SPECIAL PROMOTION
THE
INTERNATIONAL
EDIT
Bringing a touch of European flare to Coterie, the founder of Agent R.E.D. International, Genie Parada-Fishman is introducing her farflung and also locally MADE in the USA labels to the floor of the Javits. Care to take a sartorial trip to Spain? Or opt for a wardrobe-focused trek stateside? Coming right up! GENIE PARADA-FISHMAN, FOUNDER, AGENT R.E.D. INTERNATIONAL How many booths will you have this time around? We will have five booths of varying sizes this year, mostly merchandised together in the Agent R.E.D. International aisle. What does the name Agent R.E.D. International mean? R.E.D. stands for Runway European Designs, because our showroom was initially focused on introducing European designers to America. We have evolved to include a more expansive global offering, although we’re true to our roots in introducing the American market to interesting and innovative international designers. What’s new for your showroom? I’m excited about our social media intensification program for this coming season. We’ve always posted news about our brands and events, but this season we’re including features on our retailer partners. We will also feature interviews with our designers where they will take us through the creative process and provide an insider’s perspective into their world. What are you looking forward to for Coterie this season? I am looking forward to seeing our clients and sharing with them the incredible product. I’m excited to give our retailers access to some of the best product on the market in each category and ultimately to help them be profitable in a tough economic moment. What TV are you addicted to these days? If I catch myself in a TV moment, it’s something fun and mindless like Fashion Police or anything on the E! Network. Otherwise I’m a busy body and I’m always working on some type of project. Who’s your favorite fashion celeb? I adore Jennifer Lopez’ style; she exudes strength, passion, and confidence. I love that she’s constantly taking risks in fashion and is always standing out in every crowd. There’s nothing I deplore more than a boring and safe look that doesn’t reflect personal style at all.
DID YOU KNOW?
Desigual
Velvet Heart
DITTOS Designed in New York City and owned by denim legend Jordache, this brand has a massive celeb following including starlets Jessica Alba, Katharine McPhee, Kendall Jenner and Emma Roberts—to name a few. DESIGUAL Founder Thomas Meyer, envisioned the company when he was only 20 years old. In 1984 Desigual launched in Barcelona, Spain and today the brand can be found in over 72 countries and is set to hit $1.4 billion globally in 2014. Plus, in 2011 Christian Lacroix collaborated to launch Desigual by L. Supermodel, Candice Swanepoel (at left) wore one of his golden designs on this season’s runway during Fashion Week. SPANX Founder Sara Blakely was previously a fax-machine saleswoman! When a pair of pants that didn’t fit right, she decided to cut the feet out of her pantyhose and put them on under her pants to make them lie smoothly. And that is how SPANX—now a billion dollar enterprise—was born making Blakely what Forbes recently coined the “Youngest Self-Made Billionaire”. VELVET HEART Los Angeles based, Velvet Heart, a contemporary women’s line focuses on a casual lifestyle, prides itself on constructing pieces from fine spun cotton, soft-as-silk rayon, supple Tencel, chiffons, and charmeuse—all fabrics are easy care, easy wear too! CAPOTE Fellow Los Angeles based brand Capote is well known for their signature irresistibly soft and cozy knit fabrics. But it’s their best-selling bamboo stretch fleece that’s a reorder hit every season; featuring a proprietary blend fabric that is luxuriously soft to the touch.

Did the label’s 25th birthday influence your designs for Fall? We went to the archives to focus on what we do best: affordable luxury and timeless elegance. You’re from L.A. What do you think of NYC’s wintry weather? It’s exhausting. I don’t know how you guys do it. I truly bow down to New Yorkers!

How’d you get involved with DWP? I met CEO Michael Glasser six or seven years ago to discuss working on L.A.M.B. denim, but the timing wasn’t right. I bring my design aesthetic, edge, and attitude. What’s the DWP fit like? It’s sexy, effortlessly polished, and casual, with drawstrings and pleats to make it comfortable, without being oversized.

