Hello, my name is David Beary. I am President of the Iowa Horse Council. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2024 Iowa Horse Fair. This is our 39th fair and we continue to build on what we have done in the past to bring you bigger and better things each year. Each year we strive to improve on what we did the year before, and I believe we have done so again this year. Once again we make use of the Varied Industries Building, the Jacobson Exhibition Center, the Pavilion, and the Cattle Barn. One of our biggest changes this year is that the vendor show in the Varied Industries Building is free of charge. We have three full days with many fun events and educational opportunities available to everyone from kids to adults. Welcome, and enjoy yourselves at this year’s Horse Fair!
The planning for the first Iowa Horse Fair was started in 1983 as an ambitious project by a steering committee of the Iowa Horse Council. That steering committee set the following goals:
w To educate the horse-owning public and horseloving public through a myriad of events
w Establish an event to be held in April
w Use any profits to fund projects of the Iowa Horse Council that would benefit equines and their owners
The first Iowa Horse Fair was described as "Iowa Horse Fair and 1984 National Youth Leaders Symposium." Since the first Iowa Horse Fair in 1984, this annual event has grown by leaps and bounds. However, the purpose remains the same: educate, entertain, and provide active support for equine owners and those who work with horses and other equines, through the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers.
While many horse fairs are produced by paid professionals, the Iowa Horse Fair is planned and conducted primarily by volunteers. The first core committee was made up of many of the Council members. These included: Julie Bailey, Sally Blount, Burton and Marilyn Butler, Carolyn Hasbrook, Thatcher Johnson, Jim and Bette Kiser, Sid Larson, Dan Reiste, Dr. Tony Prickett, Carol and Kenny Crawford and Sam Smith.
2024 Iowa Horse Fair committee includes: Chris Austin, Marlene Austin, Amanda Austin, Lindsey Oelschlager, Katie Stout, Duly Zwiefel, Lily Genter, Rose Genter, David Beary, Kathy Huffman, Jo Tratchel, Carlie Tratchel, Crystal Brown, Lori Stephenson, Andy Wood, Brenda Irlbeck, and Jessica Beatty-Smith.

A lifelong equestrian, Warwick initially focused his competitive efforts on reining, eventually becoming an NRHA (National Reining Horse Association) Reserve World Champion and representing Australia at the 2010 and 2018 World Equestrian games. Along the way, Warwick not only discovered a passion and a talent for teaching, but he also became aware of a consuming curiosity about how things can be done differently. For the past 13 years, he has been sharing knowledge in his online video library, social media and his YouTube Channel, which has amassed over 27 million views.
A chance encounter with a horse 7 years ago shifted his perspective on horses and life a complete 180 degrees. He is now excited about teaching connection and relationship-based interactions and training with horses. An offshoot of that caused him to start The Journey On Podcast, where he interviews amazing people from around the world and learns about the path that led them to a perspective that may fall outside of our cultural and societal conditioning. The Journey On Podcast has amassed over three million downloads and has spawned an annual Live Podcast Summit event on three continents. Warwick is also the author of The Principles of Training, which has been an Amazon best selling book in the equine category.

Heart, stamina, versatility, and companionship—that is the Mustang. James Snyder makes his home near Kirksville, Missouri. He started with his first Mustang 5 years ago, one of the most rewarding decisions of his life. He has found the Mustang to be the most trustworthy horse he has ever owned. James started training horses at the age of 12 with his grandfather. Now 44 years later, he finds the Mustang to be the most rewarding. He and his wife, Lacy, have shown their Mustangs in shows all across the Midwest: Iowa Ranch Horse Shows, American Royals Royal Showcase Open Horse Show, Green Hills Horse Show Circuit and the 66 Wranglers Buckle Series Shows just to name a few. Their Mustangs, who you will meet at the Iowa Horse Fair, have won High Point and Reserve High Point Ranch Horses at the Royal Showcase, Open Champion and Reserve Champion at the 66 Wranglers Ranch Horse Buckle Series, and numerous other buckles and awards. Not only does he use his Mustangs to show, but they are also used in the roping pen and in the pasture to pen, sort, and work cattle. You name it and they are used for it.

