups work so well. A useful tip for anyone interested in improving their memory is to regularly work on solving word puzzles and similar types of games. Such puzzles utilize the same skills needed to recall facts, and therefore help keep the mind sharp. Not only will your memory likely improve, you will also have a great deal of fun. Use the power of positive thinking to help improve your memory. If you tell

yourself over and over again that you have a bad memory you soon will come to believe it. If, on the other hand, you tell yourself that you have a great memory, it can cause you to subconsciously change your actions and information processing patterns so that your memory begins to improve. The best way to keep your memory sharp is to make sure that you stay mentally active. Physical exercise keeps your body in shape, and mental exercise keeps

your mind in shape. Doing crossword puzzles, reading complicated passages, playing board games, or learning a musical instrument can all help you keep your mental edge. Reducing distractions in your immediate environment will go a long way in helping you to remember something. Phones ringing, children screaming or horns honking are not conducive to memory for anyone so limit the amount of distractions your mind has to deal with, and you will increase your ability to remember! Putting information into categories will help you to remember it later! Everything has a category and compartmentalizing things in your memory by category can give you much greater recall. For example, chicken and hot dogs on your grocery list go into the category of meat and milk and water into beverages and so on. A well-nourished brain will definitely perform better in terms of memory. Eat lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Also, drink a lot of water. You should drink up to eight glasses daily. Another way to improve your diet is to limit the amount of saturated fat, but eat fish or supplements for omega-3 fatty acids (which improves brain function and fights against Alzheimer's). If you find that you are losing things as soon as you set them down, try dedicating a spot to them. Make sure that you are putting your keys in the same spot every day. Make a spot for your glasses or the book you are reading. If you make a habit of putting everything in its place, forgetting where they are won't be a problem. A way to improve your brain's ability to handle tough challenges and remember things better is to spend 15 minutes to half an hour each day playing brain teaser games like Sudoku, crosswords, or electronic brain teasers. These games challenge and stimulate your brain in ways that you often wouldn't otherwise. To aid your memory, try connecting the new information you are trying to remember with knowledge you already possess. For example, you can link in-

formation to a more familiar concept. Over time, this process will make it easier to store information in your long-term memory. Here's a surprising fact about the relationship between memory and alcoholmoderate drinking can actually improve memory and prevent Alzheimer's! Studies have shown that moderate drinking (defined as drinking two glasses of wine or less per day) can improve cognitive function overall and helps the drinkers score better on memory tests. When you're having trouble remembering something, like when you've been studying for too long and can't focus on the information anymore, try getting outside and taking a walk or jog. This will help you clear your head and get more oxygen pumping to your brain, thus letting your brain work at a higher capacity. One fun way to help keep your memory sharp is to play brain games, such as puzzles and logic games. These types of games will help improve attention span, concentration, mental flexibility and memory. To keep your brain in top shape, it is recommended that you play brain games at least 15 minutes each day. According to recent research, playing brain games can even aid in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. Did you know that reading out loud can significantly increase your ability to memorize and recall new information? Reading the information as text and also hearing it with your ears exercises multiple pathways for information to get into your brain thus enhancing your chances for recall. In addition; when you read aloud you are more likely to focus on each word and not just quickly skim the text. So when you want to retain the information just speak up! As you can see, there are many different ways you can build a stronger memory. You do not have to have to have a poor memory. Do not just accept the fact that you have a hard time remembering things. You can become a fast learner who enjoys success.

How to Improve Your Memory

By Peter Mangiola

T

here are a lot of articles out there about how to deliberately remember some list of items or set of facts. Elder care specialists can attest to the fact that what most of us mean when we ask how we can improve our memories has nothing to do with lists of facts -- it has everything to do with figuring out how to stop forgetting where we put our keys. That kind of memory improvement takes an entirely different kind of effort than consciously using mnemonic devices. How Memories are Formed

