APPROVALS PROCEDURE

Any usage of PETER RABBIT™ character names and likenesses must be approved in writing in advance of use. Creative approval is based on character design that (a) follows models and colors, (b) uses correct relationships between characters, (c) is appropriately integrated with products and advertisements, (d) uses the correct typefaces, and (e) complies with the Legal Guidelines in, and the Do’s and Don’ts section of, this Style Guide. The names and likenesses of PETER RABBIT™ characters, artwork and distinctive lettering are protected under copyright and/or trademark laws of the United States and countries around the world. Copyright protects, amongst other elements, the visual appearance and the script of, and materials derived from or based on, the PETER RABBIT™ animation. Trademarks are badges of origin and quality and must be used correctly and consistently. The following is a list of key PETER RABBIT™ trademarks:

Use a ™ symbol if a character name is used as a brand, product range title or product name. A ™ symbol is not necessary if referring to characters purely as characters in the animation. Trademarks should not be used as nouns or in the plural or possessive form – they are adjectives. Place a ™ symbol alongside the trademark, followed by an appropriate noun (except where a trademark is being used alone as a brand name), e.g.:

Approvals & legal guidelines

Always use full character names – e.g. Squirrel Nutkin, Dr Warren Bobtail, Mr Jeremy Fisher. Do not shorten or abbreviate character names or make up new names which contain one or more character names. See p.p.[136] and [138] for limited exceptions to this rule.

Distinguish word trademarks from surrounding text by use of a different font or lettering style or size and an initial capital letter/all capital letters – e.g. “We’re pleased to announce our new PETER RABBIT™ toy”.

•

Use a ™ symbol next to a trademark whenever used in a title and with the first and most prominent use of a trademark in the text of marketing materials, brochures, press releases, etc.

•

Do not use the ® symbol unless instructed to do so in writing by Nickelodeon.

•

The Show Logo has been created especially for the new PETER RABBIT™ animation. The logo must be used as the principal and most prominent branding on all merchandise and related materials. Please reproduce the Show Logo only in the colours specified. Only use the black/white version where colour printing/graphics are not available.

•

Please do not modify, alter, animate, morph or otherwise distort the perspective or dimensional appearance of any of the trademarks or imagery in this Style Guide. You may resize logos and images to fit your products, packaging and marketing materials, provided that: o All proportions, colours, elements and typefaces remain unchanged; o The marks/images are not illegible, distorted, or otherwise modified or obscured; and o The Color/Size Chart on p.[34] is observed.

Do not place trademarks on backgrounds that impair their readability. Except where used in a quote, permitted expression or body text, leave sufficient space between the trademark and any surrounding marks, text, graphics or visual elements to ensure that: o The trademarks stand alone, are legible and are not obscured in any way; o You do not create new or composite names, marks or logos by combining the trademarks with other elements; and o You do not create the impression that the item upon which the trade mark is place is co-branded.

A ™ symbol is not needed with the name BEATRIX POTTER if referring to her as an author/person, e.g. “Based on the works of Beatrix Potter”. A ™ symbol should be used when referring to the BEATRIX POTTER brand, e.g. A BEATRIX POTTER™ toy, though it is unlikely that such use will be needed for animation-related products.

Cotton-tail is an exception to the general guidelines above. We do not claim her name as, or use it as, a trademark and there are specific guidelines relating to the use of her name on products, packaging and marketing materials. Please seek further guidance from Nickelodeon if you wish to use the name Cotton-tail on your licensed products/marketing materials.
