Straight from my heart
hose who know me, do know how crazy I am about the TV show F.R.I.E.N.D.S. I have watched the entire series five times and random episodes for God know how many times. Every time I have watched the series finale, I have cried. This is because the sorrow of the end of that beautiful show strikes me each time. I usually write my PR address towards the end, when the entire newsletter is ready and when I saw this edition, I had legit tears in my eyes. There has been so much going on in my personal life that until 28th June, I was happy that this term is coming to an end and a big task will be off my chest. On 29th June, I started developing mixed feelings and today, I am wrapped in gloom.
inputs. Anup, whom I started calling “Paro Diya” for his never-extinguishing smile, had burned midnight oils in the initial editions. Moving on to editors - Juhi and Prajwal, these two GenZs of my PR family proved to be solid support for both newsletter and Humans of D98. Muskaan, who took over the baton mid-way and yet learned everything so quickly. Namrata, who always delivered what she committed. The one person who has to be thanked the most and the entire district would vouch for her hard work and diligence is my Chief Newsletter Editor, Pinky Bahroos. Her commitment to her role was impeccable.
I still remember the struggles of releasing the first edition of this term and today, we are sitting at the 12th and the final one - something that is being delivered after two years. I feel so blessed to have worked with this fabulous team, who ensured we produce all editions and stand by each other. Starting with designers Abilash, whom I can call the ever helping and I don’t have the emotional strength to write most diligent of the lot. Sathvik, the guy who this address any further and hence, for the one wears the creative hat and always has quirky last time… Aishwarya Vijay Public Relations Manager

Dreams do come true!
hen I was a teenager, I wanted to walk the ramp, waving at the audience wearing those long white satin gloves, giving the expression of being pleasantly shocked like Sushmita Sen, Miss Universe 1994. I was and still am a big fan of hers, I adore the way she carries herself, the way she talks! Yes, you always don’t get what you want, the way you want it, but for sure you get it in some way or other, if you believe in yourself. It was a fangirl moment for me, when The Sushmita Sen, shared my thought on her Instagram ID story on 31st May In this edition you will find the District 2021, with a love emoticon for me! Editor Stories I remember entering college wanting to turn my life around, be more than just an introvert. I took up any and every activity possible to be more out there, but nothing felt quite right for me. Finally, in 2020 I stumbled across Toastmasters and my life changed almost instantly. From being a member to a buddy to VPPR and also be an editor for the District Newsletter helped me grow personally and professionally. I’ve seen the best of my creativity portrayed through this platform and will forever be grateful for it!

Designer Stories Not so long ago, my favourite companion and I strolled through the lengths and breaths of Pune streets, trying to get one perfect frame clicked. We wandered to random places like old abandoned buildings, open barren lands, to some happening places like MG Road, Khadki Market. It was not just roaming and looking with my naked eyes, but to look through my companion’s eyes, with my thoughts to frame it well before pressing the button to the shutter in my camera - my favourite companion. On a pleasant morning, while I was roaming near the Khadki Cantonment area, the golden rays of hope filling that place from light-years away started to pull me towards it. A chilling gentle breeze gave me goosebumps as I gazed into that perfect frame of landscape. Green carpet covered the land, topped with the mist and the golden rays outlining the space and my adrenaline rush increased multi-folds. I clicked some test shots to check my camera settings and walked much closer in this three-layer beauty. As I got closer, I heard nature speaking to me in a loud, clear and bold voice, “Please don’t use the camera here and leave the place, sir”. I ignored the voice and stepped forward, but then, out of nowhere, a soldier appeared in his full armed force attire, holding a gun. I smiled at him, said sorry and walked back thinking my companion and his gun both can shoot, differently though!

