ave you been putting off that dental visit? Forget what you think you know about the dentist’s office. Acclaimed dental guru, Bruce Matson, DDS, has been creating beautiful and world class smiles for Houstonians and those in the surrounding areas for over 20 years. Dr. Matson credits a part of his success to his work ethic received as an athlete and the wisdom passed down by his father. Also a lab technician, Dr. Matson has changed the way that we look at the dentist, by creating a patient experience that is personalized and compassionate. No longer is the dental office visit that drab and dreary experience that you have to fear, because Dr. Matson and his staff are dedicated to providing that gentle and one of a kind experience that is sometimes lacking at other dental offices. When you visit Dr. Matson’s office, your smile is his top priority. Dr. Matson and his staff starting every morning off with prayer is just one of the ways that they keep the high standards that have kept patients healthy for over 2 decades. Dr. Mat-

son and his experienced and highly qualified staff are continuously devoted to restoring and enhancing the natural beauty of a patient’s smile using conservative, state-of-the-art procedures that result in beautiful, long lasting smiles and healthy teeth and gums! He has a standard of excellence in personalized dental care.

Dr. Matson and his team of highly trained, qualified and skilled professionals pride themselves on providing patients with the care they need to keep that smile healthy. To give patients the best possible service and results, they are committed to continual education and learning. They attend dental lectures, meetings and dental

Before Dr. Matson achieved dental success, athletics was a large part of his life. Taking what he learned as an athlete has made a positive impact in his life throughout his adulthood and in his career as a dentist. Because of athletics, Dr. Matson learned that you’re going to have injuries, but despite the injuries, you’ve got to come back, train and prepare. Dr. Matson expresses, “Athletics taught me how to be motivated, how to have energy and that I always need to be aware and pay attention. My athletic experience taught me to look at the details, and paying attention to details is a large part of my success in dentistry.” His

athletic experience and his work ethic was due to his mother and father’s example. Dr. Matson’s father was Ollie Matson, U.S. Olympian, 6-Time Pro Bowler, Pro Football Hall of Famer and College Football Hall of Famer. Dr. Matson witnessed his father’s hard work and dedication growing up. He remembers seeing his father always training and working hard, even in the off season. “My father always told me not to brag, but to let my actions speak for themselves. No job is too small for me. I have no arrogance. It’s because of teamwork that my office has been successfully serving patients for 25 years,” says Dr. Matson. When he talks about teamwork and staff, this includes his wife, Jocelyn. He refers to her as the “co-boss,” and she is a great inspiration around the office that helps make the office efficient in her role as office manager. Dr. Matson understands that one of the top patient concerns is sterilization, and that is why he uses uncompromising safety and infection control at his office. Patients know and can trust that they are receiving the best quality dental care in a clean and sterile environment that is in accordance with the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. Dr. Matson is known for his integrity. For 25 years, he has been one of the top dentists in the area because of his integrity and character. His patients don’t need to worry about receiving a procedure that they don’t need. Dr. Matson only gives patients the procedures that are necessary for their oral health. Dr. Matson says, “My patients trust me and that the consultation they receive is based on necessity only.

“My father always told me not to brag, but to let my actions speak for themselves. No job is too small for me. I have no arrogance. It’s because of teamwork that my office has been successfully serving patients for 25 years.” — Bruce Matson, DDS

It does not make sense not to go to the dentist. My patients trust me, and I want to keep that trust.” In his work, Dr. Matson stresses the importance of maintaining your oral health because believe it or not, oral health can impact your overall health. People with gum disease have a higher rate of heart disease than those who

do not have gum disease. According to webmd.com, though the reasons are not fully understood, it is clear that gum disease and heart disease often go hand in hand. Up to 91% of patients with heart disease have periodontitis, compared to 66% of people with no heart disease. The two conditions have several risk factors in common, such

