PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Welcome to the 2017 Ellensburg Rodeo What began as a small Wild West show in 1923 has grown into one of the world’s top ten rodeos, and in our opinion the best rodeo in the country. The Ellensburg Rodeo Board of Directors along with our volunteer organizations the Top Hands, the Ellensburg Rodeo Posse, and many others have worked hard all year to provide you with four days of one of the most unique western entertainment experiences in the country. This year the Ellensburg Rodeo is excited to bring back John Payne the One Armed Bandit to perform his one of a kind specialty act in all four Ellensburg Rodeo performances and in the Xtreme Bulls event! We guarantee John will keep you on the edge of your seat! We have had John back more than any other performer in the Ellensburg arena; and this year he’ll be inducted into the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame. Ellensburg Rodeo Board, President This year we will once again feature one of the best rodeo announcers in the sport of rodeo; Justin McKee along with rodeo clown JJ Harrison to entertain you with his antics all weekend long. The Ellensburg Rodeo entertainment kicks off Wednesday night, August 30th with the Hoedown Downtown featuring music and dancing for all ages. Thursday night August 31st we will feature Ned LeDoux, son of Chris LeDoux, and Zach Hinson, finalist on “The Voice,” at our Rockin’ the Arena concert. You won’t want to miss this concert! We are very excited to have Ned perform in the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena just as his father did many years earlier. Our four day rodeo kicks off Friday night September 1st with our Patriot Night event; please join us in this special performance honoring our law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line for us every day. Saturday September 2nd begins with one of the “horsiest” parades around, followed by the second performance of the Ellensburg Rodeo. Then, Saturday night don’t miss the explosive energy of Xtreme Bulls, where the top bull riders in the country will compete for their portion of $100,000! The Ellensburg Rodeo actually produced the very first Xtreme Bulls event in the country; our format was later picked up by the PRCA and is now a nationwide thriller. Sunday morning September 3rd please join us for Cowboy Church; this service is open to the public and is located in the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena in section KK near the Gold Buckle Room. Wear your pink all day to show your support for the cure for breast cancer at the third performance of the Ellensburg Rodeo. Over the past twelve years the Ellensburg Rodeo is very proud, through our Tough Enough to Wear Pink performances, to have donated almost $100,000. The monies donated stay right here in Kittitas County to assist women in screening for breast cancer. Attend the Ellensburg Rodeo Posse Show at 6:30 pm; the show is free to the public and you can root for your favorite posse as they compete for bragging rights in events such as pole bending, barrel racing, and the hide race. Labor Day, Monday September 4th is the Grand Finale of our rodeo for 2017 featuring the top cowboys and cowgirls competing for top honors and a whole lot of money; for many of them Ellensburg will make or break their chances to compete in the PRCA finals Las Vegas in December. As you enjoy the rich heritage of the past, dancing with the Yakama Indians in the Friendship Dance prior to each performance; and as you watch our daily one of a kind world famous grand entry, we also are looking into the future to provide high energy entertainment such as Bull Fighters Only (BFO). On Friday night watch the best bull fighters in the country compete against each other, going head to head with the meanest bulls in the sport of rodeo! While you’re enjoying the rodeo; if you’re over 21, be sure to “Escape to the Wild Side” and cool off with an ice cold Coors, live music and dancing at our Behind the Chutes (BTC) outdoor venue. There’s a good chance you’ll rub elbows with one of your favorite PRCA cowboys. In addition to BTC for adult beverages, you can check out the Saloon in the Western Village or our shaded Section 9 located next to the Gold Buckle Club under the grand stands. As you can see we have a lot to take in at the Ellensburg Rodeo. Please visit and support our local and national sponsors that help make this weekend possible. If you would like to be a sponsor or a member of our exclusive Gold Buckle Club, please visit our ticket office for information. This year with your help, and the help of our sponsors and Gold Buckle members, the Ellensburg Rodeo will pay out in excess of $500,000 attracting the world’s best cowboys and cowgirls making this one of the highest paying rodeos in the world!

JEFF FAULTUS

Thank you for making the Ellensburg Rodeo part of your Labor Day Weekend!

SADDLE BRONC

Saddle bronc riding

was born in the Old West where ranch cowboys would test themselves against each other and the rankest of unbroken horses.

Not much has changed. Today the cowboys are still climbing aboard bucking horses, and the competition between man and man – and man and horse – is still as intense as ever. Requiring strength, style and timing, a bronc rider must begin with his feet placed over the bronc’s shoulders, then synchronize his spurring action with the animal’s bucking style in order to receive a high score after the eight-second trip. Cody DeMoss, of Heflin, La., rides Blue Feathers to victory with a score of 86.5 points in the saddle bronc event on the final day of the Ellensburg Rodeo last year. BAREBACK Bareback riding is one

of the most physically demanding events in rodeo. Contestants must ride a bucking horse for eight seconds, holding nothing but a single-handhold rigging cinched around the horse’s girth.

2016 Ellensburg Rodeo Champion

TEDDY ATHAN Score // 164.5 points on two head Earnings // $5,130

A rider is disqualified if he touches his equipment, himself or the animal with his free hand, or if he is bucked off before eight seconds. Half the cowboy’s score comes from his spurring technique and “exposure” to the strength of the horse; the other half is determined by the bucking strength of the horse.

Driving every day. Safety is our priority.

TIE-DOWN ROPING A tie-down roping run begins with a mounted cowboy giving a head start to a calf of about 250 pounds, then chasing it down the arena. After roping the calf, the cowboy dismounts, runs down the rope (which is anchored to the saddle horn), lays the calf on its side and ties any three of its legs together with a “piggin’ string” he carried clenched in his teeth.

BULL RIDING 2016 Ellensburg Rodeo Champion

TYLER SMITH Score // 163.5 points on two head Earnings // $6,253

Bull

riding

is perhaps the easiest event in rodeo to understand. A cowboy tries to ride a bull for eight seconds while holding a simple rope looped around the bull’s midsection. The rules aren’t complicated: Don’t use your free hand, don’t fall off. Scoring is based on a possible perfect score of 100 points, with half deriving from the contestant’s skill and half coming from the bull’s performance.

one of the most unpredictable

It sounds simple enough but bull riding is also one of rodeo’s most dangerous and unpredictable events.

