Hey Ellies!

Can you believe that we barely have a little over a month left of the 2020-2021 term? Time flies by so fast! This is going to be my second to last newsletter for you guys which make this very bittersweet. I know the term is not over yet, but I have enjoyed every moment serving you guys! I have loved seeing all of your submissions and seeing you at all our service events and fundraisers. Thank you for always submitting articles and visuals each month and helping me create the newsletter based on each of your experiences. Let’s make the most of the next month and treasure the rest of this term. I hope you guys are doing well and stay safe, and I hope to see you all at our next events!

THE LTG

Hello Ellies! We are officially less than 50 days away from the end of the 2020-2021 term!! 😮 This term has gone by so incredibly fast and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. This will be my second to last letter for the division newsletter and that makes me so incredibly sad. It is so bittersweet and although we’re reaching the end, we need to finish strong! We have members to recruit, money to raise for PTP and a service hour goal to reach. Let’s treasure these last few moments of the term and leave our mark on the term. Thank you all for your continued service and dedication to Key Club. I am always in awe and inspired by you all. Keep up the good work! See you all soon at our final events.

Stopming through Service, Hilary Wong Division 35 East Lieutenant Governor

THE LTG-ELECT

Hey Ellies! My name is Marcus Fang and I will be serving you as the next Lieutenant Governor for the 2021 to 2022 term! I hope you have all been doing well and school has not been too stressful for you! I am so excited for the upcoming term but I want to remind you we still have about two months of our term left! At the beginning of this term our division goals seemed impossible but we are almost there! Your dedication to Key Club has absolutely amazed me and I know we can keep this unwavering spirit up for the remainder of our term! Keep on attending events, fundraisers, and make sure to have your friends attend too! If we continue this I have no doubt in my mind that we can achieve both our division goals! Thank you so much and stay safe!

Keep your trunk up! Marcus Fang Division 35 East Lieutenant Governor-Elect

UPCYCLING YOUR T’S

07

Have you thought of the amount of plastic bags you’ve collected over the past year? Do you know how many plastic bags end up in the ocean? How many sea creatures and marine life are harmed from the trash and plastic in the ocean? On January 30th, our club, along with the club ECGA, hosted the t-shirt up-cycling event. Members of ECGA, Key Club, and even the district attended, reaching an alarming attendance of 51 members! From 2-3pm, we taught members how to make a simple reusable bag out of an old t-shirt. In doing so, we were able to innovate through old materials in order to reduce the use of plastic. I’ve learned that by taking five to ten minutes out of your day to make a simple bag, you can influence and make a huge impact on the environment, changing it for the better.

GIRLS LOVE MAIL

Ahh yes, February is the month of love, so it’s perfect for Covina Key Club to be writing about our event we held called Girls Love Mail! For a whole week, our members were able to write letters to women newly diagnosed with breast cancer to share support. It was especially fun during our Zoom meeting we hosted because there were friendly members present. On January 22nd from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, everyone had a wonderful time talking to each other while working on letters. President of Covina Key Club Megan Do said, “The best part about the zoom meeting was that the conversation we were having was so much fun and we were trying to encourage others to join our chat.”

APPRECIATION On January 31st, Rowland Key Club collaborated with Nogales Key Club to email encouraging letters for the frontline workers! We were put into breakout rooms where Key Clubbers worked on emailing the hospitals for their appreciation. It was fun to be placed into breakout rooms with Nogales and bond over different topics. This event was a way to give back to frontline and medical workers and have our first collaboration with our neighboring school. It was a righteous activity to do ever since COVID-19 began and everyone have been working their hardest.

DIGITAL MESSAGES

This month our club held a month long event where members got to send digital messages to healthcare workers. Due to the pandemic not all members can participate in making physical cards, so we decided to have a month long events to make digital notes. Notesforsupport.com is a website that allows people to send messages to healthcare workers for COVID-19 patients, members could participate in making notes for 2 hour per day from the 11th to the 31st. These notes were sent to hospitals like The University Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, Coast Plaza Huntington Hospital in Los Angeles, California, and the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. The total amount of community hours that could’ve been accomplished was 42 hours.

ELLE INSIDER: Every month we will be asking members an insider question about their experience in Key Club.

What makes you HAPPY?

“Hanging out with friends and family makes me happy. The feeling of not being able to stress or worried makes me happy.”

-Thomas Le, Covina Vice President “Recently I’ve begun playing the piano and it’s super fun! Also, I am trying to read more this year, so I’ve been enjoying my book The Secret Garden at the moment! When I’m not doing these things, spending time with my family and pet is really nice.”

-Sarah Phan, Covina Editor “Food and sleepppp definitely make me happyyy but also when I get to just relax and not have to worry about doing anything whether its school or personal things :D!”

-Ruthie Kang, Covina General Member “There are different factors that make me happy, but the main ones are the relationships I have in my life. :)”

-Kylie Phung, Northview Member Recognition “The little things make me happy— whether I receive a good morning text, going on mini adventures/ exploring the unknown, to doing plenty of self care everyday: reading, listening to music, meditating watching the sunset, etc! Especially the people that I do surround myself with that provide nothing but unconditional love also makes me really happy. ;)”