as smoking, unhealthy diet and excess weight. There is the theory that inflammation in the mouth causes inflammation in the blood vessels. This can increase the risk for heart attack in a number of ways. Inflamed blood vessels allow less blood to travel between the heart and the rest of the body, raising blood pressure. There is also a greater risk that fatty plaque will break off the wall of a blood vessel and travel to the heart or the brain, causing a heart attack or stroke. As a practice, Dr. Matson is a true believer that preventative care and education are keys to optimal dental health. He focuses on thorough exams – checking the overall health of your teeth and gums, performing oral cancer exams and taking x-rays when necessary. He also knows that routine sealants, flossing, cleanings and fluoride are all helpful in preventing dental disease. Not only is Dr. Matson focused on the beauty of a patient’s smile, but he’s also concerned with the patient’s health. Dr. Matson has built a foundation of trust. He and his staff understand how dental visits can be uneasy for some, so he has created a relaxing and positive experience for his patients. He takes the time to do little things, like slower injections and anything else to let the patients know that he cares. Because the patients are a top priority, he is a member of professional dental associations to help him stay abreast of the changes and recommendations for the dental profession. Dr. Matson is a member of the following professional dental associations: •  American Dental Association •  Texas Dental Association •  Greater Houston Dental Association •  Gulf State Dental Association Dr. Matson has received the following awards and recognitions: •  Top Texas Southern University Distinguished Alumni Award •  Houston Area Top Dentist (since 2008) •  Stanford’s Who’s Who •  United Concordia’s Outstanding Service Award Recipient (1995 to current) Dr. Matson and his skilled, qualified and reliable staff provide patients with the highest level of quality dental care. Dr. Matson always puts his patients first and says, “The patients are number one. We are always looking out for the patients. I am nothing without the patients.” After practicing for 25 years, receiving awards and recognitions, he still has a humble spirit. He has met and exceeded expectations in the field of dentistry, and he shows no signs of slowing down, but is just as passionate as he was when he first started to create beautiful and world class smiles. If the chest does not rise, reposition the head and try again. •  Wait 5-10 seconds, and then check for breathing again. •  Continue until they are breathing on their own or until help arrives.

You are walking in your house, and you see your loved one lying flat on the floor. What do you do? If they have stopped breathing, or their lips and fingernails have turned blue, they need immediate help. One of the leading responses in saving their life is to perform rescue breathing until help arrives. Immediately begin helping him or her. Fear, reluctance or ignorance could cause death, if a response is not given.

Stay calm and tap the victim’s shoulder lightly. Ask them if they are okay. Wait for a response: •  If they can respond, ask him or her if they feel alright. If the answer is “Yes,” ask if they would like assistance in standing. •  If the answer is “No,” call 911 (or your local emergency number) or have the loved one taken to a hospital.

How do you know if your breathing is effective?

Second rule to saving a life through rescue breathing:

1.  You should be able to see the person’s chest rise and fall with each breath you give them along with feeling and hearing the air come back out with each breath. 2. That is where the concept of: “Look, Listen and Feel” for breathing was originated. You are going to see and

You should feel a pumping in the throat.

Fears of Performing Rescue Breathing: Barrier Devices A barrier device is one type of personal protective equipment designed to protect rescuers from exposure to infection when in close contact with victims. HIV and the hepatitis family of viruses are carried in blood and some other body fluids. Since there is no way to know if the victim of a cardiac arrest is carrying these or any other communicable diseases, it’s wise to use a barrier device to keep body fluids out of the rescuer’s mouth during rescue breathing. Breast Cancer: The Facts By Dawn Paul

Associate Editor

B

eing that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, if you have been putting off that yearly mammogram and yearly health screening, this is the perfect time to take charge of your health. This month around the country, there will be countless and necessary campaigns to increase our awareness of the disease. Many people are aware of breast cancer, however, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages. This month encourages the country and our community to take charge when it comes to breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., established in 1991, is one of the most reputable sources for information when it comes to breast cancer, facts and awareness. The National Breast Cancer Foundation has been providing help and inspiring hope to those affected by breast cancer through education, support services and early detection.

Facts about Breast Cancer in the United States •  One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. •  Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. •  Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women. •  Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. •  Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 410 will die each year.

What Are the Symptoms of Breast Cancer? In its early stages, breast cancer usually has no symptoms. As a tumor develops, you may note the following signs (webmd.com): •  A lump in the breast or underarm that persists after your menstrual cycle. This is often the first apparent symptom of breast cancer. Lumps associated with breast cancer are usually painless, although some may cause a prickly sensation. Lumps are usually visible on a mammogram long before they can be seen or felt.

•  Swelling in the armpit. •  Pain or tenderness in the breast. Although lumps are usually painless, pain or tenderness can be a sign of breast cancer. •  A noticeable flattening or indentation on the breast, which may indicate a tumor that cannot be seen or felt. •  Any change in the size, contour, texture, or temperature of the breast. A reddish, pitted surface like the skin of an orange could be a sign of advanced breast cancer. •  A change in the nipple, such as a nipple retraction, dimpling, itching, a burning sensation, or ulceration. A scaly rash of the nipple is symptomatic of Paget's disease, which may be associated with an underlying breast cancer.

