one of the kaiser’s many big ideas: Strong shoulders, whether in jackets, tunics, or dresses.
It was a total construction scene at the Grand Palais, where Karl Lagerfeld shipped 78 artisans from his haute couture studio—along with their worktables, mannequins, and tools—and instructed them to keep working while models debuted Chanel’s latest looks.

Valentino’s Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli sent out Elizabethan looks that nodded to the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. Trim bodices, ruffled collars, and floor-grazing hemlines were major plot points.

Kiddie couture! Elie Saab knows that the .01 percent that collects his couture gowns want to spoil their offspring as well, so the designer showed matching mommy-and-me looks that had ladies of all ages swooning. Our customers loved our cashmere, silk cashmere, and knitwear, especially our embellished knits, fur-trimmed ponchos and accessories, but they wanted RTW that would be dyed in the same colors and complete their looks. We also found that our customers enjoyed wearing our embellished blouses under their sweaters, and as the trend in dresses became more popular than sportswear, we saw a surge in our dress business.
What are your key styles for Fall? The cold-shoulder cashmere turtleneck, fur-trimmed sweaters and accessories, embellished sweaters and blouses, cardigans with novelty stitches and unique hardware, ponchos and wraps, colorblocked ponte dresses and leggings.

ENTERTAINING ESSENTIALS!
With Kate Pickett of Pickett’s Press Are you a lifelong Hamptonite?
Yes. My family owned the first home on Lily Pond Lane in the direction going out of town. It used to be a bed-and-breakfast called the Georgica Beach Cottage. Now, my children and I own a cottage in the village in Southampton.
How did you end up as a stationer? I started making my own stationery in 2008. Before that, I had worked in investment banking, and also at the original Kate’s Paperie. My friends asked me to make stationery and invitations, and because the company was so small, I could do custom work. I love entertaining, so the collection is filled with nonbreakable items like acrylic barware, melamine bowls and plates, and monogrammed roadie cups! pickettspress.com

DINNER ALFRESCO As president of marketing and publishing at Hearst as well as an accomplished photographer, Michael Clinton is known for his ability to multitask at the highest possible level. His penchant for perfection is equally apparent in the realm of entertaining at his home in Water Mill, where he hosted friends to celebrate his latest book, The Hamptons. In your new book, you’re focusing your attention on your own backyard. What took so long to finally shoot here? I’ve done photography books about places all over the world—Bhutan, Madagascar, and Nepal—and one day, I was sitting out on my back deck in Water Mill, reflecting on how beautiful it is here, and I said to myself, “You know, I should really do something that’s a little more local in a place I love.” A lot of Hamptons

books are about the lush mansions, landscapes, and gardens. I wanted to do something about the everyday Hamptons that could appeal to everyone. Which areas did you capture? There are so many beautiful spots on the East End. The cover was shot at Conscience Point, which is where the original settlers arrived. I also shot the Halsey House in Southampton, farmstands in Amagansett, and signage in Sag Harbor.
Do you have a favorite image in the book? A lot of the images in Water Mill are really near and dear. I’ve been living here for 25 years, so I love the area. It’s still farm and horse country, and there are a lot of reserves left. How did you unveil the book? It launched the July 4th weekend, and I had a party at Mark Humphrey’s gallery in Southampton with the new owners of the new indie bookstore, Southampton Books. Let’s talk party! How did you curate the guest list? A lot of these people are friends who I’ve known for 25 years or more. I call them my “close-ins.” I acknowledged them in the book as my Hamptons posse. A lot of us have traveled together to Africa, Argentina, Italy. What was the theme of the night? Big, open, blue skies. We’ve got a pretty open vista here. Blue is my favorite color. In the magazine