HAUTE HIPPIE Trish Wescoat Pound, Founder Booth: 1704, Level 3 What’s new for Haute Hippie? Accessories are next on our radar. Vintage and beaded neckpieces, bracelets, and belts have always been part of the collections; an accessory line would only enhance the Haute Hippie women’s wardrobe. What’s happening for Fall? Haute Hippie Fall 2014 was inspired by NYC’s Central Park Casino; an era of decadence, elegance, and glamour. The flapper girl of the '20s comes alive in the present, with menswear inspired tailcoats, blouses, and layers of oversized mélange sweaters on intricately embellished gowns. Floral and plaid prints mix with hard and soft textures of leather and chiffon. How does Haute Hippie fit into the retail landscape? Our goal is the democratization of luxury. Our adjacencies on retailers’ floors include Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang, Rag & Bone, and Rebecca Taylor, but these are not our competition—they’re just our 'neighbors!' What’s your Coterie experience like? It's an opportunity to see many of our specialty store accounts! This gives us a chance to design into an aesthetic that’s about style for the customers, not trends. What’s the scoop on your fancier frocks? We do outrageous gowns. We do hand beading, not machine beading, and we draw all of our own prints. No one is doing what we’re doing! I don’t really get to go anywhere in our gowns except maybe to the door to greet the Chinese food deliveryman!
Daniel Forest, Sales Director and Jenny Roberts, Director of PR Booth: 1846, Level: 3 What’s new? We've created a fur home collection that has really caught the attention of interior designers and celebrities from Tribeca to Aspen! What kind of pieces? You name it, we’ll try it! Rugs, pillows, headboards, bench covers, blankets, and more. What's the most insane custom fur request you've received? We once made a chinchilla headboard for a king size bed! Imagine falling asleep next to that! Which designers used your furs on their runway this season? We've worked with Michael Kors for well over a decade. We also made some furs for Ralph Rucci, which were truly works of art. We are delighted to add Monique Lhuillier and Libertine to our stable of designers!
SHI CASHMERE Shahriar Shahandeh, President and Chief Creative Officer, Booth: 422, Level: 4 Where were you before joining Shi? My specialty is reinvigorating brands. A decade honing these skills at Chanel has left me in good shape. I'm thrilled to be redefining Shi, the brand that was responsible for changing the look of Scottish cashmere in the '80s. Tell us a fun fact about Shi, please! After Shi’s first collection, every Scottish mill created an in house fashion department. What can we expect from your Fall collection? The collection, which presents contemporary silhouettes, was inspired by the Shi designs that were archived in the avant-garde fashion gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. If you were to throw a cashmere party, who would attend? The Duchess of Cambridge, Marigay McKee, Lucy Yeomans, and Natalie Massenet. Where can Shi be purchased these days? Saks, AlOthman, specialty boutiques all over the U.S. and our own boutiques in London and NY.

Where in the world would you like to present your collection? The Jardin du Luxembourg.
CYNTHIA STEFFE Design Team Booth: 1522, Level 3 Where do you grab lunch when spending a day at the trade shows? Those amazing carts that make their way down our aisle are always a saving grace! But Seamless has definitely brought our food game to a new level. What are your beauty obsessions this season? We love Karlie Kloss' short and choppy ‘do and for makeup, we love the timelessness of a red lip. If you could present your collection anywhere in the world, where would it be? La belle ville de Paris, bien sûr! When it comes to accessories, what are your signatures? We always die for original and vintage finds, but we also relish the simplicity of a few gold or silver pieces. Where can we find you when you’re not designing? Curled up in a comforter, catching up on episodes of our favorite shows.
AMY MATTO
Amy Matto, Founder & Designer Booth: 2942, Level 3 What hues can we look forward for the Fall? Wine tones are a huge trend this season. We paired them with gorgeous neutrals. I love creating fun, feminine, vintage-inspired clothing that’s both timeless and timely. What's your signature? Ruffles, interesting necklines, and, ruffles; I can’t get enough of them! Where does your elephant print come from? I sketched out the earliest version of the print when I saw a mom and baby elephant walking trunk to tail on my honeymoon. What's your go-to stationary? I use a gorgeous set of stationary from The Printery in Oyster Bay. It has a custom logo my husband and I designed for our wedding. Who's your muse for Fall? Claire McCardell, the very first American sportswear designer. She paved the way for American designers to be relevant in the world of fashion. When shopping in NYC, where’s your first stop? I head straight to Bloomingdale's for their Shop in Shops.

