What’s up Ellies!

I hope you all are adjusting to second semester of distance learning! Can you believe that we only have one more 2 MORE FULL MONTHS of the term left? It’s crazy! I was very happy to see many of you participate in our division events and also see all of you teach your home club service events at our Winter Serve-a-Thon! Keep up the good work and let’s reach our service hour goal of 6,000 hours!!! I know we can do it!!!

THE LTG

Happy New Year Ellies! 2020 is in the past and 2021 is our future. With this new year, I hope brighter things are to come! I want to congratulate you all for making it through the tough year we called 2020! I applaud you all for finishing your semester at school and all the seniors for nearly completing all your college applications. With 2021, we want to start off with renewed energy for service and finish strong before our term ends in 4 more months! In addition, although our dues season is over, we can continue to recruit members! We want to add to our ever-growing family and share the experiences we’ve had in Key Club with others. <3 I wish you all the best in the first month back into the year and hope you won’t forget about me quite just yet when we elect our next Lt. Governor in a few days!

T-SHIRT BAG MAKING

Walnut Key Club recently took part in D35E’s Season of Serving, a service marathon spanning the last few days of 2020 that allowed members to earn up to 26 hours of volunteer hours. The first volunteer session of the marathon was held by Walnut, and we participated in Letters for Kindness and Upcycle Your Ts. In Letters for Kindness, members wrote and decorated thank you letters to teachers and healthcare workers to demonstrate their gratitude for their hard work over the past year. For Upcycle Your Ts, members upcycled old teachers into reusable bags by following a tutorial led by Walnut cabinet members. I felt that this marathon that served as a last hurrah to 2020 was a great way to end a below average year, and I’m happy others found reason to celebrate their last few days in 2020 through service.

This December, Key Club hosted an event called Reading Buddies. In this event, we got to read to little elementary school kids and help aid in their reading abilities. During the beginning of the event, we played ice breakers which included going out of our comfort zones and telling a little bit about ourselves. After icebreakers, we chose a story to read out loud with the elementary school kids. Throughout the story we discussed the story’s meaning and many kids had creative insights on the story. Overall, interacting with the kids was a fun experience which made me value Key Club even more.

COLOR-A-SMILE

In the month of December, the division announced a new service event named “Season of Serving” where every day, from Monday to Thursday, there is a different service event led by each club to the end of 2020 with strong service hours! Covina Key Club had its event on the third day of the marathon and it was the first session of the day! We did Color-A-Smile, where we colored the pages and sent them to the hospitals. We had music playing to make our session more fun. We had icebreakers to take a break, and we even went to breakout rooms to socialize with other members!

SOCK PUPPETS

On December 29th, Rowland held Operation Smile: Sock Puppets for the Division’s Season of Serving: Service Marathon. Key Club members from different schools also attended to make sock puppets for children who have a disability with speaking. The sock puppets would help motivate children to speak! It was nice to give children sock puppets that assist in their speaking for their daily usage in life. For the duration of the event, many creative, original creatures were designed. Members crafted the sock puppets with art supplies that could be found in your very own homes. We also had icebreakers which included Who’s That Celeb? and What’s Gibby Thinking About? Participants would say aloud their answers or type in the ZOOM chat. Secretary, Yan Yan Lin said, “It’s a great way to help kids in need during a pandemic!”
