2018 - Kittitas County Winter Sports ALL STARS

Greetings, Since I arrived here in Ellensburg three years ago, I have been astonished with how much success one county can have when it comes to high school athletics. There are so many great teams, great players and great coaches that I knew I had to find a way to recognize their efforts on the field and in the community. My first spring here I was asked to pick one male and one female athlete of the year, but as a newspaper, we decided to do more to showcase the talent and drive of those associated with athletics in our area.

The next year I added team of the year, coach of the year, game of the year and most inspirational moment because I wanted to share those memories with current and future generations. For the second year in a row, we are taking it one step further. Each of the three sports seasons will have winners for male athlete, female athlete, coach and team, among others. At the end of the year, one winner from each category will be honored at an awards presentation. Thank you for your readership and support, Ryan Kuhn

Winning awards is not anything new to Kittitas junior point guard Brock Ravet. This past season Ravet was not only named the Associated Press 2B Player of the Year, but was recognized by the Seattle Times and Tacoma News-Tribune in their allstate teams. He was also awarded the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Washington. On the court, he led the Coyotes to their second straight 2B State Championship defeating Saint George’s 65-50. The Gonzaga University verbal commit averaged 31.1 points per game this past season.

Congratulations to all of our Athletes and Coaches for another great season. Grebb, Johnson, Reed & Wachsmith, L.L.P. CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS

Kelly, who was a second team all-league foward, finished the season averaging nearly 13 points per game. Her last two games included a five rebound performance in Cle Elum-Roslyn’s 44-36 win over Bellevue Christian School and a 15-point performance in a loss to Zillah one week later. “I just wanted to play my hardest because I knew this could be my last game,” Kelly said.

In his first season as the Kittitas High School girls basketball coach, Joe Mohn took the Coyotes from no wins during the 2016-17 season to eight wins this past year. The Coyotes got their first win in their very first game when they came back to defeat 1A Warden High School 47-46 by speeding up the tempo. “My philosophy of basketball and gameplay makes everyone a threat, makes everyone responsible for individual skills,” Mohn said. “We do a ton of individual skill development and all the gameplay is team focused and individual focused.”

Members of the Kittitas Coyote boys basketball team celebrate after earning their second consecutive WIAA State championship with a 65-50 win over Saint George’s at the Spokane Arena, March 3.

Kittitas boys basketball wins its second consecutive 2B State Championship SPOKANE — Moments after the Kittitas High School boys basketball team defeated St. George’s School at the Spokane Arena March 3, members of the team celebrated by raising a No. 1 finger high toward the ceiling. By all respects, they could have raised two. The Coyotes’ 65-50 win over the 8

Dragons put them on top of the mountain again as they marked their second 2B State Championship in as many years. The back-to-back championships was the first time a 2B school accomplished that feat since Morton-White Pass won in the 2014-15 season. “This means everything,” said Kit-

titas junior Brock Ravet. “It was really cool to do it with all my friends and get a win again. It means the world to all of us.”

BACKCOURT TAKES THE REINS Kittitas’ backcourt of Ravet and freshman Mason Landdeck already showed Spokane spectators how

effective of a tandem they could be Friday night against Adna. That momentum carried over into Saturday afternoon when Ravet hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the game, followed by six-consecutive points by Landdeck. Both added one more field goal before the end of the quarter, com-

bining for 17 points and the Coyotes held onto a 19-10 lead. “They were playing the gap more, but once I kicked it out, Mason was hitting some good shots,” Ravet said.

EARNING HIS POINTS During the second quarter, Ravet’s offense did not come easy. He scored on a pair of jump shots, but he was constantly getting doubleteamed and the Dragons took advantage. St. George’s put the ball into Ben Adams’ hands as he hit back-to-back 3-pointers followed by a couple of free throws. Xander Wekman also came down the lane and made a shot, but Kittitas still held onto a slim lead. The Dragons crept as close as a single possession on three separate occasions by controlling the glass, but the Coyotes held their composure. Connor Brown came up with a putback followed by a bucket by Martin Arreola to take a 35-32 lead into halftime. “We knew if we were going to play soft we were going to get beaten,” said Kittitas head coach Tim Ravet. “We were getting our butts kicked on the boards and we came in and said, ‘It’s not about scoring. If you don’t own the boards then we will lose.’”

RAVET GOES DOWN In the opening minutes of the second half, Brock Ravet tried to get around a defender and hit the ground clutching his left ankle after he rolled it on the defender’s foot. With the Coyotes’ leader on the bench getting it taped up, Ravet’s close friend and teammate, Bailey Gibson, stepped in to fill the void. “I w a s a l i t t l e n e r v o u s because our best player went out, but then I knew I had to step up. If he is not in there, one of us has to be the shooter,” Gibson said. Gibson hit two 3-pointers

followed by another basket to score eight-consecutive points just in time for Brock Ravet to get back in the game. From there, the Coyotes went on a 7-2 run, all scored by Brock Ravet, to take an 50-39 lead. They were eight minutes away from another championship. “That actually was kind of a Godsend,” Tim Ravet said. “It gave (Brock) a breather and second, it made people step up. That is why there is no ‘I’ in team. It’s not about one guy.”

LAST PUSH Wi t h K i t t i t a s h o l d i n g a double-digit advantage, they seemed set for the rest of the game. Brock Ravet’s ankle appeared fine as he scored the next seven points, including a pull-up 3-pointer in the face of the defense. “I jumped, and I came down on my (my opponent’s) ankle. I’m a little sore, but it was nothing,” said Brock Ravet, who finished with 30 points and 17 rebounds. Landdeck added to the offense to bring the lead up to 59-44 and the Coyotes watched as the time started to tick off. Finally, with 12 seconds left, they brought the ball up the floor and their determined look morphed into pure bliss. After hoisting their title and taking home their piece of history, there is just only one thing for the seven returning varsity players accomplish. “The goal is to win it again,” Brock Ravet said.

THE LONE SENIOR Brown came in this season as the only senior on the starting roster. While his high school basketball career is over, he said the hard work and determination this team has taught him, will pay off in his future endeavors. “It doesn’t matter who you are, hard work pays off,” Brown said.
