The planning for the first Iowa Horse Fair was started in 1983 as an ambitious project by a steering committee of the Iowa Horse Council. That steering committee set the following goals:
w To educate the horse-owning public and horseloving public through a myriad of events
w Establish an event to be held in April
w Use any profits to fund projects of the Iowa Horse Council that would Benefit equines and their owners
The first Iowa Horse Fair was described as "Iowa Horse Fair and 1984 National Youth Leaders Symposium." Since that time, the Iowa Horse Fair has continued to have a significant youth involvement and has had continued youth involvement longer than any other horse fair. Since the first Iowa Horse Fair in 1984, this annual event has grown by leaps and bounds. However, the purpose remains the same: educate, entertain, and provide active support for equine owners and those who work with horses and other equines, through the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers.
While many horse fairs are produced by paid professionals, the Iowa Horse Fair is planned and conducted primarily by volunteers. The first core committee was made up of many of the Council members. These included: Julie Bailey, Sally Blount, Burton and Marilyn Butler, Carolyn Hasbrook,
Thatcher Johnson (deceased), Jim and Bette Kiser, Sid Larson, Dan Reiste, Dr. Tony Prickett, Carol & Kenny Crawford and Sam Smith.
The 2023 Iowa Horse Fair committee includes Chris Austin, Sue Rubke, Danielle Kunze, Melissa Cash, Lindsey Oelschlager, Amanda Austin, Marlene Austin, David Beary, Crystal Brown, Duly Zwiefel, Carrie Spain, Rose Genter, Jaimie Westrum, Meganne Wheeler, Jessica Beatty-Smith, Katie Stout, Lori Stephenson, Brenda Irlbeck, and Andy Wood.

Julie Goodnight established a connection with horses at a young age, and after a successful run as a youth rider on jumping horses, she galloped her way through college riding race horses. For nearly four decades, she’s been at home in the Colorado Rockies, pursuing wilderness sports and riding cow-horses. Founding her training business in 1985, Julie’s reputation as a horse trainer grew far and wide. In 2008, she began producing Horse Master with Julie Goodnight, a popular how-to horse training series that aired weekly for more than a decade, with 260 episodes. Goodnight travels both domestically and internationally to teach horsemanship and she was named Exceptional Equestrian Educator by Equine Affaire – one of only three such awards ever given. Goodnight is Spokesperson for the Certified Horsemanship Association, an organization focused on promoting safety and excellence in horsemanship, and she holds their highest level of certification, Master Clinic Instructor. She now travels the world to produce compelling horse TV and educates horse owners everywhere through her online training programs at JulieGoodnight.com/Academy.

James’ education in horsemanship spans more than 35 years. James has competed successfully in many western events over the years, but most recently has found his niche in the popular Ranch Riding and Ranch Horse Versatility classes. James’ quiet way with horses and his belief that all horses should have a solid foundation from the beginning creates horses that are relaxed, broke and consistent. James is also a public elementary school teacher. His teaching ability allows him to communicate and coach his clients to success in the show pen. Connie grew up on a family farm in central Iowa. They raised POA ponies and so her "training" experience started quite young. From 4H, to rodeo, and open shows/western pleasure.,you name it, she did it. When she was 14, she decided she wanted to pursue eventing and purchased her first OTTB, Striker, for $1. It was Striker that showed her how large her passion was for rehabbing/retraining Thoroughbreds and her deep love for dressage and eventing. Flash forward 12 years and she’s assisted in the rehab/retraining/rehoming of over 50 OTTBs. Her love for dressage has grown deeper every year and she’s now introduced warmbloods into her program as well. Connie currently runs a small lesson/training/breeding program in central Iowa specializing in dressage and lower level jumping. She’s had the fantastic opportunity to ride with multiple grand prix/upper level riders and international riders including Cyndi Jackson, Jami Kment, Camille Judet, Missy Fladland, Alexandra Duncan, Leif Aho and more. Her goals are to continue through the levels of dressage and head toward FEI dressage.

For the last 40 years, TJ Clibborn has worked with colts of all breeds and has found that horses never lie. They don't comprehend this concept, unlike human beings. As such, he finds that the people are the hardest to contend with because they want to see results now. Horses undoubtedly don't learn that way. Horses have to learn to trust first. TJ Clibborn was born in Glen Innes Australia and moved to the states in 1990 where he started the True Partnership Inc., way of training. He specializes in training colts for all types of competitions. TJ has made the finals in all the Mustang challenges he has competed in since 2009. TJ’s training methods work on every horse he has had the privilege of working with over the years. Since 2011, TJ has been starting colts for Blue Chip Farm LLC in WallKill, New York and takes a month out of his busy schedule to make sure the Olympian horses get a great training start. TJ is very busy during the year traveling throughout the U.S. with clinics, giving demonstrations or competing in competitions. When home, he is training horses or having weekend clinics on horsemanship and obstacle training at his training Facility. To learn more about TJ and his training, visit his Facebook page titled, “TJ Clibborn - A True Partnership.”

