Ready to get back to enjoying the summer W

hen I think about the potential of the summer of 2021 I get excited. After seeing the coronavirus pandemic hinder our enjoyment during most of 2020, it is finally time to get back to doing things that all of us enjoy — traveling, hanging out at the lake with friends and family, visiting local establishments and having a great summer. One of the few things that I found more of an appreciation for is the state parks in our community. In this year’s Resorter, we feature Maplewood State Park (Page 12) near Pelican Rapids. The campground provides a great place to spend with family, while the trails give hikers something fun to do before heading back to the campfire for s’mores and hot dogs. Anglers and those that enjoy

canoeing and kayaking will also have a great time in the park. For those who are looking to be competitive outdoors, there are a plethora of golf courses in the area to test your skills. Whether it is having a great time with friends or acting like Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods, golf courses like Pebble Lake, Lida Greens, Tipsinah and others offer plenty of different challenges and fun for those ready to tee up for a good time.

As you venture through Otter Tail County, don’t forget to stop in the town of Battle Lake. The town lights up during the summer months as its several downtown businesses provide a variety of food and shopping options for community members and tourists alike. Not only are there numerous locally owned businesses there, the town is nestled between multiple lakes and Glendalough State Park. Those visiting would be doing themselves a disservice if they didn’t spend at least a day in Battle Lake. If you are looking for something to do on a Friday evening and you want high-octane entertainment, one of the best places to be is at I-94 Sure Step Speedway. The dirt track is home to the WISSOTA 100 race in September and showcases some of the top racers in and

around the area. To be honest, when I talk with people about glamping, most don’t know what I mean. But the current trend of glamping has taken those looking to have fun outdoors by storm. Glamping, or glamor camping, allows tourists and community members to enjoy the sights, sounds and experience of outdoors, while also having the comforts of staying at home. Rose Lake Glamping in Vergas is one of the places inside the county that offers the opportunity to experience the comfort of home outdoors. While traveling through the county and the surrounding areas, you might see a big prairie chicken, a giant otter or a detached big foot. These are just a few sculptures and landmarks that don the

landscape of west-central Minnesota. Check page XX for many of the spectacular landmarks around the area. Looking for something to do with the kids? Why not head to Wahpeton, North Dakota, to Chahinkapa Zoo? The zoo boasts a variety of animals from orangutans, white rhinos, zebras and more. There are also a variety of events and specials the zoo has to offer for those looking to visit friends of the animal kingdom. So, go out and have a great summer. Enjoy the resorts, businesses and events that Otter Tail County and the surrounding area has to offer. Zach Stich is the managing editor of Resorter and Fergus Falls Daily Journal.

Whistle Stop Bed & Breakfast provides unique lodging experience By Heather Kantrud The Daily Journal

I

n the small Minnesota town of New York Mills, built around the railroad tracks, sits Whistle Stop Bed & Breakfast, a unique lodging experience imagined and brought to life by owner Jann Lee and her late husband, Roger. With a dream to start a bed and breakfast, Jann saw the house that started it all and said “This would be perfect.” To which the previous owner told the Lees that it was for sale. The Lees moved to New York Mills, Roger’s hometown, in 1992 after acquiring the 1903 Victorian home and began renovating. Initial plans for the house took a sharp turn when they recognized an opportunity and found their niche — railroad cars. Located next to the train tracks and with plenty of space, the Lees purchased an 1893 caboose and began renovating. Available during the warmer months, the “Cozy Caboose” boasts a whirlpool bathtub, and a HEATHER KANTRUD | RESORTER queen-size murphy bed. Prior to being renovated for LIVING IN LUXURY: The Palace Car was the Whistle Stop Bed and Breakfast’s first train car renovation. Coincidentally, it was also the most the Whistle Stop, the caboose was used as an office for a time- and labor-intensive of the three train cars and caboose available for private lodging. In addition to the Palace Car and Cozy Caboose are public storage space on Pelican Lake following its retire- the Viking Car and Imperial Car. All cars are uniquely decorated and arranged, reminiscent of the time period during which the cars operated.

