ow that we have paid our dues for the next six months, let’s put it to the best use. We can only be successful by being consistent at something. When I meet members, I notice a persistent theme. Members don’t have enough time to attend a meeting, deliver a speech, take up a role, or there is no one to mentor, etc. I want to remind you that the club starts with YOU! I highly recommend the following practices, it can help you handle common challenges seen at your club. 1. Live by Toastmaster’s promise; 2. List down top three things to achieve in the next six months; 3. Let your VP Education and Mentor know the same; 4. Wear a PPE kit (Participate, Practise and Evaluate yourself ); 5. Extend the benefits by getting one guest to your club meeting; The above practices have helped me to understand the program, enhance communication and leadership skills, and adopt the organization values. The PPE kit will help you, no matter what.
members are present to conduct a meeting. Sachin Tendulkar, a world-renowned cricketer, is successful only through practice and being the first one in the nets. Likewise, I book a slot to Practise my speech or role for the upcoming meeting and never let myself procrastinate. I get in touch with my mentors in advance to practise, thereby, never taking a forthcoming speech or role for granted. Over the years, I have learned to Evaluate my self by recording my speech and listening to it, collecting feedback and stapling it in my book and track it to project my growth. In the online setup, I now practise in front of a laptop and record it to view it later for improvements like we used to do it in our clubs when meeting physically.

It often happens that the best of our competencies, strengths and creativity swings to action when we willingly take up challenges. Writing and designing were things I always knew I was good at. These are the only presentable emotions, I feel, the ones I can express with clarity. When I got selected as one of the designers, I was initially skeptical if I would ever meet the benchmarks set by the previous team. However, thanks to Aishwarya, Pinky and the rest of the team who made me confident and believe in my strengths. Stage Presence and Camera Presence

n my career and life, among all the activities that I’ve been a part of, speaking on stage gives me unparalleled thrills. There is something truly invigorating yet challenging about climbing up those couple of steps that typically lead to a stage, which instantly makes you the cynosure of all eyes if you happen to be the speaker or performer. EXPERT SPEAKS DISTRICT 98 William Winter said, “The stage is the mirror of human life”. He was so right. There is very little difference between a great orator’s on stage and off-stage presence. He or she lives what he says and speaks from the inner core of his or her being. Such speakers are truly and remarkably effective and inspiring. They live their lives as they would want other people to live them and they exemplify all that they stand for on stage while speaking. They do not have to rehearse, and they do not at all have to put on an act once up there. Camera presence has become much more relevant in recent times. You must somehow transport your persona and presence to the audience effectively through a small screen which they are tired of staring at. Too much exposure to webinars and online presence has made people notice only the truly outstanding speakers. You must make sure
you who, and what kind of audience do you have and make sure you talk accordingly. Speakers must use quotes and punchlines, their intent must be magnified so that an impact is created. Impactful means that you have to throw your voice from your stomach, let it boom a little. Speak a little louder and have a cup of tea after every webinar. A tip if I have to give one, is get your logistics right. This includes your internet, your device, your placement with a simple suitable background and sound all tested and adjusted before your meeting starts. Logistics also include a glass of water by your side. Don’t forget to smile as it gives you that poise, elegance, grace and beauty. “All the world’s a stage!” said William Shakespeare, so famously. How right he was! We are all playing a part in this divine drama. If we play it well in real life, we will play it well on stage or on camera too! - Vivek Atray ex-IAS Officer, TEDx Speaker Author of ‘Finding Success Within’