There is a general 3 step process involved with memory formation. To remember anything, you need to: Take note of what it is you need to remember, place that note into your memory bank, and retrieve it when needed. Noticing Things If you're a "dreamer" or under the kind of stress that causes you to think obsessively about things that aren't right in front of you, it can be easy to completely fail to notice something. Even if you're normally a pretty attentive person, you may be under temporary conditions that make attention difficult, such as trying to read a business report at a nightclub. You may not notice the sudden inexplicable increase in office expenses in September or the flirtatious hottie making eyes at you from across the room. The way to improve your ability to notice things is to follow the classic Zen advice: be here now. Don't multitask, keep your environment free of distractions as much as possible, and don't do anything critically important while you're obsessing over something unrelated. If you know that you're prone to forgetting a particular thing -- like your keys -- make a special mental note when you put them down. Literally stop and say out loud, "I'm putting my keys on top of the fridge." When you say something out loud, you can't help but notice what you're saying. It also engages different (and more) areas in your brain than just saying it to yourself, which creates an even deeper form of 'noticing'. This is why many senior care professionals encourage their patients to engage in this practice. Forming a Memory

If you've properly noticed a fact, that fact is in your short-term memory, and you're partway toward adding it to your long-term memory banks. The motion from short-term to long-term memory happens in your brain while you sleep, and it requires the presence of a key neurotransmitter. That means that your best bet to create a long-term memory out of a short-term one requires: A good night's sleep, including an absolute minimum of six hours, but preferably eight. A supply of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter most responsible for memory creation. If you don't get good sleep, you're dooming yourself to forget a lot of what happened in the previous day unless it was repeated often or was highly traumatic. And if your diet doesn't promote the creation of acetylcholine in your brain, your ability to create new memories can be highly impacted. (There is no proven 'ideal diet' for memory building, but it's highly suspected that Acetyl-L-Carnatine, an amino acid found primarily in red meat, and Taurine, an amino acid found primarily in seafood and red meat, are both very helpful to acetylcholine creation.) Memory Retrieval Retrieving a memory can be more difficult than many people give it credit for, because memories are much more rich and complex than people believe. When you remember something, you don't remember it as an abstract fact ("Ruth's phone number is XXX-XXXX"). Instead, you remember all of the stimuli that you were experiencing when that fact entered your short-term memory. What this means is that if you're having trouble retrieving a given memory, surrounding yourself with cues that match the environment and circumstances you initially encountered the fact in can help. For example, if you were in your backyard listening to Kenny G when you first convinced Ruth to give you her digits, heading out and turning up your iPod to some saxophone jams may well 'jar loose' that memory that won't come out easily when you're in the kitchen listening to Ludacris. The Weight Loss BattleIt’s a Family Affair

By Dr. Wendy Johnson Contributing Writer

L

osing weight is not an easy task. It’s even more difficult if the people around you have bad eating habits and have no desire to exercise. Studies have shown that family and friends tend to gain weight together, predominately because they share similar eating and exercise habits. According to Linda Spangle, RN, author of 100 Days of Weight Loss, “it will be very difficult to lose weight when only one member of the family is trying to change their eating habits and the rest of the family either doesn't have to, or really doesn't want to". So, is it possible to obtain their support so you can reach your goal? Absolutely, however it is going to take some work. The first step is to talk to your spouse or significant other, mention things like aging gracefully, reducing the chances of health issues, better sex, more stamina. Then talk to your kids, discuss the importance of healthy eating, brainpower, muscles and energy to work and play. Educate them about portion control and mindful eating; remind them that it's not a good idea to eat until they're stuffed, but only until they're full. If your doctor has advised that the family revise their eating habits, it’s a good idea to mention that to your kids and spouse or significant other as well. No, you don’t want to scare them; however doing this validates your concern.

Below are 5 tips that will help you accomplish your goal: 1. Ask each family member to make a list of their favorite treats. Select those that you like least to keep in the house. This reduces your temptation. 2. Do not grocery shop when you are hungry and only shop with a list. Only put healthy items on the list. Each person in the house is allowed one treat per trip. This is allowed on the main shopping day as quick trips to the grocery store do not count. 3. Portion control – this is very important. You can make high calorie dinners; however you can only make enough for one meal. No leftovers. 4. Ask the family to eat high calorie treats outside the home. It’s pretty basic, if it’s not in the house, you will not eat it. 5. Cheat! – Take a different approach. Pour skim milk into a whole milk container, add water to the orange juice, cut some sugar and fat out of each recipe. Go for gradual changes -- and mum's the word! Chances are your family won't even notice. Losing weight on your own is not a good approach. Effectively communicate and let people know what you are doing; solicit the assistance of family and friends, as having a support system is always encouraging. This can be a very fulfilling (life changing) process, however it is vital that you create realistic goals, obtain the support of your family and friends and last but not least, you must have patience. So, let’s get started and remember…Begin with the END in mind!

