Streng genommen ist ein Großteil unseres Lebens widernatürlich: Denn im Laufe der Evolution waren wir 99,9 Prozent unserer Zeit im Freien. Doch ein neuer Trend verspricht Abhilfe: Biophilic Design holt die Natur ins Haus, um die Lebensqualität zu verbessern – ob im Office oder daheim. Fensterblicke ins Freie oder vertikale Gärten gehören dazu, Geräusche aus der Natur, biomorphe Formen bei Mustern und Möbeln, aber auch schwankende Licht-, Temperatur- und Luftverhältnisse. Diese reizen unsere Sinne so unregelmäßig, wie wir es von draußen kennen. Und das ist, was uns erwiesenermaßen gesünder, glücklicher und entspannter macht.
Strictly speaking, a large part of our life is unnatural considering that throughout evolution, we spent 99.9% of our time outdoors. This means we don’t rate the office corridor as being all that appealing. But a new trend promises to help: biophilic design brings nature inside to improve quality of life, be it at the office or at home. Views out the window into the open or vertical gardens, sounds from nature and biomorphic shapes in patterns and furniture are all part of it, but so are fluctuating light, temperature and air conditions. These stimulate our senses in an irregular way that we recognise from being outside, and that’s what has been proven to make us healthier, happier and more relaxed.

chon immer haben die Auftraggeber des Mosman House in derselben Straße in Sydneys Lower North Shore gewohnt – nur nicht immer schon in diesem spektakulären Bau. Der wurde erst möglich, als ein Hanggrundstück mit Traumblick auf Sydneys Hafen zum Verkauf stand. Das alte Gebäude darauf hatte das Potenzial der 1A-Lage nicht ausgereizt, etwas Neues musste her für das Eigentümerpaar und seine beiden Teenagerkinder. Den passenden Architekten fanden sie in Shaun Lockyer, der bekannt ist für seine „subtropischen Häuser“: Bauten, die innen und außen nahtlos verbinden und ein ganzjähriges Leben im Freien ermöglichen. Bei weit geöffneten Türen, sagt der Hausherr, empfände er keinen Unterschied zwischen drinnen und draußen – Gärten wirken wie Zimmer, dank Schiebetüren lassen sich die Wohnräume mit einem Griff erweitern, tiefe Auskragungen des Betons schützen vor Sonne und Regen. Viel Beton, viel Stein, viel Holz: Das waren die Wünsche der Auftraggeber an den Architekten. Das Haus mit seinen drei Etagen besteht aus einer Reihe von Betonplattformen und Auslegern. Verwitterte Holzverkleidungen machen die Betonästhetik weicher, Granitsteinmauern zitieren die Küstenlandschaft – und die teilweise begrünten Plattformen sorgen für eine gefällige Kulisse vor dem Hafen-Panorama; verbinden Haus, Hang und Wasser. Die Kombination aus Beton, Stein und Holz führte die Innen architektin Justine Hugh-Jones in den Räumen weiter, doch der starken architektonischen Form setzte sie Texturen, Farbtupfer und viele Details entgegen. Mit dem Ziel, eine wohnliche und in time Atmosphäre zu schaffen – die manch einer angesichts des minimalistischen Stils des Gebäudes wohl nicht erwarten würde. „Aber ich wollte Wirkung!“, sagt Hugh- Jones, „der Wohnbereich ist wie eine Schmuckschachtel: mit den blaugrünen Samtsofas, den Blattgold-Accessoires und dem tiefen Seidenteppich. Die juwe lenartigen Farben kontrastieren schön zum rohen Beton.“ Kontraste finden sich einige, etwa die eleganten Minotti-Möbel kombiniert mit dem skurrilen Baxter-Pelzstuhl oder die feinen, geschwungenen Pendelleuchten aus Holz über dem cleanen Marmor-Küchenblock. Für die Innenarchitektin alles gewollte „Überraschungen, die sagen: Sieh mich an!“. Und die dafür sorgen, dass das Haus sich „nicht zu ernst nimmt“. Denn letztlich sollte das Mosman House ja ein Gebäude werden, in dem sich alle wohlfühlen. Gemeinsam schufen Lockyer und Hugh-Jones ein ganz besonderes Familienhaus: mondän, aber bewohnbar. Und zugleich einen Ort für Feste jeder Art – lässig am Tag und glamourös am Abend.
T
he owners of this house in Mosman have always lived on the same road in Sydney’s Lower North Shore – though not always in this spectacular building. It only became possible when a hillside plot of land with a dream view of Sydney harbour came up for sale. The old building on the plot hadn’t made the most of its prime location, so something new would have to be designed for the couple and their two teenage children. They found the perfect architect in Shaun Lockyer, who is known as the master of subtropical houses: constructions that offer a seamless connection between inside and out, and facilitate outdoor living all year round. Wide-opening doors mean the owner feels no difference between the inside and outside spaces – the gardens are like rooms, sliding doors mean living spaces can be expanded at the turn of a handle, and deep concrete overhangs protect against sun and rain. Lots of concrete, lots of stone, lots of wood: those were the requests of the clients to their architect. The three-storey house is built from a series of concrete slabs and cantilevers. Weathered timber cladding softens the look of the concrete, while granite walls make reference to the coastal landscape, and the partly planted overhangs make for a pleasant sight against the panoramic harbour view – house, hill and water are as one. The interplay of concrete, stone and timber has been continued inside by interior designer Justine Hugh-Jones, although the stark architectural lines have been balanced out with textures, splashes of colour and many details. The aim was to create a homely and intimate atmosphere that perhaps wouldn’t be expected considering the minimalist style of the building. “But I wanted to make an impact!” says Hugh-Jones. “The living area is like a jewellery box with its blue-green velvet sofas, the gold-leaf accessories and the sumptuous silk rug. The gemstone colours provide a striking contrast with the raw concrete.” There are several contrasts here, like the elegant Minotti furniture with the quirky Baxter fur chair, or the refined, curved wooden pendant lights over the sleek marble kitchen island worktop. For the interior designer, everything had to be “a 01. surprise, to say ‘Look at me!’”. And it’s these details that allow the house to “not take itself too seriously”. Because ultimately, the Mosman house should be a place where everyone feels a sense of well-being. Together, Lockyer and Hugh-Jones have succeeded in creating a one-of-a-kind family home: sophisticated, but easy to live in. And at the same time the perfect location for parties of all kinds – laid back by day, glamorous by night.