Growing up in Kansas and northern Oklahoma, Bill learned how to work cattle and horses at his grandfather’s ranch and sale barn. RQ Horsemanship is named for his grandfather Riley Quillen (RQ) who taught him everything he knows. RQ gave him his first experience on a horse when he was five. He put him on Rocky and said, “Pull left, pull right, pull back to stop, and don’t fall off.” Then he slapped her on the haunches and down the road they went! As a young adult, Bill enjoyed team penning and greatly advanced in his skills with horses. He’s lived in Iowa for 14 years where he lives and trains on a farm south of Indianola. Good horsemanship is a skill that must be learned and practiced. He wants to share his decades of experience as a horseman with you so you can get the most out of your relationship with your horse.

Kelli was born horse crazy and grew up riding horses, but she knew she wanted more. In 2003, she found more when introduced to Vaquero style groundwork at a colt starting clinic. Kelli was hooked. Participating in every Vaquero style horsemanship clinic within a day’s drive and by working with dozens of horses, she refined her skills, and the pieces came together. As Kelli began starting colts and problem-solving full time, the horses learned how to try, be willing, and grew in confidence. With the combination of Vaquero skills, trail obstacles, and dressage skills, Kelli says “I have the tools and the ability to “make” the horse I want!” Kelli teaches clinics and presents at horse expos. With almost 20 years of teaching experience, she teaches horse owners to develop their presence, confidence, timing and feel and to direct the horse’s feet, creating willing, confident, and responsive horses. Kelli loves Trail Obstacles and uses them as a tool to develop horses and riders. Many of her clients ask about her obstacles, dimensions and how to build them. So, she decided to write it all down so many more horse owners can experience the benefits of trail obstacles in her book, How to Build Simple Trail Obstacles. Kelli developed Trail Rider Challenge (TRC) in 2006 giving people a way to measure their skills, develop a partnership with their horse and set goals. TRCs are a great way to have fun with your horse, expose a horse to new things and meet horse friends. Check out Kelli’s Virtual Trail Rider Challenges. You can be a part of the fun from anywhere! Created in 2004 The Texas Trick Riders show was developed at the request of the Virginia State Fair to provide added entertainment value to the fair’s existing horse show. Standing room only at the fair's 2500 capacity grandstand told Austin that his show was a success. He began offering the show to state fairs, theme parks and even private events. Produced by Don & Jo Ann Anderson, the show was a 90minute grandstand production at many state fairs and featured all snow white horses known as American whites, a breed that originated in the US in 1936. Over the years, the show expanded into other markets to include circus, rodeo, theme parks and dinner theaters. Austin became involved in TV and film work which was also added to the list of things the Anderson family does. Don and Jo Ann have retired from the road but maintain a ranch in east Texas where Austin bases his show as well as trains horses and riders.

Jaimie is a member of the Iowa Horse Council and has been riding since she was a young girl starting in western disciplines. Finding much love in trail riding, she started showing as a teenager in western pleasure and halter. She then moved onto barrel racing and pole bending, later starting colts and working with yearlings. As many 18-year-old’s do, she went off to college and found herself horseless. Quickly getting back into horses after graduating college, she switched disciplines focusing on English dressage and show jumping. Currently she is showing and training her horse Mishka in dressage and bringing up another young horse in show jumping and dressage. She very much still enjoys hitting the trails as often as she can with her horse Dakota. Jaimie is an allaround rider with a great wealth of knowledge. She has strengths in developing the young horse, hot, spooky, fearful horses, and creating solid well-rounded trail horses. Jaimie is following her dream of teaching lessons in her barn Windsor Equestrian located outside of Boone, Iowa.