TEAM ROPING

it takes two 2016 Ellensburg Rodeo Champions

ERICH ROGERS ~&~ CORY PETSKA HEADER

Team roping

requires precise timing and anticipation between mounted header and heeler. The header’s job is to rope the steer around the horns, neck, or a hornneck combination, then turn the steer so that the heeler can rope both of the steer’s hind legs. The clock is started when the ropers leave their boxes, and it stops when their ropes are taut and their horses are facing each other. If a heeler catches only one leg, a five-second penalty is assessed. If the header fails to give the steer its allotted head start, the team receives a 10-second penalty.

BARREL RACING Barrel Racing

is a “ladies only timed event in which the rider must successfully ride around three 55-gallon barrels placed in a cloverleaf pattern as quickly as possible. The clock is the judge and begins when the horse crosses the starting line. The rider must perform two turns to the left and one to the right or two turns to the right and one to the left. Riders can brush the barrels, but if one is knocked down, a five-second penalty is added to her time. The fastest time wins.

STEER WRESTLING In steer wrestling,

also known as bulldogging, cowboys compete against each other and the clock. The event requires strength, speed and good timing. Cowboys begin in the box atop their horse and a barrier is drawn across the entrance. A steer is loaded into the chute. When the rider is ready he simply nods and the steer is released.

2016 Ellensburg Rodeo Champion

BAYLOR ROCHE Score // 14.4 seconds on 3 head Earnings // $6,963

Horse and rider chase the steer and when in position, the rider leans over and jumps off his horse and grabs the steer by its head. The cowboy must then wrestle the steer to its side to stop the clock. Winning times are in the three- to four-second range. If a rider breaks the barrier coming out of the box he receives a 10-second penalty.

WILD COW MILKING You don’t have to be a champion cowboy or decorated barrel racer to get competitive in the arena. Wild cow milking is a community event held each year at the Ellensburg Rodeo. Teams from the community form in honor of charity to win bragging rights and a bit of glory. The event works just like it sounds. Teams of men and/or women wrestle a cow that’s been released into the arena and try to milk her. One teammate begins on horseback and ropes the cow while the other team member wrestlers her. The first teammate then dismounts and tries to milk the cow. The team that gets a drop of milk in a small bottle and brings it back to the judges in the shortest amount of time wins. Jason Minor and Ruly Stingley team up to make a 26.8 second run, winning the wild cow milking championship at the Ellensburg Rodeo last year.

Kittitas County Sheriff Gene Dana said this is the first time law enforcement has been honored on Patriot Night and it’s particularly important to highlight what law enforcement agencies do to protect individuals in America.

Dana said the concept of sheriff was carried over from England to America. “The issue I think they want to highlight (at Patriot Night) is there are

Behind the Badge

To give rodeo-goers more of an idea of what the families, agencies and communities go through when an officer is injured or killed in the line of duty, a Washington-based foundation called Behind the Badge will be in attendance. Gayle Frink-Schulz, program-services director for the group, said Behind the Badge has been around for 20 years in Washington state to serve law enforcement officers and families. The organization supports families if there’s

been a death in the line of duty, assisting with everything from memorial planning to long-term needs. “We come along having walked the journey before,” she said. Kittitas County Sheriff Gene Dana said the foundation will be there to hand out information on how to support the Behind the Badge and the Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial, which commemorates the lives of officers who have died in service. The memorial wall in Olympia is inscribed with 310 names. Frink-Schulz said the group also has an annual conference to provide training to law enforcement officers in navigating

family life and what can be a difficult line of work. While Behind the Badge often steps in during traumatic times, the group also likes to take part in community celebrations and to come together when it’s lighthearted and fun, which is what the Ellensburg Rodeo is all about, Frink-Schulz said.

The concept of the sheriff started in the 9th century in England, and grew in importance up to and through the Norman invasion of England in 1066, according to the National Sheriff’s Association. The duties of the sheriff included keeping the peace, collecting taxes, maintaining jails, arresting fugitives, maintaining a list of wanted criminals, and serving orders and writs for the Kings Court. Most of those duties are still the foundation of the sheriff’s responsibilities in the United States. The concept of sheriff, because of the vast British Empire, was exported to places such as Canada, Australia, India, and, of course, the American Colonies. The first sheriff in America is believed to be Captain William Stone, appointed in 1634 for the Shire of Northampton in the colony of Virginia. In America, the office was modified over time to fit democratic ideals.

SATURDAY SHOW DEDICATION

Ken Peterson

Saturday • Sept. 2 Saturday’s Ellensburg Rodeo will be dedicated to Ken Peterson, longtime Ellensburg Rodeo volunteer and Ellensburg Rodeo Board Director, who passed away in January. “People say that somebody is salt of the earth and it’s a line that’s easily tossed around, but with Ken that’s the truth,” said Brad Fitterer, a long-time friend. “He really did understand what it was to work hard and believe in what he was doing. If he believed in something, then he was all in.” Ken was born in Ellensburg and spent his youth involved with both 4-H and Future Farmers of America. Zora Peterson, Ken’s wife, said he was a supporter of the junior livestock auction, 4-H and FFA throughout his life. He was passionate about giving back to the community, and one of his biggest passions was the Ellensburg Rodeo. Ken served on the Ellensburg Rodeo Board from 1986 to 2008 and was president of the board from 2000-01. He also worked on projects like the Buckaroo section, new bucking chutes, the Gold Buckle Room and the Western Village.

Ken Peterson served on the Ellensburg Rodeo Board of Directors from 1987-2008. The Saturday, September 2 Ellensburg Rodeo performance is dedicated to him

His biggest achievement was as Photo contributed director of the grounds and general services, which involved making sure the other business people on the board. the rodeo arena dirt was up to snuff for Ken not only brought his talents as a businessman and really as a financial the contestants. wiz, but he also understands the soil “He was not one of the cowboys, and what the professional rodeo world but he did understand the dirt,” wanted in an arena and he worked Fitterer said. “That was one of the really hard to achieve that.” things that separated him from a lot of 36

He said that Ken realized how important it was to make sure the dirt wasn’t too rocky, sandy or hard. Ken didn’t want to put people at risk and took pride in knowing what they needed and wanted to successfully compete in the rodeo.

Ken’s commitment to the rodeo can be summed up in story Fitterer described: one summer after a concert had been held in the rodeo arena and straw bales had been used as seating, Ken stayed until after 4 a.m. to clean the straw up in the arena to make sure it was ready for the next day’s competition. “He didn’t go home at all that night,” Fitterer said. “That’s how dedicated he was.”

Ken started the first coin-operated car wash in Ellensburg in 1965 and sold it when he went into the Air Force from 1965 to 1969. After he was discharged, he worked in San Francisco for Florsheim Shoe Company.