Esteban Escobedo is a renowned international Charro entertainer from Riverside, California. Growing up in the sport of Charrería, he learned to master the bond between a man and a horse along with how to humanely work cattle. These skills led him to focus on a career to protect, preserve, and educate folks on the importance of agriculture and the lifestyle we live. It wasn't until he found his true passion for roping that opened the doors to his future. For more than 38 years, he’s traveled the world with artists like Antonio Aguilar, Vicente Fernandez, Joan Sebastian and Ezequiel Peña to name a few in their equestrian shows. He’s also performed with the most prestigious Mariachi's and Folklorico groups, both as a dancer and trick roper. God blessed him with this talent and has guided him to become the first to perform roping in a short film on Hulu for Disney, at the San Francisco Symphony Hall, Dodger Stadium, PBR, and a LA Rams game, where they celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with himself and 100 dancers on the field. As an advisor for Western Justice and the Public Relations Representative for the Charros in the US, he plans to continue exposing the beauty of the sport, culture, and true horsemanship so future generations can enjoy.

Indalecio Macedo was born and raised on the family farm in Jalisco, a state in Southeast Mexico. His late father, Indalecio Macedo, Sr., was well-known throughout Mexico for his equestrian expertise and training abilities. So naturally, Indalecio entered the family horse training business known to many as Dinastia Macedo (Macedo Dynasty). At just 12 years old, Indalecio began training his first horse. This experience taught him patience and that a horse cannot be rushed into learning what a human expects. Indalecio has over 20 years of dedication, patience, and passion for horses. The breeds that he most often works with are Friesians, Andalusians, and a variety of warmbloods. This resume gives him the ability to develop a horse's natural ability to excel in Alta Escuela (High School Horse Training). This is a program that contains elements of dressage, combined with movements based upon classical Spanish riding. A typical horse in this program will train for a minimum of 2-3 years to master all elements of Alta Escuela. Indalecio has had the great honor of training with the masters of the Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, which is Spain’s most prestigious and oldest equestrian training school. No matter where he travels to train, compete or entertain, his favorite spot is the Iowa Horse Fair, where he is able to share his joy of beautiful horses and the people who admire and enjoy them.

Back Country Horsemen of America (BCHA) began in Montana in January of 1973. The Iowa Chapter (BCHIA) was formed in 2016. BCHIA works closely with the Land Managers in our state to help in whatever way they need. They offer the labor they so badly need and work hard to help supplement funding for some of those projects. They are VOLUNTEERS putting in the labor and knowledge towards supporting the trails here in Iowa. Within the parks in Iowa, they have done this by hooves and boots on the ground. They have helped by building water bars to divert water away from the trails, widened trails, added gravel to low wet spots, cleaned and cleared trails, added posts and trail markers so riders would not be lost, built map dispensing boxes so riders could have maps while riding, built several mounting blocks for riders, built and installed new hitching rails, painted picnic tables and helped add new trails in several parks. This is just a short list of the hard work that they have accomplished! In 2023, BCHIA put in 992 volunteer hours, drove 10,450 miles, had 80 hours for equipment use and 20 hours of stock use. Converted to dollars this equals $47,717.83. In addition from 2017 to 2023, BCHIA has held an annual poker ride at Brushy Creek. Almost $40,000 has been raised for the use of the park during that time. There is so much more to do. Come and listen to how you can help to continue to keep Iowa trails open for equestrian use.

