Divisional Articles CAMS As it is approaching the holiday seasons, CAMS Key Club is especially busy with service. Over the past three weekends, Key Clubbers have been actively participating in service projects ranging from working at a processing warehouse to working in the kitchen. Despite the early hours, large groups of excited members gathered at the meeting locations and were ready to brighten the world with their efforts. Just in time for the Christmas season, the club participated in one of its most popular projects once again – Operation Christmas Child, a project in which shoeboxes are packed with toys, pencils, toothbrushes, and anything that a child in third-world countries would like for Christmas. With hundreds of dollars worth of goodies to pack, members had plenty of materials to place into the boxes. In collaboration with Gardena Key Club, both clubs were able produce over a hundred shoeboxes. But producing the boxes isn’t enough. During the Thanksgiving holiday break, over 20 members spent their morning at a processing warehouse in Irvine, checking each box that passes by them to ensure that its contents are appropriate to be delivered to a child’s open arms. By the end of the day, the club was able to process hundreds of presents to be delivered to Bangladesh. In the next week, members assembled at the Food Bank of Southern California. There, they separated boxes of toys into good and bad piles. The good toys would be donated to families in need whereas the unusable toys would be shredded in order to use the cotton stuffing as quilts. Though some of the toys were cold, wet, and moldy, members continued to work until there weren’t any toys left to sort. Key Clubbers were so efficient that the food bank had ran out of jobs for the volunteers, and thus, the project ended slightly early.

Most recently, the City of Gardena held a community event in which members aided with serving attendees and helping children with arts and crafts. At Breakfast with Santa, families enjoyed the company of Santa Claus while enjoying their breakfasts served by cheerful volunteers. After all were full, the children headed towards the arts and crafts rooms where they could decorate cupcakes to bring home, make jingle bracelets and snowflake ornaments, and construct reindeer sleeves for a chocolate bar. Volunteers were kept on their toes as energetic children visited the rooms throughout the morning. In the end, the hard workers were rewarded with a complimentary plate of breakfast as the children quietly watched a puppet show.

El Segundo

Gardena

Member of the Month: In the month of December, we had our biggest fundraising event, our annual carwash. During the whole event, one of our members, Samantha Htike, stayed and helped throughout the whole day. Although she got wet and dirty by the end of the day, she still stayed, ready to help. Samantha Htike donated both her time and energy to help El Segundo Key Club.

Gardena High School Key Club has been working hard to get ready for the holidays. In the month of December GHS Key Club has worked with 186th Street School for their Holiday Celebrations. On December 9th GHS Key Club helped at the school’s annual Family Craft Night. At this event we had 20 Key Clubbers work together to help all of the kids at the school with their crafts projects. We had three to four Key Clubbers at each of the three Arts and Crafts project stations. We had three members helping the kids that got in line to take a picture with Santa Clause and the rest of the member where outside selling Hot Chocolate, Nachos, chips, cookies, and Children’s books. The members had a great time working with all of the kids that night and the Event Coordinator of the school and told me that all the parents had good comments to make about the Key Club volunteers. After that Gardena Key Club decided to spread holiday cheer at our own school. So on December 15th from 3:30pm to 6:30pm Gardena Key Club made Happy Holiday cards for all of the teachers and staff at Gardena High School. We put together over 120 cards for all of the staff and teachers at our school. The Gardena Key Club board has put together a Winter Break Challenge for the members to participate in. Members are very excited to participate in these events and the board and myself are excited to compete against the members to see who is going to win.

Events: On December 3rd, we had a car wash to raise money for the club. The car wash started from 10:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the evening. We only accepted donations and did not charge anyone for our service. At the end of the day, we received about $500 in donations.

A successful event that the club had that was successful was Divine Design in Beverly Hills. Project Angel Food is a unique program that provides a free-meal delivery program that serves’s men, women, and children with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses in the Los Angeles County. Project Angel Food cooks and delivers more than 13,000 meals to people in need in the community. All donations and purchases made at Divine Design directly funds Project Angel Food’s meal-delivery program. King Drew felt honored to participate in such a great opportunity that many other people get to do. King Drew participated the day of the set up at Robinson’s May and the day that the merchandise was at 70% off!

Lawndale Key club recently had a Social to get to know each other. We had had a special guest and Tamara Garcia (Gardena Key Club Historian) showed up and participated. The social was an overall success. For December we have been helping at Anderson Elementary’s Holiday Gift Baskets where we pack canned food for the families in need.

King Drew: Member of the Month

Lawndale: Member of the Month For our Member of the Month, we chose Mia Bowers. She is one of the kindest and most responsible members in Key Club. We see her at every weekly key club meeting. She also attended Fall Rally and was very spirited! She also dressed the part.

For the month of December, King Drew’s Key Club is proud to announce Yamilet Lopez as member of the month. Yamilet has decided to take actions from the first club meeting the club had. She took the step to run for treasurer when no one else would. She has become a dedicated member ever since attending the regional training conference. She always does her best to make sure she attends every possible event the club hosts. She always goes out of her way to make sure everything is successful with the events. I am proud Yamilet and all of her hard work that she does during meetings and events as well. She makes Key Club her first priority no matter what! We are extremely proud of you Yamiley. Keep up the great work!
