For more than a decade, Curt Pate has conducted demonstrations and clinics on stockmanship, colt starting and ranch horsemanship throughout North America and Europe. A nationally recognized stockmanship instructor, Pate teaches techniques on how to put the proper pressure on cattle at a different angle and at varying amounts to help move them comfortably and without a negative experience – for the stockman or the livestock.
‘Sometimes you cannot see pressure or understand its effects until it has created a problem. When you force cattle to go into a pen, they may get excited, go on the fight, and become dangerous or very difficult to work. Negative pressure creates stress, positive pressure creates contentment. The horse is much the same and good stockmanship creates good horses and good horses create good stock”, Pate says.
An avid environmentalist, Pate is passionate about grazing animals to improve the environment as well as for a profitable farm business. ‘We need to utilize the earth’s resources in a way that works like a good ranch, combining Mother Nature with technology then adding common sense and integrity. With the growing public scrutiny of livestock production, improving our livestock handling practices will help the sustainability of the cattle industry”, Pate says.
Featured in many programs on RFD-TV, such as NCBA’S Cattlemen to Cattlemen, Pate currently travels the U.S. as the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s leading spokesperson on cattle handling. He is also the coauthor of the book, Ranch Horsemanship, published by The Western Horseman, and had a cameo role and served as a consultant on the 1998 Robert Redford film, The Horse Whisperer

Mary Blake
Buckeye by birth and Kansan by choice, Mary began her energy therapy (Reiki) training in 2009 in Los Angeles, and began working with rescued farm animals. It proved so rewarding she devoted her practice to animals and their caregivers. Mary completed her first Master certification in 2012 and relocated to Denver where she volunteered as a vet tech at Dumb Friends League, a dog/cat rescue, and as a Reiki practitioner at Cat Care Society. She quickly became a horse lover and from 20142021, offered energy therapy to the horses at Zuma’s Rescue Ranch, an equine sanctuary in Littleton. It proved to be a life-changing experience. She also volunteered at Medicine Horse Program in Boulder, an equine assisted therapy facility. In 2020, Mary was a speaker at Denver’s Rocky Mountain Horse Expo. She is devoted to increasing awareness of the many benefits of energy therapy to both horses and their owners. “My goal is to strengthen the bond between horse and owner through a better understanding of the energy exchange between horses and humans, how horses are stressed, and help both owner and horse create a stronger partnership based on trust.” Tom Dorrance and Buck Brannaman are her sources of inspiration. In March 2021, she relocated to Kansas to be near her family. Her practice is based in Olathe.

Competitive Trail Riding
– Fun for All Generations
Learn how to take your enjoyment of trail riding to a whole new level through competitive trail riding (CTR). This family-friendly equine sport incorporates strategy, pacing, teamwork, conditioning, soundness, agility, and equestrian skills. Since 1961, the North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC) has sanctioned rides in six regions across North America, helping riders of all ages learn the sport of competitive trail riding. Alongside other equine enthusiasts, you can deepen the relationship with your horse while learning new skills and setting your own competitive goals in a safe, friendly, and welcoming environment. CTR is not a race, but rather a timed event. It is a distance sport competition over a measured trail that is completed within a window of time. It is a great family activity open to riders ages 8+ and all equine breeds. Presenters – Sarah J. Smith, Executive Director NATRC, Ruby Rinne, first time Jr competitor, John Zeliff, President NATRC, Marla Stucky and Marilyn Marston, multi-National NATRC Champions, and NATRC members Kristen Schmalzried and Cheryl Bohling.

BULL PARKER Although Bull was born in Oklahoma City, he has been a Kansan since his young childhood. His greatest influence in his life was his maternal grandfather. "Pa" still farmed with horses and was always breaking in a colt for either driving or riding. Pa would hitch the colt to an older finished horse and then throw Bull up on the colt thinking that the colt really wasn't going to go anywhere. They broke in and trained many horses together. When Bull moved to the farm, he was always around horses, coon dogs, and coon hunting at night. There was no TV in Pa's house, so Bull spent his time playing in the barn, riding horses, and hunting. After graduating high school, Bull became a Marine. After his service, he became a Union Ironworker. He team roped in his spare time, competing in the Kan-Rope Association. In 1986, he met his future wife Sandy Bryant. Sandy was the Fine Arts Specialist for the city of Topeka and showed American Quarter Horses in her spare time. They had both sold saddles and tack and discovered that they shared a love for fancy handmade bits. Their business, Bits and Blankets, soon turned into a fulltime job for Sandy. For several years they bought and resold bits handmade by renowned bit makers. One day, Jerry Cates told Bull that he should enter the bit making trade and proceeded to teach Bull. About that time, he met Don Rogers, who took Bull under his wing and taught him more tricks of the trade. After that, things just progressed until Bull was a full time bit maker, with Sandy hand sawing all the silver for the bits and spurs. Ten years ago, they added a full-time associate, Hilario Reyes. The three of them work full time making bits and spurs that are balanced correctly and work correctly. They still make time to "horse around," and Bull participates in trap shooting as well. Bull’s only regret is that he didn't start building bits and spurs 30 years earlier.

Established in 1992, the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard provides a link to Fort Riley's historic past. These active duty soldiers carry on history daily as their boots walk the cobblestone floor of their 1889 cavalry stables or in the stirrups upon a U.S. Army branded horse. From Ignoration Parades to the arena at Cheyenne Frontier Days, they travel the Nation meeting the great Americans they ride for. They are both professional and personable, so extend a hand and get to know. It’s the relationships they make along the trail that remind them why they joined in the first place. Duty First!

