uly in Ellensburg, Washington, brings lots of sunshine, blue skies AND Jazz in the Valley! The annual festival welcomes visitors and fans to share and enjoy the good times and great music in the 10 intimate venues throughout Historic Downtown Ellensburg.

The 18th Jazz in the Valley Festival dates are Friday July 24 through Sunday, July 26. While the festival has always been a weekend packed with great music and top notch performers from around the country, this year, we are pleased to showcase bands that include talented musicians from Ellensburg and Next Generation jazz students from Central Washington University, in particular, CWU Jazz Band 1, winner of the Big Band Award at the Next Generation Monterey Jazz Festival.

In addition to enjoying the music, there are many activities occurring in downtown on Saturday. The Farmers Market will offer a variety of produce and crafts, wine tastings at the Clymer Museum and Gallery One, and many shops to browse.

A highlight of Jazz in the Valley is

the silent auction for this year’s poster artwork. This year’s original piece aptly titled, “Jazz Man” was created by artist, Cheryl Waale. The original artwork will be on display at Gallery One during the month of July with the silent auction ending on Sunday, July 26th at 2 p.m.

Jazz in the Valley is organized and promoted by an all-volunteer communitybased board of directors.

In addition, more than 175 Festival volunteers bring the Festival to life by selling tickets, helping with the set-up and take-down, and staffing venues. In short, Jazz in the Valley is truly a community event made possible by our valuable volunteers and gracious sponsors who help make the magic happen!

Local bands gear up to perform

C

entral Washington University’s music program has a tradition of excellence producing professional musicians and music teachers and that will be on full display at this year’s Jazz in the Valley. Chris Bruya, jazz studies director at Central, will be directing two bands and his son, Bob Bruya will be debuting with his new jazz trio.

The Ellensburg Big Band, which boasts many locals on its roster, also will perform.

CWU jazz bands CWU Jazz Band 1, named the best college big band at the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey, Calif., in March will bring its award-winning sound at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 26 at the Rotary Pavilion Main Stage to close out the festival.

The band competed with big name schools, such as the University of Southern California, and will return in September to perform at the longest continuously running Monterey jazz festival.

Director Chris Bruya is also excited to have the CWU 2005 European Reunion Jazz Band play at Jazz in the Valley.

“It’s going to be a thrill to have my 2005 band back for a reunion gig,” he said.

The reunion band performed at festivals in Switzerland and the Netherlands in 2005 and put Central on the international jazz map. After a decade apart, the band will come together on Saturday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m. on the Main Stage, Rotary Pavilion.

Bob Bruya Trio Bob Bruya, Chris’ son, will play with the Bob Bruya Trio, a Next Generation jazz band at Rodeo City BBQ on Friday, July 24 from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Music at the University of Miami where he plays the bass.

He is a member of the school’s prestigious Stamps Jazz Quintet.

His senior year at EHS, he was selected for the Grammy Awards Jazz Session Big Band as their bassist.

“It is a great gift,” Chris said about his son performing at the same festival. “When he was young I used to have him sit backstage to watch many of the great performers at Jazz in the Valley and now he is one of them,” he said.

The other students in the trio, both from the Frost School of Music, are Sam Hart and Marcelo Bourque Perez.

Hart (saxophone) and Perez (drums) are both Stamps Distinguished Ensemble Scholars and members of the Stamps Jazz Quintet. Hart toured the northeast and Canada with The Next Generation Jazz Orchestra in

2013. Perez has 12 soloist awards under his belt and has received the 2011 Berkeley Mayoral Award for his achievements in performing arts.

Ellensburg Big Band Musicians representing the Ellensburg community, from college students to music educators and local professionals who love to make music, make up the 19-member Ellensburg Big Band.

In the tradition of dance bands from the ‘40s and ‘50s, the classic swing jazz band plays a variety of jazz standards and modern styles and features favorites from the Glen Miller and Count Basie Bands. The band has made itself known throughout the community, playing at dances and concerts at CWU, Suncadia, the Kittitas County Fair. They’ve even sold out a 1000-seat concert hall in Sanda City, Japan.

