What’s poppin Ellies!

I hope all of you are enjoying and making the most of your summer vacation right now. I know this whole quarantine and online schooling has not been fun, but at least we can now relax a bit. I know everything’s a little bit weird right now but I know we can get through it. With that, this month’s newsletter showcases how Key Clubbers across D35E have been staying active and how they have been serving at home. As well, we are also focusing on the core value of leadership, as all of us have the potential to be a good leader and that I have seen many of you step up as leaders during this time. Despite everything going on, I hope you all relax and have some fun during this time, and I hope you enjoy this issue of the Ellie Editorial!

THE LTG

Happy Summer, Ellies! We are halfway through 2020 and finally on summer vacation! To all the Key Clubbers who had to retake your AP tests, I hope you were able to successfully do it this time, and are now able to relax! In this past month, we have faced much adversity with the rising numbers in COVID-19 cases and the social movement regarding racism in our Black community. As a division apart of Key Club Internation, we do not tolerate racial injustices. As Key Clubbers, we exemplify our core values, lead caring and inclusive lives, and use our platform to develop our homes, schools, and communities. We must continue to self-reflect and educate ourselves and others to take stances against racial inequality. Black lives matter and as Key Clubbers, we stand by the Black community. On a final note, we hope you all are staying safe during these trying times and doing your part in flattening the curve. On the brighter side, we had more than 45 participants during our “We Are In This Together” service week. I encourage you to continue to participate until June 27th. In addition, we will be hosting more division events and your club will continue to promote service events as well! Let’s have a productive summer and serve more hours than last term in the month of July! Thank you to all the secretaries for 100% on-time submission for the MRF! We are on a two-month streak. Keep up the hard work! I hope you are all staying home and continuing to serve with passion! See you all at the next events!

4 LOVE

This month members of Northview key Club got to partake in a card event, Letters 4 Loves. During these difficult times the residents of House of Grace In West Covina and Claremont, California received cards from our key club members. Members created and decorated Cards to shows them that they are loved and that they aren’t alone in these difficult times. Our Key Club President, Naia Pizzaro says, ”The letters 4 love event’s goal was to brighten the day of the residents at our local convalescent homes, as through these difficult unprecedented times many residents’ families are unable to visit and as a club, we wrote letters or made cards to show them they have people all through there community thinking of them.” Northview Key Club wanted to do what they could to help people in need during these times.

CELETTER -BRATION The Ce-letter-bration event was an amazing opportunity to thank our favorite seniors for their profound impact on each and every one of us. The school year did not end how we expected it to and they definitely got the short end of the stick. During this event we were able to express our gratitude for everything they have done for us. From giving advice to helping out with homework, our seniors truly deserve the best. Through this event I really felt like I was able to thank them properly. Good luck class of 2020! We will miss you!

SENIORS

On May 30, 2020, Rowland key clubbers attended the home club event, Thank You Seniors, where everyone made digital flyers congratulating the class of 2020. The class of 2020 didn’t have a proper graduation, so everyone made their own special designs and notes on their flyers to make the seniors feel appreciated. This event took place on zoom, where we had a surprise visit from our LTG Hilary Wong, Kiwanian chaperons Mr. Bashir, Mrs. Ayson, Mr. Lim, Ms. Price, and Mr. Wong. In order to make the flyers, simple art softwares such as Canva were being used. Along with the flyers, some participants created lovely gifs. Everyone was able to make their own designs, while entertaining quarantine questions were being asked to break the tension. Crystal Nguyen, the Treasurer of Rowland Key Club, stated, “The event made me look back on old memories and events with the seniors. I am going to miss them so much and knowing that they are leaving Key Club makes me sad.” Even though we are not able to go out for service, we are still capable of helping out the community! -Li Min Lin, Rowland Editor

CARD MAKING

This month my club hosted a card making event to send to children during these hard times, not only to bring a smile to their faces but give them something that can be memorable. In this event we members of our club work on designing cards with an interesting outside but also a letter within The icebreaker for this event was to guess the location of a google map area using context clues around the area, requiring the player to use their best guess as their answer for the location of said photo. South Hills Treasurer Jessica Cao stated, “The event made me reflect on how fortunate I am that I’m healthy. and my heart goes out to those who are in the hospital.” -Matthew Zhong , South Hills Editor

CHALK-FULL OF HOPE

Our club recently held an event called “Chalk-full of Hope” in April, where participants drew, designed, and wrote kind messages on their sidewalks for Elderly Americans month. The event was unique from the other service events we’ve had over quarantine in the sense that the people we drew for were able to directly view our work. I personally found this event very fun and relaxing, as I was given the chance to create for a good cause. Though the art I drew was primarily aimed towards the elderly in my neighborhood, I hope that everyone who read them while on a walk was uplifted by the messages. -Joy Wang , Walnut Tech Editor

what does

LEADERSHIP mean to you? “To me, leadership means taking the opportunities that you have to be able to make an impact on others. That can mean helping people out with what you know or creating opportunities to learn what you do not know yet. It means growing from the person you once were and becoming someone who is ready to be a leader. A leader inspires others to make a change. Leadership is a skill that is very useful in the world today and I hope we use this skill to create a positive change.” - Emily Escobar, Northview General Member

“I believe being a leader is someone who is understanding, works well with the team and help others in need.” - Aye khin, Northview Secretary “I believe being a leader is someone who is understanding, works well with the team and help others in need.” - Audrey Pitallano, Diamond Bar General Member Leadership to me means a person that can listen to other ideas and is a great communicator.” - Selena Cao, South Hills General Member

what does

LEADERSHIP mean to you? “Leadership means to me finding a balance between being an understanding and approachable friend to my team as well as being willing to take initiative to hold them accountable. It’s important to form a bond with the team and for the team to form a bond with each other, therefore I think leadership requires skills of understanding and empathy a lot of the time so that they can work well and efficiently together. Yet, being too lenient can cause consequences, possibly slacking or general taking advantage of kindness, therefore it’s also important to keep the team accountable and feel responsible for their jobs. Overall, leadership is a variety of qualities that helps build up the team and feels like a family, while still needing a certain amount of professionalism and accountability to get work done.” - Angela Yu, John A.
