From the Board of County Commissioners
W
elcome to the 2018 Kittitas County Fair and Ellensburg Rodeo. This is the time of year family, neighbors and friends come together and celebrate our county’s rich history showcasing livestock, agricultural produce, home and fine arts, family friendly entertainment, Carnival Rides, fair food Rodeo and much more! The Kittitas County Fair and Ellensburg Rodeo are enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year. People from across the state of Washington and beyond travel to celebrate in Kittitas County and are happy to be a part of our celebration learning about the beautiful place we all call home. Walking through the barns you are sure to meet some of Kittitas County’s youth who participate in 4-H. Meeting one of these members will leave you with an appreciation for our county culture. They are not only dedicated to
raising livestock and other activities, but teaching others about it as well. There is no shortage of entertainment available either. Make sure to enjoy the many shows, entertainers and carnival rides. While you are here,
make sure to attend the World Famous Ellensburg Rodeo that is rated one of the top 10 rodeos in the nation. The Kittitas County Fair and Ellensburg Rodeo would not be possible without the efforts of the Fair Board and Rodeo Board Directors. They put in an incredible amount of time to ensure the community has an event we can look forward to each year. While we enjoy these events on Labor Day Weekend they are working year-round to produce the event that is a part of Kittitas County tradition. If you see them walking around during the event make sure to thank them for their hard work and dedication. Have a great time at the 2018 Kittitas County Fair and Ellensburg Rodeo. I hope to see you there! Laura Osiadacz, Chairman Kittitas County Board of Commissioners

W
elcome to the 133rd Kittitas County Fair! First organized in 1885 by local farmers and ranchers, the annual county fair has always showcased its agricultural roots and celebrated its western heritage that our community has embraced for hundreds of years. We hope you come on out and see a piece of our agricultural heritage and history, check out the exhibits including the 4-H and FFA projects that many of our youth have worked hard on all year, visit our turn-ofthe-century town, pan for gold, get reacquainted with your neighbors and friends, and enjoy a safe, family friendly environment filled with carnival rides,
entertainment and fair food. Don’t forget to grab your cowboy hat and a ticket to the worldrenowned Ellensburg Rodeo, one of the top ten rodeos in the country. Our fair board and staff have worked hard to make this year’s fair bigger, better and more enjoyable than ever before. A shout out to all our fair volunteers and sponsors who make this event a reality with their continued support. The event would not be what it is today without their efforts and dedication. Thank you for making this community celebration the event of the year! Heather Harrell, President Kittitas County Fair Board

Admissions
From the Rodeo Hello Rodeo Fans and Welcome to the 2018 World Famous Ellensburg Rodeo. We have an action packed 6 days of excitement! It all starts Wednesday with our rodeo slack. We start rodeo slack again Thursday morning and end the day with a concert featuring Joe Diffie. Early Friday morning we finish our rodeo slack, and then round out the day with our first rodeo performance and Patriot Night dedication followed immediately by freestyle bullfights from the Bullfighters Only tour. We kick off Saturday with a parade downtown, and then head back to the grounds for an afternoon rodeo performance. Saturday night we host the Xtreme Bulls Tour World Finale. A rodeo performance on Sunday afternoon, then the free Sunday night Posse Show followed by our championship short go on Monday to finish out the weekend. I hope you can fit it all in! We are very happy to be featuring Joe Diffie for our 2nd annual “Rockin’ the Arena” concert. He will be performing Thursday evening in the Arena dirt. If you missed your chance this year, be sure to follow us on Facebook to see who will be performing in the future. Friday evening we will be paying tribute to local Vietnam War era veterans with a special thank you before our rodeo performance. Friday will end with American freestyle bullfighting. No swords or capes here, just a showdown between man and beast. Saturday starts with The Ellensburg
Parade which has been billed as one of the horsiest parades around! With its western theme, it attracts many mounted posse, Rodeo Royal Courts and a wide variety of other entries. Appearing in our rodeo performances are the Cowgirl Sweethearts Haley Ganzel and Lindy Nealey-Lica who both have been trick riding since a very young age. The ever entertaining JJ Harrison is back in the barrel and we are pleased to have Justin McKee announcing our rodeo and Xtreme Bulls performances. Be sure to get to your seats early and watch the Yakama Nation dance in the Arena. You can even join them for the Friendship Dance before each rodeo. Saturday night is the always sold out Xtreme Bulls World Finals. Forty of the world’s top bull riders will converge on the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena to take their shot at a $100,000 purse. This is the PRCA’s 2018 Xtreme Bulls Tour and it all ends in Ellensburg. Be sure to get your tickets early and see who is crowned 2018 Champion. At our Championship Monday performance you will most likely see cowboys and cowgirls competing in the arena who are headed to the NFR in Las Vegas. Winning Ellensburg often is what it takes to give these contestants the prize money they need to propel them to the National Finals Rodeo. During all that excitement be sure to stop by the world famous Behind the Chutes beer garden if you are over 21 for a cold beer

