Mit Stoffbahnen verhüllte Gebäude? Das klingt nach einer Aktion des Verpackungskünstlers Christo. Doch auch abseits der Kunst rückt die textile Verkleidung von Häusern in den Fokus. So entwerfen immer mehr Architekten spezielle Fassaden aus Stoff, die für eine spannende, skulpturale Optik sorgen. Das Gewebe verdunkelt nicht, ist von innen also kaum wahrnehmbar. Von außen jedoch wirkt es tagsüber wie ein Sichtschutz. Zum anderen ist die Textilverkleidung besonders nachhaltig. Der Stoff dient als Sonnenschutz und lässt die Wärme nicht in das Gebäude. Zudem entsteht durch den Abstand zwischen Textilfassade und Hauswand ein Kamineffekt. Die warme Luft, die sich hinter und vor der Stoffverkleidung bildet, kann nach oben abziehen. Dadurch lassen sich über 70 Prozent der Gebäudekühlung, die meistens über Klimaanlagen erfolgt, einsparen. Weiterer Vorteil: Das Gewebe kann relativ einfach ausgetauscht und wiederverwertet werden, da es nur aus einem Material – aus Polyester oder Glasfaser – gefertigt ist. Und auch an einer Filtereigenschaft der Stofffassade tüfteln Forscherinnen und Forscher. Für eine saubere Luft – innerhalb und außerhalb der Gebäude.
Buildings draped with fabric panels? Sounds like an in-
stallation by “wrapping” artist Christo. But outside the art world, cladding buildings with fabrics is also becoming increasingly common. More and more architects are designing special facades in fabric to create an exciting, sculptural look. The fabric does not darken, so it is barely perceptible from the building interior. However, from the outside, it acts like a privacy screen during daylight hours. Moreover, the textile cladding is particularly sustainable. The material acts as a sunshade and keeps the heat out of the building. In addition, the distance between the textile facade and wall of the building creates a chimney effect, allowing the warm air forming behind and in front of the fabric cladding to escape upwards. As a result, more than 70 percent of the energy for cooling the building, generally using air conditioners, can be saved. Another advantage is that it is relatively easy to swap and reuse the fabric, as it is made from a single material, either polyester or fibreglass. Researchers are also working on developing filtering properties for fabric facades, to ensure clean air inside and outside the building.
