CWU vs HUMBOLDT STATE - SEPTEMBER 15, 2018
GAME PREVIEW
T
oday’s game is the second Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup for the Wildcats after defeating Western Oregon 50-17 in their GNAC opener. The Wildcats’ special teams kickstarted the scoring with a blocked field goal by Chaz McKenzie, who recovered his own block and took it 65 yards to the house. Defensively, Joshua Wikel led the Wildcats with a game-high 11 solo tackles. Tyren Sams and Isaiah Williams each recorded an interception. Tevin Gray recorded a pair of sacks, while the Wildcats totaled five on the day. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS Senior offensive lineman James Moore and senior defensive back Tyler Hasty were named to the D2Football.com Preseason All-America teams. Moore was selected to the first team, while Hasty earned second team honors.
DEEP BACKFIELD The Wildcats have, according to Shoemaker, one of the deepest backfields he has ever coached with Cedric Cooper, Michael Roots, Christian Cummings, Zach Floyd, and Jordan Tufaga. Last week, the Wildcats’ back field combined for three rushing touchdowns. It was the first time since 2016 the Wildcats had three different running backs make their way into the end zone. TRENCH BATTLES The Wildcats’ offensive line has allowed just three sacks in 2018. They held Western Oregon to just one sack in week two, after holding DI FCS No. 7 Eastern Washington to just two sacks in their opening game. Meanwhile on defense, the Wildcats have sacked opposing quarterbacks five times.