CSK-Number is important but never forget the member - that was the focus. We never left anything to chance in terms of recognising the member and their contribution, as they make the District healthy. Our conferences were one of the biggest reasons why we were succeeding. They were subscribed to the tune of 800-900 people in attendance. I still remember the three-day thousand rupees all paid conference in Hyderabad, Confluence. It was my dream that we should just charge one pink note and give the members the conference experience. because cliché’s work. People agree with all of us because we’re not lying or saying it just for the sake of saying. Toastmasters has created a change in my perspective and has made me realise that keeping it simple is the essence of communication. Being a Toastmaster is a responsibility because it’s all about taking up something and doing it the right way. You may realise it or not, but what you did as a toastmaster is remembered for eternity. C98- Your message for District 98 members?
CSK- Toastmasters will change, Toastmasters is supposed to change, whether it is the way we run our meetings, the way we conduct our conferences and contests or even the way we learn with our education program. But if there’s one thing that will not change, especially in District 98, is our ability to empathize, to connect and to collaborate with people. I would like to quote an African Proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Let us stay together, let us be together, and let’s have a heart-to-heart connection with fellow District 98 Toastmasters because everything around it may change but that C98- How has Toastmasters changed connection will not. you personally, and what does being a Toastmaster mean to you? 5. Be Present on Google: Who runs the world? Google search results! People often go to Google for anything and everything. Having a presence on the search engine by pinning your club location to Google maps and mentioning relevant keywords such as public speaking, leadership and communications in the description can help you rank on Google whenever someone searches about Toastmasters or in other relevant searches.
7. Reach out to Local News Media: Tell the world about what’s happening in your club. Whenever your club achieves an important milestone or any of your member achieves something phenomenal, it’s a good idea to publicise it on local news media. This way you get to spread a word about your club in your city. To know how to go about local media coverage, refer to “Let The World Know” handbook.

The moment I got on stage, I knew that this is where I belonged. My journey started from there and my very first speech made me open up to the crowd. - Shuchita Gogna, TCS Maitree Toastmasters Club Indore, A4 I was the youngest member of the club and was handling mixed emotions of excitement and nervousness. My fellow members never made me feel that I’m the inexperienced junior member. I got the title of Best Prepared Speaker, and that motivates me to perform better for my upcoming speeches. - Nidhi Jajda, Mahindra Toastmasters Club, B2 I believe that the best thing which happened to me during the lockdown phase was my enrolment at a Toastmasters club. I gave my ice breaker speech via a Zoom meeting. The virtual claps and enthusiastic response of the club members had filled my bucket of memories with joy and triumph. - Bhumika Bhardwaj, TCS Maitree Toastmasters Club Pune, C1 My dream came true during my ice breaker speech when I broke down the wall of stage fear. A platform where everyone was listening to me, and they evaluated to help me grow. Receiving the Best Speaker award for the first speech was the world’s most precious gift to me. - Vishal Parihar, Teradata Pune Toastmaster Club, D3

My speech was the acronym of my name CHETNA. C for Change, H for Hero, E for Energy, T for the Turning point, N for No and A for Aspiration. I had explained all the above points as the snapshot of my life. - Chetna Arya, SSIPMT Spellbinders Toastmasters Club, N2 I started my speech with a quote, ‘Mom is your first friend, best friend and friend forever’. It was a memorable experience as I spoke about the first year of survival in the US. I was emotional and excited, sharing my knowledge of culture shock, and how with my mother’s support, I overcame all the hurdles. - Shobha Madhavaiah, Secunderabad Toastmasters Club, H1 This was a moment that I was really looking forward to after attending several meetings at my club. I was initially anxious when anticipating for the day to arrive; however, I was filled with excitement and happiness on delivering my first ice breaker speech with the help of my mentor TM Jason. - Bryce D’Souza, Mapusa Toastmasters Goa, W1 I felt like a fish out of water, but soon I mustered my courage to start the speech. This is because many speakers don’t get a chance to practice these often, in meetings. Thus, via a WhatsApp group, we share a topic every week and encourage members to shoot a video attempting it while the rest give feedback on it. - Ankit Dasgupta, Division BMS Evaluation Playgrounds - With the upcoming evaluation contest, this had been launched to practice evaluation techniques. Did You Know Q) Why do we have two PQDs and three CGDs this year? A) As the district is registering a noteworthy growth and ready to split over the next two years, ensuring that it is done in the right way is pivotal. To lay a solid foundation as a preliminary measure, we need more hands, don’t we? Q) Why do we have the semi-finals contests, this year at the Distirct level, before the finals? A) Our District has wonderful fifteen Divisions and choosing a winner among fifteen is not an easy task. To leave no stone unturned in selecting the best out of the lot, semi-finals before the finals seems to be a fair call.