“He didn’t go home at all that night, that’s how dedicated he was.”

“He knew the value of hard work and how to take care of money,” Fitterer said. “He was an astute business man.”

Zora said Ken liked to keep everything organized, and his pick-up truck was in pristine condition. He had lunch with his father, Chriss Peterson, every day usually at Bar 14. He bought Zora her dream car, a 1957 Chevy, for her 45th birthday.

He then returned to Ellensburg in 1975 and bought back his car wash while also working with his father at Peterson Equipment. He opened up Ken’s Auto Wash on Main Street and another selfservice station on University Way. He bought a Quick Lube on Main Street and in 1995 also opened up a car wash and Quick Lube in Sunnyside. He had a passion for Corvettes and belonged to the Ellensburg Corvette Club. He also worked with wood and built furniture.

“It was my first car when I was in high school and I had to get rid of it,” she said. “I always wanted another one, so Ken made sure I got one.”

“He was an absolute great guy with a great sense of humor,” Fitterer said. “He was so full of love and so giving. He loved his wife and he loved all of his kids. He left us way too early.”

He was also a part of the Ellensburg School District Vocation Advisory Committee, the Ellensburg Civil Service Board, The Ellensburg City Council from 1979 to 1983. He was a founding director of Kittitas Valley Bank from 1992 to 2000, which is where he met Zora.

SUNDAY SHOW DEDICATION

Warren and Pat Hall Sunday • Sept. 3

The spirit of the West is alive and well in Warren and Pat Hall’s household. Historic photos of the rodeo and Western art are proudly displayed on the walls and shelves around their home, including a 1990 Ellensburg Rodeo poster to commemorate the year they moved in. It’s fitting given they’ve spent about 50 years volunteering at the Ellensburg Rodeo. They will be recognized for their labor of love on Labor Day weekend when Sunday’s rodeo performance will be dedicated in their honor. Pat has been attending the Ellensburg Rodeo pretty much all of her life. Her father was president of the Yakima Sheriff’s Posse and would ride in the parade. She started volunteering for the rodeo because her daughters were involved in 4-H and Warren was involved in the rodeo. At the time, Rodeo Director Wally Dillon asked her if she would help hand out tickets to contestants and posse members. “I was there anyway, and I just got hooked,” she said. “I enjoyed helping and have stayed on to this day.” She then transitioned to a seat usher in the old Buckaroo section. When the new Buckaroo seats were built, she started work in the announcer’s booth, and hasn’t left, helping with the sound and scoreboard. Pat helps put up photos on the big screen as people are announced. “I work with the scoreboard guy to make sure he gets the right person on the screen in the split second they are being announced,” she said. Pat was one of the original Top Hands, and was the Top Hand secretary for 27 years. Additionally, Pat worked with a rodeo director to be chair of the rodeo merchandise committee, chair of the autograph signing committee and chair of the Children’s Activity Corral. She said one of her favorite parts of the rodeo is how polite everyone is to one another. Pat is now an emeritus member of the Top Hands, which means she helps out with Top Hand related activities and mentors new members.

Starting as a teen

Warren was just 15 when he first started helping out at the rodeo. He started volunteering to sort stock in the timed event chutes. “I thought it was the greatest thing. I had never done anything that made me feel that good,” he said. “It was the atmosphere I longed to be around.” Warren is one of three individuals who are still alive and helped during that time with the timed chute events. “I was just in awe of those people and wanted to learn as much as I could,” he said. “I could sit and listen to them tell stories all day. I guess I did a good job because they were always very nice to me and made me feel like I was needed.”

His second job, which lasted about three or four years and consisted of pushing the calves and steers out of the chute when the gate was opened, which worked out well because he had a chance to watch his favorite part of the rodeo — the rough stock events. “You got pretty dirty,” he said. “I was happy to have that job because prior to that the only rough stock event I saw was the bullriding because timed events were over and we weren’t sorting cattle.” For a couple years, he worked at the east end gate directing the rough stock and time events cattle towards the arena exit. Around the same time, he became a member of the Ellensburg Rodeo Posse. He was a part of the posse from 1984-87. After his Grand Entry duties as a posse member, he would assist in the arena area where needed.

MONDAY SHOW DEDICATION

Alan MacRae

Monday • Sept. 4 Monday’s Ellensburg Rodeo performance will be dedicated to longtime rodeo competitor, judge and fan Alan MacRae, who passed away in February. Alan was born in Idaho, and moved to Ellensburg when he was 2. He graduated from high school in 1977 and attended Walla Walla Community College where he was a part of the rodeo team and participated in calf roping, team roping and steer wrestling. He competed in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association finals in Louisiana in 1979.

“Rodeo was his passion. There wasn’t a time he wasn’t doing something in rodeo.” — Kim MacRae

and Kim, who met at Walla Walla Community College, married in 1983 and moved to Centerville. He worked for the Centerville School District for 10 years as a coach and teacher and the Lyle School District for 22 years as a physical education teacher. He retired in 2016. Kim said Alan was a fair person, which showed through both rodeo judging and when he was teaching. “He was quiet, but, in my eyes, he was a teacher and he was always drawn to kids. Kids had a special place for him,” Kim said.

Kim MacRae, Alan’s wife, said he enjoyed judging and calf roping and was drawn to rodeo because of his father, Ken MacRae, who is a veterinarian and involved with the Ellensburg Rodeo. “I don’t remember a time when we haven’t gone (to the Ellensburg Rodeo) as contestants or going to support Alan,” she said. “Rodeo was his passion. There wasn’t a time he wasn’t doing something in rodeo.”

Alan also was known for his wit and jokes. Kim said Alan always knew how to push her buttons, and somehow always tricked her, even though they had been together for a long time. Ken said Alan had been around rodeos since the time he could walk and it was a big passion. Alan competed in calf roping, steer roping, team roping and steer wrestling. He was a life-long member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and was a Northwest PRCA judge for the 20 years. After his retirement from judging, he worked as chute boss and ran the time event barrier at many Northwest rodeos.

“He could always make me react. Forever and always,” she said.

Alan continued to tell jokes when he going through radiation, Kim said. Tommy Pratt went to high school with Alan in Ellensburg and was friends with him for more than 40 years. Alan was always playing practical jokes when he was growing up, and had a great sense of humor. “He was a jokester, but he was brilliant,” he said. “He was one of a kind.”