•  Unusual discharge from the nipple that may be clear, bloody, or another color. It's usually caused by benign conditions but could be due to cancer in some cases. •  A marble-like area under the skin. •  An area that is distinctly different from any other area on either breast. Breast cancer is one of the leading health crises for women in the United States, and its early diagnosis is critical to survival. According to The National Cancer Institute (NCI), getting a high-quality mammogram and having a clinical breast exam on a regular basis are the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early. The National Cancer Institute recommends women age 40 and older receive annual mammogram screenings to provide early detection of breast cancer. This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it is the perfect time to take charge of your health.

arbara Jordan Endeavors Corporation (BJEC) is a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships and services for students with emotional, mental and physical disabilities. Under the leadership of Founder, Thelma Scott, since 2000, BJEC has been encouraging, empowering and equipping students to become self-sufficient, discover their maximum potential and achieve their academic goals. The month of October was a busy time for this well-respected Houston community gem, as they raised awareness for suicide, the disabled and gave their time addressing other health concerns impacting our Houston neighbors. Recently BJEC hosted a 5K All Diversity Walk Run and Roll food and toy drive benefitting the Houston Food Bank, and this event is just one of the many initiatives throughout the year that BJEC hosts to raise scholarship funds. BJEC works tirelessly to reduce the drop-out and suicide rate and to support students with “unique abilities” in high school completing and finishing their education. Many students with these unique abilities are often forgotten, and that’s why BJEC is vital in the Houston community. BJEC encourages and nurtures these students to increase and fortify their capabilities in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and math. BJEC’s outreach to their students doesn’t end after high school, but BJEC is unique in that they continue the outreach efforts for their students throughout their college career.

Thelma Scott, BJEC Founder Scott founded BJEC in December 2000. As an undergraduate student, she came to grips with her own hidden disabilities and personal challenges of living in a world that lacks compassion and understanding for people who are different

with a unique ability. As Scott survived breast cancer, spinal injury, memory loss and other illnesses after chemotherapy, she continued pursuing her college education. Through her own personal journey to triumph and willingness to beat the odds, she was inspired to advocate for people with disabilities. It has been her life’s work to help people with disabilities overcome barriers, live free and enjoy their best quality of life. Scott is unstoppable when it comes to serving the Houston community through BJEC. Not only has she received recognition on a local level, but

also at state and national levels. Some of the recognition Scott has received includes, but is not limited to: •  WSN Community Advocate of the Year Award 2015 •  TRA Justin Dart (ADA) Advocate of the Year Award 2015 •  Texas GFSC Self-Advocate of the Year Award 2015 •  d-mars.com Top 30 Influential Women of Houston 2014 •  Super Lady Soiree Honoree Houston 2014 •  TWEF Woman of Worth Award

2013 (presented by Stedman Graham) •  Parents, Teachers and Students Association Community Support Award 2013 •  Rotary District 5890 Spotlight Award 2013 BJEC is fulfilling its vision to reduce the dropout rate and suicide rate for high school students with disabilities, by assisting college-ready students with disabilities through successful collaborations with school districts who partner with the Barbara Jordan Ambassadors Program. BJEC envisions and works within these school partnerships to help create an atmosphere that does not tolerate or accept bullying and intimidation, which can affect a student with disabilities to cease personal educational goals and sometimes drop out of high school. BJEC encourages and empowers students in the area of self-awareness to become advocates for people with disabilities who will help create a safe and nurturing environment for all students. BJEC is a vital organization in Houston, paying it forward and giving encouragement, compassion and opportunities to the disabled. Where some have forgotten the disabled, BJEC has not. Scott has managed to create an amazing initiative allowing those students with disabilities to finish their high school education and to have a successful college career and life. Think Pink and Make Some Healthy Lifestyle Changes

By Rhonda Dallas

A

Contributing Writer

s an African-American woman, it is my passion and goal to bring awareness to women of all races that there is a direct link between obesity and breast cancer. Both diseases are on the rise and with women who are postmenopausal, there is great concern. The good news is that we can play a key role in our health by keeping our weight under control, thus improving our chances of not becoming a statistic. Playing a key role in our health can help combat obesity and breast cancer.