Journey of a District Champion
an you become a District Champion at your very first attempt at the International Speech Contest (ISC)? The answer is YES, and I am a living example of that. It was March 2020, when I was looking forward to my first attempt at ISC. I was just one speech away from completing my Level 2 in Pathways, when I had an accident that dislocated my shoulder. I had to undergo a surgery and my dream of participating in ISC 2020 was shattered. recording myself and watching the recordings over and over. Throughout the next year, I actively participated in several other contests, along Throughout this journey, the stakes kept with giving speeches in different clubs and getting higher, the trophies kept getting playing different roles in contests. From taking bigger, but I kept my focus on growth. Winning up leadership roles in the Executive Committee and losing is a part of life that is beyond our to becoming the President of my club, from control. What we can control is our efforts. attending Educational sessions to organizing Instead of worrying about the outcome, I just such events, I did it all. gave my best shot at every step and enjoyed the process. Having binge-watched all the past World Championship videos several times on YouTube, My primary advice to someone who wants I drafted my ISC script and delivered my speech to become great at speech contests or public at the club contest. And then it just happened, I speaking, is to believe in yourself. Even though won at the Club level, and the streak continued this was my first attempt at the International till the Area, Division and the District. After every Speech Contest, I believed in myself, focused stage, I focused on improving one aspect of my on constant growth and delivered my best speech, be it - speech structure, conclusion or speech. It doesn’t matter if you have spent a body language. Your friendly neighborhood evaluator
hen I joined Toastmasters in 2015 and learned about the types of contests, I scoffed at the concept of conducting a contest for “evaluations”. “What’s so great about that? How is an evaluation even a measure of your public speaking skills?” Six years and countless evaluations later, I am writing this article as someone who has become synonymous with evaluations and I am enjoying every bit of it. In my humble opinion, I believe that a contest is by far the most thrilling aspect of being a Toastmaster. My first tryst with a contest came in 2017 as a member of Opulent Toastmasters Club of Pune Camp when I participated in the Club Evaluation Contest. I won and was set to participate in the Area Level Contest a month later. I made notes and even visited my competitors’ clubs to watch them evaluate (Yes, I was very competitive. Also, I was unemployed). Despite my best efforts, it wasn’t my day. In a strange way, I already knew it the moment I stepped off the stage. I continued evaluating for the next year and won the Area Contest. The beast was off my back, briefly. After my area evaluation, an experienced Toastmaster came up to me and told me that while my evaluation was very detailed, I couldn’t win Division if I didn’t treat my evaluation as a performance. This single piece of advice turned out to be life-changing.
I focussed on adding a touch of spontaneity to my evaluations and managed to reach the District stage in 2019. I was overwhelmed with the response I received, with several people whom I had never met, congratulating me. But alas, I came 2nd in District that year and the next year, I couldn’t even clear the Division round. Finally, I achieved my four-year long dream of winning at District level in Eloquence 2021. Without a doubt, it is an important milestone in my Toastmasters journey. I implore every Toastmaster to realize the power of this platform. Your thoughts and your words have the power to influence someone you don’t even know, and I think that’s beautiful. If speaking in your club is like a playoff match, speaking in a District contest is the World Cup final. And once you have made it that far, you are already a winner.

Do the things you fear
et me let you in on a secret: I have always been terrified of public speaking. I gave my first speech when I was nine years old, and I had to unceremoniously flee the stage midway as I had completely blanked out. And thus began my unpleasant relationship with public speaking. My signing up for Toastmasters was with a single-minded goal of overcoming this fear. But diving headfirst into doing things you fear can be a double-edged sword: unless you have steeled yourself for all that’s in store (like being unexpectedly called onstage for a Table Topics speech during your first meeting as a guest), it can often backfire and scar you from trying anything new. Perhaps that’s where Toastmasters makes a serious difference. Through Toastmasters, I discovered Pathways, a highly effective set of progress paths aimed at moulding even newbie speakers into becoming crackling, effective communicators. I discovered a wealth of materials on the Toastmasters website, dealing with aspects such as leadership, mentoring and club decorum, in addition to public speaking. Some of the articles in the Toastmasters magazine seemed particularly aimed at trembling novices like me, encouraging speakers to open up, speak, and having their voices heard. I trudged and trodded on my oratory journey with hesitant initial speeches followed
by more assured ones later, supported by detailed feedback from mentors, who guided on numerous aspects such as speechwriting, delivery, club conduct and of course, pushing one to reach for challenging goals. I picked up multiple roles at club meetings, learning how even non-speaking roles such as Grammarian, Ah Counter, Timer, etc., contributed towards active listening, a skill that we as humankind can surely use a lot more. Today I smile at my newly-acquired District-98 Humorous Speech Championship trophy, each time doffing an imaginary hat to all those mentors and fellow Toastmasters who variously cajoled and coaxed, guided and goaded me to reach for goals that I wouldn’t have aimed for otherwise. As Helen Blanchard, the first female president of Toastmasters International famously said: “if you get out of Toastmasters all that there is to get out of Toastmasters, you’ll never get out of Toastmasters.” I guess I’m going to be a Toastmaster for life.

Champion Speaks DISTRICT 98 dream dreamt for and invested into which finally came into fruition. On May 23rd, when the contest concluded and the results were announced, three close friends from District 98 called me up and in each of the calls, we were just gushing with joy, failing to gather any words whatsoever! I also discovered that I was terrible at accepting joy and success, given that we tune ourselves to accept failures always, and never successes. As I started to pen down the pointers that can make you a champion in public speaking, I could arrive at the ones listed. 1. Audience first – Do I speak in a way any audience can relate to? Are my speeches engaging and impactful? These are the questions you can begin with to reflect on the speeches you deliver at your club or other forums. As a public speaker, it is our responsibility to shape our speeches and stories in a way that is both impactful as well as engaging to a wide variety of the audience. “I made a great speech; the audience didn’t understand” is an invalid statement. 2. Be a storyteller – The quickest way to create an impact on the audience! Stories are what connect us as humans and a good storyteller is the one, we always want to hear more from! Narrate stories of movies to your close ones, and weave stories about the tiniest parts of