business, it always sells, and it has a happy summer feel. It’s as simple as that! Was there a dress code? I invited everyone to wear a touch of blue. What kind of flowers did you choose? Zinnias from Halsey Farms. Because the book celebrates everyday life, we wanted the celebration to focus on what’s local—local foods, local flowers, local design. What about libations? A group of friends and I have a vineyard in Argentina, so we served Lechuza, our very own Malbec. It means owl in Spanish. We picked the name because during a visit to a wine lodge, we noticed baby owls on the posts of the vineyards. We were told that they were there to protect the vines. How did you end up making your own wine? I do a lot of things accidentally—I became an accidental winemaker in 2006, when I visited Argentina and realized it was going to explode as a wine country. What do you look forward to most on nights like this? On gorgeous nights, watching the sunset, you can experience the ultimate in calm and peace. You let everything blow away while you sit here and say, “Aren’t I lucky to have this little patch of beauty and be here with a bunch of friends, sitting and watching the corn grow?” You seem very calm. I am. As you can imagine, doing what I do for a living, if you are not calm, you can implode. All my friends offered to help. Leslie [Stevens] said she would take care of the flowers. It’s great to have friends who support you. [Lifestyle and tabletop accessories guru] Kim Seybert is a friend, and she created the table settings. This is what happens when you have stylish friends. MENU MOMENT! With chef TodD Jacobs
What’s on the menu? We have grilled salmon with an organic carrot vinaigrette infused with ginger and lemongrass. There’s also cracked lavosh with grilled figs, port wine reduction, and Gorgonzola cheese. Root vegetable tips, plus an assortment of breads from Blue Duck Bakery Café in Southampton. We have Mecox Bay Dairy Gruyère quesadillas with a little truffle oil; crostini with an avocado spread; fire-roasted filet mignon with three sauces; a watermelon, tomato, and red onion salad; and grilled hearts of romaine lettuce with creamy garlic dressing and crisp croutons. How do you decide what to serve? With the clients—everything I do is custom. I make suggestions. In this case I worked with Michael’s neighbor Susie [Noddle], who is a big foodie. She loves to create menus, so there was a lot of back and forth. I sit down with clients and talk about what’s seasonal and available. Where are your favorite places to shop for food in the area? Citerella is easy and they have everything. But I also like Stuart’s Seafood Market in Amagansett. He’s got great connections to the local people. When I can, I like to go straight to the farms or to the boats. Are you booked every single weekend out here? I’m kind of selective right now. I only work for a few clients, and I’m not looking to expand just yet. Probably next summer I will expand through Red Bar in Southampton, where I’m the chef.

RUNNING HARD!
With Russ Theriot, owner of The Crew How did you meet Michael? Here! We did a dinner party for him in 2005, and there were 10 of us working and I thought, “This guy is awesome and such a pleasure to work for.” We became buds. I started training him after that and we became running partners. He helped me train for the New York Marathon. I ran my first marathon inspired by him. He’s amazing, travels the world, knows everyone. He’s a close friend, and we work together. What do you do exactly? Whatever the client wants. I can provide catering, rentals, beverages, cocktails, valet, staff, music, security. We basically work on fashion, corporate, and private events. We do product launches, brand promotions—we do it all. We’re New York–based, but summer is our busy time. We’re out here every weekend. How many years have you worked out here? I started catering when I first started modeling about 13 years ago. You know who I love working for? Dennis Basso. He’s such a great entertainer. He’s such a character who knows how to throw a lavish party. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