Kim said he would come the day before the rodeo to help set it up and always wanted to make sure the rodeo was professional and the competitions were fair.

Pratt and Alan had kids close in age and both were involved in the rodeo. Pratt and Alan coordinated and judged high school rodeos together.

Alan attended Central Washington University after his time at Walla Walla and received a degree in elementary education. He later went on to receive his masters from Portland State University. He

"He was a real fun loving guy," Ken said. "He was a great guy and we're going to miss him for sure."

RODEO

CLOWN JJ Harrison From small towns stops to the National Finals Rodeo, Ellensburg Rodeo clown JJ Harrison has a knack for putting people at ease and entertaining a crowd. Harrison grew up in Okanogan, where his love for rodeo began in high school. He joined the rodeo team at Washington State University as a bull and bronc rider, until he gradually realized he was a “wimp” and migrated to team roping. Harrison moved to Walla Walla where he taught social studies and science to middle schoolers for eight years. At the same time, Harrison worked rodeo events after getting discovered by Pat Beard of the Beard Rodeo Company. Beard was the first to recognize Harrison’s talent and hired him for a bull riding event in Vancouver. “I realized right from this early event I had a knack for making people laugh,” Harrison said. “My whole life I’ve been an entertainer.” After getting his PRCA card in 2007, he worked his way as a barrelman and professional entertainer into bigger and better rodeos, largely thanks to his goofy antics and hustle as a promoter. Harrison finds humor in every situation, and his easy banter with rodeo announcer Justin McKee keeps the action flowing at the Ellensburg Rodeo. His skill interacting with audience is a plus for the rodeo. A lively crowd makes for better competition, and contestants regularly comment on the Ellensburg crowd’s enthusiasm. A rodeo, especially a big one like Ellensburg’s, has many moving parts, from the riders to the helpers behind the gate. But when you stop to think about who the crowd really spends the most time interacting with, it’s the rodeo clown, Harrison said. JJ Harrison entertains the crowd at the Ellensburg Rodeo. ELLENSBURG RODEO POSSE

Whether it’s a parade, a youth horse show, a community event or the Ellensburg Rodeo itself, members of Ellensburg Rodeo Posse serve as ambassadors for the Kittitas Valley.

Their bright yellow shirts are just part of the story. The Ellensburg Rodeo Posse was the brainchild of Dr. John P. Richardson and Clifford Kaynor, the former owner of the Daily Record and the thenpresident of the Ellensburg Rodeo Association board of directors. Richardson was a physician who made trips to California on business. While there, he observed the San Francisco Sheriff’s Posse. He had the idea to develop a posse to sell the Ellensburg Rodeo throughout the state.

Celebrating the western way of life Members of the Ellensburg Rodeo Posse ride their horses during the Rodeo Parade. Photo by Brian Myrick/Daily Record

The idea for a posse started in 1939, and the group made its first debut in the 1941 Ellensburg Rodeo Parade with 26 members. During World War II, the posse stepped up to the challenge and formed a horse show and pageant in the arena to replace the rodeo.

when requesting to join. The posse also has non-riding members who help with the youth shows, junior rodeo, concession stands at the junior rodeo and prize ride. Outside of events, the Rodeo Posse practices every Tuesday at the Rodeo Arena.

Today, the posse remains a crowd favorite at the Ellensburg Rodeo. Members ride in the rodeo grand entry, parade, perform drills, escort the Rodeo Royal Court, and put on the Sunday night show. Posse members also promote the Ellensburg Rodeo at parades and events around the region.

Women are welcome to apply to be a part of the Rodeo Posse, and go through the same process that men do

YAKAMA

INDIAN NATION Visit the Yakama Indian Village Everyone is welcome to visit the Yakama Nation Village at the Alder Street entrance to the rodeo, where tribal members are available to answer questions and share their culture with the community. Tribal members also perform traditional dances during the Kittitas County Fair.

A time-honored tradition The Yakama Nation has been a part of the Ellensburg Rodeo since the rodeo started in 1923, though tribal members have gathered in the Ellensburg area at the end of summer for countless generations. Each Ellensburg Rodeo begins with members of the Yakama Nation moving down Craig’s Hill and into the rodeo arena. Several members of the tribe come down on horseback to symbolize the way the tribe came into the valley for countless years before settlers came to the area. The Kittitas Valley was one of the last stopping points for the Yakamas before they started for winter camps. Dressed in their finest regalia, the tribe also opens each night of the rodeo with a traditional dance in the center of the arena. Spectators often are invited to join.

When the tribe is not at the rodeo grounds, visitors can find the tribe’s camp at the adjacent fairgrounds. About 25 to 30 teepees are in the village and more than 75 people participate. Many families have been coming for several decades. Tribal members also participate in the Ellensburg Rodeo parade on Saturday and dancers perform at the Kittitas County Fair. KING COUNTY POSSE

The Ellensburg Rodeo forged an alliance with the King County Posse in 1943, and that partnership endures to this day. The famed King County Posse, with their silver saddles on golden palominos, has ridden and performed in the Ellensburg Rodeo ever since. Founded in 1941 as the King County Sheriff’s Posse, this non-profit, all volunteer organization was started by a group of businessmen who practiced horsemanship for sport and for pleasure.

The King County Posse members were at Silver Saddles on Golden Horses one time commissioned deputy sheriffs subject to call should an emergency arise. They also aided law enforcement officers by assisting in search and rescue operations.

You can learn more about the King County Posse at www.KingCounrtyPosse.com

Today’s posse is featured annually in the Seafair, Cle Elum, Olympia and Ellensburg Rodeo parades and has competed in precision drill competitions across the state. Inducted into the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2005, the King County Posse still plays a major role in the opening ritual of the Ellensburg Rodeo by riding in the grand entry and posting the American flag around the arena for the national anthem.

SPONSOR FLAG CARRIERS

The flag carriers are an integral part of the Ellensburg Rodeo. Each day of the event, they participate in the grand entry and later travel at high speeds during the flag presentation. On Saturday, they join in the Ellensburg Rodeo parade, and carry sponsor flags down the streets of Ellensburg. While Ellensburg’s flag carriers make it look easy, the job takes experience and practice — both on the part of the horse and rider.

ROTARY COWBOYS Long time rodeo supporters get an update A group with a long history of supporting the Ellensburg Rodeo, Kittitas County Fair and local youth in the community is getting an update. The Chamber Cowboys are now the Ellensburg Rotary Cowboys, with the Rotary Club of Ellensburg taking over from the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce. The Rotary club is often called Noon Rotary, and is one of four clubs in the county. The cowboys have a long history in the community. The all-volunteer group originally started in 1972 to promote the fair and rodeo. The group helps organize a community pancake breakfast two weeks before Labor Day weekend, brings a “two-headed” convertible car to local parades and events, and sells buttons to raise money for local youth.