Painting fearlessly

Poster artist excited to be back in the valley

“T

he Jazz Man” wasn’t finished until artist Cheryl Waale threw paint all over it.

“I painted that jazz saxophonist in different colors and they never quite felt right to me,” the 66-year-old Seattle painter said. “It just needed more life to it than what the earlier one had.”

Now the artwork is plastered all over the city. It was the winner of this year’s Jazz in the Valley poster contest.

Waale says she was honored to be chosen and it’s fun to see her image all over town.

Waale has an exhibit of her equine pieces up at Gallery One in downtown Ellensburg this month.

Three years ago, she had an exhibit upstairs during the month of July.

“I’m excited to be back here,” Waale said earlier this month. “I love this gallery and it’s fun to be part of the town here during that event.”

Learning to make mistakes Hailing from the California Bay area, Waale has been in Washington since 1979 and has successfully shifted from being a corporate trainer to a full-time artist with two studios.

“I say I went from being a confident, corporate gal to being a neurotic artist, and I’m having more fun,” she said.

One of those studios is in Sedona, Ariz., where she spends her winters with her husband. In the summertime, she escapes the heat and ventures up to Washington.

She teaches classes in Shoreline and Sedona, where she encourages students to paint outside the lines.

“If you come to my class, you paint with the largest brush possible,” she said. “You’re not picking up a tiny little pointed brush and painting every leaf on a tree.”

In her experience, the most difficult thing she watches adults do is learn how to loosen up. She says that children don’t have a problem making a mess but adults are timid about it.

“Some of my best works are as a result of what you might call a boo-boo or a mistake,” she said.

People take her classes to learn how to paint loosely and fearlessly, she says. Her class sizes usually have fewer than eight people so she can give each student a lot of attention.

Teaching always came naturally to her, which is why she was a corporate trainer for many years, traveling the world to teach leadership development and business skills.

“It’s so much fun to watch people learn to play again,” she said about her studio classes, adding that she hopes her work reflects the fun she has while she’s painting.

“You can look at each piece and say she was

Waale says it’s important to be true to the technical aspects of good art, but she always tries to do something “a little different to push the envelope with color and design.”

The artistic process She typically works on several paintings at once, working fast with quick-drying acrylic paint, sometimes working with a lot of layers. She’ll paint on one piece while the other one dries, taking time to think over her work.

During her painting process, Waale likes to crank out tunes on her many Pandora stations. Lately, she’s been painting to Sam Smith, but she paints to everything from hip-hop to classical.

Waale doesn’t own a farm, although she says she would love to, but she does volunteer at an equine therapy ranch, which inspired the series. She feeds and grooms the horses and is a side walker for disabled clients who have sessions.

The artist says that the only way to get good at painting is “brush mileage.”

“Don’t think it to death. You gotta get in there,” she said.

Alma Villegas y Azucar

H

ailing from Tijuana, Mexico, Alma Villegas began her professional singing career with salsa bands popular in Seattle. She decided to create her own band that offered tastes of Latin music with a pinch of contemporary. Her band, Alma y Azucar, produces music that she calls Latin music for everyone, beautifully integrating Latin rhythmic styles such as tango, rumba, and salsa with more contemporary influences.

Samuel Alamillo (percussion), Ricardo Guity (percussion and back-up vocals), Steve Okimoto (bass), Fred Hoadley (keyboard and tres), Lance Lu (percussion) and Steve Motsovoy (trumpet) all masterfully add to the sweet sound of the band.

CWU Jazz Band 1 C

WU Jazz Band 1, named the best college big band at the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey, Calif., in March will bring its award-winning sound to Jazz in the Valley on Sunday, July 26.

Central Washington University’s music program, including the jazz program, has a tradition of excellence producing professional musicians and music teachers, but even within that context this band’s makeup had something special, Director Chris Bruya said.