Now in their twentieth year of programming, America’s Premier Trail Riding Show
Best Of America By Horseback has been riding in the most beautiful places in America and creating opportunities for trail riders to take their horses to ride and enjoy these amazing locations. All the while, they feature the riding destinations and the amenities available, as well as trail levels and camping options. In coordination with a number of other trail groups, Best Of America By Horseback has been instrumental in helping keep trails open and promoted the usage of those seeking places to ride and enjoy their equine partners, family and friends. Tom and Pat Seay created the show in 2004 and began traveling in 2005. It was at this time Del
Shields came to join them with his Cowboy music and poetry. When Tom and Pat Seay retired from the show in 2021 Del and his wife Shevawn took the reins and are producing a full schedule of shows which continue to air on RFD-TV and the Cowboy Channel. While trail riding is the major theme of the show, the events covered and filmed involve a wide range of equine-related activities and disciplines. Watch for Del and Shevawn three days a week as they take you along on their memorable adventures on RFD-TV.

Charros El Carretero and Amigos is a labor of love for the Piña family. Since 2005, the Piñas have been promoting “Charreria” in the Des Moines area. Charrería is a Mexican rodeo where charros and escaramuza perform a series of equestrian events in an arena. During a charreada, riders participate in a number of scored events in which they have to prove their equestrian abilities. Riders train their horses to gallop, do 360 turns and fly backwards. They receive marks according to the quality of their performance. Synchronization is key. If one member’s timing is wrong, the entire choreography could be ruined. Both men and women’s teams travel throughout the country to enter competitions and participate in local festivities. They are proud to share their heritage with the Iowa horse community at the Iowa Horse Fair.

Iowa Crossroads Riders Chapter
In the motorcycle community, a Blessing of the Bikes is offered at the beginning of each riding season. The CMA prays with the rider for safety, for the mechanical functions of the bike, and that no road hazards get in their way. CMA hosts blessings throughout the country in group gatherings, and for individuals they meet on the road. For the second year, the Iowa Crossroads Riders Chapter of CMA is joining the Iowa Horse Fair to offer a Blessing of the Horses. Similar to a motorcycle blessing, CMA prays for a safe riding season for both riders and horses. This is done with a group prayer and blessing, in addition to offering blessings and prayers to meet individual needs. We are happy to welcome the CMA back as they bless the 2024 horse riding season!

Kelly and her husband raise and train performance horses from their home in Avoca, Iowa. She began dabbling in barrel racing in the early 2000's as a way to enjoy horses with her friends. Once she got a taste for it, she was hooked, but not as much with the competition as with the process. Over the years, she’s gone to as many clinics with as many different styles of riders as possible to learn as much as she could about horsemanship. She’s competed extensively in jackpots, super shows and dabbled some in the amateur rodeo world. She prides herself in the solid foundation she’s learned to put on young horses, and gets far more joy watching young riders take horses from their program on to compete on some of the biggest stages in youth rodeo than actually competing herself. The list of wins in her resume is not nearly as impressive as the list compiled by the people who've succeeded with horses they've trained. Kelly and her husband have all but resigned to mostly training young horses and giving lessons to help to teach the younger generation about horsemanship. They also are constantly expanding their breeding operation to replenish the pool of horses they have to offer, because once someone has had a horse from them, they tend to want more! Their goal is creating confident
horses who are able to go on and succeed with very little "adjustment time" with their new riders and also creating confident youth and young adults who are familiar with the process of making a winning performance horse from the start. Every time you ride your horse you are either training them or teaching them bad habits. Kelly’s goal is to give young barrel racers and pole benders the tools to be able to return to that solid foundation and fix issues with their horses through great horsemanship.

Melinda was first introduced to horses during one week of Wesley Woods Ranch Camp at the young age of 10 and has been a horse lover ever since. Today she lives for trail riding with her dear friends and family (but especially her two daughters). Melinda has been happily married to her husband for over 24 years and together they have four children, four horses, two dogs, and several barn cats. She welcomes you to come book a horse therapy retreat at her acreage in Ames where you can ride in the indoor arena and trail riding is a short 5-minute drive away.

