From the President

W

elcome to the 134th Kittitas County Fair! First organized in 1885 by local farmers and ranchers, the annual county fair has always showcased its agricultural roots and celebrated its western heritage that our community has embraced for hundreds of years. We hope you come on out and see a piece of our agricultural heritage and history, check out the exhibits including the 4-H and FFA projects that many of our youth have worked hard on all year, visit our turn-ofthe-century town, pan for gold, get reacquainted with your neighbors and friends, and enjoy a safe, family friendly environment filled with carnival rides,

entertainment and fair food. Don’t forget to grab your cowboy hat and a ticket to the worldrenowned Ellensburg Rodeo, one of the top 10 rodeos in the country. Our fair board and staff have worked hard to make this year’s fair bigger, better and more enjoyable than ever before. A shout out to all our fair volunteers and sponsors who make this event a reality with their continued support. The event would not be what it is today without their efforts and dedication. Thank you for making this community celebration the event of the year! Heather Harrell, President Kittitas County Fair Board

From the Rodeo H

ello Rodeo fans and welcome to the 2019 World Famous Ellensburg Rodeo. We have an action packed six days of excitement for you. It all starts Wednesday with Rodeo Slack. Thursday night is our Rockin the Arena concert featuring Russell Dickerson, Friday evening is the start of our performances, A parade Saturday morning, Rodeo performance Saturday afternoon, Extreme Bulls World Finals Saturday night, a Rodeo performance on Sunday, the Sunday night Posse show and our Championship Monday to finish it all off. I hope you can fit it all in. Saturday night is the always sold out Xtreme Bulls World Finals. Forty of the world’s top bull riders will converge on the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena to take their shot at a $100,000 purse. This is the PRCA’s 2019 Xtreme Bulls Tour and it all ends in Ellensburg. Be sure to get your tickets early and see who is crowned the 2019 PRCA Xtreme

Bulls Tour Champion. On our Championship Monday you will most likely see Cowboys and Cowgirls competing in the arena who are headed to the NFR in Las Vegas. Winning Ellensburg often is what it takes to give these contestants the prize money they need to propel them to the National Finals Rodeo. During all that excitement be sure to stop by the World Famous “Behind the Chutes” beer garden if you are over 21 for a cold beer and some of the best country music and dancing in the state. At the heart of our rodeo, are the people who make it possible. Countless individuals and supporting groups put in hundreds of hours just to see the show go on every year. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank all those who make our Rodeo the great show that it always is. Thank you for spending your Labor Day weekend in Ellensburg and enjoy the Rodeo and Kittitas County Fair.

A line forms as fairgoers gather for a lunch, provided by Super 1 Foods, on opening day at the Kittitas County Fair.

he art of rodeo performance can be instilled at a young age at the peewee rodeo on all five days of the fair. Kids up to 6 years old will be dressed up the traditional vests and boots and given eight seconds to perform just like in a real rodeo. Signups are at the fair grounds on the day of the event. There is only room for the first 20 to sign up each day, so make sure you don’t miss out on the opportunity to make some rodeo memories.

Junior Livestock Auction make sure that you do all of the qualifying things for 4-H and meet all of the requirements.” Regardless of the difficulty, Rivera said that she gets a lot of support from her friends, family, and fellow 4-Hers that make the experience worthwhile and fulfilling. “The teamwork and how involved kids are makes me happy,” Rivera said. “At school, nobody’s really involved in much. When you come to 4-H, everybody’s like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’ll help you. I’ll do this for you.’” If there’s something that Kittitas County’s 4-H group seems to do exceptionally well at, it’s community involvement and support. According to Pettit, between support from families, sponsorships with local businesses, and community participation, the Kittitas County 4-H livestock sale is one of the highest-grossing in the state. That involvement is demonstrated before any of the 4-H kids’ animals are shown and sold. At the beginning of every fair’s livestock sale, an animal donated by someone from the community is auctioned off as the endowment animal. The funds from this sale go directly into a trust fund which builds interest to pay for things like scholarships, sending kids