The Rotary Cowboys’ two-headed car, equipped with horns and a funny horn, was acquired in 1974. The “Enforcer” was originally a 1960 Dodge station wagon, which was extended and had a front end from another 1960 Dodge welded to the frame. It was built locally in 1972 by Slim Martin for the Ellensburg Jaycees. Throughout the years, volunteers and local businesses have maintained the car.

The group presented its annual XX, or Double Cross, ordinance to the Ellensburg City Council on Aug. 7. The ordinance allows the cowboys to “arrest” anyone who doesn’t have a button or is

She has an associate of arts degree, massage therapy license and a diploma in hotel, restaurant and event management. After the completion of her reign, she plans to return to college to obtain a bachelor’s degree in graphic design with a minor in communications. “As a first-generation rodeo competitor, I have experienced the welcome you get when attending any rodeo event,” she said. “I want to be that warm welcome to new fans and rodeo participants alike. NED LEDOUX RETURNS FOR ‘ROCKIN’ THE ARENA’

A longtime tradition will return to the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena on Aug. 31 when country music singer Ned LeDoux performs during the “Rockin’ the Arena” concert. If that name seems familiar it’s because his dad, Chris LeDoux, was the last person to perform in a major arena concert at the Ellensburg Rodeo almost 20 years ago.

8 P.M., THURSDAY, AUGUST 31 AT THE ELLENSBURG RODEO ARENA Country singer Ned LeDoux, with Yakima singer Zach Hinson opening.

“I was there for that last performance in Ellensburg,” Ned said. “I know Ellensburg is one of the bigger rodeos in the Northwest and I’m just proud to be back there and bringing some live music back to the rodeo.” Kerry Clift, Ellensburg Rodeo Board of Directors Gold Buckle Club Director, said the idea of having a musical artist start the rodeo festivities came from the Las Vegas Rodeo. And the arena concert brings back a tradition that started at the Ellensburg Rodeo years ago. “We kind of wanted to bring that back in a sense that we have a true kick-off to our rodeo weekend on Thursday night,” he said. “A lot of modern country has gotten more hip-hop country. Ned is true country rodeo music. People (at the Ellensburg Rodeo) are real cowboys and real country people, we thought it would be a good time.”

Tickets are $2800 74

“What I’m doing isn’t too far from what my dad did. If you listen to the EP, you’ll realize this apple didn’t fall too far from the tree,” Ned said. “I can only write and perform songs that I can relate to. I write songs about the ranch and the West, family and traveling. I’ve never done the rodeo, but I grew up in the rodeo ranch family so I know enough to write about it and sing about it. I try to keep it as Western as possible.”

“I’m just proud to be back there and bringing some live music back to the rodeo.” — Ned LeDoux Clift said the concert was a way to combine the Gold Buckle summer party with a concert for everyone to attend. “We thought it was a good tribute to Chris LeDoux since he was the last one at the Ellensburg Rodeo and now where Ned’s career has taken off and thought it would be real cool to have him as our main act for that Thursday night,” he said.

Musical Roots

Ned was a drummer in his dad’s band Western Underground since 1998 and he continued to tour with the band after Chris passed away in 2005. Ned has been playing music since he was about 5 years old when he got his first drum set. He said he knew from that moment on he wanted to play music. Ned started his first band when he was 14 out of Wyoming called Cow Town and eventually joined another touring band once he was out of high school.

“I’ve been playing music my whole life. There’s just something about being on stage and entertaining, I don’t know anything else,” he said. “Playing music live is a lot of fun.” In Ellensburg, Ned will perform “about 70 percent” of his dad’s songs and some of his original tracks on an EP he produced over the last couple years, he said.

PAST PERFORMANCES Johnny Cash 1984 Lee Greenwood and Sylvia 1985 Pro-Wrestling 1986 John Schneider and Tanya Tucker 1987 Glen Campbell and Sweethearts of the Rodeo 1988

Clift said there were unfinished, unrecorded songs in the attic of Ned’s mom’s house that Chris had started on before his death and Ned finished and recorded the songs, which he will perform at the Ellensburg Rodeo as well. “There’s at least two of his songs that he will be singing and are on his iTunes that are actually Chris LeDoux’s songs that just never got recorded that his (Ned’s) mom just happened to find,” Clift said.

Opening Act

The opening act for Ned is a local country singer, Zach Hinson, who is from the Yakima area. Hinson tried out for “The Voice,” which is a popular competition-style TV show for singers. “He’s going to bring a lot of electricity and bring a pretty good party for the first hour of the concert,” Clift said. JJ Harrison, a Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association rodeo clown, will emcee the concert. Clift said about half an hour before Hinson hits the stage, Harrison will entertain the crowd and give out prizes. He will also entertain in between acts and will bring the party into the arena. “It’s going to be fun to have his energy amongst the entertainment,” Clift said. Ned said he loves to perform at rodeos like the Ellensburg Rodeo because the audiences relate well to his songs. “There’s a sense of freedom and when you write a song and you perform it live and you see someone sing that song back to you—there’s something really special about that, I can’t put my finger on what it is. It’s just really cool to know that your music has reached somebody,” he said. “When you’re playing live and you see a bunch of people singing that song you wrote in your basement. It’s pretty neat.”

RANCHING HONOREES “The organization wanted to focus on the younger generation for their contributions.” — Craig George, Cattlemen President

This year’s Kittitas County Cattlemen’s Association banquet and awards put the focus on the future. Ethan George, livestock manager at Foothills Farm, was awarded the Young Cattleman of the Year award, Fred Schnebly received the Lifetime Achievement Award and Brenda Hart was given the Cattlewoman of the Year award. The event was in February at the Kittitas County Event Center at the fairgrounds in Ellensburg. A Cattleman of the Year was not named this year, Cattlemen President Craig George said. Instead, the organization wanted to focus on the younger generation for their contributions.