ment from the Soo Line Railroad. The “Palace Car,” a 1906 dining car retired from the Northern Pacific Railroad in the 1960s, was the most time-, labor- and dollar-intensive restoration for the Lees. “That one has our blood sweat and tears,” shared Jann. A full year of work restored the car to glory and it currently boasts a double whirlpool bathtub and queensize bed. The mahogany paneling and floral carpeting give it rich, authentic feel. The 1903 “Imperial Car,” a former day coach on the North Coast Limited traveling between Minnesota and Washington, has the same amenities as the Palace Car, but includes impressive stained-glass windows and a different layout. The car was previously used as a hunting shack, primary residence for a family of four, and a storage shed before becoming the “star” of the Whistle Stop Bed & Breakfast. The final car to join the collection is the “Viking Car,” previously known as Deerwood’s Trolley Diner. It’s amenities, which build off of those in the other cars, include a shower, wet bar, sauna and cable television. All cars feature a fireplace, air conditioning, a television (cable access only available in the Viking Car), refrigerator, microwave, free WiFi, and the option to have breakfast delivered to the car each morning. Other lodging options are also available. “It was my dream,” shared Jann, reflecting on her time developing and operating the bed and breakfast. “I never had a Plan B.” Jann’s ideas for continued development and improvement of the bed and breakfast never ends. In the past, Jann hosted tea parties, which were some of her favorite events. She is still open to hosting day events that would only require a dessert bar, such as bridal/baby showers and birthday parties. Whistle Stop has also been the site for two weddings. Open since 1993, the Whistle Stop Inn Bed & Breakfast provides an uncommon and delightful experience. More information can be located at their website: whistlestopbedandbreakfast.com/.

FAMILY FUN IS CALLING YOU

Chahinkapa Zoo a must-see attraction By James Allen Resorter

I

f you’re looking for an excellent family-oriented destination to kick spring into gear, look no further than the Chahinkapa Zoo in Wahpeton, North Dakota. Just a short drive of only about 35 miles due west of Fergus Falls, Chahinkapa Zoo has lots of new surprises and animals galore this year. The zoo officially opened for the season recently and zoo director Kathy Diekman says they had fantastic attendance saying it's never been a better time to visit. “We are looking forward to building a new tiger building this season, where the cheetahs are now. Also we are expanding the ‘Plight of Africa’ exhibit, so you’ll be seeing us bringing back aoudads, which are native to North Africa. They are involved in the species survival plan.” The zoo will be getting three of the aoudads, also referred to as barbary sheep from the San Diego Wildlife Park soon. They previously had these animals a few years ago, but are excited to bring them back to Chahinkapa. Diekman says they still have the southern white rhinos, along with zebras, and Tal, the orangutan, part of the largest of

the arboreal mammals. She says they also have some new otters. “They’re one-year-old sisters and they are very playful, and I encourage people to come and meet them,” she added. Diekman says they have a bigger troop of ringtail lemurs now, with a total of five. Also, the ever-popular bison exhibit will be exciting for visitors to see at the zoo as well. Planning ahead will enhance a visit to the zoo, as there are “behind the scenes” tours available to reserve from the Chahinkapa Zoo website. Diekman says a really good “behind the scenes” tour features the kangaroo exhibit. “We have a big kangaroo troop, and we’ll continue with our “walkabouts,” which are one of the optional ‘behind the scenes’ tours we offer, which offer visitors the chance to feed the kangaroos,” Diekman said. Diekman added visitors can still do the “behind the scenes” tour with the “African Encounter” exhibit. They will get to meet the rhinos, zebras, cheetahs and honey badgers. She says visitors can even customize a “behind the scenes” tour for a specific animal or exhibit, if a visitor is bringing someone special or they just want to focus on a certain kind of animal. Diekman added that this would need to be scheduled ahead of time on the website or call ahead. Chahinkapa Zoo also offers around 200 different classes every year from preschool age to adults, and they also host events called “Campfire Talks'' which visitors can attend. and register for online at chahinkapazoo. org. Diekman gave a brief outlook on the upcoming season. “It’s just going to be a great spring and summer, we still have some spring work to do because it's been so wet, but it’s looking pretty fabulous,” she said. The Chahinkapa Zoo in Wahpeton spans 29-acres and was opened in 1933.