Why is this so important? Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women and especially African-American women. 1 in 8 women in the U.S. alone will develop breast cancer. If we understand the correlation between obesity and breast cancer risks, it will give us more reason to eat healthy, exercise and to de-stress ourselves.

What are the risk factors? By definition, a risk factor is anything that increases your risk for a disease. With this being said, the number 1 risk factor is being a woman. Women have a 99% higher chance than men of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Risk factor number 2 is that as we age, we are

at a much higher risk to develop breast cancer, especially women who are over 55 years old. The number 3 risk factor is our DNA, which accounts for about 5-10%, due to genetic defects inherited from a parent. Risk factor number 4 is our family history of breast cancer. A mother, aunt or grandmother who has had breast cancer puts you at a higher risk. Our lifestyle plays a very important role as well. Women who consume alcohol on a daily basis are at a higher risk than those who do not. Women who smoke

and have poor eating habits are at an even higher risk than those who do not.

What can be done to prevent me from developing breast cancer? Although breast cancer can impact any woman, there are some preventative things we can do. We can see our doctor and get our mammogram screening done every year. We can take control of our weight management by eating healthy and exercising. We can limit our intake of alcohol. We can stay en-

gaged with health journals, such as dmars.com and other magazines that take a keen interest in our health as AfricanAmericans. I refer to reputable health professionals for my health articles. The information obtained for this article came from the writings of Nancy Kushner, MSN, RN and Dr. Robert Kushner. Put Your Pride Aside: Olympic Medalist Suffers from a Common Side Effect of Using Opioid Medication for Chronic Pain By d-mars.com News Provider

S

ix-time Olympic medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee is a world heptathlon record holder, Sports Illustrated’s “Greatest Female Athlete of the 20th Century,” a philanthropist working to instill a love of sports in local communities and a woman used to living life at full throttle. In fact, the only thing that slowed her down was knee and ankle pain caused by a grueling training regime and years of Olympic competition. Like millions of other Americans, she was prescribed opioid medication to treat her chronic pain. While she was on opioid therapy, she experienced opioid-induced constipation (OIC), a side effect she described to be very uncomfortable. Joyner-Kersee is not only speaking out on behalf of others with OIC, but

also encouraging them to put their pride aside and share their experience with their family, friends and healthcare provider. “After taking prescribed opioid treatment, I became constipated frequently – but I tried to ignore it,” says JoynerKersee. “As an athlete, you try to control everything you do, so when something is not right in your body, it’s hard to come to terms with it.” Most importantly, constipation prevented Joyner-Kersee from doing what she loves; she found herself becoming sluggish and doing less physically because of the pain and discomfort she was experiencing. Despite being in pain, feeling bloated and unlike her regular self, Joyner-Kersee says she didn’t mention anything to family, friends or her healthcare provider because she was in denial and felt embarrassed.

“Constipation isn’t exactly a conversation starter or something I wanted to talk about,” Joyner-Kersee says. “But it was taking such an emotional and physical toll that I finally had to work up the nerve to talk to my physician. It wasn’t until then that I learned I was experiencing what is called opioid-induced constipation or OIC.” Symptoms of OIC may include reduced bowel movement frequency, straining, incomplete evacuation, and hard or dry stools. People suffering from opioid-induced constipation may also complain that they feel bloated or are experiencing abdominal pain and have difficulty producing a bowel movement. Sufferers may also feel like they need to use the bathroom but are unable to pass a bowel movement. After receiving her diagnosis, JoynerKersee did her own research. “I learned that OIC is its own type of

constipation and can last for as long as I take opioids for my pain. Once I understood the condition, I talked to my physician about my treatment options,” Joyner-Kersee says. She also suggests opening up to friends and family about OIC. “I understand that OIC may not be a topic people feel comfortable discussing, but my advice is to put your pride aside and talk to your physician. With something as personal as OIC, it really helps me to have a support system and people I can talk to.” If you think that you or someone you care for may be suffering from OIC, talk to your healthcare provider. For more information about OIC, visit www.ohisee. com. Through personal stories, expert advice, and educational resources, this community aims to help OIC sufferers and their caregivers better understand and manage this uncomfortable condition. – BPT