Arthritis Exercise Program Diabetes In Adolescents By Parry Patil

P

eople with arthritis oftentimes find themselves in a Catch-22 situation. Their rational mind tells them that gentle exercise can help to relieve the pain they are experiencing. Their physical body is screaming "it hurts to walk; you can't possibly expect me to exercise!" So, what is a person to do and how can they overcome this inner conflict? The moment you are diagnosed with arthritis, your healthcare practitioner should provide you with a comprehensive arthritis treatment plan that includes some form of exercise. This plan should also provide dietary instructions, which explain the types of foods that can help reduce arthritis pain; along with a list of foods known to aggravate symptoms -i.e. red meat, dairy products, food additives, and processed foods, to name but a few. Many arthritis sufferers find yoga or Tai Chi exercises an effective form of exercise. Others prefer water aerobics; weight training and muscle strengthening exercises; range-of-motion exercises such as dancing; or aerobic and endurance exercises such as cycling. It's best to consult with your healthcare practitioner before starting any exercise program. It's of particular importance if you have arthritis.

Many insurance companies offer their members discounts to health clubs, exercise videos, dietary supplements, etc. Check your policy to determine if you have benefits you are unaware of. Oftentimes, health club memberships offer up to a 50 percent discount to insurance provider members. Most of these health clubs offer private sessions with a qualified trainer who can assist you in developing an arthritis exercise program best suited to your needs. Before exercising, it is recommended to apply heat to sore joints to help warm them up and allow them to become more flexible. Always begin your arthritis exercise program by stretching before and after the routine. Last, but not least, apply cold packs to sore joints at the end of the exercise work-out. Choose an exercise program that you enjoy. If you dislike using free weights, chances are you will not stick with the program. However, if you love water aerobics and it eases your pain, you'll be more inclined to participate on a regular basis. iabetes is a rapidly growing, serious health problem among youngster today. More than 13,000 adolescents are diagnosed for type 1 diabetes, every year in America. There has also been an increase in the number of teenagers with type 2 diabetes, which was more common among adults over 40 and who were overweight. Clinics are reporting that nearly half of the new childhood diabetes cases are of type 2. Adolescents, who are obese and had type 2 diabetes in the family history, are at a greater risk of developing diabetes. Diabetes is a in which where the human body is incapable of producing or utilizing insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the body in order to get energy by converting starches, sugar and other items. Since the insulin isn't used properly in diabetic people, the blood sugar level increases. This glucose buildup is found in blood and is then passed onto the urine and comes out of the body and the major source of body energy is lost. Diabetes is a serious chronic disease and should be handled at proper time; otherwise it can create serious problems. It can pose a risk and can damage parts of the human body such as eyes, teeth, gums, blood vessels, nerves, and kidneys. This is the reason why diabetes is responsible in most of the cases of adult blindness, kidney failure and lower limb amputations. And if left untreated, it can cause stroke, heart disease and eventually, death. These problems are not only faced by adults, but also adolescents who get diabetes in their childhood. The important factor in treatment of diabetes is to keep the blood sugar level normal at all times. There are basically two types of diabetes that will affect an adolescent. It is type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes affects the immune system's function as the systems attacks the pancreas' insulin producing cells, also known as the beta cells. Because of this, the pancreas loses the ability to manufacture insulin. This is the reason why people with type 1 diabetes take insulin every day. The symptoms are weight loss, increase in urination and; thirst, blurred vision, tiredness and constant hunger. And if the adolescent isn't treated at the right time, he/she can