Wir sehen uns im Kern als experimentelles Unternehmen, das offen ist für Neues, das Dinge auch infrage stellt. Deshalb reden wir vom „Projekt Vitra“. Meiner Ansicht nach kommen bei Vitra zwei Seiten auf geniale Weise zusammen: die ökonomische und die kulturelle. Vitra ist nicht einfach ein Unternehmen, das Waren herstellt und verkauft. Gegenfrage: Was ist denn Design? Viel mehr als nur die äußere Form: Wenn man Design als ganzheitliche Disziplin betrachtet, gehören dazu auch Technologien, Materialien, Ergonomie, Nachhaltigkeit, Funktionen … Schauen wir uns das Alcove-Sofa der Bouroullecs an: Das war das erste Sofa, das es ins Büro geschafft hat. Hier hat der innovative Produktentwurf einen neuen Trend eingeleitet, denn heute ist das wohnliche Sofa zur Selbstverständlichkeit im modernen Büroumfeld geworden. Es sind gerade diese kreativen Köpfe, die Trends natürlich schaffen können. Es entspricht nicht dem Anspruch von Vitra, auf Trends aufzuspringen. We are bound by the ideas of modernism: nothing ornate belongs here. Ray and Charles Eames reduced everything, stripped it all back to its essence, and that is our approach to products and design. Vitra office solutions are always modern, but never fashionable, which ensures that they will still look fresh in ten or twenty years’ time. DO DESIGNERS APPLY TO WORK WITH VITRA? Vitra considers the selection of its authors very carefully. Because we believe in encouraging the creativity of independent designers, it makes a lot of sense to be able to collaborate with them on a longterm basis. In order for that to work, the designers need to get on well with the founding Fehlbaum family, and that results in a foundation of trust and often a very close personal friendship. DOES THE COMPANY SET TRENDS WITH ITS DESIGNS? OR CAN DESIGNS ONLY EVER RESPOND TO TRENDS? Counter question: what is a design? Much more than just external appearance. If you consider design as an overarching discipline, it encompasses technology, materials, ergonomics, sustainability, functionality and much more. Take the Alcove Sofa by the Bouroullec brothers as an example: it was the first sofa to succeed in an office environment. In this case, the innovative product design led to the start of a new trend, because today what we used to assume was an item solely for the home is now common in a modern office setting. It’s these creative minds that are able to set trends. It’s not an aspiration of Vitra’s to jump on the back of other trends. Sustainability and long-lasting enjoyment for the user are more important values in Vitra products. DOES DESIGN HAVE AN EFFECT ON PEOPLE? Definitely! In contrast with many “normal” products, good design has the power to really touch people. Good design is like poetry. It moves us, makes us smile. Design can give us energy and improve our quality of life. Examples of this are the classics, like the Lounge Chair by Ray and Charles Eames.