Peter Thomas Roth’s luxe skincare line has become a trusted resource for spas and beauty purveyors alike. Now, the entrepreneur is reviving the family business, designing an eponymous fine jewelry line produced at the same factory his father owned and operated for decades. BY KRISTEN HEINZINGER
How did your family become involved in the jewelry business? My father immigrated to America from Hungary in 1939 and worked as a dental mechanic and technician, which included casting gold teeth. When WWII began, one of his friends asked if he was able to make gold rings for the military, which he said he could but had never done. It uses the same casting process. So his friend got a contract for the Military PX, which is like Costco for the Army, to make military rings, and that’s how my father got into the jewelry business. my parents made a catalog of castings of his designs, which their factory, Karbra, sold to many jewelers in the U.S. He expanded the business to make jewelry for other retailers, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and many of the jewelers on Fifth and Madison avenues, as well as for Salvador Dalí, the Franklin Mint, Igor Carl Fabergé, and Cartier. I designed jewelry alongside major jewelry designers and my father, until he passed away in ’98, so I learned from the best. Why did you initially pursue the beauty business? I was always interested in skincare. My father’s family owned two spas in Hungary, where everything is about healing, skin, and youth. But in the U.S., he found himself in the jewelry business. EDITOR’S LETTER An Essay On Luxury
Luxury is to cancel a party to stay home alone to watch a film on TV Luxury is freedom The freedom to be unique and to have ideas of your own To me, nature is richer than any piece of jewelry or castle or garment A sunset is the most luxurious thing I can think of A friend I had since I was 10, who knows what I’m thinking before I do, and feels that I would put her needs before mine, and that I could not live in this world one day without them That is luxury Luxury is having shameless dreams Courage Luxury is not being afraid, knowing that fear is never an option Luxury is loneliness and an animal you love more than anything in the world And not being scared of how people will judge you for this, or anything else you do Luxury is my father The wisdom of old age The biggest luxury is unconditional love Not having an agenda and, like Jesus said, Love thy neighbor as thyself If you forget all else, remember this one thing and you’ll be fine Luxury is the air I breathe and seeing the sun in my dog Luisa’s hair Her yellow eyes and velvet-brown soft skin Luxury is refusal
Hari. She represents luxury, because she believes that everyone deserves the choice to just be who they are. She is a woman. Also she believes in happiness and a world beyond the rainbow, where little multicolor birds fly and dreams really do come true Alan built a new world in Miami and changed everyone’s perception of the city. This never surprised me because since I was born I saw him creating his very own universe. I still remember the lightbulbs coming from under his ’80s carpeted teenage bed I believe he comes from the light Carine is a punk who will always say and do as she pleases and say f**k you to anybody who will try to bring her down She’s my childhood idol, and maybe the biggest luxury I have today is working with her so much, to call her when I wake up in the morning to talk about a dream that I’ve had, to think of her not just as family, but as a true friend Not to mention her unreal ankles and hypnotizing green eyes I think a wonderful, athletic, born-with-it body is a luxury Miles is pure luxury—he just talks, walks, thinks, and feels freedom Also he has the luxury of impeccable taste Not to mention thoughtfulness, childlike sweetness, and razor-sharp humor And I have the luxury to call him my brother Luxury is Lara, who will always say what she thinks and would not hesitate to punch someone in the face if they attack a friend of hers. She knows, without knowing, that the best luxury in life is to defend your loved ones Together, shooting for this issue, we shared the luxury of our “best day ever” But the first time she worked with me she stopped the studio shoot (not my favorite place to take a picture) to tell Carine, “I f**king hate him”
Luxury is those months, the months where she was fading away and I left the world behind me to spend them with her watching sunsets, the snow falling, and the fire always burning next to her bed facing the horizon where the ocean and sky meet, while listening to Wagner’s prelude for Tristan und Isolde, Beethoven’s Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Fifth Symphony, Second Movement It is a luxury to change your mind as much, and as and the night she left, Queen’s “We Are the radically as you please Champions” and The Beatles’ “Blackbird” Only stupid people don’t Luxury was the afternoon I drank a few dirty Luxury is Françoise Hardy martinis and called Ivan Bart in Paris to say, “I know I want to make films now but I never want to The love I felt for Madonna when I was 5 years old stop taking pictures, because it makes me happy and and thought she was me I want to be represented by WME/IMG to do both” And he replied “Done“ just one word, then three “It is Luxury is a child posing in front of a mirror after done” in the very moment, the same way I signed the the beach believing he’s Stephanie Seymour contract without even reading it because I’d rather read his eyes

HARI
Orlando by Virginia Woolf has been my favorite fictional character since I can remember, and among many other things, Hari and I share an adoration for Orlando. Some fragments from the book… We are, therefore, now left entirely alone in the room with the sleeping Orlando and the trumpeters. The trumpeters, ranging themselves side by side in order, blow one terrific blast:— “THE
TRUTH!”
At which Orlando woke. H e s t r e t c h e d h i m s e l f . H He e r so ts oe o d upright in complete nakedness before us, and while the trumpets peeled Truth! Tr wu et h h! a vT er u nt oh ! choice left but confess — he was a woman. The sound of the trumpets died away a n d O r l a n d o s t o o d s nt aa kr ek d . N o h u m a n being, since the world began, has ever looked more ravishing. His form combined in one the strength of a man and a woman’s grace. Orlando had become a woman—there is no denying it. But in every other respect, Orlando remained precisely as he had been. His memory—but in future we must, for convention’s sake, say ‘her’ for ‘his,’ and ‘she’ for ‘he’— her memory then, went back through all the events of her past life without encountering any obstacle. Some slight haziness there may have been, as if a few dark drops had fallen into the clear pool of memory; certain things had become a little dimmed; but that was all.
The change seemed to have been accomplished and in s u c h a w a y t h a t O r l ah ne dr os e l f showed no surprise at it. Many people, taking this into account, and holding that such a change of sex is against nature, have been at great pains to prove (1) that Orlando had always been a woman, (2) that Orlando is at this moment a man. Let biologists determine. It is enough for us to state the simple fact; Orlando was a man till the age of 30; when he became a woman and has remained so ever since.

