Carolina HERRERA

SCENE Oh

Daphne Groeneveld is 18!

Carolina! Backstage post-show you told us you were skipping out on the champagne and heading to the office to watch a re-cap runway video. No need to pick it apart, chérie, it was marvelous. Karlie Kloss opened the show, while a fur-draped Hilary Rhoda closed it. “It was a little hot backstage so I was trying not to sweat,” Hil told The Daily (while looking cool as a cucumber.) Might we add? Mrs. H., your front row embodied everything that’s dishy and dear to us about Fashion Week. Let the chatter begin...

Do you have your license? I’m starting driving lessons. Your English has improved! I’ve been watching reality shows, bad stuff like Jersey Shore. Snookie has finally contributed something positive to society. What do you do in NY for fun? I’m staying in Times Square. I just went with my daddy to see The Lion King. The saddest part was when the father died. It was too much.

anne slowey What do you typically do on Valentine’s Day? Go to bed at 9:00 p.m. What trends is your daughter Afton [2] into? Taking Chanel lipstick and drawing tiger stripes all over her body. She’s into makeup. We leave the house with a full Jackson Pollock face. She looks adorable. You haven’t brought her to any shows… She’s out of control. She wouldn’t sit still. She was a great show watcher before she could walk.

Anne Slowey

We know you’re a night owl. I usually go to bed around 3:30 a.m. and today I was up at 7:30 a.m. I feel horrible. Do you nap? I like to take a before-dinner nap. It helps me sleep to hear all the honking outside and to know that I’m on my sofa sleeping, while everyone else is trapped in a taxi.

You live near Lincoln Center? I can walk here on a nice day. Not today. I live on the upper, Upper West Side. Are you a typical Upper West Side mom? I live there, my children go to school there, you’ll have to draw your own conclusions. Let’s talk about Carolina Herrera… She’s very special as a human being. She really is. Her show is like her; elegant and poised.

Live next door to Anna in Mastic! Like, right next door. As in, share the same street number as the fashion world’s most famous editrix, whose palatial property abuts this one, and shares its post box. It’s been on the market for a few years (and we hear there’s a tree growing in the middle of the tennis court), but it’s on a 6.8-acre plot, and includes an “entertainment room.” Tennis, anyone? Michael Kors is paying it forward! His Fall ’13 show’s today, company sales are booming—now it’s time for the designer to take on world hunger with the U.N.’s World Food Programme. A T-shirt with the campaign’s “Watch Hunger Stop” slogan, plus two custom watches will benefit the charity. “This is our first global philanthropic initiative!” said Kors. Starting next month, the unisex watches, each of which will feed 100 hungry tots, will be sold online. Food for thought, non?

Love the collection! Congratulations on 10 years. You were in our anniversary issue, shirtless in 2003... That’s because I was in the best shape of my life. I wanted that documented. Where did those guns come from? I was in high school. I was swimming.

You worked out on the runway. When I was doing my reality show, I realized that I gotta move! I started working out with a trainer, but I realized that I like dancercise more than the treadmill. When the idea of aerobic wear came up, I thought, ‘That’s the theme of my show!’ Did you invite Richard Simmons?... We thought about it for a second, but then it left our mind. We love our Betsey! What’s your favorite aerobic move to do? The collapses in between the exercises. (Gets down on floor to start doing aerobics for us.) Five, Six, Seven, Eight…

A Moment with… Emmy Rossum and Viola Davis

The runways naturally always boast countless mega-lash looks both true and faux. You may not want to go as extreme as the Twig—or even the gals at Badgley Mischka—but with Maybelline New York’s The Rocket™ by Volum’Express® Mascara, all you’ll need is one sweep for instant volume. The secret’s in the brush’s rigid core of micro-bristles that help avoid unwanted clumps and ensure that each lash is coated from root to tip. This is a trend that anyone can easily sport front row.

of a Collab:

Maybelline New York + Mara Hoffman As Maybelline New York’s reign at the Tents continues with 11 hot to trot runway sponsorships, your Daily checked in with two-time Maybelline partner Mara Hoffman and lead makeup artist Charlotte Willer to find out what really goes into their creative collab. photography by giorgio niro What sparked your Maybelline relationship? MH: This was actually our second round together. We teamed up for Spring 2013, which was a great partnership. We decided to work together again this season. Charlotte, what draws you to Mara? CW: She’s so full of life and color. She likes to have a fun look on the girls, which is more than most New York designers who typically like the girls to be just fresh and natural. So, what was the next step? MH: I worked with my stylist, Richard Ruiz, to come up with a beauty concept around the collection before we met with the Maybelline team. My inspiration for Fall ’13 was “Misfits and Mystics.” It was FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

based on a world circus caravan, so I wanted the emphasis on an exaggerated upper eye to complement the bright prints. I e-mailed the Maybelline team the inspiration and several reference pictures, so they got a pretty good idea of where we were going before we met in person. So, who really calls the shots? CW: It’s really a team effort. Depending on the designer, sometimes I go into test runs fully prepared, other times I won’t know the inspiration until I get there, and I’ll experiment on the spot. I love that Mara’s always open to suggestions. For example, for her Hawaiian-themed Spring ’13 collection, she initially wanted a sexy girl with pale pink eyes… MH: Then it turned into pale turquoise-green eyes thanks to Charlotte!