Young Cattleman of the Year:

Ethan George

Ethan George, this year’s Young Cattleman of the Year, has been involved in his father’s cattle ranch from a young age and participated in 4-H and FFA in the community. Through his participation in judging and raising livestock, he received a scholarship at Casper College in Wyoming, and graduated with a double major in animal science and range management. After college he returned to the family ranch and took

over livestock management. He continues to be involved in judging livestock and has begun to raise his own herd of Angus cattle. “I feel like as a young person, I don’t deserve to receive this award, but I feel honored,” Ethan George said. He is a fifth generation rancher in the valley and enjoys doing a job that keeps him outside and out of an office cubicle. He manages 80 head of mixed Angus-Hereford cattle. “I enjoy being able to say at the end of the day that I am helping feed people across the world instead of just pushing numbers for someone,” he said.

Did you know? Buck Minor was the first Ellensburg Rodeo Director to be featured on a beer token.

Lifetime Achievement:

Fred Schnebly

Fred Schnebly was presented with this year’s lifetime achievement award. Schnebly participated in 4-H and sports in high school and then went to University of Washington and graduated in 1971 with a degree in business finance. Schnebly didn’t plan on farming at first, neighbor and local rancher Sam Kayser said. But he stuck around and he and his wife, June, continued working on the family ranch. The Schnebly ranch was the first registered brand in the state of Washington and the family used to manage 1,000 to 1,200 head of cattle at one time. In the 1990s the Schneblys started phasing out the cattle business and increased their hay farming. “They have one of the top three farms in the valley and they continue to produce,” Kayser said. Schnebly has been involved in growth management discussions, served on the Kittitas County Planning Commission and has spent 12 years volunteering with the Cattlemen’s Association.

Schnebly said he hopes his children will be active in the cattlemen and wants to continue his involvement for years to come. The family manages 150 head of a crossbreed of Angus cattle.

Cattlewoman of the Year:

Brenda Hart

This year’s Cattlewoman of the Year is Brenda Hart. Hart has been an eager and willing member of the group, presenter Marty Stingley said. Hart joined committees and worked several events this year such as the Spirit of the West, the Junior Livestock Auction, the Beef Counts food distribution, the Northwest Explore Beef and handles cookbook sales. She is Kittitas County CattleWomen vice president and also the secretary of the Washington State CattleWomen. She not only helps manage the livestock at her home, but runs a mini-mart in the city of Kittitas. She has four daughters and five grandchildren. “Her work ethic is only surpassed by her smile, her humor and her warmth for all who cross her path,” Stingley said. Hart has been ranching for 30 years and loves working outdoors. The Harts have 40 head of cattle, which are mixed breed Angus. She has raised animals her whole life, she said. She grew up in Snoqualmie where she worked with thoroughbred horses and some cattle. She not only helps out at the mini-mart in the city of Kittitas, but works full-time for Puget Sound Energy in Ellensburg in customer service. She enjoys riding horses and raising cattle. 2017 ELLENSBURG RODEO

Josey Shannon, 18, is the recipient of this year’s Ellensburg Rodeo scholarship. Shannon is the daughter of Robert Shannon and Cathy Caraway, and is a graduate of Ellensburg High School. She’ll be attending South Plains College in Texas this fall where she will study pre-physical therapy. At age 16 she won fourth in the nation in breakaway roping in the National High School Finals Rodeo, and has been involved in state high school rodeo, FFA, FBLA and EHS Link crew.

“Growing up in a small-town rodeo community pushed me to strive in rodeo and and has taught me the value of caring for others,” she wrote in her application. Her career goal is to work at a physical therapy riding center. She’s worked as a ranch hand at the Lazy Rafter S Ranch in Ellensburg since 2013. The Ellensburg Rodeo is pleased to provide a $1,000 scholarship toward her educational expenses.

She plans to compete in college rodeo for goat tying and breakaway roping.

PARADE

GRAND MARSHALS

Not one, but two champions were crowned in Kittitas County this past year.

The Ellensburg High School baseball team and Kittitas High School boys basketball team both won a state championship this past year and will serve as the 2017 Ellensburg Rodeo grand marshals. “It shows people are paying attention what the program has done,” said Ellensburg baseball coach Todd Gibson. Kittitas head coach Tim Ravet echoed Gibson’s enthusiasm. “It’s going to be an honor and a great experience for the kids,” Ravet said. “Both teams shows that sports connects communities regardless what us going on with their lives. Saturday morning, both teams will lead the Ellensburg Rodeo Parade down University and Pearl streets.

Ellensburg baseball

The Ellensburg High School baseball team started the season with four straight wins and then won 12 out of their next 13 games. Even though the Bulldogs lost to league-rival Selah in the district championship, Ellensburg rallied to win their next five playoff games including a 6-4 comeback win against Selah in the regional round of the state tournament and a 5-1 win against W.F. West in the state championship game at Yakima County Stadium. “It’s still amazing,” Gibson said. “There was a time right after we won I thought about it everyday. We saw highlights from the championship game over the summer and it’s just unreal.. Ellensburg graduated five seniors that contributed greatly to the team’s success and xx-3 overall record including co-CWAC MVP Xander Orejudos, Bryce Helgeson, TJ Schneider, Blake Gibson and Major Moffat.

The Bulldogs will return 12 players as they look to start on another mission to win a state title.

This past season, Kittitas was perfect as it finished with a 24-0 overall record and won the Eastern Washington Athletic Conference league championship and district championship before heading to Spokane Arena for the state tournament.

Kittitas basketball

While in Spokane, the Coyotes were forced to overcome a deficit in all three games and over the course of three days defeated Adna, St. George’s and Liberty high schools to win the title.

It didn’t take long for the Kittitas High School boys basketball team to turn its program around and winning their first ever state championship. Back in the 2015 season, the Coyotes won just three games, but improved the next season to a 17-7 record.

During the championship game against Liberty, Kittitas fought back as junior Bailey Gibson hit two clutch free throws to win. Kittitas graduated senior captains Drew Lamb and Bryan Arnold but return their entire starting lineup for next season.

RODEO POSTER ARTIST

Megan Abra Blessing This year’s Ellensburg Rodeo poster artwork, “Fired Up,” was originally created as an oil painting by artist Meagan Abra Blessing of Bozeman, Mont. “This painting is a tribute to the hard-working pickup men at every rodeo. These guys are athletes and professionals, and so are their horses,” Blessing said. “Their calm, steady presence and ability to react quickly in unpredictable situations keeps all two and four legged competitors safe and the events running smoothly and as on schedule as possible. This image perfectly captures the excitement of the rodeo and the skilled competence with which the pickup man and his horse go about quietly doing their job.”

