anesh Chaturthi is one of my favourite festivals for which I eagerly wait for the entire year. This festival has a lot of memories, especially with my grandfather, who served as the President of the Ganpati Trust in Khadki for more than 37 years. For these 1012 days, I am present more at the pavilion that is set with interesting themes, than at home, giving prasad to devotees, playing dhol-tasha and enjoying the pomposity in the locality. It is here where I learned a lot about leadership observing my grandfather, who lived up to every leadership trait that I write about below. It doesn’t surprise me why he was such a loved leader and a go-to person for all.
Small Eyes (Focused vision) Small eyes of Lord Ganesha indicate that one should be focused on completing tasks at hand. A proper focus and a measured approach are pivotal pillars of success.

Enjoying masala tea with hot fritters, while preparing for the contests. My first official meet as a member back in 2017, was the Evaluation and the Humorous speech contest. I have been a part of the contests since then - sometimes as a contest chair, sometimes as the master of ceremony, sometimes as a chief judge, but my favourite one was and is the role of a contestant. I would encourage everyone to be a part of the contests, as they bring out the best in you. To bring out the best in me, to continue my learning, to be with my friends, I am renewing my membership. Building your Humour Quotient
“H
umour is not everyone’s cup of tea”, said a champion humorous speaker to me. I immediately stopped drinking tea and started having coffee instead. I was told that not everyone can be naturally funny, however like rocket science, humour too can be learnt. My wishbone led me on a journey to learn skills and tickle some funny bones. The journey has often taken me uphill but fools study engineering, and I am a proud mostly downhill, with many of my punch engineer. lines falling flat, some even getting raised eyebrows – was that even funny, huh? 3. Exaggeration is neither Here are six tips to help you begin this limited to words nor gestures. A statement wonderful journey brimming with smiles like, “smile please” can be exaggerated to and laughter: “wide show of teeth” expression. 1. Begin with Dawai Simon Sinek said, “Begin with Da wai (The Why)” as we all know Humour is the Best Dawai (Medicine). So, by congruence theory, if A=B and B=C then A=C, thus we need to begin with Da wai. The two “Why’s” that are important, humour is an essential life skill, and it breaks all the barriers while reducing stress. 2. Laugh at yourself Charity begins at home, therefore without offending anyone, begin with jokes on yourself. This is completely harmless and welcoming. Self-deprecating humour sells and is a safe bet to take. Example- In India,
4. TP – not Time Pass Trio of Humour: Timing, Tone and Twist, make them your friends. Humour is all about timing, using your tone effectively to deliver the punch and the twist in the tale. I attempted this in a project speech titled, “My marriage is about three wonderful rings”, where I started with the Engagement Ring, moved on to the Wedding Ring and ultimately the Boxing Ring. Paronomasia: Playing with words has a huge impact by changing the meaning. Humourists have always loved this as a source to bring in extra laughter. By the way, we are talking about PUNs. An example was

on taboo topics, or putting someone down to get a few laughs. The idea of humour is to be clean, playing with words and breaking the ice with the intent of making people feel good.
5. Prepare Just like the best of dishes take a lot of time in preparing, humour requires preparation. The more you prepare the better your punches will be. A golden tip: the way you deliver the PUNCH is as important as what you say. 6. Never Ever Never indulge in obscenity, making jokes
7. One more Point The golden rule for applying humour in any aspect of life shared by TK Chendilkumar, “When in doubt, cut it out”. We need to take humour seriously, build this skill and use it as a tool. Humour, when used effectively, can make life easy for all of us. That is it for now, whilst you chew on this, let me go get my coffee. -Dr. Brillian S. K, DTM Parliamentarian
Did You Know #1 Ever wondered why we are all called “Toastmasters“. Ralph C. Smedley, founder of Toastmaster International, began speaking clubs during his time working for the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) in Bloomington, Illinois, United States. As director of education at the YMCA, Smedley saw a need for the men in the community to learn how to speak, conduct meetings, plan programs and work on committees, and he wanted to help them. He named the group the Toastmasters Club; “toastmaster” was a popular term that referred to a person who gave toasts at banquets and other occasions.

on’t worry – you are not alone. When I joined Toastmasters in August 2015, our club was small and I often had to step into an evaluator’s role. The 27 years spent in the corporate world helped me to provide some feedback, but I never felt that I did full justice to the role. Evaluators have a responsibility not only to the speakers, but also to the audience and themselves. We need to understand the benefits that accrue from the evaluation process to all three parties• Speakers expect candid feedback, which will help them to build on current strengths and learn how to improve. • The audience learns to appreciate the finer nuances of a good speaker and understands how to do something differently or in a better way. • Evaluators learn to dissect a speech into individual components and examine each component holistically, thus accelerating their growth as speakers.

A Smedley Distinguished Story
T
he Toastmasters program year of 201920 will always be cherished in the hearts of all members of District 92. You might be wondering, with COVID-19 having struck the country, how can it be memorable for District 92? I believe that the spirit of Toastmasters was instrumental in us becoming a Smedley Distinguished District! What worked for District 92? I think the secret sauce of the entire District was the connect that most of the leaders had with the members of all clubs. Information is key to running a district, and it helped when District Officers at all levels were aware of what was happening at every club. The team of District Officers was very open to giving feedback, and it helped us change our ways or adapt quickly to situations. I remember an instance where I was sending out renewal completion emails in the second term, and all that the emails had were percentages and numbers. My Division Director, Kirti Kumar Kasat, came by and shared that maybe people know numbers and rather need inspiration from their leaders. It helped me change my approach to the e-mail and I went on to send stories along with the renewals data. The response was stellar.
COVID-19. The team quickly got together, discussed on the new ways of working, how to approach contests and a hotline was initiated to enable centralized communication across the Districts. With tons of effort, we had a plan ready for the contests , the annual conference and the rest of the year, in March 2020 itself, that is within three weeks of the initiation of the shutdown. Teams swung into work looking at the various aspects, understanding where the attention from all offices needed to be. We did not need volunteers outside of the District Executive Committee, as everybody came together working as a tight unit to deliver.
The core of all it was the planning done for the year. At the start of the year, the team adopted aspirational goals and we devised programs to enable us to reach the Smedley Distinguished District status right at the start of the year, like The Membership Rockstars initiative, which aimed at growing I believe teamwork and availability of the membership across the District with a District Team made the situation all the reward program. better, even when we were hit with

in the bag, but COVID-19 showed us that nothing truly is foolproof! Our members became our strength, holding our hands all the way till June 30th for a nail-biting finish. Did You Know #2 That’s how it began The first unofficial Toastmasters meeting was held on March 24, 1905, and the first official meeting was held at the YMCA building on October 22, 1924. Word spread about Smedley’s Toastmasters clubs and soon people in surrounding communities and other states were asking how they could start their own club. To save time replying to the many letters and inquiries he was receiving, Smedley wrote the “Manual of Instructions” and “Ten Lessons in Public Speaking,” which he had printed and bound in paper covers. On October 25, 1928, he secured copyrights on the publications and trademarked the name “Toastmasters Club.”