According to Livestock Committee chairman and vice president of the endowment trust fund Mark Crowley, the fund will eventually be used to fund the entire county 4-H program. Crowley said that the auctioneers who come to take part in the livestock sale have told him that the Kittitas County sale is one of, if not the best sale in the state. However, he also said that this county’s 4-H program wasn’t always as prosperous. “I have been here when kids actually lost money on the sale,” Crowley said. “There was a huge turnaround in ’94, ’95 from things not being so good to what we have now. More community members got involved and went out and sought more support from

other businesses. We had some business owners that had kids in 4-H and they got involved and got other businesses to be involved.” Mark Crowley’s 15-year-old son Wyatt Crowley is an active member of 4-H and has sold pigs at the livestock sale. He says firsthand that the amount of support this community has a profound impact of him and the other kids in 4-H, and is part of what keeps him in the program. “It’s just nice to know how much of your community will come out for you,” Crowley said. “It really is, around here, just the community family. All the businesses, all the people that don’t normally come out, they’ll come out and help support the kids to get them the future that they want.”

ince as far back as November 2018, 4-H kids have been working hard to raise, train, and prepare a variety of different livestock animals to be shown and sold at the 2019 Kittitas County Fair on Aug. 30 for the annual 4-H livestock sale. 4-Hers choose between beef, goats, swine, and sheep, and according to the livestock sale’s chairperson Brandon Pettit, the process teaches them valuable skills. “It teaches them responsibility,” Pettit said. “They have to make sure their animals are fed and given water every day and taken care of. It teaches them financial skills, basically how to run a business, they’re going to be able to pay for their animals up front.” Every animal that kids can choose to raise and show comes with their own difficulties. Karina Rivera, 15, raises goats, which are given to her in April. Since then she takes them on frequent walks to improve their muscle composition and spend time getting them familiarized with her. “It’s fun. It’s challenging since they’re really stubborn, they don’t like people at all,” Rivera said. “And so, you have to make sure that you can build up the trust and relationship with them. Then also you have to

Frontier Village

I

t’s a spot where fairgoers can buy candy, pan for gold, and peek inside a pioneer cabin. Frontier Village, which offers a look at life during the early 20th century springs to life once a year during the Kittitas County Fair. The village is made up of historic cabins and buildings moved from throughout the county. Visitors can buy penny candy and $1 pickles at Hunt’s General Store. Over at the Rocky Saddle Saloon, the saloon keeper sells root beer and other types of soda for $1.50 per bottle. Youngsters can also pan for gold at the Cooke Miners Supply Company Cabin.

School House No. 11, constructed in 1910, remains one of Kittitas Valley’s oldest standing school houses. Its history has enriched the lives of many fairgoers throughout the years and educational programs are offered inside. Another educational venture is the Robbins cabin, which offers a historic look into what life was like back in the day. Seventeen children were raised in the three-bedroom cabin that only had dirt floors. Visitors can walk through the family’s kitchen and bedrooms and get a feel for what life was like in the 20th century.

Adam the Great Adam will undoubtedly mystify and amaze audience members of all ages. According to Drew Carney, morning show news anchor for KGW-TV in Portland where Adam is based: “I’ve known Adam and have witnessed his magic for the past 10-plus years. He takes his craft very seriously, but doesn’t take himself seriously at all. He’s as good an entertainer as he is a magician.”

eturning to the Kittitas County Fair is two-time championship juggling medalist Jerimiah Johnston, who has been perfecting the art of juggling since he was 12 years old. Johnston entered college in 2005 at Humboldt State University where he discovered the college’s circus club. There he would be introduced to the stage, fire dancing, and further juggling expertise. He and his brother Jesse were a part of a four-person juggling team, called “The Poetic Motion Machine,” with whom he would win his first bronze medal at the 2009 International Jugglers’ Association’s annual competition. This

is around the time when, according to him, he realized that he “was to become a professional entertainer and instructor, sharing the world and joy of the juggling arts with the world.” While still in college, he formed a juggling trio with two of his friends called “Mountain Motion,” and won his second bronze medal in the IJA competition. From there he began his solo career, creating “The Throw Zone.” With stunts, laughs, and amazing displays of balance and dexterity, he will be bringing The Throw Zone from his home base of the Bay Area to Ellensburg once more to captivate audiences throughout the weekend.