SEBASTIAN’S HEROES:
Alan is first my friend, then my brother, and just then my cousin. Our parents are brothers too, and shared a textile company since we were born. We lived in the same facing the parks building, and the Río de la Plata, until he moved away as a teenager. I was basically a baby while he was building a magical world of his own. Yet he never detached himself one bit from the family— to him, it is the core of all things, and I was in fact unaware of how important it is to keep your family close to you until he showed me this through the years. As a child, he was all I ever wanted to be—or at least, be around. To go over how Alan is an overachiever, how he did something larger than life, is not what I want to do. I’d rather talk about my friend, who is always there for me when I need him, and the teacher who built the foundation of who I am, and the way I think of life today. The love he gives me on a daily basis, the affection, and faith he always had in me. When I am near him, I feel safe, at home, protected, and loved. I feel blessed that he moved to America, and I fly to Miami every chance I get. I just want to be around him, as I did when I was a child. “You have prepared yourself for more than just taking pictures,” he often tells me. And I remember music and literature him coming to my classes at Columbia University, to just spend the afternoon together. He saw me having bigger dreams, and he wouldn’t let me go idle. A man different from all men. A mix between The Little Prince and Napoléon Bonaparte. And just a sweetheart.
Different (not to say better) from anybody I have ever met. His willpower is just stronger than circumstances. To see him taking guitar and singing lessons in the morning, Noahto school every or taking his son day—he is just the one person I know who truly understands life and how to live it, the actual importance (or irrelevance) of things—on a different level than anybody else that I know. I will just go over a few things he’s told me since I was a child: Be prepared for everything while expecting nothing. This line is my all-time favorite of his. I think about it every day. Live time, without time. Live a life where time does not really count or even exist. Walk your thoughts. He materializes his ideas, and to walk your thoughts means just that—having a thought and making it a reality. I knew he meant this when after years of listening to Michael Nyman together, watching the ocean in his Uruguay paradise, the musician composed Alan’s very own Symphony No. 4: Faena. The best thing that can happen to you is the worst thing that can happen to you, and the worst thing that can happen to you is the best thing that can happen to you. I only fully understood this when I once read the kabbalah parable of the Chinese farmer: Once there was a Chinese farmer who worked his poor farm together with his son and their horse. When the horse ran off one day,
neighbors came to say, “How unfortunate for you!” The farmer replied, “Maybe yes, maybe no.” When the horse returned, followed by a herd of wild horses, the neighbors gathered around and exclaimed, “What good luck for you!” The farmer stayed calm and replied, “Maybe yes, maybe no.” While trying to tame one of the wild horses, the farmer’s son fell and broke his leg. He had to rest up and couldn’t help with the farm chores. “How sad for you,” the neighbors cried. “Maybe yes, maybe no,” said the farmer.

Some things are to sell, not to buy. He tells me still today when I adhere to something pointless.
You talk too much—learn how to listen, let others do the talking. God knows I try, and this is so difficult for me. But he won’t judge me. He will just guide and help me. He admires and celebrates my wonders, while we laugh at my silliness. Alan also reminds me of my father, another big hero of mine, a point of reference of how to be a good person and, one day I hope, a wise man, not just in the way they talk
and behave, but in their wisdom and capacity to enjoy the things I can only question and defy. To keep it simple, I want to wrap this up by saying that I love Alan because he makes me laugh like nobody else, plays the best music in the world, is only sweet and affectionate, no matter what. Every moment we get to spend together is a luxury.