GOLF A POPULAR WAY TO BEAT THE SUMMER BLUES

By Brian Hansel Resorter

W

hen going on vacation or relaxing in the lakes area, several people want to get out and see the sights. Where can we shop? Where can we eat? What are some fun activities that we can do? But there is also a group of people that find competitiveness or mild recreation as a way of relaxing. For those people, a trip to the nearest 9-, 14- or 18-hole golf course may be just the remedy. With COVID-19 restrictions loosening, getting back with friends and hitting the links may be just the ticket for great summer fun. Here a few courses that you can take a swing at this summer.

Pebble Lake

Looking for a quick fix for your golfing blues during the summer? Why don’t you try the 18-hole course of Pebble Lake Golf Club? After battling COVID-19 restrictions during 2020, the course is looking to get back to its usual tee times and seeing a bunch of members, tourists and locals swinging, putting and enjoying time outside on the fairways. Last season, director of golf Kevin Swenson said many community members took advantage of the outside sport due to the “perfect spring weather” and limited options coronavirus mandates placed on travel and other activities. The 18-hole championship course features 6,780 yards of golf from the tees for a par 72. The course rating is 72.8 and it has a slope rating of 134 on bluegrass fairways and bentgrass greens. Pebble Lake Golf Course offers five tee-box combinations for players of all skill levels with a full-service practice facility. Designed by Paul N. Coates, Pebble Lake Golf Course opened its 18 holes in 1941. Pebble Lake has 32 carts for rent. They are all equipped with GPS and Bluetooth. To set up a tee time, call 218-736-7404 or visit playpebblelake.com.

Balmoral

Anyone landing in the exact middle of Otter Tail County would find themselves in the neighborhood of Balmoral. The 59-year-old, family-owned course is directly across the road from the largest lake

in the county — Otter Tail — and right in the heart of vacation country. New tee boxes were added the prior season for women and senior players. Balmoral’s mature oaks are the defining characteristic of the 6,100, par-72 course.

Lida Greens

Joe and Dave Hilber are second and third-generation owners of the 14-hole course on the southwest shore of Lake Lida. The Hilbers’ parents opened the course in 1984. When Joe retired from business 10 years later, they asked him to join them. A few years ago his son, Dave, an eye doctor in Fergus Falls, took over the groundskeeping duties from his father, who concentrates now on bookkeeping. The first nine holes of the course are a par 30. Anyone playing all 14 holes can make par with a round of 48. The last five holes on the course are definitely most challenging.

CLUBBING AROUND: Whether you hit the links looking for fun or a competitive challenge, the golf courses in Otter Tail County and the surrounding area got you covered.

“The younger folks like the back five,” Joe Hilber said.

Tipsinah Mounds

There is a mode of travel at Tipsinah Mounds — Finn Cycles. A golfer can sit on a golf cart while his partner drives but Finn Cycles are a different animal. They seat one and look very much like a scooter with a golf bag and a golfer aboard. Tipsinah has eight of the cycles along with 56 golf carts. They cater to a variety of players —some local and others visiting the area as tourists. The 18-hole course located east of Elbow Lake near the shores of Pomme de Terre Lake opened as a nine-hole layout in 1982. The course expanded to 18 holes in the late ‘90s. Tipsinah is a par 70. Most golfers play the white tees according to Merrick, which demands they cover 6,066 yards of turf. The many grassy mounds that can be found on the course provide challenges for golfers on every hole. “They are modeled after (Native American) burial sites that are close to here,” said Tipsinah Mounds pro shop employee Katie Merrick.

Stalker Lake A par-35, 2,800 yard course on the south shore of Stalker Lake is busy this summer. The nine holes of Stalker Lake start at 15786 Golf Course Road, 5 miles east of Dalton. Tee times are required to play the busy course which also features an indoor-outdoor restaurant and bar.