slip into a diabetic coma which can endanger his/her life. In type2 diabetes, the body is incapable of properly using the insulin produced by the body and requires insulin from an external source, too. The symptoms of type 2 diabetes are similar to type 1 diabetes. The teenager feels sick, tired, nauseated, and thirsty. The wounds will recover very slowly; he/she will get infections frequently, will develop blurred vision and will experience weight loss. Parents play a vital role in determining the problem. They should constantly observe their child for eating disorders or signs of depression. Although cigarettes, drugs and alcohol should be avoided by all adolescents and children, it is even more important that youngster with diabetes should stay away from these things as they can worsen the situation. A person with diabetes, who switches to smoking, is at risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and circulatory problems. Consumption of alcohol can cause hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. It is the duty of the parents to make their child aware of the possible risk they would face if they start to smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs. Children and adolescents, who have diabetes, face many challenges while trying to lead a normal life. They have to think twice before doing simple things as going to a party, playing sports and even when staying over with friends. This is because they require to intake oral medication or insulin. Their blood sugar level must be checked many times throughout the day. Also, at gatherings, they have to avoid many food items. Because of this they will feel different from the crowd and can feel left out. Not only does diabetes pose behavioral challenges, but also emotional challenges. Along with doctor consultation, a psychologist must also be consulted who can deal with the emotional challenges of the adolescent. The family should also play an active role in making the youngster feel better. The family should work in collaboration with physician, dietitian and diabetes educators. Teachers, counselors, school nurses, day care providers, and other community members can provide extended support and guidance. They can provide help with transportation, mental health counseling, health education, social services and financial services.

Why You Should Take The Correct Amount Of Nutritional Supplements

By Alex Jacob

I

n nutritional supplements, the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) set by the FDA is a guideline of the minimum amounts needed of a nutrient to stay healthy, but in numerous cases consuming more may be right for you. You ought to consult your doctor before taking larger quantities but in many cases, additional quantities may be needed to meet your personal requirements. Some medications and medical conditions can impact the body's ability to absorb and utilize vitamins and minerals and your doctor, nutritionist or other health care provider can advise you what amounts are best for you. Keep in mind that if you take the right amounts of herbal or other supplements, there is a huge benefit in better health, more energy and greater mental clarity. The problem occurs only when vitamins and minerals are consumed in huge quantities, well over the published RDA. Since many nutritional supplements can appear as if they are candy to a child, always store your supplements in a safe place, out of reach of little hands. One reason it is important to take the correct amounts of nutritional supplements is that over-supplementation can impact your health and even be hazardous. For instance, if you take high doses of Vitamin E, it won't be harmful but it can cause Vitamin K to be useless in clotting blood. If too much Vitamin E were taken in conjunction with blood thinners that various medical conditions require, significant dangers such as nose bleeds and injuries that can't be stopped from bleeding could potentially result. Since Vitamin E is stored in the body's fat, the impact can be cumulative when consuming too much of this necessary vitamin. If excessive amounts of calcium are taken, the potential that formation of kidney

stones can happen should be considered. Certain dietary issues such as high quantities of dairy products in the diet combined with large quantities of tea add to the possibility of painful stone formation. Folic acid, when taking the right amounts of nutritional supplements, is very important. When too much is taken, Vitamin B12 deficiency can be masked. Amounts of niacin well in excess of the RDA can damage liver tissues as well as cause gastrointestinal upsets while the right dosage can be very important to good health and a sense of wellness. Iron is another thing to be certain to take the right amount rather than too much. Some children have been poisoned by overdosing on iron and you should always make certain to purchase iron in a childproof package. Selenium, when taking the right amounts, is very beneficial. Amounts over the RDA can result in vomiting, nervous system problems and even hair and nail loss. Lesions on the skin can appear. It is very important to take this very necessary supplement in recommended quantities. Taking doses, much over the RDA, of Vitamin A has the potential to cause serious liver damage. It can even cause birth defects if huge amounts are taken during pregnancy, especially if this occurs during the first trimester of the pregnancy. Nerve disorders and muscle weakness can result from taking far too much Vitamin B6 over a prolonged period of time. Vitamin C can cause diarrhea and urinary tract problems if taken in extremely large doses. Taking the right amounts of nutritional supplements containing Vitamin D is important. The result of overdosing on Vitamin D can be irreversible kidney damage, potentially causing the need for dialysis for the rest of the person's lifetime. Heart and blood vessel damage can also occur