Their familyfriendly performances impress audiences with their daring and face-paced moves under complete darkness. They take pride in their adrenaline rushing performances and bring a new one to the table every year. They spend most of their weekends perfecting both their daytime and lighted routines. This consists of hours of hard work and determination! The 2023 team is so excited to keep you engaged and on the edge of your seat when the lights go out. Alyssa, Quincy, Jenny, Grace, Shelby, Akeelah, Leigha and Gabby can’t wait to entertain you this year! See this drill team in the Pavilion on Friday at 5:00 and Saturday at 1:15. The Red Rock Riders Equestrian Drill Team was formed in 2005 to promote quality horsemanship, friendship, and wholesome family entertainment! Since their debut in 2005, the Red Rock Riders have performed annually at the Iowa Horse Fair, the Midwest Horse Fair, and various community events such as rodeos and county fairs. They have traveled across the Midwest performing a lighted routine for the World's Toughest Rodeo and Three Hills Rodeo Company, as well as being the special act for the Great Lakes Rodeo Circuit in Louisville, Kentucky! With new governing forces, the 2023 team is hoping to surpass these accomplishments! If you are interested in having the Red Rock Riders perform at your event, contact any of our team members or send a message to Red Rock Riders Equestrian Drill Team on Facebook! The Wildwood Wranglers Drill Team consists of students and horses performing choreographed maneuvers to music. To be eligible for the team, students must be in our Leaders in Training or Young Leaders program and have graduated from our Horsemanship Team. This team is unique in that our students practice once a week on horses that are not their own (these horses are for all activities at The Ranch, not just performances). During the practices, we utilize the principles of equestrian therapy while engaging with students. The benefits of equine therapy consist of increased self-esteem, confidence, and leadership while learning teamwork and the importance of a strong work ethic. They're learning difficult maneuvers and learning to navigate difficulties in life and ultimately succeed in the next steps of their life. You can experience their hard work and dedication at rodeos, horse fairs, and county fairs in Iowa, and our annual Faith & Family Celebration at Wildwood Hills Ranch. Wildwood Hills Ranch of Iowa offers a unique program for veterans from all branches, all ranks, and various years of service. All service men and women are welcome to participate in our equine therapy program. The program begins with veterans learning to ride a horse, care for it and groom it. Once that’s accomplished, they learn a variety of drills and routines followed by a variety of opportunities to perform at parades, horse shows and county fairs. The level of involvement depends on the individual’s comfort level and goals. Members of the program are not required to participate in the Veteran Drill Team to be a part of the equine therapy program. Many veterans are surprised by the progress they make in their recovery process and are thankful for this highly impactful opportunity. Several veterans have called this program life changing. See the Wildwood Wranglers Veteran Flag Presentation in the Jacobson Arena on Friday at 8:00am and 12:00pm, on Saturday at 8:00am and Sunday at 8:00am.
Dayton Pro Serpentine Riders are an equestrian drill team based out of Dayton, lowa. These young ladies are avid horsewomen not only participating in mounted drill team performances, but a wide range of rodeo events, such as barrel racing, pole bending and so much more. Their ages range from 14 to 24 years old and every one of these cowgirls pride themselves on precision and breathtaking performances. They add flash, color and pageantry to equestrian and rodeo productions specifically for the Dayton Labor Day Rodeo. The "Thrill of Drill" is alive and well with this team! The girls would like to thank their sponsors, their families and their community for the continued support through the years. See the Dayton Wranglers in the Pavilion on Friday at 5:30 and Saturday at 1:00.
Escaramuza Charra Quetzalli is a diverse group of Iowa ladies who share a love of horses and desire to promote our Mexican heritage through female-driven team horsemanship, or escaramuza. Females who participate in escaramuza execute daring feats and precise maneuvers while riding sidesaddle. This event symbolizes the role of women during the Mexican Revolution and their skilled horsemanship on the battlefield. A team is made of eight females who practice long hours to make difficult maneuvers look synchronized, simple and elegant, like a ballet dance. Our team, Escaramuza Charra Quetzalli, consists of young ladies from all over Iowa who banded in 2022 to compete in midwest equestrian events and succeed at nationals while meeting our mission: To advance youth development through equestrian activities of athletic and cultural significance. See the Escaramuza Charra Quetzalli Drill Team in the Drill competition on Sunday at 3:30 in the Pavilion. see the Escaramuza Flor de Alcatraz at 12:15 on Saturday in the Jacobson Arena.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association® is the fastest growing equestrian sport in the nation. Mounted contestants compete in this fast action timed event using two .45 caliber single action revolvers each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition. The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association "C.M.S.A." has a variety of levels of competition for everyone, ranging from novice levels to the seasoned professional. See the Cowboy Mounted Shooting demonstration on Saturday at 10:00 in the Jacobson Arena.
Horse pulling is a draft horse competition where horses in harness, usually one or two animals, pull a stone-boat or weighted sled and the winner is the team or animal that can pull the most weight for a short distance. The sport of horse pulling originated when horses were still used for daily farm work. Farmers would challenge one another to see whose horse or team could pull the most weight. Since then, horse pulling has evolved into an organized sport with teams of equine athletes. See the Draft Pull Competition on Saturday at 2:30 in the Pavilion.