Maplewood State Park manager Don Del Greco says the foliage on the trees is just starting to burst out right now. “The sunshine is getting through to the ground and the wildflowers are starting to bloom. “You can see long and far into the forest, as the trees start to fill out their leaves, and it's a great time to see spring wildflowers, and various native plants. The colors are different in the spring, they’re a bit more muted than the fall, but nevertheless, spectacular, a lot of pinks, purples, and yellows with the wildflowers.” He said it is also a good time to see the spring migration of birds because a lot of warblers and some sparrows are coming through. DelGreco reports that there has also been a variety of weather, which is more notable in the spring, between cool and warm, but it's a great time to hike and get out on the trails. As far as wildlife, visitors to Maplewood will see a lot of the local year-round residents of the park like deer and also fishers, which are medium-sized mammals, comparable in size to a domestic cat. Raccoons are plentiful, and it's even possible to see an occasional bear, but DelGreco says that is quite rare. Fishing is also starting to get underway, attracting a lot of early crappie anglers and sunfish. DelGreco says the park offers a great fishing pier as well. Beers Lake is one of many lakes in the park for many type of fish. The park also touches the east side of South Lake Lida, and there are two boat landings in JAMES ALLEN | RESORTER Maplewood, one on Beers Lake and the other on South MULTIPLE OUTDOOR VIEWS: Maplewood State Park wooded-landscape provides a great experience for visitors that are entering the park for Lida. There are also some smaller lakes in the park that the day or camping overtnight. require a little more of a hiking experience to get to them, and are beautiful and great to spend time on. Campgrounds are reopening this time of year as well. If visitors would like to reserve a spot, DelGreco says it has to be done in advance. All state parks use a central reservation system, where campers call a phone number or go online and make a reservation before arriving. Visitors can plan their camping experience up to 120 days in advance for making a reservation. s on i t c a r tt A e d i s d a Ro Whether you are a longtime resident of lakes country, or just stopping in for a week — there are a significant amount of sights to see. A common type of landmark throughout the area are statues, figures and sculptures based around a historical figure, military tribute or an animal. They mostly sit on the main stretch of their respective towns or at the entrance to signify something that stands out about their heritage. Here’s a rundown of a few of them:

LARGEST PELICAN This towering pelican sits near Main Street in downtown Pelican Rapids, standing at the base of the Mill Pond dam on the Pelican River. The pelican stands at 15 1/2 feet tall and was built in 1957. The dam underneath the pelican has been approved funding for repairs and new bricks that are being installed this summer. ASHBY COOT Standing 10 feet tall, this large coot represents the largest Ashby area sportsmen club, Coot Unlimited. The coot statue is just outside of Ashby on State Highway 78. FERGUS GOOSE In addition to the otter, Fergus Falls is also home to the world’s largest Canada Goose. It’s located next to the Otter Tail County Historical museum along Lincoln Avenue.

OTTO THE OTTER Staying with the oversized animal theme, you’ll find the world’s largest otter standing in Fergus Falls at Grotto Park, looking out over the lake. Named Otto the statue is 40 feet long and is made of concrete-covered metal.

s ion t c a r tt A e id s d Roa THE WAHPETON CATFISH Just a hop across the Red River, you’ll find the world’s largest catfish statue in Wahpeton. Though not in Otter Tail County or even Minnesota, it still takes home a largest creature title, weighing in at 5,000 pounds. “Wahpper” is also 40 feet long and 12 feet tall, and made of fiberglass. It was built to call attention to the excellent catfishing there. FRAZEE TURKEY This massive statue Frazee, the “Turkey capital of the world,” is bronze, weighs more than 5,000 pounds and is more than 20 feet tall. Big Tom has between 3,000 and 4,000 fiberglass feathers, which took D.W.O. Fiberglass Co. more than 2,000 hours to complete. This new Big Tom statue first arrived in August 1998, after the older paper mache version burned down.

PHELPS FLOUR MILL The Phelps Mill County Park is open from May until the end of October. The mill joined the ranks on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Construction was completed on the mill in 1889. It was a symbol of old rural life and the history of milling in rural Minnesota.

ORWELL DAM Just southwest of Fergus Falls, the dam was made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1953. It stands at 60-feet high and 1,355 feet at its crest. ROTHSAY VETERANS MEMORIAL This commemorative plot at 101 Otter Tail County Highway 11 consists of a plaque on a stand, two benches and lights that will shine on the Minnesota state flag, American flag and POW/MIA flag. The idea for the plot started from 17-year-old Underwood Eagle Scout Austin Link who garnered support from the Rothsay City Council and other veteran organizations. They helped build the monument in August 2015.

