CLUBClub RECAP Recap Bellflower | jackie cardenas Hi Key Clubbers! With summer only a month away, Bellflower High School's Key Club was ready to end the school year with a bang! We hosted our school's blood drive which was done no other by the American Red Cross organization, a non-profit humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance and disaster relief in the United States. At Bellflower High School, nearly 100 students gave successful blood donations and half of those gave successful Power Red Donations, where two units of red blood cells were donated during one donation. As summer nears, Bellflower High School Key Club will work our best in planning fundraising events and create some new club events for the future.

Cabrillo | Alexander Pang

This month we’ve been recruiting more members to join our club and have had 13 new members join. We are currently creating posters and other decorations to put around our school for the next school year in hopes to catch other students interest to join Cabrillo key club. Our board members and I plan to attend OTC along with any other key clubbers that are interested in attending. We’re also planning to attend the upcoming service events for the month of June.

Gahr | krezzia basilio

HI-YA ninjas! Gahr Key Club has had a very eventful month in terms of service and social bonding. Gahr attended the annual Bellflower Kiwanis Banquet and awarded our deserving members with awards. We also had a joint bonfire bonding at Huntington Beach with our neighboring schools in our school's district; D30S' Whitney High School and D13N's Cerritos High School. At this "Olympic Beach Bonfire" many members socialized as they competed in the "olympics" and ate hot dogs next to the bonfire. As for service events, Gahr members participated in Mary Bragg Elementary's Carnival, and the USA Track & Field event at Cerritos College. We also had our end of the year meeting where we played our Olympic Beach Bonfire Montage and our Senior Goodbyes.

Jordan | bianca solis

Hey Ninjas! This month, Jordan has been more active in attending events! We have briefly attended LB Pride, May DCM, and even successfully presented our Eudaemonia Project at our Michelle Obama Library. We hope to attend even more events!

Rachel borje | Millikan

Hey ninjas, happy summer! We're easing into summer by planning future beach clean ups and other fun outdoor volunteer opportunities. On Saturday May 19, 2018 our division D13S went to the Filipino Festival at Silverado Park in Long Beach for their first annual festival ever. At this festival they had soo many traditional and fusion Filipino foods, desserts, and even drinks. They also had amazing music and performers such as actors, singers, dance groups (which had our fellow D19S member Nicho), local artists, and so much more. At this event the Kiwanis had their very own booth and was handled by the advisors and some club members. The Kiwanis booth had face painting stations run by some of our members including myself for the kids and adults who came by. Also some of our alumni members came by and helped and hung out with us too. With this booth we advertised what key club was all about and how you should join to help the community and the people around you. This first annual Filipino festival was amazing and hope they would invite us again in the future to show how much we care and how committed we are to the community.

The Long Beach Pride Festival and Parade has been a tradition in our community since 1984, when it was first hosted by Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride, Inc. On Saturday, May 20th, we joined in the 35th annual Long Beach Pride Parade to aid in this celebration of inclusivity, diversity, and love and support for the LGBTQ+ community. This year’s parade drew thousands of attendees and began at 10:30am or so, though our volunteers ended their shifts around 1:00pm. Main duties we fulfilled included directing floats, marchers, and performers along the parade route, in addition to helping in clean up as the parade came to an end. Other than that, we cheered for those who participated in the parade and just enjoyed the event in general. We as a division have volunteered at this event before and hope do so again in the future. Thank you to all who came to help! We’re grateful D13S was able to take part in the celebration of pride and acceptance in our community!

The Wrigley River run was very enjoyable. On Saturday, June 1st, together we helped set it up, and helped clean up the event afterwords. It was extremely fun joining this event, along with clubs from Division 19 North and Division 13 North. The event went very smoothly and turned out to be awesome. Not to mention seeing other friends we’ve made at other multidivision events.

On Wednesday, May 16th members of Gahr Key Club alongside with members of D30S’ Whitney Key Club participated in Nixon Academy’s Annual Carnival. Members were assigned specific booths to work at alongside with a partner. Some of the booths consisted of games such as Alley-Oops, Bottle Ring Toss, Can Can, 5 Pin Bowling, Knock-a-Block, 7-11, Stand It, Teddy Bear Toss, Tic-Tac-Toe, Treasure Chest, Flap Attack, and some even worked at the Popcorn Booth. Volunteers guided kids with the respected carnival booth game and rewarded them their prize if won. When prizes ran out, members had to communicate with the parent volunteers in order to organize and refill them. This elementary school carnival event was a great experience for members to become closer to their community as they talked and communicated with a wide variety of people in our local area. One member even talked about how fun it was when kids finally got the prize they had been trying to get for so long.

On June 2nd, members from Gahr Key Club volunteered at the USA Track and Field Meet at Cerritos College. Members had different shifts to work at as the event was an all-day, two-day event. Members were assigned a certain field event whether it was long-jump, high-jump, or javelin. After being assigned an event, they had to wait until the results for each age group was done. While waiting for each age group to be done, members refilled up the field members’ water. They then took the paper results along with the kids to the canopy where the winners were being recognized. The results were then taken to be officially inputted into the system; once inputted the first, second, and third place winners were awarded their medals. Despite the intense heat that day, members still took the time to serve their local community and help out at this meet. Overall it was great experience to help and see people who have trained long hours for this event.

The Mental Health Initiation Project organized by Marco Zaldana took place at the Michelle Obama Library on May 29. The presentation aimed to raise awareness of mental illnesses, more physical problems such as domestic violence, and the various ways you can reach out for help or provide guidance to someone who needs it. Guest speakers from the Women's Shelter of Long Beach and the Trauma Recovery Center attended the presentation, providing information about their organization as well as methods for providing assistance in the forms of hotlines, resources, and advice on where you can go for help. A workshop was hosted as well, with the purpose of providing resources to people who need it or don't know how to get help. Pamphlets and brochures with information regarding resources to other organizations were provided.

On Friday, May 25th, Gahr Key Club participated in helping Mary Bragg Elementary School at their very own carnival. Some assigned jobs were to help set any tables, chairs, work the game booths, pass out small gifts to the children that attended, monitor the carnival, and help work the inflatables when a parent was not available. For the game booths, they were all fairly easy to earn and win a prize. This allowed a wide spread of children to try other games available and made their carnival experience more enjoyable. Overall, this was a great turnout for Bragg Elementary and Gahr Key Club. It made the parents’ jobs to be much easier and opened up many volunteer opportunities for Gahr. This event allowed the volunteers to connect with their own community and fellow Key Clubbers.

On June 9th, the ninjas had a blast helping out at Ability First’s Spring Formal! They escorted, served, and danced with guests and helped the staff with set up and clean up. Ability First is an organization for people with developmental disabilities and their families. The organization aims to “look beyond disabilities, focus on capabilities and expand possibilities.” The Spring Formal was one way of engaging members of Ability First by giving them an opportunity to dress up and dance the night away. The ninjas successfully helped with this by socializing with guests and having fun!
