Horse Pre-show returns to fairgrounds By ALEC DIETZ Around the Kittitas County Fairgrounds, excitement is beginning to build as Labor Day Weekend approaches. But before the big Fair, the county’s youth will open up festivities at the fairgrounds with the Junior Horse Fair, set to take place August 19-22. Before any of the real deal, however, the kids took to Bloom Pavilion and the rodeo arena to a big walkthrough of what to expect at the fair at their annual pre-show, two years after their last pre-show in 2019. With COVID-19 restrictions beginning to ease up, allowing for events like 4-H to take place, participants and leaders of local 4-H clubs are excited for the challenge after not being able to work with their kids for most of the last year. “It’s been great, just to be able to this again has been so nice and it’s so great for the kids, and the horses and the parents. It’s been really positive,” Trailblazers leader Gregg Schlanger said. On July 23, the 4-H horse clubs began to put the finishing touches on

their fair preparations, simulating the same events and activities they would be participating in at the Youth Fair this August. Kids of all ages competed in Showmanship, Driving, Trail, Games, and more events over the entire weekend. Though Schlanger was just one of a handful of club leaders there, he said that he missed the positive environment that these competitions provided. “It’s really like one big family, we all know each other, we all help,” he said. “Everyone is really supportive. That’s been great.” One of the biggest challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic presented to 4-H clubs, especially with the horse fair, is the constant work needed to care for and train the animals. “4-H horse kids, they’re working on their projects year-round. It doesn’t just end,” Schlanger said. “You have to participate to learn.” Just getting back from restrictions continued on page 6

continued from page 5 that prevented them from meeting up in person, Schlanger said there were kids who were just getting their feet under them in 2019 when the pandemic halted the fair last year. But with the restrictions eased, and events set to go on as planned, th July 23-35 weekend at the fairgrounds was just another step toward normalcy. “With things opening up it’s been fantastic,” Schlanger said. “We’ve been able to actually work and go through some of the things we do at shows and practice them. “It’s coming up fast. We’re working towards that. Pre-show is the closest thing to the real thing.”

After missing a year due to COVID-19 restrictions, this horse and rider competed in the 4-H Horse Pre-show in July at the Kittitas County Fairgrounds.

WSU Extension This summer’s extreme heat wave emphasized the need for commercial producers and youth with animal to prepare now for heat and dangerous conditions. Here are a few general suggestions to keep your animals safe, but also keep in mind each of the various species of domesticated animals with have specific needs. • Avoid stressful handling of livestock and if necessary only do so in the early morning hoursor late in the evening. • If animals are in a barn or shed, ensure that they have proper ventilation and air circulation. • For animals outside, provide shade if possible. • Provide a continuous supply of cool, clean water.Water is an important factor in allowing animals’ bodies to cool down and stay cool. Sufficient water is particularly important for animals that are lactating or pregnant to ensure health of the nursing young and health of offspring at birth. Watch for signs of dehydration (e.g.lethargy, drying of the mucous membranes and eyes, or eyes that appear sunken and dull). Clean water is also important: Note that excessive heat and stagnant water can promote blue-green algae growth which has shown to be toxic to livestock, wildlife, and humans.

Remember that during times of heat stress, it may be necessary to reduce the energy intake (e.g. grains and concentrates) and increase fiber in the diets of animals such as 4-H steers and lambs to help mitigate heat stress. In addition, endophyte infected forages (e.g. fescue or other forages or crop residues containing endophyte) should be avoided as they may exacerbate heat stress in cattle. Heat stress can also be made worse by high humidity. Animals find it more difficult to cool during times of high humidity. In general, the Inland Northwest does not experience high humidity during the summer. However, west of the Cascade Range the marine environment is more prone to higher humidity. In addition, areas to the east of the Cascade Range with vast areas of irrigated farmland are an exception and can experience higher humidity. During and following heat stress, watch for signs of respiratory disease and digestive disorders in livestock. Wide temperature swings between day and night (say 40 degrees or more) can predispose livestock to infection. Finally, high temperatures with low humidity increase the likelihood of wildfires across our region. Have an emergency plan in place to guide you in times of high temperatures and also for disaster preparednesssuch as wildfires. If you need assistance navigating this heat wave please contact your WSU Extension Specialists, County Extension Educators, Extension veterinarians, or your local veterinarian.
