Who we are The Chamber provides a wide variety of services to the public, visitors and local businesses The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce is the largest business support and development organization in the County and one of the largest in Central Washington. With over 500 members representing every business sector, the Chamber and its committees oversee county-wide tourism promotion and economic development initiatives and a range of business support tools including publications, web services, seminars and even leadership development for a new generation.

Membership services department

The Membership Services Department works to assure the success of member businesses and organizations. Popular programs like Business After Hours, ribbon cuttings, First Friday Coffee Club, a luncheon speaker series, and an e-bulletin and print newsletter help members network and prosper. The department also oversees the Chamber website â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the primary portal for business information and inquiries in the county â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and helps members with marketing and promotions.

Development department The Economic Development Department works with new and existing businesses to build a stronger economy and a thriving business climate. This includes infrastructure improvements, attracting local investment, business advocacy, support for workforce development and counseling business start ups. The Tourism Department strengthens our local economies by promoting Kittitas County and its communities as travel and recreation destinations. The department administers three visitor centers and supports tourism-related events and programs developed by the Chamber and also other entities.

Visitor Information Centers

The Visitor Information Centers are open yearround with advice and information about events, trails, ticket sales, lodging, dining and other attractions. The Visitor Center also sells USFS maps and trailhead passes, and the Washington Discover Pass.

Ellensburg

Located in the geographic heart of Washington State and ideally situated at the intersection of Interstate 90 and Interstate 82, Ellensburg is known for its strong family environment, exceptional educational opportunities, Western heritage and a thriving business climate. Ellensburg’s rich history provides the backdrop to a progressive and outstanding quality of life. The city was named after town founder John A. Shoudy’s wife, Mary Ellen, in 1875. Originally spelled “Ellensburgh,” the “h” was later dropped. Central Washington University, located in Ellensburg, infuses the community with a rich variety of arts and performances as well as outstanding sports and a deep and specialized talent base. Ellensburg’s Historic Downtown today houses an eclectic mix of award-winning restaurants, pubs, shops, galleries and museums, along with a thriving Farmers Market.

Cle Elum

The town of Cle Elum has evolved since its incorporation in 1902 as a mining and logging town into a hub for Upper Kittitas County’s burgeoning recreation scene. The name Cle Elum derives from the Kittitas word for “swift water,” a reference to the currents of the Cle Elum river. 4 | 2018 Business Directory

Don’t miss the Art Walk on the first Friday of each month. Ellensburg is a recreational destination for hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding, snowmobiling and skiing. Each year Ellensburg hosts an array of events tailored to locals and visitors alike. Micro brews, cowboy poetry, film, quilts, jazz and dachshunds are all celebrated here, but perhaps best known is the Ellensburg Rodeo and Kittitas County Fair, held each Labor Day weekend.

Cle Elum offers outdoors activities such as hiking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing; antique and specialty shops; fine dining restaurants; and small town atmosphere. The spectacular Coal Mine Trail passes several historic mining sites as it makes its way along Crystal Creek and up to Roslyn.

Cle Elum’s diverse setting offers two noteworthy museums: Carpenter House and the Cle Elum Historical Telephone Museum. Cle Elum’s Pioneer Days, an annual Fourth of July celebration, is a “must do” for locals and visitors alike.

Roslyn

Roslyn, a historic mining town nestled in the Cascade Mountains, offers an eclectic mix of small businesses and restaurants that draw visitors and locals alike. The City of Roslyn is listed as a historical district on the National Historic Register. The discovery of coal in Roslyn in the late 1800s sparked a migration of immigrants from all over Europe to work in the mines. The Roslyn Museum, the Coal Miners Memorial and 25 historic cemeteries highlight the town’s diversity and heritage, as do the Croatian Picnic, an annual Heritage Dinner and Coal Miner Days. Roslyn boomed again when the awardwinning television show “Northern Exposure” came to town in 1990. Roslyn serves as a jumping off point for stellar outdoor recreation like camping, boating, hiking, mountain biking, snowmobiling and skiing.