When using his abilities for entertainment, Mabry’s goal is to leave a lasting impression. According to him on his website: “I don’t want to just do hypnosis, I want to blow minds. Let’s be real, it’s not about making people believe. It’s about making everyone from the gullible to the hardcore skeptics question everything they know about life. I honestly shoot for every show in every moment to create a lasting memory.”

oaring back into Ellensburg on their Flying Umbrella Ship, Mango and Dango are world-renowned theatrical circus performers, partner acrobats, jugglers, aerialists, stilt walkers, physical comedians & chair stackers. As artists and directors, they find their inspiration traveling the globe, exchanging smiles and ideas with people of all walks of life. In the pursuit of this, they have performed their one-of-a-kind theatrical circus shows in Central/South America, Europe, southeast/ central Asia, the Middle East, and throughout the United

States. It all started in 2004 with the first performance Mango and Dango created together, a modern dance duet which they found didn’t suit them. However, knowing they simply had to be entertainers, they found and were captivated by the circus. They traveled the streets of San Diego, performing their first circus show at a local farmers market. Only a month later they were on their way to Central America, and only a year later they had toured Western Europe. At the Kittitas County Fair, you can be sure to catch

According to Dunnigan, he grew up in Northern California and received an inspiration shared by many young musical careers: seeing The Beatles on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Since then, he’s been lucky enough to play music for a living for almost his entire life, performing with Bonnie Raitt, Asleep at the Wheel, Norton

n honor of competitive spirit and Ellensburg’s long history as an agricultural town, hay bucking will be brought back in the form of the Hay Bucking Contest. Competing winner-takes-all for $1,000, two pairs at a time will face off unloading 18 bales of hay, three stacks high, off a trailer and

then loading them back again as quickly as they can. The first to do so will move on up the bracket for the chance to win. Hay bucks used to do this all day for much less money, but are fading away due to the use of machinery in farming. Keep the tradition alive and see if you have what it takes to win!

“M

After high school, Leigh says that she wasn’t ready to share her personal passion for music, but during college she learned how to lead worship at her church and developed her musical skills by playing gospel music. After playing her first live show in 2014, she began forming her own band and writing songs and has since opened for a number of national acts since then including Chris Janson, Kenny Chesney, Craig Campbell, Josh Gracin, and more. Leigh and her band also won the 2015 Battle of the Bands, played at the Oregon Jamboree, released

their first album and began touring in Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Montana, and Nevada. “I wake up every day feeling incredibly blessed that I get to make music and share it with the world,” Leigh said. She is brought to Ellensburg as one stop on her “Irresistable Summer Tour” following the release of her new songs “Irresistible” and “Storm in May.” She will be performing in the afternoons of the fair in the Corral.

n Thanksgiving Day 2007, four sisters, Kendra, LaRae, Alisa and Meghan, left their new home in Palmer, Alaska with their family to pursue their musical dreams. They had always had lives full of music, but Christmas 2006 was when it turned from a hobby to a potential life when all four got the instruments that they had long desired, and the band suddenly formed. Over the following year they performed at coffee shops and fairs, trading their performances for

food. According to Kendra: “Fall of 2007 was the most freeing thing I have ever experienced.” They had higher aspirations however, so they sold everything they owned and headed to the Appalachians to study the roots of American music. Their study of mountain music means that all of their performances have an American Folk influence, but the members of the band refuse to concretely define what genre they play.