VINING SCULPTURE GARDEN This display exhibits the sculpture art of Ken Nyberg. His pieces include a cup of coffee, an elephant, Bigfoot and an astronaut, to honor Nyberg’s daughter, Karen, who is an astronaut.

INSPIRATION PEAK In the southern part of Otter Tail County is a collection of glacial features known as the Leaf Hills. The highest among them is Inspiration Peak, just west of Urbank. It rises 1,750 feet, about 400 feet above the surrounding countryside, making it the highest point in the county and one of the highest points in the state of Minnesota.

ROTHSAY’S PRAIRIE CHICKEN The large chicken statue is fitting for Rothsay, which was dubbed the “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota” in 1975. The statue is 13-feet-by-18-feet and weighs in at 9,000 pounds. It has been around since 1976. VERGAS LOON The world’s largest loon can be found in Vergas, overlooking Long Lake. It was built in the early 1960s, with money from the Vergas Fire Department. The 20-foot-tall loon was dedicated to a deceased town postmaster. DALTON THRESHING GROUNDS The threshing grounds are located along the Central Lakes Trail. The Dalton Threshing Show has been around since 1957, the weekend before Labor Day . Many steam engines operate throughout the grounds.

GRANT COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL A four-year development process resulted in this monument opening on July 2, 2015. The memorial features about 600 engraved bricks making up two black granite display cases, seven benches, granite plaques remembering soldiers and flags from various veteran organizations in the area. The bricks are purchased to honor soldiers and the money is donated to the organization to recognize the work done by veterans and veterans support groups. Each brick commemorates a Grant County vet, VFW Posts or other organizations that donated a brick to the memorial. The monument is located in front of Prairie Ridge Hospital at 1411 State Highway 79 in Elbow Lake.

PROSPECT HOUSE The Prospect House, located at 403 N. Lake Ave. in Battle Lake, was originally constructed in 1887 as a large wing for a hotel, it was renovated as a Georgian Revival style single-family home in 1929. The first house built on this site was constructed by James Allison “Cap” Colehour (1842-1938) and his wife Catherine (Kate) Augusta Catlin Colehour (c. 1951-1940) in 1882. Cap Colehour fought in the Civil War. His experience in the war, and the many letters, artifacts and mementoes are the basis for a museum now located in the house.

MINNESOTA WOMAN MONUMENT Just 3 miles north of Pelican Rapids on U.S. Highway 59, this monument stands on the site of the discovery of “The Minnesota Woman.” The skeletal remains of a woman believed to be as much as 20,000 years old were found in the 1930s while the highway was under construction. There is now a group in Pelican Rapids called the Minnesota Glacial Women Organization that are actively trying to get more educational materials together in the town to teach people about the history of the woman.

ocated in downtown Fergus Falls, Kaddatz Galleries hosts gallery art exhibitions that rotate every six to eight weeks. The main gallery is adjoined by Studio K and the main gallery window exhibits to provide display space for multiple artists simultaneously. The implementation of virtual gallery tours has lengthened the availability of exhibits, but Kaddatz Galleries offers so much more than exhibitions ,

HONORING A LEGACY: Charles Beck, local master printmaker who passed away in 2017, has a number of pieces displayed and for sale at Kaddatz Galleries. A printmaking studio and classes will be offered at the Kaddatz this summer. including a number of classes for adults, children, seniors and underserved populations. Kaddatz Galleries is a nonprofit organization with a mission to “foster visual arts education and appreciation and to maintain a gallery that celebrates the work of area artists and honors the legacy of Charles Beck.” In short, Kaddatz Galleries has a goal to nurture a healthy and productive area art scene in rural Minnesota. Providing space to support local and regional artists to display their work. Granting opportunities to the community through exposure to art is how they accomplish that goal. Charles Beck (Jan. 31, 1923-Sept. 12, 2017) was a Fergus Falls local master printmaker whose

work remains on display in many art galleries, including Kaddatz Galleries. Following his passing, the Beck family decided not to replicate or reprint his work, resulting in a finite collection, some of which is no longer available for purchase. Kaddatz Galleries has a limited collection of Beck artwork available for purchase and staff who are passionate about talking about his work and his legacy. In addition to the board of directors, Kaddatz Galleries is staffed by four and supported by many. Jess Torgerson, gallery curator and manager, tackles a wide range of tasks within her position, the main of which is to coordinate exhibition schedules, build and maintain relationships