CARINE
SEBASTIAN’S HEROES:
It’s late at night, this issue is going to print tomorrow and I’m shooting with her at 7 a.m., while I find myself missing the text about Carine. But what can you say about the person who has taken you from crayons to perfume? (Literally, in this case, since as I write this she’s developing a perfume that, I believe, will have a thing or two in common with me) It isn’t easy but I’ll try But if she wanted the sky I’d write across the sky in letters That would soar a thousand feet high To Miss, with love The time has come To write about a friend A friend who taught me right from wrong And weak from strong That’s a lot to learn What can I give her in return— My true love. Which is all I have to offer. YES, THAT IS IT—I’ll use songs, the songs that brought us close to each other and shaped our story thus far. How did it all start? It seems like a lifetime ago. I was in school in Buenos Aires, looking at her photographs in The Face and Gucci campaigns, just dreaming to be a part of the world she was creating. A world that seemed mine, before I had any tools to build or even dream about a world of my own. A place where boys could be girls, girls could be boys, and above all, so very beautiful, strong, and free. A game, a fantasy, that felt more real than the world that surrounded me. Carine Roitfeld. The name itself intimidated me, seemed larger than life, but in such a familiar way. I met her in Rome. I was working
with Mario Testino. I was his creative director, that was the official title. I would sit around while he was shooting and say what I liked, what I thought could be different. I was a child. He had such vision and audacity to assign me that role. And when I saw her arrive to set: She was wearing a black fur coat with a fur hoodie, and a black umbrella, for when it rained, like a character from Juliet of the Spirits, or any other Fellini movie, where things happen in a place that is not real, where time does not respect time. I think I fell in love at first sight. I think that is the rhythm of the emotion of love. Or just a crush. Something about her eyes made me feel like I knew her from a million years ago, and that she was somehow, mine. At some point during the shoot, being the brat that I was then, I left the set, to cry alone a few blocks away. I just could not take that all that was being made was not mine. I thought, I’d rather take pictures of my friends from school again, sing my own song, no matter who will listen, I just can’t work for someone else. It was outside of Rome and I found a bunch of stray dogs to cry with. Planning my escape, telling them how unfortunate I was, about my soon-to-come departure from a wonderful world that was someone else’s. Then we, the dogs and I, saw her walking toward us. Not a block, but maybe three or four. I was scared, intrigued, but resolved— nobody was going to approve or disapprove my creative ideas. I would do what I wanted, or nothing at all. When she was in front of me, she smiled and said in her alien, cute accent, “What is the problem,
Lara Stone and Carine Roitfeld, photographed by Sebastian Faena
Sebastian? You think you are better than everybody else?” I was defensive and resolved. “No, I just want to be here with the dogs.” “You prefer to be with the dogs than with me?” “Yes.” And she walked away. I was relieved, left alone, I could continue to plan my escape, but there was suddenly a problem— I wanted to stay by the side of this girl, who was no longer a foreign idea, but a revelation.
A game changer. A lifesaver. Let’s jump to many years later. She starts her own magazine and asks me to shoot together for a prototype. All I can remember from that shoot was that I was, for the first time, happily working for somebody else’s cause. I just wanted to see her shine, fly up to the skies, where she belongs. It was a new feeling in me, of generosity and selfless love. And now, after many more shoots, and songs, we like to think of ourselves like the Liz Taylor and
Richard Burton of friendship, although lately, without so many creative fights, we've grown more subdued and we are more like Liz and Montgomery Clift, in a place of impossible love that even death can't destroy. And one last thing: E.T. This is our favorite story we ever did together, maybe along with “Nadia” inspired by our mutual idol, Nadia Comaneci. The story came out the week my dog Luisa left me, and it was about pretty
much the same subject. Friendship and loss. Talk about life imitating art. Carine was never very attached to dogs, but she loved Luisa “because she did not smell,” and was silent and graceful like a Degas ballerina. And I guess also, because she was mine.