“There are a lot of factors that go into what makes a band,” Bruya told the Daily Record this spring.

“The No. 1 factor is a lot of these guys came up through the system together. Our lead trumpet started

These students know what they need to do to get better.”

The second factor is this past summer Jazz Band 1 had the experience of recording a CD with Barney McClure, Bruya said.

“They got together to learn how to make music,” Bruya said.

The third factor may be the X factor, something far less technique-oriented.

“They all get along together,”

Bruya said. “That may be the most important factor.”

The win at Monterey comes with an invitation to play at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September.

Dmitri Matheny Group

D

mitri Matheny has been celebrated for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique. First introduced to jazz audiences in the 1990s as the protégé of Art Farmer, Matheny has matured into a leading figure on the international jazz scene and one of the most prolific musicians of his generation.

Matheny leads the Dmitri Matheny Group, an all-star ensemble featuring some of the most accomplished jazz artists in the western states.

Matheny has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He has traveled to 19 countries and has performed with many Motown and popular music acts including the Temptations, Martha Reeves, Fabian, the Four Tops and the O’Jays. Matheny’s discography lists over 60 compact discs on which he appears as a composer, arranger, producer, annotator or flugelhorn soloist.

Matheny has held teaching faculty and management positions with the Jazzschool, Boston Center for the Arts, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Chabot Space and Science Center, Monarch Records and the Stanford Jazz Workshop.

Brent Edstrom Trio

Brent Edstrom Trio | Jazz

or over a decade, the Brent Edstrom Trio has been delighting audiences with the subtle yet hard-swinging style. Listeners are often transfixed as soon as the first note plays, with noted conductor and jazz historian Gunther Schuller describing the trio as “a gift to the community” for their dynamic range and spontaneous playing style.

Drawing on a deep understanding of jazz history and tradition, the members of the trio are top-call musicians.

Brent Edstrom (Jazz pianist), performs frequently as a solo pianist and is also a composer and arranger.

With many years of music industry experience, he often plays with his trio, jazz bands and symphony orchestras.

Eugene Jablonsky (bass), displays his quick wit and humor on stage, providing the vibrant tone and pulse that drives the Brent Edstrom Trio. He has performed with many orchestras and is a gifted educator.

Rick Westrick (percussion), is in demand as a teacher and player, with his passion for jazz leading him to frequently work with local jazz trios and quartets. He’s performed with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra for more than 25 years.

Dan Kramlich Grunge Trio A s one of the most sought after performers, educators and adjudicators in Seattle, pianist Dan Kramlich has successfully established himself in the jazz community. Jazz legends Fred Hersch and Billy Hart worked with Dan at Western Michigan University and helped craft his style.

Currently performing with his own group, the Dan Kramlich Grunge Trio, Dan can also be heard on many recordings by local musicians. He’s worked with Steve Tresler, Vern Sielert Dektek and Bernie Jacobs.

Pacific Lutheran University and Seattle Pacific University share him as their jazz piano instructor and Dan also teaches privately at Creative Music Adventures in Seattle. Dan also attended CWU’s Jazz Studies Camp as a faculty member this summer.

Eugenie Jones Jazz Quartet

E

ugenie Jones doesn’t dream in color, she dreams in jazz. The newcomer burst on the Seattle jazz scene with her hip, original jazz feel. She holds the Earshot Jazz NW Recording of the Year with her self-penned tunes that bear authenticity. With an MBA and two sons, Eugenie might be new to the jazz scene, but she is not new to life itself. Many of her self-penned songs bear the signs of her personal authenticity.

Little Bill and the Blue Notes

F

ormed in 1957, the Blue Notes was the first rock ‘n’ roll band in Tacoma. Members Bill Engelhart, Frank Dutra, Buck Ormsbey and Lassie Aanes would meet after school in Engelhart’s dad’s garage to practice.

Before long, they were drawing crowds on the street outside.

