THE EDITOR

What’s up Ellies!

I hope you all are well and excited to get a break from school as we get closer to Winter Break. This month, the Ellie Editorial focuses not just on service, but also giving thanks as we try to help those in need, especially in this upcoming holiday season. I’m so proud to see so many of you staying active at our division events and or club events. I was so happy to see many of you go to our Winter Serve-a-thon and also see many of you participate in our River of Roses Project with Division 35 West! Keep up the good work as we only have a little over 3 months of the term left! We got this!!!

THE LTG

Happy Winter Ellies! College Apps season is coming to an end & we’re reaching a new year! I know I’m not the only one that is very happy that 2020 is over despite all the lessons we’ve all learned from this crazy year. In addition, we are halfway through the term! Let’s continue to serve and finish the year strong. We are also reaching the period of time in which we are going to be choosing our next Lt. Governor who will take on this role of serving this amazing division. If you are interested in running this year or in the future, make sure to attend the Candidate Training Conference. Not only is it a MANDATORY training for Key Clubbers interested in running for LTG but it’s a great way to build up your resume for future positions. Contact me if you have any questions! I hope you’re all having a safe holiday and you do your best to minimize the spread of COVID-19!

Serving with a smile, Hilary Wong Division 35 East Lieutenant Governor

TURKEY RUNNERS A few days before Thanksgiving in November, WHS Key Club teamed up with Project 29:11, a non profit food bank, for the Turkey Runners event. A maximum of eight volunteers would run back and forth, bringing Thanksgiving dinner and supplies to a long line of cars. One part of the group had to work together to give each family one pre-cooked frozen turkey, a paper bag including a variety of desserts and side meals, and an aluminum tray. Then the family would drive up to the front of the building and receive more boxes of fruit and food from a mix of Key Club members and Project 29:11 volunteers. Although this event was in person, Key Club strictly followed Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CBC) rules, wearing masks, gloves and staying six feet apart from all people at the event. As a host for the event, I am so grateful for the members who quickly volunteered and took a risk to allow everyone the chance to enjoy a Thanksgiving Dinner. Due to the smaller amount of people and shared experience of hands-on hard work, I felt a stronger connection between our members. This service event provided us with a healthy reminder of how Key Club was before the pandemic, and that we are still able to recreate the feeling of working with like-minded people for the new members this year. Turkey Runners is truly a memorable experience, not only for our own accomplishment, but because of the smiles we received from each and every one of those who came.

MEET YOUR MAJOR

On November 13, IPoly Key Club teamed up with Cal Poly Pomona’s Circle K to host the “Meet Your Major” social. Members had the opportunity to learn about different majors and ask questions about college in general. Students outside of IPoly Key Club were also invited to interact with alumni in various small groups. When asked about the event, Vice President Trang Le said, “ I’m glad I attended because a lot of good advice was given and I was able to hear about the experiences in college.” It seemed that the people who went really enjoyed the event as they provided great feedback.

CLOTHING DRIVE

09

Between November 30th and December 4th, we had our very first collaboration with UNICEF! This collaboration was designated towards helping local homeless shelters. Members were able to get started on their winter cleaning and help out the community at the same time! Participants had to pack up all their items into bags and boxes to drop off at the school premises. These items were then sent to a nearby homeless shelter to give people nice, warm clothes for this cold weather. It was nice to see that people are still giving to the community even when we are stuck at home. We were able to provide families comfort during their holiday season, as they would have clothes and necessities during these difficult times!

COVINA FOOD DRIVE

November is the month of gratitude and giving, so we teamed up with our school’s ASB and Interact Club for a Food Drive! From November 16th to November 20th people were able to drop off canned or boxed foods and packets. With the help of ASB, we were able to give out goodie bags to those who donated! It was wonderful to see everyone working together for a good cause, and in the end all of us were able to donate close to a thousand items to our community! Our president Megan Do said, “ I was so happy to see so many donations and I am thankful for everyone who participated!”

READING BUDDIES

11

This December, Key Club hosted an event called Reading Buddies. In this event, we got to read to little elementary school kids and help aid in their reading abilities. During the beginning of the event, we played ice breakers which included going out of our comfort zones and telling a little bit about ourselves. After icebreakers, we chose a story to read out loud with the elementary school kids. Throughout the story we discussed the story’s meaning and many kids had creative insights on the story. Overall, interacting with the kids was a fun experience which made me value Key Club even more.

at’s your favorite thing about the holidays?

d

“My favorite thing about the holidays would mainly be the fact that we get a break school! It’s a nice time for me to just spend 10 hours in bed chillaxing. Under different circumstances, basketball season would start, which is both exciting and nerve-racking. Due to COVID this year, I’m just looking forward towards chilling and celebrating my mom’s and my own birthday during break! It’s exciting as I will be turning 16, but I can’t really do anything so I’ll just enjoy it at home with my family!”

-Katelyn Chi, John A. Rowland General Member “My favorite thing about this holiday season is sleeping in and binge watching movies. I can’t wait to catch up with some friends and watch movies with them through Zoom! I love that I get