and some of the best country music and dancing in the state. At the heart of our rodeo, are the people who make it possible. Countless individuals and supporting groups put in hundreds of hours just to see the show go on every year. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank all those who make our Rodeo the great show that it always is. Frontier Village
t’s a spot where fairgoers can buy candy, pan for gold, and peek inside a pioneer cabin. Frontier Village, which offers a look at life during the early 20th Century springs to life once a year during the Kittitas County Fair. The village is made up of historic cabins and buildings moved from throughout the county. Visitors can buy penny candy and $1 pickles at Hunt’s General Store. Over at the Rocky Saddle Saloon, the saloon keeper sells root beer and other types of soda for $1.50 per bottle. Youngsters can also pan for gold at the Cooke Miners Supply
Company Cabin. School House No. 11, constructed in 1910, remains one of Kittitas Valley’s oldest standing school houses. Its history has enriched the lives of many fairgoers throughout the years and educational programs are offered inside. Another educational venture is the Robbins cabin, which offers a historic look into what life was like back in the day. Seventeen children were raised in the three-bedroom cabin that only had dirt floors. Visitors can walk through the family’s kitchen and bedrooms and get a feel for what life was like in the 20th Century.
Junior Livestock Auction
T
he 2018 Junior Livestock Auction at the county fair this Labor Day weekend is a symbol of the culmination of a year of hard work for 4-H members. The sale this year is set for 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. The event allows the youth to auction their project animals to the highest bidder and gain a return on their hard work and expenses in caring for their steers, goats, hogs, or lambs during most of the year. Their hope, year after year is they’ll get a good per-pound price at the sale for animals they’ve raised following modern livestock market standards and have trained for show ring display. Last year, the auction raised more than $460,000
and sold more than 200 head of livestock. If past sales are any indication, 4-Hers will likely get great support from a wide variety of family, friends, and businesses in and outside of the community. The event brings community together to support local youth, which buyers typically bid way above market prices. While the regular commercial market price can be less than $1 a pound, 4-H and FFA animals can go for $2-$6 per pound, depending on the species sold. The first animal to be sold each year at the sale is one donated for the Kittitas County 4-H Endowment Trust Fund. All money from the sale goes into the fund, and
the interest pays for ongoing costs related to the 4-H Club program through the county.

ack for an encore performance is the Ellensburg Big Band! Founded in 2011, the Ellensburg Big Band is an 18 member classic Swing Jazz Band in the tradition of the wonderful dance bands of the 1940s and ‘50s. Featuring favorites from the Glen Miller and Count Basie Bands, they also play a wide variety of jazz standards and modern styles. The musicians represent a broad section of the Ellensburg community, including college students, music educators, and a colorful bunch of local professionals all of whom treasure the

County Fair, The Ellensburg summer concert series, and in 2014 performed in Sanda City Japan.

They have also performed for the St. Patrick's Day Community Celebrations, the FISH Food Bank benefits, and for the residents of Hearthstone. A recent highlight was playing on stage with the Gothard Sisters at CWU. They are very excited to be performing on the Main Stage at the Fair this year.

John Dunnigan
I
f Jimmy Buffett, James Taylor and John Prine were joined together in some bizarre musical cloning experiment, the outcome would be John Dunnigan. This "offbeat" musician and entertainer took the backroads to Montana over three decades ago and never left (he's no fool). Today, he performs throughout Montana and the Northwest at bierstubes, corporate events, weddings, schools, fairs and festive brouhahas of every conceivable kind. His original, often hilarious songs make you think, laugh, sing along and raise your glass in a toast to life. In short, he can put a smile on your face.