when the dosage is much too high. Zinc, a very necessary component for health, can reduce the body's ability to absorb copper and mute the body's immune system response. Immune system response is crucial for the body to be able to fight off illness and disease. Any supplements, even if they only contain herbs and botanicals, have the potential to be dangerous if not used with caution. Again, if taken in the right amounts, they can be quite useful; just don't take higher quantities than recommended. Since there is no RDA for any of these products controlled by the FDA, never exceed the dosage on the label unless a qualified health care professional tells you to do so. Also, remember to keep in mind, herbal supplements are not necessarily approved by the FDA but instead, are only regulated. Brewer's yeast in huge amounts can cause nausea and diarrhea. Chaparral can result in toxic hepatitis when overdosage occurs. Comfrey in large amounts has been found to cause liver damage. Excessive use of germanium can result in kidney failure and has even resulted in death so be vigilant about any product that contains this substance. Ginseng can help memory and mental clarity in the right amounts when too much has been shown

to cause blood pressure fluctuations, anxiety and insomnia. Ma Huang when taken in large amounts can cause blood pressure to increase, muscle injury to occur and nerve damage. Yohimbe has the potential to cause kidney failure, seizures and death when taken in huge amounts. It is easy to see why you must take the right amounts of nutritional supplements. The benefits are great when used properly but the dangers, as with almost any medication or natural supplement, can be very bad. Listen to your health care professionals about how much to take and be sure to let them know what natural supplements you may be ingesting so they can ensure your health remains the very best. By avoiding dangerous over-dosage of substances that are healthy when taken in smaller quantities, always read the label and if you doctor has recommended taking more or less than the label recommendations, note that fact on the bottle or package so that you don't make a dangerous error. Composition Of A Good 5 Methods Of Nutrient Rich Diet Colonic Treatment

By John Mark Lewis

By Michele Tamez

F

or the human body to function well, it should be fed a good balance of vitamins and nutrients. There are three primary macronutrients which we consume namely protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Without these, our body won't be able to function properly. Since we cannot synthesize vitamins in sufficient quantities, they must be obtained from dietary sources. We also need several minerals for our body to function smoothly. Calcium and phosphorous, for example, aside from being important in the strengthening and lengthening of your bones are needed by your heart to pump efficiently. Salt, aside from adding flavor to your dishes, contain sodium and chlorine which help in maintaining fluid balance and producing digestive juices, respectively. Mineral salts are ionic in nature, they help regulate pH levels in our blood and body. Maintenance of proper pH levels is crucial for the proper functioning of the body, a balanced supply of necessary mineral nutrients ensures that natural pH balance is maintained. There are also minerals which you require in lesser amounts of such as iron, iodine and zinc. While only minute levels are required, several ailments will emanate from not being able to meet the recommended dietary allowance overtime. You can get both macrominerals and trace elements from dietary sources. If your diet is deficient on essential nutrients, taking dietary supplements on a regular basis is recommended. Beside mineral nutrients, the body needs water, you need to keep your body hydrated. six to eight glasses of water a day is more than sufficient for the average person, if you have an active lifestyle,

your requirement will be higher. Taking the adequate amounts of fluids is essential for the growth and maintenance of your body. It is also important in the elimination of unneeded and harmful substances from your system. Alkaline water, called so because of its slightly alkaline pH, is believed to benefit the body by reducing blood acidity. This trend is brought about by the heightened awareness of the public to alkaline water benefits. The manufacturers of alkaline water additives claim that the regular consumption of alkaline water protects against cancer and may even slow down aging. Also called ionized water, this water preparation is mineralrich and consequently keeps the blood pH at a neutral state. It is believed that certain food items, most notably carbonated drinks and junk foods, can make the blood acidic. When not neutralized, blood that is too acidic can have deleterious effects, like lethargy and abnormal heart rhythms. Still there are those who do not believe in these alkaline water benefits saying further that these are overstated. The argument between believers and non-believers essentially fuels interest for the product. Ultimately, the users are the only people who can testify whether or not alkaline water works, and the present consensus is that it works. About The Author To ensure that your body works at maximum efficiency, maintaining a neutral pH is important. If your blood is acidic, you will feel lethargic and unwell. Hence, taking alkaline water is good for you. More alkaline water benefits can be found here.

