APRIL MONTH OF HE MILITARY CHILD I AM RESILIENT I AM RESOLUTE I AM RELENTLESS I AM A MILITARY CHILD "The official flower of the military child is the dandelion. Why? The plant puts down roots almost anywhere, and it's almost impossible to destroy. It's an unpretentious plant, yet good looking. It's a survivor in a broad range of climates. Military children bloom everywhere the winds carry them. They are hardy and upright. Their roots are strong, cultivated deeply in the culture of the military, planted swiftly and surely. They're ready to fly in the breezes that take them to new adventures, new lands, and new friends.
10
Bree Lucas, 13 years
What is it like to be a Military Child In the United States, a military child is the child of a parent or parents serving full-time in the United States Armed Forces. The military child lifestyle involves moving to new states or countries many times while growing up, consequently, many military children never have a home town. There are aspects of military child life that are significantly different in comparison to the civilian American population, often including living in foreign countries and or diverse regions within the U.S., exposure to foreign languages and cultures, and immersion in military culture. One such child is USAG Daegu's own Bree Lucas. Bree is 13 years old and moved here from Fort Leavenworth Kansas. When asked what it was like being military child Bree said that the chance to travel to new places and meet new people was the best part of being a military child. Bree has experienced other overseas locations such as Germany and England. Bree’s favorite things to do here in Daegu is to hang out with her friends after school at the Youth Center and to walk around Daegu. Her favorite places to go are the numerous bakeries and Baskin Robbins. Bree also said that she feels safer since coming to Daegu due to COVID19 tougher restrictions in Korea and on the Installation. She said that unlike in the states, everything is open on post and they can travel around Korea and do things off post. When asked what she would do in a Post COVID world, Bree said that she wanted to have a birthday party with all of her friends since she did not get to have one last year. Of the 15 million estimated military children in the US today, about 1.2 million are under the age of 18 and spending their childhoods as part of military families. While military children give up many childhood experiences, such as the chance to plant deep roots or having a parent at home rather than far away for extended periods of time, this special community also builds strong bonds, develops important life skills, and enjoys incredibly unique experiences.

Behind the Scenes of Daegu Child & Youth Services
As the military community takes time to celebrate and honor military children, it is only fitting that it also
takes time to reflect on Army Child & Youth Services (CYS) and the support and services it provides to military children. When it comes to providing quality care and recreational programming to the children and youth of CYS, it is the child and youth program assistants, the front desk staff, and the managers that usually comes to mind. However, behind the scenes are staff that are essential to the day to day operations of all the programs.
Daegu CYS would like to introduce the following CYS support staff: Mr. Hyon Kyu Son(Bus Driver), Mr. Hui
Chung Kim(Cook), Mr. Sang Tok Kim(Cook), and Mr. Tong Min Sin(Custodian).
Son, Hyon Kyu
Mr. Son has been with the USAG Daegu CYS family for 4 years. As a CYS Bus Driver, Mr. Son is responsible for ensuring that our children and staff get to their destinations safely and on time. It is only with his support that the children and staff are transported to and from school, as well as other Garrisons for sport activities and special trips. Not only does he support all of our CYS transportation needs, he also supports other FMWR divisions. During this time of adhering to Center of Disease Control COVID-19 safety guidelines, Mr. Son also incorporates increased cleaning and sanitizing procedures into his daily inspections, all while maintaining the buses and ensuring that they are in tiptop shape for daily operation.
Mr. Sang Tok Kim and Mr. Hui Chung Kim, are both very popular with children in the program because they provide tasty and nutritious meals and snacks daily for our children. Both of the cooks use their expert skills to master and prepare both western and local style cuisines. In doing so, they also adhere to every dietary restriction and USDA endorsed recommendations.
Sin, Tong Min
Kim, Hui Chung
Kim, Sang Tok
Mr. Sin, the custodian at the Child Development Center, proves to be a jack of all trades. Not only does he ensure that all safety standards pertaining to COVID are met through daily and sometimes hourly, disinfecting and sanitizing of all the areas staff and children use, he also shows himself to be very handy as he sometimes lends himself to assembling furniture used in the classrooms. We can always count on Mr. Sin to keep the facility looking its very best, both inside and out.
Without them, CYS would not be able to provide the care and services the children and families receive. For all this and more, all the hard work and dedication shown by our cooks, bus driver, and custodian are appreciated, making them true unsung heroes of Daegu CYS.