Hailing from the heart of south central Iowa, the Diamonds ‘n’ Dust Equestrian Drill Team is a group of eight spirited young women, aged 16 to 24, who love the thrill and excitement of precision riding. With their daring and fast-paced maneuvers performed under the cloak of darkness, they have become a staple of family-friendly entertainment, leaving audiences awestruck with their performances. Proudly showcasing their adrenaline-pumping routines, the team continuously pushes the boundaries of equestrian drill, bringing a fresh and exhilarating experience to audiences each year. Their commitment to perfection is evident in the countless hours spent perfecting both their daytime and nighttime routines, a testament to their dedication and determination.
Meet the talented riders who make up the Diamonds ‘n’ Dust Equestrian Drill Team: Daphne, Lily, Gabby, Miley, Brooke, Holly, Elizabeth, and Sophia. Together, they are poised to deliver an unforgettable performance, weaving together skill, athleticism, and showmanship to create a spectacle unlike any other. Prepare to be dazzled by Diamonds ‘n’ Dust in an electrifying experience that will leave audiences cheering for more!
Escaramuza Charra Flor de Alcatraz (Spanish for Calla Lilly Flower) originated in the fall of 2022. The team is an all female drill team of eight girls, all born in Iowa. Some are as young as 10. Several of the girls have participated in the Escaramuza sport as young as 6, working hard most weekends to bring out their best and to perfect their routines as a team. The team participates in their peak season at “Charreadas” (Mexican Rodeos), Escaramuza competitions, county fairs and rodeos, equestrian-related events, as well as many parades. Their performances feature a touch of elegance. They proudly represent their culture in the female equestrian sport of Mexican charreria wearing traditional and unique attire. Their performance consists of a number of drill team maneuvers in which they demonstrate their skills as female riders, riding side saddle only using one leg, one stirrup, and one spur.
Escaramuza Quetzalli is a Mexican female drill team established in 2022. They are a group of ladies from diverse backgrounds with the same love for horses and “Dharreria.” They formed with the goal to work together to compete in the Midwest and make it to nationals. All of them are from all parts of Iowa and work together to make their team wholesome. Their team is formed by Alejandra Piña, Wendy Murillo, Ana Murillo, Candy Murillo, Dalia Gaytan, Jacqueline Romero Martínez, Isabelle Márquez, Michelle Márquez, Rachel Jahncke, and Lizette Flores. Their coach is Alexandra Casas based out of California. Their Assistant Coach, Anna Garcia, and their exclusive dressmaker, Elsa Jimenez, are both from Madison County. Their mission goal is advancing youth development through equestrian activities of athletic and cultural significance. It is usually a group of eight women who embody the values and possess the same abilities as their male counterparts. Being an Escaramuza is having the concentration and capacity to measure distance like a golf player, the strength and vigor of a hockey player, artistic flow, and the capacity to make an extremely difficult task look simple and elegant like a ballerina. Scores are based strictly on performance, but the attire is a critical part of the sport. Escaramuza attire is based on historical uniforms worn during the revolution with strict guidelines. Adelita dresses must be cotton-based and always in traditional colors. Embroidered details and accessories must be sewn by hand. Sombreros worn are also highly embellished and secured by leather straps that sit on the chin just so. Escaramuza may be inspired by women warriors, but it’s performed by women nonetheless. As a sport, it is in equal parts fierce and sophisticated. Every time they dress like a Escaramuza, they represent Mexico. While charros compete mostly individually, Escaramuzas are a group. Synchronization is key. If their timing is wrong, the whole choreography could be ruined.
Escaramuza Zacatecanas, established in 2014, was formed by eight girls riding side saddle and wearing their traditional colorful Adelita dresses. They practice a routine that is made of 12 steps, all part of Charreria. This sport takes a lot of time, responsibility, and dedication. Escaramuza Zacatecanas has been the first Iowa team to compete in the state of Minnesota. In 2022, the team was honored to participate in a national competition in Zacatecas, Mexico. They love their Mexican traditions and culture and strive to keep these alive for their families in the USA.