To date the Blue Notes are the only Northwest band from that era with an original member still performing on a consistent basis today. Since 1988 the Blue Notes have released 11 CDs and Engelhart has won all the awards from the Washington Blues Society

A

product of the Central Washington University jazz combo program, Hot Minute plays a variety of styles from funk to traditional jazz and everything in between. The quintet formed two years ago, playing at Central’s quarterly Combo Night, and have since played at Boxleys jazz club in North Bend, the Cantando Band Festival in Whistler, as well as other venues in the greater Seattle area.

To catch the attention of their listeners, Hot Minute pushes the limit of each other’s musical abilities to produce a unique sound.

or the first time Jazz in the Valley will feature a duo of very accomplished pianists.

Danny Kolke, who grew up in a musical family, started performing at a young age. In 2009, Danny and his wife, Robyn, set up a live music venue that has been rated as one of the top jazz clubs in the world by DownBeat Magazine.

Boxleys, in downtown North Bend, features mostly local and regional talent. Danny is known in the Northwest for his aggressive technique and passionate voicings.

He’s often found swinging on the piano, bussing tables at Boxleys or teaching piano lessons.

Clem Ehoff is an East Coast man who now calls the great Northwest his home. He played with the Clem Ehoff Trio and is a renowned composer and pianist, taking joy in spicing up standard tunes with jazz and Latin idioms. His music has been described as “jazz driven by a pulsating Latin groove and a veritable paella of sound

and rhythm.”

Sophisticated Swing

F

or almost 70 years, Sophisticated Swing has been a cutting-edge dance band in Central Washington. The band is now in its fourth generation of young professional musicians, always performing a library of customwritten dance arrangements heard nowhere else. Once in the ’70s and again in the ’80s, they backed Bob Hope, among other entertainers.

ark Riley is not only great at playing the guitar, he’s also skilled at making them. With numerous music industry awards under his belt, Mark has been successful with groups such as The Mark Riley Trio, Snake Oil, Little Bill and the Blue Notes, The Mark Whitman Band, and several others.

Mark is a master craftsman with his own line of boutique custom guitars. The acclaimed Louisiana Blues Great Sonny Landreth owns, and loves, Mark’s signature guitars.

ith the title “Gentleman of Jazz,” drummer Mel Brown is back at Jazz in the Valley by popular demand. With a career spanning over 40 years, Mel has become an Oregon icon in jazz. He was recognized for his contributions to Oregon’s cultural life with the Governor’s Arts Award in 2002.

Starting in the seventh grade, Brown would practice for 19 hours a day, six days a week in a quest to be a great drummer. His professional career kicked off with a gig with Earl Grant. He later went on to be a staff drummer for the Motown Music Corporation.

He’s recorded and toured with groups like The Temptations, The Supremes, and Smokey Robinson.

He spent 10 years working with Diana Ross, Suzanne Somers, Connie Francis, Pat Boone and others.

Saul Cline and the Cascadian All-Stars

D

ebuting at Jazz in the Valley, the Cascadian All-Stars were put together by clarinetist and saxophonist Saul Cline to play his favorite music with his favorite musicians.

Throughout the Northwest, Cline has performed early jazz and swing music and has been fortunate enough to perform with many nationally known artists. His most rewarding musical experiences, however, come from his associations with the Seattlearea musicians.

Californian Casey MacGill, with his classic Hollywood character both in appearance and style, plays boogiewoogie, swing and stride piano. He also blows a lyrical cornet, and his most unique instrumental voice is a six-string tenor ukulele.

Starting with a guitar in high school, Neil Andersson joined a famous Northwest rock group in 1964 and is now a member of the Northwest Music Hall of Fame.

Ranger and the Re-Arrangers

W

ith their version of gypsy jazz, Ranger and the ReArrangers have fun evoking the spirit of a Parisian cafe and the raucous energy of a campsite full of Gypsies. With a repertoire including swing standards, traditional Gypsy melodies, and the music of Django Reinhardt, World Rhythm says, “At the heart of their sound is Ranger’s sweet violin playing, his sense of melody and daring improvisations.”

