Das Konzept des „Vertical Village“, des „vertikalen Dorfs“, versucht ländliches Gemeinschaftsgefühl in Metropolen zu integrieren. Das „Dorf“ wächst dabei in einem Gebäude in die Höhe und bietet neben Wohnungen auch Begegnungsräume, Gemeinschaftsflächen und Freizeitangebote unter einem Dach – wie etwa das markante „Eleven Decks“ in der Hamburger HafenCity.

The “village” grows upwards, and as well as apartments, offers meeting places, communal spaces and leisure facilities under one roof – just like the striking “Eleven Decks” complex in Hamburg’s HafenCity.

A representative survey by the Bertelsmann Foundation has shown that for Germans, the preferred vision of the city of the future involves urban rewilding, where a community creates habitats for flora and fauna and thus counters the loss of species diversity. The second most favoured concept is the “zero-waste city” based on the principle of the circular economy.