After attending college with majors in equestrian studies and vocal performance, Blessing spent nearly 20 years teaching music and horsemanship, training and showing horses, raising a family and performing on occasion. In 2002, she made the transition from performing arts to visual arts and, in the process, found that her love of the West and her knowledge of horses heavily influenced her choice of subject matter.

PURCHASE THE POSTER Copies of the poster are available at the Ellensburg Rodeo office for $10, and $20 if signed.

Meagan’s love of the wild places of the West coupled with her passion for all things equine is evident in her lively, expressive paintings. Her work has been shown in several national exhibitions, including The Mountain Oyster Club Art Show & Sale, Tucson, Ariz., Out West Art Show & Sale, Great Falls, Mont., The Heart of the West, Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. She has been featured in various publications, including Western Art & Architecture, Big Sky Journal, Western Art Collector, and Southwest Art.

ELLENSBURG RODEO HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES Professional rodeo entertainer John Payne, the “One Arm Bandit,” and the Smith family will be inducted into the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame this year, according to a news release from the group.

The induction banquet is planned on Aug. 31 at Central Washington University and will include a “Hides of Fame” art auction to support a permanent Hall of Fame museum. Payne will be inducted as a participant, and the Smith family as a “pioneer rodeo family.”

The Smith Family For nearly 100 years, the Smith family has served the Ellensburg Rodeo in a remarkable number of roles. Throughout the 1920s and ‘30s rodeos, Laurel Burchard Smith Sr. served as an usher and ticket taker, beginning a volunteer tradition carried on by his son James Robert “Jimmie” Smith.

Jimmie, whose wife, Jean Johnson Smith, was descended from 19th century Kittitas Valley ranchers, directed the popular Ellensburg Rodeo “Cowboy Band” from 193443 and led them in the parade and at each rodeo performance. John Payne “One-Arm Bandit” For the last 30 years, Oklahoman John Payne has performed one of the most entertaining and sought-after acts in pro rodeo. An accomplished rider and animal trainer, Payne has been chosen as the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s “Specialty Act of the Year” 12 times. He is billed as the “One Arm Bandit” because he lost his right arm while working at a construction site when 7,200 volts of electricity went through his body for 10 seconds. He was medically dead for five minutes. Payne’s riding and animal act has evolved over the years. It now consists of him riding a mule named Moe while herding buffalo or Watusi long-horned cattle around the arena and up onto the top of his stock trailer while he cracks a bullwhip with his left arm. Payne has called buffalo “the meanest critter in North America” and said that the “buffalo tried to kill me almost every day for two years, and they’ve hooked me off the top of the trailer, twice, horse and all.” The “One Arm Bandit” brings to the rodeo and Ellensburg a touch of the Wild West Shows that characterized the West’s earliest rodeos. “One Arm Bandit,” John Payne at the Ellensburg Rodeo Parade in 2011. straight years (1971-78) before a broken arm sidelined him until his return to the NFR in 1983, where he placed 14th for the season.

Tommy Puryear qualified for the National Finals Rodeo nine times, eight of which were consecutive, from 197178, and then again in 1983. The Texas bulldogger also won the world title in 1974 and the NFR average crown in 1976. Puryear seemingly came from nowhere to beat ProRodeo Hall of Famer Tom Ferguson for the 1974 World Championship. Sitting eighth in the standings at mid-season, Puryear won $5,700 at two rodeos to move within a few hundred dollars of Ferguson, and would go into the Finals that year $659 ahead of the pack. In the 10th round of the NFR, Puryear was 0.17 seconds better than Ferguson to clinch the gold buckle. The 1974 win was Puryear’s fourth NFR trip, and he competed in 127 rodeos that year. He would be a top-money winner for eight

MIKE BEERS Team Roper Mike Beers, a heeler, won his 1984 world championship while roping with header Dee Pickett, who was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2003. Beers qualified for the NFR 23 times in team roping (1980-95, 1997-98, 2000-03, 2007). When Beers was only 9 years old, he started dreaming about being a championship roper. He convinced his dad to let him participate in a tie-down roping school that his older brother was attending. His father built an indoor arena, and Beers’ career path to rodeo stardom began. continued on page 94

CODY CUSTER Bull Rider Cody Custer started riding bulls at 13 years old. He qualified for the National Finals Rodeo every year from 1987 through 1992, when he won the world championship. One of his most-memorable rides was in Round 10 of the 1991 NFR, when he scored 94 points on Growney Brothers’ Wolfman. His previous high score had been 90 points on Skoal Pacific Bell at the 1988 Grand National Rodeo in San Francisco. In addition to his success in the arena, Custer rode for Hollywood – as a stand-in for Lane Frost’s character in the movie “8 Seconds.” At the time of his induction into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2017, he was still active in rodeo and helped conduct rodeo classes for aspiring pros.

RANDY CORLEY Contract Personnel Prior to his induction into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2017, Randy Corley had been selected PRCA Announcer of the Year 12 times (1984, 1990-96, 1998, 2003, 2011, and 2015). He also had been an announcer at the National Finals Rodeo 16 times. Originally a bareback riding and bull riding contestant, Corley started making radio commercials, then went to broadcasting school with the idea of becoming a rodeo announcer.

94

2017 ELLENSBURG RODEO

Corley has worked rodeos of all sizes – from Hill City, Kan., to San Antonio, Texas. He announced in Caldwell, Idaho, every year since 1982 and at Puyallup and Kitsap County, Wash., since 1983, and still did as of his induction in 2017. In 2005, he and daughter Amanda became the first fatherdaughter tandem to work the Wrangler NFR – as announcer and timer. The Oregon cowboy said a defining moment in his rodeo career came when he changed from heading to heeling in 1976 – and he started winning. Beers, nicknamed “Mr. Consistent,” and Pickett hosted roping schools during the winter and spring months. In 1993, Beers became the 11th cowboy to pass the $1 million mark in earnings.

BUCK RUTHERFORD All-Around Austin “Buck” Rutherford hailed from the small northeast Oklahoma town of Lenapah. Rutherford lived as he rode – with fearless abandon. Competing in bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc riding and steer wrestling as a member of the Rodeo Cowboys Association, Rutherford was described by fellow all-around cowboy Bill Linderman as “one of the most natural athletes that ever stuck a paw in a rigging or bull rope.” After placing second in the world in the all-around in 1952, his destiny was soon altered. A devastating car accident in November of the same year left Rutherford in a coma with skull fractures. Despite months of hospitalization, and doctors advising him to quit rodeo altogether, Rutherford returned for the 1954 season, miraculously winning the all-around

title while becoming the first cowboy to eclipse $40,000 in cash and prizes in a single year. He edged out fellow ProRodeo Hall of Famer Jim Shoulders by $440 to win the gold buckle. That year, his $14,976 in bareback riding was good for second-most in the world, and his $14,139 in bull riding earnings was third-best among RCA cowboys. Though Rutherford never notched an individual event title, he finished Top 5 in the world standings 11 times between 194957 in bull riding and steer wrestling.