Kittitas

Kittitas is a small lower-valley town that sprang to life alongside the Milwaukee Road – the nickname for the old Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. A post office, general store, church and agricultural warehouses were built around the small depot, putting Kittitas on the map. Kittitas today is centered in agriculture. Farmlands ring the township and the shrub-steppe sageland that rises to the east of town is perfect for snow-free

fall, winter and spring hikes. Community events include the Kruisin’ Kittitas Car Show and Burnouts the second Saturday of August and Christmas in Kittitas in December. The John Wayne Pioneer Trail, which follows the roadbed of the former Milwaukee Road, goes through Kittitas on its way to the border with Idaho. Today it is heavily used by hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers.

Fun & Recreation Kittitas County is a destination for outdoor enthusiasts Bordered by the rugged Cascade Mountains on one side and the mighty Columbia River on the other, Kittitas County’s diverse terrain is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise and gives new meaning to “go outside and play.” And since Kittitas County has four distinct seasons, it offers a dizzying variety of outdoor pursuits.

Golf

Kittitas County is home to four very different and challenging public golf courses including the Rope Rider and the Arnold Palmer-designed Prospector courses at Suncadia, Sun Country Golf Course near Cle Elum and the Ellensburg Golf and Country Club. All have their own distinct feel and offer outstanding views.

Hiking & Biking

While taking advantage of the county’s campsites, many chose to explore our extensive trail systems on foot or on bicycle. Kittitas County’s diverse terrain appeals to all experience levels. Water Sports

With its reliably dry and sunny summer days, Kittitas County is perfect for playing in the water. Whether you water ski, canoe, kayak, raft or paddle an inner tube, our waterways are here to oblige. The reservoirs of the Upper County and the Columbia River offer great water skiing while the Yakima River is popular for rafting.

Horseback riding

With its cowboy past, it’s no surprise that Kittitas County is prime horse country. Our varied terrain offers exciting and different opportunities for riders, from the easy-going John Wayne Pioneer Trail to extreme alpine excursions. The expansive Washington State Horse Park near Cle Elum offers trails, events and competition. Don’t worry if you don’t own a horse. We have a number of outfitters who can get you in the saddle.

Camping

Kittitas County has campgrounds ranging from rustic to refined, from desert to deep alpine forest. If you are the rough-andready type you will find primitive campsites stretching from the Alpine Wilderness to the sun-baked shores of the Columbia River. Those requiring more luxurious amenities will find campgrounds made to accommodate their recreational vehicles.

Economic indicators Various industries help create a thriving economy Kittitas County’s economy has a strong agricultural and government/education focus, but tourism, manufacturing and renewable energy also are important.

Agriculture

Hay production in Kittitas County is worth more than $50 million annually for growers, with timothy hay estimated at $45 million of that total. In a good crop year, about 90 percent of the timothy hay crop is exported overseas to Japan, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and other Pacific Rim counties. Several Ellensburg-area commercial hay companies buy hay in agreements with overseas customers, and local firms process the hay, transport it and export it through ports in Seattle and Tacoma. Valley growers also produce orchard grass, alfalfa, Sudan grass, sweet corn and potatoes.

Education & Government

Higher education and K-12 jobs are important to the local economy. Central Washington University employs about 1,400 faculty and staff, making it the county’s biggest employer. State and local government education represented 4,810 jobs in the county in 2016, according to the state’s Employment Security Department. That figure includes CWU student employment. 8 | 2018 Business Directory

The beef industry in Washington contributes significantly to the state’s economy and was ranked the sixth largest agriculture commodity in the state in 2014. Cattle ranches in Kittitas County are still operated today by second, third and even fourth-generation ranchers. Fruit orchards are another healthy cash crop in Kittitas County. As technology continues to produce new varieties of apples and pears, demand for these crops continues to grow. Orchards are primarily located on the southern rim of the Valley.

Construction & Manufacturing

Kittitas County has seen more construction jobs in recent years with residential construction, large building projects at Central Washington University and road projects. Manufacturing firms include Shoemaker Manufacturing and Zacklift International in Cle Elum, along with a number of agricultural-based businesses.

Tourism

Total visitor spending was estimated at $177 million in 2015. The Suncadia resort in Upper Kittitas County is a major contributor to the economy through its amenities for visitors and residential properties. The Chamber is involved by sponsoring a series of events and running tourism programs for the county and cities of Ellensburg and Cle Elum. More than 8,500 people stopped at Chamber visitor centers in Ellensburg and Cle Elum in 2017.