Wonders of the World Globe-trotting jewelry designer Lepa Galeb-Roskopp knows no bounds when it comes to inspiration. Be it the Adriatic, the Sahara, or California, the Misahara creator finds beauty in all her surroundings. BY KRISTEN HEINZINGER
How do those places inspire your designs? In Africa, we live in Zimbali, and I find a lot of inspiration in a private homestead owned by the Getty where I watch the animals and I’m surrounded by nature, my most inspirational force. A lot of the collections are inspired by the African and Adriatic sunsets and the stars. I use star sapphires to represent those. Do you have formal design training? I have a doctorate from Stanford, but no formal design training. [Laughs] My designs tell a story— they have a soul. The jeweler I work with, Emile, is brilliant, and he’ll tell me if a design can or can’t work. Where are you most creative? In Africa, where I can remove myself from everything. What are some of the materials you use? I work with 18- and 20-karat pink gold, white gold, and yellow gold. I love diamonds, but some of my favorite exotic stones are tourmaline, African kunzite and tanzanite, and sapphires. Misahara is all about mixing exotic stones with the precious and the semiprecious. I work a lot with fancy [diamonds], too. I have to wear each piece before it’s released to make sure it doesn’t cause a headache or weigh on the ear. I’m very particular about that. Who is the Misahara customer? An independent woman who wants to create her own style. She’s powerful and she loves to aspire, too.
CALL OF THE WILD The Original Collection is inspired by GalebRoskopp’s time spent in South Africa with her family, where she visits a homestead.
What’s your background? My father is Serbian and my mother is American. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, and spent my summers in Europe, mostly around the European continent and Yugoslavia, where my aunt was a diplomat and my uncle was the head of a prominent political party in ex-Yugoslavia. I spent a large part of the summers in Paris, where I was exposed to fashion. In the Balkan culture, fashion is considered shallow; my father wanted me to go into mathematics. How did you come to launch a jewelry company? I’d have a goldsmith in Silicon Valley alter the jewelry my husband would buy me. Finally, the jeweler said it was costing too much, and I’d need to do it on my FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
own. So I went to New York and found a fantastic atelier to create and handcraft my designs. What does the name Misahara mean? It’s a combination of my children’s names—Mara, Sara, and Harrison. It's also for the Sahara, and the “Mi” is for Greg Minnaar, a pro athlete who's part of [my husband’s] international mountain biking team. What places have inspired your designs? My Balkan roots and the Adriatic, and Africa, where my family visits every year. How often do you travel? We live a nomadic life and have four places of residence—in Soho in New York, Silicon Valley, Zimbali resort in Durban in South Africa, and Porto Montenegro.
Where are your biggest customers, and what does it cost them to own a piece? It’s super international. At Porto Montenegro, it’s eclectic, because it’s a marina. In the U.S., it’s more of a Beverly Hills crowd, and in Palo Alto, we’re targeting millennials. On average, prices range from $5K to $15K, and go up to $300K. What’s in store this summer? I live in Porto Montenegro in the summer, where we have one of our flagships. It’s a mecca for super yachts, which is great for business. In July, I visited the Hamptons, and I head to Europe in August. In September, we start trunk shows at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills, and we also unveil our collection at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. It will officially be available in October. I’m doing a few hand and body adornments, like lariats, cuffs, and chokers, and fusing a few lines together, like Petal with Unity. What do you recommend for a summer wardrobe? I love lariats! You can wear them with a bathing suit, and it adds such an element of beauty. ß