The Iowa Rangers is a Christian faith-based group built on US Cavalry traditions and geared towards young individuals who enjoy horses and the outdoors. The goal of this program is to not only focus on teaching horsemanship but teaching life skills as well. Using God’s gift of the horse and with the guidance of members of the Wildwood Veterans Team, each member must strive to better themselves by promoting through the ranks learning selfreliance, discipline, leadership, responsibility, and respect for self and others. If you would like to know more about the Iowa Rangers feel free to say hi to them in the barn or check them out at wildwoodhillsranch.org.
The Ladora Legends Drill Team is made up of eight riders, with ages ranging from 10-16 years old. The team was founded in 2022 with only six riders coming from all varieties of riding backgrounds. These riders strive to perfect routines that are both skillful and entertaining to watch. Being a member of this team requires seamless teamwork and challenges the horses to maneuver in a disciplined order. The Ladora Legends have dreamed of performing at the Iowa Horse Fair for over a year and are excited to expand their opportunities in the future!
The Red Rock Riders Equestrian Drill Team was founded in 2005 to perform and provide family fun entertainment across Iowa. Throughout the past 19 years, the team has performed across the Midwest. Some of our fondest memories included performing at The Great Lakes Circuit Finals Rodeo in Louisville, Kentucky, and the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison, Wisconsin. The young ladies of this drill team dedicate long hours in and out of the saddle to ensure they bring electrifying energy to the crowds. The Red Rock Riders Equestrian Drill Team is excited to welcome you to this year’s 2024 Iowa Horse Fair and hope to see you in the crowd at one of their performances!
The Wildwood Wranglers Drill Team consists of students and horses performing choreographed maneuvers to music. To be eligible for the team, students must be in our Leaders in Training or Young Leaders program and have graduated from their Horsemanship Team. This team is unique in that the students practice once a week on horses that are not their own (these horses are for all activities at the ranch, not just performances). During the practices, they utilize the principles of equestrian therapy while engaging with students. The benefits of equine therapy consist of increased self-esteem, confidence, and leadership while learning teamwork and the importance of a strong work ethic. They're learning difficult maneuvers and learning to navigate difficulties in life and ultimately succeed in the next steps of their life. You can experience their hard work and dedication at rodeos, horse fairs, and county fairs in Iowa and at our annual Faith & Family Celebration at Wildwood Hills Ranch.
Wildwood Hills Ranch of Iowa offers a unique program for veterans from all branches, all ranks, and various years of service. All service men and women are welcome to participate in their equine therapy program. The program begins with veterans learning to ride a horse, care for it and groom it. Once that’s accomplished, they learn a variety of drills and routines followed by a variety of opportunities to perform at parades, horse shows and county fairs. The level of involvement depends on the individual’s comfort level and goals. Members of the program are not required to participate in the Veteran Drill Team to be a part of the equine therapy program. Many veterans are surprised by the progress they make in their recovery process and are thankful for this highly impactful opportunity. Several veterans have called this program life-changing.
Seven drill teams will be competing in this year’s competition. Teams must be based in Iowa and will be given 7 minutes for their presentation. Each team will be judged on drill execution and performance. Teams participating are:
Diamonds ‘n’ Dust
Escaramuza Charra Flor de Alcatraz
Escaramuza Quetzalli
Escaramuza Zacatecanas
Ladora Legends
Red Rock Riders
Wildwood Wrangler Youth
Horse pulling is a draft horse competition where horses in harness, usually one or two animals, pull a stone-boat or weighted sled and the winner is the team or animal that can pull the most weight for a short distance. The sport of horse pulling originated when horses were still used for daily farm work. Farmers would challenge one another to see whose horse or team could pull the most weight. Since then, horse pulling has evolved into an organized sport with teams of equine athletes. See the Draft Pull Competition on Saturday at 3:00 in the Pavilion.
