The early settlers of Utah began to spread throughout the area after their arrival in 1847. The first pioneers came to Pleasant Grove on Sept. 13, 1850. At that time, Pleasant Grove encompassed all the area from American Fork Canyon to Provo. As the population grew, some began to spread south along the trail. This area was then called “Stringtown.” This began in about 1861.

Certain events occurred that encouraged the growth. The transcontinental railroad connected at Promontory Point on May 10, 1869, which led to further railroad connection south into Utah County. This growth made mail delivery more necessary. Mail was delivered to Lindon at a point along State Street near a large linden tree (on the west side of the street).

The first post office was then opened in the Cullimore Store just across the road on Sept. 25, 1889. This area became a very important place in Lindon, not only for mail delivery but also in the name of the city and area when the city was granted incorporation in 1924. Evidently, the area described as near the “linden tree” was misspelled and Lindon was accepted as the area’s incorporated name.

It also became an important place for travel. As the all-electric railway came from Salt Lake through all the cities in Utah County to Payson, one stop was near the tree. This privately funded transportation was way ahead of its time.

It ran right through the center of each city and was very comfortable and very inexpensive (1.5 pennies per mile). By 1912, it ran to Provo and on to Payson by 1916.

Many came to the Lindon stop, left the train and were transported by local horses and buggies or wagons to the Geneva Resort, a popular resort area on the east shore of Utah Lake. The resort offered good food, music, dancing, a beach, fun people and even opportunities to hand-feed a black bear that wandered through the crowd. There was also a 50-foot-high water slide.

Lindon continues to grow. It’s home to good people and fun places to be and offers great views of the mountains and valley. Those early settlers laid a great foundation for us. May we remember them, their hard work and their goodness. As we learn about and remember them, may we strive to be like them in our little bit of country.