Who enjoys a front-row seat to the East End’s most delicious drama? Professional chauffeurs, of course. The Daily Summer recently grilled a college student who’s earning his keep by picking up passengers, among other things. AS TOLD TO EDDIE ROCHE
How does one become a professional driver? I got the job from a friend who has been with [redacted] since it started. Last year, on one of the busy weekends, the boss was short of drivers, so he got in touch with me. We had a five-minute phone conversation, and that was it. It’s not a thorough screening process, by any means. No kidding! How familiar were you with the Hamptons before you started? I had never been. Also comforting! With all the apps now, like Waze, you don’t really need to have local knowledge to be a professional driver. I could do this job in Missouri and get around. What do you think of the area? I see the Hamptons as an extension of the city. It’s every cliché I imagined, and then some. There’s a real range, from down-to-earth to totally pretentious people—not to mention the stereotypical Wall Street douchebags. How do they treat you? For the most part, they respect us and what we’re doing. They know we’re students who are trying to make some money. But I’ve had a few passengers tell me to shut up and not ask any questions. How do you work? I drive my car to wherever your car is, and then I get behind the wheel of your car, drop you off wherever you need to be, and wait for you in your car. Then you return to me totally s**t-faced drunk, and I take you home. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
How do you pass the time? Sometimes I go and get food, but I mostly watch movies on my computer. This weekend, I’m going to watch The Shawshank Redemption. I’ve heard it’s a classic. It is! Tell us about some of your most memorable experiences. Obviously, people use my service because they want to get drunk without having to worry about driving. Sometimes the clients ask me to join them for the night if they’re going to a club. I’m not your averagelooking driver, and as long as I don’t drink, I don’t see any problem with taking people up on the offer. Why not? Some clients have gone in the club and brought girls out for me. That can be a little awkward because they are normally in a different headspace. Have you ever gone home with any of these girls? I haven’t, but my best friend who also drives has had some wild encounters. It’s usually with the older housewives who want to hook up with a younger guy. It’s never with anyone young. Have they had sex with these ladies? No, no, no. It’s normally just kissing, and another time, a three-way in the backseat. I’d probably do it if given the chance. We always joke about hooking up with the Hamptons mom. My friend had one mom who took a liking to him and kept calling him to drive her around. It was borderline stalky. He finally had to stop taking her calls because she was getting crazy. You’re 21. What’s your age limit? Probably no one over 60 years old, but it’s hard

Driving Miss Crazy
to tell how old a lot of these women are, because everyone’s had work done. What’s the appeal of hooking up with a Hamptons mom? It doesn’t really turn us on, but it’s a trophy thing. Bragging rights. Wouldn’t any guy my age find it hard to say no to some foxy lady trying to get in his pants? We’ll take your word for it. You must hear a lot of interesting things! The phone conversations are always the best. I hear people lie about where they’re going just about every weekend. People also lie about their drinking, or who they are with. What’s been your biggest tip? One time I was taken to a Yankee game, given three lap dances at a strip club, and then I got a $1,200 tip at the end of the night. It was probably one of the best days of my life. Do people drink a lot in the backseat? They do. It puts me in an uncomfortable position because if we were to get pulled over, I’m the driver, so I’d be responsible. Sometimes I say something and other times I let it go. What are other hazards of the job? You have to be careful that you aren’t doing any drug runs. People have been known to use this service to pick up and deliver drugs. We unwillingly become the middleman, so I’m always on alert for any “special errands” that I’m given. I also draw the line at food shopping. Another driver was given a shopping list while his client was at a daytime party. We aren’t personal assistants. What are some of your other memorable days on the job? I’ve had quite a few clients invite me into their homes. Not in any sexual way—I think they’re just lonely. People live in these big houses, and sometimes they just want companionship wherever they can find it. I always take people up on their offer. It’s worth losing a few bucks to play psychologist for a few minutes. I’ve had people dump their biggest secrets on me or ask for my advice. Maybe it’s because I’m driving their car that people trust me, or maybe people are just crazy. What do you like about your job? I like meeting new people every night. You never know who you’re going to wind up with. I also do a lot of networking. I’ve gotten e-mail addresses from people who have offered to help with internships. This is such an easy job. You literally just sit in the car and drive. ß

A FIRST LOVE, A FAMILY ART While Peter Thomas Roth clinical skin care, hair care and beauty have been my passion and my grandparents’ history, fine jewelry has been my best-kept secret. After all, I practically grew up in my parents’ jewelry workshop in Manhattan. Since 1939, my father, and later my mother, brought to life the designs of many of the renowned artists, celebrities and impresarios who would call on them. I learned by watching them firsthand, and throughout my life their inspiration and expertise have remained steadfast with me. In my youth, I spent many days on Fifth Avenue in the opulence of one of New York’s most prestigious museums. There, I volunteered in the Jewelry Reproduction Department, mastering the very art that my parents had practiced for decades. On Mondays when the museum was closed, I would wander the galleries like an explorer. It was there that the motif behind my Ribbon and Reed collection caught my eye for the very first time. Classic and elegant, it adorned a selection of the greatest masterpieces and objets d’arts as well as the details of some of the grandest rooms. For me it felt symbolic of luxury, power, romance and authority. Years later, I drew on its inspiration to create my timeless jewelry collection. Please enjoy wearing, collecting and cherishing my Ribbon and Reed collection — modern classics that convey timeless elegance.