Combining the talent of Ranger Sciacca (violinist), Jeffrey Moose (percussionist), Ranger’s father Michael Sciacca (rhythm guitarist), and Darin Locke (guitarist and bassist), Ranger and the Re-Arrangers have won several awards and accolades.

In 2007 and 2009, the band was a finalist for the Independent Music Award. They took home the award for the Global Rhythm Magazine Song Contest for Gypsy Moon in April 2007.

rville Johnson and Grant Dermody play a unique style of blues. Johnson was born and raised in the Southern Illinois heartland. In St. Louis, he was exposed to and participated in a variety of blues, bluegrass and American roots music.

He can sing the blues, pick the guitar and dobro and just about anything with strings on it.

Johnson will write you a song, tell you a story and then teach you how to do it, too. He is a hard musician to categorize since he can do it all.

He’s a singer, player, songwriter, the top dobro player on the West Coast and has become a vital figure on the Northwest music scene in the 30 years he has lived here.

Dermody is a harmonica player, singer, songwriter and teacher from Seattle. He is a highly versatile musician and a lifelong student of the harmonica and acoustic blues.

Beyond the blues, Dermody is passionate about old-time music.

Sidewalk Stompers Sidewalk Stompers is a traditional jazz band based in Pasco but utilizes musicians from Seattle and Portland. This small New Orleans style acoustics street band usually performs without piano or drums.

The band plays early style jazz tunes such as those of Louis Armstrong, King Oliver and jelly Roll Morton Era. For the past 18 years the Sidewalk Stompers have entertained Jazz fans at this incredible Jazz in the Valley festival in Ellensburg. The Sidewalk Stompers’ music represents the roots of all of the other jazz heard a this festival and as such they are the reference baseline.

The Washington Blue Society awarded Jones “Female Vocalist of the Year” in 2010 and 2014, and her band received “Best New Blues Band” in 2009.

eattle-based saxophonist, composer and educator Steve Treseler draws from the traditions of classic jazz, impressionism, minimalism, alternative rock and avant-garde. His latest recording, Center Song, was named one of the Best Albums of 2014 by DownBeat Magazine and features renowned trumpeter Ingrid Jensen. Jon Garelick called the album “a diverse group of beautifully crafted ensemble pieces” in his four-star review.

Steve’s original music has been featured nationally on NPR and Jazz after Hours and he has shared the stage with jazz greats Kenny Wheeler, Bill Frisell, Dave Douglas, Bob Brookmeyer, and Mike Stern among others.

Steve picked up the clarinet for the school band when he was 10, growing up in Edmonds. In middle school, he started playing the tenor saxophone and when high school rolled around, he got serious about jazz. He immersed himself in the classic recordings of Lester Young, Clifford Brown, John

ospel music on Sundays is a tradition at Jazz in the Valley and will be kept alive by The Anointed Brothers. Pastor Nataniel Greene Sr. of the Greater Revival Church of God in Seattle asked a few talented male singers to start a gospel group in 1997.

That group is now known as The Anointed Brothers.

Members include Clifford Dumas (vocals/ guitar), Larry Looney (bass guitar), Rev Linton Weems Sr. (vocals/keyboard), Stanley Friendship (drums) and Jeremiah Beckwith Jr. and Willie McClarron Jr. with vocals.

For guitarist Charlie Morgan, who graduated Ellensburg High School in 1964, it’ll be a homecoming of sorts. ind Power, directed by Norm Wallen, is a 15-piece dance band with four saxophones, six brass, a rhythm section and features two vocalists, Aryn Chatterton and Billy Buhl.

All the Wind Power musicisans have college degrees in music with astonishing resumes of high-profile performances industry-wide. Many are music teachers, leading their students through example. Wind Power performs musical arrangements custom-written for the band.

You’ll hear this music nowhere else.
