Message From the President & CEO MR. D-MARS “From the beginning, being a colored, a negro, a black, an African-American child, growing up in Mississippi, my prayer was, for as long as I can remember, "God use me, use me, use this life. I don’t know what the future holds for me but I know that there is a vision for my life that is greater than my imagination can hold. Use me, use me. What would you have me to do?” And that dream, that desire, that prayer, brought me somehow to television. And to be able to use this tremendous vehicle of television, to go into people’s homes and somehow be able to touch their lives and to be the beacon that Barbara was for me, to be a light of hope and understanding, to share some sense of illumination that maybe sometimes reflects people’s lives and sometimes opens them up to themselves is the greatest blessing God could have given me.”

Shawn A. Taylor 2018 LIVING LEGEND
S
hawn Taylor, a proud Purdue graduate (class of 82’) was raised by a single mother of four in the projects of the crime-infested Southside of Chicago. By some accounts, he should be in prison, on drugs or dead. Instead Mr. Taylor created his own course and now stands among some of the most elite businessmen in Houston, a feat he credits to tenacity, discipline and the support of a loving mother and numerous mentors. In his high school years, Mr. Taylor was a National Honor Society student, captain of the football team and a decorated athlete. After high school, he attended Purdue University on the Dr. Cornell A. Bell Business Opportunity Program to study accounting. He continued to excel academically, graduating with Distinction (Top 10% of his class) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. Mr. Taylor began his professional career in Dallas at the world’s largest accounting firm, Arthur Andersen, LLP. During his 10 years with the firm, Mr. Taylor was instrumental in leading the Dallas office in recruitment and retention of minority employees at a rate never achieved by any other office in the firm. Although he experienced steady success in his career, he wanted to create a new business model that would lead him to attain economic wealth. The business turning point in his life came when, in 1995, he decided to pursue entrepreneurism. Through his relationships with the executives at PepsiCo, he set forth on a path to become a Taco Bell franchisee. After creating a business plan and resigning from Arthur Andersen, he started his own company, Family EATs Limited Partnership (FELP) and acquired, owned, developed, and operated as many as 33 Taco Bell locations in the Houston Market with sales approaching $30 million and over 500 employees. In typical Mr. Taylor fashion, he was selected for several positions within the Taco Bell franchise system, including serving on the Franchise Management Advisory

Council. In 2007 he decided to take advantage of the demand for Taco Bell franchises and market opportunities and successfully sold FELP. For the next six years, he invested his time in non-profit organizations focused on education and supporting college and high school age students. Mr. Taylor has never been one to shy away from a great opportunity, and in 2011, he aligned with a group of prominent business professionals to purchase the Houston Astros Major League Baseball team. Mr. Taylor sold his interest in the team in 2017 but has remained involved with the organizations as Special Advisor to the Chairman. He served on the board of trustees for the Astros Foundation, and was the Chairman for the Annual Astros Golf Classic, which raised over $550,000
in the first (2) years. In early 2013, he and his partner became a franchisee with the Zaxby’s Houston, LLC, a multiunit restaurant franchise. They currently have eight (8) Zaxby’s open in the Greater Houston Area. Zaxby’s currently operates more than 800 locations in 14 states. With a proven record of success under his belt, he enjoys speaking to students about his humble beginnings and teaching them about maximizing opportunities regardless of their surroundings and/or circumstances. He also serves on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations, including KIPP Academy and the Finance Committee for Memorial Hermann Healthcare System and the Dean’s Advisory Counsel for Purdue University’s Krannert Graduate School of Business. In 2012 he was awarded the Entrepreneur
of the Year Award from Purdue’s Krannert School of Management and was the 2015/226th Purdue University Graduation Commencement Speaker. Mr. Taylor is the proud father of son, Austin (2014 Harvard graduate) and daughter, Erin, (2016 University of Colorado graduate). Shawn A. 2018 TRAILBLAZER
M
ary Griffin displays the vocal prowess, attitude and range of a true ingénue. (Billboard Magazine) With a powerfully unique voice and a definitive sound, Griffin consistently delivers soul stirring performances that captivate audiences around the world. Using her past as a spring board, Griffin channels memories into melodies that are proud and strong. Her rich melodic sound and exciting performance style are rooted in the story of a pastor’s daughter with a passion for singing good music. With Curb Records, Griffin began singing for Movie soundtracks and was even featured in the movie Studio 54 where she portrayed the artist Amii Stewart and sang “Knock on Wood” for the soundtrack. She performed “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” with Frankie Valli for the closing credits of Conspiracy Theory. Mary also sang “I Wanna Get Back With You” written by Diane Warren, for the movie Driven starring Sylvester Stallone and Burt Reynolds. Other notable movies that feature Griffin’s voice include: a duet with Benny Mardones, Coyote Ugly and Ballistic X vs Sever where she sang the end credit song “Anytime”. After returning from Europe promoting and shooting the video for “Ain’t No Living Without You” by Louis Biancaniello and Sam Waters from Color Me Bad, she released “I Surrender” which was then covered by Celine Dion. “I Surrender” was an instant success with Celine, and further drove Griffin’s writing and singing out front with her recording of the song on her album “Purified”, released in 2002. Bowers strived to keep their prices where the everyday woman could afford it. The prices of their bundles haven’t risen since they were selling them out of the trunks of their cars, despite now having 6 locations across the US with over 30 employees. In 2015, shortly after She’s Happy Hair skyrocketed to the top, Broadnax started two new companies: Happy Me Tee, LLC (HMT) and GGB Trucking, LLC. HMT was founded by Broadnax and his wife, Britne Broadnax. “HMT was started for us to be able to express and celebrate ourselves and our children.” The company was born with the signature 3D Tee when Broadnax and his wife took a photo of their son at a little league football game and placed it on a shirt and all other parents went crazy. They then decided to start HMT out of the garage of their home, and now have a brick and mortar location. GGB Trucking was founded by Broadnax and Maurice Atkins. It started with one Ram Dually and has since added various trailers for hauling, key staff members, and drivers as well as two more 18-wheelers. Outside of his busy life being a businessman and entrepreneur, Broadnax prides himself in the, philanthropy he and his team do in the community. His most recent and proudest project was having a black Santa at all six She’s Happy Hair locations across the US for their 4th Annual Free Pictures with Santa and Toy and Bike Giveaway, where they gave away free toys and bikes to underprivileged children, and gave them the chance to take a free picture with Santa. Broadnax also recently launched the She’s Happy Foundation aimed at helping under privileged youth.

