Motivation
n a volunteer-driven organization like Toastmasters, motivating members is one of the biggest challenges that leaders at all levels can face. In the absence of motivated members, no plans or systems can work. Daniel Pink, in his book Drive, excellently describes the right way of motivating someone. Below is the link to a 10-minute video visually summarizing his findings. RSA ANIMATE: Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us - YouTube We often come up with rewards hoping one would be encouraged, but it doesn’t always work out that way. A person is highly engaged in achieving goals only when she/he has Autonomy – Freedom to execute, which gives them a sense of control over anything they do Mastery – Having the urge to do better with every iteration Purpose – Understanding their role in something bigger If we analyze the above factors in our club meeting framework, we realize that it does provide us autonomy, mastery and purpose, yet we are challenged in motivating members to participate. The answer to this, I believe, resonates well with The Law of Least Effort, Chapter 12 from The Atomic Habits by James Clear where he informs why some habits are hard to adopt. The higher the friction to do something, the more difficult it will be to
perform. Generally, at a club meeting, we will find takers for playing a Timer, Ah Counter, SAA, General Evaluator easily as these roles generally don’t require much preparation. Other roles such as Speaker, Speech Evaluator, Grammarian, Toastmaster of the Day and Table Topics Master require practice and effort. If you don’t follow a routine for yourself and don’t have an environment that encourages you to prepare for such roles, you end up avoiding these roles. The author gives us a solution of prepping the environment for the habit we need to get into with the least effort. Keep things ready in advance so when the time comes to act, you don’t procrastinate. For example, for a morning jog, keep the required clothes and shoes ready the night before. For a healthy diet, stock your fridge and snack cupboard with healthy items that are ready to eat. You need to find the friction points that are not letting you prepare for a speech or to play a role at the meeting. Once done, eliminate the waste from the process and reset the environment every time for your next action. Niteash Agarwal, DTM Districtor Director

I
t all started on July‘20 when we received a message from Aishwarya that we were a part of the Newsletter team. We were all excited and worried about the initial edition. We had only 17 days to make the first edition and two of us didn’t have the expertise in the usage of InDesign. That didn’t stop us from making the newsletter. Soon we ended up into a family. As the editions kept on moving forward, the process got streamlined. We confirm the plan of action in the last week of the previous month and the editorial team starts collecting the information and hands over in quantum’s starting from midmonth. We strategize the work into segments: “The Cover” and “The Content”. The content is shared between two and cover by one and as the content is received from the editorial team we add it into the newsletter. A day or two after the final content is given and WHOOP! Here’s your Newsletter.

Be Online Contest Ready!
ho are you speaking to in the new world of ZOOM? Well if you haven’t realized yet, your own laptop or mobile camera is your audience now. I know it is tiny and mute but that’s all we have got. Speaking in new era reminds me of the technique my mentors have told me in the past - practise in front of the mirror, imagine your audience and live the speech even before delivering it. Imagine and feel how your audience will respond, where will you stand, where will you take a pause and hear the laughter or applause even when no one is around. Well time to consider this even while delivering your final speech as well.
virtual background is allowed too, however, be careful as your body gestures may get impacted along with other glitches that technology can cause. That’s all on logistics, well you may think you got a lot to take care of, however, if you really want to give your best, these are just a few setups to take care of.
Now, what else is important while you are at a contest. Handling your nervousness? Does not matter if it is in person or over zoom, we all get those butterflies in our stomach or get nervous before speaking. What if you are the first or the last speaker, makes it even harder - does it not? If your speech is yours and practised well then here are some tips that may help fight the nervousness - one take deep breathe (yes it works), second ensure you don’t read the first few lines again and again just before your speech and finally decide to enjoy yourself. All the best!
4. Technology – Well internet connection and power backup are the two most important things when it comes to technology and for us to go live on Zoom. During normal meetings, we may take risk of getting disconnected however during the contest, let’s go an extra mile to have secured a place with power backup and strong Wi-Fi. To share an example, for an D98 Contest FAQs link. important meeting, where I could not afford to get disconnected even for a minute, I went Speech Example - Link to Semi-final 2 from to a school (long story) and got myself a room International Convention 2020 – from 30:32 to run my meeting from. DISTRICT 98 I hear a lot of PR spocs raising concerns about the restrictions on usage of different colours, icons, illustrations and images. Just remember, every colour or image narrates a story and a lot of research goes into figuring out which visual element strikes a balance with the nature of the organisation.

