While tasting wine at the Clymer Museum of Art, you may also want to bid on the original painting by Michael Swofford, the 2018 Jazz in the Valley Artist. The auction will end on Sunday, July 29th at 2p.m. Jazz in the Valley is a festival that is organized and promoted by an all-volunteer board of directors and is supported by more than 190 community volunteers and contributions from JIV fans. Poster artwork depicts spirit of jazz This year’s Jazz in the Valley poster is based on original artwork by Michael Swofford, a Washingtonian who attended Central Washington University in the 1970s. Swofford moved to Los Angeles where he worked for the Walt Disney Company as an animator on “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin” and more. For the 2018 Jazz in the Valley poster, Swofford collaborated with local artist Lynne McCowin, a previous JIV poster artist. The poster depicts the spirit of jazz music over historic downtown Ellensburg. The portrayal of the town is based on a photograph taken shortly after the turn of the 20th century.

The original artwork will be the focus of a Jazz in the Valley Silent Auction fundraiser. It will be on display at the Clymer Museum during the month of July. Bids will be accepted throughout July with the auction ending at 2 p.m. July 29.

Alma y Azúcar Alma y Azúcar brings you an exquisite and passionate selection of Latin styles and flavors. From the bouncy feel of ‘Perfidia’ and ‘Quizas’ to the passionate tango version of ‘Besame Mucho’, the sultry bossa nova ‘Waters of March’ and the salsa sound of ‘Bemba Colorá’ or ‘Oye Como Va’, these tunes have captured hearts and entertained internationally for decades. One of the most striking things about Alma Villegas is her ability to honor the rich traditions of the various Latin genres that she performs, without being singularly defined by them. With her band Alma y Azúcar, Alma masterfully integrates beloved Latin rhythmic styles including Cha Cha, Bossa Nova, Tango, Son, Rumba, Salsa, Samba and more with more contemporary influences, resulting in what she calls Latin music for everyone. Born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, Alma grew up with a range of musical influences that included ‘70s disco, American show tunes, pop, Mariachi and traditional Boleros, which her mother, also a vocalist, would sometimes sing. Alma has been singing professionally since 2001, when she joined the popular Seattle salsa band Cambalache. Soon thereafter, she was hired as one of three lead vocalists with the 12-piece Cuban ensemble Yerba Buena. While working with Yerba Buena, Alma began venturing out with her own groups, playing in wine bars, nightspots and other venues. Stepping up as a bandleader allowed Alma the opportunity to explore a broader palette of expression, while opening her up to a bigger and more diverse audience. Thus, Alma y Azucar was born. With Alma at the front, the band also features esteemed Seattle musicians Fred Hoadley (piano, tres, backup vocals), Steve Okimoto (bass), Ricardo Guity (percussion, backup vocals), Lance Lu on Shekere and Steve Mostovoy (trumpet, backup vocals).

King Kom Beaux King Kom Beaux’s sound is a musical narrative of the birthplace of the blues, the American Southland. These seasoned pros produce music rich with the saucy, spicy harmonic ingredients that originated and defined the Blues. You’ll hear Southern Blues sounds including Delta Blues, Cajun Accordion, Second Line and Afro Funk Drum Beats and Swampy Bayou Rhythms. Louisiana native Doug Kearney’s guitar playing, singing and writing style contains the DNA of Southern Blues with lightning fast to melodic picking, emotion stirring chording and soaring slide guitar riffs heard from blues greats like “Honey Boy” Edwards and Sonny Landreth.

Rounding out their infectious sound is the multi- talented Steve Vincent on keyboards, accordion and vocals.

The Professors features three Central Washington University professors from Ellensburg — Chris Bruya, who teaches in the Music Department, Greg Lyman who teaches industrial tech, and Clem Ehoff who teaches accounting. In the group, Bruya plays flugelhorn and trumpet, Lyman plays bass and Ehoff plays piano. The group has been together for roughly half a year, and Jazz will perform at the Iron Horse Brewery before Jazz in the ValWhen: 8:30-11:30 p.m. ley, Bruya said. They’ve also Friday, July 27 performed at Gard Vintners Where: Gard Vintners and J-Bell Winery. “We play a variety of jazz standards and lots of originals by Clem, which are Latin gems, very fun to play,” he said. He said that in the future, the group might add a hand percussion player or drummer. “It’s different to hear a small group without drums. And Clem’s tunes are great,” Bruya said.

Darren Motamedy

Mel Peterson Collective Melany Peterson grew up listening to Roberta Flack, Dionne Warrick, Jerry Butler, Isaac Hayes, Aretha Franklin and many other Gospel, Jazz and R&B artists who shaped her musical style. Now, she is one part of the Cooke Canyon Duo which performs a fusion of contemporary-pop, jazz standards and rhythm and blues classics. Melany’s interest in singing took flight at the age of 12 singing in her hometown church in

Charleston, SC. There she would often be caught alone playing the piano and singing some of her favorite tunes by Roberta Flack. Melany often reflects back to her favorite artist, Roberta Flack to whom she owes a lot of her sultry vocals and singing style.