Renewable energy The Kittitas Valley is home to three major wind projects as well as several solar arrays, making it one of the Northwestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leaders in clean energy.

Puget Sound Energyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility, 16.5 miles east of Ellensburg, has a popular visitor facility with 360- degree view of the Kittitas Valley, Mount Rainier and the great Columbia Basin to the east. Other wind projects include the Vantage Wind Power Project and the Kittitas Valley Wind Power Project. The city of Ellensburg operates a communityowned solar electric facility at Rotary Park.

Kittitas Valley Healthcare offers inpatient and outpatient services, including surgical care, critical care, a birthing center and cardiopulmonary, laboratory and imaging. KVH has seven clinics, including family medicine in Ellensburg and Cle Elum, general surgery, internal medicine, orthopedics, women’s health, and an urgent care clinic in Cle Elum. KVH offers specialty services, including a geriatric nurse practitioner program, home health, hospice and workplace health, and has a community pharmacy. Academic community School districts and Central Washington University provide quality education

Ellensburg

School District

With a student body of 3,300, the Ellensburg School District is the largest district in Kittitas County. It has a strong tradition of providing a well-rounded education with one high school, one middle school and three elementary schools. Career and technology courses and alternative learning opportunities are offered along with outstanding music and choir programs and strong remediation programs. The district includes Ellensburg High School, Morgan Middle School, Valley View Elementary, Mount Stuart Elementary, Lincoln Elementary and Excel High School. The district also participates in the Running Start program with Central Washington University and offers Advanced Placement classes at the high school.

Kittitas

Thorp

The Kittitas School District enjoys a quiet pace of life while maintaining a variety of programs, classes, learning opportunities and curricular activities for its students. Because of its proximity to Central Washington University, students have access to the Running Start program.

The entire student body numbers around 130 and individualized attention is the norm. Since the district is so small, a close-knit family atmosphere in prevalent. The school was named a School of Distinction by the state in 2017.

School District

The Kittitas School District lies seven miles to the east of Ellensburg and is home to about 600 students grades K-12.

Damman

School District Rounding out school districts in Kittitas County is Damman Elementary School. This two-room schoolhouse harkens back to the days of old and stands just outside Ellensburg city limits. Today 40 students are split between two teachers in this kindergarten through fifth grade school. The school itself was built in 1890. It still retains its charm and rural roots while teaching and support staff strive to give students a personalized education. Students attend Ellensburg schools after leaving Damman. Thorp School District is immediately west of Ellensburg and has a combined junior/senior high school and elementary school all housed in one building.

Cle Elum/ Roslyn

The Cle Elum/Roslyn School District includes Cle Elum High School, Walter Strom Middle School and Cle Elum-Roslyn Elementary School and are overseen by Superintendent Gary Wargo. The district has 920 students. Students excel in smaller classroom sizes and are offered a variety of programs — including athletics — within their grade levels. Alternative education opportunities exist through the Swiftwater Learning Center. In 2017, Walter Strom Middle School was named a School of Distinction by the state.

Easton Easton School District is located west of Cle Elum near Snoqualmie Pass. The rural district is home to about 100 students grades kindergarten through 12, each of whom receives a high level of personal interaction with the district’s staff. Small class sizes and personalized attention along with the mountainous outdoor setting give students the opportunity to participate in a variety of curriculum. The school’s archery program is top-rated.

Washington University

Central Washington University is Ellensburg’s academic and cultural cornerstone. For 125 years the partnership has thrived for mutual growth and support. • CWU offers cultural enrichment through its performing arts, visual arts, concerts, sporting events and guest speaker programs. • The school has about 10,000 students, and graduates about 3,000 students a year. Central offers more than 135 majors. It has nationally and/or regionally recognized programs in music, geology, paramedicine, physics and education. The student-to-faculty ratio is 18-to-1. The average class size is 20 students. • The top Washington counties where students come from are King, Pierce, Snohomish, Yakima and Kittitas counties. Minority student enrollment is at 33 percent, and 6 percent of students are from outside the state or country.
