greeting

From the ERHOF President

Dear Ellensburg Rodeo Fans: I am excited to present to you this 2021 program as we embrace the return of the Ellensburg Rodeo, honor past Rodeo participants and share recent Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame (ERHOF) accomplishments! I joined the ERHOF Board in 2017 with an appreciation for history and enthusiasm for the Ellensburg Rodeo. At that time, this Board had a big goal and the passion to achieve it! I have served on several committees and continue to learn what has been done over the years to preserve the artifacts and stories that make up the rich tradition of the Ellensburg Rodeo. Thanks to hard work and generous community support, the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame now has a permanent home. We have joined with the Clymer Museum and Western Art Association to make the Western Culture & Art Center (WCAC), 416 N. Pearl, a showcase for art, culture, and western history. ERHOF now leases the old Downtown Pharmacy space from the Clymer and stores its large and valuable collection and maintains an office headquarters in the WCAC’s spacious, restored upstairs. ERHOF exhibits continuously in the old pharmacy, with shows celebrating the founding of the rodeo, women in the Ellensburg Rodeo, the role of Indians, trick riders and clowns, ropers, All-Around Champions, specialty acts, the inducted Animals that reached national fame, and much more. Because of post-pandemic uncertainties, the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame’s usual CWU Thursday night induction banquet has been rescheduled and relocated. We are hosting the “Flags of Fame” dinner and auction Saturday, August 28, 5pm, at the Spirit Therapeutic Riding Center, 1051 Sorenson Road, and we are very grateful to the Spirit Center board and Evelyn Pederson. Supporters can learn ticket and auction info from the Ellensburg Daily Record and www.erhof.org, https://www.facebook.com/BootsOfFame, and www.instagram.com/ellensburgrodeohalloffame/ I know I speak for the entire Board when I thank each of our supporters for your continued and generous patronage. Without you we would not have been able to achieve what we have accomplished to date and with your help we will continue to preserve and display the storied history of the Ellensburg Rodeo. Sincerely yours,

Kent W. Lester

Museum News The Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame has joined with the Clymer Museum and Western Art Association to make the Western Culture & Art Center (WCAC), 416 N. Pearl, a showcase for art, culture, and western history. ERHOF leases the old Downtown Pharmacy space from the Clymer Museum and hosts year-round exhibits. In the WCAC’s historic restored upstairs, ERHOF stores its valuable collection of posters, jewelry, prize buckles, programs, costumes, saddles, movies, and hundreds of photographs and other historical items from the Ellensburg Rodeo donated by Inductees and local supporters. ERHOF also maintains an upstairs office headquarters. Thus, after 23 years, ERHOF has achieved its goal of founding an Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame, open to community members on a year-round basis.

In addition to WCAC exhibits, Hall of Fame artifacts are also on display at the Ellensburg Rodeo Board’s Western Village over rodeo weekend (at the north entrance of the rodeo grounds), the Windrow Hotel, and the Ellensburg Rodeo Board and Chamber of Commerce headquarters in the Driver Home on North Main Street. ERHOF pledges to continue to work with community members and our generous donors to share the history of the Ellensburg Rodeo through its 100th anniversary celebration (2023) and the decades to follow.

2021 erhof inductees Frederic Gregg “Fritz” Truran (1916-45) Frederic Gregg “Fritz” Truran (1916-45) was born and raised in Seeley, California. Although he was not a ranch-raised cowboy, Truran was drawn to the sport of rodeo and became a professional bulldogger and saddle bronc rider. In 1936, he joined the Cowboy Turtles Association, the precursor to today’s Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Truran--whose name is misspelled “Truan” in all of the Turtles’ official records-immediately became a rodeo standout. He won the coveted Madison Square Garden and World Saddle Bronc Riding Championships in 1939. The following year, he repeated his feat and added Pendleton’s prestigious Sam Jackson Trophy and a World AllAround Championship title to his rodeo resume.

As a top-tier competitor, Truran naturally traveled to the Pacific Northwest in August and September to compete in Ellensburg, Pendleton, Lewiston, Walla Walla, and Puyallup. In 1941, Ellensburg crowds cheered him on as he won both the Saddle Bronc competition and Ellensburg All-Around Championship. His future looked bright. Writing about Truran’s victory, Ellensburg Rodeo historian John Ludtka noted that in the late summer of 1941, “war clouds darkened” America’s skies. The 26 year-old Truran “was soon to volunteer for the U.S. Marines Corps” and leave professional rodeo to fight in World War II.

Truran served bravely in the Pacific Theater of World War II and survived the hard-fought Marine Corps invasions of Midway and Tarawa. In 1944, he was granted a one-month leave to produce an Oahu (Hawaii) rodeo for the benefit of wounded comrades. Soon thereafter, he redeployed in the Marine Corps’ brutal island-hopping campaign. Fritz Truran lost his life on Iwo Jima in 1945. The rodeo arena at the Marine Air Station at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, is named in his honor.  10

Dynamite (1916-1937) Dynamite was a famed bronc from Leo Moomaw’s (1894-1969) Colville reservation bucking horse string. Over Dynamite’s lengthy career (1919-1937), he performed at almost every Pacific Northwest rodeo large and small, including the prestigious rodeos of the time: Ellensburg, Lewiston, and Pendleton. He bucked off many of the top bronc riders: such as World Champion Howard Tegland at the Ellensburg Rodeo and World Champion Frank Woods, who was flown in during the barnstorming period of aviation for a match ride at the rodeo in Okanogan, Washington. Dynamite’s owner Leo Moomaw is a 2002 ERHOF inductee who, during a five-decade stock contracting career, achieved legendary status in the world of North American rodeo. In 1919, Leo Moomaw traded a team of work horses to Joe Hudspeth in order to obtain Dynamite. Moomaw recalled, “Joe owned him first but found out he could not ride him and no one else could either.” Over the next eighteen years, Dynamite travelled the Northwest by truck, rail car, and by trail from rodeo to rodeo. Dynamite was always a feature bucking horse and the highlight of the rodeo performance. Moomaw once stated, “I always consider Dynamite the best bucking horse I ever owned.” Because of his high level of performance and the length of his career, Dynamite is recognized as one of the extraordinary animal athletes worthy of induction into the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame. 