Suffering from Pain? You’re Not Alone

M

Dr. Sterling L. Carter Contributing Writer

ost of us can name a time when we were in physical pain, but for 60% of Americans, pain is something people deal with on a regular basis. In a poll conducted by ABC News, USA Today and Stanford University Medical Center, more than half of the respondents said they suffer from chronic or recurrent pain. Chronic pain is defined as ongoing pain that has lasted for at least three months. Unfortunately, many of those surveyed also said that their pain interferes with their ability to take part in normal activities, their mood and their overall enjoyment of life. According to the survey, the most common source of pain is the back, which accounted for 25% of the pain reported. The next most frequently reported pain was knee pain, followed by headaches, shoulder pain and leg pain. Men between 30 and 49 years of age were the most likely to have back pain, perhaps because their bodies are aging a bit, but they’re still very active. However, women under the age of 50 reported that headaches or migraine pain were the

most common sources of their pain. But, after age 50, back pain led for both men and women. With so many people in pain, what can be done to ease their suffering? Well, most of the survey participants, 84% said they’ve tried over-the-counter drugs to treat their pain, and 81% have tried home remedies like heating pads and ice packs. The next most frequently used treatments were prescription drugs, prayer and bed rest. 51% said that prescription drugs and prayer worked very well, and that was the most highly rated of the treatments!

AN ALTERNATIVE TO DRUGS: It seems many Americans also have some concern about taking prescription drugs on a frequent basis. Over 25% said they worry about serious health risks painkillers may cause. If you’re one of the 60% suffering from pain, your physical therapist may hold the key to a safe and effective solution. Many conditions respond very well to various treatments used by physical therapists, including exercise therapy. In fact, those suffering from back and knee pain stand an excellent chance of improving their conditions through exercises aimed at strengthening the muscles supporting the back or knee. Best of all, physical therapy is safe and there are no side effects-except for your good health! Be sure to contact your local physical therapist to determine if physical therapy is the choice for you. If you don’t know of a good physical therapist, call me and I will recommend someone in your area. To find out more about Dr. Sterling L. Carter, please call (281) 240-3140 or visit www.sterlingtherapy.com.

How Crooked Teeth and a Misaligned Bite Can Affect Your Overall Health (to stabilize the new position of teeth) will be all that's needed to correct the problem. Removal of one or more teeth may be required if overcrowding is the main problem. For most people, braces are necessary to correct the problem. In rare and extreme cases, such as an extreme overbite or underbite, an operation is necessary.

hat Come With Crooked Teeth and Misaligned Bites?

Crooked teeth and misaligned bites can: •  Interfere with proper chewing •  Make keeping teeth clean more of a challenge, increasing the risk of tooth decay and cavities and gingivitis •  Strain the teeth, jaws and muscles, increasing the risk of breaking a tooth •  Make people feel self-conscious about their appearance and affect their self-esteem

How Do I Know if My Teeth Are Crooked or My Bite Is Misaligned? Your dentist can determine if your teeth are crooked and bite misaligned through a routine examination of your mouth, teeth, jaw and facial appearance. Your dentist will look for the following signs: •  Abnormal alignment of your teeth •  Abnormal appearance of your face •  Difficulty or discomfort when chewing or biting •  Speech difficulties, including a lisp Your dentist will usually refer you to an orthodontist – a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of crooked teeth and misaligned jaws.

What Tests Can I Expect at the Dentist? The orthodontist will likely take X-rays, photographs of your face and teeth impressions to determine if and what type of treatment is needed. X-rays provide information on the position of your teeth and roots and if any teeth have yet to come through the gums. Special cephalometrics or panoramic X-rays show the relationship of the teeth to the jaws and the jaws to the head. Your orthodontist may also want to take regular photographs of your face to further examine the relationship between your teeth, jaws and head. Finally, impressions may be made of your teeth. This is done by having you bite down on a material that is later used to create an exact copy of your teeth.

What Treatments Fix Crooked Teeth and Misaligned Bites?

Once a diagnosis is made, your orthodontist can decide the best treatment for you. For some people, a removable retainer