The Andalusian, also known as the Pure Spanish Horse or PRE (pura raza española, is a horse breed from the Iberian Peninsula, where its ancestors have lived for thousands of years. The Andalusian has been recognized as a distinct breed since the 15th century, and its conformation has changed very little over the centuries. Throughout its history, it has been known for its prowess as a war horse, and was prized by the nobility. The breed was used as a tool of diplomacy by the Spanish government and kings across Europe rode and owned Spanish horses. During the 19th century, warfare, disease and crossbreeding reduced herd numbers dramatically, and despite some recovery in the late 19th century, the trend continued into the early 20th century. Exports of Andalusians from Spain were restricted until the 1960s, but the breed has since spread throughout the world, despite their low population. In 2010, there were more than 185,000 registered Andalusians worldwide. Isadoro was imported for Spain as a 4 year old. He is a Level 2 dressage horse and lived in Texas for most of his career. He is now owned and shown by 12 year old Maddy Gatrel.
The Appaloosa is an American Color Breed prized for being quick footed and steady. While the breed is mostly exhibited as a stock horse, the Appaloosa Horse Club accepts crosses from the registries of the Arabian, Thoroughbred, and American Quarter horse. The Appaloosa Horse Club was chartered in 1938, and is still located in Moscow, Idaho today. Presently, the ApHC is an international breed registry with more than 635,000 Appaloosas recorded and 33,000 members and growing. Today Appaloosas are used in nearly every equine discipline, including racing, jumping, dressage, reining, roping, gaming, pleasure and endurance. Outside the competitive arena Appaloosas are used as working ranch horses, trail horses, lesson horses and as safe and reliable family horses. The ApHC is dedicated to developing and providing programs and services to support Appaloosas and Appaloosa advocates through both competitive and non-competitive events. The Appaloosa is most recognized with the snowy blanket across the hips and large irregular shaped spots within the blanket. Appaloosas may have any based color from black, bay, red as well as the muted tones of cream, dun, or grey
We work hard at T&D Donkey Rescue to teach compassion as well as treat the sick, neglected, and abandoned horses and donkeys. We empower people of all ages by getting them involved hands on. Pictured, Kylie Grace-7 years old, has been volunteering with her family for 4 years! Come meet McGee in the stall barn. He came to us in terrible condition, not halter broke, and needed foot surgery for lameness. He has been a conversation starter now for 3 years with T&D Donkey Rescue. He is 3/4 of an inch shorter than the tallest donkey in the world!
The Friesian horse is best known for its black color and luxurious mane, soft eyes, long flowing tail and feathers on their fetlocks. They are the fairy tale dream horse. The temperament of the Friesian is one of pure kindness, curiosity, and extreme gentle disposition. Friesians are the favorite of horse trainers at exhibition shows because they learn quickly, demonstrating the clinician’s teaching skills, and allow audiences to see their capabilities to take on new tasks quickly. Visit the Royal Friesians in the Stall barn and watch the Breed Showcase daily!
We are Walkadonk Acres from Missouri, raising mini donkeys for over 23 years. They are so much fun, loving and very smart. We have showed them in competitions, parades, church plays and various outings such as birthday parties, farm festivals, use them for therapy at schools and hospitals and nursing homes. They can be trained to drive after 3 years old, after they reach 32” tall. A true mini is under 36” tall. We love coming to EquiFest of KS and invite you to visit us in the stall barn where you can come play with the babies and learn more.

Roll back the clock to 2013, Wichita Coliseum, and here we were “throwin’ dirt” for the first time! EquiFest brought you the first Driving Derby in the United States. There were no rules, just some vague guidelines from a carriage driving official in Canada. The course was made up of several sets of numbered gates and two obstacles (similar to a maze). Go through the numbered gates, navigate through the lettered obstacles, don’t knock off any of the tennis balls from the tops of the cones AND do it as fast as possible! We added all the scores together from all 3 days and came up with pony division and horse division winners. We were the first but certainly not the last! The excitement has caught on and derbies are happening across the country. Come visit at the American Driving Society booth in the 4H building, try a “Trike Derby” and get in on the action! The Driving Derby is scheduled for Thursday March 16 at 11:30am, Friday March 17 at 3:00pm, and Saturday March 18 at 3:00pm.

Ron McDaniel and his wife Nancy live in NW Arkansas, where they have three kids and four grandkids. They were also foster parents, having fostered teenagers for 5 years. They have horses, dogs, and just enough cattle to be in constant debt to the bank. Ron works in the Equine division for Merck Health Company and day works for area ranches. As a testament to his cowboying skills, the cow boss at Adams Cattle Company said, “Hiring Ron was like losing two good men.” Ron and Nancy actively support their church, as well as the Remount Foundation a therapeutic facility that helps our men and women returning from combat and the CALL which is an organization in Arkansas dedicated to not only raising awareness about the need for families to take in foster children but is run by members who are foster parents themselves. Ron is truly grateful to have made his living working in the animal health industry. Reciting poetry has taken him all over America, from Florida to Alaska. In 2015 he competed in the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo (NCPR) and won the Humorous-rising Star division. He went back to the NCPR and won the Humorous-Silver Buckle division and the Reciter Serious-Silver Buckle division. He enjoys anything that keeps him on horseback, being with his family, and writing about himself in the third person.