When do you schedule the first run-through? MH: Typically, the run-through is a quick process close to the show date. It’s done with a model from our lineup, and can last anywhere from one to four hours with hair and makeup combined. This season, we scheduled it for Thursday and our show was on Saturday, so it’s a tight timeframe, but we’re used to it. It’s not like we’re doing anything super complex, like painted animal faces. CW: After the meeting, we draw up a face chart to outline the look of the show. We send it to the designer for approval before sending it to our makeup team. The day of the show, we have a final run-through. I put makeup on the first girl while my team watches. The designer, in this case, Mara, approves it and it’s show time! Mara, what’s your relationship with makeup? MH: Personally, I go for a bare look. If I’m too made up, I feel disconnected with myself, so I wear a tinted moisturizer with SPF 15, mascara, and sometimes a clear lip gloss. I’m a bit of a tomboy at heart. But I’m addicted to my mascara! Do you remember your first makeup experience? MH: It wasn’t very successful! In 5th or 6th grade, I put makeup on for the

first time and went to school. Two snobby girls asked me who taught me how to do my makeup. I naïvely was like, ‘Oh, my mom!’ Now, as an adult I know they were really making fun of me. Charlotte, what’s the most used beauty product during Fashion Week? CW: Last season it was the Dream Fresh BB Cream because everyone wanted dewy skin. Any suggestions to vamp up the front row? CW: A bright lip always looks fresh on camera. Maybelline has a great shade: Color Sensational in Revival Red. It’s a pretty, bluish-red lipstick that makes your teeth look very white. If Maybelline and Mara Hoffman collaborated on a capsule collection, what would it look like? CW: I’m seeing Mara’s pocket book collection with bright colors; red lips and hot pinks. MH: An eye palette with one of my blown-out prints on it would be cool!

Make It RAIN

American trench coat and umbrella company London Fog will debut interpretations of their iconic rain repellers from Badgley Mischka, Chris Benz and Cynthia Rowley come August. We checked in with Iconix Group’s CMO Dari Marder and crew to see what’s brewing.

Dari Marder How did this collaboration happen? We were looking to infuse the brand with some interesting creative platform and thought about working with designers in other places. We started to put together a wish list of designers with the questions: ‘How would their vision translate to our kids coats? How would it look on our classic umbrellas and our luggage collection?’ So, we were looking for a reinvention. How did you choose the designers? Well, we’re very fond of Badgley Mischka! So that was a natural. We thought it would be fun to take that glamorous aesthetic and see how it would translate to these everyday items. We love the collaborations that Cynthia Rowley always does, and we knew she’d be a good partner. Chris Benz was such a breath of fresh air to us. We were really looking for a way to partner with him on a brand in our portfolio.

Badgley Mischka How did the collab come about for you guys? We’re part of the same parent company. You know we’re all about glamour, so it’s fun to try and add a little dash of what we do to a product that’s sensible. What will the raincoat look like? It’s a classic silhouette. It’s a true trench coat, but it has beaded details like a storm flap and cuff straps. The biggest challenge was making the beads waterproof. How about the children’s raincoat? We did a little poncho. A little girl can just throw it on and put her arms through the holes. You know parents hate to fuss and get coats on their fidgety children!

Chris Benz

Congrats on the new collaboration! Thank you! We love The Daily at Chris Benz, so happy anniversary! Thanks! Tell us about your thought process for your design. I wanted to do something oversized, with a retro vibe like a ‘50s topcoat that’s ready for the rain. Rainwear is so specific that I think adding a little excitement with proportion is really fun. The men’s trench also has floral design! Discuss. I’m still trying to win the battle of putting the flower on the outside versus putting it on the inside! I love floral for menswear. It’s so vintage-y and Palm Beach. Will you wear it? Of course! I need it this week. It’s horrible out there! What’s the most fun part of doing a collab? The thing that I love is reinterpreting classic designs. London Fog is an exciting company to be working with because the product is so specific. Putting our design stamp on that feels really symbiotic. Is it more fun to work with a classic brand since you have such a cool, quirky style? Yes, absolutely! We love American sportswear and we love classic in any capacity, so anytime we can apply our distinct point of view on a classic product is really exciting. Have you ever worn a trench in London in the fog? I definitely own a few trench coats! You need a variety of weights. Growing up in Seattle, the thing you learn is that you can’t be overly dressed for rainy weather because you get so hot, and I do believe that I have worn a trench coat in London in the fog!