We don't think too much about our teeth until we have a toothache or some other painful issue going on in our mouth. If you are experiencing pain or health problems in other areas of your body, which can range from insomnia to dizziness to headaches, thinking a little more about your teeth, especially if you have misaligned teeth, can bring about the discovery, root cause and cure for your health problems. Misaligned teeth (i.e., crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, broken or missing teeth, improperly fitting bridges, etc.) can cause a wide range of health problems including insomnia, dizziness, headaches, ear aches, facial pain, neck pain, jaw clicking and pain when chewing. Misaligned teeth can cause problems with posture, which will lead to even more health issues like joint pain and low back pain. How is it possible that misaligned teeth, or even just one misaligned tooth can bring about such a wide range of health problems and pain? Any misalignment in your teeth will cause your jaw joint to be misaligned. The jaw joint is the highest joint in our skeletal system. A misaligned jaw joint will produce a 'trickle down' effect and impact the other joints below it in our bodies. Misaligned teeth do not fit together properly when chewing. The surrounding muscles and joints have to work harder to compensate for the misaligned teeth so they will work to chew your food. When facial and jaw muscles are tensed at unusual angles for chewing, this places stress on the jaw joint, which continues the muscle tensing and joint stress cycle down throughout other parts of our bodies. The health problems and pain caused from misaligned teeth may stay localized, as in the cases of temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), which presents with mild to severe jaw joint pain, jaw clicking and restricts the mouth from opening up fully. Worn down teeth and problems with prior cosmetic dentistry work such as bridges or crowns can also be caused from misaligned teeth. Insomnia and clenching or grinding worn down teeth and problems with prior cosmetic dentistry work such as bridges or crowns can also be caused from misaligned teeth. Insomnia and clenching or grinding teeth during sleep can also be caused from misaligned teeth. The unnatural tensing of jaw muscles to compensate for misaligned teeth leads to other body muscles tens-

ing when they should be in a relaxed state while sleeping, which will deprive you of a good night's sleep. Ear aches and/or dizziness can be due to the jaw joint being out of its natural alignment, because the jaw has had to compensate for misaligned teeth. Headaches, facial pain and neck pain are often caused by overworked jaw muscles. The stress on this muscle group can lead to posture problems when we try to find a position in which to hold our heads to alleviate the pain. The misalignment that started with the teeth can trickle down into the lower back muscles, hip and leg joints. The connection between misaligned teeth and various other health problems and body pain is recognized in the health

care industry. Specialized treatment by a newly established and growing field of dentistry called neuromuscular dentistry offers hope and help to those who may have been suffering previously undiagnosed health problems due to misaligned teeth. Neuromuscular dentistry offers pain relief without surgery or invasive procedures if the pain or health problems you are experiencing stem from misaligned teeth. The Top 3 Things Your Dermatologist Wants You to Know By d-mars.com News Provider

M

any of us can relate to these scenarios: It’s the morning of a big presentation or a special event, and all of a sudden, bumps or pimples appear on your face; add a glass of wine later in the day and your cheeks take on a bright red color, beyond what could be considered a rosy glow. These occurrences can be stressful for anyone. But for an estimated 16 million Americans, they are more than just occasional beauty concerns – these may be symptoms of rosacea, a common, but often misunderstood, inflammatory skin condition that can have a deep emotional impact. To arm consumers with the facts about rosacea and empower them to take action, Galderma Laboratories, L.P., and the National Rosacea Society (NRS) bring you an educational campaign called Break Up with Your Makeup. “Many patients will initially come to my office thinking that they have acne or another skin condition, which they’ve been incorrectly treating with over-the-counter remedies and attempting to conceal with heavy makeup,” said Dr. Doris Day, nationally recognized dermatologist, campaign spokesperson and Galderma consultant. “Once I tell them that they have rosacea and

that harsh cleansers and some makeups can in fact aggravate their symptoms, they’re often surprised.” A national survey of over 500 rosacea patients and 300 dermatologists, conducted in partnership between the NRS and Galderma, revealed some gaps in patient awareness of rosacea symptoms and triggers and concerns from dermatologists treating the condition. To help people with rosacea get more control over their condition, Dr. Doris Day shared the top three things she wants those who have rosacea, or think they might have it, to know: 1.  Deciphering the Symptoms. With nearly half of rosacea patients (49%) mistaking their rosacea for acne prior to diagnosis, it’s no wonder that 40% of dermatologists believe that their patients have put off visiting them because they thought their symptoms could be controlled with acne treatments. However, research has shown that there is no connection between acne and rosacea and the two disorders require different treatment. As a general rule for distinguishing acne and rosacea, Dr. Day suggests keeping an eye out for blackheads and persistent facial redness, as the first only occurs in acne, while the latter is specific to rosacea. But only a dermatologist can make a proper diagnosis, so be sure to schedule your appointment. 2.  What’s in a Trigger? When it