ccording to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 142,672 people in the United States were diagnosed with colon cancer in 2007, out of which 53,219 people died of the disease. The CDC states that colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States. Initial constipation, which turns into diverticulitis, may ultimately lead to colon cancer. In order to avoid this, one must opt for colonic treatment at the right time. Which is the Most Effective Method of Colonic Treatment? There are several methods of colonic treatment through which colon can be cleansed of accumulated waste. These are: • Colon hydrotherapy: This is the most effective and preferred method of colon cleansing. The practitioner inserts a tube into the anus, through which about 5-10 gallons of water is flushed into the colon. The process forces the removal of the compacted matter from the large intestines and also helps the body get rid of all toxins. • Laxatives: Laxatives form a part of symptomatic treatment for constipation. Although many doctors recommend this procedure in special conditions, its recurring use may lead to dehydration. • Diet and herbal supplements: Colon cleansing can also be performed at home by following a special diet and consuming herbal tea or supplements. However, this method is not as efficient as colon irrigation, and may not remove toxins from the body. Still, since these are natural products, they do not cause any side-effects and actually do help to a certain extent • Enemas: Enemas can also be used safely to cleanse the colon, but they are ef-

fective for only the lowest part of the colon. The rest of the debris and toxins still remain intact in the upper colon. • Oxygen based cleanser: In this method, compacted fecal matter is melted through an oxidation process. Although it is an effective process to cleanse the colon, it may not suit people with some types of health conditions. Based on the above discussion, it can be inferred that every colonic treatment method has its own advantages and disadvantages. However, many practitioners credit colon hydrotherapy as the safest method for colon cleansing. This method can also be combined with herbal treatment methods afterwards to prolong its effect. Colonic Treatment: How to Prepare Your Body for Colon Irrigation Before going for water based colonic treatment, you need to prepare your body to achieve the maximum benefit. • Put yourself on a diet of vegetables and fruits for at least 2-3 days before the treatment. • Drink plenty of water and juices. • Do not drink alcohol or smoke at least a week before you go for the treatment. • If possible, try not eating non-vegetarian food. • Refrain from eating 3-4 hours before the colon hydrotherapy. All the aforementioned tips should also be practiced after the treatment. If followed closely, they can help to keep your colon clean and healthy forever. For more information and for the safest treatment options, click Colonic Treatment. This clinic offer state of the art colon hydrotherapy and other natural therapies for various conditions.

Cook Leaner! 6 Quick and Simple Ways to Lighten Up Meals Without Sacrificing Flavor smartbalance.com

Go for healthier butter alternatives. Vegetable-oil spreads can give you the taste of butter without the extra heart-clogging fat, dietary cholesterol and extra calories. (Compare Smart Balance® Buttery Spread*) Just be sure to check the label for cooking purposes: Regular varieties (>60% vegetable oil content) are great for cooking and baking, but anything marked “light” should only be used as a topping due to the higher water content. As for amounts, it’s usually an even swap: one cup of buttery spread for each cup butter.

Reach for lentils. Swap these legumes for half or all of the ground meat called for in chili and casseroles. Your dish will still be protein-rich but won’t sacrifice texture, and it’ll have less saturated fat than all-meat options do. Say hello to a better mayo. Smart Balance® Omega Plus™ Light Mayonnaise Dressing has half the fat of the regular stuff (5g total fat per serving versus 10g in regular mayo), and it contains natural plant sterols and ALA omega-3, so it can actually help support healthy cholesterol levels already within normal limits.

Bake a better cake. Monkeying with a baking recipe can be disastrous, but some substitutions may be acceptable. If your recipe calls for white flour, for instance, Smart Balance staff dietitian, Tammi Hancock, R.D., suggests exchanging up to half the amount with whole-grain flour to up its fiber quotient. Or, swap pureed beans for half the oil or butter a recipe requires. “It adds tons of soluble fiber [to the dish] and helps lower fat, calories and cholesterol,” she explains. Have an oil change. Switch regular vegetable oil with nutrient-dense olive or canola oil, or use a product like Smart Balance® Cooking Oil, which blends both types with soybean oil (it provides a better blend of mono- and polyunsaturated fats). If you’re sautéing or frying, spray, don’t pour. A one-second blast of Smart Balance® Cooking Spray is enough to coat a small frying pan and adds just 10 calories to the dish. Choose whole grains. When you can, swap whole-grain options for white rice, bread, and pasta to add more fiber in your diet. Fiber-rich foods keep you feeling full longer than those that aren’t. They also take longer to digest, which helps you avoid the blood-sugar spike and crash triggered by refined grain products. Looking for a fun way to sneak in more fiber? Consider Smart Balance® Smart ‘N Healthy™ Microwave Popcorn.