Childhood Memories
I was a naughty, notorious yet studious kid. I was always bold, upfront and never stopped from speaking the truth. I remember one exam day, the supervising teacher seemed to be too sweet and caring. However, it suddenly changed when she asked me to share my answer sheet with another classmate. I was shocked, we were taught to always respect teachers and they are always right. After two attempts at stalling, I finally gave in. That evening when I shared it with father, he was red with rage. We spoke to the Principal the same evening. He patiently heard me out and next day, called the teacher for an explanation. With witnesses supporting what happened, the teacher was expelled from school. I thank my father and the Principal for giving me that confidence. I learnt it is important to stand up and fight for what’s right than do nothing and crib. Brillian SK Past District Director D98 (2015-16) “Arvind will represent the class at the Inter-Division Elocution Competition. “ announced Noreen Rodrigues, my Vth C class teacher. She chose - In London Town by Mary E Coleridge. Then it was time to practice reciting it to the class. This was my first tryst with public speaking. A few sessions later the knees stopped wobbling, I found my voice and the words left my lips in harmony. The day before the competition, she asked me to check out the stage, make a mental picture of where you would stand and the gestures you would make. She advised, when you say - Look, its wings are blue, point to the huge school bell. As I went up on stage, I was calm and composed. As I came to the line - Look its wings are blue, I bent forward slightly and pointed in the direction of the school bell. Quite a few heads turned to look in the direction I was pointing. I got off the stage to some thunderous applause. I won third place. As a Toastmaster, when I reflect, I see the lessons given to me: a) familiarize yourself with the stage b) imagine or have an object to point to for effect c) practice, practice, practice. Childhood Memories
The fondest memory of my childhood was when I was barely six-seven years old. I used to stay with my maternal grandparents since my parents both were working. I was particularly difficult to manage, it needed a battalion of cousins, aunts and neighbours to control me as I always invited trouble. One such memory was when I was gifted a tricycle by my uncle and after a few rounds inside the house, I decided to take it to the next level. When my grandfather left for his office, I slowly sneaked out of the house on the tricycle and in no time, I was riding it on the main roads where there was traffic. People around tried to chase and stop me, but I happened to manoeuvre my cycle away from all of them until a traffic cop got hold of me and brought me back, after a few enquiries in the neighbourhood, to a worried grandmother. Ravi Teja Past District Director D98 (2018-19)
Favourite Pathways Projects Ever watched a panel discussion and loved it? The panellists are indeed fantastic but it is the role of the moderator that always captivated my attention as he/she is the one who is driving the whole discussion. I was very much fascinated to take up this project in my Motivational Strategies path, level 5. We organised a panel discussion on Table Topics and it was a fantastic session with 250+ attendees. I learnt how to know the panellists, their forte and prepare questions accordingly. In addition to that, researching a topic, keeping the discussion on point and handling Q and A sessions is also a learning for me. One of the best projects for me indeed! Favourite Pathways Projects
High-performance leadership project is the most insightful project of Pathways. Through this project, I learned to utilize my skills by leading and organising a project from scratch. I was able to gain knowledge through coordination and teamwork. I gained real-time experience and determined the true attributes of a leader. By working together as a team, we faced all the hurdles bravely and became a grand success. Even international members and guests joined us, thus, portraying excellence and demonstrating high performance. Shruti Shivhare TCS Maitree Toastmasters Club Indore, A4
I am about to complete level 5 of Innovative Planning. I was surprised at my ability to lead a panel discussion. I virtually saw myself as a mini Larry King of CNN! The subject of “Fear of Public Speaking” was handled so deftly by the panelists, consisting of a doctor, an international trainer, an ex radio jockey, a young entrepreneur and a National level Under 19 Cricketer. The timer was so mesmerized, that he forgot to show the cards (or was it deliberate?). KP Jani, Amdavad Toastmasters club, Heritage City Toastmasters Club, A1 All Elite Advanced Toastmasters Club, S1
I had never learnt the art of convincing others towards a common goal. The path Persuasive Influence gave me an opportunity to motivate and push my club members towards the reason they joined Toastmasters. However, the most essential characteristic of a leader is exceptional listening capabilities. With Active Listening, I realized how to be lively while exchanging ideas.