comes to having a clear understanding of their condition, many dermatologists notice knowledge gaps in their rosacea patients; almost half (47%) worry that their patients simply don’t know enough about what can trigger their symptoms. And their concerns may not be unfounded: 60% of rosacea patients don’t believe it’s possible to prevent symptoms by making changes to their diet or lifestyle, even though things like cheese, choco-

late, red wine, spicy foods and stress can all act as triggers. Dr. Day suggests patient keep a rosacea diary for a few days to track what may trigger flare-ups. 3.  Stop Concealing, Start Treating! 41% of physicians fear that their patients simply cover up their rosacea instead of treating it; and it’s a logical concern given that 77 percent of makeup-wearing patients say they wear more makeup now than before their diagnosis. However it’s important for patients to visit their dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment if symptoms persist. For example, a dermatologist can prescribe medication that, along with healthy skincare and diet/lifestyle management, can help you keep your symptoms under control. Galderma offers a comprehensive portfolio of rosacea solutions that address a variety of frustrating symptoms. Galderma currently markets topical Mirvaso® Gel for the persistent facial redness associated with rosacea; systemic Oracea® Capsules, the only oral papulopustular rosacea treatment approved by the FDA; and Soolantra® Cream, a once-daily, antibioticfree product indicated for the treatment of inflammatory lesions, or bumps and pimples, of rosacea. If you suspect you may have rosacea, take action today, and visit your dermatologist to discuss a healthy skincare regimen that’s right for you, which may include prescription treatment. – BPT

Three Serious Medical Conditions Associated with Hearing Loss By d-mars.com News Provider

T

hink you might have hearing loss? It turns out procrastinating about that hearing test appointment may put more than just your hearing at risk. Primary care doctors now know hearing loss may be a symptom of another, more serious medical condition. Over the past decade, studies have linked hearing loss to three concerning co-morbidities:

Cardiovascular disease Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Poor cardiovascular health causes inadequate blood flow throughout the body. "One of the first signs of a problem is blood vessel trauma to your inner ear resulting in damage to fragile hearing nerves," says Dr. Patricia Ramirez, an audiologist and trainer at Siemens Hearing Instruments, Inc. "The outcome is hearing loss, particularly in the lower frequencies." A recent study showed a "significant association" between low-frequency hearing loss and the dangerous effects of cardiovascular disease, including strokes, coronary artery disease and heart attacks. Because of this, you should immediately report it to your primary care doctor if you have a hearing test that indicates hearing loss – especially in the low. He or she may recommend a com-

plete cardiovascular work-up.

Dementia Despite the results of multiple studies linking hearing loss to the onset of dementia, many people are unaware that untreated hearing loss poses a threat to cognitive health. But studies have shown the more profound the hearing loss, the greater the possibility of cognitive decline. Why is hearing loss a likely factor in the development of dementia in some patients? Theories include: •  The same, as-yet-to-be discovered cause of dementia may also cause or contribute to hearing loss •  Straining to hear and understand exhausts your mind and inhibits its ability to function at peak performance

•  People who cannot hear well or have difficulty hearing in crowds, often avoid socializing. Isolation is an established contributor to mental decline. Additional studies have associated hearing loss with more rapid brain shrinkage, particularly affecting areas of the brain responsible for processing speech, sound, memory and sensory integration. Early diagnosis and medical intervention can help slow the progression of dementia in some patients. Treatment with hearing aids not only helps improve your hearing – it might stave off or even slow down the development of dementia.

Diabetes People with diabetes are two times

more likely to suffer hearing loss than those without the condition. Diabetes actually encompasses a group of diseases associated with high blood glucose levels caused by an inability to produce or use insulin properly. Nearly 26 million Americans have a form of diabetes. Research measuring the ability to hear at the low, mid and high-frequencies in both ears, found a link between diabetes and hearing loss at all frequencies, with a somewhat stronger association in the high-frequency range, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. It appears the damage is more common in patients with Type 2 diabetes, which represents approximately 95 percent of cases in the U.S. Another significant study tested 5,000 plus individuals and found more than 30 percent of those diagnosed with diabetes also experienced hearing loss, according to the NIDCD.

What you should do if you think you have hearing loss No one wants to be told "you have hearing loss," but ignoring an obvious problem will not make it go away. In fact, delaying treatment could make the problem worse and potentially endanger your overall health. Finding out you have hearing loss allows a hearing care professional to fit you with appropriate hearing aid amplification to help improve your hearing and provide you with test results that could alert your primary physician if you have serious health concerns. - BPT