ENOCH WALKER Saddle Bronc Rider Enoch Walker, the 1960 Saddle Bronc Riding World Champion and National Finals Rodeo average winner, took to the skies in his ascent to ProRodeo fame – qualifying for 10 NFRs during his 20-year tenure with the Rodeo Cowboys Association. Walker entered the 1960 season with a plan for earning the gold buckle that literally took flight, as he was known for having a knack for pinpointing the highest-paying rodeos and then finding ways to compete in two, or even three, rodeos on the same day. He teamed up with Paul Templeton, who flew Walker from one rodeo to the next when his rodeo road trips got too hectic. Walker arrived at the 1960 NFR in Dallas, Texas, leading the pack with $20,832 earned that season by placing 126 times at 56 rodeos and winning 21 rodeos throughout 1960, including Salinas, Calif., and Fort Worth, Texas. He rode all 10 horses at the NFR in Dallas, placing on five of them – winning the NFR average and the world title.

Wanda Harper Bush WPRA Barrel Racer Wanda Harper Bush was multitalented, becoming the most decorated cowgirl in the history of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (formerly the Girls Rodeo Association). When the GRA first formed in 1948, Bush was one of the first to sign-up. In fact, she carried card number 14 and later served on the Board of Directors. A daughter of Alvin and Gussie Harper, Wanda grew up roping and tying goats to help her father on their ranch. She graduated from goats to calves and was the talk of the arena even to the point of matching men. While in the sports world Billie Jean King is credited with being the first to match the men, it was in fact a Texas cowgirl and her horse, Eagle, that entered a match roping on six head against a man and Wanda won. It was not a story known far and wide because the humble cowgirl just went in there, took care of business and then moved on. Despite Bush’s desire for a quiet existence, she was a popular figure appearing in Rolling Stone magazine alongside rocker Bruce Springsteen and in the television game show, “To Tell the Truth.” Wanda passed away at the age of 84 from a heart attack.

Charmayne James WPRA Barrel Racing Charmayne James grew up in Clayton, N.M., the home of the very first barrel racing National Finals Rodeo. Her historic career was set in motion in 1982 when a bay gelding, Gills Bay Boy “Scamper,” found a home in James’ barn after paying just $1,200. Together they became the most iconic duo in the equine industry, dominating the barrel racing ranks from 1984 until his retirement in 1993. James won the first of 10 world titles at the age of 14 in 1984. James was the first WPRA member to wear the coveted No. 1 NFR back number in 1987 and became the first barrel racer to win $1 million in career earnings. James and Scamper won the NFR

average title six times (1984, 1986-87, 198990 and 1993). In 1996, Scamper became the first barrel horse inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. James added a cherry on top of her illustrious career winning her 11th WPRA world title and seventh NFR average title aboard Cruiser (Cruisin on Six) in 2002.

SMITH & VELVET Livestock Bareback horse Smith & Velvet was the definition of a late bloomer. The horse, which was honored as the PRCA’s top bareback horse four times (1977, as Mr. Smith, and then 1979-80 and 1982, as Smith & Velvet), didn’t become an award-winning bucker until he was into his 20s. When owner Bobby Christensen first started bucking the horse, Smith & Velvet would be good for five or six seconds, and then he would spin and stop. A lot of people told Christensen to get rid of the horse and that it would never reach its full potential. Instead, Christensen stayed the course and turned Smith & Velvet out for a few years. The horse’s comeback tour was complete when Christensen entered him in Oakdale, Calif., in the late 1970s, and he bucked off World Champion Jack Ward. From then on, Christensen knew he had a good horse, and the animal’s career took off. Smith & Velvet also faced five-time World Champion Joe Alexander – one of the greatest bareback riders of all-time – six times in his career, with man and beast each gaining the upper hand three times. Smith & Velvet died in 1983 in a tragic truck and trailer accident that killed many of Christensen’s prized NFR horses.

STAR PLAUDIT “RED” Livestock Star Plaudit holds a unique record in the world of professional rodeo, one that is not likely to ever be duplicated.

The sorrel gelding by Oklahoma Star Jr., out of Sunshine Plaudit, won two World Championships in the sport in a single year and contributed to a third, at the age of 12. Red, as he was affectionately known, carried his owner Sherry (Combs) Johnson to the GRA World title in the barrel racing and close family friend Tom Nesmith to the RCA world title in the steer wrestling and helped the Oklahoman also claim the RCA All Around championship, all in 1962.

BOB RAGSDALE Notable Bob Ragsdale was an all-around Montana cowboy, competing in steer wrestling, as well as steer roping and team roping. Qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo on 22 separate occasions, Ragsdale never won a world title, though his impact on rodeo has been profound. At the time of his induction, he was one of only four left-handed tie-down ropers to qualify for the NFR, and he did so for 15 consecutive years from 1961-75. In that 15year span, Ragsdale finished as high as fourth in the world, and never lower than ninth. Despite his less-than prototypical frame, the 5’10”, 160-pound Ragsdale also competed at the NFR in steer wrestling five times, with two qualifications in team roping as well. Ragsdale earned nine Top 10 finishes at the NFR in the all-around, including a second-place standing in 1972. Ragsdale also served as both the Vice President (1971-72) and President (1973-75) of the Rodeo Cowboys Association, and is credited as the one to propose the association include “Professional” to the organization’s formal title in 1975. His work atop the association saw an increase in sponsorship and prize money, while also growing the number of PRCA contestants. Ragsdale planted his roots in other ventures, such as alfalfa farming, an oil business, modeling for Sears and Roebuck & Co. from 1973-81, and running steer wrestling and tie-down roping schools.

ABOUT BRANDS Although the numbers of large cattle herds in Kittitas County have diminished there are still several families here who continue to ranch. For many families, branding remains a traditional spring event. Each brand is unique, and for the working rancher, serves its original purpose of proof of ownership. For those who no longer ranch, the brand is the Family Crest of the Old West. Brands are a source of pride handed down from generation to generation. The brand remains a rustic symbol of the perseverance and hardiness of cattle families of the past and today.