In 2010, he embarked on another business venture with his father and created MyCampaignStaff.com, a full service political consulting firm that offered turn key political campaigns which included street teams, phone banks, civic engagements, and Get Out the Vote (GOTV) initiatives. In 2012 he restructured the company to focus on business development, government relations, and public affairs. Now known as The Donatto Group (TDG) the firm specializes in uncovering business opportunities as well as improving government and community relations for its clients. TDG’s portfolio of clients range from large multinational publicly traded companies to small startup companies in their infancy. Over the past few years the company has experienced exponential growth and aided their clients in acquiring millions of dollars in contracts. Jimmy Burner 2018 UP & COMING
A creative in every sense of the word, Burner created Jimmy Bolt - his musical moniker to differentiate his music from his fashion. His influence stretches far beyond the world of music. The son of the late Erwin Portis Sr., a musical director, creator and industry influencer, Jimmy Bolt adopted an early understanding of music and the industry that would become one of the driving forces behind his passion, determination and commitment to music. A student of the industry and an influencer in his own right, Jimmy Bolt spent the first two years in the music world as a student. Studying beats, analyzing sounds, referencing genres and penning word flows. For him, it was about mastery. Being able to master the craft was essential and influences like Sade’s mesmerizing vocal aesthetic and his father’s ear for range and production became the study guides. With over 20 songs, hidden in a square book with half-enclosed pages, and a plethora of ideas looming, Jimmy Bolt headed to the studio to pen Free Time, the introductory single in preparation of his highly anticipated album, “Finally Noticed”, slated for Spring 2018.

line and his daughter, Taylor, were two major factors in his life. The process in developing them were both mind boggling and life changing. Mr. Moore experienced homelessness for a period of five years. Having little family and no resources for support, he began sleeping in 24-hour restaurants, park benches, and in vacant cars. On some nights, Mr. Moore was able to sleep on couches in the homes of a few relatives, to each he continues to show gratitude. In order to support himself, Mr. Moore began to make his dreams of becoming a clothing designer and entrepreneur come to life. Putting pencil to paper, he began sketching various designs of the clothing pieces he wanted to create. He embraced all aspects of the fashion industry, from the young, hip-hop crowd to the chic and fashionable. His designs included jeans, t-shirts, vests, dresses, shoes, belts, purses and other accessories. In 2005, Mr. Moore took all of his savings from working various odd jobs and birthed his own business, Isaac & Moore. Being a young entrepreneur, he found it difficult to get financial support to keep the dream alive. Strategically, he organized, instrumented, financed, and showcased his fashions in his first fashion show. The hard work and sweat paid off, the show was an astounding success.

He and his sister slept in separate bunk beds, while his mother slept on a queen size mattress on the floor of a shotgun one bedroom duplex. Crime became a constant presence in Mr. Moore’s life.

“There’s power in prayer,” Mr. Moore states. “I’ve been out here on my own for a long time and God has kept me.” He continues “I‘m blessed to have even made it this far, especially when others expected me to fail or to follow in my parents footsteps.” Realizing that dreams can come true with hard work and dedication, Mr. Moore continues to pursue his goals and encouraging others to do the same. His motto in life is “If you want to make a difference, you have to do things differently.” In doing so, (you) will become the (wo)man you were born to be! After self-teaching about benefits of healthy eating he created his non GMO, no MSG, low sodium, health-beneficial spices that still bring back the memories from his grandmother’s kitchen. Daughtry’s company blew up faster than expected while blogging about his recipes on social media as recreation he went from never expecting to make a dime from his products, to being shot down by several store owners who said his spices were too basic for stores. Soulfitgrill seasonings became the first line of healthy spices to be sold in nutrition stores. Daughtry’s spices can now be found online, on the shelves of ten different stores, or in the spice cabinets of top athletes, fitness fans, those trying to watch their sodium intake, and many more. In 2017, Chaz designed and released “The Legend”, a kamodo style grill that he was inspired to create by the cooking techniques that he learned while studying abroad in China.
