W

hen we get to first performance of 2021 Bares and Broncs, I will give the biggest sigh of relief. This has been a wild ride. Thank you for being a part of it- that’s for sponsors, contestants, volunteers, spectators- everyone who has helped make this work. Imagine getting on a roller coaster. The last ride didn’t go so well, there was a big old wreck and things got shut down for a year. But this is a new year and you want to give it a try. You buckle in; pull the bar down tight. You’re nervous and excited as the cart starts moving forward. It’s going to be fun. There’s some little bumps but things are moving up and up and up. You get to the first big view and look ahead and see that the track still isn’t finished. Way out there, people are working away, and even arguing about the plan of where the track should go. Right before the big plunge, you get the shocking realization the end might be a wreck; again. Then over you go, hanging on and praying you’ll make it. That’s what this year has been like. I’m willing to count some blessing, I think we made it. There’s been some stressful days. Back in February, I got off a call with the governor’s office, back when they were saying there wasn’t a reopening plan, and they were waiting for data on some things and other things, but they heard my concerns and were listening. In the depressing days that followed, I didn’t shave for a day or two. Then I decided not to shave or cut my hair until we got to rodeo. I ended up looking like either a hobo from the wild hills or the CEO of Twitter, I could have been mistaken either way. Even after I got the approval for Bares and Broncs to move forward, I didn’t shave immediately, because I wasn’t sure I could trust anything good still being allowed to happen. Each measurement day, week, month was stressful. It might get taken away. People were walking past me in the street and not recognizing me. I was scared to shave because I wasn’t sure. It might be the moment of hubris that tempts the gods. Now, I have shaved and gotten all tidied up for show time, but I have to admit that mentally I’m still carrying that burden around. It will take a while to let go of that stress and allow myself to get back to living. I was almost giddy on the day when I got the draft-reopening plan for Washington State and giddy again when Kittitas County moved to Phase 3 Reopening that would allow ¼ capacity for Bares and Broncs. On the other hand, the day after I was warned our county would move out of Phase 3 back into Phase 2 (it didn’t end up happening- that was a good change), I got to my school building where I teach 8th grade English and History, and I couldn’t for the life of me remember the key code to open the door. I’ve put the code into the keypad thousands of times, but I couldn’t find that number in my memory; stress had short circuited my brain. The building secretary had to come open the door and let me in. I was back to being giddy when I saw the quantity and quality of cowboys coming to Bares and Broncs. And a final sense of relief that we are headed into a rodeo weekend. We made it. It’s going to happen. That’s what putting an event on during Covid-19 has been like. It’s been wild. Friday, May 14th, and Saturday, May 15th, will be good days. When the anthem gets played and the grand entry is leaving the arena and we’re just about to buck the first horse, I’ll admit I may get emotional. I’ll be extremely grateful to have the chance to do what I love to do, and thankful for so many people who help make it possible.

Thank you, Daniel

BARES & BRONCS - 2021

T

Cowboy Tribute

his is Cowboy. He is old. I am guessing he’s thirty four year old. He may be younger by a year or two, or maybe even older, but I’m close, and he’s old.

want to get petted on also. He was the calm teacher who set an example of kindness and wisdom.

Cowboy was given to us ten years ago by Stacy, one of the caregivers who helped my Grandparents as Grandma Charlot was losing ground to Alzheimers. Ten years ago, he was an old grey horse already. He had been diagnosed with a tumor, a common development for grey horses. Stacy asked if she could give us Cowboy for the kids to ride. My son John was eight and Quentin was three.

During the summers, Cowboy goes to pasture with the yearlings, two year olds, or three year olds. When the herd needs to get gathered, we go out and start scratching on Cowboy and soon the colts will all come gather around. Slip a halter around his neck, and you can lead Cowboy from field to field. The whole gather will follow along behind.

Cowboy was always a gentle soul. John rode him and Quentin rode him. He was the perfect old, gentle kid’s horse. You could catch him and trust him. As he got older, even being the kid’s horse was too much, but he still has value around the place. We keep him with the baby bucking horses when the rambunctious colts are weaned in the fall. He babysits through the winters right up by the house. Cowboy knew where the fences were, when the hay would get fed in the manger, and how to water in the creek. You could go out and scratch all over Cowboy and soon the babies would

Serving the Agricultural Community since 1946 with Integrity, Commitment and Experience

Now, Cowboy doesn’t get too active anymore. He hangs on to his winter hair a little bit too long. He creaks and pops a little bit when he gets to moving around. He needs a little bit of extra grain in the morning that he gets to eat all by himself, and he still looks too skinny. Cowboy is getting old, but he’s still loved and valuable. His spirit sets a tone for all the colts growing up on the ranch. Bucking horses need to watch, to think, to learn about people, and have no fear. Cowboy helps with all of that. Physically, he can’t do what he used to do, but he’s still important. This last year, I’ve lost my grandparents, Frank and Charlot Beard, and my mother-in-law, Cristi Eaton. Our family lost a lot of wisdom, learning, gentleness and kindness. Many families, like my family, have lost relatives and friends over this last year to old age, and cancer, and Covid. I feel like it’s important to notice the importance of what is missing from our lives. To take a minute to grieve. I wanted to bring out Cowboy and let you hear his story. If you are missing someone in your life- their wisdom, their comfort, their lessons, we’ve created a post that is pinned to the top the Facebook page for Bares and Broncs- feel free to add a picture or story of someone that helped you. If you’re missing them tonight, we’re sorry right alongside you.

CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS

We’ll finish this performance by showing you some of the colts that Cowboy has helped grow up. These are some of the Summit four year olds that are just getting started on their rodeo careers. They’ve grown up with Cowboy every year of their lives. They are bucking horses, but they are a kind, gentle group of horses because of him.