YARNZ Larry Wolfe, Designer Booth: 3921, Level 3 If you could present your collection anywhere in the world, where would it be? Paris is my dream. A full presentation is in the near future! How do you choose the names for your designs? For sales purposes, we try to be as literal as possible. If it has mushrooms on it, it's the mushroom scarf. Where can we find you, when you’re not designing? At home with my man or shopping at Nepenthes. It’s the only place I go shopping in NYC. What are you looking forward to at Coterie this year? I love the TMRW section. It’s always good to see new faces, young designs, and young perspective. Do you prefer Twitter or Instagram? Instagram, because I’m a visual person.
525 AMERICA Marianne Bock, Design Director Booth: 7412, Level 3 What’s in store for this year? 525 America is celebrating our 30th birthday! We plan to revive our lauded men’s collection, grow our popular home-wear division, and introduce Heritage 1984. How will you be celebrating the big birthday? There will be a party, of course, and we have an extensive social-media campaign planned. We’re also working on a national advertising campaign that's a throwback to our first foray into the ad world in the ’90s. What was the inspiration for your collection this Fall? For Fall 2014, ski chic was the theme. I was inspired by the yarns for the season, which are long-haired or have unique texture, and lend themselves to this season’s modern perspective on classic sporty attire. What's your favorite social media site? For personal use I love Pinterest. It's visual, yet less voyeuristic than Instagram and has become a resource for design inspiration. JOCELYN Jocelyn Gordon, Founder and Designer Booth: 1940, Level: 3 Tell us about your Fall collection! My fall collection is rooted in effortless luxury, with a focus on beautiful texture and graphic patterns. What was the inspiration? I was inspired by the NYC street style girl who can go from Downtown to Uptown, all while feeling confident in her style. Who is your muse this season? Tommy Ton’s street style girl! What’s your go-to thank you gift? My Jocelyn fingerless fur Mandy Mitten of course! What TV shows are you addicted to these days? Ray Donovan and Girls. Who is your favorite fashion celeb? Carine Roitfeld is so cool and très chic. Ideal dinner party attendees? Polar opposite people, like Jay-Z and Barbra Streisand. Favorite thing to do in NYC during February? Lay in bed on my fur throw and watch the snow fall. Favorite Instagram accounts? My favorite bloggers, like Danielle from We Wore What.
RE AUTUMN CASHME Katherine Carpenter, Women’s Design Director Booth: 5222, Level 3 How often can we find you wearing cashmere? Aside from my frequent trips to the beach, I’m usually in cashmere. With all the weights that we do, there's always an option. What was your Fall inspiration? We pay homage to the ’90s, with a throwback to the Kurt and Courtney days. Can you share any facts about cashmere that we might not know about? The best cashmere comes from the soft underbelly of the cashmere goat that lives in inner Mongolia. When you’re not at work, where can we usually find you? Shopping for vintage home goods, traveling, or at home in front of a great movie. Which celebs have been spotted wearing your sweaters recently? Olivia Wilde, Naomi Watts, and Emma Watson. It’s a very surreal, flattering, and humbling experience to have these incredible women wear our clothes.

GORSKI Leonard Gorski, President Booth: 9906, Level 1 What was your first collection like? Fabulous and aspirational! It was elegant, luxurious and sophisticated with a focus on great fit. Let’s talk fur! What’s new this season in that category? We treat fur as fabric. We color, shear, add texture, knit, and combine it with cashmere and precious wools to create ultra-light styles. What accessories pair well with fur? Fabulous jewels, long Napa leather gloves, a great Italian leather belt, leather boots, a jeweled clutch, and a fabulous designer handbag.
FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
Which historical figures have worn fur well? The Russian Tsars, as well as members of the British, Thai, and Jordanian royal families. When it comes to staying warm, what are your tips? Wear natural fabrics, such as furs, cashmere, or fine wool. Natural fabrics breathe while providing the highest insolent qualities. Of course fur is the fabric of choice among all natural fabrics. How colorful is too colorful for fur? Color is important in our collections! We insist on a perfect palette to enhance the evening and ready-to-wear collections that our customers will buy for fall.

WHO’S Showing PICKETT Jennifer Pickett, Creative Director and William Taswell III, Design Director Booth: 5041, Level: 3 Tell us about your brand! Jennifer Pickett: It’s our first season so I’m really trying to create an identity for the Pickett brand that's based on the core principles of who I am. What was the inspiration for starting the collection? Jennifer: My maternal grandmother was a self-taught seamstress; throughout my childhood years she made all of my dresses and allowed me to participate in the process. Even to this day, I have the dresses that my grandmother made for me, with the special labels that read, 'Made With Love, Grandma.' And the inspiration for this season? William Taswell III: Jennifer inspired the Fall 2014 season. When the two of us met, we were abnormally in sync. We share the same idea of how women should look and feel. She made me believe that there are women out there who still want to be ladylike and feminine, in the midst of all the minimalism happening in the market today.
LUCY NAGLE Lucy Nagle Lucy Nagle, Owner and Director Booth: 9525, Level 1 What does your inspiration board look like this season? It has a soft color palette of charcoal, grey, and olive, with accents of pale blush. The feel is relaxed luxury and stylish wearability. What’s new for Fall? I've introduced quite a few oversized styles inspired by Cara Delevingne. She prefers oversized boyfriend sweatshirts and hoodies, but I've updated them with 100 percent cashmere. If you were going out to dinner decked out in Lucy Nagle, where would you go? Scott's restaurant in Mayfair, London for dinner and then next door to the Connaught hotel for cocktails afterwards. They have the best cocktails in the world! What’s your design process like? I'm constantly taking photos of anything that catches my eye, tearing out images that interest me from magazines and picking up unique objects on my travels. Then I bring it all together to start designing a new collection.
FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
KI GORSKI APRÈS-S Lauren Gorski, President Booth: 9908, Level: 1 What was the inspiration this season? The collection was inspired by the beautiful Florence, Italy. The shapes are trim and sexy, but the fit is optimal for the modern American woman. What scents go well with your collection? Mountain air and fresh cut fields of green. What was your first collection like? The Gorski collections from the onset were a departure from the boxy, heavy, and utilitarian look. Our collections were designed to be pretty, elegant, and lightweight. But they're still as warm and wearable slope-side as they are for the nighttime. What furs can we look forward to for Fall? We're expanding our vest collection with new shapes in very fitted styles. You’ll see belts, buckles, and luxurious rare and dyed fox trim. How colorful is too colorful when it comes to fur? Half of our collection is in fabulous colors! Even our neutral earth tones and blacks are stunning as we always add contrast and gold details. Favorite locale to rock a drop-dead gorgeous fur? I feel just as fabulous on the train to work, as I do entering my office, going to the movies, or hanging out slope-side. Plus, while I'm out shopping, I do not want to be matching all the other bulky coats out there.