with artists, and tackle the challenge of designing and hanging new exhibits. “Curating is a uniquely collaborative way to flex your creative muscles,” Torgerson explained. Also in charge of the gallery website, store, social media, online communication and shipping, she designs the marketing materials, graphics, and coordinates, records/edits virtual artist talks, and coordinates virtual tours which are photographed and set by Jesse Thorstad of Lakes Area 360 Tours. The face of Kaddatz Galleries is Amanda Callahan, executive director and educational coordinator. Callahan works directly with the board of directors and maintains financials, including grant writing and fundraising, which are

crucial to the success of the organization. Also a state certified art teacher, Callahan develops curriculum and manages every aspect of their art classes, supports the teaching artists, and often teaches classes herself. Scott Gunvaldson and Eric Santwire are both artSEE KADDATZ PAGE 24

ists and gallery assistants, often displaying their work, teaching classes, and aiding the gallery with show lettering, photography and more. All Kaddatz Gallery staff share a deep appreciation and love for the artwork of Beck, working with his original woodcut prints on a daily basis. “I love helping people pick out their own special piece of original art, pointing out subtle differ-

ences in each print and seeing the recognition on people's faces when they realize that each print is unique,” shared Torgerson. “I really love seeing the happiness that art truly brings to people's lives.” Kaddatz Galleries has a busy summer scheduled. The Frank Veden Charitable Trust provided sup-

port to manage a rotating mural project in the community. The mural will take art to the street and provide outdoor space for local and regional artists to express themselves. The mural, which will be created on large panels, will relocate every three months. A printmaking center funded by Lake Region Arts Council will be opening this summer as well. In honor of Beck, the

printmaking center will be membership based with a consistent schedule of printmaking classes available for all ages. Kaddatz Galleries is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 12-5 p.m. with extended hours until 7 p.m. on Thursdays. The gallery is closed Sunday and Monday. More information can be found at kaddatzgalleries.org or via social-media platforms Facebook and Instagram.

GLAMPING Get away without leaving luxuries behind By Johanna Armstrong

T

he word “glamping” is a fairly new addition to the English lexicon, a portmanteau of the words “glamorous” and “camping.” Glamping is a way for people to enjoy the outdoors away from home, without giving up some of the luxuries that conventional camping strips away. Rose Lake Glamping in Vergas is seeking to fill that niche in west-central Minnesota. Rose Lake Glamping, owned by Josh and Megan Hanson, offers two covered wagons that accommodate a family of four with a king-size

bed and bunk bed. “Families and friends are able to get away from the hustle and bustle to relax and recharge lakeside with many amenities and comforts that most miss when camping in the traditional way,” Megan says. Their glamping site offers a number of unique conveniences to patrons. “A few of the amenities that we offer over at the glamping site at Rose Lake with the wagons, there’s air conditioning inside the wagon, there’s electricity inside the wagon, and there’s also restroom facilities with showers, toilets and sinks,” says Josh. “Each wagon has their own

bathroom.” With lots of camping sites and rentals available in the area, Josh says, “We thought we’d try something a little more unique and provide an experience for the glampers.” Rose Lake Glamping opened in 2018. Megan said, “I wanted to offer guests and travelers a unique experience with the amenities of a cabin rental without the price tag. Being able to offer a one-of-a-kind vacation on the beautiful shores of a Minnesota lake.” This summer has been more active than in years past, Josh says. “It’s been very good this summer more than other summers with COVID, I think

a lot of people like the fact that they can come out and enjoy some open air outside of the city. There’s a lot of room in the area to social distance. It’s on an acre of land.” In addition to the indoor amenities, Rose Lake Glamping also has small kitchens for glampers to use and a vegetable garden. “We have a garden for them to use as well, so they can pick tomatoes and strawberries and beans and peas while they’re in season, and a variety of vegetables,” Josh says. Listings for Rose Lake Glamping can be found on a variety of rental sites including Airbnb and GlampingHub. Rentals cost $150 a night and guests have the option of renting one or both wagons. There’s also a dock with a swimming area and a pontoon for rent, a fire pit, grill, picnic table and laundry room.
