group and solve as many quizzes as possible. One of our members even participated in this event for a whopping 21 hours! This member was our treasurer, Joshua Parayano, who was later asked about his thoughts on the event.

“Definitely want to get more involved by joining the most clubs I can handle and trying to improve the already established SHH club as the next year’s president. Also might help create an art club for the school. Besides the clubs, I also want to continue exploring tennis by joining next season and trying to recruit others. Ultimate goal is to pass the classes I have left and hopefully get a 4.0 or above GPA along with passing my final AP tests.” - ARTURO CALDERA, NOGALES CREATIVE CHAIR “My goals for the next school year are to implement as much effort as possible into my classes and maintain good grades. I also want to prioritize the extracurriculars I will be a part of, and try my best to contribute to them.” - FATIMA MEDINA, NOGALES FUNDRAISING TASK COORDINATOR

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS THROUGH ART

By: Thomas Aguilar, Nogales Webmaster; March Delgado, Nogales Editor

ARTURO CALDERA, CREATIVE CHAIR, STATES, “I LIKED THAT WE WERE ABLE TO INCORPORATE ART AND MENTAL AWARENESS OF ILLNESSES THAT ARE USUALLY NOT VISIBLE INTO A FORM THAT COULD BE PORTRAYED ACCURATELY THROUGH THE VISIBLE. I WOULD LOVE TO DO SOMETHING SIMILAR AGAIN AND GET MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED INTO ART FOR A GREATER CAUSE.” On June 27th, members attended a collaboration event between Nogales Key Club and Psychology Club which focused on mental health. The event, “Mental Health Awareness

Through Art”, educated attendees through slideshows on the various mental illnesses and psychological disorders. Those who attended would then depict their chosen disorder through

a work of art. Activities and events that work to shed light on sensitive topics are important in spreading awareness as well as creating a stronger, more united community.

GIVING GRATITUDE By: Jenny Zhang, Bonita Editor

Last month on June 6th 2021, we did an event in collaboration with another organization called Giving Gratitude. In the event, we made virtual cards for frontline workers. In total, we were able to make 144 cards. This event allowed us to explore our creativity, give our support to the frontline workers, and contribute our part

with what we have to offer. Key Club member Marissa Gonzalez says that “I thought the Giving Gratitude event was very fun. It was a great opportunity to show our appreciation to frontline workers through creating our own digital cards and I also got to meet some new people who were very kind and welcoming.” It was

amazing to see how many of us actually cared about and wanted to show our support to the frontline workers, who had helped us so much during the pandemic. It was also interesting to see how although our words are all different, we all shared the same message, which is to show our gratitude toward the frontline workers.

“THINKING OF YOU” CARD 12

By: Thomas Le, Covina President

There was another service event that came up during the middle of the month. Mr. Anderson, a member of the Covina Kiwanis club, recently had a stroke. Covina Key Club wanted to

take the time and write “Thinking of You” cards for him. We wanted to let him know that we were there for him and that everything will be okay !! He has been such a huge part of our key club and

chaperone for many many years, and it felt really nice that many members took their time to write cards for him. We hope that he will get better soon!

This past month, one of our service events we held was

members are able to choose if they want to do it on paper or email. The program allows us to help many homeless youths that are in need of shoes so that they can feel confident going to school or outside as well as comfortable. Overall the event

“Gotta Have Sole” on zoom on

June 29th, 2021. The event mostly focused on a mission to help decorate cards and write messages to children who needed shoes. Key Club

was a success! Though we had little members attend, we got to interact with the members very easily and had a lot of fun ! They really enjoyed many of our icebreakers, and that gave us more ideas for the future.

REFLECTING UPON THE EVENT, A KEY CLUB GENERAL MEMBER, JAYNAA LUU HAD THIS TO SAY: “HMM I WOULD SAY THAT MY FAVORITE PART ABOUT IT IS HOW THE TEMPLATE IS REALLY DETAILED AND THERE ARE MANY WAYS YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE THE SHOES BOTH ONLINE AND ON PAPER. IT ALLOWS A LOT OF CREATIVITY THAT GOES INTO MAKING KIDS HAPPY!”

Not only did our service events go well, we also hosted our first social bonding event after one of our general meetings. We played skribblio where each member took turns drawing a word that was given, and others had to guess. It was such a fun and relaxing event, where there were a lot of interactions!

“My goals for the following school year is to really stay on top of things. I hope I won’t get “senioritis” too early on and can persist with my good grades throughout the year. I also hope to stay active by going to the gym everyday and also getting a job. I also hope I get accepted into a good school when the year comes to a close.” - DAPHNE LEUNG, WALNUT GENERAL MEMBER

COLOR A SMILE By: Rachel Walnut Tech Editor

In the past month, Walnut Key Club hosted an event called “Color a Smile.” The event was held on June 25th from 3-4pm on zoom. The purpose of the event was to help create cheerful drawings that would later be sent to senior citizens, troops overseas, or essentially anyone that is in need of a smile. Using simple materials like crayons, color pencils, markers,

and other utensils needed to color in a template, participants can easily create their own vibrant visuals that can later make someone’s day or bring up someone’s mood. Personally, I feel like this event was an incredible way to lift up our community; the materials needed were so simple that anyone from anywhere can participate,

and because it is online there is no transportation needed-just a device, paper, color pencils, and a good attitude. Overall, I think the visuals created that day would surely bring a smile to anyone’s face as they were so beautifully made with passion and creativity.

For a WEEK-LONG SERVICE EVENT, we hosted Bean Bean Bean from June 13th through the 19th. Several members joined in to play online quizzes to donate food to charity.

We started the month of June with a dog toy making event on the 8th. We made these toys with love out of old clothes to donate to the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter, one of our local animal shelters. It was a successful event! Many members came to the service event drop off with toys for the pups.

We then hosted one of our first fundraisers of the term at our local Pollo Loco on June 25th, and some of our and their families showed up to support! Several members mentioned that they were happy with the productive month we had with service events. We hope to keep up the same energy for next month as well!

ET’S ALK

The difference between inperson and virtual events is definitely the energy they create. It is easier to engage with people in person. On the other side, staying active during virtual events is tough, especially while staring at displays that strain the eyes.” - Megan Do, D35E HSTC

16

“There aren’t any cameras to close, so you can talk to everyone! All the key clubbers are friendly and you’ll have a blast! For online, you create and send, but in person you directly serve the community and I think that is a million times better and more fun!” - Alex Chen, D35E Executive

THIS MONTH’S TOPIC: IN PERSON VS VIRTUAL

“I have been able to get more service hours through online events and meet more people from different schools than i did during in person events. However, in person events can be more interactive and a little more memorable.” - Lisette Diaz, D35E Fundraising Task Coordinator

In person events are definitely more engaging, and the atmosphere is totally different. Since cameras and mics can no longer be muted, it would be easier to get to know someone. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! - Amber Zhao, D35E Newsletter Editor

“My main goal this year is to pass my classes. My second is to learn how to paint better and buy varnish. As for this year I will be a junior and I think juniors have to apply for universities, I want to know how to do that and not cry to sleep. As for painting, I’ve only done three major serious paintings, I want to practice more to the point that you can see how much primer I put over each time I paint and want to do better. Overall I have four goals, to learn how to do applications for university, pass my classes, paint better, and the easiet is to buy varnish.” - CATHERINE LEON, COVINA GENERAL MEMBER