CHIC Couturier David Meister (Booth: 10707, Level 1) is on speed dial for plenty of stars, including Sharon Stone, Sofia Vergara, and Tina Fey. While his designs might be regulars on the tapis rouge, this L.A.-based designer himself was born to be in the spotlight. BY JULIE ZIGOS What was your first gig in the industry? When I graduated from the University of Cincinnati School of Design, Architecture, and Art, I packed up my bags and moved to New York. My first job was Danskin, back when Danskin was hot. What are the perks of being an L.A.-based designer? Fashion has become so red carpet oriented; it’s great that I’m here and accessible because certain actresses love it if you can slip over for a last-minute fitting. And we’ve seen you on TV before, non? I have a collection for HSN, which is so fun. The first time I was at HSN, I was on air three times in two days. The first airing finished at 1 a.m., but I had to be in a meeting with my producer at 4 a.m., to be back on the air at 6 a.m. It was like being back in college, pulling an all-nighter. Except you’re on TV and you have to be energetic. You’re also a regular on talk shows? I’ve been on TV discussing fashion or award shows in general. Other times I’m doing segments that are specific to my collection. But we also dress a lot of the talk show hosts; we work a lot with Lara Spencer, who loves to talk about her David Meister dresses. Favorite part about being on TV? On television, there’s no going back and changing or fixing something; I love the immediacy of it. How do you prep for a show appearance? I don’t! I just show up, and do it. Everything that happens on TV is spontaneous, which I think keeps it interesting, as does the chemistry of who you’re working with. In February alone, Mindy Kaling, Katie Couric, and Diane Lane have all been spotted in your dresses. Do you have a penchant for dressing strong women? I’ve never thought of it, but now that you say it, I think it’s true! Confident and strong women just want to wear things that look great. The sign of a good dress is that you notice how great the woman looks. You don’t notice that she’s wearing a great dress, but that she looks amazing overall. Who’s driving the L.A. fashion moment? People used to look at fashion publications for what to wear. Now, people look to celebs in the weeklies because that’s really who they want to look like. Whether it’s hair, makeup, shoes, or gowns, it all starts on the red carpet and L.A. owns that. When you create a dress that’s worn

on the carpet, is it always made-to-order? Sometimes the celebs will see a dress and want it as is. Other times, the celebrity and stylist will see a dress and ask for another color, but for the awards show they’ll usually ask me to create them a custom gown. Will you always know when a celeb wears one of your gowns? I always say, you never know if a celeb is going to wear your dress until you see that leg getting out of the limo. Celebrities usually don’t confirm until the day before and sometimes they get out of the car and they’re not wearing your dress. Any examples? When we dressed Tina Fey for the Emmys several years ago, she called in one of my gowns. We didn’t hear anything so we figured she wasn’t wearing it. I was at the Emmys that night, and when she came onstage I realized ‘That’s my dress!’ Do you have any fave red carpet looks? I love the fuchsia dress I did for Felicity Huffman. And I love Sharon Stone, so anything I’ve done for her. No one knows how to work a red carpet like her. Have you ever been star struck? Only once, when I met Angelina Jolie. I think I drooled on myself. And you’ve been doing this whole thing for 15 years! Here I am, still standing! And 15 years in fashion years is kind of like dog years, my brand is probably like 135 years old! When’s your busy season? Every day! In fashion there’s no downtime, but the slowest month is December. If you ship every month, how many seasons do you offer? We do Pre-Fall, Fall, Holiday, Resort, Spring, and Summer. There are six seasons, but some seasons have two or three deliveries. It’s a lot! With all that going on, where can we find you on your day off? I have the most perfect child in the world, my Havanese! His name is Petey SiegelMeister. He’s eaten cashmere, and ruined some Gucci and Prada shoes. He’s got expensive taste! He never goes for the cheap, but it doesn’t matter. When you’re that cute, you can dine on whatever you want! G E T T Y I M AG E S ( 2) ; P O R T R A I T: C O U R T E S Y