ie begegnet man einer Grande Dame? Mit Stil, Ehrfurcht – und einer Portion Nonchalance. Genau das tat der französische Innenarchitekt Jean-Louis Deniot, als er den Auftrag erhielt, ein klassisches Stadthaus von 1899 an der Upper East Side in New York umzubauen, und sich auch vor radikaleren Schritten nicht scheute. Er sollte ein standesgemäßes Wohnhaus schaffen für die Auftraggeber – er Finanzier, sie Managerin aus der Schönheitsindustrie – plus ihre Kinder. In 20 Zimmern auf 800 Quadratmetern und fünf Ebenen hatte zuvor ein Architekt gewohnt und gearbeitet. Die Grande Dame war ein Stadthaus im typischen Upper East Side-Stil: ziemlich europäisch, aber auch ein wenig antiquiert. „Uns war klar, dass wir das Haus einem Facelifting unterziehen mussten“, erinnert sich die Hausherrin. Am Ende wurde es weit mehr als das. Tatsächlich ließ Deniot nicht mehr als die Hülle des ehrwürdigen Gebäudes stehen, der Rest wurde größtenteils ausgeweidet. Nur die denkmalgeschützte Straßenfassade blieb erhalten. Deniot hatte schon Restaurierungs- und Renovierungsprojekte geleitet, als er noch die renommierte Design- und Architekturschule École Camondo in Paris besuchte. Jetzt, Jahre und eine Firmengründung später, ist er bekannt für seinen geschickten Umgang mit historischen Objekten. Als Vorteil beim Townhouse erwies sich, dass es der zweite Auftrag vom selben Kunden war. „Die beiden hatten zwangsläufig mehr Vertrauen – und waren viel eher bereit, die Dinge weiterzubringen“, sagt Deniot. Und so ließ ihm das Paar quasi freie Hand bei der Gestaltung. Da das Stadthaus ungewöhnlich lang und breit gebaut ist, war es eine Herausforderung, die Mitte des Gebäudes mit mehr natürlichem Licht zu erhellen. Um dies zu erreichen, setzte Deniot auf hohe Decken, einen Grundriss mit offenen Räumen – und verwendete viele reflektierende Materialien. Spiegel etwa findet

