Aloha Ellies!
I hope you guys are enjoying your summer as best as possible right now. I know things can get a bit boring at home right now, but I hope all of you are making the most of it. I am very proud to see a lot of Key Clubbers still attend events from home and how many of you are still stay active ins service during this time. With that, this month’s newsletter highlights different events that clubs have done from home, either making homemade items and gifts to using websites and apps to give food and fight against world hunger. In addition to highlighting service, the newsletter’s Spotlight of the Month features Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) which is one of CNH’s preferred charities. Despite everything going on right now, I hope you guys can relax, have fun, and stay safe. As well, I hope all of you enjoy the August issue of the Ellie Editoria!

What’s Poppin’ Ellies! What’s Poppin’ Ellies! Happy Summer! I hope you all are basking in the sun...while maintaining social distancing and wearing a mask! This summer is not one we wanted but I hope you all are making the best out of it. I would like to thank each and every Key Clubber who has continued to attend division and club events and helped serve your community during these trying times. I am very proud of all the Ellies who have continued to spread their Key Club spirit and serve our home, school, and community despite the circumstances we face. If you would like to be considered for an award at the end of the term, strive for 50 hours served or more by February. As we head into a new school year, let’s face this with new energy and adaptability. We have never faced a situation like this so hang on and support each other as we continue to do our best. Thank you all so much. I am so proud and grateful I am able to serve all the AMAZING Ellies that serve in our division. Keep up the hard work and I look forward to seeing you all at our events or hearing from you! Make sure to maintain social distancing and wear your masks, let’s flatten the curve together!

THANK YOU notes
This month, I went to a Thank You Note event hosted by DB Key Club. This event took place on a zoom call with many members from DBHS. Before writing the letters, we played a quick ice breaker. After getting to know each other, we were instructed to write a Thank You Note to anyone who helped us this year. I chose to write a note to one of my classmates that helped me a lot during the school year. After writing our messages, some people volunteered to share what they wrote. This event was very eye-opening for me because I mostly took people who helped me for granted. Overall, this event was very fun and helped me thank people who helped me.

KEY EATS FUNDRAISER
Walnut Key Club recently held a boba delivery fundraiser called “Key Eats” in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The proceeds from the fundraiser went towards the SCOPE LA project, which sought to establish socioeconomic equality for Los Angeles’ minorities. The event was not only open to Key Club general members, but to anyone who was interested in donating to a good cause, and we raised over $90 through this event. I personally felt that this event well demonstrated Key Club’s core values and helped create a sense of solidarity in the club in this isolating time. Key Eats was one of the first events of the term that directed efforts towards those outside of Walnut’s usual target communities, and acted as a response to the current social situation.

CARD MAKING
The Covina Key Club board knew that Father’s Day was coming up, and saw it as a great opportunity to spend time with members while making cards! On Friday June 19th, at 2:00 p.m., we hosted a Father’s Day Card Decorating Event on Zoom. Our Vice President, Thomas Le said, “I’m glad I could help out and share a cool video on how to make pull cards for Father’s Day.” However, we didn’t make pull cards mandatory, and allowed members to make their cards any way they liked, giving them room for creativity. During this event, we were able to share our awesome ideas with each other and talk about our Father’s Day plans! -Sarah Phan, Covina Editor

MAKING
This month our club hosted an event that allowed members of our club and other clubs to make bookmarks for volunteer hours, with the goal of the bookmarks to encourage reading during this weird summer. These bookmarks not only promoted reading for those who receive them but come with encouraging and unique designs made by the members of our club. Anthony Vu, South Hills Event Coordinator stated, “The event itself encourages people to make up creative designs inside and help others with the small things we are given within our houses. -Matthew Zhong , South Hills Editor

COLOR-A-SMILE
DIVISION 35 EAST X GOLDSTONE KIWIN’S JUNE 21-JUNE 26
On the 24th in the month of July, Goldstone KIWIN’S and Division 35 East collaborated on Color-A-Smile. Attendees had to print out their designs beforehand that they have chosen from Color A Smile in order to color during Zoom. These colored designs would then be delivered to hospital occupants in New Jersey to show that there are people who are interested in their well being and wish them well. Within coloring sessions, there were many icebreakers such as sharing impactful books/movies, Word Chain, and Never Have I Ever. There was also trivia about the formation of the Division and KIWIN’S on Kahoot. One of our Vice Presidents at Rowland, Michelle Huo states “Color-A-Smile was a really exciting event because we were able to not only bond with the Goldstone KIWIN’S, but also delve back into childhood nostalgia of coloring.” -Li Min Lin, Rowland Editor

BEAN
This month, Northview key Club had their first service week of the 20202021term. Members played games on Beanbeanbean.com a game created to donate money to charity. The game consists of different quizzes that the player can take, with each question they get right they earn beans. After playing, they can donate the beans and the website calculates how much money the number of beans is worth. Members were asked to play the game every day for a week and to submit on a google form how many hours they spent on it. -Dayana Pamplona, Northview Historian

Freerice.com allows users to play educational, multiple choice quizzes in order to donate grains of rice to the World Food Programme. The officer board was delighted to see many participants and service hours being submitted. Vice President, Trang Le explained “I think the freerice event was a good way to help people and at the same time, it wasn’t a very intimidating event for newer members.” She even stated that the chemistry games were her specialty. The Freerice event was a simple and enjoyable way to support areas that are in need of food and supplies. -Arianna Morales, iPOLY Editor

SERVE?
“To me, serving is being able to, quite literally, give back to the community. Many times, we forget that we live a privileged life and have many comforts that many other families in our own community cannot afford, or be able to experience. That's why we must take time out of our comfortable lives to help others in need through service.” -Henry Tiet, South Hills Secretary “I think service means having the empathy and compassion to use your personal time to help someone else. the act of service is really important and I think it’s something that not many people do these days!” -Selena Cao, South Hills General member “I believe serving means to dedicate time and energy to better the community; helping others while also helping yourself” -Michele Lam, South Hills President