your lives, all will make you a better storyteller and hence, a better speaker. 3. Compete with you – Judges were partial, the competition was so-and-so and my luck was foul. These are some of the reasons I have heard over the years and I am not here to refute your experiences. However, what is important is to reflect on your own journey and assess if you are better than the last attempt. 4. Be Authentic – The way you talk – powerfully/candidly/with a smile/without a smile, all is authentic to you. Never doubt your authentic style of talking. You endorse yourself; you are unique and that is your biggest strength! Remember, that every win or a defeat is a part of your journey, and while the journey may be long or short or smooth or rough, but it surely will be rewarding, if you have the will to believe! Cherished Moments
When the lockdown eased slightly, our club members had the first “physical” Toastmasters meeting in months. It was exhilarating and exciting to meet many new people as though already familiar, and to meet some familiar people anew! - Tanvi Kher, Deccan Toastmasters Club, P5 ‘Believe in yourself, you have it in you!’ These were the words of my chief mentor that I cherish most. I never thought I would participate in any contest, specifically the Humorous Speech Contest. But the support at that moment helped me overcome my limits, so believe in yourself! - Rishika Multani, Raisoni Institute’s Diamond Toastmasters Club, N1
My most cherished moment is when a precious betel leaf plant survived after death. After many unsuccessful trials, it grew. Surprisingly one day it dried. Life returned in the dried stem; manifesting the law of nature, “In the midst of death, life persists”. - Prachi Mishra, RG Speakers Toastmasters Club, J1 My most cherished moment was when I gave my Tall Tales Speech. I had prepared for two weeks, locking myself in my room. When the audience reacted the way I wanted them to, it felt really fulfilling. I won the contest but the speech delivery was way more exciting than winning. - Abhishek Hemraj, GITAM Toastmasters Club, F4 We cherish moments that have made us what we are today. Be it, a new skill, a person, or a moment of epiphany. Delivering my first table topic speech as a guest is one of the moments I cherish the most. That day I was introduced to Toastmasters. - Vibha Verma, Baner Toastmaster Club, C2

Power of Dialogues Dialogue : “Akhri baar likh raha hu, hosake toh kahani yaad rakna.” Movie - Kapoor and Sons. This was used as the opening and the closing sentence, in the speech to inspire the audience. The speech was about leaving a legacy in a lifetime. -Dennis John, Rainbow Toastmasters Club, P3
Dialogue : “Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost.” Movie - Om Shanti Om. I used it to explain how my journey at Toastmasters helped in my career. How it provided me opportunities one after another. Kept me motivated to move forward every day because there is still a lot to achieve ahead. - Vamsi Yerrapragada ,Bibvewadi Toastmasters Club, D2
Dialogue : “Kaun hai vo jisne dubara mudke mujhe nahi dekha, Who is he?“ Movie - Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam. Dialogue was used in my ice breaker speech when I narrated how I connected myself to art and told everyone about my Instagram art account (i.e. @the_ little_fins) - “ Kaun hai vo jisne mere art account ko follow nahi kiya, aaj tak meri post ko like nahi kiya, Who are you? “ -Purnima Lokwani,TCS BE@T Gandhinagar, A5 Dialogue – “Mere Karan Arjun aayenge” Movie - Karan Arjun. In Tall Tales Contest the speech title was ‘My Karan Arjun’, where I described how I met Karan i.e. Shahrukh and Arjun i.e. Salman. To be specific, how I met Shahrukh on Juhu beach and how I was rescued from goons by Salman while travelling in local train but all that was a dream and ended the speech with dialogue “Mere Karan Arjun aayenge” -Meghna Jaswani,TCS BE@T Gandhinagar, A5

There’s a dragon in me
There’s a dragon in me, The dragon is vile and volatile, Full of anger and resentment The dragon has a large ego, Every word, every remark, Every opinion, every judgement, Ignites a spark in his soul Usually, the dragon explodes, Spitting fire, burning homes Sometimes, he waits, Pretends, but the poor dragon is a creature of habit, Eventually, he explodes and destroys relationships For a long time, I’ve fought him, with swords, sticks and stones, Oh, I’ve also called him nasty names But, it was to no avail, For I never won a battle, and he has never lost any, So, I spit out my hatred And joined forces with him, to find out, What he’s made of As we became allies, Brothers, Of the same kin, I noticed one thing in particular That, during the day, The dragon boasted of his riches and his gold, but in the night, he spoke of his unhappy childhood He had,
critics for parents, bullies for friends, and haters for teachers “Poor, Dragon!” I thought, I will treat you well, I told myself So, I set out on a mission, in which, I’ve donned many hats, One day, I donned the hat of a parent and appreciated the dragon, when he held himself from burning a building Then, I donned the hat of a friend, and asked him how he was or if something was bothering him, we had an hour-long conversation One day, I put on, the hat of a teacher, and taught him how to fly, without getting frustrated I kept this on, For several days, weeks and months, Then one day, as I walked up the hill I saw the dragon, flapping his wings, Happily, in the sky I ran up the hill, To get a closer view of my friend, I saw him soar higher and higher, He was way up, So, I squinted to see him, but he was too high in the sky, that I couldn’t see him anymore.
