DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH KEY CLUB .

. . . .

I joined my sophomore year, joined a committee, ran for secretary junior year then ran for president my . senior year. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME YOUR. CLUB’S PRESIDENT?

I decided to run for president because. . Key Club was something I was passionate about and wanted to do more. HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT YOUR TERM, WHAT DO YOU HOPE COMES OUT OF IT?

The term started off a little slow because of Covid restrictions, but we’re finally getting the ball rolling. I hope we’re able to achieve our service hour goal as well as reaching our PTP goal. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF MUSIC, ANY SONGS YOU LIKE RIGHT NOW?

I listen to mainly Indie Pop and K-Pop, but I’ve recently been obsessed with Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour album especially Brutal.

On August 31st, Alhambra Key Club’s first club meeting was held. As it was the club’s first in-person meeting in over a year due to the pandemic, Alhambra Top 5 officers (President Madison David (12), Vice Presidents Melanie Thongthai (12) & Athena Ngo (12), Secretary Emily Keath (11), and Treasurer Michelle La (11)) worked extra hard to plan a smooth meeting for everyone. They had to analyze how to hold the meeting without violating COVID-19 regulations set by Alhambra’s ASB. With help from advisor Mr. Antonio Kim, Alhambra Key pulled off an incredibly exciting and safe reunion, which became a treat to all members alike. The meeting was hosted in Mr. Kim’s large classroom, where members sat in spaced rows and stood in clear areas in consideration of social distancing standards. Sergeant of Arms, or SOA, Isabella Lau (11) kicked off the meeting by asking everyone to stand and repeat the Key Club pledge. All members said the pledge loudly and proudly, happy to be together after an incredibly long time online. President Madison reintroduced the Top 5, which was followed by loud cheering from the room in support of yet another great leadership team. Vice Presidents Melanie & Athena also went over services for the upcoming month, both virtual and in-person. They spoke of the Bean Bean Bean and Rice Rice game, as well as the Ocean Hero search engine, as fun, online volunteering sources to earn hours for the month. They also gave a recap on the Dodgers Run in-person volunteering opportunity, which occurred on Saturday, August 14th and received great participation. Aside from this, Alhambra PTA requested the presence of Key members to volunteer at the snack booth during home football games, which also counted as a source of hours. Many members were excited to get a head start on all activities given. The successful meeting ended off with the announcement of cabinet members and new members. Each member received a sash that stated their names (and cabinet positions), which served as a heartfelt welcome into the club.

School’s back and key club’s ready for their first in person service! As a little warm welcome for going back into school, key club held a library service where members were able to help Gabrielino’s librarian and interact with each other after months of quarantine. The key club members were excited to sign up and be able to assist our very own school while obtaining hours. This library service consisted of organizing textbooks by subject and assisting our school’s librarian for her first week of school as well. Even though the first week can always be a bit challenging, it was no match for key club members to be eager to sign up. Members were able to sign up on a few designated days and receive a little reward of cookies at the end of the service. This was the most eventful way for us to get comfortable with coming back. Gabrielino Key Club can’t wait to attend more in person services and help out our community in the near future!

During the month of August, Mark Keppel Key Club members wanted to become active while earning money for a charity of their choice. In the midst of a pandemic, we figured that we should try to go out a little more and enjoy the fresh air. A better way to enjoy that fresh air would have to be earning money for a charity of their choice while being active outside. This service opportunity aims to give members a chance to really go outside and maintain their physical health by walking, running, biking, and other activities, all while earning money for a charity of their choice. The Charity Miles app has multiple charities that members can choose from and it provides a way for members to donate to those charities without having to put in their own money. For every 5 miles that a member achieved, they were able to earn an hour of service.

On August 12, 2021, Rosemead Key Clubbers had the opportunity to assist with the LA Dodger Foundation Run. The marathon event was the last service event of the summer before the school year began. The service event lasted from 3:00pm through 7:45pm. Volunteers were required to sign a waiver form, medical release form, and a covid waiver form, as well a needing to wear their mask at all times. During LA Dodger Foundation Run, a few of the volunteers prepared bags for the marathon runners that included a shirt, postcard, and a Dodgers bobblehead. Others distributed pins, gave directions and answered anyone with questions. During the break, all helpers received pizza, snacks, and a drink. Towards the end of the shift when all the marathon runners received their bag filled with goodies, all the volunteers took a group picture.

For the month of August, Schurr’s Key Club participated in club rush during our school’s registration period. We spent 2 days, August 9th-10th, gathering new club members. We were able to recruit around 60 new sign-ups during this period. We also held an online informational meeting on August 23rd introducing our new members to the club and our officers. Our president, Chloe Liu, then spent most of the meeting going over what our club is and what we do. We achieved a greater number of member attendance at a Division Council Meeting, which is a big deal for our club. We are hoping to increase this member participation on the club and division level.

During September, Wilson Key Club offered two service opportunities. The first service opportunity is called Pause For. Pause For is an app where you take time off your phone to help raise money for charities that help provide hot meals, plant trees, and animal vaccinations! This app allows those who participate to stay on task while also helping the charity of their choice. The second service opportunity is called Save the Trees. Save the Trees is an app that helps plant trees online and in real life! Every $2 this app makes, a tree will be planted! This is a great start for Wilson Key Club members to help make the world a better place. Division 10 South also hosted their first in-person DCM since the start of the pandemic. Two of our members, Kelly and Vivian, were at the event. It's been a while since we all saw our division in real life!

Throughout all of August, the Bosco Tech Key Club has been busier than the previous month with the following events: Services: In this last month, Bosco Tech held a couple of services for its Key Club members: - Ocean Hero Search Engine, participants simply had to add Ocean Hero to their search browsers and after 5 searches, they would receive 1 bottle (For every five searches they did, the organization would collect one ocean-bound plastic bottle). After earning 10 bottles, they would earn 1 hour worth of service. Each participant could earn up to a maximum of 5 hours worth of service. - “Pause For” productivity app. This was an app that participants downloaded and to help reform students from being on their phones all afternoon to doing their schoolwork. By downloading the "Pause For" App, participants were able to raise money for various charities. Participants who submitted screenshots of their "Profile" section of the app would receive hours for their efforts.