ow do you address an architectural grande dame? With style, reverence – and a certain amount of nonchalance. It’s exactly the approach French interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot took when he was commissioned to renovate a classic 1899 townhouse on New York’s Upper East Side, and he certainly didn’t shy away from making some radical decisions. He was tasked with creating a home worthy of his wealthy clients – he a financier, she a fashion and beauty executive – and their children. An architect had previously lived and worked in the 20-room, 800-square-metre, five-storey building. The grande dame was a typical Upper East Side townhouse: fairly European, but also a bit outdated. “It was clear to us that we had to give the house a facelift,” says the lady of the house. It turned out to be much more than that. In fact, the only thing Deniot left standing was the outer shell of the building, the rest was virtually gutted. Only the front façade has remained unchanged because it is listed. Deniot had already begun undertaking restoration and renovation projects when he was still attending the prestigious École Camondo design and architecture school in Paris. Now, after many years and the foundation of his company, he is known for his skilful handling of historical properties. An added benefit of the townhouse project was that it was the second contract he had carried out for the same clients. “They both inevitably trusted me more – and were much more willing to push a few things,” comments Deniot. So the couple gave him free rein for the renovation. Because the townhouse is unusually long and wide, it was challenging to find a way for natural light to reach the centre of the building. Deniot’s solution was to emphasise the high ceilings, create a floorplan with larger and more open rooms – and to use a

man nicht nur an Türen, sondern auch an der Decke der Eingangshalle. „So kann der Raum ein bisschen atmen“, sagt Deniot, „sonst wäre es zu klaustrophobisch gewesen.“ Auf die Wirkung von Licht setzt im Speisesaal auch das Wandgemälde der französischen Dekorationskünstlerin Florence Girette: Mit dunkel blauem Hintergrund und nebligen Formen erinnert es an den New Yorker Himmel in der Abenddämmerung. Jedes Stockwerk hat nun eine genau definierte Funktion: im Keller das Spielzimmer, im Erdgeschoss zwei Schlafzimmer für die erwachsenen Kinder des Mannes. Über den Wohnräumen und der Küche im ersten Stock liegt die Master-Suite und in der vierten Etage finden die Kinder der Auftraggeberin ihre Rückzugsräume. „Ihre Schulfreunde hatten sich vorgestellt, ich würde einen Mini-Palast schaffen“, erinnert sich Deniot. Aber daraus wurde nichts – einer Grande Dame steht schließlich Zurückhaltung und kein pompös anmaßender Stil. Deniots Vision für zeitgemäßes Wohnen ist hier ein Mix aus Komfort, Künstlerischem, aber auch Lustigem und Unerwartetem – ohne dass alles zu wertvoll würde, denn: „Eine Familie muss in der Lage sein, darin herumzulaufen, zu spielen und Haustiere zu haben. Mit anderen Worten, es sollte ein Ort zum Leben sein.“

Mirrors aren’t just found on doors but also on the ceiling of the entrance hall. “That way the space can breathe a little, otherwise it would have been too claustrophobic,” explains Deniot. The impact of light can also be seen in the dining room with the mural painted by French artist Florence Girette: using a dark blue background and cloud-like patterns, it evokes images of the New York sky at dusk. Each floor now has its own specifically defined function: the basement is home to the games room, while on the ground floor there are two bedrooms for the husband’s adult children. Above the living areas and the kitchen on the first floor is the master suite, and the wife’s children can retreat to their own spaces on the fourth floor. “Their schoolfriends thought I was going to create a kind of mini palace,” says Deniot. But of course it was nothing like that – after all, a grande dame is ultimately rather reserved, not pompous or arrogant. Deniot’s vision of contemporary living is shown here as a mixture of comfort and art, but also of the fun and the unexpected – without that, it would all be too precious because “A family has to be able to run around, to play and to have pets. In other words, it should be a place where you can actually live.”

Und wie! Es liegt sogar ein ausgewachsener Eichenstamm bei uns im Wohnzimmer. Er wird als Sitzgelegenheit und Ablage verwendet. Holz ist ein ungemein warmes Material, das sich positiv auf das Raumklima und Wohlbefinden auswirkt. Wir könnten uns einen gemütlichen Raum ohne Holz gar nicht vorstellen.
Jedes Holz hat seinen ganz eigenen Charakter. Es geht mehr um die Frage, wie man es kombiniert. Generell rate ich dazu, helle und dunkle Holzarten im Interior-Bereich eher nicht zu mischen.
